Kids Block Party is a free community event that encourages healthy lifestyles among children By Brett Auten Childhood obesity, health and awareness are hot button topics and the proof is in, dare we say, the pudding. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years and in 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. On Aug. 29, a fun and fact-filled afternoon with a strong emphasis on a healthy lifestyle for children and adults will be the theme as the 9th annual Kids Block Party returns to the St. Charles Convention Center. The event is free to the community and runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and within that four-hour block the overriding theme will be encouraging healthy, active and safe lifestyles among children (ages 3-10). “This is going to be a fun day with lots to do,” St. Charles Convention Center Marketing Manager Kristen Bowen said. “This is something the family can do together and not cost a thing. There will be different organizations from, in and around St. Charles focusing on a healthy and active lifestyle.” An estimated 25 exhibitors have signed on. Among those expected to be there include: Safety Street, Juice Plus, Little Fishes and Fit for Moms.
Last year, an estimated 2,500 people roamed the convention center. For the kids, there will be plenty to keep them occupied. Along with inflatable slides and bounce house there will be an all-in-one sports arena bounce house that features basketball, soccer and other sports. The kids will also get a chance to participate in Touch a Truck, where a number of different fire, ambulance, emergency relief team vehicles will be there for them to explore. The Land of Giants truck club, a regional club that supports charities in Missouri area, will be showing off their toys, which so happen to be giant lifted trucks. Utopia Entertainment will be providing ample music to get up and dance to along with a special performance from Frozen princess Elsa and Anna and the Fit for Moms will demonstrate a stroller workout any busy parent can partake in. A slew of prizes will be given away throughout the day, including; Perez Chiropractic, Texas Roadhouse, Renaud Spirit Center, a Wish Upon A Star Princess Cupcake Baking Basket, a Disney On Ice Ticket Pack and many more. There will be a concession stand. If you donate one of the following personal care items you will receive a coupon for 10-percent off concessions at the event: shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, body wash, soap, deodorant, floss, or mouthwash. All donations
will be distributed to St. Charles residents in need during the Helping Hands for the Holidays event at the St. Charles Convention Center event in December. “We will be both indoor and outdoor,” Bowen said. “We will have some air conditioned areas. We have a number of people and exhibitors returning along with a lot of new faces. So, if you have been here every year for the past nine years, there are still plenty of fun and worthwhile things going on.” For more information, visit www.stcharlesconventioncenter.com/events/ kidsblockparty
