Hello Readers Welcome to our bright shiny bulk packed October issue We’d really like to hear from you about subjects that may interest you with regards to your town. There are lots of positive things happening in Bingley, the new Aldi store, which hopefully will be ready end of 2014, The Bingley WI, then there’s the negatives such as Bingley Pool; and the councils attempt to close the pool. This is my page to bring these stories to your attention, and to gain some feedback. We would love to hear from you. customers for sticking with us. We must be doing something right ! And we are excited about our two forthcoming bumper Christmas issues, November and December! We love helping the local businesses promote their products and services in the run up to Christmas. Also, we’d like to say a BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY to US!!! We are 3 years old this month, YAY! Well, when I say WE I really mean our business Overt Marketing - me, Simon (my hubby), Chris (our designer) and Alex (our sales chap). Its been a tough 3 years, but we are still here, by the skin of our teeth! However they do say businesses thrive in their third year! That is so true. Our third year 2013, has been our best year yet. We’ve made fabulous friends with our clients, won new business contracts and we have become a serious player in the marketing/ advertising industry in
this immediate area. We want to thank all our friends and family for the support they have given us over the last 3 years.
So what’s been happening recently in Bingley? Aldi Bingley I went along to the Aldi new store exhibition on 10th September to find out what all the fuss was about. The turn out was good, and so far we have been advised that 170 people attended, and to date Aldi have received over 500 responses from the local community of which 97% support the principle of a new Aldi food store is built in Bingley. If you would like to write to me with your views on the proposition, please do so, and we will feature your feedback in the next issue. You can remain anonymous if you prefer.
Bingley Women’s Institute An initiative by a local lady Jag Picknett, to create a Bingley Women’s Institute. What a fantastic idea! If I’d have had the time, I would have done the same. It’s time that Bingley had such a group of women to promote Bingley in a positive light. The meeting was held at Church House, on Monday 16th September. I arrived just after 7.30pm, to find a very squashed room full of wonderful Bingley women. The meeting was purely to find out if there was any interest ... any interest ? Gosh, I was gob smacked at the total number of ladies that had attended. Shortly after, Jag confirmed that there were just short of 100!! Well done Bingley Women. The next meeting and the 1st meeting of the year, will be held at the Bradford Sports & Rugby Club, Wagon Lane, Bingley at 7.30pm until 9.30pm on 14th October 2013.. Where the initial

meeting will be to discuss what the ladies would like to achieve out of future meetings. There is a membership fee of £34.70 which covers 2014 to December 2015. Value for money!
Bingley Pool Petition The news we have heard recently about the closure of Bingley Pool has really pulled the residents of Bingley together. The same lady that initiated the WI also initiated the Save the Pool Petition. In total a collection of 3675 signatures were gained over a period of 4 days! That is amazing. Well done to all those ladies / gents that helped out. Again, we would welcome your comments about the Bingley Pool closure and will aim to get some of the comments shown in our next issue.

Bingley Youth Café - A taste of the globe comes to local young people in Bingley Bingley Youth Café, has been providing a safe and inviting space for young people aged 13 – 19 since 2011. Now in its 3rd year, the café has been working with young people to attract funding for a project of their choosing. This work has resulted in a successful bid to the Bradford Youth Service Youth Opportunity fund which will enable the café to support young people in an International Food project. Every Friday evening from 6 p.m. Young people will be able to cook and eat recipes they have asked for from around the world. One young person said “This is a good opportunity to help young people to learn to cook” - Conner Blagbrough. While another stated “It will be good because we will get to try new foods” - Luke Rutterford.
Paula Stone the Youth Café Development worker said “We are thankful of the support from the Youth Opportunity Fund which is enabling us to broaden our activities to young people. We hope that young people will gain new skills or even try something new.” The project runs until the end of March 2014. Unfortunate news for our Wilsden readers By Kim the Editor Since the Co-op in Royd Street, Wilsden has been refurbished and a brand new manager has taken over. It is unlikely that our loyal readers from Wilsden will be able to pick up a copy of the magazine from our point of sale stand. We have always been thankful to the Co-op for allowing us to put our stand in their supermarket, with the Co-op being the heart of the community, and the Bingley Hub being the local community magazine for the area. But their rules have changed, which doesn’t allow us to continue putting our stand in there, without it costing us a 6

Community The facts The number of people being diagnosed with breast cancer is increasing, but the good news is survival rates are improving. This is probably because of more targeted treatments, earlier detection and better breast awareness. • The biggest risk factor, after gender, is increasing age – 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50. • Breast cancer also affects men, but it’s rare – around 400 men are diagnosed each year. • Breast cancer is not one single disease there are several types of breast cancer. • Not all breast cancers show as a lump, and not all breast lumps are breast cancer. • Less than 10% of all breast cancers run in families, so having someone in your family with breast cancer doesn’t necessarily mean your own risk is increased.

Living History
Barry Watson - Bingley’s World Record Channel Swimmer Written by Alan Cattell Two years ago as part of his history research, Alan Cattell our local historian launched a Living History project. His intention was to capture 20th Century events relating to Bingley before they are lost. This feature article is based on Alans interviews with Barry Watson from Crossflatts, who in 1964 became a World Record holding Channel Swimmer. The article is intended to identify the events leading up to and subsequent to such a major achievement and some of the many key people who influenced and helped Barry along the way. Early Days, Primary School and Ill Health Barry Watson was born in Shipley in 1938, the son of a butcher. At an early age he went to live with his Grandfather in Crownest Road, Bingley and attended Belgrave Road and Mornington Road schools. In his youth Barry contracted double pneumonia and was not expected to live through the experience and later, measles, which badly affected his eyesight. Despite these drawbacks he had a key advantage, a Grandfather who became his motivator and mentor and who encouraged him to use a chest expander to exercise and build up his strength. Still in Barry’s possession is a silver cup which his Grandfather won in 1907 when competing in a 40 yards swimming championship at Shipley Baths. This stimulated Barry’s early interest in swimming. 12

Secondary School In 1949, Barry went to the Modern School, Bingley (now Beckfoot) and was introduced to swimming by Johnny Rock who played Rugby League for Keighley. In his second year at the school his teacher Margaret Wilman also took an interest. There was a “house” system at the school with the four “houses” being Gawthorpe, Ryshworth, Milner and St Ives (all named after notable mansion houses in the Bingley area). Barry was in Gawthorpe house. He remembers that initially swimming consisted of playing “tig” in Bingley Baths. Whilst in the second year he progressed to competing in the 75 yards sprint (three lengths of the pool) and became School Champion, competing and winning against boys older than himself. He recalls that he won the Championship three years in a row. Technical School and Apprenticeship In years three and four at the Modern School, Barry and Harvey Smith a friend from his first two years, commenced studying Building in the Technical part of the school. After leaving school in 1953 Barry became an Apprentice Compositor in the printing industry. Both Barry and Harvey would eventually become internationally recognised, Harvey as a Show Jumper and Barry as a Long Distance Open Water Swimmer.

Barry, his sisters and a training partner Selwyn Hird - Mid-Winter in the River Aire Whilst serving his apprenticeship Barry continued to train at various indoor swimming pools namely Bingley, Keighley, Shipley Old Pool and Le Page Street Bradford, building up the length of the distances he swam. Additionally he began to use the outdoor pools at Bradford Lido (now Lister Park) and at Otley to build up his ability to swim longer distances as a precursor to open water swims. First Open Water Swim At the age of 18 Barry competed in his first serious open water swim, the one mile Clyde-Firth swim. Here he learned an important lesson as regards being slow into the water when the starters gun went off. This never happened again and in future years several of Barry’s coaches would comment that he had a good style, but swam too fast in terms of endurance swimming! National Service Between 1960 and 1962 Barry served his National Service at Chilwell in Nottinghamshire but during his service he did little or no swimming and for two years did not train. Training Resumes! On leaving the Services he resumed his training with Geoff Oddie as his trainer. Additional help was given by Bert Lax the Manager at Bingley Pool who gave Barry a key to the Baths so that he could carry out training in the early morning and after work. In the two years leading up to his first Channel swim Barry became the British Long Distance Swimming Association Champion in Windermere in 1963 and 1964 and the 16 mile Fleetwood to Morecambe Champion in 1963. First Channel Swim 1964 By August 1964 Barry was ready for his first attempt at swimming the Channel hoping to beat
the British Record of 12 hours 30 minutes. August is generally the month when conditions are good and most swims are attempted. The date he started his attempt was 16th of August and he set off from France at 2 am, the tides dictating the best time for swims to be started. Barry remembers the hotel Manager giving up his own bed at the Cap Gris Nez Hotel so that Barry could rest prior to the attempt. He also recalls being given a meal of chicken and chips an hour prior to the swim to keep his strength up! Sponsorship Seven other swimmers set off at the same time in choppy conditions and Barry was supported by his coach, Geoff Oddie who accompanied him in a trawler. Prior to the swim Watmoughs Printers, Barry’s then employers had donated £100 towards his attempt and through public subscriptions and fund raising events he had raised £300 towards accommodation, transport and trawler costs (of £75). Barry acknowledges that as an amateur, whilst he did not make any money he was lucky enough to receive sponsorship from a number of sources. Fields Printers of Lidgett Green, Bradford a future sponsor and employer of Barry’s also assisted his Long Distance Swimming career. Continued on page 14 My Community HUB

Living History A World Record!! Barry covered the 22 mile swim from France in a World Record 9 hours and 35 minutes, reaching St Margaret’s Bay, Dover at 11.35 am on the Sunday morning. He remembers that initially few people were there to cheer him ashore because in planning a swim, due to the tides, no-one knows definitely where they are going to land. Barry’s time beat the existing World Record France to England swim by 1 hour, a record which would stand for a further 18 years.
Barrys Certificate from the Channel Swimming Association recognising his World Record Time of 1964
A Good Weekend for Yorkshire Just prior to Barry’s record another record had been set by Fred Trueman the Yorkshire and England cricketer. Fred became the first bowler to take 300 Test wickets in a career, which he achieved whilst playing at the Oval in the 5th Test against Australia. Trueman then travelled to Dover where Yorkshire were playing Kent. Sensing an important occasion, the Press organised a presentation at the White Cliffs Hotel, Dover to which they invited Trueman and Barry, to celebrate their achievements. Barry remembers Trueman jokingly remarking to him that it had taken him “years” to set his record, whereas Barry had become famous in only 9 hours 35 minutes! Barry replied that what Trueman hadn’t taken into account was the many hours that he had spent in isolated training. Both men kept in contact with each other until Fred Trueman died in 2006.

Presentation in Bingley At the end of August 1964 a Civic Reception was held at Bingley Town Hall at Myrtle Park after a motorcade procession attended by thousands of Bingley residents. Barry still has in his possession a film of the celebration at which he was presented with a silver salver from the people of Bingley. Further Long Distance Championships During a busy period in the 1960’s Barry became Champion at the following events: 1964 Windermere 1965 Fleetwood to Morecambe 1966 2 Way - Windermere and Fleetwood to Morecambe 1967 Fleetwood to Morecombe, Loch Lomond and 2 Way - Windermere 1968 2 Way - Windermere He is particulary proud of two swims where he set new records, namely the Fleetwood to Morecambe 16 miles which he covered in 4 hours 7 minutes and the Lancaster to Morecambe 23 miles which took him 7 hours 2 minutes. He would go on to swim Windermere 39 times and Coniston 47 times as well as on one occasion swimming Windermere, Coniston and Ullswater all in the same day. Further Channel Swims During 1968, 1969 and 1970 Barry again swam the Channel but as two-way attempts on each occasion. Unfortunately bad weather conditions forced him to abandon the twoway attempts. His times of 15 hours and 21 minutes, 13 hours and 56 minutes and 15 hours and 14 minutes still represent a significant achievement when you consider that Barry was a full-time employee and an amateur swimmer! International Recognition In 1972 the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Florida USA recognised the scale of Barry’s swimming exploits by inducting him as an Honour Swimmer.

Enjoying the Outdoors Overcoming the ill health of his early youth Barry proved that hard work, dedication and training using local facilities and mentors and coaches could reap international recognition and rewards. He is still an active fell walker having completed all 214 of the Wainwright fell walks in the Lake District and a total of 77 of Munro’s in Scotland (mountains above 3000 feet). Whilst still a swimmer, his interests nowadays revolve around following fell running and athletics. He closely follows the exploits of his friend Ian Holmes a British Fell Running Champion (Three Peaks, Snowden and Ben Nevis winner). Barry is also a close friend of Chris Cariss of Bingley Harriers who ran the London Marathon in 2004 with a fractured heel in a time of 2 hours 15 minutes and 8 Seconds. Perhaps Barry’s greatest current passion and interest is in the Triathlon which combines his interest in swimming and running with cycling. On Tuesday evenings most weeks he can be found watching his friends Alastair and Jonathan
Brownlee training at Leeds Metropolitan University Campus. One of Life’s Enthusiasts! Meeting Barry you soon realise that you are in the presence of a knowledgeable sporting enthusiast who enjoys a good natter about the sporting exploits of others rather than himself. I found that the admiration that he had for his Grandfathers sporting achievement and support and his avid interest and excitement in the progress of the Brownlee Brothers and other athletes are a testament to this self-effacing mans approach to life. My thanks to Barry for his time, interest and energy and for giving me access to his archives and photographs. Alan Cattell - Bingley August 2013 Photographs Courtesy of Barry Watson and Alan Cattell

Editors Note - Since Alan’s article was written the press have announced the proposed closure of Bingley Pool, a Bingley feature and facility since 1927. For readers feeling strongly about the closure there is a local Save Bingley Pool petition. Bingley Civic Trust website has an online petition which can be accessed on www.bingleycivictrust.org/pool-petition. Several local shops in the Town Centre also have paper copies of the petition to sign.

A £2 fishing licence Alan Molineaux MA The pleasant weather has brought the crowds out of their houses and on to towpaths of our local canal ways. In general the warmer climes bring out the best in people and we pass other travellers with a nod and a smile and an occasional ‘thank you’ to cyclist who offer us even the smallest of signal that they are steaming towards us from behind. We like to think that we walk a good distance on these occasions but every now and then we see a sign that reminds us that the canal has a life outside of our experience of it. Leeds is sixteen and a quarter miles east whilst Liverpool is 111 miles the opposite way. I often say ‘Look! Proof that Liverpool is ill’ at this point in a poor attempt at adding humour. If it wasn’t for such signs you could be blissfully unaware of the existence of either city as you walk through the Yorkshire countryside. With renewed interest we started to look out for other signs on the towpath. Mrs M soon spotted one that informed us that we could 16

fish for the day, if so desired, for the small price of £2. I commented that this seemed a good price if fishing were your chosen hobby. My bride did not agree and offered the comment ‘it seems a lot of money just for having a sit down’. I felt the need to defend the local anglers against such an onslaught even though I have not taken part since I was seventeen. ‘Just having a sit down’ I said somewhat exasperated, ‘you could say a similar thing about most hobbies. Under such a system we might conclude: The Cinema is merely £7.40 for sitting in a dark room. Ten Pin bowling is just paying money to wait for your ball to be sent back. And going swimming
is just a more expensive way of having a bath. Mrs M thought I was taking things too far but the point was made. Knowing the value of your hobby is all about context. One man (or woman’s) game of golf is another person’s expensive long walk. The same is true of canals; one person’s three-mile stretch of inland water is another man’s section of a Leeds to Liverpool highway. To be honest I am not sure if anyone travels the whole distance anymore but you get the point. We travelled a little further in the general direction of Leeds, without any intention of visiting the city, and wondered if those engaged in fishing were getting value for money. After all if they weren’t catching any fish it would make my wife’s comment correct: two pound is a lot of money just for having a sit down!

History Garden grows from Strength to Strength Written by Pam Laking Friends of St Ives The Friends of St Ives’ History Garden continues to grow from strength to strength. After suffering badly from the unusual snowy spring, our old species of herbs, roses, fruit trees and flowers are now all doing very well. Recently we were lucky enough to receive a large donation of flowering plants from Woodbank Nurseries in Harden who are now very kindly sponsoring the large beds 20/21 in the garden. The plants we received included many of the lovely old cottage garden favourites such as Sweet Williams, Hollyhocks, Delphiniums, Foxgloves, Fuschias and 2 lovely species of Honeysuckle which we are training over the new recently constructed wooden Arbour, placed curving over a seat where we hope visitors will enjoy sitting peacefully, enjoying the scents and sights all around them. The garden is now attracting and supporting many bees, butterflies and other insects. We also have resident toads and some newts. In the autumn, the old rose species should

be covered in hips, many of which will be, to modern eyes, in unusual shapes and colours. These should give the St Ives’ birds something tasty to feast on before winter sets in. Woodbank also donated to us a very large Wisteria which we’ve planted in the corner of the bed where it can grow and spread all over the lovely old grey stone walls which are at least 350 years old. We can just imagine how beautiful this will look when
flowering for many, many years to come. We are really grateful to the Woodbank Nursery for helping St Ives in this way and really appreciate all the help and advice given to us by Liz Fisher (one of their plant specialists) whilst choosing our flowers Please do come and visit the garden and watch it change and develop through the seasons. It’s open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11am to 3pm.

The beauty of perfect sight By David Petyt A few months ago my optician told me I need cataract surgery and where would I like to have it done, Bradford, Cottingley or Airedale? Without hesitation I said Airedale because I have been a volunteer there for many years. Within a couple of weeks I had seen the surgeon and a couple of weeks later, there I was, full of trepidation awaiting the procedure. It didn’t take long, and two or three hours later, there I was waiting for a taxi home, peeping through a gap in the dressing and being able to see perfectly. Wow! Two weeks later, I was back in having the eye done and following each op, I had to pop in a few drops into each eye every day for a few weeks. It wasn’t long before the surgeon said, “OK you can start driving again” and not long after I was visiting the optician for a new set of specs. I don’t actually need them for distance as my sight is now almost perfect, but I do need 20

them for reading. When he had finished he showed me a line of text about this size “about this size”, and said that is what you have just read, This : “about this size”, is the average sight for a fifty year old, and this :
“about this size”
, is what you couldn’t read three months ago ! Most days I forget to put specs on until the newspaper arrives, then I tend to leave them on as I have worn glasses since I started school and couldn’t see the blackboard. The other day, I was working on my computer and thinking, “I really need to put my specs on for this, went wandering off looking for them. I asked my wife if she had seen them, “yes” she said, “you’re wearing them”. • Hospitals have been getting a lot of bad press in recent months, but I’ve kept up to date with all the results and reports from Airedale and I know it is a brilliant general hospital. They don’t do everything. You’ll probably have
to go to Leeds for Heart surgery or to BRI for nose, ears and throats and Airedale isn’t perfect, who is? But it’s a flipping lot better than those you read about in the national press. I am just one of about 400 happy volunteers who help out, pushing wheelchairs, guiding folks to different departments, running the shops, driving pick-up cars, arranging flower displays and all sorts of other things. We like to think we help people just because we smile at them in the corridors, and of course all the money we raise goes to buy things in the hospital which helps the patients.

Would your children’s school like to learn about Cacti? The Bradford Branch of the British Cactus and Succulent Society would welcome the chance to introduce groups and individuals to the pleasure of growing cacti and has had contacts with a number of schools, youth organisations and training centres where cacti have been used as the subject for various projects. Artwork including drawing and mounting for display, photography using computers for image enhancement, modelling in various materials and even needlework in producing decorations on a quilt. In other practical ways seedlings have been repotted and miniature gardens produced using spineless succulents rather than cacti - Health and Safety again! If you are involved in a group or school which might be interested in a visit to introduce cacti please contact Brian Thornton on 01535274755 for further information. Details of the National Society and the Bradford Branch are on the internet. Monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday in each month in Shipley Library at 7.15 and anyone interested is invited. Presentations are made about cacti growing by various speakers but the meetings are informal and welcoming.

Beauty
Treat your skin this Autumn By Jane Richards We all know Winter is fast approaching and summer is bidding fair well but do not despair, Ooh La La’s are here to help. At Ooh La La’s we like to make sure you all feel fabulous when you leave the salon but in between treatments to keep you feeling refreshed why not try one of our homemade foot masks. It will help you relax after a long day and will leave your feet feeling brand new. Our favourite recipe: Honey & Milk Mask • 1 Cup of Organic Honey, • 4 Cups of Powdered Milk • 1 Tablespoon of Olive Oil. The honey contains antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that will nourish your skin and nails. The olive oil contains anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agents, these keep your feet looking and feeling clean and smelling fresh. The powdered milk works as an exfoliator to tackle any dry skin cells. This combination will leave your feet feeling rejuvenated. Once you have collected all of your ingredients, using a spoon or whisk mix them together in a jar or tub until you have a fairly thick, slightly gritty consistency. Before applying the mask make sure your feet are over the bathtub as it can get a little messy. It might be more comfortable to pull a chair up to the bath. Apply handfuls of the mask to your feet coating them generously. Once you are happy they are fully covered, 26
|
leave the mask to work for approximately 1 hour. I usually read a book or listen to some music until the hour is up. The mask is very soothing and will help relieve any soreness. Once the hour has elapsed run some warm water in the bath until your feet are covered and allow the water to dissolve your mask. This usually takes about ten minutes. After, gently pat your feet dry and massage some moisturiser into them. Once you have completed your pamper session your feet will feel refreshed. To make an appointment at Ooh La La’s – Cullingworth please contact Nicola or Jane on 07826 841 603.

It’s time to plant your Spring bulbs It’s October, so it must be spring bulb time! We have a fabulous display of bulbs in our covered greenhouse with all your old favourites – Crocus, Snowdrops, Daffodils, Tulips – alongside some more unusual varieties. If you need advice on how and where to plant, please just ask.
Give your plants a head start The Potting Shed are taking bookings for Christmas lunch... Christmas menu starts as of 1st December.
Autumn is actually the best time for planting something new in your garden, be it a tree, shrub, perennial or climber. The soil is still warm and there is likely to be plenty of rain to provide much needed water. This encourages root growth and gives the plant time to get established before winter sets in. When spring arrives, the plant will have
had a really good head start. When planting, water well, then remove the pot and plant in a hole that’s about 5cm larger all round. Back fill with soil mixed with multi purpose compost and gently firm. Water well and continue watering, unless the aforementioned rain does it for you!
You and your garden The Christmas Shop will be open for Christmas decorations, lights etc from 7th November.
October is a great month to be a gardener. As the flowers begin to fade, the gorgeous colours of autumn start to appear so there is always something to smile about. There’s always something to do too, with crops to harvest, spring bulbs to plant plus some autumn lawn care. It’s the perfect time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials too.

Safest Tanning EVER at We would like to announce some important changes in the Tanning Industry recently, concerning the tubes used in Sundbeds. European Legislation is now advising an output limit of 0.3W/ m2 for all sunbed tubes.
But what does this mean to you, the consumer? This safe tanning advice is based on scientific advice to European Member States, the output limit represents the intensity of the midday sun in the summer in the Mediterranean. In other words this safe limit is intended to match sunbed output to the maximum that human Caucasians have biologically evolved to cope with. We have installed six brand new 0.3 compliant sunbeds to our salon, that will guarantee you get the tan you want, whilst minimizing the risk of sunburn. The tubes may take a little longer to tan, but achieving a tan that lasts longer. For more information regarding the new sunbed tubes and their safety, please get in touch with the Salon.
Here are a few questions & answers regarding the new 0.3 tubes. What is 0.3 and what does it mean? 0.3 is the name referring to the new ‘Low Output Limits’ that all sunbeds have to comply with. The law has changed and to protect the consumer (you...) all Sunbeds should now be changed over and their erythemal dose reduced down to the level of 0.3w/m2. This is the ‘safe’ output level that is recognised across Europe and is covered under the EU Electrical Safety Regulations Directive that was passed in 2009. Why do things have to change, I like the sunbeds as they are? Well, it is a legal requirement for all sunbeds to be of this output. In fact Trading Standards Officers can issue notices to salons to comply or in extreme circumstances they could close a salon for being ‘unsafe to use’. When do all sunbeds have to be changed? There is no actual date set for 100% compliance, but as a responsible and careful business, we have chosen to begin to change our sunbeds now. It has all been done carefully and we will continue to monitor satisfaction levels to make sure you still get the most amazing Tan anywhere in the UK.

How long will my spray tan last?
Your body is always shedding dead skin cells. This is why even a natural sun tans fade over a few days. Spray tanning affects only the outer skin layer, so just like a natural sun tan the spray tan fades as your skin cells are shed. Your Golden Rays spray tan will usually last between 5-10 days, but longer if you follow our Spray Tanning Tips.
Red Light therapy -Simple, Effective, Safe Helps to stimulate collagen and elastin in the skin! The use of red light technology, is the most powerful & effective way to stimulate the production of collagen & elastin in the skin. Fine lines and wrinkles result through the lack of collagen and elastin in the skin. Red light penetrates into the dermis layer of the skin, energizing the cells, thereby helping to create collagen and elastin, much the same as when you were younger. Collagen helps to plump up the skin, while elastin helps to firm the skin thus diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. It’s that simple! What is Photo Rejuvenation Red Light Therapy?
Collagen (Red Light Therapy)
Photo Rejuvenation or Red Light Therapy is the use of light to create an anti-aging effect on the skin and is quickly becoming recognized as one of the safest, fastest and most affordable ways to achieve younger, more vibrant looking skin.

Health Matters
A pain in the balls! Cancers seem to be getting a lot of publicity at the moment, and rightly so! October is Breast Awareness Month, and then comes “Movember”, when lots of men grow comedy facial hair to raise money and awareness of prostate cancer. Thanks to such campaigns, real progress is being made in the treatment and survival rates of many forms of cancer. One form of cancer that is perhaps talked about much less is testicular cancer. Treatments and survival rates have improved dramatically for testicular cancer over the past few decades. Men are often reluctant to go their GP when they notice a problem, but the earlier you notice a problem and the sooner you receive treatment, the better the outlook.
Facts about testicular cancer • Can come at any age, but most common between the ages of 15-44 • The numbers of cases have doubled since the 1970s, with 2000 young men affected each year • Survival rates at 10 years after diagnosis have risen from 68% in the 1970s to over 95% We’re not really sure what causes testicular cancer. It is more common in men who had undescended testicles at birth. It also runs in families, you are 10 times more likely to get testicular cancer if a brother has had it. 36

My Community HUB
Dr Simon Gazeley, a GP at Springfield Surgery in the Canalside Healthcare Centre in Bingley, will be sharing with The Hub readers exclusive advice on topical health issues and giving his tips for a healthy life. The most common symptom of testicular cancer is a lump. Other symptoms includea dull ache or sharp pain in your testicles or scrotum, which may come and go, or a feeling of heaviness in your scrotum. This may be accompanied by a dull ache in your lower abdomen (stomach area), fatigue, weight loss, or feeling generally unwell. Lumps in or around the testicles are usually not cancers, in fact only around 4% of men attending with a lump have a cancer. For example, there is a sac behind the testicles called the epididymis, which commonly develops cystic lumps. These are harmless, and usually your GP will be able to tell if this is the case with either a simple examination and/or a scan. However, it is really to check out new lumps, because if testicular cancer is not identified at an early stage, it can spread and reduce your chances of a cure. Regular self-examination will help you become more aware of the normal feel and size of your testicles so that any abnormalities can be spotted early on. It’s best to do this after a warm shower or bath so that the scrotal skin relaxes. Support the scrotum in the palm of your hand and become familiar with the size and weight of each testicle. Examine each testicle by rolling it between your fingers and thumb. Gently feel for lumps, swellings, or changes in firmness. Remember each testicle has an epididymis at the top which carries sperm to the penis. Don’t panic if you feel this – it’s normal. If you notice any change, see your GP, he certainly won’t think you’re a pain in the balls!! If you would like to give feedback or comments to Simon regarding this feature, or would like to suggest ideas for future features, please contact him through Bingley Hub by emailing: kim@overtmarketing.co.uk

Charity Golf Day A runaway success The inaugural charity golf day staged by regional telecoms company CommsProvider is expected to raise an estimated £3,000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA). A total of 68 players competed in the stableford event, held at Bingley St Ives Golf Club, with a foursome from Bradford IT services company KS Services – managing director Paul Kelt, sales director Richard Kelt and customers Graham Braithwaite and David Hindle – taking the team prize. Chris Berry, of Leeds-based Liquid Voice, posted the best individual points tally, with Paul Kelt and David Hindle also chipping in again when landing nearest the pin prizes. Craig Wintersgill, of Naylor Wintersgill in Bradford, had the longest drive, with a special prize for guessing the number of balls lost on the day – a whacking 125 in total – falling to CommsProvider’s Dan Farmer. MC at the presentation ceremony was CommsProvider’s sales manager Stuart Pollard, who thanked all companies which had taken part in, supported and sponsored the event, among them headline sponsor O2, and others who had donated prizes for a charity auction. Prizes were presented by Nicky Massen, West & South Yorkshire regional fundraising manager for the YAA, and Carrie Cheeseman, of Morley, Leeds, who was flown to hospital by helicopter after suffering horrific injuries in a road traffic accident. Nicky outlined the vital life-saving role of the YAA, which is funded entirely by donations from businesses and the general public, while 38

Carrie, now recovered and a true champion of the YAA, spoke about her ordeal and her gratitude to the service, which she believes saved her life. Also present were aircrew paramedics John Baxter and Darrel Cullen. Thanks were also paid to the CommsProvider team responsible for organising the company’s first-ever charity golf day, staged on the back of solid business performance and growth. It may now become an annual event. Both CommsProvider and its mobile phone recycling arm MPRO are members of the YAA’s Yorkshire Business Supporters Network. Mike Bower, chairman of CommsProvider, said: “Our inaugural golf day was a runaway success, raising money for a fantastic and crucial cause, which deserves all the support it can get, while also allowing like-minded Yorkshire businesses to network.” Nicky Massen said: “We are extremely grateful to CommsProvider – and everyone involved in staging this inaugural event – for supporting the YAA. As an independent charity, we rely solely on individuals, groups and corporate supporters like CommsProvider to help us raise the £9,990 we need each and every day to keep our two air ambulances flying and saving lives across the region.” Some of the attendees of the Established in 2010, CommsProvider Charity Golf Day CommsProvider operates from purpose-built 10,000 sq ft premises near Halifax, West Remember to quote the Yorkshire, offering a dedicated Bingley Hub if you use account management, support, any of the local services repair and fault resolution portfolio on behalf of an advertised in the expanding nationwide customer magazine base.

Advertorial
Do you dread going to work on a Monday morning? Is somebody or something making you unhappy at work? You might have a claim for Constructive Dismissal. Constructive Dismissal is a term that most people recognise, but they are not quite sure what it is, or whether they can claim it against their employer. What is it? In brief, the law of constructive dismissal applies if your employer takes some action or step that fundamentally breaches the terms of your contract of employment. The action can be an express breach, that is something that written down in your contract, OR it can be an implied breach. The most common implied breach being your employer does something that leads you to no longer trust or have confidence in them as your employer. It is important to understand that the breach of contract must be so serious, unfair or unreasonable that it makes it impossible for the employee to continue in employment. What types of behaviour will amount to a fundamental breach of contract? No list can be exhaustive, but some of the more common types of behaviour include: • A deliberate breach of a term in your contract of employment such as a pay cut • Withdrawal of other benefits provided to you, e. g. a company car • An important and significant change in your duties e. g. if you are a sales manager and you have most of your sales activities removed • A serious failure to provide you with a safe working environment
• Suspending you where there is no contractual right to do so or where there is no justification for doing so • A deliberate failure to provide you with a reasonable opportunity to obtain redress for a grievance Can I claim it? To claim constructive dismissal you must show: • That your employer broke your contract in a fundamental way • That you resigned as a result of your employer’s breach of contract • It is important you clearly communicate your belief that your employer has breached your contract as soon as possible; not doing so could mean that you will be taken to have accepted the breach and you will lose your right to claim constructive dismissal. How much can I get? Claims for constructive unfair dismissal are made up of two elements: Wrongful dismissal - your compensation will be limited to the length of your notice period. Unfair dismissal - compensation to recover your past loss of earnings, loss of pension contributions, contractual benefits and also your future loss of earnings, pension contributions & contractual benefits arising from your dismissal. Claims for unfair dismissal are capped by law, so that in this current year the maximum you could be awarded by an Employment Tribunal (even if your losses were higher) is £74,200 by way of compensation. Every case is different, however as a rule of thumb compensation in successful constructive dismissal cases will be limited to the equivalent of between 6 to 18 months gross salary in the job you were dismissed from. For more detailed information please download the constructive dismissal factsheet from www.the-employees-lawyer.co.uk OR Book a FREE 30 minute appointment to discuss legal merit of a constructive dismissal case. Pet advice
The best way to deal with ticks on your pets By Peter Eccles Airedale Veterinary Group With the cooler, autumn weather, the risk of your pet getting ticks peaks, late summer early autumn is the worst time of year for tick infestations. Ticks are generally found in grassy fields, heath land & woods, especially in fields where sheep have been. Hedgehogs can bring ticks into your garden. At this time of year they often climb to the top off tall grass & wait for animals or humans to go by. They then bite their way through the skin & then suck blood for several days before dropping off. Ticks cause many diseases. They can cause a marked reaction in the skin where they attach; this can need treatment with antibiotics or other medicines. When the tick starts sucking blood it can transmit infectious disease. The commonest such disease is Lyme Disease. It is thought that the true number of pets with Lyme disease could be about 2000 each year. Symptoms of Lyme disease are often flulike, including: extreme tiredness, muscle pain, muscle weakness, joint pain, and headache. They can also include: stomach ache, poor sleep, disturbances of the central nervous system and the distinctive ‘bull’s eye’ rash. If you or your pet suffer from a number of these symptoms then contact your doctor or your vet. Your vet has two types of products to prevent ticks attaching to your pet & 42

transmitting disease. There are spot on treatments & there is now there is a new flea & tick collar on the market which is very effective. Most of the collars on the market for fleas & ticks are not very effective. Older, Spot On, flea & worm products which contain fipronil can take 24 hours to kill a tick, by then it is usually well attacked to your pet & can take days to drop off, also in that 24 hours they can still transmit disease such as Lyme’s disease. If you see a tick attached to your pet or yourself, it is best to remove it with a specially designed tick remover. Last month we had an article on fleas. This September is likely to be bad for fleas. There have recently been a number of deaths in cats caused products containing permethrin. I strongly
recommend that you do not put any product (flea collars, spot on treatments, powders) which contain permethrin on your cat. Even be careful if putting permethrin on your dog, if there is a chance he will come in contact with cats. Newer products are much safer & more effective. Also Bob Martin Flea collars for pets containing diazinon have voluntarily withdrawn from sale after concerns of illness in people who come into contact with pets wearing these collars. Johnson’s also have a flea collar with diazinon. It is unfortunate that the safer, more effective products can not be advertised as they are classed as POM-V.

Caring comes naturally Love ‘em or loathe ‘em you can’t deny that cats are very good at making babies. That of course is one of the reasons there are so many unwanted cats up and down the country, living in rescues or living wild, eking out a poor existence and causing a nuisance both to cat lovers and cat haters. Here at Yorkshire Cat Rescue we feel very strongly that we – and other rescues which neuter cats – actually help those who dislike cats as much as we help those who do, as of course by neutering we reduce the number of cats out there potentially causing a nuisance to people. Even the most hard-hearted person surely couldn’t fail to be moved by the plight of tiny kittens left without a mum-cat and having to struggle daily to survive, being hand-fed and cared for by humans. Sometimes the answer to helping these little mites is much simpler than two-hourly feeds around the clock – the solution is to find another mum-cat with a small but healthy litter. One of the amazing things about cats is that they are able to transfer their maternity skills to other kittens and raise them successfully. Indeed, in a feral colony, it is not uncommon for a cat to suckle her sisters’, daughters’ or mother’s kittens. This summer we took in Peter, a ten day old kitten who had been found very close to death next to the bodies of his deceased mother and sibling. On the same day we took in Hattie who had been treated cruelly and had all but one of her kittens killed. Still full of milk, Hattie was crying for her lost babies – calling in vain for them to come her. Hearing baby Peter’s mewling, Hattie became desperate and not
Nemo and Peter 44
|
All four together really expecting Peter to survive whatever we did, we felt we had nothing to lose by introducing the two. With a bit of encouragement, Peter soon latched on and began to suckle, and Hattie’s desperate calls diminished. Hattie, Peter and Hattie’s surviving kitten, Nemo went off to a foster home to allow the kittens to grow big enough to re-home. Hattie still continued to cry for more babies (she was witnessed on one occasion calling to a donkey she could see outside the window!), and about a week later she got her wish when we were alerted to a small ginger kitten who had been found in a skip. He was only about 5-6 weeks old and though he was weaned we felt that he really did need some mothering before he went off to a new home. So Hattie was asked if she’d be interested, and of course she leapt at the chance, and Patrick was duly introduced to the little family. We are pleased to say that all three of Hattie’s babies – her own and the two she adopted – survived and went off to new homes recently. It did make for funny photos, as Nemo was about 3 weeks older than Patrick and Patrick was about 3 weeks older than Peter! Community Sport
Wilsden Juniors go from strength to strength By Louise Morgan Wilsden Juniors was formed in 1996 and now has teams ranging from Under 6 to Under 18 and also has it s very own open age adult team Wilsden Athletic. Now with in the region of 150 players it has grown into one of the largest and most successful clubs in the area. The club attracts and welcomes players (male and female) from all surrounding areas. All our team coaches have undertaken formal FA coaching qualifications and are trained first aiders and all key staff and volunteers have completed an enhanced DBS disclosure (formerly CRB). The club is affiliated with West Riding County FA and in 2010 was awarded the prestigious Charter Standard Development Club Of The Year. Club chairman Paul Freethy, who together with Secretary Kirsty Lawn put together this bid, states this award was a significant step forward in progressing the club to the next level and was recognition of our attempts to run a club in the right way. We pride ourselves on showing respect within our club and externally to our fellow clubs in the area. Whilst we love to win, ours is not a ‘win at all costs’ attitude. Our success would not have been possible without the dedication of club committee members and volunteers alike, past and present. We also have some amazing sponsors that support us and our teams, these include Sharma Bingley, Arc Installations, Whitaker and Leach. There are some great sponsorship opportunities available with our age groups and for more information please contact Louise Morgan on the number below. The club is forging on with ambitious ground development plans in more than one location but primarily at our primary home ground at Cuckoo’s Nest in Harden. In the last five years this has seen the building of a club pavilion with catering facilities and a car park at the ground. As well as fantastic football opportunities, we hold plenty of fundraising events which are not only a great opportunity for players, parents, family and friends to get together and support our club, it also raises much needed funds to support us with our ground development, kits, equipment and training facilities. All the support we receive is vital and most appreciated by all at Wilsden Juniors. Our next fundraising event is our annual Halloween party on Sunday 27th October at 3pm to 5pm. Tickets are priced at £3.50 per child and this includes a warm snack and drink. Last years party 54
