Wentzville police officer partners with community to bring fitness program to the intellectually and physically disabled By Brett Auten The benefits are boundless when it comes to exercise and fitness. The physical, mental and spiritual fabrics of our being get a liftoff after a good session of raising the heart rate. A group of St. Charles County residents and business owners are making sure those opportunities are open and available to anyone. The program Emerge Everyone has taken its first steps toward providing a health and fitness regime for the physically and intellectually disabled. Emerge Everyone is a partnership between Wentzville K9 police officer Jason Davis, the Wentzville organization Andrew’s Hugs and the St. Charlesbased Emerge Fitness Training. Just two sessions in, Emerge Everyone has taken clients from Boone Center Inc., and Community Living Inc., and put them through a fun yet challenging course of exercises and obstacles. “It was Jason’s idea, and we thought it was a great thing to do because no one was doing anything like it,” Emerge Fitness owner Matt Pirtle said. “Then we started networking.”

Davis said the spark came after volunteering at a Special Olympics competition and talking with parents about where the athletes trained and prepared for their events. One thing Davis learned was that a lot of physical activity programs for the physically and intellectually disabled stop at the high school level due to funding. With such opportunities scarce, Davis was motivated. “Once we came together, we started going full force,” Davis said. “One of the goals is that we wanted everyone to come in and be comfortable in a gym environment. Our mission is to bring individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities together for group fitness and make it a fun, social, inclusive event that involves exercising and improves overall health.” One of the organizations Davis turned to was Andrew’s Hugs. Andrew’s Hugs was created in memory of Andrew Norton. Andrew had Prader-Willi Syndrome, a chromosomal disorder that affected him both mentally and physically. However, that did not stop Andrew from living a full and happy life. That all-encompassing life was partially due to his involvement with Adult Recreation through Community Living, Special Olympics, and his

employment at BCI. Andrew was fortunate to have the means to participate in just about every event he wanted to, from Cardinal games, Blues games, Mizzou games, shows at the Muny and the Fox, and too many other outings to count. But, there are a lot of adults with disabilities who are not so fortunate and that in part was the motivation in launching Andrew’s Hugs. Since its inception less than two years ago, Andrew’s Hugs raises money to ensure that everyone has a chance to enjoy life to the fullest. Andrew’s Hugs’ specialty is fundraising. With the family having deep Wentzville connections through their day jobs in real estate and education, they have been able to raise equity for BCI and Community Living and other organizations. Andrew’s Hugs has paid for the first fiveweek sessions of Emerge Everyone. “This is how we want Andrew’s Hugs to evolve, to help start programs like this,” Julie Ragusky, Andrew’s sister, said. “Everyone has to have a purpose. Everyone has to be able to hang out with friends.” Evolve Everyone is not just for clients See FITNESS page 2
