By Brett Auten It’s the thrill and intensity of overtime hockey, except from the first whistle on.

The annual United States Roller Hockey Championship tournament, also known as State Wars, returns to the St. Peters Rec-Plex later this month.

An expected 3,000 athletes and 10,000 other attendees will descend onto the region, spanning locations from California to Florida, and everywhere in between.

From July 20 to Aug. 2, the three ice rinks at the Rec-Plex will be turned into inline skat-

ing rinks for State Wars 17 and will host more than 300 teams from all over North America, including teams from Colombia and Argentina.

“We’re thrilled to host State Wars again,” St. Peters Director of Recreation Phil Boettge said. “This is an amazing event that brings so many people together from around the nation and the world for great competition for a wonderful sport. We’re lucky that we have a facility such as the Rec-Plex in our community to experience this type of unique and entertaining championship tournament. We hope the community takes time to come out and

watch the action. There’s no fee to attend, so please feel free to bring the family.”

This will mark the fourth time in 10 years that the Rec-Plex has played host to the event.

Being located in the center of the country with a large airport within a short drive, makes St. Charles County an ideal location.

“We have a great partnership with St. Peters and the Rec-Plex,” State Wars Hockey President Tim McManus said. “The facility and staff are top-notch for starters. Then of course families look to do things away from the hockey rink, as State Wars also becomes a See ‘BATTLE’ page 2

Roller hockey (also known as inline hockey) teams are composed of up to four lines of players including two forwards and two defensemen on each line. There are five players including the goalie from each team on the rink at a time.

Inline hockey is a very fast paced and free flowing game, because it does not have the same rules as ice hockey. There are no blue lines or defensive zones in roller hockey unlike ice hockey. This means that, according to most rule codes, there are no offsides or icings that can occur during game play; this along with fewer players on the rink allows for faster game play. There are traditionally two 20-minute periods or four 10-minute periods with a stopped clock.

“It is an incredible atmosphere,” McManus said. “From six-andunder to the old guys, there is something for everyone. You can come in and start watching at 7-8 a.m., and watch games until midnight.”

From a local standpoint, the CarShield/St. Louis Blast are annually one of the top teams representing.

The influx of players and family members for this event is a guarantee to boost sales at hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions, potentially adding several million dollars to the local economy. The Rec-Plex also hosted State Wars 8 in 2012, State Wars 11 in 2015, and State Wars 14 in 2018.

In order to accommodate State Wars 17 and other ice events, the two ice rinks at Rec-Plex South will close on July 11, and the North Rink will close on the evening of July 13. The ice will be melted and rinks converted for inline hockey surfaces brought in special for State Wars.

The closing will take place after two ice events on July 11: the “Be a Star” skating exhibition at 5 p.m., and the Paint the Ice event at

7 p.m. “Be a Star” is a free event where you can come and watch our skaters perform, while Paint the Ice follows it and is $10 if you pre-register on Rec-Connect or $15 at the door.

After State Wars 17, the ice rinks will undergo maintenance and are tentatively set to reopen in mid-August.

Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County launches virtual Homebuyer Readiness Program Together with community partners, Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County offers free financial coaching and skills through the 2021 Homebuyer Readiness Program, which begins July 12.

The comprehensive eight-week program consists of workshops designed to help individuals overcome financial challenges to achieve their goals of homeownership, as well as learn how to navigate the often complex process in the purchase of a home. Classes will be hosted via Zoom video conferencing. Registration at habitatstcharles.org is required.

Workshop topics include credit, debt, budgeting, setting goals, saving money, as well as a complete tutorial on how to get preapproved for a mortgage. Benefits to participants in the Homebuyer Readiness Program include one-on-one coaching sessions that personalize the program to a participant’s specific financial needs and goals. Shamrock FC 330 brings mixed martial arts to St. Charles

By Jason Sibert Before a sold-out crowd of more than 400 mixed martial arts fans at Ameristar Casino in St. Charles on June 25, lightweight Evan Elder continued his string of wins with a victory over CJay Hunter.

Elder, of Hillsboro, Missouri, improves to 5-0 with the victory. The bout was fought primarily off the mat but went to the mat just a few times. Elder won 3-0, as all three judges scored the fight 32-27 after three rounds. Both fighters showed signs of exhaustion after the action.

“There a lot of obstacles, but I try to go into every fight in shape,” Elder said after his win at Shamrock FC 330. “I always try to improve.”

Elder went on to talk about the importance of mental attitude in fighting.

He said, “It’s not just about

being a champion. It’s about human excellence.”

The winner credited his opponent’s grappling skills and stuck with a strategy of avoiding them.

“CJay (Hunter) is a very talented fighter,” he said. “I wanted to keep him off of the mat.

When I hit the ground, I got up as soon as I could. I wanted to keep him standing. I think I could have hit his legs more.”

In co-main event action, St. Louis’ Drew Gigax improved to 7-0 with a first-round win over Travis Ford in the catchweight division. Gigax drew early blood, winning with 1:23 left in the first round by technical knockout. Ford hit the canvass three times in the kickboxing fight.

The main card started with St. Charles’ Jeremiah Curtwright, a welterweight, besting Tavae Lewis in one round, as the referee stopped the fight at

the 2:50 mark in the first round with Curtright landing a series of punches with Lewis against the cage.

The second bout of the main card ended in a similar way with St. Louis catchweight David Evans winning over Nikk Willyard at the 1:30 mark in the first round. The referee stopped the fight with Evans landing a series of deadly punches with his opponent on his back. Demagio Smith and Derik Scott, both of St. Louis, faced off in a lightweight bout, and Smith won 3-0 by judges’ decision.

In preliminary bouts, middleweight Austin Miller defeated Blaine Summers (technical knockout) in the first round, and Tre Lewis defeated Anthony Gillick (TKO) in the first round in catchweight competition (kickboxing).

O’Fallon to request release of 2020 Community Development Block Grant Funds The city of O’Fallon will request the release of 2020 CDBG funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on July 6 following a two-week period in which the public will have the opportunity to comment on the slated use of the funds. O’Fallon’s 2020 CDBG Annual Action Plan identifies community needs and has been proposed for the following projects: • Home improvement loans and siding replacement grants to eligible low-to-moderate income households throughout O’Fallon.

• Senior transportation and assistance through Aging Ahead, which operates out of O’Fallon’s Senior Center.

• Emergency Homeless Prevention assistance for eligible public service agencies to support O’Fallon residents with rent/ mortgage/utility assistance.

• The Disabled Transportation Assistance Program which provides rides to medical and essential living appointments for residents with disabilities.

• ADA Public Facility Assistance Program funding for the removal of material and/or architectural barriers that restrict the mobility or accessibility of elderly or persons with disabilities to public facilities.

• Program Administration providing towards the salary, benefits and training of the CDBG program administrator as well as necessary administrative costs to effectively administer the program.

It is being called a milestone in the history of the organization.

The St. Charles County Ambulance District’s new headquarters debuted last month.

The new facility will provide a plethora of benefits that will in turn help provide better service to the citizens of the county, among them; expanded training capacity, improved simulation labs, an enhanced emergency operations center, and comprehensive fleet maintenance.

The new building consolidates operations from five existing SCCAD facilities – administration, training, and finance/human resources buildings in St. Peters, a logistics and fleet maintenance facility in Cottleville and a non-emergency transfer hub in O’Fallon.

SCCAD Chief Kelly Cope said that a common misconception is, the emergency vehicles will also call the new location home.

“We will still have 19 emergency units available 24-hoursa-day at 16 different locations throughout the county,” Cope said.

The new training space can house over 200 individuals in a single room when fully utilized, enabling SCCAD to host a variety of training opportunities for first responders in the region.

“One of the things that I am most excited about is the immense potential that the training center will have,” Kyle Gaines, SCCAD Director of Community Relations, said.

“We will be able to attract some national-level speakers.”

The facility measures over 140,000-square-feet with half set aside for operational needs and non-emergency transfer division. The new building more than doubles the district’s in-house fleet maintenance capabilities and the expansive garage allows for large spec such as the AmbuBus and

Major Incident Response Vehicle to be housed indoors and out of the freezing temperatures and conditions that the Midwest can O’Fallon’s LCS Construction took the lead on general contracting efforts for the building, which was designed

by ArchImages. Navigate Building Solutions provided construction management services. Plenty of other local trades professionals played an active role in bringing the facility online.

Design discussions began in mid-2018, with construction commencing in January 2020.

The facility’s completion is approximately two months ahead of schedule and came in nearly $2 million below the budgeted $32.8 million.

The consolidated headquarters is the largest project in the district’s capital improvement plan, which was financed by voters’ who approved of 2018’s

Proposition Ambulance – a general obligation bond issue.

The proposition also includes construction of EMS stations in areas of growth, purchase of ambulances and other response vehicles, and procurement of lifesaving medical equipment.

According to Cope, when planning every detail throughout the design and construction process, they considered the needs of the district not only today, but also decades into the future. In 2019, SCCAD received around 45,000 requests for service. As the county continues to grow at a steady rate, officials predict that the number could increase to 55-or-70,000 requests annually.

“We are going to be prepared for the next chapter, however it may present itself,” Cope said.

“We think we are pretty good now but now we have the efficiency to be even better.”

Francis Howell High graduate awarded 2021 college scholarship from SITE Improvement Association The SITE Improvement Association has awarded a $2,500 scholarship to Cheyenne Burt, a graduate of Francis Howell High School, to attend Lindenwood University this fall and study biological sciences. Her scholarship is sponsored by Karrenbrock Construction, Inc. Cheyenne is one of six deserving St. Louis area students with a parent employed by one of the 220 SITE member

companies to receive the scholarships this year. The scholarships are based on student academic achievements, involvement in the community and financial need.

SITE scholarships are made possible through voluntary contributions from SITE member companies and from the SITE Advancement Foundation.

Holt students selected as finalists for Genius Olympiad

Four Holt High School students have been selected as finalists for the 2021 Genius Olympiad. Science research projects composed by Amelia Truong, Ethan Dunsworth, LaNita DeVine and Hannah Christ are now in the running to earn a variety of awards, medals, and scholarships at the Genius Olympiad Award Ceremony, which will take place virtually on June 12.

“I have talked about these amazing students all year,” shared Holt High School Science Department Chair Jennifer Hess. “They are each poised to move into science careers that will help humanity and I consider myself lucky to have worked with them.”

The Genius Olympiad is an international competition for high school students which promotes an understanding of environmental issues and the achievement of sustainability through basic science, arts, creative writing, engineering, design and business development. Participation in Genius Olympiad challenges enable students around the world to cope with environmental problems, and elicit their abilities to produce solutions that contribute to the improvement of the environment.

St. Charles AAUW announces 27th annual STEM awards St. Charles AAUW (American Association of University Women) has awarded honors to senior women in area high schools for math and science excellence since 1994. The acronym STEM was used generally around the early 1990s and was adopted by the National Science Foundation in 2001. All areas of study at school are important, but recognition in STEM areas for female students was created as a special award by the St. Charles Branch AAUW in the early 1990s.

St. Charles County Highway Department hosts virtual open house for Lake Saint Louis Boulevard Extension Project The St. Charles County Highway Department is hosting an informational virtual open house on the Lake Saint Louis Boulevard Extension Project July 14-28. Residents may view plans and submit questions and comments online at sccmo.org/LSLExtensionProject.

The Highway Department is working in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Transportation to extend Lake Saint Louis Boulevard south to improve traffic flow in the area and access to Route DD. Proposed improvements include: •

Extension of Lake Saint Louis Boulevard to Route DD and Diehr Road.

• Modification of the intersection at Route DD and Diehr Road, including tying in the proposed Lake Saint Louis Boulevard extension with either a roundabout or an updated “T” intersection.

• A bridge to cross the floodway south of the Preston Woods subdivision approximately 1,000 feet north of Diehr Road.

• An ADA-compliant concrete sidewalk on the west side of Lake Saint Louis Boulevard and a concrete shared use path on the east side of the roadway.

The project is in the conceptual design stage. After the informational virtual open house, the design may be altered, and an intersection improvement at Route DD will be selected based on public feedback. Easement and right-of-way acquisition/negotiation is expected to begin late in 2021. Construction funds are not currently allocated for the project.

WSD student selected to attend American Legion Boys Nation Kamden Hill, rising senior at Timberland High School, has been selected to attend the American Legion Boys Nation. The American Legion Boys Nation is a week-long, hands-on experience where young leaders receive an education on the structure and function of federal government.

Hill was one of eight students from the WSD selected to attend the American Legion Boys State of Missouri, held earlier this month, where nearly 550 of Missouri’s brightest high school students worked together to create a democratic government. At Boys State, he was elected to the Missouri Boys State Senate, and elected President Pro Tempore, presiding over floor meetings of the Senate. Towards the conclusion of the program, Hill was one of two citizens selected to attend Boys Nation.

“I had an absolute blast at Boys State, and I was blessed with much success,” shared Hill. “I am elated to have this amazing opportunity, and look forward to making connections with elected officials and meeting teens from across the nation who share my passion for government and politics.”

At Timberland High School, Hill is ranked in the top 10% of his class, and carries a GPA of 4.5. He was elected as Student Council President and the Student Body President for the 20212022 school year, and is a member of Youth and Government, serving as the elected Speaker of the House. Hill is a member of National Honor Society and the Black Student Union, previously serving as its vice president, and is a track and field athlete.

On Capitol Hill, Boys Nation senators meet with elected officials from their home states. Since its beginning in 1946, Boys Nation has seen many of its graduates elected to public offices, including the Presidency of the United States, the United States Congress, as state governors and as state legislators. The 75th session of Boys Nation is scheduled to be held in Washington, D.C., July 23-31, 2021.

National recognition for the 2019-20 edition of Timberland’s “Wolf Tracks” yearbook included a first place finish in the American Scholastic Press Association Yearbook contest, and earning Perfect Performance, Meeting all Deadlines

For the third consecutive year, the student-run news website of Liberty High, LHS Today, was named a Distinguished Site by School Newspapers Online (SNO). Liberty was one of seven Missouri high schools to receive the honor this year. To achieve Distinguished Site status, student publication programs had to earn all of the following badges: Audience Engagement, Multimedia, Story Page Excellence, Continuous Coverage and Site Excellence.

Lindenwood lacrosse player earns honors Lindenwood University and the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) have announced Eric McGuire as the GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s lacrosse for the 2020-21 season.

The award is based upon athletic accomplishments, both team and individual, and academic performance in the season upon which the award is based. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average that meets Academic All-America standards (3.30), and freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award.

Each member institution’s Faculty Athletics Representative completes the voting.

McGuire, an attacker for the women’s lacrosse squad, becomes the first female to take home the award for the Lions, and the second student-athlete overall.

A Westminster, Maryland native, McGuire secured numerous achievements on the field to pair with her academic honors. She was a first-team All-Region selection this season, the team-leader in goals (45), assists (50), points (95), and was tied for the lead in shots with 89.

The first-team All-GLVC selection was instrumental in helping lead Lindenwood to an NCAA Division II National Championship during the season.

In the classroom, McGuire accumulated GLVC Academic All-Conference accolades, her second-straight season doing so. *Great accomplishment Hoots clinch playoff spot The O’Fallon Hoots are members of the Prospect Baseball League, playing in the West-Prairie Land division and began play in O’Fallon at their home field CarShield in May 2020 after relocating from Hannibal, Missouri following the 2019 season.

The O’Fallon team in their first season in the Prospect League, clinched a playoff berth Wednesday night by virtue of beating the Cape Catfish and winning the first-half title in their division.

In the contest, Brett Johnson continued his hitting rage getting two hits in four attempts.

Catcher Elias Stevens picked up two runs-batted-in with a double in the third inning to give the Hoots a lead early.

Bryce Wear pitched six innings allowing only three hits and one earned run and not walking any batter.

Reliever Masen Palmie picked up his fifth save out of six games.

The Hoots and Catfish both ended the first half with an 18-12 record, but O’Fallon owned the head-to-head tiebreaker over Cape.

O’Fallon will host the Prairie Land Division Championship game at the end of the regular season against the division’s second-half winner.

The second half began July 1.

Ingredients: • 2 thinly sliced chicken breasts • 1/2 package cream cheese, softened • 1/4 cup Greek yogurt • 1 tablespoon finely chopped shallot • 1 lemon, zest only • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 1 can (10.7 ounces) mandarin oranges, drained, juice reserved • 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus additional, to taste, divided • 20 turns fresh cracked pepper, plus additional, to taste, divided • water • 1/2 pound macaroni • 1 A pple, diced

Directions: • Allow chicken breasts to sit at room temperature 20 minutes.

• Mash softened cream cheese, Greek yogurt, chopped shallot, lemon zest, lemon juice, 3 tablespoons reserved mandarin juice, chopped parsley, salt and pepper. Set aside.

• Preheat grill or saute pan to high heat. Season chicken breasts with drizzle of olive oil, salt and pepper, to taste.

• Grill chicken breasts until internal temperature reaches 165 F. If using saute pan, cook 2 minutes on each side then finish in 400 F oven 5-10 minutes. Allow chicken to cool then dice into small chunks.

• Bring medium or large pot of salted water to boil. Add macaroni and cook until tender. Drain and pour hot noodles into large mixing bowl.

• Gently stir in cream cheese mixture until noodles are well coated. Let cool slightly.

• Add diced chicken, apples and mandarin oranges; stir to combine. Serve warm or chill in refrigerator to serve cold.

Ed Harris played Gene Kranz, the flight director who coordinated an effort to get the crew back home. Even though I know how it ends, I always watch to make sure to watch to the end.

Everyone has their list of “Must Watch” films and “Galaxy Quest” is one of my favorites. Hopefully, the TV adaptation will make it broadcast TV or streaming services sometime in the next year.

Shopping is a great stress reliever for me. If I ever need to decompress I just grab a friend (her name’s VISA) and we go out on the town and soon feel lots better.

On the way we picked up my annoying Aunt Fiona. She had asked me to go out to lunch with her the week before, but I made up a lame excuse about having to water the lawn. She quickly reminded me that I had an automatic sprinkling system. Darn her photographic memory! I was forced to repent and reschedule.

We soon stopped at one of my favorite stores along the way. It’s an outlet and carries all kinds of interesting one-of-a-kinds. If you find something you better grab it because it won’t be there the following day.

We split up then met later. Fiona was having a great time, better than me apparently. Her shopping basket was half full while I could still see the bottom of mine.

“What’s the matter dear?” she asked. “Not having much luck?”

“Hmph,” I muttered. “I’ve got my eye on a few things.”

She was always trying to one up me on something.

We rounded the corner when something caught our attention mid-shelf—an adorable bag. We both grabbed onto it at the same time. I smiled so she could see I was clearly the better person, but tightened my grip just the same. She grinned as well, but clenched her teeth and gave the object of

our desire a forcible tug.

Hmm, the old girl was going to play tough, huh?

Well I wasn’t about to release my grasp either since her cart was half full and I deserved the item much more than she did.

I saw that her will was strengthening as well as her hold. I had to think fast. I gave the object a wicked twist; her poor arthritic hands could not withstand such a maneuver. I won the battle and

came home the victor.

My husband spied my purchase and examined it closely then chortled, “What in the name of all that’s ridiculous do you need a cat-carrying bag for?”

I pretended I knew exactly what it was.

“Oh calm down. Aunt Fiona’s birthday’s next week.”

I guess she’d won after all.
