Music Performances by the Band of Mid-America

Business

By Senior Airman Carmen Emborski A group of musicians in the greater St. Louis region gather daily to rehearse the music they’ll be performing, individuals whose collective resume includes educations at NYU, the Juilliard School, Northwestern, and the Cincinnati Conservatory. These musicians have performed for ambassadors, Presidents, royalty, orphans, and veterans of Pearl Harbor and Iwo Jima—in every state and U.S. territory, on Navy ships and via Army helicopters. However, their unifying purpose is not based on individual fame—it’s to show honor, inspire patriotism, and strengthen relationships between the community and the U.S. Air Force. Many members of the 60-piece Band of Mid-America bring a wealth of experience from years of service in one of 12 active-duty national and international regional band locations. They’re professional active duty airmen and a part of the Greater St. Louis community where they perform on a regular basis. Although the band has traditionally performed in a ten-state area of responsibility serving the Midwest, recent sequestration decisions have focused the band’s performance responsibilities to the Greater St. Louis and Southern Illinois regions. The musicians will be performing frequently in this area while assigned to Scott Air Force Base, IL. All Air Force band performances are always free, open to the public, and family-

friendly. The ensembles you can see on a regular basis provide diverse listening options: the traditional Concert Band and Ceremonial Band, two wind quintets Freedom Winds and Midwest Winds, the Shades of Blue jazz ensemble, the brass-heavy rock/pop band Hot Brass, and high-energy rock band Starlifter. The Band of Mid-America has something that will please any music lover. The band even has a selection of smaller ensembles that play Celtic, jazz quartet or individual musician performances. Would you like to have the band entertain guests at your community event for free? Any of the Band of Mid-America’s ensembles may be requested via the Air Force Outreach Request System which can be accessed through their website at www.bandofmidamerica.af.mil. Find the ‘Click Here to Request the Band’ tab on the front page, and you will be on your way to partnering with the band for your next event. In addition to performing live, the Band of Mid-America’s various ensembles regularly record patriotic and troop-inspired materials for you to hear and enjoy at home. The band recently garnered two U.S. Air Force Public Affairs awards for “outstanding recording and outstanding recording of an original work for 2012”. Recordings are available to download for free in full on the

band’s website www.bandofmidamerica. af.mil and are available via links through CD Baby and SoundCloud, or by written request to the Band of Mid-America, Attn: CD Distribution, 900 Chapman Dr., Scott AFB IL 62225. A full description of ensembles and the list of upcoming performance dates are available at www.bandofmidamerica. af.mil. Also, photographs displaying the band’s mission in action as well as reviews are available via the band’s Facebook Page www.facebook.com/BandOfMidAmerica.
