A word from the Editor

Hello Readers Welcome to issue 18. This is our penultimate issue before Christmas - Yikes !! It’s here already... I’ve noticed recently that the card and gift shops have already started putting up their decorations, for those of you who are very organised with your Christmas shopping. I went to see Gina at the Card Emporium last week as she kindly supplied all my party balloons for mine and my friends 40th birthday party. When I arrived, both her and Richard (who works with her) were happily putting out a great selection of Christmas cards and gifts..... I refuse to buy too early,

This is my new look welcome page. I decided that I have far too much to talk about so I dedicated a whole page to myself.

but then realise that I only have 2.5 pay days until the big man comes. What we are really looking forward to this Christmas is Woodbank Nurseries Santa Land. It is a long time coming, in my opinion. Woodbank are the perfect host for such an event! The kids are going to love it. They don’t do things by halves, so expect the Santa’s Grotto be the the perfect magical place to take your little ones this Christmas. To find out about dates / times of when Santa will be there, please read the article on the centre pages.

So what’s been happening in Bingley this month? Well to start off - The Bingley Hub magazine is FULL. We are now boasting a 64 page magazine, which is the maximum size we can be. Full of features, community news, events and what’s on guide, history articles, and local advertising. Without them - we would not be what we are today - so thanks to all our lovely customers.

The BEST news for Women in Bingley so far is ....

The Bingley Women’s Institute is BORN ... Yeee haaa !!!! I am proud to say I am part of the brand new group that is Bingley Women’s Institute. What a revelation? The meetings are held on the second Monday of every month. Next meeting will be held on the 11th November, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at the Bradford and Bingley Rugby Club on Wagon Lane, Bingley. See page 8 .

At the next meeting there will be Festive Crafts ...

If you would like to know more about the Bingley WI, please read my article on page .... 4

Bingley Little Theatre & Arts Centre

We are very proud to be working hand in hand with the Bingley Little Theatre and Bingley Arts Centre in forthcoming issues. It has always been a focus point for the Bingley Hub to work with such an organisation. They are one of the main hubs in our Town and we wanted to help them promote their plays, events and gigs. So watch out for editorials on certain plays, gigs, and a full list of what’s on at the centre in the run up to Christmas. We are also pleased that our local MP Philip Davies will be sharing his thoughts on things happening in Bingley. He will write in the next two issues (November and December) and will hopefully continue to do so in the new year. So ... that’s all for now folks ... I hope you enjoy reading this bumper issue, and look forward to our Christmas issue next month. Copies will be out first week in December. Address: 143 Main Street, Wilsden BD15 0AQ

A note from your local MP Philip Davies “One thing that many of my constituents tell me is their biggest frustration is that Bradford Council raise much of their Council Tax income from people in the Shipley Constituency but then ignore its needs and spend the money in other parts of the Bradford district. This is a frustration I share and one which I have raised with Bradford Council on far more occasions than I would care to recall. There has been no better recent example of this unfairness and frustration than the announcement by Bradford Council to close Bingley Swimming Pool and to build new swimming pools in other parts of the Bradford district far removed from Bingley. This is a terrible, short-sighted decision which Bradford Council must reverse. Bingley Swimming Pool is an incredibly important, valuable and well used facility in the local community, and it is particularly well used by schoolchildren at the very many schools we have in Bingley. We

6

are forever being told of the terrible consequences we face from childhood obesity and how we must do more to encourage to children to take up sport and other physical activity. There are few better activities for children than swimming and yet we have a Council in Bradford which is proposing to close down the pool. It is not that Bradford Council cannot afford to provide swimming pools. After all, at the same time as it announced the closure of Bingley Pool it announced it was building 4 new pools – but in other parts of the Bradford District. Once again, Bradford Council has shown that it neither understands nor cares about the needs of people in Bingley – no wonder more and more of my constituents want us out of the Bradford District in order to set up a new local authority area which puts our communities at its heart rather than simply seeing it as a cash cow for other parts of Bradford. It seems that Bradford Council believe that Bingley should

just be an off-shoot of Shipley and Keighley. But Bingley is a community in its own right with its own distinct character, identity and needs. Whilst ever I am the local MP I will always fight, along with the local Councillors here and other local residents, to ensure that Bingley gets the support and investment it deserves. That means I will do all I can to persuade Bradford Council that they have got this wrong, and I urge them to reverse their decision and ensure Bingley retains the Swimming Pool that it wants and needs. It is time Bingley got its fair share of the Council Tax income it provides to Bradford Council.”

A brand new Women’s Institute for Bingley By Kimberley Devine-Harrup, Editor What a massive success the first meeting of the Bingley Women’s Institute was. Held on the 14th October, at the Bingley Rugby Club on Wagon Lane, Bingley. This will be the home to the BWI meetings on a monthly basis. With just under 100 women attending, some signing up to the WI and some just coming along as a guest. All very excited about what the meetings will have to offer in the future. President of the BWI, Jag Picknett thanked everyone for coming and presented the committee members and their duties. After Jag’s talk, we were introduced to Helena, who is a representative of the West Yorkshire Federation of the WI. Helena spoke to us about the framework of the WI, and a little history about how the WI started. After Helena’s talk, Jag and team got down to the nitty gritty... to sign the constitution! The official documents to you and I. Hooray! The WI is officially open. Meeting consisted of a brief talk by our very own Town Centre Manager, Bob Parker. Who works part time in Bingley, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Bob spoke about his future plans for Bingley ... and encouraged the ladies to put forward their ideas for a better Bingley. Following on from Bob’s talk, a fun activity was played, which meant the ladies swapped seats with other ladies so that they could get to know different people. There were 3 categories on a piece of paper that each table had to discuss; 1. What brought you to Bingley? 2. Interesting facts about Bingley, and 3. Suggested improvements within Bingley. At the end of the activity there was a spokesperson for each table who presented one the the improvements discussed and an interesting fact. Some of the ideas that came out of this were: Improvements for Bingley • Promotion of events such as the Beer and Cider festival should be much sooner • Centre needs sprucing, Bingley in Bloom • Christmas lights, finding sponsorship to have white twinkly lights • Social area for kids, somewhere to go after school • Securing Bingley Pool • Once a month cinema club at the Arts Centre 8

• Bingley needs a focus, what is the town about? • Need to promote Bingley as a place of health, walking festival The group meets every second Monday of the month, 7.30pm at the Bradford & Bingley Social Club, Wagon Lane, Bingley. To join - you can come along to a session and pay £3 as a guest to test if you like it and want to be part of the membership scheme. November’s meeting will be focussed on Christmas / Festive Crafts, including card making, felt kits, doves and angels. A small contribution maybe required to help fund the material. Drinks are on offer, and there is also a bar area. If you would like to come along, please do, we would all love to see you there. The more the merrier. For further information about the BWI, you can look us up on facebook @ www.facebook.com/bingleywi (Bingley Women’s Institute). Hope to see you there!

East Morton Jigsaw Festival proves a huge success Many thanks to the Bingley Hub for alerting readers to the East Morton Jigsaw Festival, which took place a few weeks ago, and thanks also to those readers who came along and helped make the event such a success. The school hall was filled with over 200 jigsaws, all made up for viewing and available to buy. It was quite a spectacle! We were amazed at the number of people who turned out to be jigsaw enthusiasts (what is the word for someone who loves jigsaw puzzles?!) and who enjoyed swapping ideas about which makes and types are the best ones to do. Over the weekend, jigsaws were bought, competitions were entered, faces were painted, bacon sandwiches and cakes were consumed – and most 10

important of all £2300 was raised. The money will be shared between Breast Cancer Research, and the fund for the village church’s much need heating replacement. Many thanks to all who made this such a great weekend.

Marching Band SAVED!!! By Jim Dowzall of The Royal British Legion Bingley Four Bingley people and organisations have come to our aid! Our search for Sponsors to finance the cost of the Spen Valley Scouts and Guides Marching Band has been successful and their generosity also secures the attendance of the Hot Aire Concert Band for the music and hymns in Myrtle Park. The first of the Sponsors is Mrs Susan Smith of Bailey Hills Road, in memory of her late father, Harry Waddington, who lived in Bingley for over 50 years. Bands were a major part of his life, and many times did he play The Last Post at Remembrance Time. It has been said that he “was able to play The Last Post on a piece of plain copper pipe”. Two other Sponsors are Lord Andrew Spear and his son Michael who run a Bingley based company, Gr33nDeal. co.uk. Ltd, an Approved Company under the Green Deal Scheme. Wishing to give

something back to the Community in which they live, and also supporting the Royal British Legion, their funding secures the future of the Marching Band for the next five years. Damart, the town’s main employer, and who support many other ventures, is another sponsor. They are to become more closely involved with The Royal British Legion. Our final Sponsor is one who wishes to remain anonymous and who, unfortunately, we cannot thank as they did not disclose any information. We, and all Bingley people, are greatly indebted to these people for their interest in The Royal British Legion and in particular the annual Remembrance Parade and Service. This year’s Remembrance Parade, on Sunday, 10th November, will assemble outside Bingley Arts Centre at 10.15am, with the March to the Cenotaph in Myrtle Park starting at 10.40am and arriving for the Service which will commence at 10.50am.

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Pink events were held all over the local community helping to raise funds and awareness for local charity Cancer Support Bradford & Airedale. Hayley Collis, Fundraiser at the charity said “Breast Cancer is one of the most common cancers and as such, every year our support services are used by more and more people in the area who are affected. So whilst the 25th Anniversary is a

Dedicated Follower of Fashion By Alan Molineaux MA I have just put my holiday hat away to hibernate for the winter. Using all the skills of a Blue Peter presenter I stored it in a box at the back of my wardrobe making sure that there was enough air circulation to ensure it emerges undamaged next year ready for the baking heat of a British summer. Whilst completing this important process I found a couple of items that have managed to avoid Mrs M’s regular clothes cull. She does one of these quite regularly, spurred on by some charity or other that has kindly dropped a bin liner through our door. I often wonder whether it is our need to follow fashion rather than our support for the concerned charity that drives such action. Here, however, I had found some clothes that had avoided the cull. Firstly there were my old jogging bottoms circa 1988. Made of shiny material with two long stripes running up each leg, they included the helpful feature of a small zip near each ankle so that you could take them off without removing your footwear. I have worn them very occasionally during the intervening years but I have to confess they don’t offer the same comfort they did when I was in my twenties.

I tried them on and posed for my wife, holding in my stomach, and hoping to look at least a little sportsman like. Mrs M seemed more amused than impressed. ‘It would work if you had a handlebar moustache and a curly perm’ she offered. ‘I think there is still a little life in them’ I replied. At this point my bride’s laughter subsided to be replaced with a slight look of fear at the thought that I might actually wear them outdoors. ‘Don’t worry’ I said hoping to offer comfort ‘I will wait until they come back in fashion’ I said this in certain knowledge that, apart from the cod piece and the Bay City Roller tartan trousers, everything else does seem to return to the forefront again (not that I own either of these). Just as I have managed to afford some small framed, branded reading glasses, it seems that the old style large specs are making a come back; think Deirdre Barlow and Richard Whitely.

We have seen a few celebrities wearing such items recently on TV and commented how ridiculous they look. Most people react like this when, in truth, it is not long before the irresistible need to conform overtakes them and they start wearing what they once ridiculed. The second item I found during my holiday hat hibernation ritual was a shirt on which the collar and cuffs are a different colour to the main body. I tried to model this for my wife too but ended up feeling a little depressed as I tried to fasten the buttons and failed. ‘If I had managed to fasten them’ I said pushing through my sadness ‘I think I could have pulled it off’. ‘If you had managed to fasten them’ commented Mrs M ‘we would have had to cut it off with the scissors’ Then she rolled her eyes in a way that has never gone out of fashion.

West Riding Woodturners Group The West Riding Woodturners Group was formed in 1989 and aims to promote the craft of woodturning, to provide a meeting-place for turners to meet, talk and learn, and to maintain a sociable and friendly environment. Membership stands at around 70, including three of the original founders. Club meetings are held at 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of each month at Eldwick Memorial Hall, and are friendly, social occasions. There is a bar attached to the hall and our meetings are well-attended and enjoyable events. Professional demonstrators are engaged at six meetings, these alternating with demonstrations or talks by club members, the club’s Christmas party for existing members and their guests in December, and the Annual General Meeting in April. Visitors are welcome to attend three meetings free of charge, after which they must join the club if they wish to continue. The annual subscription is £25 and membership runs from January to December. We demonstrate at several shows and exhibitions each year, including the Northern Woodworking Show at Harrogate, Woodfest in Wales, Keighley Show, Eldwick Gala, Eldwick Art Show, Pudsey Lace Fair, Clayton West Scout Gala, and the St. Ives Estate visitor centre. Members frequently submit work for judging in the handicrafts sections at major events such as the Great Yorkshire Show at Harrogate, and have won numerous prestigious awards. Twice yearly we hold open days with around 10 lathes working, and to which members may come for guidance and instruction. For further information please contact the Secretary, Steve Griffiths, by telephone on 01274 809010 or by email to rcpilot@ talktalk.net, or come along to a meeting at Eldwick Memorial Hall, Otley Road, Eldwick, Bingley, BD16 3EQ.

By popular demand from the parents of younger children the party will be held at the new time of 6.30pm – 8pm. Also this year as an added attraction there will be a free draw. The winner of which will be able to switch on the Christmas Lights on the village tree in Harden on Sunday 8th December – your chance to be

A whole lot of Fungi Fun going on at St Ives By Kimberley Devine-Harrup, Editor On Sunday 6th October, a “Fungi Walk” took place around the wonderful grounds of St Ives Estate. My husband Simon and I went along, with our two children, aged 6 and 8. The perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and the perfect way to educate little ones (and me)! My husband Simon is a wealth of knowledge, he knows a lot about many things, including mushrooms ... Well, not everything I hasten to add... but little bits, so I was pleased that his interest was also forthcoming. The walk & talk started at 1.30pm, luckily the sun was shining; it was a glorious day for mushroom hunting. We arrived at the Visitors Centre, and was greeted by Bob Taylor who works for the STRI (Sports Turf Research Institute). Bob spoke about a variety of mushrooms that he brought with him, such as the Amanita muscaria (fly agaric), with its bright red hue and distinctive white spots, the fly agaric looks

20

like the quintessential toadstool of children’s fairytales. It is, however, poisonous– though eating one is more likely to make you feel sick or delirious than kill you. The kids were fascinated by his talk. Onwards we went with our tubs, raring to find those hidden fungi, whilst stopping occasionally to hear another

talk about other types of fungi the group had found. We had to leave early, due to other commitments, but as you can see from the pictures, the walk was successful, you can tell just by looking at the variety of mushrooms that had been collected. A thoroughly enjoyable day had by all.

Looking forward to Christmas at Worth Valley Railway By David Petyt It was uncanny that Kimberley, the editor asked me to write for the Christmas edition as I was nearly at the North Pole. We were actually at Nordkapp or North Cape, the most northerly point of Europe. Everywhere is covered in snow and looking very Christmassy. Today we saw reindeer, but without a red nose. We are actually on a cruise with a difference. This is a working ship which carries mail, goods of all sorts, cars and passengers. The fleet sails up and down the coast of Norway calling at thirty six ports en-route. Sometimes they stop for several hours, sometimes for only fifteen minutes and it is interesting watching, scuttling around as they load and unload the ship to a tight schedule. Yesterday we took a trip on a 22

service bus, after buying our tickets at a shop, traveled over a mile long bridge to a cable car. The ride up the mountainside was thrilling and the views from the deep snow capped summit were spectacular. What is really amazing is that in this area which we consider the empty frozen north, tens of thousands of people live here and families have done for hundreds of years. Summer is only three months long and they don’t see the sun from November to January. Tomorrow we reach the turning point of our trip before starting the southbound leg. Our new friend Roy said his father sailed up here many years ago, but in those days they didn’t call them cruises, but convoys. Before

we return we shall take a short drive and have a look at the Russian border which should be interesting. One thing we didn’t expect to see up here was a chap wearing a car with a Worth Valley Railway logo, he said he received it as a gift and it reminded me that when we return home I shall be on the train helping Santa to give pleasure the hundreds of children. What a delight it is to help out on these busy trains, watching the children’s faces as the annual magic works again. Maybe I’ll see you there. Please say hello if you see me.

Local History

In this months history feature our local historian Alan Cattell looks at the Cause and Effects of the Bingley Boiler Explosion in 1869. Alan has given kind permission for a chapter from his book “Bingley and Surrounds - Forgotten Moments from History” to be printed. Alan will also be giving a talk on the subject at Bingley Local History Society on 14th November 2013 - Venue Church House, Old Main Street.

The Bingley Boiler explosion Work was progressing as usual at Towns Bobbin Turners opposite Bingley Railway Station on Wednesday 9th June 1869. John Town and his son Joseph had moved their business from Victoria Mills, Keighley to a two storey building in Bingley only three weeks before. Attached to their new premises were three cottages and a boiler house, the boiler of which had been in-situ for three years. Across the street was the National School where children from the infants class were playing happily in the playground unaware of what was about to happen.. Massive Blast Suddenly and without warning, a massive explosion sent masonry, machinery, steam and dust into the air. Within seconds, the bobbin mill (with the exception of a portion of the south gable end wall) had been levelled to the ground and the playground opposite had taken the full brunt of scalding steam, falling masonry and rubble. The Leeds Mercury of 10th June 1869 reported: “At 10.30 am the boiler at the mill burst with a terrific boom killing 13 people on the spot. The explosion which in the adjoining school had more the effect of an earthquake was heard from a great distance, as the reverberation echoed from hillside to hillside through the valley of the Aire, which at this point is not of great breadth.” The Glasgow Herald of the same date observed: 24

“Those who were witness of the scene from the Railway Station and the houses lying further up the slope on which the mill was built, heard first a loud report, accompanied by a rapid violent shaking of the earth and at the same instant there arose from the site a great cloud of dirty steam through which several masses of material were flying.” The falling ruin of the mill had been projected far into the infants playground where some of the younger children had been at play. Eight children were killed instantly, the youngest being three and the eldest, seven. Five employees from the mill were killed, including the wife and young daughter of Joseph Town. Joseph himself was to die later as was Robert Hodgkinson the engine tenter in charge of the boiler.

Tel: 01274 567428 www.villagefuneralservice.co.uk Police and Medical Help A Superintendant Gill and a small number of policemen had at the time of the explosion been at the Petty Sessions at the Courthouse in Myrtle Place about 150 yards away. They were able to get to the site immediately to maintain order and assist in the search. Dr Ruff, a surgeon and Dr Glendenning of Bingley were also immediately on site and were able to contact doctors from Shipley and Bradford by telegraph to assist them and the 33 injured in the aftermath of the explosion. The rooms at the school served a double purpose as a temporary hospital and mortuary. Violence of the Explosion So violent was the blast that some of the bricks from the works chimney were hurled about 300 yards into the heart of the town. A 16 lb weight attached to the boiler safety valve was found near to the Fleece Inn 200 yards away and a large iron bolt was embedded in the railway embankment. The boiler was lifted from its seat by the explosion and landed in a “shapeless mass” forty yards away. The Aftermath Funds Appeal Immediately a Committee was organised to help those affected directly by the disaster and collection boxes were placed in prominent positions throughout Bingley and on Park Road near the site of the explosion. Collections were taken in all the local churches and services were held for the bereaved. Visiting Church officials from a variety of denominations carried out impromptu prayer services at the site. Four photographers were selected to take pictures of the site and the following advertisement appeared in newspapers throughout the UK:

Over the next month Committees in Bingley, Keighley and Haworth would raise over £1000 to help pay for funerals and care of the injured. Curiosity of the Victorians The Bradford Observer of 14th June reported a huge influx of visitors to Bingley to view the accident site: 26

“A larger number of persons have visited Bingley today (Sunday 13th June) than in all probability were ever seen there on any former occasion in its history. They began to arrive with the early dawn and continued to pour into the town until sundown. The high roads from Bradford and Keighley, the by roads over the hills, the field paths, the canal bank and river side were alive with pedestrians. Conveyances of all kinds thronged the roads, from the largest omnibuses down to velocipedes, and even the canal boats were heavily freighted with passengers. The traffic on the Midland Railway was enormous and there was standing room only on trains.”

Visitors at the site of the explosion The Inquest The first inquest took place on 11th June and the jury included Thomas Garnett of Oakwood Hall, Bingley and John Adlam Heaton of Woodbank, Harden, both manufacturers. The jury formed the opinion that “No boiler properly constructed at first, properly inspected from time to time and worked under proper supervision ought ever to burst.” Evidence heard from a number of inquest witnesses gave rise to speculation about the condition of the boiler, namely: • That it was fired up to too high a pressure • The boiler overheated. • The whistle on the safety steam valve had been tied up and alarm whistle muzzled • A weak plate had been forced to give way by the pressure After viewing and examining fragments of the shattered boiler the jury requested the Coroner to Continued on page 28

“call on the services of an independent and well qualified engineer to advise them on the subject.” The Engineer selected was Mr L E Fletcher who was Chief Engineer of the Steam Users Association whose report and the Coroners comments concluded: “The boiler which exploded was not ill-shaped, and that is about all the good that can be said of it. Boilers are of various “types” or patterns, and the Bingley boiler was of the type commonly employed in the Lancashire and Yorkshire mills. So far, but no further, was the inquiry satisfactory; every step beyond appears to have disclosed something wrong. The boiler was never a good one, to begin with, having been constructed of inferior material. The plates of which it was composed were not of the quality desirable in boiler plates, but were suitable only for the manufacture of water tanks or other such purposes. Moreover, such as it was it was not new, having been bought second-hand. It had been worked in another establishment for some eight or nine years, when it was taken out, purchased by a boiler-maker, repaired, and resold. At that time it was found to be wasted at the bottom by external corrosion, and the worn parts were cut away and re-placed by new plates, but not sufficiently or with proper skill. The repairs were not carried far enough, the new plates, nearly half an inch thick, being riveted on to old plates which had worn away to a quarter of an inch, and thus lost half their original strength. With much likelihood does the Report proceed to tell us that it is “difficult to make good “ work in this way, and on the present occasion the work was certainly anything but good. The machine thus 28

tinkered up lasted just three years, and the only wonder is how it could have endured so long. An examination of the fragments showed that leakage had soon begun at the junction of the old work and the new, so that in more than one place the plates had been reduced “ to the thickness of a sheet of paper.” It was through these places that the rent had started, which ended in the destruction of the boiler. The boiler, besides the defects of its material, was ill “equipped” also. When it changed owners, its safety-valve was altered, and the valve actually in use was too small and of bad construction. To complete the tale of faults, the engine-tenter in charge of the boiler is supposed to have been both incompetent and reckless, and to have kept up an excessive pressure of steam. As regards this point, however, Mr. Fletcher was of the opinion that “some more practical lesson should be drawn from this “fatal catastrophe than to throw the onus of fifteen deaths upon an ignorant stoker already killed by the explosion.” The Engineers Report was recorded in The Engineer of 25th June 1869 and included drawings made at the scene of the explosion, which are shown above. The Verdict The Inquest Jury found the Robert Hodgkinson the engine tenter was guilty of manslaughter and that the greatest possible blame attached to the Messrs Town, the occupiers of a mill in which a manifestly incompetent engine tenter was employed and in which no suitable supervision appeared to have been exercised. They were also of the opinion that after scientific

Local History examination, the boiler had been made of inferior iron and that it had latterly been worked in a very deplorable condition. They added that they strongly recommended that all steam boilers be placed under Government inspection. Whilst the verdict pinpointed the later ownership and operation of the boiler, findings proved that the manufacture, repair and maintenance of the boiler prior to being sited at Bingley left many question marks which affected the final outcome. Questions as to Hodgkinsons’ previous work experience, low rate of pay, level of skill, the history of the boiler since its manufacture 12 years before and the siting of the mill so near a school were all discussed in depth as part of the inquest. Neither was this an isolated incident. Figures for 1869 showed that there were upwards of 80 deaths per year as a direct result of boiler explosions! Tragic When an accident of this nature happens within

a community, recrimination is no solution. What happened in Bingley was that the townspeople assisted in the rescue, raised funds to support those affected, cared for the families of the bereaved and attempted to return to normality in the most difficult of situations. In doing so it was appreciated that John Town had lost his son, daughter in law and grandchild as well as everything that he owned. Families had lost fathers, sons and daughters and would take generations to recover. Perhaps the most tragic aspect was that two young girls and seven boys were killed at the very start of their lives in an accident that was waiting to happen and could have been prevented. A fascinating history book by writer Alan Cattell Alan Cattell’s local history book Bingley and Surrounds - Forgotten Moments from History has received good reviews locally for its readability and informative style of writing. Part of Alan’s reason for writing the book was to bring history out of the archives and into the living room of those interested in local history. The other reason was to be able to donate some of the

researched content and proceeds to local archives. To date Shipley College, Saltaire Archives have received a donation to set up a Japanese Gardens archive. Several local primary schools have also been given copies of the book to use as teaching resources. Alan thanks all those who have bought the book to date for their support in enabling this to happen.

The Cemetery Club launches Bingley Little Theatre’s 66th season There were bursts of laughter, tears of emotion and moments of spontaneous applause as The Cemetery Club played to near capacity audiences at Bingley Little Theatre for six nights in the last week of September. Launching the theatre’s 66th season, Ivan Menchell’s bittersweet play tells the story of three Jewish widows in Queens, New York who meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husbands’ graves in the cemetery. Bingley Little Theatre’s production came to life under the sensitive touch of director, Anthony Leach, who has been associated with the theatre for more than 50 years, as director, actor, set designer and stage manager. Jan Darnbrough gave a moving performance as sweet-tempered Ida who is ready to begin a new life. Deborah Mouat had the audience chuckling as gogetting Lucille, a girl who just wants to have fun and who has a passion for mink at bargain prices. The third member of the trio is Doris, whose prudish and judgmental character was finely portrayed by Kay Vann. She is disapproving when Garth Rookes as Sam the butcher chances upon the three while visiting his wife’s grave. A delightful cameo by Joann Holbrough as colourful widow, Mildred, adds to the drama. With romance and emotional conflict in the air, there are poignant moments interspersed with witty one-liners as the production plays out to a powerful conclusion. The message, delivered with aplomb by this talented cast, reminds us that life is far too short to stop seeking happiness. The cast of five all have impressive acting pedigrees in local amateur theatre. Deborah has also directed, and she and Joann have turned their hand to numerous backstage roles such as lighting operator, dresser, set-painter, props, wardrobes and casting. Jan is a former chairman of BLT and office manager of Bingley Arts Centre. The Cemetery Club is Garth’s debut with Bingley Little Theatre but he has a wealth of theatrical experience with other societies including Bingley Amateur Operatic Society on this same stage. He is looking forward to sharing a stage with his two sons who are following in his footsteps. Joann’s family is also actively involved in Bingley Little Theatre. Her son, Philip is a leading actor and her husband Graeme is the theatre treasurer and he co-designed, with Anthony Leach, the set which swung seamlessly from comfortable suburban 34

A poignant moment in the graveyard during Bingley Little Theatre’s The Cemetery Club featuring Deborah Mouat as Lucille sitting room to starkly evocative graveyard. It is sometimes forgotten that an amateur production like this simply would not happen without a hardworking crew behind the scenes – in this case a production team of more than 17 people and many other helpers. The bar has been set high for Bingley Little Theatre’s season this year and local audiences have a feast of entertainment to look forward between now and July next year. NEXT AT BINGLEY LITTLE THEATRE The next performance in Bingley Little Theatre’s nine-play line-up for the 2013/2014 season is The 39 Steps, the stage version of ’s 1935 classic spy thriller written by John Buchan which plays from 2-7 December. hilarious melodrama features 139 parts played by four fearless actors led by handsome hero, Richard Hannay, complete with stiff upper lip and pencil moustache. His romantic entanglements and adventures make for an action-filled, fast-paced comedy. For more information view www.bingleylittletheatre.co.uk and for bookings visit the Box Office of Bingley Arts Centre in Main Street, which houses Bingley Little Theatre, between 11am and 3.30pm Monday to Friday and between 6.45 and 7.30pm during show weeks. Open your heart and home to a Yorkshire Rose foster dog Dog Fosterers are invaluable to a charity like us and without them we cannot help dogs. These special people play a very important role in getting dogs back on their feet and on the path to a new life. They take a dog in knowing little about them, feed them, walk them and keep them warm. Then they help to find that dog a suitable home by telling us about the dogs behaviour, training and recommendations and they speak to potential adopters about them.

would. If you think you could help with becoming a fosterer or even perhaps a volunteer for fundraising we would love to hear from you? Please either email us on enquire@ yorkshirerosedogrescue.co.uk or call Enza on 07738231734. Please only call to enquire about becoming a fosterer. For all other enquiries please email or visit our website www.yrdr.co.uk

What we offer you as a fosterer is: • First and foremost the chance at possibly one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. • Support – we are always just a phone call away for advice and we will also provide help with training where needed. • Initially a volunteer will come out for an informal chat to discuss any requirement you have and assess what dog may suit you. • Everything is provided from food, toys, beds to poo bags. • Transport – If you do not have your own transport we can arrange for drivers to take you and your foster dog to any vet appointments. • We cover all costs including veterinary costs. What we are looking for in a Volunteer Dog Fosterer • Experience of owning/caring for dogs is preferred. • No children under 5 • If you own your own dogs they must be fully vaccinated, wormed and neutered. • Have an understanding that a dog could be with you from a matter of weeks to months depending on how long it takes to re-home. • Common sense to make judgment calls in certain circumstances. We work solely with foster homes as this causes much less stress to your charge than kennels 36

Alfie is a 7 year old Jack Russell cross breed that is having to look for a new forever home. He is a very happy loving dog who would fit nicely in a home where he will not be alone. He suffers from anxiety when alone. But is great around other dogs, people and young children.

Here are a few questions & answers regarding the new 0.3 tubes.

What is 0.3 and what does it mean? 0.3 is the name referring to the new ‘Low Output Limits’ that all sunbeds have to comply with. The law has changed and to protect the consumer (you...) all Sunbeds should now be changed over and their erythemal dose reduced down to the level of 0.3w/m2. This is the ‘safe’ output level that is recognised across Europe and is covered under the EU Electrical Safety Regulations Directive that was passed in 2009. Why do things have to change, I like the sunbeds as they are? Well, it is a legal requirement for all sunbeds to be of this output. In fact Trading Standards Officers can issue notices to salons to comply or in extreme circumstances they could close a salon for being ‘unsafe to use’. When do all sunbeds have to be changed? There is no actual date set for 100% compliance, but as a responsible and careful business, we have chosen to begin to change our sunbeds now. It has all been done carefully and we will continue to monitor satisfaction levels to make sure you still get the most amazing Tan anywhere in the UK.

Pet advice

Treat arthritis early and keep your pet happy By Peter Eccles Airedale Veterinary Group One of the things that really frustrates me as a vet and an animal lover, is when people bring me their pet to be put to sleep when the pet has been suffering for months previously. If the person had brought their pet to me much earlier, most of the suffering could have been prevented, and also in many cases, if the pet had been treated for the previous few months, the pet would not have needed to be put to sleep if treated when the animal first started suffering. One of the most common conditions like this is with dogs and cats with arthritis. Arthritis in middle aged and elderly pets is quite common and cause pain and/or discomfort, sometimes for months and years. Most of this pain or discomfort can be treated to keep your pet comfortable. Osteo-arthritis is the type of arthritis pets get most commonly. This involves inflammation of the joints, with degeneration of the cartilage inside the joints. Inside the joint is synovial fluid, this is an oily fluid which helps lubricate the joint. This inflammation inside the joint causes this fluid to become less oily and this makes the problem worse. The degeneration of the inside of the joints, with inflammation, results in pain and stiffness. Osteo-arthritis is usually as a result of a life time of wear and tear but can also result from damage to a joint or if the joint is malformed, such as with hip dysplasia. We now have quite a few different ways we can treat arthritis. Weight loss can help a lot if your pet is overweight. There is a course of injections with a drug called Pentosan, which involves four injections at 5-7 days apart. This helps to make the synovial fluid oilier again and can help to repair some of the damaged cartilage inside the joint, usually resulting in rapid improvement the use of the affected joint and in less pain from this joint. Anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDS) can be used. These reduce inflammation inside the joint making it less painful. This can also help make the synovial fluid oilier again which also helps. Many of the modern NSAIDS used by your vet are exceptionally safe. One such tablet was given to a group of dogs at eight times the normal dose for a year. These dogs where checked by vets and blood tested regularly 38

in the year, with no problems found as a result of this medication. One of our patients at Airedale Vets, once ate 50 tablets after chewing the bottle (it should have been given one tablet a day) and that dog seemed perfectly OK. Also the cost of many of these medicines are substantially lower than they were ten years ago. Unfortunately there is no evidence that chondroitin nor glucosamine help in dogs nor cat. So if you think your dog or cat is showing signs of arthritis contact your vet to make an appointment.

Who put the cats out? There are many myths surrounding cat ownership and cat behaviour, but perhaps one of the worst is the belief that cats should be put out at night. Nothing could be further from the truth. Not only are cats in great danger if they are locked out at night, but they also pose a threat to other animals. Cats, known for their incredible hunting skills, predominantly seek prey at dawn and dusk, and to put the cat out at those times increases the danger for roosting birds, nocturnal creatures and sleeping diurnal animals. Sadly, cats have acquired a reputation for being responsible for the decimation of wildlife over recent years - though many would offer a counter argument - so keeping cats in from just before dusk until just after dawn, may result in fewer wildlife deaths and begin to re-establish the good reputation that cats deserve. But over and above the effect they have on wildlife, cats themselves can be put in danger by being out at night. There are risks from prey animals such as foxes and even birds of prey, there is an increased risk of road traffic accidents - particularly for darker furred cats – and there is a risk from “outdoor” cats - such as feral cats - who will be active during the night and may fight domesticated cats for food, mates or shelter, causing injuries and even chasing the domesticated cat away from the area he knows. Un-neutered queens who are put out at night may give birth away from home, putting both themselves and their newborns at risk...not to mention the anxiety they cause their owners by

Star and Bonnie not returning for several days after the birth as they care for their babies. Cats like to be warm - any cat owner reading this will no doubt be able to recount tales of their own furry friend laying as close as possible to the fire or radiator. Putting the cat out at night forces it to search for warm places, and these could be under car bonnets, near exhaust vents in restaurants and even in other houses where there is a cat flap or open window. It is far far better to have your furry friend warm and safe in your home during the dark hours. Giving him a warm safe place in your home - away from the bedrooms if you prefer it that way - is a much better arrangement than putting him outside and expecting him to face the dangers of the night alone whilst you slumber peacefully. If your cat is used to being active at night, spend some time before bed playing - throwing balls or string for him to chase, groom him, give him a meal and ensure he has access to a litter tray. He will soon settle to a new routine and will be ready to greet you with a happy purr when you get up in the morning. Beauty

Keep your hands and nails soft and smooth this Winter... By Nicola Ratcliffe The cold temperature of winter can effect your body in more ways than one. Quite ofter your hands feel the full force of the changing seasons whether its scraping the windscreen of the car before the school run or clearing the paths. Since winter is especially tough on your hands it’s nice for you to have a weather proofing plan right at your fingertips. Simply slipping on your mittens is one way of ensuring your hands are protected from the ravages of winter. However this is not the only solution. Here are a few tips to help your nails stay strong, healthy and pretty this festive season.

Moisturising Tips: In winter you are constantly going from hot to cold environments that can really affect the moisture levels in your nails leaving them dehydrated. This can result in your nails becoming brittle causing them to break, chip or split. The main things to try and avoid where possible is acetone based varnish removers and washing up liquids. So it’s time to break out the rubber gloves as washing dishes is just about the worst activity for your nails. The best way to help your nails from your day to day tasks is an intense hydrating moisturiser. This will help to keep your nails supple which will make them less likely to break or split, all you need to do is to ensure that you smother your nails as well as your hands. If your nails are polished simply massage the cream into your cuticles. This will help stimulate healthy nail growth. To make an appointment at Ooh La La’s – Cullingworth please contact Nicola or Jane on 07826 841 603.

I have been unfairly treated at work but I can’t afford to see an emploment lawyer! YES YOU CAN! The Employees Lawyer knows that hundreds of employees suffer unlawful treatment by their employer because they ‘think’ they cannot afford to see a good employment law specialist. This is not true, read on............... The Employees Lawyer offers low cost ways to fund an employment law advice & a tribunal claim. FREE 45 minutes consultation You will be amazed as to the amount of legal advice we will be able to give you in 45 minutes. We are experts in our field and we are straight talking. We will tell you if you have a legal case that we can run for you. No-Win, No-Fee - What does this mean? A DBA (Damages Based Agreement) is a type of contingency fee; a “no-win, no-fee” arrangement under which we take a percentage of compensation or settlement monies as our fee. In the event of a loss, the lawyer is generally not entitled to be paid, other than the initial legal assessment fee of £250.00. In order to assess the merits and weaknesses of the claim, all the relevant documents need to be considered in conjunction with a thorough briefing from you. Help with legal costs LEI - Legal Expenses Insurance Household insurance policies tend to be a neglected source of assistance for the simple reason that many people do not realise that they contain legal cover. It is important to investigate whether or not you have insurance at an early stage in the dispute, because if you have already taken steps in employment tribunal proceedings without the advice of an insurer-approved lawyer, you may find that you have invalidated the insurance. You will also need to check that the insurance provider does not already have its own panel of advisors, and insists that your case is sent to them. If this is the case you should bear in mind that you are unlikely to receive the one to one service that you will receive from The Employees Lawyer. This is because insurance panels of solicitors often have hundreds of cases to deal with, nationwide all at the same time. Check with your insurers that you can pick The Employees lawyer to represent you. 50

Are you part of a Trade Union? If you a member of a trade union, you should normally expect to be represented by the union in a dispute against your employer. Unions have strict rules about which cases they will support, and some can be frustratingly slow to respond and will withdraw support quickly if you do not agree the advice given. Can I get Free Advice, and if so, where from? Voluntary Sector Advice Agencies & Law Centres There are various kinds of voluntary sector advice agencies and law centres that may be able to offer free advice and/or representation. Almost all of them are badly over-stretched, and many claimants will spend fruitless hours telephoning advice agencies only to be told that no-one can help. However, some agencies will deliver an exceptional service so it is worth persevering. Mostly ‘we cannot help’ means just that – the organisation simply has no spare capacity, or does not do this sort of work. Can I get Legal Aid? There is NO public funding (in any, but the most exceptional cases) for employment law matters & representation at tribunal hearings. For your FREE 45 minute consultation, contact me on 07715 672698 or email me at gaynor@the-employees-lawyer.co.uk

Movie Reviews 5 facts about Frozen 1. The main theme of the film is “the power of love over fear,” says co-director Jennifer Lee. 2. The film is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen,” but strays from the story while keeping “the essence of it,” according to codirector Chris Buck. 3. Olaf the snowman (Josh Gadd) isn’t just funny, he’s also got a “big role to play representing the innocent love in the scale of fear versus love,” says Lee. 4. The musical team behind “The Book of Mormon,” Kristen and Robert Lopez, wrote original songs for “Frozen,” but “the songs have to earn their way into the film,” says producer Peter Del Vecho. 5. The effects group created a snowflake generator that allowed them to randomly create 2,000 unique snowflake shapes for the film.
