By Amanda Bretz Monday, November 11 is Veterans Day, and there are numerous celebrations throughout the St. Charles County area to honor all who have served our country.

City of O’Fallon Veterans Day Ceremony The public is invited to attend O’Fallon’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony, which will begin at 11am on November 11, at O’Fallon Veterans Memorial Walk, 800 Belleau Creek Road in O’Fallon. The ceremony, which has been planned by the O’Fallon Veterans Commission in honor of all U.S. veterans, includes a keynote speaker with welcoming remarks delivered by Mayor Bill Hennessy. Local students will read original essays submitted to the VFW’s annual “The Voice of Democracy” and “The Patriot’s Pen” contests. Veterans Memorabilia Exhibit at Heald Home A special exhibit of medals, uniforms, and memorabilia by members of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 458 will be on display throughout the Heald Home in Fort Zumwalt Park.

Visitors can chat with veterans and thank them for serving our country.

Veterans Tribute at Duchesne High School Duchesne High School alum, Retired Rear Admiral, and local author Jack Zerr will offer a tribute to veterans.

Zerr will be selling copies of his newest book,Noble Deeds. All proceeds from sales will benefit the high school. The event will take place November 11, at 7pm at Duchesne High School Library, 2550 Elm St. in St. Charles.

St. Charles Veterans Day Program The St. Charles County Veterans Committee and St. Charles City Veterans Commission will host their annual Veterans Day Program on November 11 at 1:30pm, on the grounds of St. Charles County’s Historic Courthouse at 100 N. Third St. in St. Charles. The event is free and open to the public.

Master of Ceremonies Jerry Bradley of Marine Corps League Detachment 525 will lead the program. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs as seating is limited. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at the St. Charles County Administration Building at 201 N. Second St., Room 115/116 in St. Charles. The makeover began in April and is near completion. Sled Hockey Team Training Camp The Disabled Athlete Sports Association (DASA) will be hosting the 2014 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team for their final training camp before the 2014 Sochi Paralympic Games at the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville November 7-9. DASA would like to invite everyone to fill the stands for Team USA’s final practice on November 9 from 3:30-5pm and cheer them on to their “Road to Sochi.” There is free admission, and it is open to public. There will be food trucks on site.

Following the practice, DASA and the St. Louis Sled Hockey Blues will be hosting their annual Learn to Skate event for local disabled athletes.

The U.S. team will be defending their Gold Medal performance at the 2010 Vancouver Games in which they boasted an undefeated record. The 2014 roster will include Josh Pauls and Steve Cash, members of the 2-time National Champion DASA Blues Sled Hockey Team. Cash is a native of the St. Louis Area, and posted an outstanding performance in the 2010 Vancouver Games, shutting out every team he faced. Both players have been named “Ones to Watch” for the upcoming Sochi games.

DASA will be hosting the Learn to Skate event with assistance from the U.S. Paralympics. U.S. Paralympics has selected St. Louis as a “Gateway to Gold” city, and will be using DASA’s annual Learn to Skate, as well as an added Biathlon Experience simulation for the event. Gateway to Gold is a talent identification campaign implemented in select cities throughout the U.S in an effort to build and sustain a pipeline for Paralympic athletes nationwide.

DASA is a non-profit dedicated to “Breaking Boundaries and Building Victories” for those with physical, visual, and hearing disabilities by offering and promoting adaptive sports and sports programs in the St. Louis metro area. DASA has helped groom champions and record breakers on the National and International levels.

DASA is also the only recognized Paralympic Sport Club in the area.

The Kiwanis Club of Harvester supports the efforts, through donations, of six Project Graduation parents’ groups raising funds for the all night programs to be held after 2014 graduation exercises. High schools include Fort Zumwalt East, Francis Howell North, Francis Central, Orchard Farm, Lutheran High School of St. Charles County, and Francis Howell High School Representatives of the latter two schools’ parents groups were unable to attend the October 23 luncheon meeting at Fratelli’s Ristorante. Volunteers Celebrate Veterans For the past eight years, a group of quilters have met weekly at the O’Fallon Family YMCA to create quilts and donate them to various charities. Recently, Carla Barnhart and Barbara Rhoades, members of the O’Fallon Y, created a patriotic quilt to honor veterans.

The quilt took them more than 125 hours to assemble. They also created three matching pillows to complete the set. “My father served in World War II,” said Barnhart. “I wish he was here today to see the quilt. Making it made me feel very patriotic as I thought about all the people who serve and have served our country.” All branches of service are embroidered on the quilt.

The O’Fallon Y is displaying the quilt and pillows in its lobby and selling raffle chances for them. All proceeds will benefit The Wounded Warrior, an organization committed to raising awareness for and enlisting the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members. Raffle chances are $5 each or 3 for $10. The winner will be drawn at the Y’s Veterans Day breakfast on November 11. (The event is free and open to the public. Reservations must be made by calling the O’Fallon Y at 636.379.0092 by November 6.)

Kind Hearted Women All day Monday-Friday, November 18-22 In a special two-part series, acclaimed filmmaker David Sutherland creates an unforgettable portrait of Robin Charboneau, a 32-year-old divorced single mother, and Oglala Sioux women living on North Dakota’s Spirit Lake Reservation. Sutherland follows Robin over three years as she struggles to raise her two children, further her education and heal herself from the wounds of sexual abuse she suffered as a child. Because of the length of the documentary, Kind Hearted Women will run in the Social Science Building Lounge in a continuous loop.

Members of the Caroline Close Stuart Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) are teaming up with the USO of Missouri, Lambert International Airport. The Chapter found out about a need through several of the members who volunteer at the USO on a regular basis.

The USO presents bags containing new books and a small stuffed animal to US Military dependents toddler to age 10.

These young dependents are at the airport to welcome home or say goodbye to a deployed US Military family member or are traveling with their parents to another duty station.

A nonprofit, congressionally chartered, private organization, the USO relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to support its activities. The USO is not part of the U.S. government, but is recognized by the Department of Defense, Congress and President of the United States, who serves as Honorary Chairman of the USO. Members of the Chapter collected over 80 new books and new stuffed animals under the leadership of the Literacy Chairman, Lauri Henry. Valued at over $900 the Chapter welcomes donations to this worthy project.

On Thursday, November 21, the Troy Chamber of Commerce will host the Second Annual Interview Day at New Horizons High School in Troy. Volunteers are needed to help Chamber members assist the students with mock interviews as part of their career planning curriculum. A graduation ceremony was held recently at Lincoln County Fairgrounds for students and their family. Firefighters from many Lincoln County Fire Districts attended well over 300 hours of classroom and hands-on practical training over the course of several months.

Local Auto Repair Shop Steps Up for the Community Autotech Auto Center located in O’Fallon, along with 19 other local area Napa Auto Care Centers, donated a combined total of $10,000 in automotive repair and services to local deserving recipients. The Napa Auto Care Centers were from the St. Louis Bi-state area, and along with Napa Parts Stores, and Race Car Driver Ron Kapps, all pulled together to make this a rewarding effort.

Autotech chose local resident Shannon Schaper to receive $500 in automotive repairs and were really happy to be able to do this. The effort was named “Napa Auto Care Cares,” and was a great example of many people pulling

together to make a positive difference. “All of us at Autotech consider ourselves lucky to have been able to participate in such a great event. We love this community and are happy to be able to help where we can.” said Barb Kinder, Owner of Autotech Auto Center.

Promotion Profile: New Restaurant Pairs Barbecue with Blues BBQ Blues Smokehouse in Dardenne Prairie is dishing up delicious, flavorful barbecue and serving it with down home side dishes and a dash of the blues.

This brand new eatery opened in October and is open for lunch and dinner.

Owner Keith Inge said even though the restaurant is new, they’ve already started gaining a repeat customer base.

“After the first bite, they’re sold. We’ve already had people that have started to come here two to three times a week,” Inge said.

In addition to the food, the restaurant also offers entertainment in an upscale atmosphere. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the establishment features live blues music. Photos of blues greats, like B.B. King, grace the walls, and mahogany wood accent pieces complete the unique interior.

“Our tagline says it all: ‘Come for the barbecue, stay for the blues.’”

The eatery dishes up St. Louis-style barbecue, which according to Inge, is somewhat of a lost art.

“The era has slipped a little, but St. Louis is the only city in the U.S. that has a particular type of cut spare ribs.”

Besides serving the cut of spare ribs, St. Louisstyle barbecue is also marked by a sweet, tomatobased sauce, which compliments the smokey flavor of the meat perfectly. Keeping with the local barbecue practice, BBQ Blues Smokehouse has a selection of sauces, including a hot and a more traditional St. Louis-style sweet.

The menu features barbecue basics like ribs, pulled pork and brisket. Smoked chicken, sausage hot links, and smoked and fried catfish are also offered.

The eatery serves up sides such as potato salad, baked beans, cole slaw and corn bread muffins to accompany the flavorful meats. A selection of soft drinks is available, and beer and wine selections will be available soon.

THE STORY: The scene is a motel outside of Boston: a depersonalized, antiseptic environment into which, one after the other, come five sets of travelers. Although the various occupants of the motel room are often on stage at the same time, they neither see nor hear each other, and it is quickly evident that their shared location is, in reality, five different rooms. But, as each of the individual dramatic situations is developed, the irony, humor and pathos which they evoke is heightened by the silent proximity of the other characters—building, in the end, to a kaleidoscopic pattern in which their separate stories blend and re-blend into a subtle but telling indictment of the shortcomings, large and small, of life in contemporary America.

Duello Elementary Teacher Named MAEA Art Educator of the Year Duello Elementary art teacher Hester Menier has been named the 2014 Missouri Art Education Association (MAEA) Elementary Art Educator of the Year.

The award is presented annually to recognize the efforts of teachers that have contributed significantly to art education in Missouri. Key criteria for the award include commitment, activities involvement, honors and service, publications and/or exhibits, and outstanding teaching related contributions and services.

Menier has taught in the Wentzville School District Hester Menier in her art classroom with kindergarten students since 1999 and has been the art teacher at Duello since it opened in 2007. She has twice been selected as a building “Teacher of the Year”, and in 2010 she was the first teacher in the District to achieve National Board Certification. Fellow teachers describe her as someone eager to go beyond what is expected in the classroom, and an educator who loves working with children as much as they love working with her.

The award will be officially presented at the MAEA Spring Conference March 12-15 in Jefferson City.

LU Receives Higher Learning Commission Approval for RN-BSN Program Lindenwood University has received approval from the Higher Learning Commission to offer an RN-to-BSN degree completion program in its new School of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, based at the its facility in Dardenne Prairie.

The degree allows current registered nurses to complete a bachelor’s degree in nursing in about two years. Increasingly, hospitals are requiring fouryear degrees from nursing candidates, according to industry sources. The new degree program is available immediately.

al from the university’s regional accreditor to offer a post-licensure Bachelor of Science degree in nursing allows the university to offer the coursework required for licensed nurses to earn their BSNs, a step desired/required by many healthcare institutions.

Dr. Peggy Ellis, dean of the School of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, said the school has 18 nursing students in its first semester. The university’s Center for Nursing and Allied Health is located in Dardenne Prairie at the former site of Barat Academy, which was purchased by the university in September 2012 and has undergone renovation prior to the start of the fall 2013 semester.

Evans said the university also plans to offer a master’s in nursing and programs in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and emergency medical technician.

He said others are also being considered conceptually.

Congratulations to the Francis Howell High School Choir students who were recently selected for the Metro 8 District Honors Choir.

Nearly 300 students auditioned across the Metro 8 District and approximately 150 were selected to participate in this year’s Honors Choir, which took place on Saturday, October 12 at De Smet Jesuit High School. Fourteen Francis Howell High School choir students were selected out of the 21 total that auditioned this year.

Gary Baute Professional Indoor Soccer The Family Arena will be the home of the St. Louis Ambush, marking the return of professional indoor soccer in St. Louis. The team will play a 23-game schedule comprised of 13 home games and 10 road games. The 13-game home schedule will feature 10 regulation MISL games and three “Friendlies.”

The schedule kicks off Friday, November 22 when the MISL’s other expansion team, the Pennsylvania Roar, invade the Family Arena for a 7:35pm kick-off. The final regular season game is slated for March 1 against the Wave in Milwaukee.

Second string quarterback Kellen Clemens, in the game replacing Sam Bradford who is out with a season-ending injury, threw the ball well, completing 20 of 35 passes and one touchdown.

The problem was that Clemens fumbled the ball three times; that helped the Titans put points on the board.

A highlight did include the team running the ball for the second week in a row successfully. Running back Zac Stacy had his second 100 plus rushing game.

He was given the ball 27 times racking up 127 yards.

He’s the student no one notices — the shy kid who does his work and doesn’t whine or joke around. Brian is The Invisible Boy in a sweet new book by Trudy Ludwig, with whimsical illustrations by one of Newsbee’s favorite artists, Patrice Barton.

While Nathan and Sophie require a lot of their teacher’s time and energy, Brian doesn’t. He’s quiet and studious, spending most hours alone, inside and on the playground drawing dragons, castles and superheroes to the rescue.

When a new boy named Justin comes to class, it appears Brian is going to be rescued too. Justin relishes his new friend’s artistic abilities. It seems Brian has a soul mate, someone to buffer his loneliness. But his happiness is short-lived. The bond between Brian and Justin becomes frayed when another classmate lays claim to Justin’s attention.

Even though the cooler weather has arrived, you can still enjoy mouth-watering peaches, juicy tomatoes and sweet corn—all your summer favorites—thanks to the can. Fruits and vegetables are picked at the peak of their ripeness, when they’re at their best, and canned just hours after picking. The canning process, therefore, locks in their nutrients, freshness and flavor naturally, without the need for preservatives.

Pineapple-Peach-Pear Skillet Crisp Makes 8 servings

Slowly add evaporated milk, stirring until smooth. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 to 3 minutes or until mixture begins to thicken slightly. Pour over pasta in pot. Add sausage and reserved pasta cooking water; stir well.

Spread half of pasta mixture into prepared baking dish. Top with spinach. Cover with remaining pasta mixture. Lightly spray piece of foil with nonstick cooking spray. Cover ziti with foil, greased side down.

Bake for 20 minutes or until heated through. Combine mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses in small bowl. Remove foil; sprinkle with cheese mixture. Bake, uncovered, for an additional 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Toasted Almond Green Beans Makes 6 servings Ingredients: 3/4 cup (3 ounces) slivered almonds 3 tablespoons butter, divided 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon cumin 2 cans (14.5 ounces each) Del Monte Cut Green Beans, drained Salt and pepper, to taste Directions: Heat large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add almonds; cook 2 to 3 minutes or until browned, stirring frequently, being careful not to burn. Add 2 tablespoons butter, Worcestershire, lemon juice and cumin.

Cook until butter has melted, stirring constantly. Set almonds aside on separate plate.

Melt remaining butter in same skillet over medium-high heat. Add beans, and cook 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; season with salt and pepper, if desired.

Sprinkle almond mixture over beans. Toss and let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Ingredients: Topping 4 ounces (1 cup) chopped pecans 1/3 cup butter 24 gingersnap cookies, coarsely crushed Base 1 can (20 ounces) Del Monte Pineapple Tidbits or Chunks, undrained 1 can (15.25 ounces) Del Monte Yellow Cling Sliced Peaches in Heavy Syrup, drained 1 can (15.25 ounces) Del Monte Sliced Pears in Heavy Syrup, drained 1/2 cup dried cranberries or raisins 1/3 cup sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch salt, to taste

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional Directions: Heat large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add pecans and cook 2 to 3 minutes or until lightly browned, stirring frequently.

Add butter and stir until melted. Remove from heat, stir in cookie crumbs until well coated with butter and set aside on separate plate.

Combine pineapple, peaches, pears, cranberries, sugar, cornstarch, and salt, if desired, in same skillet. Bring to full boil over medium-high heat. Boil 2 minutes or until thickened, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla, if desired, and sprinkle evenly with cookie mixture. Serve immediately or at room temperature.

Was The American Dream Only Fantasy?

I asked an insider about the salary of the CEO of a wellknown hospital corporation. I was curious because I was being billed for large amounts above and beyond the tens of thousands paid by health insurance. He said, “He only gets a million dollars a year, and it’s too bad. He should be making much more.”

Only?

After reading about eight-digit salaries of many other CEO’s, he may be right. For instance, after watching a network TV morning news station with more advertisements than news, I looked up their CEO’s 2012 salary. He was paid $62,000,000 plus fringe, perks, and who knows what else. Private jet transportation was only one. When you compare this with a million, it does seem paltry.

However, it makes me wonder what our world has come to when we shrug off the term, “Only a million dollars a year.” This seems to be an acceptable attitude

aided and abetted by a majority of our elected representatives in Washington D.C. whose idea of helping our country is making themselves wealthy and their wealthy supporters wealthier. Since the top 10% of richest households now represent just under half of all income in 2012, it might be a clue. Add the huge costs a Congressional campaign, we have a clearer picture of the largest democracy challenge we’ve ever encountered. To get that kind of campaign funding requires kowtowing to a class of private interests with billions to get what they want…and they’ve been getting it.

An obvious comparison of income expectations running amok are salaries of baseball players. Stan Musial was paid $100,000 in 1958. It was the highest he ever earned. Using the most conservative inflation calculator, this figures out to $809,262.98 in 2013. Other calculators are significantly higher. By comparison, Matt Holliday is paid $17,000,000 per year.

My parents relied on my father’s income to survive.

He was glad to make enough to see us through. We didn’t have or expect four-plus bedroom luxury homes with two cars and a boat in a three-car garage. Even the town’s wealthiest citizens didn’t expect that.

If any of those wealthy folks from that era would’ve encountered hedge fund operators or bungling bankers with seven or eight digit

salaries, they may have been horrified.

Since then, our somewhat corrupted free enterprise system has produced corporate executives with the scruples of hyenas. It appears they have no limits to the acquisition of personal wealth and more wealth no matter who or what it hurts.

Perhaps that hospital corporation’s CEO who is paid only a million per year is an exception. It’s possible he really is devoted to his calling and is trying to make things better. I would like to believe it. However it’s hard to get around the national income expectation phenomenon.

Unfortunately, it appears to include a large number of two-income families before the worst national economic policy in U.S. history finally crashed and burned. I spoke with one couple who lost their jobs and their home.

The husband, who is collecting unemployment benefits, joined the Tea Party and blamed the crash on welfare cheaters and the current president. He wouldn’t say what happened to the half million or more per year he made selling first- and second-home mortgages…and therein lies the rub. It appears those CEO’s weren’t the only ones trying to live like Pharaohs. Perhaps that halfmillion dollar earner pretended it was 62 million with private jet transportation.
