Hello my name’s Vivien and I’m from the beautiful county of Kent, England though currently living and working near Rome in delightful Italy with its exciting, lively way of life and vibrant colours and designs. I started out as an artist in 1982 developing Indian ink artwork of a variety of subjects especially figurative artwork and abstract floral designs, then progressed into creative photography and digital artistry thanks to Sebastian Michael’s amazing courses at ‘Photoshop Artistry’ and the advanced course ‘Awake’. My inspiration is drawn from my love of nature, figurative artwork and Italian design using many textures, patterns and colours. I’m thrilled to have some of my artwork in various publications including: Living the Photo Artistic Life, My Creative Images and have had various artworks mentioned in the Shift Art Challenge. Claude Trew I am a retired lady who is a keen photographer and I belong to a local camera club. However, while I enjoy entering the competitions organised by the club, I feel that the style of photographs that are most successful in club competitions is inhibiting my creative output. I am following some online courses to try to improve the artist in me. So far I have enjoyed every course I have done and hope to share my work with a bigger audience. This is an ongoing process.

Artists of every genre have the freedom to evolve their own muse as fancy takes them. This month I was taken by the tulips at the various National Trust gardens I visited on a recent trip tp the Welsh borders. The beautiful arrangements hit me as a potential for some impressionist studies, and from good quality photographs I evolved a style the I feel suits these lovely flowers. Hello! I’m Bernie and I live in the little seaside town of Margate and having lived here all my life, I couldn’t live anywhere else now! I’m continually inspired by the scenery here, with skies and light that so excited famous artist J.W.Turner, who said of this area, “…the skies over Thanet are the loveliest in all Europe”. Apparently, a love of the sea stayed with him all his life and I can well understand that! Painting with light holds a real attraction for me - the gentle light that is still strong enough to dispel darkness. I’ve always been arty, progressing from childhood sketching, through gouache and then oil painting, then paper crafting and scrapbooking which led me to digital scrapbooking and finally to Sebastian Michaels and Photo Artistry. I love being able to go to nature reserves as it gives me both peace and also photo opportunities. This month it is a great pleasure to interview one of our wonderful photo artists Susan Jones from Southend in Essex. Susan’s artwork is best described in her own words: “My work is a mix of Photography and Photoshop. Landscapes and portraits” In this month’s issue she is going to share some of her creative processes with our readers:
Do you consider yourself a photographer or a photo artist? Its hard to say as I love both. Having said that I do alter or process all of my pictures before sharing, even if its just enhancing the light on a landscape or portrait.
When did you first become interested in photography and photo art? Many moons ago when I was in school, I chose to be in the photography class, unfortunately I got asked to leave as I didn’t own my own camera. For years I would only take pictures of views if a person was in the frame and you couldn’t take too many as you had to pay to have them developed. About 30 years ago I learned cake decorating and bought my first SLR to take ‘professional’ pictures of the cakes I had created to show prospective clients. Then maybe 15 years ago my husband bought me photoshop for Christmas. At the time I had elderly dogs and I learned a few of the tools at night while they roamed in the garden. My first creation was an album for a friends daughter one of which she was dressing her climbing frame in the garden and I turned it into her dressing a lion. Then my dogs died and I went to work full time and became involved in Sound Therapy, I still kept using my camera but I stopped using Photoshop. Till I took an evening course on how to use my camera which turned out to be all about photoshop! Then, I have no idea how, but I stumbled on The Photo Artistry courses and haven’t looked back
Have you been influenced by other photographers or artists? I love Brooke Shaden, I think of her as a shamanic healer through her photo artistry, teaching people to heal their wounds through photography and photo shop. Gail Edwards work fascinates me, I stumbled on her in flickr a few years back, she makes woman look amazing. Ellen McDermot, I love her simplistic way of working.

Can you tell us a bit about your creative process and routine? I find I work best after a photo shoot and have lots of lovely new images to work on. When it’s a model shoot I start off cleaning the skin and bringing the model and the colours to life. Then once the portrait is finished and saved I start creating with the same image, I search for overlays and objects to include in the picture and tend to work into the small hours till I have finished.
Could you tell us about the equipment and software you use and which item is indispensable in your studio? I use a Canon 6D and usually use the lens 24 to 105mm I find it so much easier to zoom in and out as I need rather than a fixed lens I use Adobe Bridge, Camera Raw and Photoshop, I did use Lightroom for about 2 years but wasn’t as keen on it as some seem to be, once I changed back to camera raw I felt much more at home. Don’t ask me why as I know they are both very similar. I also love Alien Skin and Topaz for ideas to add to or finish the image. I struggle with Wacom, as I don’t work at a desk, I slouch on the settee, so its hard to balance and use the laptop at the same time. I got an ipad pro for Christmas as I was of the understanding that Photoshops full version would be released for using on the ipad this year, I’m still waiting, I did buy 3D LUT Creator a few months back as I really want to get into colour grading but am not a technical wizard and am having trouble getting it to stay where I can find it!
What’s the next step in your artistic life? My next project is to do a photo-shoot with coloured gels. I really want to learn about colour and make my pictures much more colourful.
What would your advice be to an aspiring photographer/digital photo artist? Watch lots of tutorials but do what they are teaching, do anything as long as you use the tools they are showing you. Its all very well to know what it is they are doing but to really embed it in your muscle memory you have to actually do it for yourself. Shift art have lots of tutorials and you can download everything to follow along, some are not so easy but its excellent for learning.

I am a digital artist, writer and poet from beautiful Northern Ireland. I currently live in County Down, within sight of the majestic Mourne Mountains. I have been an enthusiastic photographer for many years but it was only when I discovered digital art that I finally felt able to create images that reflected both my emotions and vision. Every day I work towards improving my skills within the fascinating world of the digital workspace. For me it’s a place of magic, a place where I can give free reign to my imagination and create the type of art I feel connected to. About eighteen months ago I began to combine my new digital skills with my poetry and have recently published my first illustrated poetry book, Thunder In My Soul: a collection of illustrated poems. James is a photo digital artist that captures landscapes photographs as well as painterly portraits either in the comfort of his home or on location. He is based in Huntingdon, near Cambridge, and has a passion for incorporating his emotions and frustrations into surreal artwork as well as creating landscapes and portraits. James is a self-taught photographer who has learnt photoshop by taking a number of online course hosted by Sebastian Michaels. His work has received a number of awards from the Heaven art gallery in the USA during September and October of 2017, since then he has had artwork appear in a new conceptual virtual art gallery created by Curat10n Open Art and in the My Creative Images magazine. James’s current focus switched from submitting work to gallery’s to further explore and enhance his photography skills and further develop his own photo digital artistic style which incorporates lots of colour and / or textures. As a photo digital artist his customers come from two distinct groups, those that want a portrait photograph taken and then blended into a scene and those that want some unique artwork to decorate their home or office. Both have one thing in common, they are looking for something different, something created specially for them, something that they can be proud to hang on their wall and show off on their social media pages, such as the example shown here.
