SUMMER 2022 ISSUE 18 Summertime is here, and with it come the lively crowds of Kernowphiles, heading west for their seasonal fix of sun, sand and sea. Many will also seek sanctuary in the arts; as I write, we are in the middle of a heatwave, and the prospect of diving into a cool, shady gallery has never been more appealing. For so many visitors, Cornwall’s culture is its principal pull. From the Newlyn School to the Leach Pottery, the Duchy is rich in history and creative genius. Painting, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, glass, jewellery – it’s all here, infused with the fresh, salty air that makes Cornwall so special. From Downderry on the south-east coast to Bude on the north, via Morvah in the far west, here is a selection of some of the best galleries and artists in Cornwall, all of whom are looking forward to welcoming you through their doors. EBENEZER GALLERY, POLPERRO The Ebenezer Gallery is in Polperro’s main street and holds a long summer exhibition from April to October. This spacious old chapel exhibits work from some 50 members of East Cornwall Society of Artists Ltd, including paintings in acrylics, oils, pastels and watercolours as well as ceramics, wood turning, jewellery and stained glass. A NEW SCULPTURE FOR ST AUSTELL The Austell Project’s Whitegold Ceramic Art Trail has been completed with the arrival of the UK’s tallest ceramic sculpture: Earth Goddess by artist Sandy Brown, which stands at 11.5m high. The striking form in Aylmer Square is made from five large circles of clay, resembling giant ceramic beads on a metal pole, with outstretched arms 6m wide, all decorated with drops and flashes of bright colour. “It’s my hope this sculpture celebrates the town’s history and represents our collective and eternal roots with the environment, nature,

and Mother Earth,” said Sandy. The trail is made up of 18 bespoke ceramic commissions created by leading artists to express the town’s connection to its industrial China clay landscape, fondly dubbed “the Cornish Alps”.

A new exhibition at Wheal Martyn Clay Works, near St Austell, recalls how artist luminaries were commissioned to design affordable everyday tableware in 1934. Sir William Rothenstein, principal of the Royal College of Art, hoped to revolutionise attitudes towards the relationship between art, design and industry. Each artist would be paid £10 per design plus royalties, and they visited ceramic factories to learn the techniques required to translate their work on paper into the finished product. Among the 27 participants were Laura Knight, Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson; the diverse and striking ceramics they designed were exhibited in Harrods of London and department stores across the country before touring internationally, with pieces now in museum collections around the world. THE OLD WORKSHOP The Old Workshop is a wonderful historic building next to the main car park at Charlestown, near St Austell. Converted from an old gunpowder store and extensively refurbished, it houses three very interesting businesses: The Craft Kiln: a showcase for Cornish Crafts, where you can meet the makers and purchase a unique handmade gift. Sail Loft Emporium: housing a fine array of antiques, collectables, vintage and retro items, with around 50 cabinets and stalls all under one roof. Cscape Art: the gallery and studio of artist Sarah Blakey and her

photographer husband, Mick. SAWPIT STUDIO, HELIGAN September at the Sawpit Studio, Heligan is a great time for taking inspiration from the plants around us. Looking at Leaves in Botanical Watercolour (September 20 to 23) is a four-day workshop with Laura Silburn, using the best plant material the season can offer at this dedicated botanical art studio in the middle of the beautiful Lost Gardens. NEW GALLERY, PORTSCATHO The New Gallery is the home of a society of artists founded in 1984, including some of the biggest names in contemporary art in Cornwall and beyond (the name reflects its move to larger premises in 2000). The gallery opens three days a week and is run by artists, who work in the upstairs studio and enjoy meeting customers. They include Chris and Andrea

Insoll, Trevor Felcey, Eric Ward, Daniel Holmes Adams, Ann Long, Lizzie Black, John Birch, Howard Milton, Lynne Cartlidge and Andrew Tozer, not forgetting the late Grace Gardner. A captivating visual collaboration between Cornish artists and Londonbased writers was launched in June and runs online for three months. Synesthesia II showcases the work of 10 artists from Cornwall and Scilly and investigates the way we experience art remotely using the power of words and conversations. This experimental exhibition is a response to the context of lockdown during the global pandemic, and also addresses the challenges faced by artists outside of urban centres. Five participating writers were each partnered with two artists to create collaborative pieces. Spearheaded by independent gallery owners Vicki Glaister (Inspire Makers) and Ann Morgan (Morgans), Form (September 30 to October 2) is a new annual festival celebrating the visual arts in Cornwall. It will offer a series of events such as talks, workshops and exhibitions in venues across the town, including in a three-day art fair at Princess Pavilion. Five Falmouth primary schools have welcomed local artists to collaborate with pupils on work in a variety of disciplines, to be displayed in shop windows during the festival. Participating artists are ceramicist Lucy Joines, printmaker Dena O’Brien, multi-disciplinary contemporary artist Rachael Kinmond and painters Kitty Hillier and Laura Menzies. LUCY INNES WILLIAMS

PAUL BURSNALL, CONSTANTINE Paul Bursnall lives and works in Constantine, near Falmouth, having moved to Cornwall from Buckinghamshire in March 2021. He is a member of the Association of British Naïve Artists (ABNA), and his paintings are done in this style using blocks of colour and heavy outlines. Paul has been represented by 60 UK galleries and has sold over 2,000 original paintings around the world, especially in the USA

and Ireland. In 2019 he was selected for the Pebeo Mixed Media Exhibition ‘100 Years, 100 Countries and 100 Artists’ which was held in London. Falmouth floral artist Lucy Innes Williams is running a series of workshops in September. Lucy works primarily in gouache and inks on paper and board; coastal path walks along the cliffs of west Cornwall are a primary source of inspiration, as are the busy borders of English country gardens. Kestle Barton is an ancient Cornish farmstead situated above the Helford River. The gallery, garden and wildflower meadow beyond host a programme of free exhibitions and other visitor events each year, from early April to late October. Gustav Metzger’s Earth Minus Environment (until September 4) aims to give dramatic visual form to the visible and invisible tensions in our relationship with the natural world. At its heart is Mobbile (1970/2022), a modified second-hand car that collects and stores its own carbon emissions in a transparent cube fixed onto its roof. Previously based in Penryn, Brickworks has re-opened within the artist studios at CAST in Helston. Led by ceramicist and artist Rosanna Martin, Brickworks provides courses and workshops for those wanting to work with clay for the first time or learn new techniques, as well as memberships and sessions for more experienced makers seeking open access to top-end equipment and expertise. St Michael’s Mount has commissioned illustrator Jennifer Armitage to portray the iconic island using her trademark abstract and bold technique. As well as immortalising the castle, causeway and ferry boats, Jennifer has immortalised the flora of the sub-tropical gardens - spiral aloe, agaves, echiums and agapanthus – as well as the swooping swallows that visit the mount in midsummer. Jennifer, who is based in West Penwith, said: “My illustration reflects how I perceive the Mount as a magical and enchanting Cornish landmark, bursting with life, nature, stories and beauty.” The original work will sit in the Island Café and will be reproduced will on a range of exclusive lifestyle products for the island’s shop. PENLEE HOUSE GALLERY & MUSEUM, PENZANCE Born in Birmingham, Walter Langley is generally known as the ‘Pioneer of the Newlyn School’, as he was the first of the Newlyn School artists to settle in the village, setting up his studio in 1882. Although Langley was accomplished in oils, he mainly painted in watercolour, often on a large scale. Using this demanding and difficult medium, he portrayed scenes of everyday life in a small fishing village, highlighting the hardships and tragedies that were commonplace during that

period. This exhibition, commemorating the centenary of Langley’s birth, includes over 60 works spanning his career. MARTIN JOHN FOWLER Martin travels extensively around Britain’s coastal areas, capturing the natural world and the towns and harbours that have a deep-rooted relationship with the sea. He can be typically found interpreting and capturing Cornwall’s wild and bustling coastal areas, immersing himself in the elements and life of the community. Martin was born and raised in the mining towns of South Yorkshire but has spent much of the last 20 years in Cornwall, and as a result, his rich and vivid works have gained significant recognition amongst Cornwall’s artistic communities. He studied painting and printmaking in Sheffield gaining

a BA(Hons) in Fine Art, and has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, in solo and mixed exhibitions. His bold colour palette and fluid style depict an intense sense of dynamism in his subjects from windswept, rugged landscapes to busy harbours docked with fishing vessels. The Prevailing Sense Change collection is an ongoing project to capture the change in working ports from personal childhood memories to the present day. InfrAbandoned is an exhibition of infrared photos taken of Cornwall’s magnificent mining heritage. “The human eye cannot see infrared light but a converted camera can, allowing a glimpse into an invisible world,” says photographer Barnaby Attwell. “Depending on the filter used, the effect can be ghostly and haunting, or garish and surreal - I love both.” Photographs are on display until August at the Red River Cafe in Heartlands, Pool - once one of the wealthiest places in the world as the centre for mining in Cornwall. ------------------------------------------Open daily, 9am to 4pm.

MESKLA, REDRUTH MESKLA - Brewyon Drudh (Mussel Gathering - Precious Fragments) is a new public art project exploring what it means to be Cornish in 2022.
