By Brett Auten When it comes to bridging the past to the future, the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department is as good as it gets.

For a third year in a row, a volunteer at The Historic Daniel Boone Home in Defiance has received national recognition for breathing life into history.

Shirley Pecoraro, Certified Interpretive Guide at the Boone Home, recently received the National Association for Interpretation 2020 Outstanding Interpretive Volunteer Award, the highest honor in interpretation.

Pecoraro brings the legacy and era of the Boone family to life through her portrayal of Rebecca Boone, 18th century frontierswoman and wife of Daniel Boone.

“When it comes to Rebecca, there is very little written or known about her,” Pecoraro said. “She was married to Daniel for over 50 years, so I try to dovetail with what he had done and being a wife, mother and caregiver.

It’s a tremendous honor. It’s very meaningful and wonderful.”

Pecoraro’s eye to detail begins with the attire.

“There are vendors you can buy from,” she

said. “But the majority of mine come from researched patterns off museum collections and there are seamstresses who specialize in putting such costumes together.”

This prestigious award recognizes mastery of interpretive techniques, program development and dedication to interpretation. The award is open to a broad field of potential nominees like zoos, museums, aquariums and national parks. According to the association, which serves over 7,400 members in the United States and more than 31 nations, this See ‘PAST’ page 2

“It’s more than impressive,” Ryan Graham, Director of St. Charles County Parks, said.

“Her long-term commitment to living history, ability to portray multiple first-person characters at our historic site, and extensive knowledge and passion to teach interpretation have made a lasting impression on many visitors over the past 13 years.”

Since 2007, Pecoraro has been a dedicated volunteer, donating hundreds of hours to serving as an advocate for historical and cultural preservation at the popular site listed on the Register of Historic Places. She was presented with the 2016 Outstanding Volunteer Award by St. Charles County Parks in recognition of her dedication and years of volunteer service. Pecoraro, who has also been a St. Charles County Domestic Violence volunteer, believes wholeheartedly in the benefits of volunteering and the ripple-like affect it can have.

“It is important that people think about volunteering,” she said. “We you come to-

gether to help out and support a local organization or local government, it makes for a better life experience for all of us and it makes that resource stronger and more successful.”

Pecoraro is a lifetime member of The Association of Missouri Interpreters and has been recognized by the Governor of Kentucky for her portrayal of Rebecca Boone.

Her service as a goodwill ambassador to the visiting public and community led to her being a commissioned Kentucky Colonel, the highest honor a Governor from Kentucky can bestow.

Over the past five years, volunteers and staff at The Historic Daniel Boone Home have received six NAI Awards; four regional and three national. Robert Pecoraro, Shirley’s husband, was awarded the Outstanding Interpretive Volunteer Award in 2018, and Barney Combs received the award in 2019.

“We’re not thinking of quitting any time soon,” Pecoraro said of her and Robert. “We don’t have a sunset on this. We’re going to keep hanging in there as long as we can.”

The pair can be found at most major program events and specially scheduled “Visits with Daniel and Rebecca Boone.”

2020 Census: St. Charles County response high; population counts still to be announced St. Charles County may see an increase in federal funding, thanks to county residents who participated in the 2020 Census. The county had the highest response rate of Missouri’s 115 counties at 81.6 percent, a rise from 77.3 percent for the 2010 census.

Census results are used to determine the number of congressional seats for each state and to distribute more than $675 billion in federal funds, grants and other support to states, counties and communities for schools, hospitals, roads, public works and other vital programs.

While data collection is complete, and 99.9 percent of addresses across the nation have been accounted for, the U.S. Census Bureau is still in the process of compiling the detailed information. Population counts will be given to the U.S. President Donald Trump by the Dec. 31 statutory deadline.

Census efforts began locally in July 2019, when County Executive Steve Ehlmann appointed 21 community leaders to form the St. Charles County Complete Count Commission. The purpose of the commission was to promote census aware-

ness and encourage participation in the process throughout the county. The commission worked diligently with community partners, including municipalities, school districts, businesses, non-profit organizations and the library district to educate residents on the importance of completing the census, and how the county benefits from the data compiled from census results.

“The commission kept the momentum going throughout the year despite being in the middle of a pandemic,” said County Executive Ehlmann. “I want to thank them for their efforts and congratulate St. Charles County on a successful response.

This will have a positive impact on the future of our county.”

St. Charles County’s response includes self-response, as well as nonresponse follow up by census enumerators. This was the first time census information could be submitted online, and it was the preferred method of response according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The county joined 25 of the nation’s 3,215 counties as top responders.

Inspiration Corner: How to lose weight and get rich “Happiness is beneficial for the body, but it is grief that develops the powers of the mind.” – Marcel Proust We cling to dreams of health, wealth and happiness but more often find ourselves in the monotonous groove of reality. We are chunky, dispirited and tired. We are also broke. We keep snapping our fingers, but nothing is happening.

I recently came across the story of Kenny Saylors – a man who is morbidly obese. At 483 lbs. he made the decision to lose weight and reclaim his life. He joined forces with a trainer and is learning how to “box his way from fat to fit”. His website, www.reinventingkenny.com, is a slick production of motivational videos, but buried beneath the veneer is a man fighting for his life.

So far, Kenny has lost 100 lbs., but a recent video chronicles his discouragement upon reaching a plateau.

He said, “It’s aggravating. I’m putting in all these intense hours of working out and I’m not losing the weight as fast as I’d like to.”

He went on to say his emotional response led him to relapse. “I’m fighting against my very nature which is the emotional component of my eating problem.”

I would like to suggest this moment as the most important moment in our journey. The moment when the temptation to give up and give in is the strongest. This is the moment we choose to live or die.

Those of us with powerful addictions want so badly to snap our fingers and be healed. The suffering we endure is so intense it becomes difficult to make rational decisions. We crave the thing that

is killing us and frankly, will-power alone is not enough to set us free.

There is one who wants to rescue us from these bitter chains.

“I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.” (Isaiah 42:6-7) God made this promise and fulfilled it through his son, Jesus. Those who believe in his name are born again into new spiritual life.

Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3) The “poor in spirit” are those who recognize they need God’s help. The kingdom of heaven is described as a place of everlasting joy. There is no night there. Neither are there tears. Only the sorrowing can fully grasp the hope such a place inspires.

St. Charles mayor proclaims Nov. 19 “TPA Hearing Trust Day” Ahead of Travelers Protective Association’s Sounds of St. Louis Virtual Awareness Event, Mayor Dan Borgmeyer of St. Charles has declared Thursday, Nov. 19, “TPA Hearing Trust Day.” This proclamation is an extension of the mayor’s appreciation to the committed staff, volunteers, board of directors, and partners of TPA for the vital services they perform and their unwavering dedication to the communities they represent.

Travelers Protective Association (TPA), a nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of others, will host its first Sounds of St. Louis event this month. The mission of the Sounds of St. Louis campaign is to increase the organization’s ability to help more families through its TPA Hearing Trust grant program.

The TPA Hearing Trust serves economically disadvantaged individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing by providing grants for education, medical use, specialized treatment, or mechanical devices.

“TPA’s drive to help children and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing is the heart of who we are as an organization. Our generous members have banded together to ensure Americans have access to the services and technology they

need to hear the sounds of life,” said Albert M. Shoemaker, Jr., Chief Administrative Officer.

“TPA has made St. Louis the hub of supporting people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Thank you for joining us in this effort; we can’t do this without you!”

Sounds of St. Louis is a free virtual event that will be held on Thursday, Nov. 19. Attendees are required to register beforehand to reserve their spot. The broadcast will take place at 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. The keynote speaker for the Sounds of St. Louis is critically acclaimed Academy Award winner, Marlee Matlin. Other speakers for the event include Robin Feder the Executive Director of the Central Institute for the Deaf, Gene Toombs IV, a Division President at MiTek, two previous TPA Hearing Trust grant recipients, and Borgmeyer himself.

The stigma surrounding the deaf and hard of hearing community continues to create barriers in employment, education, and overall acceptance. Since the inception of the 501(c)(3) TPA Hearing Trust, they have assisted more than 5,900 individuals by awarding more than $2 million dollars in financial aid. Collectively, Wentzville events divert over 130,000 pounds of e-waste from the landfill More than 600 participants attended Wentzville’s 2020 Electronics Recycling and Document Shredding event at Holt High School on Oct. 31.

Approximately 30,000 pounds of electronic waste (e-waste) was collected and almost 6,000 pounds of personal documents were shredded as part of this recurring community event.

Documents were shredded onsite to prevent identity theft and ensure personal and confidential information was properly disposed of. Electronic items collected primarily included computer-related equipment, such as laptops, monitors and printers. This successful event was coordinated by the city with support from Midwest Recycling Center, Shred-it and the Wentzville School District.

“We are so glad we were able to offer this service to the community again in 2020. It was apparent that folks had been cleaning out their basements, garages and storage buildings.

that’s 15 tons of computers, cell phones, printers and appliances that we were able to keep out of the landfill. We want to extend a big ‘thank you’ to those who participated and to our hard-working volunteers!” said Wentzville Mayor Nick Guccione.

Collectively, since the city began hosting these events in January of 2018, over 130,000

pounds of e-waste has been diverted from the landfill. The city plans to continue these events annually to help the community properly dispose of electronic waste. The next event is currently planned for Oct. 30, 2021. Watch for updates on the city’s social media channels and on its newly updated website at www.wentzvillemo.gov.

Greater St. Charles County Chamber cancels year end celebration Due to the pandemic, the current increase in positive cases, and not knowing what the status will be in late-January / early-February of 2021, the Greater St. Charles County Chamber Board has voted to not hold the Chamber’s Annual Year End Celebration. In doing so, the chamber will also not be awarding the Citizen of the Years or the Lifetime Distinguished Service Awards.

“We feel, at this time, this is the best decision for our organization and our community,” said Susan Sommer, 2020 Chairman of the Board.

Given the history of this award, this decision did not come lightly.

Based on historical documents, this award dates back to 1957 and the only time the chamber did not recognize a “Man of the Year” or “ Citizen of the Years” was in 1968 – a year when they recognized six individuals with Lifetime Distinguished Service Awards.

Mid America Teen CERT receives donation from Cedar Lake Cellars Cedar Lake Cellars Winery in Wright City has donated $1,500 to the Mid America Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). The health and safety of guests is always a top priority of Cedar Lake Cellars, and Mid America TEEN CERT members have volunteered for years at signature events to help ensure the wellness of winery visitors.

The Mid America Teen Community Emergency Response Team is a 501(c)(3) public charitable organization that has earned the distinction as the No. 1 Emergency Preparedness Youth Program in Missouri, and No. 1 Child and Youth Emergency Preparedness Program in America. The program began in 2003 and was officially established with FEMA in August of 2007, to train students who are at least 12 years and older, how to respond to any emergency situation effectively and efficiently.

“Our program has had the privilege of working with Carl and the team at Cedar Lake Cellars providing medical and other support since the early days of the Battlegrounds Mud Run and Summer Splash,” said Teen

CERT Program Director Mark Rosenblum. “We now assist with other events hosted there such as Pyromania, which draws more than 10,000 people. Being asked to work with their team is like helping out good friends, and Mid America TEEN CERT will be there alongside Cedar Lake Cellars for their next 10 years.”

The Mid America Teen CERT program teaches an average of seven-to-eight classes and performs 10-12 philanthropic events per year. Some of their training topics include providing emergency medical aid, searching for and rescuing victims safely, assisting people with special and functional needs, preparing for acts of terrorism, and collecting disaster intelligence to support first responder efforts.

Delta Dental funding provides access to $2.25 million in oral health care for U.S. veterans in 2020 As a continued part of their commitment to veteran, a number of Delta Dental companies across the country have partnered with Dental Lifeline Network’s (DLN) Lifeline Heroes Challenge for Veterans campaign. This includes a $30,000 donation to the campaign by Delta Dental of Missouri in that state and South Carolina, where the company also does business.

For many veterans, dental care is not covered by their insurance or their VA benefits. Funding provided through the Lifeline Heroes Challenge enables DLN to link hundreds of veterans with volunteer dentists who donate comprehensive care to those who need it most. To date, these Delta Dental companies have contributed $250,000 to the project, which equates to more than $2.25 million in care delivered to veterans, according to DLN. These donations significantly expanded access to oral health care for veterans, as well as recruitment efforts to find more volunteer dentists.

Across the country, Delta Dental companies are dedicated to improving the oral and overall health of Americans by making dental coverage more accessible and affordable. CarShield Collegiate League Returns to O’Fallon The O’Fallon Hoots play baseball at Carshield Field in O’Fallon.

The Hoots have announced the return of the CarShield Collegiate League for the 2021 summer schedule for the second season and will operate around the inaugural season of the Prospect League’s O’Fallon Hoots.

“Last summer, the CarShield Collegiate League had the opportunity to show the O’Fallon community our local collegiate players and we are thrilled to

be able to do it again in 2021,” Hoots General Manager David Schmoll said. “This area loves baseball and between our Prospect League and CCL schedules, we’ll have games almost every night at CarShield Field.”

The CarShield Collegiate League will host teams made up of primarily local players playing games in O’Fallon. Each team will play 45, seven-inning games. All regularly scheduled games will be doubleheaders.

A full schedule of games, rosters, coaches and theme nights will be announced at a later date. Name the team contests for the teams are coming soon.

Directions: Cook barley according to package directions. Drain and cool.

Producer Irwin Winkler talks about ‘Rocky,’ changes in movie exhibition

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

n IMDb (Internet Movie Database), the entry for Irwin Winkler is quite extensive. The prolific movie producer and director put his mark on such classic films as “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” with Jane Fonda, “Raging Bull,” “The Right Stuff ” and “Goodfellas.” Winkler also was on hand when the first “Rocky” movie was made in the 1970’s and he continued to be part of such sequels as 2006’s “Rocky Balboa” and the new “Creed” spinoff movies. One of his most recent credits was on Martin Scorsese’s 2019 crime drama “The Irishman.”

In 2002, I joined a roundtable discussion with Winkler, who at that time was promoting the Jennifer Lopez thriller “Enough.”

The conversation turned to the film industry and how things had changed since the 1970’s. It’s interesting to note that his comments 18 years ago still ring true today.

“I don’t think I could get ‘Raging Bull’ made today. I don’t think I could get ‘Rocky’ made today,” Winkler explained. “If you came along with a low-budget film with a

Each day I keep telling myself, “This is the worst thing that can happen: murder hornets and then a meteor the size of a refrigerator hurtling towards earth. Okay, okay, a refrigerator hurtling towards Earth filled with murder hornets might be muckier. You got me there.”

But, after that I tell myself it can’t possibly get any worse, of course, it does and the next catastrophe happens. Afterwards, my husband and I scurry about like ants in a panic and stock up on more TP and put on our face masks then seal ourselves in our leadlined bunker and wait it out.

It’s like we’ve been sitting on top of one of those crazy evil jack-in-the-boxes. We wait anxious and worried and then suddenly it pops up and scares the livin’ chicken livers out of us. But then we settle in and get comfy and believe the worst is over and it won’t—BOOM! Completely covered in muck even muckier than last time around!

So what’s the latest out-of-the-blue weirdo thing happening?

We’re now in the midst of a knock ‘em out, kick ‘em in the head kind of election. If you thought the first debate was a hot mess of a train wreck, you were sadly mistaken. That was a mere water balloon fight, this is also a balloon fight, only the water inside is frozen solid.

One side claims victory, the other side claims

fraud. I’m not sure how this will end, but it’s bound to only get worse.

How is the victor to be determined?

Maybe they could play Rock, Paper, Scissors? Hmm, I don’t trust either of them with rocks or scissors.

Meanwhile as this goes back and forth, both contenders are as mad as angry hornets.

Now there’s an idea.

Maybe we could place both candidates into a refrigerator filled with murder hornets until they can play nice.

Until then, we’ll be waiting patiently until the next ka-boom.

What! Alex Trebek, the king of Jeopardy has been taken from us!

I’ll take, “What is the worst year in the history of putrid armpit years?” for $400.
