College Meadows Park to become St. Charles County’s 11th regional park By Brett Auten Sure she may be a bit biased, but Nancy Gomer pretty much nails it when she said, “What’s not to like about a park?” In a pairing that seems hand in glove, the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department will open its 11th regional park. Located in Cottleville, College Meadows Park is 80 acres of development nuzzled up to the campus of St Charles Community College. “It’s a good fit and a great partnership,” Gomer, marketing coordinator for the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation said. “The community should be looking forward to this.” College Meadows Park is located near the west entrance of the campus at 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in Cottleville, which puts it in the heart of St. Charles County. “College Meadows Park is conveniently located and is designed to accommodate citizens of all ages and abilities,” Bettie Yahn-Kramer, St. Charles County Parks Director said. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held Monday, April 20 beginning at 4:30 p.m. After a short dedication, all are invited to explore the new fitness trail, a nine-hole disc (Frisbee) golf course, and participate in a disc throwing contest for an opportunity to win a free park cabin rental. “If you have any questions or are curious, that is the day to come on over,” Gomer said. Instructors from SCCC will be on hand to help those navigate through the fitness trail. The fitness trail encompasses 10 exercise stations and a fitness machine that is accessible for wheelchairs. The plan of attack at each station, which are
stretched apart far enough to make a nice run or walk, includes an assortment of stretches and body weight exercises. What’s sure to be the busiest stretch of land at College Meadows Park is a nine-hole disc golf course. Disc golf has become the most popular feature in the St. Charles Parks department. College Meadows will be just the third park to have a course. “It is our most requested amenity. Whether it’s freezing cold or hot as heck, people are out there enjoying the disc golf. The College Meadows Park disc golf course has concrete tee pads and professional-style Mach V Disc Golf Baskets dotting the landscape. None of this would have happened were it not for the partnership between the St. Charles County Parks Department and the St. Charles Community College. Under an agreement, St. Charles Community College owns the property and the Parks Department will manage the park through a 20-year renewable lease for up to a maximum term of 60 years. The St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department has been developing unique regional parks for 18 years. Since its inception in 1997, the department has acquired a total of 3,156 acres of land reserved for county parks. This includes the opening of 11 parks, with six reserved for future parkland. “(College Meadows Park) was pretty much done in house,” Gomer said. “From the maintenance to the park manager, it was all our manpower.” For more information about St. Charles County Parks, visit www.stccparks.org or contact the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department at 636-949-7535.
