Entrepreneurship Week, hosted by the John W. Hammond Institute for Free Enterprise at Lindenwood University, celebrates creativity and enterprise in St. Charles County

Now more than ever is an appropriate time for the first-ever Entrepreneurship Week, hosted by the John W. Hammond Institute for Free Enterprise at Lindenwood University.

Renowned Pulitzer Prize-nominated author, entrepreneur and international lecturer, Clifton L. Taulbert, will headline Entrepreneurship Week 2018 and is featured throughout multiple sessions, all open to the public, on Oct. 17 and Oct. 18.

The events are sponsored by the Duree Center for Entrepreneurship with financial support from: St. Charles County Economic Development Center, the Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce, and STL CAPS – St. Louis Centers for Advanced Professional Studies. The mission of the Duree Center for Entrepreneurship is to create and find experiential, entrepreneurial learning opportunities for students and external audiences. The Duree Center creates

both academic and external partnerships to make these opportunities possible. Many entrepreneurs in St. Charles County and the surrounding region are familiar with The Ice House Entrepreneurship Program, which has been offered through Lindenwood University for the past several years.

“There is an entrepreneurial spirit I see and feel in St. Charles County,” Craig Felzien, Director of the Duree Center, said. “Curiosity is the hallmark of the entrepreneurial mind and doing things in a new and unique way.”

Taulbert’s literary work led him on a journey throughout the world. Raised in the Mississippi Delta during the era of legal segregation and though opportunities were few and the barriers plentiful, he focused on being successful, though not knowing what shape that success would take. Following high school graduation and a short banking career in St. Louis, Taulbert enlisted in the United States Air force. After serving in the 89th Presidential Wing of the United States Air Force in the late 1960s, he was honorably discharged and continued his college education, graduating from Oral Roberts University and See ’ENTREPRENEURSHIP’ page 2

After more than five years of visits to other facilities, planning, designing and constructing, the new St. Charles County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is move-in ready. The center, located at 1400 T.R. Hughes Boulevard in O’Fallon, is home to the county’s emergency functions that previously were in different areas of the county. It is expected to be fully occupied by the end of the year.

“We will begin moving equipment and staff in soon,” says County Executive Steve Ehlmann. “More than 40 employees will operate out of this facility daily, with the capacity to hold many more in the event of an emergency or disaster. This is a much-needed facility that will bring all of the county’s emergency services together for a more coordinated and efficient response.”

The new, 30,000-square-foot facility will house the day-to-day operations of the Department of Emergency Communications. This department maintains and supports the county’s Next Generation 911 phone system and the digital P25 radio system. Emergency Communications provides dispatching services for 12 fire and EMS agencies in the county, as well as the county police, sheriff, corrections and park rangers. This function has been housed in Wentzville.

Also moving to the new EOC is the St. Charles County Police Department’s Division of Emergency Management, currently located in a cramped space in the basement of the St. Charles County Jail in St. Charles. Emergency Management staff are tasked with the unified planning and coordination of disaster preparedness, response and recovery. The space will accommodate 17 emergency task

groups from municipalities, neighboring jurisdictions and state and federal agencies for major activations. The building is designed to withstand an EF-4 tornado, which is important to ensuring that the facility continues to be operational during severe weather. During emergencies and disasters, staff will be able to monitor live events and data in real time through a variety of systems, enabling a faster response.

Also in the new EOC is the county’s Information Systems Data Center, the “nerve center” for all PCs, telephones, security and video in the building. Dual power, dual UPS, dual generators and dual network links to the entire St. Charles County IT network ensure security and resiliency. In the future, the EOC Data Center will support the County’s overall technology infrastructure needs. Currently, the County’s data center is in the County’s Administration building in St. Charles.

The EOC is strategically located adjacent to the St. Charles County Police Department, located at 101 Sheriff Dierker Court in O’Fallon. Landmark Contract Management was hired as the owner’s representative for the County; Brinkmann Constructors, in partnership with Architects Design Group, was the design-builder.

• County Emergency Management has an average of 21 yearly activations, 18 yearly Mobile Command Post deployments and had 14 disasters and emergencies from 2000-2016.

• Emergency Communications answers 150+ 911 calls per day and supports 190+ police-related incidents and 140+ fire/EMS-related incidents per day.

• The county-wide emergency radio communication system handles 10,000 radio transmissions per day.

Nahm Road closed between Routes T and 94 for bridge replacement The St. Charles County Highway Department closed Nahm Road between Route T and Route 94 to allow for removal and replacement of a deteriorated bridge over a tributary of Sehrt Creek. The closure area is located approximately 0.1 miles east of Highway T. Traffic will be required to use a detour route around the closure for approximately two months while the new bridge is constructed.

Local traffic can access Nahm Road on either side of the closure location, but no through traffic will be permitted. The Highway Department will place changeable message boards notifying

motorists of the closure, necessary detours, and any closure or opening date changes.

The project is expected to be fully completed

by Dec. 17.

This road project is part of a continuing effort

Fort Zumwalt Park temporarily closed to traffic and disc golf for Celebration of Lights setup

To prepare for the city of O’Fallon’s annual Celebration of Lights display, Fort Zumwalt Park will be closed to vehicles through mid-January, 2019, so that crews can safely install holiday lights and scenes throughout the park. The park’s disc golf course, “The Fort,” also will be closed during this period.

Walkers and joggers are welcome to enjoy the park during daylight hours, but for safety’s sake are required to stay on the paved drive through the park. Everyone is invited to see the Celebration of Lights, which will open the day after Thanksgiving at 6 p.m. on Nov. 23, and continue nightly through Dec. 30, closing only for Christmas, Dec. 25.

I recently saw a post on social media from a friend who related her experience in the grocery store. As she approached the check-out line with a handful of items, a man with a full cart raced to cut her off. Her day had not been great up to that point and so his behavior really set her on edge; as in the edge of smacking him upside the head. Rather than turn to physical violence she expressed her frustration online. Her post elicited sympathy from friends and a host of suggestions for non-violent ways to exact revenge. Even though she didn’t immediately respond in anger, this man’s behavior caused a very bad mood to erupt. I’m certain we can all relate.

Bad moods are nasty little critters that have more power than we frequently give them credit for. Like a squirrel gone wild, they scurry up our spine and latch onto the back of our neck. This causes our neck muscles to tighten, our shoulders to hunch forward, and – if we are so genetically inclined – a wrinkle to vividly erupt in the middle of our eyebrows. While under the thrall of this decidedly dreadful vermin, we are prone to fallacious fantasies and stupendous self-pity. Worse, we can spend our mood on other unsuspecting souls. But if we have the courage to grab that ruthless parasite by the neck and fling him away, we can use our bad mood for good.

Now you might be asking how this is possible.

I would propose we can do something more con-

structive; specifically, move forward with kindness.

Now maybe you are thinking I’ve gotten into the cookies again and my brain is sugar-soaked and curdling. I won’t confirm or deny this is the case but I do know that extending mercy to those who have offended us deeply is a mechanism for peace.

I would also like to propose that while we may not always bounce back fast enough to be kind to the person who has cut us down, we can extend kindness to someone else. For example, we can allow someone to merge in front of us on the highway.

We can say “God bless you” to the neighbor whose dog repeatedly uses our front yard for a toilet.

These acts of mercy do have a personal cost, but if we are willing to pay it, we can spread peace like a warm blanket over cold souls. Even if they don’t appreciate our selfless behavior, we have joy in knowing we made the world a happier place.

Nine Fort Zumwalt students named National Merit Semifinalists These 2018 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are among the top scorers on a test taken by more than 1 million high school juniors at more than 22,000 high schools across the nation. The semifinalists represent less than one percent of high school students who qualify to continue in the competition. Next spring, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will award about $35 million to roughly 8,000 graduating high school seniors.

Timberland students draw attention to International Day of Peace with pinwheels Members of the Timberland High School Art Club planted over 1,000 pinwheels around the exterior of their school in recognition of International Day of Peace. The pinwheels were created by Timberland students, staff and families in conjunction with “Pinwheels for Peace,” a project that was initiated in 2005 by two art teachers in Florida as a way for students to express how they felt about what was going on in the world around them.

Timberland art students have participated in the project for the past eleven years. Timberland Art Club students work under the instruction of Fine Arts Department Chair Crystal Wing.

“Pinwheels instantly make me smile and take me back to childhood, running around and making them spin as fast as possible,” shared Wing. “The idea that we can spread ‘whirled’ peace with the fun toys of our childhood, reinvented with messages of peace in our lives and community, makes the work worthwhile.”

The Wentzville Walmart donated the supplies for this project.

Last year, Pinwheels for Peace organizers estimate over 4.5 million pinwheels were displayed world-wide on the same day in multiple countries.

Home Builders Association donates more than $13,000 to Emmaus Homes On behalf of the Home Builders Charitable Foundation (HBCF), 2018 HBA President Dale Black of CMS Homes (left) presented a $13,169 donation to Lisa Key, chief development officer for Emmaus Homes.

The donation will be used to replace flooring, window treatments, toilets and plumbing, remove wallpaper and create a fourth bedroom in a single-family home donated to and retained

by Emmaus Homes. Once the flooring is replaced and other repairs made, four women with developmental disabilities will move into the home.

Emmaus Homes is a faith based, nonprofit organization providing around the clock services to more than 300 adults with developmental disabilities in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Its mission is to help their clients live as independently as possible in the community of their choice. This year, the organization is celebrating their

The HBA is a local trade association of more than 600 member firms representing the residential construction industry.

The Home Builders Charitable Foundation, the HBA’s charitable arm, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing housing assistance to people or organizations with special shelter needs.

Veteran’s employment grant now available from the Missouri Job Center of St. Charles County Show-Me Heroes, a new workforce grant to help recently discharged service members, and their spouses, transition into civilian employment is now available from the Missouri Job Center of St. Charles County operated by the St. Charles County Department of Workforce & Business Development.

A $30,000 grant for wage reimbursements to participating employers through this program has been awarded to St. Charles County by the Missouri Division of Workforce Development.

Service members and their spouses from all branches of the military can participate, including National Guard and Reserves, if they have been honorably discharged in the last five years.

“The Show-Me Heroes employment grant allows us to reimburse up to 50 percent of a veteran’s wages for up to a maximum of 1,040 hours while they are being trained in a new job by a local employer. The same applies for the spouse of an eligible veteran,” says Scott J. Drachnik, Director of the St. Charles County Department of Workforce & Business Development. “Veterans return to civilian life with outstanding work ethic and transferable skills that employers are looking for in these days of full employment.

This limited grant opportunity makes it even more appealing for St. Charles County businesses to honor and hire veterans.”

Parks staff and vendors will be selling pumpkins, Bob’s Honey, vegetables from St. Charles Farmer’s Market, as well as a variety of historical toys and candy from the general store tent. And Noto Pizza will be on site selling their popular wood fired pizza. Scenic hayrides through the park will take place every 20 minutes and live folk music will be played throughout the day. Oct. 20: Hayride Hoedown

Hayride Hoedown takes place at Broemmelsiek Park near Defiance.

Oct. 20: Paper shredding event

For O’Fallon residents who have documents, records or papers that they would like to have destroyed, O’Fallon’s Environmental Services Department is hosting a free event to safely dispose of unwanted paperwork. The Shred Event is scheduled from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Environmental Services facility at 1550 Progress West Lane in O’Fallon. To participate, residents put the documents they want to destroy in cardboard bankers boxes, or cardboard boxes of a similar size, and drive up to the facility and drop them off. Please make sure the boxes are not too heavy to lift or filled to overflowing. Up to five banker-size boxes can be brought to the event, free. After the first five boxes, additional boxes can be dropped off for $5 each. Residents must bring photo identification showing O’Fallon residency and all trash customers must have their account in good standing in order to participate.

All of the material will be shredded including the boxes if they are not wanted back. The event is indoors, so it will be rain or shine. Please do not bring computer discs or hanging file rods. If you can tear it, then you can shred it with this complimentary service. It is okay for documents to have staples or paper clips. Lindenwood women hockey win first game The Lindenwood women’s hockey team picked up their first victory in just their third game this young season.

The squad defeated Union College on Friday night in Schenectady, New York with a decisive 4-1 notch in the win column.

The star of the game was Sierra Burt who led the way for the Lions as she posted two goals and one assist on the night.

Between the pipes, Jolene deBruyn made 21 saves while allowing just one goal as the Lions faced five power plays on the night.

The Lions jumped on the board first after Taylor Girard made a nice pass to Cierra Paisley who buried the puck in the back of the net just 2:26 into the game. After Union tied the game just a few minutes later, the Lions controlled the game for the most part after that and it paid off as Burt broke the tie with her first goal of the night at 11:42 of the first period.

Lillian Marchant added to the Lindenwood lead with a goal at the 12:46 mark of the second period. The Lions continued to handle the puck with care and deBruyn compiled 11 saves through the first two periods as the Lions faced four penalty kills through the first two frames.

Burt scored her second goal of the game in the third period to put the Lions up 4-1 with 7:04 to go in the game. Paisley registered her second point of the game as she had to lone assist. *The first win is always the sweetest one Indoor football to return to the Family Arena Quietly, football is returning and will be played in St. Charles County.

As a star defensive player with the Storm, Henry has been an absolute force in the indoor game.

In Dutch oven or large saucepan over medium heat, heat oil. Add onions, celery, jalapenos, garlic, cumin, oregano and pepper. Cook, stirring, 5-8 minutes, or until vegetables soften. Add tomato paste and cook 2 minutes.

Add tomatoes, pumpkin puree, chicken broth, black beans, chicken, chipotles and brown sugar.

Bring to boil. Reduce heat to low. Simmer, stirring occasionally, 1 hour, or until chili thickens. Add salt, to taste.

Garnish with green onions and serve with lime wedges.

Tip: Add preferred canned beans, such as white kidney beans, pinto or Romano beans, in place of or in addition to black beans.

It’s not too early to talk about holiday movies

I’ve seen memes online threatening boycotts (or worse) against retailers who put Christmas decorations on sale before Halloween. While I can understand the logic and frustration behind those sentiments, I always love to look ahead to see what movies will be coming to theaters for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

On Nov. 16, Newt Scamander and company return in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” the sequel to the 2016 adventure from “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling.

The core cast members are back but other casting choices raised some eyebrows. For instance, Johnny Depp, who played dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the first movie, reprises his role, but allegations of domestic abuse in real life have some fans up in arms.

A more recent “Fantastic Beasts” revelation involves actress Claudia Kim, who plays the role of Nagini. Those familiar with Rowling’s body of work know that Nagini is the name of Lord Voldemort’s snake that eats at least two characters in the novels. In this movie, Nagini is a human woman with a blood curse that will ultimately transform her into a snake forever.

Some fans already are questioning the casting of an Asian woman in such a subservient role.

Gone are those days for me. My reproductive apparatus has long ago dried up and turned to beef jerky. (Apologies to anyone who will never again be able to nibble on that tasty meat by-product without thinking of my lady parts.)

I’d been watching this cute mommy-to-be from afar during her baby bump’s nine-month expansion. So of course, after the delivery, I brought over dinner. And not just any tuna casserole from a box would do; I save that time-consuming specialty for my family on Christmas Day. No. Something even better – a gigantic Sam’s Club rotisserie chicken.

For those who sadly don’t know what I’m talking about, these things are the size of teenage turkeys – unnaturally huge. Now I’m not saying they’ve been pumped up with steroids, mainly because I don’t want my membership cancelled, so let’s just say they’ve been fed extremely well.

I’m convinced these hens were required to indulge in non-stop consumption of bacon cheesecake milkshakes, after which, they sat themselves on their overstuffed roosts all day watching “chick flicks” (See what I did there? Chicken… chick. No need for applause.) Continuing. This then allowed the feathery fowls to pile on layer upon layer of fat juicy thigh meat. While this regimen could very well be a rehash of my entire summer, it is in reality, the secret behind these plump delicacies.

Afterwards, they are skewered onto a spit and rotisserized for hours above flames until golden brown and succulent.

I presented this delicious delight to the new mom as I recalled those days long ago of morning sickness, back pain, urgent potty runs, waddle-walking, stretch marks, and the smells: oh, the horrendous smells. My nose passages were hypersensitive.

To this day I can’t use a certain bath soap without gag reflex because it brings back memories of taking early morning showers to ward off early morning nausea. And raw hamburger! Who even knew hamburger smelled?! But it did and it smelled raw, and cow-ish and bloody and bleh!

I reminded her that after the rigors she’d been through, she was allowed to tear into the chicken and leave behind only the mangled carcass.

(Which is a much better description of my reproductive apparatus.) You all can go back to eating your beef jerky. You’re welcome.
