The St. Charles County Fair kicks off on July 28 By Brett Auten There’s still plenty of sizzle left in the summer. While the first weekend in July provided ample opportunities for those of all ages to partake in memorable activities throughout the county, there’s still plenty to do before we reach the start of the school year. The St. Charles County Fair will get rolling on Tuesday, July 28 and run through Saturday, Aug. 1.The fair is in partnership with SSM Healthcare and will be held at Rotary Park in Wentzville. The St. Charles County Fair has been going strong for over 50 years and has been at its current location for 20 years. “It’s family friendly and there is something for everyone,” said Annie Schulte, one of the fair organizers.” Once you are inside the gate everything but the food and beverages are free. There is a wide variety of entertainment. There is always something going on.” New this year will be a kids’ area, provided by local business William Nobbe. “There will be a bounce house, pedal tractors and a big bin full of corn,” Schulte said. Things get started at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when the fair gates open. After the opening ceremony, the petting zoo, butterfly fun house and Candy Land Bounce House and Eurobungee all open up. The carnival rides are free with paid admission (as they are all week). Activities start to heat up around 6 p.m., as the Kolb Exhibition Center features home economics and fine art projects from residents in St. Charles County and adjoining counties. Each qualifying exhibit is judged and awarded premiums. Visitors will be able to view all Open and 4-H exhibits during the week of the county fair. At 6:30 p.m. the MOSAC Antique Tractor Pull starts and magician Steve Corbitt puts on the first of his many shows of the week. The queen coronation and swine judging ramp up before the Glory Days Extreme Extravaganza Rodeo starts at 8:30 p.m. to help close out the opening night. Wednesday through Friday the fair opens at 8 a.m. and on Saturday, things start a little bit earlier at 7:30 a.m. The grounds close at 11:30 p.m Wednesday thru Thursday and 11:59 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The Illinois Tractor Pulling Association claims the main stage on Wednesday while a whole assortment of animal judging will be going on throughout the day. The group Furious George and Bobaloo, a one-man musical comedy act for kids, are also a big part of Wednesday’s activities. Thursday night will feature the Little Mr. & Miss St. Charles County Fair contest, Sammy J Balloon Creations, a 4-H Livestock Auction (including a dog agility show), and the Buskin Bootleggers, a talented string band that features hard hitting banjo, upright bass, mandolin, fiddle, guitar, harmonica, and harmony singing will be on tap beginning at 8 p.m. A highlight of the week will be the tractor pulls (both factory stock and out of field). Things pick up on Friday with jugglers, a tug of war contest, BMX stunt shows and the Xcaliber truck and tractor pull. Lots of old-school kids’ fun can be had during the day Saturday as turtle, frog and sack races are all part of the Saturday afternoon docket. “It’s fun to let them participate and let them just be kids,” Schulte said. As the evening draws to a close, the demolition derby will be a big hit as stock, modified and mini car classes will be available. Also during the intermission there will be a lawnmower derby. “This is one of the largest in the area,” Schulte said. “We don’t hire out, which is rare. We encourage individuals to come in, bring their cars, and try to beat them up.” The daily admission is as follows: Adult Tuesday – Thursday: $10 Adult Friday: $20 Adult Saturday: $20 Children ages 6 – 12 Tues.- Sat.: $5 Children ages 5 and under Tues.- Sat.: free Senior Citizens Day (60 yrs and older) - Wednesday Only: $5 1/2 Price for Military with proper ID – Everyday All tickets include carnival rides, entertainment, and parking. Everyone entering the fairgrounds will be given a pass when they leave thus enabling them to re-enter the fairgrounds that same day without paying admission again.
