- 2022 YOUR GUIDE TO A
CORNISH FROM
Welcome to our guide to a Cornish summer 2022. Inside, you’ll find all kinds of ideas for activities to keep you busy, whether you’re a visitor or a local, with family/friends or on your tod. We’ll take you all over Cornwall, from north coast to south, on a whistle-stop tour of outdoor theatre venues, lip-smacking restaurants, ancient sites and theme parks. Our beautiful cover image is the work of illustrator and Falmouth University graduate Jordan Amy Lee, part of a body of work created in collaboration with the Una St Ives resort in Carbis Bay (no 5 on our map) and now part of its permanent collection. If its promise of a hot tub leaves you craving self-indulgence, you might also fancy a sauna with a panoramic view over Watergate Bay (no 1). Don’t forget to keep hydrated, perhaps with an energy drink with quintessential Cornish ingredients (no 2). Looking for somewhere to fill your belly? Check out the tantalising fare on offer in sunny Charlestown (no 20). Would a festival tickle your fancy? Check out worldclass guitarists in Helston (no 10) or young classical musicians in St Austell (no 22). Hotels and heritage, galleries and gift shops – it’s all here. Enjoy the summer – and I’d love to hear what you did, so send me a digital postcard at kirstie@mycornwall.tv Oll an gwella (all the best)

SAUNA SOCIETY, WATERGATE BAY Sauna Society is a brand-new wood-fired sauna experience in Cornwall. Set in beautiful coastal locations overlooking the ocean with uninterrupted views over sea, the first of the collection launched in June 2022 and is perched on the cliffs of Watergate Bay. From October, the sauna will move to
another incredible beachside location: Gyllyngvase beach in Falmouth. On a mission to promote health, wellbeing and community, Sauna Society was founded by friends Anthony and Damian, with the aim to foster a community alongside the ocean, using saunas as a way of bringing people
together. The sauna can seat up to 10 people, and visitors to Sauna Society can hire the space privately or join a communal session. For more information or to book, please visit: www.sauna-society.com

OUTDOOR THEATRE
When it comes to open-air theatre in Cornwall, as the song goes: “Nobody does it better.” The 2022 season offers fairytales on the beach, proms on the cliffs, Dickens in the garden and Shakespeare – well, just about everywhere. The Bard is always a good bet, and this season you can see Much Ado About Nothing and Twelfth Night at Penlee Park, Penzance; A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Ebbingford Manor, near Bude, and Penlee Park again; The Tempest and The Merry Wives of Windsor at The Minack; Richard III at Trebah Garden; and Miracle Theatre’s adaptation of King Lear, which travels all over
Cornwall: St Agnes Beacon, Bodmin Moor, St Ives, Enys Gardens and even the Isles of Scilly.
Looking for family fun? Consider David Walliams’ Awful Auntie (Sterts, near Liskeard), Chapterhouse Theatre’s Cinderella (Bedruthan Hotel, Mawgan Porth) or Squashbox Theatre (Penlee Park, Penzance and The Minack). For something uniquely Cornish, try Rogue Theatre in Tehidy Woods on the north coast, or on the south coast at Carlyon Beach, check out I Am Kevin, the latest offering from the large-scale outdoor theatre supremos at Wildworks Theatre.
Some top-line advice: • Take a picnic (remember some fizz for the non-drivers); • Take cushions or garden chairs to avoid a numb bum (but be considerate of the view of other audience members); • Pack a few blankets, as it will cool as the sun goes down; • Be prepared for all types of weather - unless extreme conditions pose danger to life, the show will go on come rain or shine, so pack a sun cream and a raincoat! So there you have it. Your only problem will be how many productions you can fit into one summer.
MIRACLE THEATRE This summer, Cornwall’s Miracle Theatre presents Shakespeare’s most elemental and passionate play: King Lear, in a fresh and fast-paced adaptation, pared down to its bare essentials and performed by a cast of five. This is a shocking yet tender story of ageing and madness, fuelled by ambition and fired by betrayal. Shakespeare loved to weave theatrical magic out of tragedy in a way that is never far from farce, making King Lear ripe for Miracle’s offbeat treatment! www.miracletheatre.co.uk/tour-dates Photo by Kirstin Prisk
PENLEE PARK OPEN AIR THEATRE The theatre in the park in the heart of Penzance, Penlee Park Open Air Theatre has been running summer shows since 1948 and its 2022 season boasts over 80 events. August highlights include Illyria with Peter Pan and perennial favourite The Pirates of Penzance; Heartbreak Theatre with Jane Eyre; and the ever-popular Company B and 3 Daft Monkeys! There is a licensed bar and pre-show hot food is available to order with your tickets. www.penleeparktheatre.com
BEDRUTHAN HOTEL, MAWGAN PORTH Make yourself comfortable on the lawn at this funky hotel, with a fabulous backdrop of the Atlantic coast. Shows include Heartbreak Productions’ Much Ado About Murder on August 16, as well as fairy tales Rapunzel (Immersion Theatre) on August 12 and Cinderella (Chapterhouse Theatre) on August 23. www.bedruthan.com

NOVA CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL Enjoy three wonderful evenings of exciting and diverse repertoire, performed by young Cornish musicians in the beautiful Wheal Martyn Museum near St Austell. This year’s NOVA festival moves away from the conventional string quartet and embraces less appreciated instrument
combinations, encompassing both large ensembles such as quintets and sextets, and smaller groups like string trios and duos. The programmes include staple works of the string repertoire, alongside more neglected works by composers including Martinu and Dohnanyi. The bar opens
for drinks and snacks at 6pm, and performances start at 7pm; why not have a G&T in the sun on the terrace beforehand? Tickets £14 per performance (£6 for under 26), or buy a three-day festival pass for all performances for £35. T: 07951 960647 www.novaclassicalfestival
