A potpourri of events and activities await as the town goes all in May 20-22.

The highlight of the weekend, which coincides with Wentzville Days, will be the first Wentzville Q and Brew, sponsored by Sugarfire Smoke House and hosted by the Wentzville Downtown Business Association.

“You can think of Wentzville Days as a big pie and many community organizations are bringing different pieces to that pie,” Angel Magasano, of the Wentzville Downtown Business Association said.

The Wentzville Downtown Business Association is partnering with the Wentzville Parks Department and the St. Louis Barbeque Society to bring a sanctioned BBQ contest to Wentzville Days Fair and Music Festival. Experienced Pit Masters from all over the region compete for cash prizes and bragging rights and the opportunity to move forward competitively. Competitors will be competing in the categories of chicken, ribs, beef brisket, pork and people’s choice.

“The St. Louis Barbeque Society has been everywhere in the region except St. Charles County,” Magasano said. “They have been looking to break in and partner with someone and the Downtown Business Association was happy to make it happen.”

Now this is the important part. The People’s Choice contest will be the public’s only chance to taste the BBQ. While the barbeque competition will be closed from the general public, the People’s Choice portion is where everyday folks can weigh in on what tastes the best. Each People’s Choice competitor will be challenged to prepare a thick cut “Wentzville Chop” specially prepared with a craft beer brewed by Wentzville’s own Friendship Brewing Company. The community is invited to vote for their favorite thick cut “Wentzville Chop” during the “People’s Choice” contest scheduled for Saturday, May 21 from 3 – 5 p.m. Ballots are $10 each and entitle the holder to a sample from each of the competitors.

Ballots are available in advance or at the Poage Chevrolet Craft Beer Garden located at Friendship Brewing Company at 100 Pitman Street. Advanced ballots may be picked up on Saturday, May 21 at the Craft Beer Garden ticket tent.

Sugarfire will be selling its wellknown grub for those who happen to miss the People’s Choice and the Poage Chevrolet Craft Beer Garder will be the place to go to help wash it all down.

New truck and tractor pull event debuts in Wentzville The Missouri Invitational Truck and Tractor Pull presented by Rob Hamann’s American Family Insurance Agency is being held on May 21 at Rotary Park in Wentzville.

The truck portion of the event is invitational, and we have confirmed the appearance of some of the top Pro Stock 4x4 trucks and drivers from all around Missouri. These drivers will compete against each other in the first-ever bracket style GTS Fiberglass Eliminator Challenge. It will also feature both the En-Gravs Super Stock Tractor and the Lincoln Powersports Pro Stock Tractor classes presented by the Missouri State Tractor Pullers Association. Music to our ears – ‘The Sound of Music’ is brilliant from head to toe

The classic Rogers and Hammerstein musical “The Sound of Music” premiered at the Fabulous Fox Theatre April 26 and ran through May 8. This spirited and beloved musical story on stage made this timeless, classic production fresh and alive once again. From the lead roles of Maria (Kerstin Anderson), Captain Georg von Trapp (Ben Davis) and The Mother Abbess (Melody Betts) to the polished performances of the Von Trapp children children (Paige Silvester, Jeremy Michael Lanuti, Maria Suzanne Knasel, Quinn Erickson, Svea Elizabeth Johnson, Mackenzie Currie and Audrey Bennett), the production was

top notch!

The lavish scene sets and costumes did not disappoint and the singing was phenomenal with a stand out performance by newcomer Anderson as Maria.

Even though the movie was on my mind while watching the live production, I didn’t mind the subtle changes made for this live stage production. The production also included two songs that didn’t appear in the film. The melodies were beautiful and joyful and of course the heart of the story is one for all ages.

Bank of Old Monroe breaks ground on new location in Troy President/CEO of The Bank of Old Monroe Darrell Harke announced the newest Banking Branch Facility coming to Troy.

The Bank of Old Monroe was established in the town of Old Monroe in September 1906.

The bank is locally owned and operated by local families, many of which were born and raised in this area. Shareholders of the one bank holding company known as Cuivre River Bancshares, Inc are the owners. St. Charles County prosecuting attorney to speak at SCC’s 2016 commencement St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney Tim Lohmar will be the keynote speaker at the 28th annual St. Charles Community College commencement exercises May 14. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the gymnasium of the College Center on the SCC campus.

“As a St. Charles County native, Tim is committed to integrity and justice in our community,” said Todd Galbierz, SCC interim president and vice president for administrative services. “His family has a legacy of public service in the community and here at SCC. Anime St. Louis convention returns to St. Charles

By Brett Auten Anime St. Louis is set for its 11th go-around and is returning to St. Charles.

Anime St. Louis will be taking place on May 13-15 at the St. Charles Convention Center.

The three-day event is open to all ages. Children 12 and under receive free admission with the purchase of an adult badge.

Registration is available online or at-door.

In its early incarnations, Anime St. Louis was at the St. Charles Convention Center but at the time the venue was too vast for the crowd.

“The past six years we were at Gateway Center in Collinsville, which was the most costeffective and held these type of events before,” Anime St. Louis’ Jeremy Johnson said. “The past two years we’ve been over 4,200 and were bursting at the seams.

The St. Charles Convention Center, we really enjoyed but we were just too small back in the day.”

The convention is slated to be bigger and better than ever. In addition to meeting industry talent such as voice actors and comic book artists, a large part of the convention is cosplay (the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game, especially one from the Japanese genres of manga and anime). Attendees will have the opportunity to take part in social events like dances, karaoke, game shows, tabletop and video game tournaments and more.

of Comic Con in San Diego but on the smaller scale,” Johnson said. “Anime conventions are great gatherings on pop culture and we celebrate all characters across the spectrum and share in that love of pop culture. It is a big celebration for nerdy culture that becoming more mainstream.”

Attendees are encouraged to dress in costume and explore the variety of local landmarks available for photoshoot activities. Many small businesses in Old Town will be opening their doors to convention attendees to use their establishments for

photography backdrops.

Shuttles will be provided by Anime St. Louis to transport attendees to other locations such as the riverfront, Ben Rau Memorial Garden, and many other scenic areas.

“Another fun part with the convention circuit is that scenic locations have become as big as a draw,” Johnson said. “Choosing St. Charles as opposed to downtown, we really like Main Street St. Charles. Everyone there has been welcoming it with open arms.”

O’Fallon angler takes state-record skipjack herring The Missouri Department of Conservation reports that James Lucas of O’Fallon became the most recent record-breaking angler in Missouri when he snagged a skipjack herring on the Mississippi River.

The new “alternative method” record skipjack herring caught by Lucas on April 8 weighed 1 pound, 10-ounces with a length of 16.5 inches.

This beat the previous state record, which was held by Lucas, by 2 ounces. MDC staff verified the record-weight fish using a certified scale in O’Fallon.

“I really can’t believe I broke my old record with this fish,” said Lucas. “I was trying to snag spoonbill and out of nowhere I snagged this skipjack. I’m just really grateful. It’s always nice to upgrade the state record.”

Lucas added he snagged the skipjack herring off the bank with 80-pound braided line and a 10-foot fishing pole.

“The skipjack herring didn’t put up much of fight when I snagged it. After getting it on the bank I knew the fish was going to be close to my old record, but I wasn’t sure I beat it until I got it home and put it on the scale,” he said.

Lucas is familiar with state-record fish. He also holds the state record for the skipjack herring he caught with his pole and line in 2010.

“I plan on making a replica of the skipjack herring and putting it on the wall. I also may try

to use it for bait,” he said.

Missouri state-record fish are recognized in two categories: pole-and-line and alternative methods. Alternative methods include: throwlines, trotlines, limb lines, bank lines, jug lines, spearfishing, snagging, snaring, gigging, grabbing, archery, and atlatl.

Area churches come together to sponsor baccalaureate service Thirteen churches in St. Charles County have come together to sponsor a Baccalaureate Worship Service for the graduating seniors of the Francis Howell School District.

The celebration is scheduled for 7 p.m., May 20 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cottleville.

“In past decades, most high schools had a baccalaureate service for their seniors.” said Ted House, a parent in the district who is coordinating the service.

“For various reasons most of the annual services were discontinued, but we are working to reestablish the tradition, starting with the Francis Howell

School District.”

“Graduation is an exciting and sentimental milestone.

Many of our families feel a desire for friends from all denominations to come together and celebrate God’s goodness and give thanks for His blessings. It is wonderful to see families of different churches who know each other but have never worshiped together come together and celebrate in unity. We ask the Lord to be with our children as they go out and begin an exciting but also uncertain new phase of their lives.”

This is the fourth year for the baccalaureate service in the

Francis Howell School District.

The service is also co-sponsored by the St. Charles Area Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Wentzville’s Walk to Stop Heroin to take place at Heartland Park Wentzville’s mayor and members of its board of aldermen have been directly affected by the impacts of heroin overdoses. In an effort to increase awareness about the dangers of heroin use in our community, Wentzville’s Police Department will host a Walk to Stop Heroin this May. The walk, which will be held Saturday, May 14 at 9 a.m., will begin at Heartland Park at 100 William Dierberg Dr., and end at the Wentzville Police Department’s Law Enforcement Center at 1019 Schroeder Creek Blvd. City officials will welcome attendees and lead the walk. Following, participants will hear from individuals who have been affected by heroin’s impact on their lives and the lives of those they love.

The goal of this walk is to connect our community with the available resources in hopes people will not try heroin, not even once.

The resources will provide valuable information on the signs and symptoms of use, counseling availability and emergency intervention for children during times of crisis.

Phone-y baloney Has this ever happened to you?

You’re on a busy city sidewalk briskly walking against traffic with your nose deeply submerged in a handheld device intensely engrossed in the latest funny dog video sent to you by a bestie. Afterwards, it is only appropriate that you follow up by texting that friend to tell her how much you enjoyed the video and then courteously send her the latest cute puppy memes.

As you step off the curb and are about to push send, out of the blue, a halfton SVU broadsides you in the brisket and you end up in traction for the next six weeks.

Fortunately, it would never happen to me. I have more sense. I only deal in crazy cat videos.

But, apparently this is happening all too often and action needed to be taken. So to further avoid these kinds of senseless accidents, law enforcement is now levying a pricey ticket on the spot to any dimwitted doo-doo head found texting and walking within city limits. Ha! Not really. That would be too logical and an easy-peasy kind of fix which would totally eradicate this kind of nonsense. But we all know there is no room for such radical common sense concepts in today’s world. Instead, local authorities in

one German town have opted for something more humane to the bumble-brained while incredibly costly to the lowly tax-paying citizen. They have embedded traffic lights into the sidewalk which shine red to warn smartphone users to stop ahead, yellow to yield and green to go.

Revolutionary! Now when cell users are checking their Facebook status or searching for the latest Instagram posting they won’t have to be distracted by something as annoying as a shattered femur.

The only problem is that most pedestrian smartphone users have not even noticed that these sidewalk safety devices have been installed.

Lewis & Clark Career Center students excel at SkillsUSA state competition

Students from the Lewis & Clark Career Center performed exceptionally well at the recently held SkillsUSA 50th Missouri State Leadership and Skills Conference. The school had a total of 25 students place in their respective competitions, with seven of those placements coming as first place finishes.

Students who finished first are eligible to participate in the SkillsUSA national competition, held annually in Louisville, Kentucky from June

20-24.

“We’re very impressed and pleased by the showing, but we’re not surprised,” said Dr. Andrew Stewart, assistant director of the Lewis & Clark Career Center.

“Working with these students every day, we know how talented and dedicated they are and the results reflect that.”

SkillsUSA describes their organization as a “partnership of students, teachers and industry working together

to ensure America has a skilled workforce. We provide educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education (CTE) in the nation’s classrooms.”

The Lewis & Clark Career Center is part of the City of St. Charles School District and serves the St. Charles County area by providing career and technical education to high school juniors/ seniors and adults.

SCC women’s soccer signs four recruits for fall 2016 season

St. Charles Community College women’s soccer welcomes four signees for the fall 2016 season. Recruits include Amanda Heider, Breana Colombo, Kelli Jungewaelter and Samantha Garvilla.

“All four players are going to elevate our games,” said Josh Tyler, head coach of SCC women’s soccer. “They are all quality players that should step in right away and make an immediate impact on the field.”

Amanda Heider (Hazelwood West High School) Heider played club ball at Missouri Rush for Coach Diane Monahan. At Hazelwood West High School, she was part of an All-Academic Award Team. In 2014, she was awarded SecondTeam All-Conference, and in 2015, she was awarded First-Team All-Conference.

“Amanda came to our winter session at SCC, and I immediately noticed her work ethic,” Tyler said. “She has great field presence, and I believe she is prepared to work hard at the next level.”

Breana Colombo (Oakville Senior High) Colombo played club ball with the AFA Fillies Soccer Club for Coach Jason Wyland, who is also the women’s soccer’s assistant coach at SCC. She attends Oakville Senior High. She plans to major in criminology at SCC. “Bre has been battling to get back to the level she was at, and I have full confidence she will be a great asset for SCC on the field,” Wyland said.

Samantha Garvilla (Francis Howell High School) Garvilla is a three-time State Cup Champion with the St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club, coached by Scott Stephan. She attended Darlington School in Rome, Georgia her freshman and sophomore years of high school on a soccer scholarship. After tearing her ACL for the third time, she came back to Francis Howell High School and switched to the goalkeeper position.

She is a two-year varsity player at Francis Howell High School, under the direction of Head Coach Brady Demling. Garvilla also earned AllAcademic Honors. “I have been very impressed with Sam, not only as an incredible athlete, but as a person,” Tyler said. “She has persevered through 10 surgeries and has continued to be dedicated to play at a high level. I see players quit playing after one surgery, so this is quite a testament to her dedication to be the best she can be.”

SCC starts practice on Aug. 1. The game schedule will be released in the next month.

Timberland High School student wins annual Cuivre River Youth Tour Competition Timberland High School student wins annual Cuivre River Youth Tour Competition.

Timberland High School junior Kacie Francois has been selected as a winner in the Cuivre River Electric Cooperative’s 48th Annual Youth Tour Competition. Kacie and THS junior Richard Schneider were both honored at a reception on April 20 for having been selected as two of 12 finalists out of over 300 entrants from 22 area high schools in the annual contest that begins with an essay submission. The essays, all entitled “My Favorite Cooperative Principle,” were judged based on the student’s cooperative knowledge, composition, originality, grammar and neatness.

“Among 336 contest entries, it was interesting to learn the principles our youth valued the most. In addition to Voluntary and Open Membership, Concern for Community, Education and Democratic Member Control were also popular choices,” said Lonnie Tucker, Communication Specialist and Youth Tour Coordinator.

The finalists took a cooperative knowledge-based quiz, and then presented their essays to a board of distinguished judges and special guests. Their pre-

sentations were judged on the student’s speaking ability, poise and personality, appearance and length of presentation. A combination of the quiz scores and presentation scores were used to name six winners.

As a winner, Kacie will travel to Washington, D.C. with 100 Missouri delegates June 10-16, meet with more than 1,600 delegates from across the United States, visit Congress, tour Capitol Hill, and see national historic memorials and landmarks. As a runner-up, Richard will receive a $500 Cuivre River Youth Tour scholarship to the college or university of his choice. In addition, five Timberland teachers were honored at the reception for supporting the annual contest and encouraging students to participate.

Rascals are ‘armed’ in search of post season again The River City Rascals play professional baseball in the West Division of the Frontier League at the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

As the 2016 season begins on the road for six games before starting at home the end of next week, the team has a strong presence on the mound.

Four of the primary starters last year have dropped to three returning with team leader out of the bullpen in earned run average (ERA) Will Schierholz.

Joe Scanio was a nine-game winner last season with team high 80 strikeouts. The former player in the St. Louis Cardinals organization finished with a 9-6 record and maintained a 3.63 ERA, best out of the 2015 starting rotation.

Baseball America listed Lucas Laster as one of the top prospects in the league.

In his final 21 innings he had a very stingy 1.71 ERA. The southpaw starter finished up his collegiate career at Mississippi State and then signed with the Rascals on June 14, making his debut four days later.

With the best record in the league 11-0 last year, starter right-hander Tim Koons starts his third year. He also is the last Rascals player to throw a complete game, allowing one run on four hits and struck out nine in Florence. His 6’5” stature is a large stature on the mound.

Two golfers named to conference team Freshman Salome Bleuler and senior Renee Verboven of the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s tennis team have recently been named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference Team.

Bleuler is 21-8 in singles, playing mostly at the No. 2 spot, which includes a 4-1 GLVC mark. In doubles, Bleuler is 17-9, including 13-4 with Patricia Maya. The duo was 11-5 at No. 1.

Verboven earns All-GLVC honors for the third time in her career. She owns a team-best 23-6 record and posted a 3-2 GLVC mark. In doubles, Verboven is 16-13.

The American Legion Riders of the Department of Missouri will be holding the second annual MO Legacy Ride – a three day in-state ride on June 24-26. They will be arriving for lunch at the Legion Post Home in Old Town St. Peters at approximately 12:15 p.m.

At each stop, there will be an opportunity to donate to the Legacy Scholarship Fund. “Money Monster”

Deconstructing the financial crisis on film Jodie Foster, a prolific actress and director, steps behind the camera once again for “Money Monster,” a look at the financial world. George Clooney plays Lee Gates, the host of a popular investment program (think CNBC’s Jim Cramer in a very nice suit with better hair). A bankrupt investor arrives in the studio one day and, blaming the host for his situation, holds Gates hostage on live TV. Films like “Money Monster” hit very close to home. “The Big Short,” an Academy Award-winner for best adapted screenplay, looked at the 2008 financial crisis and how it came to pass. Under Adam McKay’s direction, it deconstructed venerable institutions such as Lehman Brothers who, through their own hubris, cost countless people their homes.

To his credit, McKay made the truth a little easier to digest with humor and celebrity cameos.

Selena Gomez, for instance, appeared on camera to explain Collateralized Debt Obligations, a very real financial product being traded every day.

Gomez explained it in terms of playing blackjack against a dealer while people are betting for or against her.

The 1980’s saw a number of stock market influenced films. Kevin Bacon starred in “Quicksilver,” the tale of a broker who thinks he has a guaranteed investment. Unfortunately, Jack Casey, his character, put his father’s retirement fund on the line. After losing everything, Jack tries his hand at being a bicycle messenger before getting back into the stock market for one last score.

No discussion of financial films is complete without “Wall Street,” which popularized the expression “Greed is good.” Michael Douglas’ Gordon Gecko believed in making money no matter

what the personal cost. Charlie Sheen plays Bud Fox, an eager young stockbroker wanting to make his name on Wall Street.

Fox becomes a part of Gecko’s scheme to get inside information and ultimately pays the price for his arrogance.

Leonardo DiCaprio turned in an Oscar-worthy performance as Jordan Belfort in the loud and darkly funny “The Wolf of Wall Street.” His character, Jordon Belfort, was a real-life stock broker who made his fortune pushing low-priced “penny stocks.” Belfort, who ended up in prison, was a symbol of all the things that are wrong on Wall Street.

As “Money Monster” prepares to open, one has to wonder if another financial bubble is ready to burst. The $1.1 trillion student loan market seems ready to collapse as even more students take unsecured loans. In some areas, large amounts of rental property are being constructed, leading to thoughts of a “rental bubble.”

Ultimately, as these movies show, investors have to seek out trustworthy professionals but still make their own financial decisions. Folks like Jim Cramer definitely do not have all the answers.
