Nominate an Outstanding Volunteer from our Region

Discovery Church to Host Emergency Response Training

Now through February 8, the United Way is accepting nominations for the United Way Volunteer Center Honors: Volunteer Awards. Individuals, groups, businesses, schools or churches that volunteer in United Way’s service region that demonstrated outstanding service in 2012 are eligible to be nominated for one of the awards. Whether it’s serving as a mentor, bringing meals to the homes of seniors, or helping out a neighbor, United Way of Greater St. Louis wants to honor stories of service from across the region.

The Awards event will be held on April 3.

Ranking 10th in the nation for volunteering, St. Louis has thousands of outstanding volunteers throughout the region. United Way believes those volunteers deserve to be honored in the community. Discovery Church is hosting the Mid America TEEN CERT program to teach a Teen Community Emergency Response Team course to assist local emergency services and the communities of St. Charles County and surrounding areas in case of an emergency or a disaster.

Adults shouldn’t be discouraged by the word “Teen” in the program’s name; it simply means that whereas most “adult” CERT programs teach only to adults 18 years and older, Mid America trains both youth and adults.

The training is being offered free of charge to anyone 12 years and older, including adults, and will be held at Discovery Church, located on 8134 Mexico Road in St. Peters, MO, over two weekends March 8, 9 and March 15, 16.

Residents of the community and business owners have expressed concerns about real and perceived issues with fire and police response times in the event of an actual emergency or disaster.

Joining a CERT or TEEN CERT program is a great opportunity to go from talk to action and to become part of the solution.

Friday, March 8 – “Disaster Preparedness” prepares you for the emergency situation.

Saturday, March 9 – “Disaster Medical Operations 1”, teaches triage and treating life-threatening injuries, and “Disaster Medical Operations 2”, deals with assessment, treatment and hygiene. “Light Search and Rescue”, students will learn the fundamentals of operations and size up.

Friday, March 15 – “Fire Safety”, gives you the fundamentals to survive in the event there is a fire.

Saturday, March 16 – “Disaster Psychology / Special Needs Considerations”, trainees will learn how to care both physically and mentally for themselves, people with special needs, their friends and the victims in a disaster situation. “Terrorism and CERT”, students will deal with what terrorism is and what to do to help themselves and their country. “CERT Organization”, deals with organizing and deploying team members safely and efficiently. The training concludes with a final exercise, which is a hands-on practical simulation to demonstrate the comprehensive skills taught during the course.

Paper Artwork at The Foundry Art Centre

PaperWork In, On, and Of Paper VI is a juried art exhibition featuring two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks that use paper as the main component of expression. The exhibition runs Friday, February 8 – Friday, March 22 and is free to the public and open for viewing during regular FAC hours. St. Louis paper artist Betty Shew has selected an excellent collection of paper pieces for PaperWork VI and the exhibition’s award winners will be announced at the opening reception. The opening reception is Friday, February 8 from 6-8pm. The public can enjoy free food & drink along with artful conversation and observation. Help Improve MDC Website Enjoy hunting, fishing or just being outdoors? Own land and manage it for wildlife? If you answered yes to any of these questions, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) needs your help to improve its website, mdc.mo.gov.

The Conservation Department is redesigning its website to better meet user needs and interests, and needs volunteers to help test the new site and provide suggestions. To participate, complete the registration form at http://mdc.mo.gov/node/20485.

Throughout the next year, volunteers may be contacted by MDC to participate in an online survey, help group similar topics by subject, or test portions of the new site.

Students: Free Access to Public Ice Skating Would you like to be able to glide across the ice with ease? The St. Peters Rec-Plex can help you or your child learn how to ice skate and improve your ice skating. Plenty of spots are still open for ice skating classes in the upcoming semester starting Tuesday, February 19.

The Rec-Plex offers 6-week and 7-week sessions this semester. Tuesday evening and Saturday classes are available. Classes are open to children as young as 3 years up to adults. All classes are 30 minutes long, and the Rec-Plex provides ice skates for students who need them.

As a bonus, students in a number of Rec-Plex ice skating classes receive free admission to RecPlex public ice skating sessions for the duration of their registered course. These classes include beginning and intermediate learn-to-skate class-

es. Check the Rec-Plex Front Desk for eligible classes. Receipts must be shown to the Front Desk for admission. All Snowball and Tot level students (ages 3-5) also receive free skate rental and admission for one guardian. Receipts must be shown to the skate guard for free skate rental.

Rec-Plex instructors teach skills developed by the Ice Skating Institute (ISI), a leading national ice industry association. Students also have the opportunity to perform during Rec-Plex ice shows. The fee for 6-week classes is $62 for RecPlex passholders and $72 for the general public.

The fee for 7-week classes is $73 for Rec-Plex passholders and $83 for the general public.

Ambulance District Kicks off Pancakes with Paramedics Program Martin Limpert, a spokesman for the ambulance district, stated last summer, “Our paramedics and support staff had an absolute blast offering our ICE Cream Social program to residents at retirement communities throughout St. Charles County. Paramedics hosted a total of 23 events, reaching over 700 individuals.

The success of the ICE (In Case of Emergen- Paramedic Lisa Cassidy serves pancakes to retired firecy) initiative got our fighter Charlie Butts. employees thinking about other ways they could engage socially with older residents while providing helpful health and safety related information.

This resulted in the “Pancakes with Paramedics” Program which kicked off at Park Place Senior Living in O’Fallon. Over 60 residents were treated to a pancake breakfast prepared and served by off-duty paramedics. Paramedics had a chance to sit down with residents and talk about various safety issues. Limpert added that, so far, 16 facilities have signed up for the program which runs from January 23 - March 31. O’Fallon’s Great Backyard Bird Count

Can you come out and help count the birds? Join in O’Fallon’s Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), which will be held on Saturday, February 9, in scenic Fort Zumwalt Park, 1000 Jessup Drive, O’Fallon. Anyone can participate, including beginning bird watchers, families and experts. Bring binoculars, if possible. There’s no cost for parking.

The count will take place at various times between 8 and 11 a.m.

With the help of a list of birds, participants will observe and record sightings for at least 15 minutes but no more than an hour, then warm up in the historic Heald Home. The cost of $2 includes a tour of the home, which is hosting an exhibit of photographs of Missouri birds taken by members of the O’Fallon Photo Club and photographer Ferman Carrillo.

O’Fallon’s Free Bulk Waste Drop-Off O’Fallon residents are invited to take advantage of the City’s free, bi-monthly drop-off service for many items that are too large to fit into curbside trash containers. The first drop-off of the year will be held 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 16. Acceptable items can be brought to O’Fallon’s waste transfer station, 1572 Progress West Lane, O’Fallon. Additional drop-off dates will be held on Saturdays, only, from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. on April 20, June 15, August 17, October 19 and December 21.

For a complete list of non-acceptable and acceptable bulk waste items that can be taken to the drop-off, visit http://www.ofallon.mo.us/bulk-waste. A partial listing includes: Acceptable bulk waste for drop-off: furniture, carpets, swing sets, bikes, toddler pools, sports and exercise equipment, large hand tools, barbecue grills, fluorescent tubes, computer monitors and televisions. Lawn mowers, except riding mowers, also are accepted, but gas and oil tanks must be empty.

Unacceptable items: yard waste, appliances, tires, auto parts, batteries, gas, oil, transmission fluid, and liquid household hazardous waste: paint, solvents, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and their containers. To dispose of unacceptable items, please contact St. Charles County Recycle Works at 636.949.7415.

O’Fallon residents must have a current photo ID with their O’Fallon address. Only one load per household will be accepted per day, and only cars, pickup trucks, and small trailers no more than 10 feet long will be allowed. Residents also must unload their own items.

Curbside collection for many large items is available by calling Environmental Services at 636272-0477, or contacting staff by e-mail, ofallonrecycles@ofallon.mo.us. Cost of the service is $20 per truck hopper for curbside collection.

Directions to O’Fallon’s waste transfer station: Take the North Service Road to Hoff Road (9/10 of a mile west of the Bryan Road junction). Turn north on Hoff Road, cross the railroad tracks and bear left (west). Continue on Hoff Road for about three blocks, and turn left on Progress West; continue to the transfer station.

PALS Valentine’s Day Bake Sale PALS (Pets A-Lone Animal Sanctuary) will be having a Valentine’s Day Bake sale on Sunday, February 10 at Kroger from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is an opportunity to get some wonderful baked goods and help PALS continue to provide shelter and care for the stray and abandoned animals in Lincoln County.

PALS is an all-volunteer, non-profit animal rescue organization and certified charity licensed by the State of Missouri. Volunteers are always needed to assist with animal care, shelter maintenance, adoption and fundraising events, fostering and publicity. Donations are always needed and welcome. TMS Adds Archery to Curriculum Perhaps because of characters like Katniss in the film The Hunger Games and Merida in Disney Pixar’s Brave, archery has become the hottest new trend in kids’ sports. Even local schools are capitalizing on the growing popularity of archery. Troy Middle School will add the archery unit to existing Physical Education (PE) curriculum beginning in the spring of 2013.

The school district has partnered with National Archery in Schools (NASP) program to provide archery as an alternative sport to more traditional activities currently offered in school. TMS sixth grade PE teachers have received training and certification as archery instructors through NASP. There are plans to expand the archery curriculum into the high school.

The curriculum provided by NASP will ensure a consistent and safe foundation to archery fundamentals instruction in classrooms.

By partnering with NASP, schools are provided discount prices on all archery equipment needed for classroom use. The program may inspire other avenues for student recreation and competition. Missouri currently has regional and state competitions on an annual basis.

Donald Thompson Jr. and members of Donald Thompson Family Foundation gave a generous donation to the Lincoln County R-III Archery in Schools program. Start-up costs for each school building is around $3000. The donation will assist in purchasing Mathews compound bows, targets and arrows for the program.

Bird Talk, Winter Walk at Cuivre River State Park Cuivre River State Park is hosting a class and hike for bird watchers. Park Naturalist Bruce Schuette will conduct an evening class on Wednesday, February 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Cuivre River Sate Park Visitor’s Center.

On Saturday, February 16, a morning hike will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 10 a.m. Hikers will be led through bird identification as they tour a portion of the park. Hikers should meet at the Visitors Center parking lot at 7:45 a.m. and bring their binoculars and cameras. In the event of inclement weather, the hike will be cancelled or rescheduled.

These events are free. However, space is limited. Please contact the Visitor Center at 636.528.7247 for registration, updates and other information. The Cuivre River State Park Visitor’s Center also has a Facebook page.

Health Department Offering Certified Food Handlers Classes There are two Safe Food Handling Certification Classes remaining for spring, 2013. The Lincoln County Health Department will hold classes on Wednesday, February 20 and Thursday, March 21.

Because of a Food Ordinance adopted in October, 2011, there are new requirements for temporary events held in Lincoln County. This course will cover these changes as well as focus on proper food preparation, personal hygiene, sanitation procedures, and permit requirements. All participants will be assessed at the end of the class for certification in safe food handling.

Class will be held in the Community Room at the South Entrance of the Health Department, located at #5 Health Department Drive in Troy. Registration will begin at 6 p.m., and class will commence promptly at 6:15 p.m. All students will receive a packet of information and some items needed for safe food preparation. Troy R-III District Completes Boundary Process The Boundary Committee of the Lincoln County R-III School District concluded their process

and arrived at a plan to recommend boundaries to the Board of Education this month. Based on a survey held during the public forum, Map Concept 4A was favored by the majority of participants.

Boundary Committee members, made up of more than 40 parents and community members, did make a few slight alterations to Map Concept 4A based on community survey and transportation considerations by the R-III District. These changes affect Bluffview Estates, Aubuchon Road and a small area north of Highway 47 and West of the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.

The draft of the Boundary Committee’s recommendation is now available for viewing at www. troy.k12.mo.us.

The committee will present their recommendation. The Board of Education will hear the recommendation at the February meeting and vote in March.

At that time, final boundaries will be published and parents will be notified.

Boundary changes will be in effect for the 2013-14 school year.

Printed copies will be available at the pre-kindergarten school, elementary schools and middle school in the coming weeks.

City Releases Interim City Administrator Early Now that Wentzville’s board of aldermen have given final approval to a contract for a permanent city administrator, city officials have decided to release interim city administrator George Kolb from his contract on February 15, two weeks before the new city administrator takes over Wentzville’s top administrative position. Wentzville’s new city administrator, T. Michael McDowell, will assume his duties on Monday, March 4.

Kolb came to Wentzville in early September 2012 through a contract the city signed with Interim Public Management, LLC (IPM).

When the city signed its contract with IPM, Wentzville had been without a permanent city administrator for about a year, and the city’s director of finance, Dennis Walsh, had been handling the city administrator duties in addition to his own duties.

Under the city’s agreement with IPM, Kolb was considered a consultant for the city through IPM, and the city paid IPM $3,100 per week for Kolb’s services. In addition, the city paid Kolb’s business-related expenses, provided him a vehicle for city-business use, and provided him lodging expenses. By releasing Kolb two weeks before McDowell takes over as city administrator, the city will save over six thousand dollars in consulting fees alone.

though city officials were happy with the job Kolb has done as interim city administrator, the cost-savings for the city was the deciding factor for the early contract release. “We think George has done a tremendous job while he was here, and he gave the city excellent service,” said Guccione. “We appreciate him and wish him all the best. We just see this as a way we can save several thousand dollars of the taxpayers’ money.”

Kolb said he also looks back on his months with the city with satisfaction. “I’ve enjoyed my association with Wentzville,” said Kolb, “and wish the staff, the mayor, the board of aldermen and the new city administrator good luck and good fortune in their endeavors.”

Although on Friday, February 15 the city will end its agreement with IPM for Kolb’s services, the city will still be under an agreement with IPM for the city’s interim director of finance, Petree Powell. Powell assumed the duties of interim director of finance on January 10, after the city’s former director of finance, Dennis Walsh, retired at the end of December 2012. The city pays IPM $2,850 per week for Powell’s services, plus pays her business-related expenses.

Honoring Tomorrow’s Tech Leaders The Annual STEM Recognition Breakfast to honor 16 local high school students excelling in science, technology, engineering and math, will be held at 7:30 a.m. Friday, March 8 at Old Hickory Golf Club, #1 Dye Club Road, St. Peters.

The event is hosted by the Partners for Progress of Greater St. Charles (PfP), a civic group founded in 2001 to influence community progress so people, businesses and institutions flourish.

STEM is a national and regional effort to better prepare the workforce of tomorrow by encouraging today’s students to engage more in studies, events, and careers involving science, technology, engineering and math.

Public and private high schools in St. Charles County have until Jan. 31 to nominate students for this year’s recognition awards based on their STEM participation as well as their college and career plans.

SCC Enrolling for Late-Start With the spring 2013 semester at St. Charles Community College under way, students still interested in enrolling may register for spring “latestart” and “second eight-week” classes. These classes begin later in the semester.

Students may choose from general education classes like Art Appreciation, American Government and U.S. History. Some Intermediate Algebra classes are also available, as well as fitness classes like Yoga and Pilates.

Oscar Watch 2013: “Django Unchained” legendary encyclopedic knowledge of film serves him well in this story of revenge and redemption.

As he did three years ago in Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds, Christoph Waltz turns in a carefully nuanced performance as Dr. King Schultz. The retired dentist speaks slowly and deliberately, making his enemies think he isn’t a threat until the moment he puts a bullet—or twenty—in them.

Though passed over for an Oscar this time, Jamie Foxx is the perfect complement to Waltz. Django— pronounced “Jango”—is a complicated man with a single-minded purpose. The role calls for Foxx to wear a variety of costumes, including an outrageous ensemble with cuffs and ruffles.

Leonardo DiCaprio also deserves mention for playing Calvin Candie. With his goatee and cigarette holder, Candie becomes the stereotypical plantation owner.

Candie enjoys a battle of wits as much as King Schultz, which makes their conversations and confrontations fun to watch.

Former video store clerk Quentin Tarantino built his reputation on movies that pay homage to the great films of yesteryear. Django Unchained, his Oscar-nominated tribute to 1960’s westerns, is a long, violent, but thoroughly engrossing adventure.

Under Tarantino’s direction, Christoph Waltz is on the fast track for another Academy Award for his portrayal of Dr. King Schultz. A dentist-turned-bounty hunter, Schultz tracks fugitives all across the West. Enlisting the help of a slave named Django (Jamie Foxx), the bounty hunter becomes more productive than ever before.

Django agrees to a partnership with the good doctor if he, in turn, will help the freed slave find his missing wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington). Notorious plantation owner Monsieur Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) covets the young woman for her looks and ability to converse in German, however.

chained contains more than a fair amount of blood and violence. In the director’s vision of the Old West, heads explode like overripe melons during a gunfight. In many ways, this can be considered Tarantino’s most violent film to date.

In the running for a Best Picture Oscar, Django Unchained must slip past the highly patriotic Argo. Ben Affleck and his tale of the Iranian Hostage Crisis have been taking home the big prizes this year, but if anyone can top Affleck it will be Django.

Django Unchained, rated R for strong graphic violence throughout, a vicious fight, language, and some nudity, currently is playing in theaters.

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

Gary Baute Lindenwood Lions Basketball Pulls Upset Over Central Missouri ***Men Hit the Hardwood The Lindenwood men’s basketball team pulled an upset over the conference leaders on Saturday, February 2 as it beat the Central Missouri Mules 83-82 on the ‘Sellout for Sterling’ afternoon at Hyland Arena. Over 3,000 people showed up for the event.

With just under four seconds remaining in the game and down by one, senior Richie Thompson got fouled after trying to go coast to coast to keep Lindenwood in the contest. Thompson knocked down both free throws and Lindenwood held on after a last-second three-pointer by Central Missouri failed to find the basket.

Cody Sorenson and Brett Thompson led the Lions with 14 points while Aaron Ramirez scored a career-high 12 points. Lindenwood improves to 14-5 overall and 7-4 in conference play. The Ravens however showed their dominance as they led the first half with a commanding 21-6 lead.

Then something strange happened. Right after half time when the Ravens ran back the opening kickoff 108-yards for a touchdown, half the lights at the New Orleans facility went out. After 34-minute delay, the 49ers seemed to be revived and went on a scoring spree to make the game very interesting.

All said and done, the Ravens defense proved to be to dominate as they stopped a late surge by their opponent to hold on to a 34-31 win. Gotta love Henry Alfred Grummorson — the boy-knight turns 6 and launches a quest that would best any knight of the round table. You’ll meet the hero in “King Arthur’s Very Great Grandson,” written and illustrated by Kenneth Kraegel, who’s making his fairy tale come true with this princely pick.

Clad in armor and wielding a mighty sword, Henry swings by the resident dragon’s liar astride Knuckles, his dutiful donkey. When he arrives at the monster’s hideaway, Henry’s in for a shock. The dragon is as gentle as a kitty cat. Instead of breathing fire, he blows perfectly executed smoke rings.

Bummer. It’s adventure Henry wants, not tricks from a docile dragon.

The boy states his desire, and the dragon urges him to “try the Cyclops . . . ” Henry ventures on but too soon learns that ol’ one-eye doesn’t set his sights on knocking knee-high knights into kingdom come either. Neither do the other monsters Henry meets. In the end, the boy fails to rack up any battle wins but he does win the friendship of some unique buddies.

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Place baking cups into standard muffin pan from the Two-Tone Cupcake Pan kit.

2. Prepare white cake mix following package instructions. Remove about 1-1/2 cups batter from bowl; divide into 2 smaller bowls. Tint one smaller bowl of batter red, the other rose.

3. Place cupcake insert into first row of baking cups; fill center 2/3 full with red or rose batter. Fill remaining cup 2/3 full with

4. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until cake tester or toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool cupcakes in pan on cooling grid 5 minutes. Remove from pan; cool completely. Repeat with remaining batter.

5. Tint portions of icing red and rose; reserve some white. Pipe tip 1M or tip 12 icing swirl onto cooled cupcakes. Add sprinkles or sugars.

Makes about 24 sandwich cookies and butter in 1-quart microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on HIGH 1-2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until chocolate is melted. Stir in orange liqueur and orange zest. Refrigerate 30-35 minutes until thickened.

Place cookie top over filling pressing down gently. Repeat with remaining filling and cookies.

Filling: - 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream - 6 squares bittersweet chocolate (1 ounce each) - 1 tablespoon butter - 1 tablespoon orange-flavored liqueur - 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375ºF. In large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar using electric mixer. Add egg yolks; mix and add in flours and extract.

Politically Correct: a.k.a Illusions Joe grieves for the good old days; do you?

I sometimes long for the days before Political Correctness spoiled all my illusions. I suppose mine might be a bit male chauvinistic but can I help it if I’m from the Father Knows Best era?

Those were the days when student troublemakers were sent to reform school and athletes didn’t use steroids. Stan Musial was my boyhood hero. (R.I.P. Stan.

You’re missed).

I remember a class trip to “Lambert Field” a.k.a.

“Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.” We could stand outside on an overlook attached to the terminal and watch DC-6’s take off and land. There was an arcade with all the latest games and gizmos and shoeshine boys that could raise a mirror shine on my scuffed wing tips. “Shoeshine Boys” is now a politically incorrect term if I understand correctly. “Shoe Polishing Engineers?”

We boys leered at the stewardesses on their way to various flights. They were gorgeous. “Stewardess” later became politically incorrect. They’re now called “Flight Attendants.” They include male versions as well, not to mention one older woman I saw on a flight who reminded me of Sergeant Snorkel. The High and

the Mighty, one of my favorite John Wayne films, had stewardesses. They were young, gorgeous, compassionate, and heroic. On my last commuter flight, the flight attendants were overworked, middle-aged and grouchy. I wondered if this happened after “Personnel Departments” became “Human Resources,” a term that sounds like it was invented by slave traders.

The air terminal of that era was modern, clean and exciting. The last time I was there, security had set in like a disease. It was about as charming as a prison. Nobody smiled or made eye contact. Employees looked as if someone put ground glass in their espresso.

Secretaries are now called “Executive Assistants.” I once held the illusion they were always beautiful, efficient females before they refused to get coffee for the bosses. Oh well.

Neither would my ex-wife a.k.a. “Significant Other.” I’m unsure if this is political correctness, but at least the bosses get more exercise. Me too.

Hospitals now have “Male Nurses” (and they‘re often referred to as such) yet female nurses are called “Nurses.” What part of politically correct is that?

Perhaps my boyhood family doctor was politically incorrect. He stopped

by our house on his way home to check on me when I had pneumonia and administer the latest drug called Penicillin a.k.a. “Mold Fungus.” There is little chance my current doctor would stop by to see me unless I was a clubhouse bartender at Bogey Hills.

Political correctness is a deep mystery begun by even more mysterious mountaintop gurus. We mere mortals are doomed to obey these strange laws without question. I’m unsure if enforcement is by a large truncheon-wielding cop or an attorney in a three-piece suit with a writ. Perhaps I’ll yell, “Swine Flu” in a hospital and find out. It’s now called “Influenza” so as not to annoy the pork industry wallahs...not to be confused with the “Pork Barrel Industry” (as in Congress).

When I rode motorcycles, a lady called me a “Biker.”

“Whoa,” I teased. “I’m not a biker. I don’t have tattoos, and I don’t belong to a gang. I’m a motorcycle rider.”

She said, “That’s ridiculous. If you ride motorcycles, you’re a biker.” I said, “Okay. If you say so.” I pointed at her Chevy Tahoe and asked, “Are you an SUV’er?”

If I‘m correct, her reply was politically incorrect, but sometimes I’m merely wrong. There’s never a guru around when you really need one.
