Blending his love of art with a career in industrial engineering, David Gray has always had a methodical edge to his work. With a history of metal, mechanics and technology behind him, his passion for nautical themes are heavily present in his artwork.

“I’ve always had a love of boats,” David explains, “if the tide is in with turquoise water, you get reflections and shadows, if the tide is out the boats lean over as if they are drunk on the sand. The boat’s colours, buoys, fishing nets and fishermen are all a pure joy to paint. As a child in the 1960’s I used to have the Eagle comic every week. The artwork was fantastic, and the centre page spread was a cutaway drawing of a ship, plane, lorry or anything mechanical, which I studied on how they were constructed.”

David began a career in technical drawing, from sketching parts for car manuals to boat construction designs. In 1979, David made the decision to live in the West Country. His first stop was a summer in St Ives, “I was very inspired by the artist Ben Maile, who had his shop and studio there, he used the paint in a very loose way. I used to spend time around the harbour sketching boats and selling pen and ink sketchings to people passing by.”

Working in the marine industry for many years in boat construction design, it wasn’t until the late 90’s when David finally started to tutor Creative Art Classes at Truro Arts School and run his own classes.

Today, as a full-time artist, David creates beautiful paintings full of light, reflection and atmosphere, all still incorporating his love for construction and boats. David describes his style as loosely realistic, slightly abstract and with quirky boats.

From moody, misty harbour scenes to bright colourful harbours that look as if they’ve just passed a bought of rain, David’s work evokes a real sense of place and emotion and offers a unique blend between two very different worlds, to create a piece of art that is totally original.

Trudie Moore’s contemporary abstract paintings explore the tension created by control and restraint and the contrast with freedom in the painting process. Her current paintings have luminous fields of colour, transparencies and opacities that act as both a visual and an actual layer over one another, and which are layers upon the surface layer of the canvas. She works in clean, bright colours and fluorescents which allow her to achieve a fresh and pure lightness which lifts the viewer. She has fine art paintings for sale, offers commissions for your home or business and undertakes collaboration projects.
