Kids get up close with their favorite trucks and other vehicles.

The 7th annual Kids Block Party and Touch-a-Truck is happening at the St. Charles Convention Center on Saturday, August 17 from 10am – 2pm. The free community-wide event, which is open to the public, is set to feature a variety of kids’ favorite trucks, bounce houses, arts and crafts, and games.

Most importantly, attendees will witness a live helicopter landing during the event.

“This unique event is really designed with kids in mind,” said Joe Capitanelli, marketing manager. “The Toucha-Truck component is such a hit that we’ve worked hard with our resources to enhance it this year. We’re expecting around 15 or more vehicles for the kids to be able to interact with.”

Activities confirmed for this year include: • Fire truck and ambulance • SWAT and tactical vehicles provided by the St. Charles County Sheriff ’s Dept.

• Construction and utility vehicles provided by City of St. Charles Public Works Dept.

• Monster trucks from the Land of Giants Truck Club

• Waste truck from Meridian Waste Services • Robotic fun from the River City Robots • Inflatables and bounce houses • Face painting • Photo booth fun • Soccer, Putt Putt, and other sport activities from the Putting Edge and Vetta Sports • Games, arts, and crafts from various vendors While the kids are taking the wheel, the indoor and outdoor event will also feature a variety of informational vendors for parents to learn more about child health, safety, and nutrition from organizations such as St. Louis Children’s Hospital, the YMCA, and Preferred Family Healthcare.

“The event continues to grow. Last year, we had over 3,000 people experience all the Kids Block Party and Touch-a-Truck had to offer,” added Capitanelli.

First Time an Ex-con is Sworn in as an Honorary Police Officer Larry Lawton was once known as one of the biggest jewel robbers in the United States and spent 11 years in some of the toughest federal prisons in the United States. Since his release from Federal prison in 2007, Larry developed the nationally recognized Reality Check Program. He now tells teens and adults how he lost time, his family, friends and his freedom; and that it just wasn’t worth it. Lawton changes the way kids think. It’s all about choices, and Lawton’s passion makes him a leader in the field of helping young people understand that a life of crime is no life at all.

Police Chief Mike Force served 22 years in the United State Marine Corps and has been Chief of Police for the Lake Saint Louis Police Department for the last 21 years. Chief Force along with his Assistant Chief of Police, Chris DiGiuseppi, have teamed up with Lawton to bring his Reality Check Program to the State of Missouri.

On August 16, Larry Lawton will have finally come full circle from Ex-Con to Honorary Police Officer when he becomes an honorary member of the Lake Saint Louis Police Department. Chief Force and Larry will kick start the Reality Check Program beginning in the City of Lake Saint Louis and partnering with the local and state courts. “I’ve spent over 30 years in law enforcement and have seen a great number of cases where our police agencies, courts and prisons are plagued with an ever increasing recidivism rate,” says Force.

“The Reality Check Program fills a void that exists with regards to helping deter young people from entering the system for the first time and gives hope to those who were in a dark place in their life.

Larry Lawton is a man who has turned his life of crime toward a path of doing what’s right and helping others stay out of trouble.”

“When the Chief and I published The Light Bringer, one of the main teaching points of the story was the concept that it’s never too late to change and take the right path by helping others. Larry Lawton is a real-life example of that message,” says DiGiuseppi.

The Reality Check Program is endorsed by Florida’s 17th Lt. Governor Jeff Kottcamp, Congressman Bill Posey, Judges, Law Enforcement Agencies and families throughout the United States. The Reality Check Program is used by The Department of Justice Weed and Seed Program, 18th Judicial Circuit, law enforcement agencies, probation departments and families all over the country. An independent quantitative analysis

by Brevard Community College showed a 90% success rate with keeping teens out of jail, 70% had better attitudes, 43% had better school grades and 31% had better school attendance.

“I’m looking forward to becoming part of the Lake St. Louis Police Department and humbled to be working with all the proud men and woman who serve this great city. To have the chance to help save others from enduring what I had went through in prison is an honor and my true purpose,” said Lawton.

This unlikely partnership between Lawton, Force and DiGiuseppi was forged through a common bond that all three of them have in being published authors and affiliated with the same publisher, HCI Books. Although each started on different sides of the law, their mission is now the same in doing what’s right and helping others in need.

Habitat for Humanity to Host Rummage Sale Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County (HFHSCC) is excited to be hosting its first Rummage Sale on Saturday, September 28 from 9am – 1pm. All proceeds directly benefit HFHSCC which helps families in need of safe, decent and affordable housing.

“How can I help?” you ask. You can get involved in two ways. The first is to put together some of those unwanted treasures you have around the house that you want to sell at the sale or second you can plan to bring your friends and shop the event. Police Ask for Voluntary Compliance with Vehicle Codes “This is a soft approach to code enforcement with the idea that most residents will correct a code violation if they know the law,” said Maj. Jeff Finkelstein. “We don’t want to use the courts to correct the problem if we don’t have to.”

Here are some tips to avoid code violations: Don’t park on your lawn.

Don’t leave derelict (inoperable or abandoned) vehicles at your property.

Don’t park a vehicle so that it blocks a sidewalk.

Park your business vehicle (a car that displays the name, emblem or symbol of a business enterprise) on your driveway, not on the street. Only one business vehicle is permitted per residence.

Follow all of the laws concerning recreational equipment. Recreational Vehicles (RVs), campers, boats and trailers are considered recreational equipment.

Do not store more than one piece of recreational equipment at your home.

Your recreational vehicle is limited to 22 feet in length and 8 feet in width.

Recreational vehicles stored on residential property must be behind all front building lines and must not extend beyond the front of the house.

Park your RV on the street or your driveway in front of your home for no longer than 2 hours while loading/unloading and no more than 10 days per year for seasonal preparation.

St. Peters residents who are storing abandoned vehicles or illegally parking cars such as recreational vehicles or business vehicles may be getting a notification in the mail from the police so that they don’t get a ticket down the road.

Beginning the week of Aug. 12 the St. Peters Police Department will mail notices to homes where police have found violations of City vehicle codes.

The notice will ask for voluntary compliance to avoid consequences.

St. Peters police periodically check St. Peters subdivisions for vehicle code violations such as illegally parked RVs, boats and trailers, business vehicles parked on the street instead of driveways, or the storage of inoperable vehicles at homes. The notice in the mail will warn the homeowner to remove or properly store the vehicle within seven days to avoid a ticket. Police will check the home again to ensure that the violation was corrected.

Program Fraser Leonard Fine Art Gallery announces that the Gallery will be hosting a “Creative Black Tie” event to benefit the A.R.T.C. program at Preferred Family Healthcare. Letter to the Editor: Local Firefighter Helps Haiti

My name is Brian Heppermann, and I am a lifelong resident of Wentzville. I am also a cancer survivor and a firefighter/paramedic for West County EMS and Fire Protection District. Having these experiences has made me passionate to help others and celebrate health by undertaking a 100 mile run to raise $100,000 for the Haitian mission Celebrate Jesus of Haiti.

As firefighters and paramedics, we are taught to use our abilities and training to help other people in their time of need. When people’s situations are at the most desperate point, that’s where we as emergency responders step in.

We use the tools (body, training and equipment) we have been provided with to race in and save someone’s day.

I am taking the things that I have learned from my experience in this field, and I am using them to take the steps to race in and help others. On August 17, I will be taking on the challenge of running the Leadville 100 mile trail race to raise $100,000 for a mission campus in Haiti. This race will cover 100 miles of mountain trails in the extreme Colorado Rockies’ terrain at elevations of 9200-12,600, all to be completed in fewer than 30 hours.

Having traveled to Haiti myself and working at this mission, my life was forever changed. I saw the dire situations that others from this country lived in, and my heart was heavy knowing the things that I took for granted back home. This mission provides school, church, medical/dental clinic, clean water wells, garden acreage, jobs, and a feeding program for over 800 children.

I also want to inspire and encourage others to step out of their comfort zone and attempt something that they never thought possible before. We as a community can reach beyond the borders of our own town and impact more people’s lives than we ever imagined. We as a community can be a force to help change the world. Faith Flannagan, a freshman in high school, will soon begin a service project raising a puppy, Poet, for fifteen months for Companions for Independence (CCI), the largest dog assistance organization in the world.

“I believe I am the first puppy raiser in the Saint Louis area,” Faith says, “and realize I will face many obstacles in obtaining access with the puppy.”

Faith is hoping St. Charles businesses and community organizations will allow her and Poet access to indoor public spaces during his training.

During her time with Poet, Faith will teach him 30 commands, after which he will complete his training at the Dog College at CCI’s Ohio Campus. He will receive six months of Advanced Training where he will learn skills such as turning on/off lights, opening/closing doors, retrieving dropped items, carrying out retail transactions, and pulling a wheelchair. At the end of his formal training he will enter Team Training, an intense two-week selection process where he will be placed with his recipient. The cost of breeding, raising, and training each of these dogs is forty thousand dollars; yet, they are provided free of charge to the graduate.

Also, Faith and Poet will need time alone during their training.

“One critical component to helping Poet realize his potential is for the public to understand he is working when they see him.” If Poet has his cape on, he is working and cannot be petted or played with before asking Faith for permission.

Sikeston Schools Introduces Project iLearn This fall, Sikeston R6 Schools is implementing a 1:1 initiative called Project iLearn. The term “1:1” refers to a plan to provide one mobile computing device (iPad) for every student. According to Sikeston Schools, the goals for this initiative are to increase the technology to which students have access, level the digital playing field for all students and transform the types of learning activities that occur in classrooms.

Project iLearn will begin at the high school campus and spread to other schools as funding allows. As a Project iLearn pioneer, Sikeston Schools will serve as a model for other districts considering a similar change.

Lincoln County Community Donates $2,353 to Missouri Children’s Burn Camp During the past week, the Lincoln County Firefighter’s Foundation held a fundraiser at American Thunder Grill as well as a gun raffle to raise funds for Missouri Children’s Burn Camp.

Today, the Firefighter’s Foundation wrote a $2,353 check for all fundraiser proceeds to Burns Recovered Support Group, a non-profit organization that runs the burn camp.

Lincoln County Fire District 1 appreciates everyone who supported the fundraising efforts and the event sponsors for their donations and support. MoCHIP Child Protection Service Provided Free on August 17 In conjunction with the 5K Roundabout Run the Troy Masonic Lodge will be hosting a Missouri Child Identification Program (MoCHIP) on August 17, 12-6pm at Main St. Elementary School in Troy.

MoCHIP is a c child identification program designed to protect Missouri families if their child ends up missing or abducted. The program uses a computer disk to provide information about the child for his/her parents. The format of the information on the disk is compatible with that of the “AMBER ALERT” program. Data includes digital photographs and fingerprints, physical information, emergency contacts and dental bite impressions/saliva samples. Children are also issued laminated ID cards. There are no microchips used.

The Missouri Masonic Children’s Foundation is working with local Masonic Lodges to provide consistent and comprehensive MoCHIP events entirely free of charge to all families. Any child aged 0-21 from Missouri or a bordering state is eligible. No one in this age group will be turned away.

Advanced Bone & Joint recently hired Dr. Brian Meek to handle the practice’s pain management patients. Meek will focus on a variety of orthopaedic and non-orthopaedic problem areas including cancer-related pain and neuropathy, as well as neck, joint and lower back pain.

Dr. Meek completed both his fellowship in pain management and his anesthesiology residency at Washington University. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Biopsychology degree. He is a published author on the treatment of pain for the elderly.

St. Charles County Collector of Revenue Earns Certificate Michelle McBride, St. Charles County Collector of Revenue, has earned a Chancellor’s Certificate of Public Administration: Finance Master from the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL). The certificate was awarded at the Annual Meeting of the National Association of County Collectors, Treasurers, and Finance Officers (NACCTFO) on July 18. To qualify for the certification, McBride attended at least 100 hours of public administration training through UMSL’s program in Public Policy Administration in partnership with NACCTFO. “I pursued the certificate to enhance my professional knowledge of property tax collections, general management best practices, and human resource laws,” said McBride.

McBride started working in the Collector of Revenue’s office in 2000 and was elected as Collector of Revenue in 2006. She took office March 1, 2007. Assumption School Ribbon Cutting Celebration Assumption Parish School has been rooted in the O’Fallon, community for more than 140 years: First as a log school house in 1871, then as a 3-story school house used from 1876 to the late 1950’s. The current day school, Parish School of Religion, and Youth Ministry, have been using these facilities built as early as the 1950’s to educate our children. A little over a year ago, construction began on a modern school space which was fashioned to accommodate the growing demands of the Parish and to meet the needs and best practices to educate the 21st century child. Construction is nearing completion and we are thrilled to invite the community to celebrate this exciting and historic milestone with us.

Assumption’s New School Building Dedication Mass and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will be held on Sunday August 18. The festivities will begin with a special Mass held in Assumption Church at 12pm.

After mass, all attendees are invited to join in a procession from the Church to the entrance of the new school building where the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will take place. Light refreshments will be served in the gym and all are invited to a selfguided tour of the facility.

CYCLE Delegates Visit Missouri Capitol One hundred three high school students from across Missouri recently participated in the Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (CYCLE) program held July 17-19, in Jefferson City. Local delegates were Alison Boehmer, Elizabeth Citrowske and Lukas Wyant, O’Fallon; Morgan Hawkins, Troy; Arienna Gray, Warrenton, and Taylor Banze, Wentzville. They were sponsored by Cuivre River Electric Cooperative.

The CYCLE program is conducted by the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives (AMEC) and is a recipient of the National Community Youth Service award presented by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association for the top youth program among all electric cooperatives in the country. Since 2004, AMEC has hosted more than 710 high school sophomore and junior students from Missouri’s 47 electric

distribution and transmission cooperatives.

The three-day program provided an actionfilled experience for the students, offering them opportunities to learn first-hand what it’s like to be involved in politics, community service, today’s pressing issues, the cooperative form of business and being a leader. Aloha Chicken Sliders Makes 12 sliders Ingredients: 1 can crushed pineapple 1/4 cup soy sauce 1 clove garlic, minced 1 inch piece ginger, peeled and minced 1 teaspoon sesame oil 3 chicken breasts 2 tablespoon crushed pineapple 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar 3 slices provolone cheese, cut into 4 pieces 12 tomato slices Lettuce King’s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sweet Dinner Rolls Directions: Open pineapple can and reserve two tablespoons for mayo.

Place pineapple, soy sauce, garlic, ginger and sesame oil in ziptop bag and mix well.

Add artichoke hearts, spinach and water chestnuts; mix well. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled. To serve hot: Stir in 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese; microwave on high 4-5 minutes or until hot, stirring occasionally. Transfer dip to bread bowl and serve with toasted bread cubes.

I-170 Extension Dissension After reading about extending I-170 South to I-44, I was once again reminded of the expensive design foolishness and terminus limitations of the Metrolink light rail system. I’ve written about it before, but I’m reminded of it every time I see another adverse result of one of the poorest public transportation systems in the country.

As I pointed out previously, Metrolink’s design and expensive construction was the result of political forces catering to local demands including expensive, vintage, obsolete designs that went out with depression era speakeasies.

When compared to Japan’s inexpensive light rail that travels above the roads and highways instead of on, around or under selected routes, it seems embarrassing. One case in point was the Metrolink along Forest Park Boulevard to Clayton that must have cost enough to build two or three modern overhead light rail systems. The giant excavation costs must have been staggering.

I’ve heard comments many times that we’ve become a spoiled society. We would rather drive in crowded, dangerous and polluted rush hour traffic than ride on public transportation to and from our work places.

I’ll admit that larger cities like Chicago and New York leave little choice. One is forced to ride public transportation because, if for no other reason, there is no place to park. It’s accepted as life-in-the-big-city for the local residents.

The I-170 extension would obviously crash through some of the most expensive and crowded real estate in St. Louis County to make driving to the airport a bit quicker, among other advantages. I’ve driven on nearby Brentwood Boulevard and burned enough gas sitting at traffic lights to drive three times as far on an interstate highway. Yet the people affected by the extension are adamant in their demands to forget the whole idea.

Once again, I’m reminded of the costs of commuting in our personal vehicles as opposed to riding on public transportation. The differences are manifest.

As an example, my old Mustang averages at least 20 mpg in combined city and highway, save trying to accelerate around lane hogs on cell phones. If I drive from say, O’Fallon, to a Market Street address in St. Louis on the 400 block and back, a round trip of about 78 miles at 20 mpg, it would average about $13.65 in gasoline and considerably more in tires, maintenance, vehicle depreciation and stress drugs. Were light rail extended out through St. Charles County and I paid five dollars per trip, I could’ve spent the difference on far better things

like adult boy-toys or spoiling my grandchildren.

I should include the savings in parking fees and tickets in the parking meter capitol of the free world. I’m sometimes convinced St. Louis is paying the salaries of the entire city government from parking meter revenue and ticket fines along with sharing loot from cars towed from expired meters to impound yards of criminal organizations that charge more than an oil company lobbyist to keep them until they’re released.

When light rail was originally voted down in St. Charles County, I couldn’t really blame the voters. The sales tax increase wasn’t welcome. But, I’d like to think the public was wise enough to understand the present Metrolink was a poorly designed, overly expensive example of a people-mover as compared to modern, less expensive light rail systems. What I would rather have voted for was an advanced overhead monorail that crossed the Missouri river and extended at least to Foristell if not further.

Fat chance. Open wallet, buy gas, suffer road rage...
