By Brett Auten It’s more than a tip of the cap and something other than a slap on the back. It’s closer to a warm hug that hangs on for just a little bit. When the residents of Jaycee Fairgrounds Village, a senior community located at 1355 Fairgrounds Road in St. Charles, are in need of emergency service it could be for a myriad of things, big or small, minimal or mortal. One by one they will walk in on April 29 and these normally unheralded service men and women will be covered in applause and waited on. They will sit behind a bountiful, U-shaped table as the residents of Jaycee Fairgrounds Village bestow their thanks upon the St. Charles County emergency personnel, EMS, firefighters, and police, the best way they know how, with a delicious spread of food. The first responders return the favor on an annual basis by cooking a breakfast for the residents of Jaycee Fairgrounds Village. “It’s actually very humbling,” Kyle Gaines, Director of Communications with the St. Charles County Ambulance
District said. For six years now the residents have banded together to host the spaghetti dinner. Lela Zweifel is the president of Jaycee Fairgrounds resident association and for three years, herself along with Jaycee Fairgrounds Building Manager Brenda Dasal rally the troops for the annual April feast. “They make many trips over here, sometimes three-times a day and maybe only once does person need to go to the hospital,” Zweifel said. “It could be that a resident has fallen down or it could be saving someone’s life. No matter the situation, they take good care of us.” For Gaines and his crew, no trip is too small or too light. “Sometimes folks just need a helping hand,” he said. “The dinner is very kind of them and very nice to offer. We have a good relationship with the (Jaycee Fairgrounds) residents and we do what we can to not only meet their emergency needs but to also educate and help them feel better prepared whether it’s in a disaster situation or their personal wellbeing.”
Jaycee Fairgrounds Village is an apartment community containing 134 rental units and is home to not more than 201 persons when fully occupied. Zweifel begins the festivities with the firemen, EMS and policemen prayers. Once everyone is seated and plates are filled with See MEALS on page 2
