Pat Watson from Airline Park joined the Northwest Chamber of Commerce in 1985. Who would have thought that she would have so many titles and be called so many things over the next 27 years? Some were official titles: chamber member, committee member, board member, and executive board member. Some were adjectives: fun, generous, hard worker, and (my personal favorite) crazy old lady. The one that most people recognize is “Queen of the 50/50 Drawing.” Pat took over the 50/50 raffle at our monthly meetings a little more than 20 years ago.
Pat has missed very few meetings in all these years, and she has harassed people every month for more than 225 months to buy her raffle tickets. Knowing that the proceeds go back to the chamber and to the scholarship fund gives her the fuel she needs to be relentless and make sure that nobody gets by without buying. The fact that her personality is some kind of wonderful and she does it effortlessly and with a smile has earned her the “queen” title, and she wears it proudly. Last year, Pat was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at our Annual
Meeting, and her only comment was “But I’m not dead yet!” This year we wanted to honor her and not have her complain about still being alive, so on December 7, 2012 the chamber held “Pat Watson Family Night” at Hazelwood Bowl. There were 126 people who came out to have a great time as we combined different kinds of crazy bowling games, food and drink specials, sang karaoke, and of course, held 50/50 drawings. The fact that we were able to raise more than $2000 for our scholarship fund while honoring our “queen” only made Pat Watson Night that much more special.
Casino Night Date is Announced The Northwest Chamber of Commerce wants you to mark your calendars, and tell all of your friends and family to do the same. the 2013 Casino Night will be Friday, March 1. This event has been going on for more than 20 years, and you definitely don’t want to miss it – the best casino night in town!

New Chamber Office Under Construction
Congratulations to 2013 Executive Board and Board of Directors The Northwest Chamber of Commerce recently held its elections for new board directors and selection of new officers for 2013. We are proud to announce the following chamber members have been installed for terms beginning in 2013.
2013 EXECUTIVE BOARD Chairman of the Board – Steve Hewkin, Hewkin Auto Body
VC – Community Development – Dr. Mike
Northwest Chamber is very excited to announce the location of its new office. The NWCC has been located on the second floor of St. Johns Bank and Trust in Bridgeton for more than 15 years. The bank has been such a great host and landlord for the chamber, but they’ve outgrown the space and need more room. NWCC is heading six miles east on St. Charles Rock Road to the city of St. John Municipal Building. The new address will be 8944 St. Charles Rock Road, St. John, MO 63114. One of the things NWCC is most excited about with the new space is the “drop-in” office. As the chamber has grown, new members have come from South County, West County, downtown, Chesterfield, St. Peters and other “non-northwest” areas. At the new location there will be a drop- in office with Wi-Fi available for chamber members whose offices may be too far away. There will be no cost to use the space; it is just another added service for Northwest County Chamber members. There will also be a 20’x25’ board room available if larger space is needed. The St. John Police Department is on the first floor, the St. John Municipal Court is on the second floor, and the chamber will be on the third floor. Please come by and visit when you have a chance.
Ribbon Cuttings Still Going Strong The Northwest Chamber of Commerce ambassadors, board members, and members continue to come out in full force to support our members at ribbon cuttings for new businesses and special occasions. Team Central Gymnastics Academy celebrates 20 years in business.

North County, Inc. Celebrates a Year of Outstanding Accomplishments It was a productive year for NCI, with significant accomplishments in the areas of economic development, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and marketing/events. “This has been a remarkable year,” said President and CEO Rebecca Zoll. “Through membership in North County Inc. companies, cities, civic and charitable organizations and area residents have the opportunity to participate in an organization that is working hard on behalf of the entire North St. Louis County to build a stronger, more sustainable community.” Promoting economic development is one of NCI’s primary missions. In 2012, the organization launched a new Business Retention Program with assistance from Ameren Missouri, completed a year-long research project on the Business Climate of North County with the Public Policy Research Center, supported incentives to enhance the region’s international cargo and global competitiveness, and developed a North County Economic Profile that showcases the positive business climate and quality of life in the community. NCI also supported protecting proven, performancebased tax credits that leverage private investment and stimulate employment and economic growth for the region. The infrastructure of North St. Louis County also continues to improve thanks to the efforts of NCI. The organization served as an advocate for equitable transportation and infrastructure funding and maintenance, served on the CAG for the Northwest Parkway Study by St. Louis County, MoDOT’s Blanchette Bridge and I-270 Corridor Studies, and testified before the Blue Ribbon Citizens Committee on MO Transportation needs about local community concerns and funding needs. NCI
also
continued
collaboration
on a “Great Streets” project with the Normandy, UMSL and East-West Gateway to complete the conceptual design and began working with MoDOT on engineering design for transportation improvements along the Natural Bridge Road corridor. Education accomplishments for 2012 include the launch of the North County Education Excellence initiative to promote and highlight the positive achievements of our local schools, students and faculty. NCI also supported the local autonomy of school districts and legislation to improve the budgets for the University of Missouri-St. Louis and St. Louis Community College’s work-force development programs and opposed legislative efforts to impose new restrictions upon the authority of local districts. NCI also continued to participate in the St. Louis School/ Business Partnership. NCI’s accomplishments in the area of healthcare include a variety of new and continued efforts. NCI began a communication initiative to increase awareness about positive growth and accomplishments occurring in the North County area among the staff at area hospitals, and encouraged use of local doctors and specialists through an online healthcare directory at NorthStLouisCounty.com. In an effort to increase access to care, NCI supported maintaining a safety net for those who cannot afford or are ineligible for health insurance, providing mental health parity, and adequately reimbursing providers. The organization supported continuation of legislation requiring Certificate of Need for new hospitals, marketed hospitals’ monthly community health events and hosted The Affordable Care Act Seminar for Small Business, focusing on what the new healthcare law means for small businesses. 12

Last year, NCI continued to promote North St. Louis County businesses and events. It promoted ExploreNorthStLouisCounty. com, a comprehensive attractions and recreations website and continued to operate NorthStLouisCounty.com, the most comprehensive regional resource website available for North County. In addition to the website, NCI published a monthly eNewsletter, marketed more than 400 different local events, member accomplishments and endeavors, and connected community and business leaders with resources in the area. Venus Martz, director of marketing and membership, said NCI saw tremendous success with marketing and special events. “Our sold-out events are not only great for networking but they’ve also become some of the leading events to attend in North County,” she said. NCI celebrated its 35th anniversary with an anniversary fundraiser, a soldout event that included an elegant five-course dinner with wine pairing and auction at Hendel’s Market Café and Piano Bar. NCI also hosted more than 300 guests at the sixth annual NCI Salutes 30 Leaders in their Thirties Recognition Reception, and honored several distinguished business, civic and community leaders for their contributions to the community at the 35th Annual Breakfast, attended by more than 550 guests. NCI also sponsored Ferguson’s Twilight Walk/Run and the Mayor’s Shamrock Ball by assisting with the marketing efforts of these events . Finally, NCI hosted a North County Legislative Reception in partnership with the area’s three chambers of commerce. A comprehensive North County Legislative Agenda was developed and adopted by NCI and the chambers as part of this initiative.

Lillie Dumas, vice president and branch manager, Commerce Bank, sees NCI membership as a way to impact not only her professional life, but her community. “As a member of NCI, I feel that I am kept abreast of issues critical to the economy of North County, which is where I live and work, “ she said. “I am then able to insure that my actions contribute to the overall health and viability of North County.” In addition to many other benefits, Kevin Hall, director of Corporate Partnerships & Program Sales, Bommarito of Hazelwood – Nissan, Honda & Volkswagen said, “[NCI] showcases businesses that are succeeding in a challenging market and educate the community about the value of partnering with these businesses. They have great firstclass events that recognize the leaders in our community who are shaping our world. Bottom line – we love NCI and proudly support its events and members alike.”

Preparing for Your Well-Woman Exam by J. Lindsay Reed, MD, Ob/Gyn When going for your well-woman exam, it is important to identify any health concerns. If you are trying to lose weight, inform your healthcare provider of your weight loss goals. It is important to ask your physician about the components of your well-woman exam so you will know what to expect. The wellwoman exam is a great opportunity to discuss any plans you may have or anticipated changes in your healthcare. If you are planning a pregnancy you should convey this information to your physician so that she can offer preconception counseling to optimize your health before you conceive Knowing your personal medical/ surgical history is vital to the wellwoman exam. Keep a written record of the dates of your prior surgeries or the reasons for your hospitalizations and bring this information to your doctor appointments. It is pertinent to bring a list of your medications to your wellwoman exam so that your physician can review the list, discuss side effects and monitor for drug interactions. Be prepared to answer detailed questions
about your family history. If necessary, interview family members prior to your appointment. According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), a pelvic exam should be performed beginning at age 21. In addition to the pelvic exam, a clinical breast exam (CBE) is often performed during the wellwoman exam, but the frequency of this component may be altered by age. The American Cancer Society, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and ACOG continue to recommend CBE every 1-3 years for women aged 20-39. ACOG recommends that women have a CBE and screening mammogram every year starting at age 40. Please review current recommendations regarding pap tests. (Some physicians maintain that an annual test is recommended while others advise one less often.) Pap smear tests should begin at age 21 regardless of the woman’s sexual activity status. Women should have pap smears every 3 years from ages 21-29 if the results are negative.
www.rhf.org
Women ages 30-65 should have two tests performed: a pap smear and a high risk human papillomavirus (HPV) test. The combination is often referred to as “co-tesing.” Women who have had a hysterectomy with removal of the cervix (also known as total hysterectomy) without a history of abnormal pap smears (CIN 2 or higher) no longer need pap smears. Pap smears are not needed after age 65 if women have not had abnormal pap smears (CIN 2 or higher). For more information, visit www. acog.org to learn more about well woman exams and www.cancer.org to search for information about cervical cancer prevention as well as breast cancer screening.
