By Brett Auten Every so often, some maneuvering is called for.

The Francis Howell School District has seen splashes of significant population growth within its boundaries. And it just so happens that these increases in are occurring in two elementary schools that are already about to top out due to student population.

Currently both Fairmount and Warren Elementary are over capacity, and projections are that enrollment at those two schools will continue to increase with the present attendance boundaries.

With a current enrollment of more than 1,100 students, Fairmount is now the largest elementary school in Missouri.

The District Capacity Committee has been examining the issue for some time, and after much discussion and research, presented

a plan to the Francis Howell Board of Education that will create long-term solutions to the capacity concerns.

The process will use soft boundary changes at Fairmount and Warren that will allow students to stay in their current elementary school until they finish, with school bus transportation provided during this time. It will also allow younger siblings of those students to attend the same school as their older sibling if requested.

Only incoming kindergarten and transfer students in these areas will be required to attend the new schools.

‘Boundaries’ from cover said that every two-to-three years, boundary adjustments like these are needed to be made.

“We have an overall stable district enrollment,” Vanderpool said. “But we have pockets of real growth. It doesn’t take a whole lot of new students, around 50 or 60, before things start to get pushed to capacity.”

These soft boundary changes will affect part of the current Fairmount attendance area, which will become a Central Elementary attendance area. The plan will also shift part of the current Warren attendance area to a John Weldon Elementary attendance area and another part to an Independence Elementary attendance area. Under this plan, Central will receive approximately 84 students, and John Weldon and Independence will each receive approximately 95 students.

“It will take several years to reach these levels, and the buildings receiving these students will be staffed sufficiently to keep class sizes relatively unchanged,” Vanderpool added.

These boundary changes will also affect the current Francis Howell Middle and Francis Howell High School attendance areas north of Highway 364, they will become Saeger Middle and Francis Howell Central High School attendance areas. In a corresponding move, the current Saeger and FHC attendance areas south of Highway 364 but north of Highway 94 will become Francis Howell Middle and FHHS attendance areas. The Fairmount attendance area that is shifting to Central Elementary will also mean that those students will remain with their cohort group and continue in the feeder pattern to Hollenbeck Middle and FHC. The same guidelines that apply to the elementary changes in regards to timing and transportation will also apply to these changes.

According to Vanderpool, the proposal will allow the transition to occur gradually and minimize the impact on students and their families as we move students to schools with more available space. The plan will also align students into a cleaner feeder system for middle and high school.

The Division of Environmental Health and Protection leads the natural tree recycling collection in St. Charles County and partners with several local organizations to provide convenient dropoff locations.

To recycle natural Christmas trees in St. Charles County, residents must remove the stand, all decorations, lights and any packaging. Trees may be taken to any of these locations: St. Charles County Recycle Works locations •

County executive appoints new county counselor for St. Charles County St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann has appointed John R. Watson as County Counselor. Watson was confirmed by the St. Charles County Council and starts his position Jan. 1, 2019. He replaces Keith Hazelwood who is retiring.

“John Watson’s extensive experience with the Missouri Attorney General’s Office, combined with his legal experience in the private sector, makes him an excellent choice for this position,” says Ehlmann. “I am pleased that he has accepted this role as he will be an asset to the department and the county as a whole.”

Watson has 25 years in the practice of law including as an attorney with the Office of the Attorney General for the State of Missouri. He represented the interests of state government in the attorney general’s office for 15 years, including before administrative, state circuit and appellate tribunals.

office, he worked with legislative matters, provided dayto-day legal advice, and also served as legislative director and chief of staff. He went on to serve as chief of staff in the governor’s office from January 2009 into 2015.

Learn what’s ‘growing on’ in 2019 at Veterans Tribute Park If you are interested in the science of nature and the natural cycles of the ecosystems in our parks, then you won’t want to miss the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department’s 2019 Phenological Walks series at Veterans Tribute Park near Weldon Spring. This new interpretive program begins at 10 a.m., the first Friday of the month, from January through December, and is led by MaryAnn Fink, Park Horticulture Specialist.

Each guided walk lasts about one hour and focuses on a different aspect of nature each month. Participants will observe and discuss the cycles of budding plants, migrating birds and other naturally occurring and seasonal events that will take place at the park from year to year.

Learning about phenology is a fascinating way to deepen your appreciation and understanding of nature.

S. Lewis in “A Grief Observed” I sat in the office of my dermatologist early one morning. He was far exceeding his practice of lengthy wait times and so it was that I conjured up a conversation with a fellow patient. His name was Winston and we were united in our dislike of doctors who over-promise and under-deliver. He told me that he was a retired psychiatrist and I liked him immediately.

He was a soft-spoken man – polite and cordial. He was also articulate – a quality I enjoy immensely. As we conversed, he studied me the way a blind man explores the contours of an object; with patience and curiosity. I wondered how many stories he had heard over his years in practice but avoided asking direct questions. I wasn’t looking for a free counseling session.

Not too long into our conversation he told me that he suffered from depression. I asked him how he coped and

Depression does not define us

he said, “As well as anyone with depression.” I asked if he took medication and he nodded his head. Then we fell silent for a moment.

I confessed to him that I too have suffered with depression but had yet to find medication that was especially helpful. I also told him I had come to terms with the knowledge that various foods contributed to or alleviated my symptoms, and that exercise was often helpful.

He observed me with the eyes of a wise sage and said, “We still don’t fully understand how certain chemicals affect the brain. Medication aimed at curing depression is often science’s best guess. It helps some and not others.”

He could not know how much that helped me – how it removed the guilt and shame associated with my affliction.

After years spent listening to friends and relations insist I try yet another anti-depressant, I felt suddenly free. Depression was no longer my fault.

I told Winston that my overall approach to depression was to “celebrate the good days.” I explained that good days were a reminder that depression is a liar and a thief. Good days

also reiterate that my depression does not define me. My feelings at any given moment are not a true indicator of my worth as a human being. Does it limit my capabilities? Yes. Does it cripple me at times and render me seemingly useless?

Yes. Am I loved less because of it? Absolutely not.

Long ago I discovered that I am loved and cherished for exactly who I am by the God who created me. I now find my identity in him. When I feel lost or abandoned I cling to his promise to “Never leave or forsake me.” If you are reading this, so can you. www.destinationdiscipline.com.

‘With a View’ kicks off 2019 series of art shows at St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre The St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre has announced its 2019 art shows and competitions, and welcomes artists of all levels, from amateur to professional, to enter in an upcoming show. You do not have to be a Cultural Arts Centre member or a resident of St. Peters to enter.

The first art show of 2019 will be “With a View,” which will be on display Jan. 10-March 3, 2019. Artists can submit their artwork, which must contain something seen from a window, key hole, sun roof, etc., from 9 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Jan. 7, at the Cultural Arts Centre. An artists’ reception will be held from 6 - 7:30 p.m.

St. Charles County park volunteer receives national interpretation award St. Charles County Parks longtime Boone Home volunteer Colonel Robert Pecoraro of Cottleville recently received the 2018 Outstanding Interpretive Volunteer Award from the National Association of Interpretation (NAI) at the group’s national workshop on Nov. 30 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Pecoraro is only the 12th person to be honored with this prestigious award. He also received the NAI’s Region 6 2017 Outstanding Interpretive Volunteer Award last year along with fellow parks volunteer Colonel Barney Combs.

The Outstanding Volunteer Interpreter Award is presented to an NAI member who has worked five or more years as a volunteer interpreter, whose educational background is not in interpretation, and whose current volunteer duties are in front-line interpretation or administration of an interpretive program. They must demonstrate a mastery of interpretive techniques and program development, and must demonstrate initiative and a dedication to the affiliated institution.

For more than 30 years, Pecoraro, a certified interpretive guide, has been an active volunteer.

He has donated thousands of hours of service as an advocate for historic and cultural preservation at The Historic Daniel Boone Home near Defiance. As a volunteer, he brings the legacy of Daniel Boone to life by bridging the past to the future through first-person interpretation of John Filson. Filson was Boone’s biographer, a Revolutionary War veteran, surveyor and the

Cottleville firefighters fight winter cold with coats for FHSD students

More than 400 children in the Francis Howell School District will be warm this winter thanks to the efforts of the Cottleville Firefighters Outreach.

Students at elementary schools across the district recently received brand-new coats as part of Operation Warm, a nonprofit focused on ensuring kids have a winter coat, helping to improve school attendance and overall wellness.

“We love doing this because we want to help our community and we love to see the smiles on kids’ faces when they get a new coat and they know they’re going to be warm this year,” said Cottleville Firefighters Outreach Executive Director Garrett Ryan. “We love giving them someone to look up to, and know that there are people out there that are trying to help them and will always be looking out for them.”

FHSD teachers and counselors helped identify the students in need, who were then able to pick

out a warm, colorful coat of their choice. Firefighters made sure every coat fit every child perfectly and wrote the students’ names on the coat’s “made just for you” tag.

Students were excited not only to receive a new coat, but also to meet local firefighters. One fourth-grader said, “It makes me happy because they’re being really nice and taking time out of their day to give us coats.” Another student in third grade said, “It feels good to get a free coat, and they save people’s lives, too!”

Cottleville Firefighters Outreach holds a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, including the Haunted Trail, to raise funds for this program.

This year, they were able to raise $8,000 to purchase coats for kids in need. FHSD is grateful for the support of the Cottleville firefighters and all of our community partners who help provide goods and services for our students.

Students across the Wentzville School District joined millions of other K-12 students learning computer code as part of Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 3-9). “Hour of Code” is a global campaign designed to get students interested in computer science – the skill that programs our modern world.

Hour of Code offers web-based lessons in computer coding that are aimed at every age group. Schools held Hour of Code sessions, had guest speakers, and students have also been logging on at home. Some classes took advantage of the popularity of the video games “Fortnite” and “Minecraft” to teach coding, by having elementary students code characters in these games to dance or perform other tasks.

“Coding and computer science careers are two of the most in-demand professions in our area,” said Dr. Karen Hill, WSD Director of Professional & Program Development. “It is imperative for our students to be exposed to coding, especially at a young age.”

Computer science develops students’ computational and critical-thinking skills and shows them how to create, not simply use, new technologies.

“It is essential that students are exposed to the field of computer science in our K-12 system, as it is foundational in transforming the way a student thinks about the world,” said Hadi Partovi, founder and CEO of Code.org, a Seattle-based national nonprofit that works to expand access to computer science and increase participation by women and minorities.

Photo courtesy Wentzville School District Holt senior Paige Pieper has earned an exceptional distinction at the semiannual National High School Journalism Convention, co-sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association.

With attendance of more than 4,000 delegates from across the U.S. and abroad, the JEA/NSPA convention is the largest gathering of student journalists in the country. The convention lasted three days, and over that time students and advisors had the opportunity to attend learning sessions with top broadcast, digital and print journalists.

The fall conference’s keynote speaker was Pete Souza, an American photojournalist, and former Chief Official White House Photographer for U.S. Presidents Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama.

“I think being a student journalist at this time is important,” Pieper said. “We learn about the journalism process and ethics which helps us in everyday life. I plan on attending college to get a journalism degree so I am grateful for the opportunity to ‘get my toes wet’ and get an idea of what I want to spend the rest of my life doing.”

Holt High School student receives excellent rating at national writing competition Holt senior Paige Pieper has earned an exceptional distinction at the semiannual National High School Journalism Convention, co-sponsored by the Journalism Education Association (JEA) and the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA). She received an “Excellent” rating in the Editorial Writing category of the highly competitive JEA Write-off competition.

Each entry in the competition, which was held in Chicago last month, was judged by a minimum of two qualified experts in the field.

“It was very competitive,” Holt journalism advisor Sydney Swanson said. “I helped judge a Caption Writing Write-off contest, and more than half of them received no award. Paige’s category required her to go into a room, analyze three articles, receive a prompt and write an editorial in two hours.”

“My work with the journalism team has made me see the world in a new way and has made me think critically about things I normally would have only given a passing glance to,” said Pieper. “This allowed me to look at the contest topic in a unique way. I have gotten a lot of practice writing over the past few years through the Holt program, which helped me calm my nerves so I could do what I love to do. My journalism teachers, Ms. Swanson and Mrs. Mills, have been a huge part of my decision to pursue journalism and I am thankful for the time and effort they have put into making me the best possible journalism student I can be.”

College Match Scholarship Recipients are admitted early to QuestBridge college partners with guaranteed, full four-year scholarships that are provided by the colleges and universities, ensuring these students and their families that an education at a top college

can be affordable.

One year of tuition at Northwestern, including room and board, is $78,000. Burnett is one of 16,248 applicants to QuestBridge this year; seven percent of applicants were matched.

QuestBridge’s 40 college partners include top liberal arts colleges such as Amherst, Pomona, and Williams and exceptional research universities such as Columbia, Duke, Rice, Stanford, and Yale.

Two SCC welding instructors recognized for excellence St. Charles Community College welding instructors Steve Schuetz and Mike Kamp received awards for excellence from the American Welding Society (AWS) at their annual meeting on Dec. 6.

Steve Schuetz received the St. Louis Chapter’s Certified Welding Inspector of the Year award.

This award is given to a welding instructor who, through professional activity and civic activities, is considered to have enhanced public awareness and opinion of both the American Welding Society and the Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) program or otherwise made an outstanding contribution to the science of welding inspection. From these exemplary activities, the member has made outstanding contributions to the enhancement of the art and science of welding.

Mike Kamp received the District Instructor Award in recognition of quality instruction-

al performance devoted to the promotion and expansion of welding skills and knowledge for SCC students.

SCC has several welding programs including the American Welding Society Certificate, Basic Welding Certificate of Specialization, Advanced Welding Certificate of Specialization, Entry Level Welding Certificate of Achievement and Welding Associate of Applied Science. SCC recently added welding classes to their credit course offerings to meet the demand from local employers seeking skilled workers. Instructors for SCC’s welding program teach welding skills to AWS standards, offering students the opportunity to earn an industry-recognized credential, a valuable tool when seeking employment.

Upon completion of SCC welding programs, job placement is simplified, as SCC has 20 manufacturing partners who are ready to hire.

Women of the American frontier worked hard, were strong-willed, and had to be tough in order to face and survive daily challenges. Join the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department to celebrate and experience the lives of these women during “A Day in the Life: Frontier Women,” a new program offered from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Historic Daniel Boone Home near Defiance. During this oneday event, women ages 16 and older will learn the skills frontier women had to have to survive during the early 1800s. A few of the skills include fire starting, tallow candle making, black powder rifle firing and wool carding.

Lindenwood wrestler picks up some hardware Lindenwood University wrestling junior Carlos Jacquez was named Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics (MIAA) Wrestler of the Week after winning his second title recently.

No. 4 Jacquez started placing first in the twoday Midwest Classic that concluded on Sunday in Indianapolis, Indiana.

He then won his second title on the year in a bracket that included nine wrestlers ranked in the 125-pound weight class.

The returning All-American had one tech fall and two major decisions including a 12-1 major decision in the finals.

Jacquez, an Aurora, Illinois native, is 11-0 this season with three pins, two tech falls, and two major decisions.

Bacon French Toast Bake

Directions: Leave bread slices out, at room temperature, at least 3 hours, or until slightly stale.

Generously coat 9-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Arrange bread, slightly overlapping.

In large bowl, whisk eggs, heavy cream,

milk, Gruyere cheese, maple syrup and cinnamon. Add chopped bacon, saving 2 tablespoons for later. Pour over bread in baking dish. With hands, press down on bread to submerge.

Cover baking dish with plastic wrap.

Refrigerate at least 5 hours, or overnight.

Ingredients: 1 small loaf challah or brioche bread, cut into 1⁄2-inch-thick slices nonstick cooking spray 6 large eggs 1 cup heavy cream 1 cup whole milk 1/2 cup grated Gruyere cheese 1⁄3 cup maple syrup 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 4 slices bacon, cooked and chopped 1/4 cup grated Swiss cheese 1/2 cup blackberries 1 teaspoon powdered sugar, for dusting Heat oven to 375 F. Remove plastic. Sprinkle remaining bacon and Swiss cheese over top of bread mixture.

Bake 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and set.

Top with blackberries and dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Penny Marshall really was in a league of her own

n Dec. 17, Penny Marshall, a fantastic comedienne, actress and director, passed away. Marshall leaves behind an impressive legacy of television appearances and feature films as well as some memorable moments on “Saturday Night Live.” She was very close and supportive of her brother, the legendary sitcom creator Garry Marshall who passed away two years ago.

Early in her career, Marshall appeared in various sitcoms and dramas. Her reoccurring role as Myrna, secretary to the slovenly Oscar Madison in “The Odd Couple,” helped put her on the radar. On the classic sitcom “Happy Days,” which was created by brother Gary, she played Laverne DeFazio opposite Cindy Williams’ Shirley Feeney. Laverne and Shirley were so memorable that a spin-off series was soon created especially for them.

Arguably, Penny Marshall’s greatest achievements were behind the camera. The underappreciated 1986 comedy “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” was the perfect vehicle for Whoopi Goldberg.

She played a bank employee and computer expert remotely helping a spy return home. Director Marshall channeled Goldberg’s broad comedic style and talent for physical comedy into the story.

Two years later, “Big” was, well, really big. In 1984, actor Tom Hanks made waves with the romantic fantasy “Splash,” but his follow-up films were largely mediocre. In “Big,” Hanks

performing films such as “Joe Versus the Volcano” when he played Jimmy Dugan, a washedup former Cubs star coaching a professional girls baseball team. After that role, Hanks became a superstar, winning back-to-back Oscars for “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump.”

Marshall’s daughter Tracy Reiner also had a featured role in “A League of Their Own.” When I talked to Marshall on the phone in 2001 about “Riding in Cars with Boys,” she joked that her baseball movie should have its own cable channel because it was on TV all the time. In 1993, the film even spawned a short-lived television series of the same name.

Gifted with various talents, Penny Marshall was a shining star in Hollywood. Her contributions to television and film are undeniable as was her own comedic ability. She really was in a league of her own.

The big holiday has come and gone. Hopefully everyone got what they wanted…or deserved!

Particularly the Grinches out there better known as porch pirates.

Because of the big uptick in buying online there was an increase in the number of boxes delivered to homes this Christmas. Sadly, all of this has led to an increased production of buttheads. According to one report, 25 million packages are stolen each year from porches, which equates to 25 million buttheads. That’s way too many heads made from butts. Something has to be done!

One determined citizen came up with his own ingenious remedy. After numerous hits by these pirate punks and no assistance from an overwhelmed law enforcement agency; he took matters into his own hands. Using his engineering background, he came up with a maniacally delicious form of payback.

First came an authentic-looking package, which contained cameras for recording and a GPS for tracking. Next came a delightful little bit of engineering wizardry. Inside the box was a gizmo, which upon opening, would spew a typhoon of glitter into the pirate’s den of hate. But why stop there? Perhaps the lawbreaker may find it amusing to be plastered in a deluge of twinkles. So, as an added bonus, the machine also contained a canister which sprayed clouds of horrifically pungent intestinal odors. No one could enjoy being cov-

The video is priceless. Oh what fun it is to watch thugs get their reckoning in real time.

But what about those of us who are mechanically impaired? Until this device hits the market, here is a suggestion to get back at these lowlifes.

Stack a few boxes by the door and include any of the following: 1.

Dirty diapers - Nothing will change a person’s life of crime faster than opening a box expecting expensive electronics only to be whacked in the nose holes with a blast of putrid baby doodies.

2. Garbage – Missed garbage night? Not to worry, simply box up your trash, leave it on the porch—gone in minutes. You’ll never have to worry about missing it again.

3. Unruly teenagers – Stick your sassymouthed teen in a box outside and watch it vanish within seconds. Once the box is opened, the fun begins. The teen’s attitude will kick in as they roll their eyes then immediately demand to be taken to the mall. They will then start texting their legal counsel while insisting on being served some fast food. The only downside…the criminal will return the box within five minutes.

So play it safe out there and if all else fails go back to buying everyone gift cards again.
