Wentzville Author and Photographer Wins Award from Missouri Humanities Council Wentzville resident, Sheree K. Nielsen, an award-winning writer, poet and photographer, recently won first place for photography for Dear Kindred Spirit from the Missouri Humanities Council and the Warrior Arts Alliance. The photograph is featured in Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors Volume 2. She also received a cash prize. The photo tells the story of her husband, Russell Nielsen, an Air Force veteran, penning his thoughts in one of many journals kept safe by the Kindred Spirit mailbox on Bird Island, North Carolina. Russell said, “I thought of all the veterans that served our great nation, and all the people touched by this special place.” An anonymous originator, more than 40 years ago placed the box and mailbox for passersby to leave
their thoughts and prayers. Sheree, with 50+ writing and 100+ photography publications, freelances for Missouri Life, AAA Midwest Traveler and AAA Southern Traveler, among others. She’s collaborating with her husband on a ‘healing’ photography and poetry book, Folly Beach Dances, due out late January 2014. Literary interpretations from award-winning women authors, including the couple, fill the book’s lyrical pages. Diagnosed with lymphoma last summer Sheree plans to donate a portion of the proceeds to LLS. Dear Kindred Spirit is currently on display at the St. Peters Cultural Art Center’s newest exhibition.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire photo courtesy of Lionsgate Films
By Steve Bryan - Rated: PG-13
actions during the 74th Hunger Games. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson seem more at ease with their characters in Catching Fire as well. Though Katniss has feeling for her friend Gale, her affection for Peeta grows despite her protests. Inside the arena, when she thinks he’s dead, Katniss shows how much she really cares for the good-hearted baker’s son. The only really flaw here involves the former winners of the Hunger Games. Though Sam Clafin does a great job as beloved tribute Finnick Odair, other characters barely get any screen time. The wonderful Amanda Plummer is the perfect fit for the eccentric Wiress, but she doesn’t get a chance to shine. The same goes for her bespectacled partner Beetee (Jeffrey Wright). Fortunately, Jena Malone dominates the story as Johanna Mason, the openly defiant tribute. The government destroyed everyone and everything she loves, so Johanna literally dares President Snow to kill her. Malone, a former child actor, handles her character with the strength and grace she so richly deserves.
Adapting a beloved book for the big screen is a daunting task, but Francis Lawrence makes it look easy in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The darker second installment of Suzanne Collins’ popular trilogy features more characters and political intrigue than the original novel, yet director Lawrence does an exceptional job with the material. The story opens with Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) settling into life as a Hunger Games victor. Though she has a beautiful home and more money than she knows what to do with, her private life is no longer her own. As Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson), her drunken mentor, points out, the games don’t stop once you leave the arena. President Snow (Donald www.cupcake-amore.com Sutherland) also isn’t happy with Katniss’ open defiance in the games. To keep her family safe, she must pretend to love Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) although she has feelings for her best friend Gale (Liam Hemsworth). To make matters worse, Katniss must fight for her life once again in the arena. Director Francis Lawrence packs a lot of material into 146 minutes, making Catching Fire an enjoyable experience, especially for fans of the novel. The second book is a real game changer, showing how the 12 districts are ready to revolt thanks to Katniss’
Francis Lawrence and most of his Catching Fire cast are reuniting for the two-part Mockingjay finale. If the third and fourth movies are half as good as this one, the big screen Hunger Games franchise will finish with a flourish. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some frightening images, thematic elements, a suggestive situation, and language, currently is playing in local theaters. Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

“The Christmas Wish”
Thoughtful Anja does for others, but has a dream of her own in The Christmas Wish, a sweet story by Lori Evert, with gorgeous photographs by Per Breiehagen. What Anja wants most is to meet Santa at the North Pole. She pines for her heart’s desire, from morning to night. But before she leaves she has some things to do for “an old woman who lives down the lane.” Anja’s wish to be one of Santa’s elves requires a cross-country trip through the wilderness, and as she sets off her courage wanes, like a candle buffeted by the wind. “What if I get lost,” she wonders . . . Her doubt is quieted when a flitting red bird lights on her ski pole offering his assistance. The winged wonder is just one of the woodland creatures that comes to the child’s aid in a tale sure to warm the heart on long winter nights. Curl up with this marvelous book that reminds us to “Be brave. Be kind. Believe.”

my thoughts came later in life after I read several accounts. I often mocked that Lee Harvey Oswald had invented a new bullet that made 90° turns. Before Kennedy took office, outgoing president Dwight Eisenhower warned us to beware of the military/industrial complex becoming too powerful. Unfortunately, it went unheeded. The Viet Nam war may have been proof. While over 50,000 American soldiers died and another quarter million were injured, many of them permanently, a handful of wealthy people became wealthier. Hindsight makes me believe the excuses given by the White House for wars have been pure fabrication from the Korean conflict until the present. When considering the billions of tax dollars spent for these wars, the military/industrial complex that made billions from them and the questionable excuses and outcomes, it’s no wonder so many US citizens smell rats in our government. “In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military/industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.” -Dwight D Eisenhower (1961)
