Saint Charles Riverfront Arts (SCRA) hosts the 8th Annual Spring ArtWalk on April 26, 27, and 28.

This three-day event features juried artists housed indoors at various businesses along the northern end of Historic Main Street.

The annual Spring ArtWalk event— started in 2006 by Saint Charles Riverfront Arts—is the primary venue to support the 501 c3 organization’s mission of growing a dynamic Art District in St. Charles County. The Spring ArtWalk is “artist friendly” —there is no commission on the artists’ sales, and the art is exhibited indoors.

Two unique features of the Spring ArtWalk are the two six-week “Young Artists Workshop” and “Adult Artists Workshop” series, which began in mid-March and will conclude the week of the Spring ArtWalk event. Each of the “Artist Workshop” participants will select two to three pieces completed during the workshop sessions to be displayed in a special gallery setting during the 2013 Spring ArtWalk event.

The always popular Patron’s Preference drawing will also be back at the

2013 Spring ArtWalk. Patron’s Preference will be held on Sunday, April 28 at 3pm. A limited number of tickets will be sold for the Patron’s Preference drawing at $100 per ticket. Ticket numbers are drawn and ticket holders can choose in the order they are drawn from more than 35 donated works of art from the Spring ArtWalk participating artists (each piece is valued at $250 or more.). Each ticket holder will be able to choose a piece of art. Disaster Planning Among Area Faith-Based Organizations In a disaster, many look to their faith as a means for support. When a tornado, flood, fire, disease outbreak or other emergency impacts our community, faith organization leaders may wonder, “What Can We Do to Help?” or “What Resources Can Help Us?” To help answer those questions and to illustrate plans available to help individuals, families and entire organizations, a variety of agencies in Lincoln, St. Charles and Warren counties are teaming to present a Faith-Based Emergency Planning Workshop on May 7 at Quail Ridge Lodge (5501 Quail Ridge Parkway in Wentzville, inside St. Charles County’s Quail Ridge Park). Beginning at 9am, the workshop will help faith leaders and congregations prepare for, respond to and recover from potentially dangerous or disruptive events. shop in suburban St. Louis. An artist who has always been fascinated by found photographs, he bought them, wondering why these enigmatic family portraits were abandoned.

He began sharing the vivid and kitschy images.

The unknown couple is seen at a holiday party, on a tropical cruise, and posing on an iceberg in Alaska; photographs of each other in front of famous places.

The more images Phillips shared, the more intent he became on finding the people in the pictures. He created a page on Facebook that featured images of the woman and asked, “Is This Your Mother?” Phillips wondered, could the social media community help restore their identities, or would they be lost forever?

Lost and Found: The Search for Harry and Edna – a photography exhibition opening at Foundry Art Centre in Saint Charles, Missouri on Friday, May 17 – continues the collective story about the social media search for the identities and the St. Louis family of Harry and Edna. This unique photography show explores the intersection of photography, social media, and our places in history. Free and open to the public, the exhibition will run from May 17 to June 21, 2013.

Fiesta Friday Party for Kids

Three years ago, Panera Bread and the Panera Bread Foundation embarked on a social experiment—the Panera Cares Community Cafes. These locations are non-profit cafes of shared responsibility with no set prices, just suggested donation amounts.

Now, inspired by the success of these cafes and their ability to help people in need, elevate the discussion about food insecurity and provide a vehicle for people to help one another, the company is launching a Panera Cares menu item in all 48 metropolitan-area Saint Louis Bread Co. bakery-cafes.

The “Meal of Shared Responsibility,” as the item is called, is Turkey Chili in a Sourdough Bread Bowl. It has no set price and provides a delicious, wholesome entree, with dignity, to anyone— regardless of their means.

“When we launched our community cafe concept three years ago, skeptics thought that too many people would take advantage and too few would share in the responsibility of sustaining the effort,” said Ron Shaich, founder, chairman, and co-CEO of Panera Bread and president of the Panera Bread Foundation. “But there are now five non-profit community cafes across the country and they’re all working. They elevate the issue of food insecurity, they offer a vehicle for those with the means to help those with a need, and they help nourish their local communities. Based on their success, we feel confident in attempting this escalation of our efforts against hunger and challenging the St. Louis community to take care of each other.”

To do so, the Saint Louis Bread Co. cafes will offer three payment options for the Meal of Shared Responsibility. First, a customer may pay the suggested amount. Second, if a customer has the means, they may pay more to help cover the cost of the meal for someone who cannot afford to pay. Third, if a customer has the need, they may pay what they can.

Panera Bread decided to launch this program in St. Louis where the company has its roots, its headquarters and where the first Panera Cares community cafe opened.

For the Meal of Shared Responsibility, Panera Bread was looking for an item that was nutrient-dense, delicious and self-contained. The Turkey Chili in a Sourdough Bread Bowl met those criteria.

Panera Bread has worked to help combat the problem of hunger for 25 years, since it began donating unsold bread and baked goods to local organizations. Under its Day-End Dough-Nation™ program, Panera bakery-cafes nationally last year donated a retail value of approximately $100 million worth of unsold bread and baked goods to help neighbors in need.

It’s time to mix a little south-of-the-border fun with some Rec-Plex South fun. The St. Peters RecPlex is bringing back Fiesta Friday again after a popular first year in 2012. Kids ages 10-14 can enjoy this Cinco De Mayo-inspired lock-in event at Rec-Plex South on May 3.

Round up your amigos for Fiesta Friday and enjoy Mexican party games, a DJ, dancing, dodgeball, broomball on the ice rink, basketball with hoop shoot contests, attendance prizes and more! The party begins at 7pm and goes until 10pm.

The fee for this event is $10 per person if paying in advance and $13 per person if paying at the door.

Rec-Plex South is a newer building located just south of the original St. Peters Rec-Plex at 5200 Mexico Road. This is a lock-in event – kids will not be released until picked up by a parent or guardian.

Women Build Week St. Charles County women are invited to grab their hammers and volunteer during Habitat for Humanity’s sixth annual National Women Build Week. During the week of May 4-12, more than 300 Habitat affiliates nationwide will host women build projects in partnership with Lowe’s, the underwriter of Habitat’s Women Build program.

National Women Build Week challenges women to come together and devote at least one day to building simple, decent and affordable housing in their local communities. More than 41,000 women volunteers from all 50 states have participated in previous years.

To date, women volunteers have helped construct more than 2,100 Habitat houses nationwide. Locally, Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County has built more four Women Build houses.

Lowe’s contributes more than $1.75 million to National Women Build Week and provides $5,000 Lowe’s gift cards to more than 300 participating affiliates. National Women Build Week is one of the major initiatives supported through Lowe’s five-year, $20 million pledge to Habitat.

As the underwriter of the Women Build program since 2004, Lowe’s also conducts “How-To” clinics

at local stores to teach women key construction skills that will empower them to support Habitat projects across the country.

Weekend Nature Programs Back at Cuivre River

Cuivre River state park weekend nature programs and hikes will resume in May. Nature programs are held every Saturday evening in the Campground Amphitheater. Subjects vary, but usually include reptiles, raptors, bears, and more.

Nature hikes take place on Sunday mornings and start out in the campground. Times will vary but will be posted in advance at the Visitor Center, Campground and on the State Parks Facebook page.

Transition Fair for Students and Families The Lincoln County Transition Team will be hosting a transition fair at the Troy Buchanan High School Library on Tuesday, April 30 from 8-11:30am. This fair is open to all high school students and their families in Lincoln County.

The purpose of this fair is to give kids with IEPs and 504 plans and their families information to help them plan the transition from school to adult life. Transition topics include employment and case management services.

President and owner Russ Patton says the service and parts division of his business is growing fast, and space and personnel are needed to keep up the current level of customer care. “The time has come to invest,” says Patton.

“We were a manufacturer first.

Patton says, “We will have to fill this new building with people. We need four people so far, but we may need more later. We need technicians and sales people right now. But we are very selective.”

SSM Medical Group Names New Executive Director David A. Kelch, FACMPE, was recently named executive director of SSM Medical Group—West Region, which includes approximately 20 SSM Medical Group locations in St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties.

Kelch began his health care career at SSM St. Joseph Health Center while he was still in high school.

He worked his way into management there while earning undergraduate and master’s degrees. He joined Blanchette Management in 1987, where he was a medical group practice management consultant. Kelch left the organization in 1999 to manage a local orthopedics group and advise numerous physician practices in the Midwest.

In 2003, Kelch rejoined SSM Health Care and served as associate executive director for SSM Medical Group for 10 years. In that role, he headed all operations and office expansions for SSM Medical Group’s physicians’ offices west of the Missouri River.

Kelch is past president of MGMA-Missouri. MGMA is the Medical Group Management Association, a national organization with 48 state-affiliated bodies. Students in the Timberland High School Health Occupation Student Association (HOSA) chapter competed in their first Missouri State Convention in Union, Missouri on March 20th and nearly everyone who competed brought home an award and qualified to move on to the national competition. This is the first year of the extracurricular chapter at Timberland which is designed for students interested in the health field. HOSA is sponsored by Timberland teacher Meghan Aydelott and students must be enrolled in one of the District’s Project Lead the Way biomedical classes in order to be a member of the chapter. The national competition will be held in Nashville, TN June 26-29. WSD Students Win at Regional Math Competition Wentzville School District students competed in the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) 28th Annual Regional Math Competitions held at several St. Charles County schools over the last four weeks. Most students participated at the regional event held on Saturday, March 23 at Rock Creek Elementary School in O’Fallon. Nearly 40 students in grades 4 and 5 from Boone Trail, Crossroads, Green Tree and Prairie View Elementary Schools, as well as a group of 6th graders from Frontier Middle School, competed by taking tests in Concepts and Problem Solving. Gary Baute Rascals’ Coach on The Big Screen The River City Rascals announced the debut of assistant coach Danny Sawyer in the newly-released movie 42, the biographical movie about Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play Major League Baseball.

On the screen, Sawyer plays Bruce Edwards, the reallife catcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers when Robinson broke the color barrier. The film stars Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey and Chadwick Boseman as Robinson.

“The whole Rascals family is very proud of the work Danny did on the movie,” said Dan Dial, Rascals general manager. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and he will always be able to look back on film and see the part he played in telling Jackie Robinson’s big screen story. Above All Things, a novel by debut author Tanis Rideout is more than just the tale of George Mallory’s drive to scale a mountain that stirs his blood and enslaves him. It’s also a love story, a book spawned by Rideout’s curiosity about the woman behind the man — Mallory’s wife, Ruth, and what marriage to an adventurer like Mallory would be like.

It’s a relationship of long absences and incessant dread of bad news, a marriage strained by empty words, “ . . . I’m done with it. I don’t need it. I need to be with you,” a promise made after the second attempt in 1922, when Mallory took what many thought were unnecessary risks, leading to the death of seven Sherpas lost in an avalanche.

Two years later, Mallory, the father of three, knows he’s growing older. If he’s going to attempt the climb again, it must be now. And so in 1924, he answers the siren’s call by joining a climbing expedition of five, which includes the youngest member of the group, Sandy Irvine. While the others in the climbing party stay at advanced base camp, the two venture forward in a harrowing climb that costs them their lives. To this day, speculation remains as to whether or not they reached the summit.

Sweet Tips for Sweet Treats

You might have a favorite cookie or brownie recipe—but did you know you could make it even better by adding a simple, familiar ingredient?

With a few expert tips from Buddy Valastro, author and star of TLC’s “Cake Boss,” you can take your sweet treats from good to great in no time.

• Start with Quality Ingredients: When you start with better ingredients, you end up with a better cookie or brownie. Use real butter, highquality vanilla and great tasting chocolate. Here, Buddy shares some of his favorite recipes that use M&M’S candies to add an extra special touch to family favorites.

• Chill the Dough: Leaving cookie dough in the refrigerator gives it more body and results in a fuller and better tasting cookie. Plan ahead so you can refrigerate your dough at least one hour or, even better, overnight.

• Keep It Uniform: Use a small ice cream scoop to keep your cookies the same size. This not only helps them look professional, but bake up evenly and consistently.

• Pans Matter: Bake cookies on light-colored, non-insulated cookie sheets without sides. Metal pans will cook brownies faster than glass pans, which means cooking times will vary. Start checking your brownies early to test if they’re ready and prevent over baking.

Ultimate Peanut Butter Brownies Ingredients: 4 ounces semisweet chocolate 1 cup canola or vegetable oil 2 cups sugar 4 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder

Makes 32 brownies

1 teaspoon salt 2 cups M&M’S Peanut Butter Candies, divided Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a rectangular 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan.

In 3-quart saucepan, gently combine the semisweet chocolate and oil over very low heat until melted. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

Simply Sweet Cannoli Ingredients: 1 cup Snickers Bars, finely chopped 1 1/2 cups part skim milk ricotta 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest 1 resealable plastic bag

In separate bowl, combine sugar, eggs and vanilla extract until blended. Add in chocolate mixture. Slowly sift in remaining dry ingredients and mix until combined.

Fold in 1 1/2 cups candies.

Spread batter into pan. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup candies and press lightly.

Bake until brownies begin to pull away from Simply Sweet Cannoli sides of pan, about 30 to 40 minutes.

24 mini cannoli shells, unfilled 1/2 cup M&M’S Chocolate Candies Directions: 1. Combine chopped candy bars with ricotta, sugar and orange zest.

Milk Chocolate Minis Cookies Ingredients: 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 3/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 1 cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/3 cup cocoa powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 3/4 cups M&M’S Milk Chocolate Minis Candies 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

2. Spoon mixture into resealable bag and snip off a 1/2-inch corner. Fill cannoli shells by squeezing in filling from each end. Decorate both ends with chocolate candies.

Makes 24 to 30 cookies

and mix to combine. In separate bowl, sift flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt.

Slowly add dry ingredients to butter mixture, and stir until combined.Fold in candies and walnuts, if desired. Chill dough 1 hour, or overnight.

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. In large bowl, cream butter and both sugars until well blended. Add eggs and vanilla extract,

The Sad Tale of a Crock-Pot Crackpot I found an old recipe for sauerkraut and decided to fire up the crock-pot. First it called for pork spareribs. I didn’t have any, but I did have some country pork ribs. Are spareribs made in the city? I never saw any pigs in our subdivision, but who cares? In they went.

Next it called for 32 ounces of sauerkraut. I had that covered. But wait, it also called for a head of cabbage!

Cabbage?

Cabbage is for St. Patrick’s day.

I called a chef at my favorite restaurant and asked why cabbage is included in German sauerkraut recipes. After he was done laughing, he said, “Sauerkraut is fermented cabbage you Schweinhund.” He hung up.

Ferment? Isn’t that what moon-shiners do? Yuck! I

decided to use lettuce.

It called for a thinly sliced onion. I began slicing one.

After the second slice, I sliced my index finger. The onion fell on the floor. I bandaged my finger and washed the blood and “greebles” off the onion. I finished slicing while I sang Mack the Knife. I’m sure it helped.

Then four cups of water, one can of chicken broth and...wait a minute! Chicken broth? I considered calling the chef again, but what did he know. I wasn’t planning on chicken soup, so I didn’t have any chicken broth.

I dumped in a small jar of chicken bouillon cubes I had bought it eight years ago. Does bouillon go bad? Surely not. Oh wait, I forgot to take the foil off. I dipped them out, removed the foil from each cube and threw them back in. I was sure I got them all.

Then, it called for one bottle of beer with the fizz removed. Bottle? Fizz removed? How weird. I only had cans. I figured heat would remove the fizz. I dumped one can in a glass and put it in the microwave. It boiled over in frothing wrath.

Did I disturb the beer gods? I dumped the rest in the crock-pot. This sure turned out to be nerve-racking. No wonder so many single guys go to restaurants. Since I might have offended the beer gods, I drank two more cans of beer. Why take chances?

The final touch was minced garlic and a pinch of caraway seeds. I thought a pinch was something bar-maids suffer. I called my

favorite bartender and asked how much a pinch was? He said one holds a pinch between thumb and forefinger and then gets thrown out.

Oh. Now I got it.

I didn’t know what caraway seeds were anyway. However, I did have a small bag of sunflower seeds my kids didn’t find. One pinch was only one seed. Oh well, one seed it is. Maybe I’d cheat a little and put in another one.

I ate the rest. Waste not, want not.

I turned the crock-pot on low and left to run some errands. The errands evolved into lunch with friends.

The lunch evolved into an afternoon at a bowling alley, which evolved into happy hour at the local pub where we all enjoyed great happiness.

I got home after dark and smelled something terrible when I opened the door. The crock-pot bubbled away with an aroma that would have terrified a starving vulture. I opened all the windows to air out the odoriferous Eau De Sewer Gas. Then I braved a taste. It included a piece of tinfoil. Before I could shout “Eeeeewwww” the neighbor yelled in the open window, “You better call the fire department. You have a gas leak.”

Wow, a real comedian. I wondered if that restaurant was still open.
