Charlie is the Official Mascot of the Saint Charles Oktoberfest, taking place September 27 - 29 in Frontier Park in St. Charles.

Charlie gets his name from the Sister Cities partnership between Saint Charles, Missouri, and Ludwigsburg, Germany. The St. Charles Sister Cities Program was incorporated in 1994 to encourage mutual understanding, friendship, and goodwill through cultural, social, business, and educational exchanges between St. Charles and her Sister Cities. The 2013 Parade Grand Marshall is German-American Joe Daues, founder of the Saint Charles Sister Cities program. This year’s McDonald’s Parade on Main begins Saturday morning at 10am sharp on old Main Street.

O’Fallon Police Department K9 Received Donated Kevlar Vest

On Thursday September 12, O’Fallon Police K9 Talos received a custom fitted Kevlar vest from the nonprofit organization Dogs on Duty. K9 Talos and his handler Officer Mike Aronson were on hand at the O’Fallon City Council meeting to receive the vest.

Dogs On Duty is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide support for all working and service dogs. September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Childhood cancer strikes one in every 300 boys and one in every 333 girls before they reach the age of 20. Because of advances in treatments, about 80% of children treated for cancer survive 5 years or more.

As the treatments allow these children to live longer, they can also cause health problems that may not show up until months or even years after treatment. These problems are

called late-effects.

Two-thirds of these survivors will face one or more late-effects from treatment that is classified as severe or life-threatening. These can include heart damage, a second cancer or more, lung damage, infertility, growth deficits, hearing loss and most commonly, cognitive impairments such as attention, memory, producing and understanding, reasoning, problem solving and decision making.

Childhood cancer is for life. It is imperative that all survivors of childhood cancer receive on-going monitoring and continue with physical and psychosocial care throughout their entire lives.

The causes of childhood cancers are largely unknown, and for the most part they cannot be prevented.

You can help us raise awareness for Childhood Cancer in the month of September by wearing gold (shirts on sale at www.leapsoflove.org), replacing your outside lights with a gold light bulbs or displaying a gold ribbon in your window of your car or place of business. To commemorate September 11th, Bugles Across America, a volunteer organization whose members volunteer to sound taps at military funerals as well as other civic events, organized a 9/11 observance and played Taps four times at the exact moment of each attack at numerous locations across the country. Free “Genealogy Detective” Classes Beginning Genealogy will be offered through the Renaud Spirit Center, and taught by members of the Caroline Close Stuart Chapter, NSDAR (National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution) on October 4 and 5 at 2650 Tri Sport Circle, O’Fallon.

The free class on Friday starts at 1pm and Saturday starts at 8:30am and will cover beginning information about how to start a family tree, where to locate documents and how to organize the information collected. The afternoon class held on Saturday begins at 1pm and will go into more in depth information for anyone who has already gotten started but wants to sharpen skills and search like a pro. Each class will end with information on how to become a member of the DAR. DAR Chapter members will also be on hand to help with research road blocks.

Cottle Waddle

The Cottleville Business Association will hold it’s Inaugural Cottle Waddle Event on Saturday, October 5 from 3-7pm which will be followed by Dancing in the Streets from 7 -11pm. Ticket holders must be 21 yrs of age an older and must show ID. The location for this event will run between 5490 5th St and Mannino’s Market, 5205 Highway N in Cottleville.

This is a unique event showcasing St. Charles county’s most eclectic neighborhood, Cottleville. This is an event to promote the Cottleville businesses, the city’s unique setting, vibrancy of Cottleville, and all that it has to offer its friends and customers.

Letter to the Editor As a citizen of St. Charles County and Dardenne Prairie, I am writing your publication for assistance in circulating a concerning issue now facing our community. Recently the residents of BaratHaven subdivision were made aware of an application submitted to the city of Dardenne Prairie for a proposed “high density” apartment complex that would be developed on approximately 11 acres of land at the corner of BaratHaven Boulevard and Technology Drive.

The proposed apartment complex would double the number of families living within our small community and require a zoning change at the site as it is currently zoned for commercial.

My wife and I first moved to Dardenne Prairie in 2001 from the Chicago area. We chose this city for its strong schools, family values, and rural flavor within a suburban setting. In 2006, we watched as BaratHaven was being developed and were drawn to the idea of a “neighbor-

hood within a park.” The thought of having a school, trails, lake and shopping within walking distance was the reason for us to move just two short miles to the BaratHaven community in 2010. My family, along with many others, would certainly have reconsidered this development if there was ever a plan to change the commercial zoning after over ninety percent of the homes are built in order to facilitate ten three-story apartment buildings at the entrance to our subdivision.

The 200-plus households of BaratHaven are forged together against this project and the required zoning change. At a recent homeowner association meeting, the Dardenne Prairie City Hall was packed with nearly 200 concerned residents that unanimously expressed concern. We have contacted our government leaders, established a website, gathered signatures and hired an attorney all in an effort to stop the rezoning and subsequent development.

I hope that this letter will motivate other concerned citizens of Dardenne Prairie to express concern over any rezoning that would alter the original master plan of our city.

Public Encouraged to Vote for Lincoln County AmbuBus via Facebook Lincoln County was one of 25 finalists across the country to be nominated for an AmbuBus Bus Stretcher Conversion Kit from First Line Technology. The conversion kit is a value of $35,000 and having the AmbuBus would help with the transportation of multiple patients during a mass casualty or other no-notice disaster such as an earthquake or tornado.

Since there is only one hospital in Lincoln County, the facility will experience an influx of patients with any major disaster. Receiving the AmbuBus Bus Stretcher Conversion Kit will help emergency personnel be better equipped to respond to a mass casualty.

The public will decide the winning organization by voting on Facebook. Voting is currently underway and ends September 20.

The grand prize winner will be announced on October 1 via email.

Campbell Montessori to Host “The Great Pi Race” Campbell Montessori School is hosting their inaugural 5K fundraiser – entitled “The Great Pi Race” – on Saturday, September 21 beginning at 8:30am at Quail Ridge Park, located at 5501 Quail Ridge Parkway in Wentzville.

With a unique description of “3.14159 miles. It’s no cakewalk,” this 5K race fundraiser will feature races for adults and children alike. Race day will start with the 3.14159 race for teens and adults beginning at 8:30am, followed by the Timed Kids’ Mile for children ages 6-12 at 9:30am. And the 9:35am “Tiny Tikes Dash” will round out the days’ running activities.

Gary Baute Rascal’s Catcher Voted ‘Rookie Of The Year’ And Heading To Da Cubs River City’s catcher Danny Canela has inked a minor league contract by the Chicago Cubs organization. He will be in Arizona for spring training with a Cubs’ minor league affiliate and attempt to make an opening day roster next spring.

Before coming to the Rascals in 2013, Canela spent the bulk of his college career with the North Carolina State Wolfpack of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). In three seasons with the Wolfpack, he blasted 17 home runs.

Just before his senior campaign, he transferred from NC State to Lee University in Tennessee. Canela played in 61 games for the Flames and averaged .335 at the plate including seven homeruns. A native of Pembrook Pines, FL, Canela put up outstanding numbers for the Rascals including 12 home runs, 53 RBI’s, and a .360 batting average in 69 games.

Honorable Behavior Is Taught at Home After reading of a road rage incident that ended with a murder conviction of a young man that shot and killed the driver of another vehicle, I thought of another incident from many years ago.

It was witnessed by a relative visiting Italy. She stood on a street corner and witnessed two vehicles that bumped into each other while turning left. No real harm was done but tempers flared between the two drivers who proceeded to wave their arms and yell at each other for several minutes while a policeman watched. Just as rapidly as it started, it stopped. Both parties threw up their arms, got back in their cars and drove away, obviously feeling better after venting their ire.

I love the Italians in the respect that they are quick to anger, yet they are just as quick to calm down and go on about their business. This couldn’t be better demonstrated in the movie, Moon Struck where an Italian-American family solved their differences in

spite of real animosity and remained a loving family.

Whatever happened to this type of anger management? People are now even shooting each other because of incidents that have no more relevance than accidently bumping someone in a checkout line.

When I was a young man, we sometimes settled arguments and flaring tempers by fisticuffs. It never really proved anything, but our wounded pride was sometimes offset by our wounded nose. In any event, it was one-on-one, and there was a sense of fairness in spite of flaring tempers. We felt that ganging up on one person was cowardly, just as is using guns, knives, clubs, brass knuckles and any other weapons in a confrontation.

We usually learned these things mostly from our fathers and mothers, many of which believed in honor among humankind. I’m afraid that isn’t happening these days with gang violence that ranges from depressed neighborhoods over to modern suburban neighborhoods that also have street gangs although many people can’t or won’t believe it.

We also have female street gangs who may be even more dishonorable and dangerous.

I’m of the opinion that since parents aren’t as available to their offspring as they

once were, we should lower the age of juvenile protections from adult punishment from 18 to 16. Much of the criminal element that ends up in courtrooms and prisons began during the early teens or before. By the time they faced adult punishments, many youngsters had already attained a police record, sometimes quite long. In other words, their parents didn’t teach them how to act for assorted reasons.

One of my acquaintances believes parents should suffer the same punishments as their offspring. I’m not so sure this will solve anything, but you can see the thinking and anger of citizens being victimized by these young criminals. I sometimes wonder when this whole thing will explode into vigilante actions which never really solve anything and in fact, usually harm the wrong people.

An 18-year-old or older gang member usually gives his stolen gun to a juvenile member to hold for him or even use to commit murder because the punishment is much less. They’ll still do it if the age is lowered to 16, but the increase of murderers in street gangs being sent to prison will surely help everyone.

Most fathers and mothers of my youth taught their children honor. No one else can teach it as well.

They considered it their job. It still is, but the fact remains, many aren’t doing it. We need to change the rules.
