O’Fallon Getting Set To Make the City Shine How much difference can one day make? Plenty in the City of O’Fallon, where 235 kids, teenagers and adults have signed on to break out the rakes, shovels and gloves for a morning of community service on National Make A Difference Day, Saturday, October 26. “National Make A Difference Day is the largest day of community service, and millions of people all over the globe will be tackling projects to make their community a better place,” said Kathy Halstead, O’Fallon’s Volunteer Services Manager. “We design our projects for all ages and for groups of all sizes.” Currently, participants who have registered include the Fort Zumwalt South Middle School StuCO and TREND students, Adopt-A-Street members, scout troops, church groups, several families and individuals. Teams will be installing holiday lights around the playground and historic Heald Home in Fort Zumwalt Park for the Celebration of Lights. Others will be tidying and mulching park landscaping and flower beds, putting a shine on City monuments and making a clean sweep of assigned areas in City parks, along roadsides and creeks. But there’s still room for more. “We’re in need of volunteers to focus on cleaning up several creeks that have been identified by our City’s Stormwater Coordinator as in need of attention,” said Halstead. “Creek cleanups are vital to keeping debris from washing downstream where it could harm plants and wildlife, and helping to
maintain cleaner water and green space.” Kids as young as five years old have participated in O’Fallon’s creek cleanups. When the morning is over and the debris is piled high for pickup, kids proudly pose for a photo. “Kids, especially love to get outside and help, and it gives them a sense of accomplishment,” said Halstead. “They can see that they’ve made a difference.” Families looking for more opportunities to volunteer this fall are encouraged to sign up for National Family Volunteer Day, which will be held on Saturday, November 16. “Families are invited to spend the morning working together on community goals,” said Halstead. “Donations to the Cornucopia of Care Food Drive will need to be sorted, boxed and distributed to local food pantries. Additional projects may be developed as registration increases. We pre-register our volunteers so that we can make sure that our projects have all the supplies needed for volunteers to pitch in.” To join in O’Fallon’s Make A Difference Day or register for National Family Volunteer Day, contact O’Fallon’s Volunteer Services Department at 636.379.5507 or volunteer@ofallon. mo.us.
