By Brett Auten This time of year, especially, it can be easy to forget those who have done so much.

Thankfully, a large group of local volunteers are making sure that won’t happen.

On Saturday, Dec. 15 Wreaths Across America and its national network of volunteers lay over 700,000 memorial wreaths at 1,000 locations in the United States and beyond, including ceremonies at the Pearl Harbor Memorial, as well as Bunker Hill, Valley Forge and the sites of the Sept. 11 tragedies.

And in the St. Charles and St. Louis area, it will be no different.

The Caroline Close Stuart Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will lay holiday wreaths on veterans’ graves in the St. Charles County area.

“We want to make sure these men and women’s role in our country is never forgotten and we can insure this by placing wreaths on the graves during the holidays,” Marilyn Hartnett, regent of the Caroline C Stuart Chapter, said.

One hundred years ago the Missouri DAR surveyed the state and marked a number of the Revolutionary War graves.

This year, chapter members will mark the graves of 14 Revolutionary War Patriots who came to Missouri after the war long before Missouri became a state. They are Bowles Abbington, Joseph Baugh, James Bryan, John Castilio, Warren Cottle, David

“Our goal is to bring this tradition to our community and open it up to all who wish to honor a veteran,” Hartnett said. “Many of these veterans no longer have family who can do this, so it is a privilege for us to honor their service in this simple way.”

‘Holiday Tribute’ from cover diers are not forgotten. David A. Miller, a Lieutenant Colonel with the Civil Air Patrol, said that it’s precisely during this time of hustle and bustle that we need to take the time to let those veterans and their families know that they are not forgotten and hat we will never forget.

“Unfortunately, the deadline for sponsoring a wreath for this year’s event was Monday,” Miller said. “Any wreaths sponsored after that date will be credited to next year’s event.”

But there are other ways to help out and the best is to volunteer on Saturday, Dec. 15 at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery to lay the wreaths on veterans’ gravesites.

“Hundreds of volunteers are needed to help

place thousands of wreaths,” Miller said. “We may not top last year’s incredible total of more than 10,000 wreaths placed, but we will still need help to put them all out on that Saturday right after a short ceremony that begins at 11 a.m. sharp. This same event is occurring at the same time at other veterans’ cemeteries and memorials all across Missouri, so those who can’t make it to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery can participate at another location that might be closer to them.”

Meridian Waste announces recycling changes in Wentzville Meridian Waste, an integrated, non-hazardous solid waste services company, announced changes to service for recycling customers in Wentzville, effective Dec. 1.

Resource Management’s Earth City Materials Recovery Facility notified Meridian Waste that they would no longer accept single stream recyclables collected curbside from any residential customers effective November 2018. World market conditions and current contamination levels have forced many processors into an unsustainable model to continue operating as before, and thus, changes to curbside residential recycling programs are necessary.

Items still accepted for curbside collection within these cities include: aluminum, tin and steel cans, and plastics labeled 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7. Black plastics as

well as plastics labeled 4 and 6 are not acceptable for recycling.

The following items are no longer accepted for curbside recycling collection: glass bottles and jars, mixed paper (newspapers, magazines, junk mail, computer paper, telephone books) and corrugated cardboard. These items can either be placed in the garbage or recycled at designated recycling drop-off sites. When in doubt, throw it out, as recyclables contamination is a threat to the ability to process and market clean recyclables from the entire collected load.

“This crisis is sweeping the U.S. and frustratingly, it’s impacting the greater St. Louis marketplace,” said George Sides, area president for Meridian Waste. “Recycling is a true cycle and requires viable buyers of non-contaminated processed

materials to be a truly sustainable system.

We are hopeful that the market will correct itself over time; however, in the meantime we must find alternative solutions and make some significant changes to the way that we recycle. Through some out-ofthe-box thinking and working with local processors, Meridian Waste is pleased to offer a dual collection recycling program processed at properly permitted facilities to ensure that these citizens still have the opportunity to recycle and help preserve valuable natural resources in a clean and sustainable manner.”

Local general honored with Women in American History Award

By Debby Stopke On Nov. 3, the St. Louis Soldiers Memorial Military Museum was officially reopened after several years of renovation. Brigadier General Jeannie Leavitt, a native of St. Louis, was honored as the keynote speaker for the grand reopening. The Saint Charles Chapter of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) chose this as a fitting opportunity to recognize the general with the Women in American History Award. Regent Laura Ross-Dedloff and Vice Regent Joyce Townsend were on hand to make the presentation in person.

Brigadier General Jeannie Leavitt is the Air Force’s first female fighter pilot with more than 3,000 flight hours, with over 300 combat hours including operations Summer Watch, Northern Watch, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. She has risen through the military ranks to achieve the rank of Brigadier General now serving as the current Commander of the Air Force Recruiting Service at Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Her achievements in a male dominated field is an inspiration to other young women to serve our country in ways that at one time were unthinkable. But today, thanks to women like Leavitt, the sky is the limit.

St. Charles County Ambulance District earns highest possible credit rating from Moody’s St. Charles County Ambulance District (SCCAD) has received a triple-A rating, the highest rating possible, from Moody’s Investors Service a leading global credit rating, research and risk analysis firm.

The district applied for the bond rating in connection with an initial sale of $47.9 million of the $70 million of bonds authorized by voters in August. Moody’s released a report that describes the rationale for assigning the rating including a modest debt burden, stable financial operations and sizable reserves.

Joy Howard, the district’s financial advisor, noted that in addition to the State of Missouri, SCCAD is now one of only four governmental units in the state to have a Moody’s triple-A rating.

“Just as individuals benefit by having excellent credit scores, the triple-A rating will result in the lowest possible interest cost on the district’s bonds,” Howard said.

Howard indicated that the district will save approximately $1,050,000 of interest by having the highest bond rating compared to the next rating grade on its initial bond sale.

“The district’s trend of surplus operations and conservative budgeting practices contributed to the high rating,” said SCCAD Chief Taz Meyer.

“We are proud to be among the small group of Missouri governments to achieve a triple-A rating, and we expect to continue achieving strong results going forward.”

The district plans to sell the bonds by competitive bidding on Nov. 29. Projects slated for completion utilizing funds generated by the bonds include acquisition of property for new ambulance stations and a consolidated district headquarters facility, construction of said facility, and purchase of advanced life support units and lifesaving equipment.

It was 6 a.m. and I was busy stacking toys at Wal-Mart on Black Friday. Suddenly the doors opened and a flood of people poured down the aisles.

I heard them before I saw them.

The sound was like the raucous clatter of galloping antelope. The only difference was this; stampeding antelope are friendlier.

Have you ever seen an advertisement that made you salivate?

Did you hear about an “unbelievable” sale and think, “I don’t care if I have to sell my firstborn son. I will be there.” Did you wait in line, and walk away with your new iPhone cradled gently in your arms? Or did you walk away broken hearted that the customer before you grabbed the very last Power Ranger?

I conversed with a cashier at Aldi recently. He looked a little tired so I asked him how he was holding up with the holidays.

“This is the worst time of year.

People are so rude and impatient.”

I told him I used to manage the toy department at Wal-Mart so I know a little bit about frenzied customers.

He looked at me and said, “When I was a kid, we used to hang out with our family during the holidays. Now, every store

has extended their hours for yet another sale. Everybody bolts the family situation to go shopping. It’s a shame.”

What was most telling to me was that this was a relatively young man. Still, he expressed what so many people feel this time of year, namely, that he values human connection more than buying more stuff.

MasterCard capitalized on this feeling in 1997 when they created their “Priceless” advertising campaign. The slogan was, “There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there’s MasterCard.”

Many companies give credence to such aesthetics. They entice us to shop in order to create the perfect holiday experience while neglecting the real thing for which we aim. We participate by buying into the frenzy. We must have the perfect gift, the perfect meal and the perfect decorations or our family celebrations will be subpar. We have forgotten the beauty and the art of a heartfelt conversation.

We are too easily distracted by the shiny veneer of the “hottest new toy” while forgetting the rich patina of time-honored family traditions. Anyone who has recently lost a loved one can

attest to the fact that they wish they had one more holiday together to talk, laugh and hold each other. My grandmother used to say she’d wash the dishes after everyone was gone. She wanted to hold her great-grandchildren or play another game of 9 Hole Golf (a card game she immortalized in her home).

This year, skip the sale and give the gift of time. Take a moment to listen rather than to speak, smile instead of stress and purposefully relax and rest.

Salvation Army-Lincoln County Unit awarded $2,500 grant Volunteers with the Salvation Army-Lincoln County Unit are entering their busiest stretch of the year. They are currently holding the “Coats for the Cold” project and are finalizing preparations for the Red Kettle campaign.

“We do what we can to help others,” said Phyllis Cross, who serves as the group’s co-chair.

The Salvation Army has a long history of doing just that.

In the 2017-2018 fiscal year, the nonprofit organization served approximately 3,100 Lincoln County residents through its programs, which include utility/housing assistance and hosting a back-to-school event.

In September, the Cuivre River Electric Community Trust Board awarded a $2,500 Operation Round Up grant. The funds will be used to provide assistance in a variety of ways for disadvantaged Lincoln County individuals and families.

“This will help us get through the fiscal year,” Cross said.

The Red Kettle campaign, the group’s main source of funding, started the day after Thanksgiving. Bell ringers will be at Walmart and Kroger in Troy and will also be collecting donations in Winfield and Elsberry throughout the holiday season.

The group is always looking for support, whether it be a monetary contribution or from persons interested in volunteering.

“We can always use bell ringers,” Cross said.

The Salvation Army operates out of the Bread for Life Food Pantry, located at 820 Cap Au Gris Street in Troy. The office is open every Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Prospective clients must fill out an application and are screened before any assistance is provided. For more information, call 636-358-0435.

St. Charles Area Woodcarvers reach out to the community The St. Charles Area Woodcarvers teamed with the Adam Morgan Foundation for their 2018 community service project. Each of the members carved a block of bass wood to construct a friendship cane over five feet tall. Raffle tickets were sold at several events leading up to the drawing on Nov. 5. Janet Kelleher, Aging Ahead Coordinator at the St. Charles Senior Center drew the winning ticket – Paul J. Biver.

The club added to the raffle ticket sales and presented a check for $300 to Rachel Morgan, Executive Director for the Foundation. The Adam Morgan Foundation is dedicated to providing technology and support for individuals diagnosed with autism and/or other co-occurring disorders to create a new realm of possibilities, communication and opportunity for inclusion.

These donations will be used for their Apple a Day Program to purchase IPads which provide a means for individuals with autism to find their voice and be more included in their education and communities. Peoples Bank & Trust Co. will be constructing a new, full service bank branch in Cottleville.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Nov. 29 to officially mark the start of the construction.

Parents, you are invited and encouraged to bring your teen drivers with you. First Impact is a 90 – minute evidence-based traffic safety program that educates parents about Missouri’s GDL law. The program is delivered by trained GDL Coaches who coach parents by presenting key facts and proven strategies to help parents lower their teens’ crash risk by utilizing the Missouri GDL law. Lindenwood women’s basketball starts league play The Lady Lions will open the 2018-19 Mid-America Collegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) schedule with a road contest at Missouri Western.

The Lions are 5-1 in non-conference games thus far.

The team last competed two weeks ago at the Drury Thanksgiving Classic where they lost to No. 9 Drury 76-43 but rebounded to topple Truman State 94-83. Against Truman State, the Lions had two 20-point scorers in Kallie Bildner (26) and Charisse Williams (20).

Bildner led all of NCAA DII in field goal percentage at 82 percent and is 41-50 from the field this season.

The Lions, as a team, are fourth in the NCAA with a field goal percentage of 50.5 percent and is 26th nationally with a rebounding margin of 10.

The Lindenwood’s first-year head coach Katie Falco comes to the university after spending the previous 10 seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA DI South Dakota State. *Only the beginning UMSL women’s basketball team dominate contest The University of Missouri-St. Louis squad had four players in double figures on Friday evening as the Tritons defeated visiting Christian Brothers, 75-57, in non-conference action.

Coach Bennie Anderson is a St. Louis native and attended high school at Cleveland Junior Naval Academy. Played college football at Tennessee State and was a four-year letterman. After college, he played six seasons in the NFL as an offensive guard.

He is currently a teacher at Live for Life Academy in St. Louis and is coach’s high school football.

Head Coach Pimmel said, “We were together in 2009 where we won the conference championship and was amazed by his knowledge of the line play and his ability to teach it to our team. He coached offensive and defensive line. Every player said they learned more from Coach Anderson in one season than they did in four years of college.

Linemen who are trying to reach the next lever are actually doing themselves a disservice by not playing for this coach. He’s truly great.”

Pecan Apple Stuffing Ingredients: Nonstick cooking spray 1 lb mild Italian sausage 1 T. olive or pecan oil 1 yellow onion, diced 3 celery stalks, chopped 3 garlic cloves, minced 12 ounces herb-seasoned cubed stuffing

2 cups tart apples, chopped 1 1/2 cups pecan halves 1 cup chicken broth, plus additional (optional) 1 1/2 t salt 1/2 t black pepper

Directions: Heat oven to 350 F. Grease large casserole dish or 9-by-13-inch pan with nonstick spray. Set aside.

In large skillet, brown sausage, breaking into crumbles. Drain on paper towels. Discard excess grease.

In same pan over medium heat, add olive oil. Saute onions, celery and garlic 2-3 minutes, or until starting to soften and fragrant.

In large bowl, mix sausage, onion mixture, stuffing cubes, apples and

pecans.

Add broth and stir to combine. If stuffing mixture remains dry, add additional broth as desired. Season with salt and pepper; stir to combine.

Transfer stuffing to prepared baking dish. Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake 15 minutes.

The good-hearted Ralph’s honorable intentions go bad and lead to a broken steering wheel controller on the game.

Mr. Litwak, the arcade owner, decides to unplug the broken videogame, so Ralph and Vanellope must evacuate all their friends before it powers down. It’s up to these two friends to go onto the Internet, find a new controller and get “Sugar Rush” back in working order.

Moore On Life It’s supposed to be the season of holly and jolly. Unfortunately, it’s more like sneezy and wheezy at our house. Besides dumping piles of snow on us, Old Man Winter also dumped an assortment of cold bugs, throat chiggers and nose cooties. My husband and I caught several of each.

“We got this handled,” we told ourselves. Anything to avoid a doctor; they can get so personal. Besides TV commercials have convinced us that any malady out there can be handled with an over-the-counter drug. But after experimenting with enough brews and potions and pills to make a junkie jealous and seeing no improvements, we relented.

I waited in a room with other sickies and immediately rethought my decision. I had entered the chamber of the living dead. They looked like the tryouts for parts in a haunted house. They must have been the rejects. I was positioned between a moaning mummy shrouded in a blanket on one side with a blue, shivering zombie on the other. He coughed a cloud of Ebola into my breathing space. I made a mental note to douse myself with Clorox and burn my clothes when I got home.

I was finally admitted into the examining room. The door opened. Oh great, someone’s child accidentally entered my room. His mom must have sent him out for a potty break and he got the rooms mixed up. He was a youngster who vaguely looked like the boy that mowed my lawn last summer.

“Hello, Mrs. Moore. I’m Doctor Embryonic. I’ll be handling your case.”

‘Tis the season

“Wait? Aren’t you the kid who used to cut our grass?”

“Why, yes I am. It put me through med school. Now, have you been experiencing any gas, bloating or diarrhea?”

“What? Ummm, I don’t feel comfortable discussing such personal matters with my

lawn care specialist.”

“Come now, Mrs. Moore, we’re all adults here.

Now then, the color of your mucus; what would you compare it to?”

“I…I don’t know. Maybe the color of a really disgusting booger.”

“Oh, you can do better than that. Here. Take a look at this handy mucus color wheel.”

“Hmm, well, it’s somewhere between tropical sewage fungi and sunrise bread mold.”

“Excellent. Sounds like a virus. Nothing we can do. Now go home and take lots and lots of overthe-counter drugs; the kind they advertise on TV. Oh, and tell your husband he’s in bad need of grub control.”

Cindy Moore is the mother of three superlative kids, servant of two self-indulgent felines and wife to one nifty husband.

Her ficticious occupation? Archeological Humorist: someone who unearths absurdity and hilarity in strange and unusual places including public restrooms, the lint filter, and church meetings. Most recently, she excavated a find in her neighbor’s bird feeder.
