Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner, and you know what that means: a day off and barbecue! Right?

Of course, Americans can and should spend time with their friends and families on Memorial Day weekend, enjoying the fact that they live in a nation with an elected government that works to provide “liberty and justice for all.”

Just don’t forget to take a moment to remember the veterans who sacrificed so you could enjoy such freedoms.

And that’s all you need really: one moment. According to Laura Fitzpatrick in Time magazine, “At 3pm local time, according to the 2000 National Moment of Remembrance Act, which was passed to emphasize the meaning of Memorial Day, all Americans should ‘voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to “Taps.’”

However, if you’d like to take more than a moment this weekend to recognize your country’s fallen soldiers, there are several Memorial Day services happening around the area.

O’Fallon A Memorial Day Ceremony commemorating U.S. military personnel who died while in service will be held at

11am on Monday, May 27, at O’Fallon Veterans Memorial Walk, 800 Belleau Creek Road, O’Fallon. Free parking is available. Brigadier General Greg S. Champagne, U.S.A.F, will be the keynote speaker.

St. Charles The joint St. Charles City-County Memorial Day commemorative event will be held at the St. Charles City Veteran’s Memorial on Bishop’s Landing on May 27 at 1pm. Tom Kuypers, Veterans of Foreign Wars-Post 2866 will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Patriotic music will be provided by the St. Charles Municipal Band. Bishop’s Landing is on the Missouri riverfront just off Riverside Drive adjacent to the Lewis & Clark Boat House and Nature Center. In the event of inclement weather, the 2013 Memorial Day program will be held at American Legion Post 312 located at 2500 Raymond Drive in St. Charles.

St. Peters to Host Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony The public is invited to a special Remembrance Ceremony on May 27 at the Veterans Memorial in front of St. Peters City Hall. Weather permitting, a Medevac helicopter will land on the City Hall

Golf Charity Application Deadline May 24 Mayor Sally Faith announced today the 16th annual Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament will be held at Bogey Hills Country Club on Monday, August 12, 2013. Lt. Governor Peter Kinder Honors Jack Dirks Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder recently announced 34 winners of the Lieutenant Governor’s Senior Service Award, including Jack Dirks of St. Charles.

Lt. Governor Kinder presented the awards May 8 at a luncheon for the winners and their guests outside his office in the Capitol. Patty was nominated by Charlotte Litle of the Garden View Care Center in O’Fallon.

Dirks’ volunteerism flowed from his daily visits to his wife, who lives at Garden View Care Center. When visiting, he took it upon himself to care for the center’s fishpond, which is filled with Koi goldfish. He makes sure the filters are cleaned, the fish are fed and debris is cleaned out of the pond and picked up on the grounds. He also helps patients with various activities at the center.

“His presence, quiet demeanor and corny jokes bring a smile to the residents and also to the staff, who consider Jack to be a close, personal family member,” said Litle in her nomination. “On the rare days he is not here, everyone asks, ‘Where’s Jack?’”

Lt. Governor Kinder presented Dirks with an official declaration and a Senior Service Award lapel pin at a ceremony in the House Lounge at the Capitol on May 8.

“Jack Dirks sets an example for all Missourians with his kindness and willingness to serve the residents at Garden View Care Center,” Kinder said. “His selfless service is an inspiration to all who know him.”

Kinder this year received more than 150 nominations for the Senior Service Award, naming 34 winners representing the state’s 34 Senate Districts. Dirks won in District 2.

On Saturday, October 26, 2013, pet lovers from all around the St. Louis Metropolitan area will line up at the St. Charles Convention center for the 5th annual St. Louis Pet Expo. In no way is this your run-of-the-mill pet event.

There is something for pet lovers of all ages. There are over 150 exhibitors and vendors that give attendees the opportunity to find the newest and trendiest pet products and services available.

These exhibitors range from locally-owned companies to nationally-recognized trainers and veterinarians.

Local rescue groups are there, not only to spread awareness on their cause, but they participate in the Mega-Adoption Event.

There are over 200 pets available for adoption. The fun isn’t reserved for dogs; you can find something for cats, reptiles, birds and more. Winners Announced in 21st Annual Community College Run Events Considering the rainy days leading up to the event, nearly 790 runners and walkers welcomed a misty morning to take part in the 10K, 5K and Fun Run, held on April 27 at St. Charles Community College. The events were part of the college’s 21st annual RUN. LIVE. LEARN. event that drew more than 1,000 area residents for a morning of health, fitness and family recreation.

In the top SCC student, alumni and employee 10K categories, the first male SCC student to cross the finish line was Max Cameron (46:49) and the first female student to finish was Amy Wilson (53:29).

The first male alum to cross the finish line was Victor Halamicek (37:01), and the first female alum was Ashleigh Robinson (52:39). In the employee division, George Bognar (55:54), continuing education instructor, was the first male to cross the finish line. The first female employee to finish was Rachel Murphy, manager of workforce initiatives for nursing and allied health (54:49).

In the 5K Race, Trent Sever, 22, of Wood River, was first to cross the finish line. He came in with a time of 17 minutes, 55 seconds, followed by Najim Udchachon at 18 minutes, 33 seconds, and Greg Beasley at 20 minutes, 2 seconds. Samantha Cary, 12, of St. Charles, was the first female to cross the finish line, coming in sixth overall with a time of 20:29. Sever and Cary, the male and female overall winners, each received a $50 cash prize. Cary donated her winnings to the SCC Young People’s Theatre program.

In the top SCC student, alumni and employee 5K categories, the first male SCC student to cross the finish line was Darren Marcum (21:28) and the first female student to finish was Elena Hoffman (26:11). The first male alum to cross the finish line was Ian Turner (25:41), and the first female alum was Jennifer Burns (30:07). In the employee division, Paul Wright (20:27), physical education adjunct faculty member, was the first male to cross the finish line. The first female employee to finish was Beth Finders, professor of psychology (31:09).

Nearly 150 trophies and medals were awarded in age group categories in the 10K, 5K and Fun Run events. About 264 runners entered the 10K race; the 5K, 363; and the Fun Run, 161. A total of 788 runners registered for the event.

New in 2013 was a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship to SCC. All 10K and 5K run registrants, ages 18 and above, were automatically entered into the drawing. The winner is Sherri Kulpa, 46, of Weldon Spring, and vice principal at Kirkwood High School.

Kulpa has decided to donate the scholarship to a student in need at Francis Howell High School where her son goes to school, therefore taking advantage of the one-time transfer option available to the scholarship winner.

By State Treasurer Clint Zweifel As we head into the warm-weather months, we all start to mark some special occasions on our calendars—the last day of school, graduations, weddings and family vacations. On May 29, I invite you to join me in celebrating another important occasion, 529 College Savings Day ®, by learning more about MOST—Missouri’s 529 College Savings Plan.

As state treasurer, one of the ways I commemorate this day is by spending time with schoolchildren. I read to them, participate in their activities and talk to them about the importance of doing well in school and going to college. I also talk to their parents and explain how plans like MOST 529 can help families take the first steps in saving for higher education.

We need to take action to make higher education a reality for our children. Saving for college can seem an impossible hurdle to new parents and even to parents with college-age children.

The cost of college keeps going up, and while you may not be able to save enough to cover the entire cost of your child’s education, saving a little each month can make a big impact on higher-education expenses. They started small, saved little by little, and eventually were able to help put me through college. I encourage Missourians to make the same investment in the lives of children they know.

St. Peters Kids’ Golf Area youth can have fun playing and learning the game of golf during some friendly competition this summer at St. Peters Golf Course. Junior Golf Leagues begin June 5 for ages 7-17. League play takes place on Wednesday afternoons.

St. Peters Junior Leagues are assisted-play leagues, which mean that players are guided through their rounds of golf to learn about the etiquette of the game and proper way to move along in a timely manner. Players are split into three age groups for fair competition as they strive for a trophy on Championship Day. Junior League players also get to choose their group of four players each round so that they can play with friends.

Three divisions of Junior League play are available: Cubs, ages 7-10, play 9-hole rounds on a shortened course; Tigers, ages 1114, play 9 holes from the yellow tees for juniors; and Masters, ages 15-17, play 18 holes from the longer white tees.

After each round of golf, players are treated to cool refreshments while relaxing and checking the day’s scores on a large scoreboard.

The last day of Junior Leagues on Aug. 7 is called Championship Day, when St. Peters Golf Course will provide lunch, trophies and a chance to win prizes.

Park Board Looking for Applicants The City of Troy is looking for civic-minded city residents who have an interest in working to help better Troy by serving on the Park Board. The board meets on the second Monday of every month at 6:30. Applicants must reside in the city limits of Troy. If you wish to apply, simply complete the board application and return it to city hall. Mouse Races Benefit Lincoln-Pike County’s Drug Court Foundation A mouse race will be hosted by the members of the LincolnPike Count’s Drug Court Foundation. Along with the races, participants will enjoy live music, food, 50/50 drawings and a silent auction. Please note: this is an alcohol-free event. The races and auction item viewing will begin at 7pm at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 1.

Troy R III Offers Alternative Kindergarten Registration Sites Parents in the Troy R III School District can now register their children for kindergarten any day of the week without going to the R-III District’s offices. During June 3-7, June 24-28 and July 15-18, district officials will be helping families register for kindergarten at local retail stores.

On Mondays, R-III officials will register incoming kindergarten students at Wal-Mart. On Tuesdays, families can register at Kroger. On Wednesdays, registration will take place at the Bread for Life Food Pantry and Aquatic Center, and on Thursdays, registration will be at Dollar General. During the June dates listed above, families can register incoming kindergarten students at Aldi. Registration will be open from 8:30am - 2:30pm. Look for the big yellow bus.

Early Aquatic Center Passes Available May 25 The Troy Aquatic Center is open. The city will host an early pool pass sign-up day on Saturday, 25 from 9am - 1 pm inside City Hall at 800 Cap Au Gris.

This allows families and individuals to come in other than during business hours to get their photos taken for resident or season passes. For family passes, each family member must be present to have his or her picture taken for a pass.

Midwest Pool Management officials will also be available to sign individuals up for swimming lessons and other programs. For more information, call 636.528.4712.

Summer Reading and Activities Program at R III The free Dig into Summer Reading program is open to students from all six elementary schools in the R-III District, but students must apply. To be eligible, children must have completed Kindergarten and be no older than entering sixth grade. The four week program is from 9 to 11:30 am on Tuesdays and Wednesdays only. Camps will take place June 4 – 26 and July 2- 24. Students will explore what they read about with arts and crafts, an archeological dig, gardening and more.

Children who attend the following local day cares and day camps will be provided bus service: First Step Preschool, Teeter Totter Learning Center, Stepping Stones, Growing Tree Preschool, Asbury Preschool, Academy Too, First Baptist Extended Daycare and Smart Start Learning Center. Applications are available at each elementary school and the childcare centers listed above. The summer reading program is funded with a $7,000 through a Library Services and Technology grant.

A+ Program Opens Registration to Eighth Graders The A+ Program is a state-lead initiative that affords students the opportunity to obtain two years at a state community college or a state technical school with tuition reimbursement. Students can begin signing up for the program in the fourth quarter of their eighth grade year. In addition, the students must complete the following requirements: They must enter into a written agreement with the high school to participate in the A+ Schools Student Financial Incentives Program, attend a designated A+ School for three consecutive years prior to high school graduation, graduate from high school with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher, have at least a 95 percent attendance record for the four-year period, perform and document 50 hours of unpaid tutoring or mentoring for younger students during the four years of high school at a school in the Lincoln County R-III School District, maintain a record of good citizenship and avoidance of the unlawful use of drugs and/or alcohol, make a documented good faith effort to secure all available federal post-secondary student financial assistance funds that do not require repayment, and (beginning with the high school senior class of 2015) have achieved a score of proficient or advanced on the Algebra I end of course exam. Beginning in 2015, students who do not meet the Algebra I end of course requirement may regain eligibility by completing their first semester at a participating institution with a minimum of 12 hours and a 2.5 grade point average. This semester is not eligible for A+ tuition reimbursement and tuition must be paid by the student.

Bank on More at a Credit Union If your financial institution keeps sending you emails and mailings promoting their low rates on mortgage loans and home equity lines, but every time you apply you are told your credit score is too low, it may be time to consider a better alternative.

Better Rates, Fewer Fees A credit union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members. They are convenient to do business with too. Many credit unions participate in shared branching where credit union branch locations are “shared” with other credit unions to better serve their members so they can conveniently conduct transactions where they live, work or travel. Currently, there are over 4,500+ shared branch locations nationwide.

At the same time, most credit unions participate in ATM networks with machines at many other financial institutions and retail locations. Credit unions typically charge lower ATM fees or no fees at all, although you may have to pay a fee to the financial institution the ATM belongs to – if there is one.

Credit unions also offer online and mobile banking technologies on par with those offered at retail banks.

Choosing a Credit Union Traditionally credit unions were affiliated with places of employment. However, now many are open to people who live in a specific community, county or state. Others are comprised of groups such as places of worship, industries and trade associations.

WSD Educators Selected for Teacher’s Academy Two Wentzville teachers have been chosen to participate in the 2013-14 Teacher’s Academy through the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Cooperating School Districts. Michele Cherry from South Middle School and Chelsea Kuhn from Heritage Primary are two of only fifteen teachers selected from the entire St. Louis area.

The Teachers Academy is modeled after the very successful Leadership Academy, which has been fundamental in providing professional growth for Chelsea Kuhn Michele Cherry school district administrators. The primary goals of the Teacher’s Academy are to deepen the pedagogical skills and content knowledge of participating teachers and develop leadership skills. The academy fellows are involved in a year-long commitment, focusing on best practices, action research and collaboration with other high quality educators throughout the St. Louis region.

Gary Baute Rascals Open 2013 Season The squad opened the season in Florence, KY, and now Steve Brook, manager and director of baseball operations, has a chance to show off his rebuilt team to the hometown fans.

In recent years, the River City Rascals have strung together one of the most impressive shows of dominance in Frontier League history, taking the Western Division title for three straight years (20092011) and winning the Frontier League Championship in 2010. Last season proved to be a bit of a down-year for River City, but Brook flipped (nearly) the whole roster over in preparation for 2013, with his Rascals poised to make another run for the Frontier Cup. “All these new players are all proven guys who have made their mark on the league in recent years. Just as important, though, is the character they all possess; we’re proud of the fact that we bring solid individuals into our clubhouse,” said Brook.

Bears and Lady Bears Get Arena Expansion When Missouri State University’s JQH Arena opened in 2008, shell space was left for a locker room complex with the anticipation it would be completed at a later date through private gifts. Now that vision will become a reality.

Before the 2013-14 basketball season is completed, the Bears and Lady Bears will be using locker rooms, offices and meeting space in the Jim D. Morris Basketball Complex. The complex was named in the spring of 2013 in recognition of the lead gift from Morris, a Springfield philanthropist and long-time supporter of the University.

The $3.7 million project, which will be funded exclusively through private contributions, will begin in June and is scheduled to be completed November 8, 2013. DeWitt and Associates, Inc., was awarded the construction contract at the Board of Governors Executive Committee meeting Wednesday (May 15) and was ratified by the full Board today (May 16) at its regularly scheduled meeting.

“We are excited to get this project under way,” said Missouri State President Clifton M. Smart III. “We already have one of the best arenas in the country, and the Jim D. Morris Complex will just make it that much better. We are indebted to the donors who are making this possible. Without the private support, this project simply doesn’t happen.”

Ingredients: 2 onions, cut into eighths 1/4 cup Italian dressing 14 ounces Italian with sundried tomato sausages, cut into 1” sections 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, diced into 20 pieces

Serves: 20

20 large toothpicks or small skewers Directions: Marinate onion petals in dressing for 20 minutes. Skewer 2 onion petals and a sausage onto toothpick. Grill until sausage reaches 165° (approximately 5 minutes). Add a chunk of mozzarella to each skewer; serve.

Ingredients: 1 egg 1 pound ground turkey or ground chicken 1/4 cup old fashioned oats 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper 2 tablespoons parsley flakes 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1 clove of garlic, minced 1/2 cup red pepper, minced 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup BBQ sauce 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into 1/2-inch rings 1 red onion, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch rings 1 green pepper, cored and cut into 1/2inch rings 4 hamburger buns 4 slices pepper Jack sliced cheese Directions: Beat egg in a bowl. Add ground turkey or chicken, oats, crushed red pepper, parsley, salt, pepper, minced garlic and minced red pepper. Mix together until incorporated.

sit in the fridge for 5 minutes. Mix together mayonnaise and BBQ sauce. Set aside. Heat grill to medium/high temperature.

Place patties on the grill and cook for 5 to 7 minutes each side until desired doneness. Brush oil on slices of pineapple, onion and green pepper, then grill 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Lightly grill the bun and set aside. Spread both sides of the bun with the mayonnaise BBQ sauce.

When burger is almost finished cooking, place 1 slice of cheese on each patty and continue to grill until melted. To assemble the burger, layer the bottom of the bun with the patty with cheese, pineapple, onion, green pepper and top half of bun.

Joe Morice Are Women Superior?

A famous TV analyst claims women are superior to men. I have no idea what a TV analyst does, but I will begrudgingly admit this observation has a considerable degree of truth. Having had four sisters that earned better grades than I did gives it credence, in my opinion. For that matter, it wasn’t until I was in my mid-teens before I could even run faster and it wasn’t by much. I was thankful I could carry more hay bales.

My sisters also all had great handwriting and could draw much better. My handwriting was so bad, my teachers thought I belonged on the short bus and my artwork looked like a Rorschach test.

Modern women have finally made inroads into equality. They’re still suffering unequal pay in the work place, but they’re getting closer to men’s pay levels every day. I’m sure they still have to fend off occasional work place macho attempts on their virtue.

Having professional daughters, I’ve always recommended pepper spray as opposed to .357 Magnums.

Most families have both parents working to meet today’s income standards as listed in the popular book, “Yuppie Instructions for Success”. It mentions twostory homes with plasma TVs, weird-looking luxury

SUVs, boats, motorcycles and other expensive toys, as well as domestic cleaning and lawn services by oppressed minorities. There haven’t been many stay-athome moms until some were laid off due to our recent send-jobs-to-starving-countries recession.

One of my professional daughters is a single mom.

In today’s world, they aren’t unusual. Had I been a single dad, I’m sure I would’ve failed miserably. I still can’t understand how she did this so well. My grandchildren are wonderful, but perhaps I’m prejudiced.

The more I consider this TV analyst’s contention, the more I see he’s right. But this only annoys me because he is connected with TV, a device I consider the be-all, end-all of evil Orwellian mindlessness. I knew “Father Knows Best” and “Ozzie and Harriet” were fantasies even before they became reruns. Mothers from my youth didn’t walk around large expensive houses in stylish attire all day. They sometimes wore baggy faded dresses and old shoes with holes for bunions.

They also worked all day and into the night keeping us in clean, patched clothes, balanced meals and childhood discipline that sometimes included a pretty fair overhand smack. Were they superior? Perhaps it depends on who’s defining it.

Long ago, women usually worked harder and longer than men at everything, including how to look nice on

Saturday night, should an occasion arise. They still do.

One only has to look at the facts when considering the superiority of modern women, especially if it includes their patience with egotistical male bosses that believe women are merely token employees even though they’re often smarter, better dressed and end up making their male bosses look good. My own professional daughters are so much smarter than their male bosses its embarrassing and I don’t claim that just because they’re my daughters. It seems some of today’s corporate ladder climbers are more into blind ambition than smart.

One might say the only real difference that some would label as male superiority is upper body strength.

However, men watching a pretty girl stroll by in a mini skirt and heels probably negates this concept. It usually only takes a pretty smile to turn us guys into mush.

The old adage, “A boy chases a girl until she catches him” is profoundly true.

Yup. Women are superior. I can live with that…I think. The question is, “can they?”
