A winter tradition in historic St. Charles The Festival of Ice, or Fête de Glacé, will celebrate its 16th anniversary when professional ice carvers converge on North Main Street in historic St. Charles at 9am on Saturday, January 25. The Fête de Glacé is a rain shine or snow, outdoor event that allows the public to watch professional ice carvers bring their art to life in a competition using chain saws, power grinders, sanders, chisels, hand saws, hot irons and cold spray. The Festival begins at 9am on Saturday, Jan. 25 and is free and open to the public. Stretching between the 100 and 200 blocks of North Main Street, the festival is a relaxing way to spend a few hours with your family in the early days of 2014. “It’s a family oriented winter party,” said Fête de Glacé Chairwoman, Ann Walters. The Monster Carvers competition is set to take place in the morning from 9:30am-noon. This team battle between man and ice challenges two-person carving teams to use their skills to shape five 260-pound blocks of ice into one monster carving. Last year’s winners in the Monster Carvers class wooed the crowd with their entry, Castle Fight. The afternoon Master Carvers segment begins after a brief break and runs from about 12:30-3:30pm. In this individual
competition, each artist must craft a smaller, but often more delicate and intricate sculpture from a single block of ice. Last year, Jonathan Russell took first place honors with his Princess sculpture. The Festival’s artistic competition has a unique component in that it is judged and juried by the crowd. The event attendees have the final say as to the winners of both the individual and team competitions. Ballots may be picked up at the information booth located at the center of the festival. Adults and children may vote as many times as they like for their favorite sculptures. The People’s Choice Awards are presented at about 4pm. With temperatures hovering around 25 degrees during last year’s event, North Main Street still saw over 4,000 ice gazers. Many of these attendees enjoyed ducking into one of the warm restaurants lining Main Street after the event. Foot traffic is good for business, and according to Walters, “The family-friendly event comes at a time when Main Street needs the business.” For more information on the event, please visit www.historicstcharles.com.
