Teacher of the year Francis Howell North High School Teacher named the 2019 Missouri Teacher of the Year

By Brett Auten Shelly Parks’ pathway to a life dedicated to education was built by someone close to her.

Parks is a Troy native and her mother, Sandy Turpin, recently retired after teaching for 40 years at Troy Middle School.

“She was very inspiring,” Parks said. “And in a small town like Troy, a teacher cannot only have a major influence but she was also something of a small town celebrity.”

Parks has been making celebratory headlines herself recently when the Francis Howell North High School English teacher was named the 2019 Missouri Teacher of the Year by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. She becomes the 50th Missouri Teacher of the Year since the program’s inception, and the second to come from the Francis Howell School District.

Parks is a graduate of Harding University in Arkansas. While there, it was a trip to Romania that drove home the idea that she wanted to dedicate her life to educating others.

“It sealed the deal,” she said.

After graduation, Parks spent a semester at Elsberry High School before being hired

by Howell North in 2002. Parks teaches Advanced Placement (AP) Foundations, sophomore English and senior AP English.

“I was very surprised,” Parks said about receiving the Teacher of the Year honor. “In no way do I consider myself the best teacher in the state of Missouri at all. If anything, it means that I am doing some good things in the classroom but I am surrounded by colleagues who are all doing good things in the classroom.”

to a lack of new teachers coming down the pipeline, many might wonder if high schools are great places to be. Parks is eager to use her new platform to highlight the positive.

“I’m looking forward to being a spokesman and spreading the awesome things students and colleagues are doing on a day-to-day basis,” Parks said. “I’m not going to present it as all roses and sunshine. The reality is a lot of teachers have other jobs to help make ends meet. Within the past 10 years, there has been a 23-percent decline in people going into teaching and there is a lot of turnarounds every year. We have to figure that out and part of it is sharing the joyous parts of our career.”

Howell North Principal Dr. Nathan Hostetler said that Parks holds herself to the highest standards and lives by the motto, “If it isn’t good enough for my own kids, it isn’t good enough for my students.”

“And that applies to what she does in the classroom, what she expects her students to produce, and how she treats every student who walks through her door,” Hostetler said.

“She means the world to her students because they know they mean the world to her, and that helps set the tone for high expectations and compassion for the entire faculty.”

In addition to her work in the classroom, Parks has received numerous professional recognitions, attended and led multiple professional development sessions and is engaged in many aspects of the Francis Howell community. In 2007, she became a National Board Certified Teacher (a voluntary, advanced teaching credential that goes beyond state licensure that certifies teachers who successfully complete its rigorous certification process) and was re-certified in 2016. The St. Charles County Highway Department closed Woodstream Drive between Weatherton Place and Attleboro Court beginning Sept. 17, to allow for removal and replacement of a box culvert. The closure area is located approximately 0.2 miles north of North St. Peters Parkway (outer road of Route 364).

Traffic is required to use a detour route around the closure for approximately 1.5 months while the new box culvert is constructed.

The project is expected to be fully completed by Oct. 31. Local traffic can access Woodstream Drive on either side of the closure location, but no through traffic will be permitted. The Highway Department will place changeable message boards notifying motorists of the closure, necessary detours, and any closure or opening date changes.

This road project is part of a continuing effort by St. Charles County Government to improve the county’s road system for the safety of the traveling public. On National Night Out, fighting crime is as simple as turning on your porch light and stepping outside to spend the evening with your neighbors. The St. Peters Police Department encourages residents to plan a neighborhood BBQ or block party as a way to make a stand against crime in our community on National Night Out, which takes place from 4 - 8 p.m. Oct. 2.

Plan your party ahead of time and invite the police department to meet with kids and hand out stickers, coloring books and other fun items. Scruff McGruff the Crime Dog will also make a few special appearances at neighborhood parties.

Nearly $70,000 in college scholarships awarded The Cuivre River Electric Community Trust Board is funding a record amount of college scholarships in 2018. This year, 70 students from the cooperative’s four-county service area are receiving scholarships totaling $69,750.

This is the largest amount of scholarship money awarded in a single year through the Operation Round Up program. More than 140 applications were submitted. Last year, $52,500 in scholarships was awarded to 70 students.

The Trust Board has awarded 2,165 scholarships totaling $1.1 million since 1997, its founding year. The scholarships have been used for undergraduate students attending accredited universities or technical schools and students seeking to continue their education.

Applicants are also asked to provide an official transcript and two let¬ters of recommendation, write a narrative to highlight their academic achievements and state their career goals and demonstrate a financial need. The scholarship may also be used for adult continuing education courses in their career fields.

Scholarships are awarded each June. The next application deadline is April 24, 2019.

Scholarship funds are donated by Cuivre River Electric members who participate in Operation Round Up by rounding up their electric bill payments each month to the next highest dollar. The funds, administered by a seven-member volunteer Cuivre River Electric Community Trust Board, are avail¬able to help individuals, families and orga¬nizations.

Wentzville Girl Scout pirouettes her way through earning the Girl Scout Gold Award Hannah Saunders, a junior at Holt High School in Wentzville, recently earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.

By earning the award, Saunders exemplifies a leader who has transformed an idea for change into an actionable plan with a measurable and sustainable impact. Saunders was recognized with other Gold Award Girl Scouts during a ceremony at Lindenwood University in St. Charles this summer.

For some, Prince Ivan’s journey through the magical forest and his battle against a formidable magician is just a century-old ballet. But for Saunders, “The Firebird” is an opportunity to teach students about the strength of nonverbal communication. Conveying a message through a body movement or gesture is a powerful tool and to do so effectively can mean success in a vast number of daily interactions with friends, family, teachers and community members.

To earn her Gold Award, Saunders wrote, illustrated and published five different books inspired by classical ballets. After publishing, Saunders visited 10 schools in the Wentzville area, presented her stories to students and initiated discussions about nonverbal communication. Saunders covered the cost of printing the 30 books by organizing and hosting several dance workshops for her fellow Girl Scouts. During these workshops, she taught the young women dance moves from “The Nutcracker.”

“I partly wrote these books to help people understand what ballets are trying to express,” Saunders said. “I also wanted to teach students that there is more to communication than just talking.”

After going to the schools, she gave several copies of her books to the school librarians, ensuring her passion for dance and nonverbal communication will be explored by future generations of students.

Wentzville event diverts more than 24,000 pounds of e-waste

More than 24,000 pounds (or 12.25 tons) of e-waste was diverted from the landfill last month. This is thanks to the more than 850 participants who dropped off electronics at Wentzville’s second Electronics Recycling Event. This event also included secure document shredding, to prevent identity theft and ensure personal and confidential information was disposed of properly. Approximately 15,000 pounds (or 7.5 tons) of shredded materials were processed on-site during the event.

Patient attendees waited in line to drive-thru and drop off their items. Electronic waste items collected primarily included computer-related equipment, such as monitors, printers and laptops. This successful event was coordinated by the city of Wentzville with help from Midwest Recycling Center and Shred-it.

“We are glad we can provide an opportunity to help the community dispose of electronic waste properly. We want to extend a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who participated and to our rock-star volunteers,” said Wentzville Mayor Nick Guccione.

All in all, during 2018, the city of Wentzville has helped to divert more than 50,000 pounds (or 25 tons) of e-waste from the landfill. In January of 2018, the city hosted its first electronics recycling event in which 31,000 pounds (or 15.5 tons) of e-waste was collected.

It was 3 a.m. and my heart was racing for no apparent reason. I tried to go back to sleep but kept thinking about a random task I had been meaning to do for several months. Finally, I got out of bed and picked up a book to read. I needed something – anything – to stop the whirling in my brain.

So what does one do when anxiety attacks?

What does one do when the sleepless nights become chronic and rob the afflicted of peace? How should one respond when restless nights turn into bleary-eyed days? When fretful thoughts cloud and emotions jumble? When the heart becomes overwhelmed with its racing?

Begin at the beginning What is the root cause of your anxiety? Some of us have good reasons to be anxious. Maybe we have a sick child or parent. The endless stream of doctor’s visits is a source of pain as we consider a future we are not prepared to face. Or maybe it is something more basic. The project at work is running behind schedule and we are under pressure to prove we can get the work done. Our new boss has changed the procedures and there is talk that reorganization may be in order.

Sometimes we have to come to terms with the real pressures in our lives and decide how best to respond. Take time to ponder the source of your worry. Write it down, if it helps. Facing the hairy beast acknowledges it exists.

Know when to ask for help Friends are an invaluable source of healing.

Good friends help carry the buckets of water we are not strong enough to bear. The problem is many of us think we are indomitable. Worse, our

culture feeds this self-sufficient narrative by encouraging us to work harder and smarter, and if you can’t keep up, there’s a pill for that. We sometimes forget we are only human beings – not heroes – and we need other people. Sometimes a simple cup of coffee with a neighbor is more healing than a bottle of Xanax. Share your story and listen in return. That said, acknowledge when anxiety has spiraled out of control and reach out to a professional. Sometimes we get so tangled up that we need an expert to unravel us.

Make time to rest The most reasonable solution is often the simplest solution. And no, rest is not binge-watching your favorite television show. Sometimes we need time to process our predicament and that requires calm and quiet. I do this by standing in my front yard and watching the sky. When I consider the clouds, the stars and the continual beauty in motion to which I can never improve upon, I stand in awe. Sometimes only then can I rest in knowing that there is something larger than myself at work and know that I am not responsible for solving every problem. MDC hosts Discover Nature Schools Nature Unhooked teacher training workshops in St. Charles The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites teachers to attend an upcoming Discover Nature Schools teacher workshop for “Nature Unhooked,” the brand-new instructional unit for grades 6-8. These workshops provide free training for teachers interested in using “Nature Unhooked” to connect authentic learning experiences and aquatic education in their Missouri classroom, home-school class or youth group.

The upcoming workshops will take place at the MDC St. Louis Regional Office, 2360 Hwy D in St. Charles from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the following dates: • Oct. 5 (register by Oct. 3) • Oct. 6 (register by Oct. 4) “The Discover Nature Schools program is an excellent way to get students of all ages outside and to provide a place-based, experiential approach to student learning while focusing on Missouri plants, animals and natural systems,” said MDC Conservation Education Consultant Kim Cole.

These hands-on workshops will prepare educators to teach Nature Unhooked, the new aquatic unit from the Discover Nature Schools program.

“Nature Unhooked,” which is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and Missouri Learning Expectations for sixth through eighth grade science, focuses on the properties of water, the water cycle and biodiversity in relation to aquatic ecosystems in Missouri. “Nature Un-

hooked” also includes a Project Based Learning component to encourage student-centered and collaborative investigations. Teacher’s guides and classroom sets of student guides and science notebooks are provided for free, and eligible schools can receive non-competitive grants for field experiences and equipment that support the curriculum units.

Three Wentzville teachers named Missouri Physical Education Teachers of the Year Three Wentzville School District physical education teachers have earned the title of 2018 Missouri Physical Education Teacher of the Year, at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. Sally Schulte from Heritage Primary has been named the Missouri Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year, Marc Tiernan from Wentzville Middle School has been named the Missouri Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year, and Melanie Zerr from Timberland High School has been named the Missouri High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year; all by the Missouri Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MOAHPERD).

“It is unprecedented to have all three grade-level recipients from the same school district,” said Executive Director of MOAHPERD Dr. Thomas Loughrey. “It is also an indication of the quality seen in the teachers of the Wentzville School District.”

Schulte has worked for the WSD since 2010 and currently serves as the lead PE teacher for the district.

“Sally is an advocate for physical and health education in our district, and she works hard to ensure that all teachers have what they need (resources, access to professional learning, etc.) to do the very best they can for their students,” said WSD Director of Teaching and Learning Dr. Keri Skeeters.

was honored by MOAHPERD last year with the Young Professional Award for demonstrating outstanding potential for scholarship, teaching and professional leadership.

“Marc had a vision to repurpose a storage room into a space where students could create fitness goals for themselves and track their work toward these goals. Students now think of this as a lifetime activity and not merely another class that they have to take,” said Wentzville Middle School Principal Dr. Kelly Mantz. “He takes the responsibility of his job seriously and is constantly finding ways to improve himself, our students, his colleagues and his teaching methods.”

Zerr, who qualified this year to compete in the World Horseshoe Championship, has worked for the WSD since 2005.

“Melanie goes above and beyond to create a classroom environment that promotes valuing physical activity and a healthy lifestyle,” said Timberland PE teacher and co-worker Ami Schulte. “She is an outstanding example of how teach-

ers should strive to be in the classroom and represent our profession.”

Schulte, Tiernan and Zerr will receive their awards at the MOAHPERD state convention at the Lodge of Four Seasons on Nov. 10. They are all now eligible for the Central District Teacher of the Year award in their respective categories, which covers nine states: Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado. Central District winners are eligible for the national PE Teacher of the Year award through Shape America.

“We are extremely proud to have three state-level recipients of this distinguished honor,” said WSD Superintendent Dr. Curtis Cain. “This is a reflection of the professionalism and caliber of our educators, as well as the esteem with which they are regarded across the state.

We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Schulte, Mr. Tiernan and Mrs. Zerr as part of our team as they are all leaders in their field and tremendous resources for our students.”

St. Charles County Manufacturing Day takes place on Oct. 2 Manufacturing Day is a program of the National Association of Manufacturers and was started in 2012. Last year, 595,341 people participated in Manufacturing Day nationwide, including 267,607 students. A survey of those students showed that the program has a powerful impact.

Nearly 90 percent of the students who attended an event said they became more aware of manufacturing jobs in their communities. In addition, 84 percent of students who participated in Manufacturing Day were more convinced that manufacturing provides interesting, rewarding careers. The payoff is that 64 percent of these students said they were more motivated to pursue a manufacturing career and 71 percent said they would share their experience with others.

“Businesses across Missouri tell us that workforce is a major issue and that it’s increasingly difficult to find the employees they need for the jobs they have. This problem is especially pronounced in manufacturing, where outdated stereotypes about factory work help to drive people away from today’s good paying, high-tech production jobs,” said Daniel P. Mehan, Missouri Chamber president and CEO. “We are proud to help promote Manufacturing Day in Missouri because we know it makes a real difference. I encourage Missourians to attend the events in their communities and help celebrate the importance of manufacturing in our economy.”

Sept. 29-30: Boone Heritage Days

Celebrate a Missouri tradition at Boone Heritage Days from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on Sept. 29, and from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. on Sept. 30, at The Historic Daniel Boone Home near Defiance. Citizens from across the state are invited to enjoy free frontier festivities, demonstrations and live shooting matches during this two-day event that pays tribute to Daniel Boone, one of the first American heroes and a great explorer and hunter of his time. Guests will be entertained throughout the day by The Trappers of Starved Rock, an educational antique firearms club and popular living history organization. The group will demonstrate “front loading” techniques and sharp shooting skills as they participate in live black-powder contests. Guests also can visit with living history interpreters in the village’s gunsmith cabin, learn wood working at the carpenter’s shop, or barter and trade with the general store owner.

Additionally, demonstrators will be on hand to teach the traditional way of brain tanning deer hides. During the event, paid tours will be available of the historic Daniel Boone Home

Operation Food Search, a nonprofit hunger relief organization, will host its 25th annual golf tournament presented

by Ascension Health with registration beginning at 11 a.m. and a shotgun start at noon. The tournament will be held at WingHaven Country Club, St. Louis’ only Nicklaus-designed course, located at 7777 Winghaven Blvd. in O’Fallon. At Broemmelsiek Park, through Nov. 4, groups of 20 can reserve a tractor-pulled hay wagon for a 45-minute ride through prairies and tree-lined fields in the park. There is a new Frontier League Champion As most of you know the River City Rascals, your professional baseball team out of O’Fallon, dropped a tough series against the Joliet Slammers in the playoffs recently after leading the best-of-five series two games to one.

The Slammers opponent for the championship would be the Washington Wild Things, as both teams had the best record in the Frontier League at 54-42.

The Slammers opened the 2018 campaign with five straight losses but won the most important last game in the championship to crown them the winner of the series. Joliet had won only one other championship that was in 2011.

UMSL men‘s soccer pick up second straight victory This past Friday the University of Missouri-St. Louis traveled to Liberty, Missouri to take on the William Jewell club in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).

There was only one goal scored in the contest that went the UMSL way making the ride home a little bit more enjoyable.

Junior Magnus Anderson notched his second straight game-winner to help the Tritons soccer team to a 1-0 win against the Cardinals. Anderson one-timed it from inside the box into the far deep pocket of the goal off a free kick with 88:01 on the clock with junior Zach Druhe getting the assist. It was Anderson’s team-leading third goal of the year.

This was there first road game of the season after opening the season with five home games.

At this point in the young season the men’s team have won and lost three games and are 2-1 in the GLVC. Other mentions include Senior Oscar Gordillo with four shots with two on target. Junior Nedin Kudic made four saves, playing all 90 minutes in goal and recorded his second shutout in three starts. *Good start

Cougars sweep all their games on the field this week The St. Charles Community College (SCC) men and women soccer teams had a great week.

The Lady Cougars went 2-0 on the week with a win over Parkland College by a final of 4-1 and a win over State Fair CC, 3-2 in overtime.

The men’s team went 2-0 on the week with a win against Southwest Illinois CC in overtime, 4-3 and a win against State Fair CC by a final of 4-1.

After speaking with men’s coach BJ Lancaster he stated, “This was an extremely important week for us. We needed two wins and we got them. I am proud of my guys for sticking together and getting the job done.”

Social media part of the plots of “Searching,” “A Simple Favor”

Last week, I wrote a column about “You’ve Got Mail,” a romantic comedy where the romance really took place via messages on America Online. Social media has grown by leaps and bounds since that movie debuted in 1998 thanks to companies such as Facebook and Twitter.

These websites are a double-edged sword; however, allowing people to express their opinions, get into online arguments and sometimes lose their careers over what they posted.

Social media also became an integral part of some recent movies as well. Look, for instance, at “Searching,” an intriguing new drama from director Aneesh Chaganty. John Cho plays David Kim, a widowed father desperately trying to find his missing daughter, Margot (Michelle La). With the help of social media sites, the film follows Mr. Kim as he backtracks through her emails, videos and other online postings for clues.

Avoiding traditional camera shots, director Chaganty shows his characters on smartphones, computer monitors and video screens. John Cho does an excellent job conveying David Kim’s anguish on these devices as he searches for Margot. Imitating real life, Chaganty also adds running commentary from people on social media who wonder if he killed his own child. He’s being convicted in the court of public opinion without any evidence.

“A Simple Favor” also deals with missing persons and social media, but with an ironic tone.

Cleaver and Carol Brady look like negligent parents. Stephanie is an overachieving mother who volunteers for every bake sale and charity drive.

She also has her own vlog (video blog) where she records helpful tips for other mothers.

Stephanie’s life changes when she meets Emily Nelson (Blake Lively), a public relations director with a son of her own. The two moms becoming drinking buddies and friends, and Stephanie sometimes picks up Emily’s son after school. One day, however, her glamorous friend disappears without a trace and she gets worried and frantic.

Stephanie’s grief and fear also bring her closer to Sean (Henry Golding), Emily’s husband.

Directed by Paul Feig, key portions of “A Simple Favor” are told through Stephanie’s ambitious vlog. Normally devoted to baking ideas and homemaking tips, the video blog becomes a place where viewers learn more about Emily’s disappearance. Stephanie doesn’t hide her grief or frustration about her missing friend, and her viewership grows as the days go on. This supermom’s social status increases dramatically thanks to her posts.

“Searching” and “A Simple Favor” make excellent use of social media to tell their respective stories. Yet, the technology does not overwhelm the plot. The Stephanie Smothers character uses microfiche copies of newspaper articles to find clues to Emily’s whereabouts. In the hands of these directors, social media is an effective moviemaking tool.

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work.

Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

hristmas came early this September aboard a flight across country.

How could getting on a jet for a five-hour flight crammed like a pickle in a jar and usually seated next to a stranger with an acute case of tuberculosis who prefers to sneeze in my breathing space rather than a tissue, be like Christmas you ask?

Excellent, extra-lengthy question. Let me explain…

Recently, we were among the first passengers to board on our trip. Our seats were located in the back of the airplane. And by back I mean so far back we could touch the door to the bathroom, which is something you NEVER want to do unless you have a bottle of Purell handy. But unfortunately it was confiscated by TSA because, I guess, Purell bombs are a thing now.

My husband got the aisle seat so he could have the luxury of stretching out one of his legs only to have it later flattened multiple times by the snack cart and tripped over by people heading to the bathroom.

We waited as the plane filled. The window seat next to me had not yet been taken. A fleeting thought passed by; “Maybe no one would sit there.” “Shush,” I told myself. “You’ll jinx it. Now someone with nasal drip and a smelly llama service animal will end up sitting next to you.”

But soon, the doors were locked and it became obvious, I would get extra space and not even have to pay for it. Jingle bells began to play in my mind.

Sky-high surprise

Sweet spaciousness.

It was like an additional room added onto the house. I could bring in a loveseat and a few accent chairs, maybe squeeze in a bookcase; at the very least lift up the arm rest and roll into the fetal position for

a little catnap.

And that’s just what I attempted to do.

Did I mention we were in the back of the plane within earshot of the toilet flushers? Such a pleasant noise. I finally managed to fall into a fidgety slumber when it discharged. I was jolted awake in a panic by the vibrations of a supersonic turbo-flush. It sounded like one of the engines had been ripped off and blew up inside my eardrum.

It appeared that the Grinch had stolen my early Christmas. But not so! Just when all seem lost, I found an extra peanut wedged in between my seat cushion. Jingle bells!

Archeological Humorist: someone who unearths absurdity and hilarity in strange and unusual places including public restrooms, the lint filter, and church meetings.
