Riverside Shakespeare Theatre Company This summer season, Riverside Shakespeare Theater Co. and the City of Saint Charles Arts and Culture Commission present Shakespeare’s tragic romance Romeo and Juliet directed by Melissa Boyer and produced by Christopher Ferguson.

This year, the concept for the show looks to a time in American history that actually mirrors the story of Romeo and Juliet itself, the Hatfields and McCoys’ famous family feud of the late 1880’s.

Audience members are encouraged to choose sides before the show as they sit to enjoy what will be an exciting performance packed with action, drama, feuding, and of course, one of the most famous love stories of all time.

Audience members are encouraged to bring a blanket, chairs and even a picnic basket for a picturesque evening—all for absolutely free. Sunday evening performances are perfect for dinner and a

show. Food Truck concessions will be available on-site.

The stage will be set in Wapelhorst Park’s soccer fields (1874 Muegge Rd., St Charles). Show dates and times are Friday, June 21 at 8pm, Saturday, June 22 at 8pm, a Sunday June 23 matinee at 5pm and Friday, June 28 at 8pm, Saturday, June 29 at 8pm, and another Sunday, June 30 matinee at 5pm.

Riverside Shakespeare Co. is a local non-profit theater company dedicated to providing free performances for St. Charles City and County. Last year Riverside Shakespeare presented As You Like It, directed by Dr. Judy Yordon, with great success and audience accolades. Funding for this and last year’s performance is provided by the City of St. Charles Arts and Culture Commission and generous contributions from benefactors and local businesses.

International Food Festival, June 21-23 From tacos and tequila to grilling and grapes, spoil yourself with the sights, sounds and the laidback flavor only the quaint city of Cottleville can offer. This International Food Festival event, June 21 – 23, features diverse and celebrated food, beer, wine, music, art and dance. The unique schedule of events includes a fabulous opening performance by Vivant Entertainment featuring a trapeze artist and ribbon aerialists.

A wide array of food vendors will offer festivalgoers a smorgasbord of menus to choose from for lunch and/or dinner. Types of food include Greek, Mexican, Italian, Indian, Irish, Japanese and American cuisine, just to name a few.

The sounds of salsa, merengue, and bachata dominate when the Latin band takes the stage at Ricks Roadside Market located just one mile from downtown Cottleville at 5382 Guttermuth Road.

Local artist Jennifer Hayes will create a brightcolored painting of the festival as it evolves and will sell the painting at the end of the event. She specializes in creating live-artwork for parties, openings, and events in the St. Louis area and beyond.

Molly M. Collier of Studio M Boutique is a St. Louis-based artist with a passion for fashion, who is making a name for herself one stiletto at a time.

Collier takes women’s shoe pumps and wedges to the next level by hand-painting and detailing them; thus creating a custom look that is unique to each client. Collier will paint two pairs of shoes for sale with each pair to benefit the Lauren Murphy Recovery Fund and High Heels, High Hopes.

Saturday begins with family day. Enjoy the petting zoo, child play area, gypsy caravan of vendors, international wine and beer gardens live music, strolling guitarist and saxophone extraordinaire.

Barrie Lynn, the cheese impresario and cheese columnist for The Beverly Hills Times writing the monthly “Cheese Matters” column that covers all things cheesy will increase knowledge and pleasure of artisanal cheese and wine pairing. Lynn is currently presenting her Artisanal Cheese and Wine Pairing Adventure Seminar for the 8th year at LA WineFest.

An Arabian Night-themed VIP event will begin at 7pm featuring belly dancers, musicians, cigars and henna. The event will benefit the Lauren Murphy Recovery Fund. Lauren is local girl that suffered a traumatic brain injury. An additional portion of the proceeds will be donated to assist in the building of a new amphitheater for the City of Cottleville.

The small stage will feature cooking demonstrations by local chefs. Spice it up with a visit to our international spice market. Taste the flavors of the world and finish it off with some delectable desserts.

St. Peters Extending Waiving RV Parking Restrictions The City of St. Peters is waiving the parking restrictions for recreational vehicles parked on residential lots through June 30. This temporary action does not allow parking recreational vehicles on the street. The City previously waived parking restrictions until June 14, but has extended this period due to continued flooding.

“Since many RV storage areas and boat docks are affected by flooding, we decided to waive the restrictions on parking these recreational vehicles until a time when the areas where these vehicles are normally stored could be accessible,” said St. Peters Mayor Len Pagano.

Not even the floods in Frontier Park could stop the event planners - Unlimited Play, United Services for Children and Mike Matheny’s Catch 22 Foundation as they swiftly moved the entire event to Mueller Sports Complex 4 days before the scheduled race.

The mission of the Shelter Insurance ShowMe State Games torch run is to generate exposure and enthusiasm for the Show-Me State Games throughout Missouri. The Show-Me State Games is an Olympic-style sports festival offering more than 40 events for all ages and ability levels. The 2013 GAMES took place on June 14-16 and will continue July 19-21 and July 26-28 in Columbia, Mo. The torch run will take place in St. Charles on July 9 at Frontier Park. The torch run will culminate with the Opening Ceremonies festivities at Mizzou Arena on Friday, July 19 at 7 pm.

The last time the Show-Me State Games hosted a torch run was more than ten years ago.

Hungarian Artist at O’Fallon’s Cultural Arts Gallery

An exhibit of paintings by Hungarian artist Tibor Tornyai is on display through Friday, July 12 at O’Fallon’s Cultural Arts Gallery at the Renaud Spirit Center (RSC), located at 2650 Tri Sports Circle, O’Fallon.

Tornyai is an artist and educator whose landscapes, still life paintings and portraits are painted in the tradition of the great Flemish and Dutch artists of the 17th Century. “When you paint, the world is closed around you and you move to the point of the brush,” Tornyai says. MoDOT Announces Early Open Date for Blanchette Bridge Missouri Department of Transportation District Engineer Ed Hassinger and City of St. Charles Mayor Sally Faith held a joint news conference to announce the I-70 Blanchette Missouri River Bridge rehabilitation project is ahead of schedule.

“We are pleased to announce today that our reconstruction work is progressing ahead of the one year schedule,” said Hassinger. “The contractor, Walsh Construction, is pushing to open the bridge to traffic before the City’s annual Festival of the Little Hills in mid-August. That goal would be nearly three (3) months ahead of the original schedule.”

“I cannot commend MoDOT enough for their tremendous job they did in managing this project,” stated Mayor Faith. “The partnership between the City and MoDOT demonstrated a major construction effort can be accomplished with little or no negative impacts.”

“We also want to thank the City of St. Charles for the team approach to this. Their cooperation and assistance with the local businesses has made this a smooth process for everyone,” said Hassinger.

St. Charles Keeps Mosquitoes at Bay The City of St. Charles has implemented a program to help control the public health annoyance caused by mosquitoes. This program utilizes a product called MasterLine Kontrol 4-4. The product is applied in each ward of the city once a week using truck mounted sprayers. The product does not pose a health risk to humans or animals; however please take reasonable steps to avoid the fog when possible. Appropriate steps include the following: • Close vehicle windows if you are following a mosquito spray truck • Keep yourself and children out of the street until the fog settles or dissipates • Wash skin and hands if irritated by direct contact with the chemical

• Do not attempt to stop or get the attention of the mosquito truck operator, as trucks are calibrated to distribute the proper amount of chemical.

There are additional steps that all residents can take to help prevent mosquitoes from breeding and becoming adults. We ask that everyone follow these guidelines to prevent mosquitoes from becoming a nuisance to you and your neighbors: • Eliminate all standing water from areas on your property • Remove water from tires, buckets, and other items that collect water • Don’t dump grass clippings, branches or other items in storm drains or ditches • Fill holes in trees with sand or mortar • Scrub and change the water in bird baths weekly • Empty and refill your pets’ water pans daily • Empty any small plastic wading pools weekly (store indoors when not in use) • Properly maintain your swimming pool and keep it covered so as not to collect rain water • Contact the City of St. Charles (636.949.3227) if you know of large bodies of stagnant water, this way we can take appropriate steps to eliminate the water.

Titus Project Helps Running for Water Steve Spear is running across America to raise money and bring awareness to the desperate need for clean water in Africa. Local student Samantha Miller heard about his efforts and decided she could do something to help.

Samantha started the homeschoolers’ group the Titus Project with the idea that they would do small service projects around the community and then one larger service project each year that would have more of a global impact. She heard about Steve Spears’ lofty ambition to run across America and raise awareness and 1.5 million dollars to get running water, sanitation, etc. to a village in Africa. She knew that was the project for which God was calling students in the Titus Project to raise money.

They organized a craft fair and a garage sale. The amount raised from these events was about $900.

All of The Titus Project profits this year go directly to World Vision’s Running For Water.

Samantha also dances with My King Studio of Dance in O’Fallon (www.mykingstudio.com), and every year at their dance concert the studio allows a flower sales table to benefit a worthy cause. As a result of flower sales, Miller raised an additional $860 for clean water.

All Marines Welcomed to Corps Detachment 1405 League Meeting In April, the Lincoln County Marine Detachment 1405 was officially formed by the Marine Corps League at a charter signing ceremony at VFW Post 8828 in Troy. Detachment 1405 is open to all marines—active, reserve, retired, honorably discharged, and FMF corpsmen.

Marine Corps Detachment 1405 League meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month at 7 pm at VFW Post 8828, 440 Hwy J, Troy. Officer meetings are held one hour prior and are open to active members. The Marine Corps League was established to foster camaraderie and continue traditions from multiple generations of marines.

The Troy Story Mission Team plans to bring more than 400 teenagers and adults to Troy to improve the homes of local residents. Elderly, handicapped, military families and lower-income residents of Troy can get free home repairs.

As many as 80 local residents will benefit from the work of a projected 500 adult and teenage volunteers at the Troy Story Work Camp from July 21-27. The work camp will provide free home repairs through the Group Cares program, sponsored locally by the churches of Lincoln County.

Group Cares is a non-profit, interdenominational Christian volunteer home-repair organization headquartered in Loveland, Colorado.

This summer, an anticipated 25,000 young people and adults will participate in 48 Work Camps in communities across the United States and Canada.

At each Work Camp, teenagers and adults from of church youth groups will volunteer a week of their time to repair homes throughout

the community. This represents about 12,000 hours of volunteer labor with a total economic impact to the community of over $300,000.00.

“These really are remarkable young people,” said Jeff Thompson, of Group Cares. “Each one is actually paying for the privilege of working in your community. Work Camp registration fees are used to cover our costs for food, insurance, and building materials.”

The Work Camp will be housed at Troy Buchanan High School with Work Campers sleeping on classroom floors, eating in the cafeteria, and enjoying evening programs in the gym.

The Troy Story is led by Barb Jones, Norma Guyot, Rob Bruce and George Tucker, all members of churches in Troy and previous Work Campers. They have all seen the impact that a Work Camp can have on a community and it was on a Mission Trip similar to this one that they decided to bring the opportunity to Troy.

The Troy Story has been in the planning stages for nearly two years, and the arrival of the youth is anxiously awaited.

City of Troy Public Hearing The City of Troy will hold a public hearing on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 6 pm for the purpose of citizen input on: (1) Water/Sewer Rate Increases in compliance with RSMo 250.233: and (2) Proposed 2013-2014 City Budget.

A Special Board Meeting will be held immediately thereafter for the purpose of 1) discussing and possibly passing an ordinance increasing water/sewer rates: 2) discussing and possibly adopting the annual budget, and 3) approving any budget amendments thereto. The meetings will be held at the Troy City Hall, 800 Cap-au-Gris, Troy.

New Recycling Location Established at City Hall The City of Troy has installed a new recycling location on the south parking lot of City Hall at 800 Cap Au Gris. Residents and non-residents are welcome to use the dumpster. Patrons may recycle paper, cardboard boxes, plastic, aluminum and glass items. Christian Environmental Services, the City’s contracted residential trash hauler, asks patrons to rinse recyclable materials before discarding them. Local Man Wins District-Level Speech Contest St. Charles County Toastmasters member Matt Prose knows that preparation and speaking from the heart pay off.

Prose recently won the District 8 Toastmasters International Speech Contest with his speech, “Journey from Silence.” He put in many hours of practice and beat competitors from two states to earn the title.

“In competing I have learned that there are so many layers to improving in public speaking,” Prose said. “It’s not just what you say, but being committed to the art of preparation, delivery and stage presence.”

Prose has been a Toastmasters member for about a year. Toastmasters is an international club that allows members to learn and practice public speaking and leadership skills. For a couple of months before the start of competition, Prose received feedback about the speech from his St. Charles County Toastmasters club members. He tweaked the speech accordingly.

“Winning the district competition was an amazing feeling,” Prose said. “I’m so thankful for all the support I have received from my club and from the district. I am honored to represent District 8 going forward.”

el, Prose competed against other Toastmasters District 8 members. The district includes about the eastern two-thirds of Missouri, and roughly the lower two-thirds of Illinois. Prose now will compete against people around the world at the Toastmasters International Speech Contest in Cincinnati.

“I’m very thankful for this opportunity and can’t wait to see what comes of it!” he said.

First State Bank Advisory Board First State Bank of St. Charles is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Potter and Jennifer Bouquet as the newest members of the Advisory Board for First State Bank.

Mike Potter, former partner at Trabue Industrial Systems in St. Louis, resides in Lake Saint Louis where he previously served as mayor for 12 years. He is acting president of the board for the Lake Saint Louis Community Association.

Potter graduated from the Missouri University of Science and Technology.

Jennifer Bouquet serves as president of J & J Boring, Inc., a company that specializes in boring, tunneling and pipe jacking located in Winfield, Mo. Mike Borgna Named Campaign Chair Mike Borgna, chief financial officer of Data2 Corporation has been named the Tri-County Division of United Way’s 2013 fundraising campaign chair.

The Tri-County Division of United Way covers the Missouri counties of Lincoln, Warren and St. Charles. The annual fundraising campaign, which supports more than 170 local health and human service organizations that annually helps one in three people in the community, will officially begin in September.

Interim Superintendent The Wentzville School District Board of Education has hired Dr. Curtis Cain to serve as interim superintendent for the 2013-14 school year. “We believe Dr. Cain is the right candidate to lead the Wentzville School District during this transitional period,” said Board of Education President Dale Schaper. “We are the fastest growing district in Missouri, and his experience and vision will help the WSD as we continue to grow and increase student achievement.” Dr. Cain takes over on July 1, and will replace Dr. Terry Adams who submitted his resignation in April.

Dr. Cain is currently the Associate Superintendent for Educational Services for the Shawnee Mission School District in Overland Park, KS. He holds a B.S. in Social Science Education from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and a Masters and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Iowa State University.

Dr. Cain served as the Program Manager of the School Improvement Model Center at Iowa State University from 2000 – 2002, and as the Director of Curriculum and Professional Development in the Park Hill School District for six years before accepting his current position with the Shawnee Mission School District in 2008. “I am both thrilled and humbled to be selected as the interim superintendent of the Wentzville School District,” said Dr. Cain. “When I think of great quality and reputation I think of the WSD, and I’m looking forward to this opportunity to continue the proud tradition of educational excellence. I plan on getting to know the students, staff, parents, and stakeholders of the District, and my family and I are also looking forward to being active members of the community.”

Wentzville Bright Flight Scholars The Wentzville School District is proud to announce that 57 seniors have qualified as Missouri “Bright Flight” scholars this year, with 35 recipients from Holt High School and 22 from Timberland High School.

Bright Flight is the Missouri Department of Higher Education (MDHE) academic scholarship program that recognizes the top 5% of the state’s high school seniors as determined by their ACT or SAT composite scores.

“We are very proud of our students, and these individuals have shown that it’s ‘cool’ to take challenging classes,” said Superintendent Dr. Terry Adams.

“We have increased academic rigor and continue to add Advanced Placement classes, and more of our students are benefiting with higher test scores.” This year, a score of 30 or above on the ACT or an SAT score of 770 or above on critical reading and math qualifies a student for Bright Flight. The scholarships can only be used at approved Missouri institutions, and are intended to encourage top-ranked high school seniors to attend college in Missouri.

Gary Baute Soccer Coach Is Honored Again Trinity Catholic High School boys and girls soccer coach Vince Drake has been elected as a co-winner of Soccer Coach Vince Drake the Metro Legends Award from the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame. Drake, a 1964 Mercy High School graduate who has been coaching soccer at St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy and currently Trinity since 1968, will receive the award along with longtime CBC soccer coach Terry Michler. The award will be presented at the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame Enshrinement Dinner November 20 at the Millennium Hotel downtown. Men’s Volleyball Defeats No. 7 Lewis The Lindenwood men’s volleyball team’s victory over No. 7 Lewis has been named No. 9 in the 2012-13 top 10 moments of Lindenwood Athletics.

In its first full season as a member of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, the Lindenwood men’s volleyball team knew that it wanted to exceed expectations that others in the volleyball world had set in place for it. One of those preseason expectations included a seventh-place pick out of eight in the MIVA preseason coaches’ poll, coming just ahead of Quincy in votes.

One of the highlights of the 2013 season that no one other than those on the Lindenwood bench expected in the least was the three-set home victory over No. 7 Lewis on Friday, March 22, marking one of the biggest wins in program history. The Lions won by scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 26-24.

Hackworth had one of the most impressive matches of his sophomore season, concluding the evening with a team-high 18 kills with only four errors at a .389 hitting percentage. Siwicki added nine kills on just 12 attempts, and Adams finished the evening with eight kills, three service aces, and a team-high eight digs.

Not only did Lindenwood shock the volleyball world by picking up its biggest victory in its NCAAera, it also would have earned the fifth seed in the MIVA Championships had it the ability to compete in postseason. Press against the “spines” until you hear a crunch to make it easier to roll.

Directions: Combine lime juice, sesame oil, chile and salt in a medium bowl; set aside.

Robots R Us Stephen Coonts writes of advanced military robots in his book, “Hong Kong.” They’re bipeds about eight feet tall, can run like a deer and shoot built-in weapons including anti-tank rockets and Gatling guns and never miss. They even share information with each other while they do it. Scary?

You bet.

The military is probably already working on this type of robot or at least some high-tech labs are. Perhaps they already have them but it would surely be so secret that even Wikileaks hasn’t heard.

They already use drones with advanced weaponry that are very effective for surveillance and surprise attacks on terrorists’ hideouts and such. The current brouhaha about peacetime use notwithstanding, they could be quite useful if closely monitored.

Being mechanically inclined, human-like robots fascinate me. I can’t help but wonder if some hightech company is working on house-cleaning robots

that can match or beat human beings armed with Lysol and feather dusters. If they made one that was affordable, I’d even trade in my vintage Lionel train set for it.

It’s not that I dislike cleaning help. I don’t. But they’re human and make me feel inadequate. I could never get floors and shower stalls to shine, much less keeping clutter below salvage yard levels. Cleaning people make short work of these chores while I hide in my office and pretend I’m busy. I know if they see me watching, they’ll notice I look like an awestruck twelve-year-old looking at his rich uncle’s Corvette.

To own a robot that can clean my house and mow my yard would be pure delight. I could keep it in the garage or a closet and call it out whenever I spill corn flakes on the floor or drop a fast food burger on the car seat. I could even tell it, “Hurry up and make sure not to leave any crumbs and I’ll buy you a transistor sister to grease your gears.”

Mostly, I wouldn’t feel inadequate in front of cleaning help. A robot wouldn’t care...I hope.

Since the high-tech geniuses are great at inventing machines to destroy enemies or watch them destroy each other, there is no reason to believe they can’t make efficient robots for cleaning duties...even

cleaning windows! I don’t care if they look like metal monsters from Saturday morning cartoons as long as they keep the house cleaned, the lawn mowed, the car washed and the dog from biting the mail carrier. If it talked, I’m sure an anti-nagging control switch could be installed.

Given that some company probably already produces prototypes of said robots, they’ll probably decrease in price through mass production. So why haven’t they produced them, you ask?

It would probably put thousands of cleaning companies and employees out of business, I answer. But that’s a long way off. Right now, big business is too busy putting thousands of manufacturing companies and employees out of business.

Since my dream robots are probably still in the development stage or at least stored in a lab basement somewhere, they’ll be too expensive anyway. I figure the price I would pay for a domestic robot right now would probably take about five-thousand years to justify, but I can still dream about it.

My male chauvinist buddies told me if I got married again, my house would stay clean. Women hate clutter and dirt.

Marry a house cleaner? What woman in her right mind would marry a guy to keep his house clean? I’ll stick to robots, thank you. On the other hand, if Sharon Stone answers my calls...but there I go dreaming again.
