It loves images whose meaning is unknown, since the meaning of the mind itself is unknown.” ~ Rene Magritte This month sees a bumper issue of artwork and photography, with interviews from two artists with different styles and approaches to their work for you to enjoy. As with most journeys the are many changes of direction and focus as to the reason to create art. I find myself switching between the pure excitement of creating bold brash images from dull bland photographs to creating dark understand artwork to help clear my mind of confusing emotional states. This is very apparent when you see the switch in style of my self portrait series, the initial work is shown on the opposite page and more recent images are shown on pages 53-56. The creative mind is a wonderful and exciting thing and all the artwork in this months magazine comes from deep inside each of the artists minds, hearts and souls. As a reminder, the sole purpose of this magazine is to showcase photo digital artwork from emerging and established artists from the UK and Europe. Artists can showcase their work in the magazine at no cost and have a link one of their social media pages, blogs or websites. Many of our contributors are photographers as well as photo artists. In the next few months we are going to highlight on this aspect. This month we are delighted to interview David Walker for some insights on his photography. -----
How long have you been a photographer and what is your main genre? I started when I was 16 at 6th form college, going around Liverpool, particularly the dock areas with a Box Brownie and B&W film. I enjoyed those days and took some interesting images, but not interesting enough as my Mum threw out the pictures as part of a clear out when moving home. How I regret that! Move forward all but 50 years when I decided to retire and bought myself a Canon Digital Camera and lenses. In the meantime, I had taken less sophisticated cameras on holidays and business trips and enjoyed playing with photography! My main genre is ‘scapes, whether they be city, land or sea! I shy away from portraits in both PhotoArt and photography, this genre just does not appeal to me, but I will play
around occasionally. In my ‘scape work I do like to have people, usually anonymous, as part of the image particularly in cityscapes. -----
What kind of photographic gear do you use and which is your favourite lens? I have recently converted from Canon to Sony moving from the rather bulky Canon 1D Mk3 to the Sony A7. I have just two lenses for my Sony the 50mm/1.8 (nice and light and pocket size) and the 24-240/3.56.3 (bulky but versatile) both of which easily cover my present photographic needs. My favourite on that day depends on my shooting intentions! -----
What steps do you take as a photographer to make sure that the thing, person or landscape you want to shoot looks the way you want it to?

I begin with the end in mind, usually my PhotoArt images. I try to visualise how my final work will look and compose my shot accordingly. It is wise to take in
more with the original shot than you may need as it is easy to crop down, impossible to crop up! If a shot feels particularly good I may bracket (usually +/- 2Ds) to make sure I have enough room in the darks and highlights to reach the desired goal. My adopted mantra (stolen from Blake Rudis) is to think, “Tone, Colour & Artistic Effects” for each image during both shooting and post production. If you can feel or see a “story” about the image then you are well on the way to producing great art (photographic or digital!) -----
In the field, what are your settings? I always shoot in RAW (it gives much greater versatility in post production) and tend to shoot in the semi automatic mode, Aperture Priority with ISO as low as possible. The camera is normally set to f8, ISO200 and this often meets most of my requirements, although it is easy to alter to meet different conditions. -----
From your point of view, what makes a good picture? The story behind the shot…and whether the shot tells the story. “You don’t take a photograph, you make it.” “You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.” Both quotes by Ansel Adams.
Nowadays almost everyone has access to devices to take photographs. Do you use any of them? The iPhone and iPad are part of my armoury, but I generally use these for no more than record shots or to give precise location using the GPS! I really love the ability use my pixels, and the smaller devices often are a compromise. I also love producing large canvasses (perhaps 1200mm by 800mm) and those works do need pixels!

What do you think is the difference between a professional photographer and a hobby photographer? I will quote from Anon, “One is not Professional Photographer because one is paid but rather because one is professional in the art and dealing with subjects. There are many paid photographers who are paid for their work and are not professional.” And finish with a quote by Vernon Trent “Amateurs worry about equipment, professionals worry about time, masters worry about light.” I consider myself as an unpaid professional, although I do make a small income from selling canvases! -----
Do you have a favourite photographer past or present? Ansel Adams is a good starting point! For modern digital photographers I admire Blake Rudis and Jim Welninski both for their photography and for their photographic passion but more so their willingness to share their skills with others. -----
What, in your opinion, is most important to consider while shooting portrait pictures? To find out what the subject really wants and produce it for them, even if you have to use a lot of post production techniques to achieve it. That is probably why I do not really like taking portraits! -----

Do you have special editing software you usually use for post-production? Now this is where I could write a book! There is only one real source of photographic post production Adobe Light Room (or its sister Adobe Camera Raw) and Adobe Photoshop. The CC package at £10 (or so) a month is a real investment. Much cheaper than paying for annual updates. The real power is understanding these programs and developing a sensible and structured workflow. Back to my adopted mantra “Tone, Colour & Artistic Effects”. Blake Rudis has developed a series of Presets for Lightroom (or ACR) which means you can quickly arrive at a polished image using a sensible workflow. These Presets are workflow based and allow you to fully develop towards your ideal image unlike most presets which are based on photographic emulation. Blake has also developed two exciting Photoshop add ons Zone System Express and Palette Effects. Using these intuitive add ons you can easily work in any of the 11 different tones described by Ansel Adams and any of the 6 colours of the digital colour wheel (RYGCBM) to give you the photograph you saw when you took the image, not the interpretation your camera decided to give you! ZSE and PE give you a lot more than these two important aspects, that is another story! Once purchased they are your to keep with a life time guarantee of free updates. For my PhotoArt I always start with as good a photograph as I can then use Photoshop, Topaz and Corel Painter to develop the final piece as my imagination and artistry sees it! Ansel Adams said “A great photograph is a full expression of what one feels about what is being photographed in the deepest sense and is thereby a true expression of what one feels about life in its entirety.” The same can be said about my PhotoArt. -----
When you go on one of your travels, what will you take with you? I take three cameras, my Sony AR7, Canon G16 and iPhone (or iPad), Tripod, simple lens filters (circular polariser & ND4 filter), a speed light flash, spare batteries (essential with mirrorless cameras) and cards and most importantly the camera’s instruction manual. These are for serious trips, if I am determined to travel light the Sony AR7, the 50mm lens and spare batteries. -----

Hello my name’s Vivien and I’m from the beautiful county of Kent, England though currently living on the coast near Rome in delightful Italy with its exciting, lively way of life and vibrant colours and designs. I started out as an artist in 1982 developing Indian ink artwork of a variety of subjects especially figurative artwork and abstract floral designs, then progressed into creative photography and digital artistry thanks to Sebastian Michael’s amazing courses at ‘Photoshop Artistry’ and the advanced courses ‘Awake’ and ‘Kaizen’. My inspiration is drawn from my love of nature, figurative artwork and Italian design using many textures, patterns and colours. I’m thrilled to have some of my artwork in various publications including: Living the Photo Artistic Life, My Creative Images and have had various artworks mentioned in the Shift Art Challenge and was thrilled to win the challenge with a piece called ‘The Mysterious Cobbled Street’ in 2018. Now in 2020 I am concentrating on a series of Fresco-style Art taking my inspiration from Italian Frescos. This involves a lot of patterns, swirls, designs and colours and adding them to the model. Hello! I’m Bernie and I live in the little seaside town of Margate and having lived here all my life, I couldn’t live anywhere else now! I’m continually inspired by the scenery here, with skies and light that so excited famous artist J.W.Turner, who said of this area, “…the skies over Thanet are the loveliest in all Europe”. Apparently, a love of the sea stayed with him all his life and I can well understand that! Painting with light holds a real attraction for me - the gentle light that is still strong enough to dispel darkness. I’ve always been arty, progressing from childhood sketching, through gouache and then oil painting, then paper crafting and scrapbooking which led me to digital scrapbooking and finally to Sebastian Michaels and Photo Artistry. I am a digital artist, writer and poet from beautiful Northern Ireland. I currently live in County Down, within sight of the majestic Mourne Mountains. I have been an enthusiastic photographer for many years but it was only when I discovered digital art that I finally felt able to create images that reflected both my emotions and vision. Every day I work towards improving my skills within the fascinating world of the digital workspace. For me it’s a place of magic, a place where I can give free reign to my imagination and create the type of art I feel connected to. About eighteen months ago I began to combine my new digital skills with my poetry and have recently published my first illustrated poetry book, Thunder In My Soul: a collection of illustrated poems. I have made art in various forms for many years and love the creative life. My vision is to inspire and to make the viewer wonder. I love to create surreal images that are sometimes dark and sometimes whimsical. There is often a lot of personal feelings in my art, it is my voice and my way of sharing. These works are self portraits imagined in my mind’s eye. While the images do not depict actual experiences, they illustrate my dreams. I create them from several photos taken at many locations. Claude Trew I am a retired lady who is a keen photographer and I belong to a local camera club. However, while I enjoy entering the competitions organised by the club, I feel that the style of photographs that are most successful in club competitions is inhibiting my creative output. I am following some online courses to try to improve the artist in me. So far I have enjoyed every course I have done and hope to share my work with a bigger audience. This is an ongoing process.

I retired in 2017 and am able to spend my time doing all the things I enjoy. I am a hobby photographer and particularly enjoy going to nature reserves with my cameras hunting for bugs. I am trying to learn more about birds but bugs will always be my love. I have always enjoyed playing about with my photos and after taking part in some challenges in a 365 photo project, I was told about the Photoshop artistry course. I signed up not long before I retired and in the following January, I also signed up for the AWAKE course. I found myself getting interested in creating things to use in my photoart and this reawakened my love of multi media art and I have been concentrating more on that recently. Going into the new decade, I want to bring my photography, photoart and multi media art together and to do that I have decided to do both bullet and art journals. I have also started a new blog on Wordpress which I hope to do regular updates on. How long have you been a photographer and what is your main genre? Although I love getting out and about with my camera, anywhere from poppy fields to old ruins, I seem to be doing more in studios at the moment, where its dry and warm. Though I don’t think the models would always agree that its warm. I’m pretty lucky that there’s a couple of studios near me that do modelling days so the cost is reasonable, you can pay for as little as a 20 minute session, but I usually get an hour and do a couple of costume changes. If you look at my Instagram, sulisloveswater, it is mainly portraits. I do try to pull back and get full length shots but I mainly end up with portraits. I love it when the model looks right into the camera and you get that connection when looking at the final picture.
When I do get out and about its mainly in London, the time just flies by and no matter how cold it is as soon as you place that camera to your eye everything disappears, the cold, the hunger the pain of carrying a heavy camera. It’s just what you’re seeing through that viewfinder. -----
What kind of photographic gear do you use and which is your favourite lens? My camera, just having cleared out my wardrobe there’s a few bits and bobs that haven’t even been out of the box. When it comes down to it all you need is your camera. And Photoshop. I love Photoshop and watch thousands of tutorials on how other people are using the tools and what I can do with my photos to enhance them or bring them more to life. Sometimes I work on them into the night unable to go to bed till they’re finished. -----
What steps do you take as a photographer to
make sure that the thing, person or landscape you want to shoot looks the way you want it to? I will take screen shots of any model poses I see on the internet to show the model, and bring along an outfit for them, mask, flowers, props. When setting up the shot a moment just speaks to you, your panning a view or the model is moving in different poses and your heart jumps at a special moment that you see in the viewfinder. Sometimes you have to try to get the model to go back and try to re enact that moment. Then in Photoshop I use frequency separation 2.0 by Earth Oliver, on the models skin. Dodge and burn the highlights and shadows, sharpen to sharpen the eyes and any jewellery, then I may try Alienskin for some toning. Sometimes I like to put a bit of blue in the shadows instead of pure black. -----
In the field, what are your settings? I start at F8, ISO 100 and 120th of a second and see how it goes from there, this Christmas I wanted to shoot a model with Christmas lights it was hard to shoot in the dark and get the small lights to be bright. The settings for those pictures were F1.8 - 1/30 - ISO100. thank God for Photoshop to bring out the lights and enhance them. Recently while on a trip to the Fern Islands I did use aperture priority mode, as advised to me by a great bird photographer that was on the trip too. To be honest I rarely think to put the camera on one of the assisted modes even if I’m struggling to get the shot I want. -----
From your point of view, what makes a good picture? The pictures I just cant take my eyes off of are those with depth of field, I just love the sharpness of the flower or eye and the rest falls out of focus. Never fails to fascinate me. -----
Nowadays almost everyone has access to devices to take photographs. Do you use any of them? I really want to get a Polaroid camera. Instead of getting one I opted for a small printer that would print my iphone pictures, but I never use it. Should have just got what I wanted in the first place. I have also upgraded to iphone 11 with the three lenses. I love my mobile phone and take lots of photos with it. I always say my camera has a phone in it as the camera is the most important part for me. I did buy the tiny lenses to use on iphones but again these are still in the box. -----
What do you think is the difference between a professional photographer and a hobby photographer? Getting paid :D sometimes I wonder what is the point, but I guess most artists struggle with that one, you just got to create what you’ve got to create.
I know you have landscape photographers and travel photographers but I guess a lot of professional photographers are told what the person paying wants from the image, so although you have some artistic licence I would say the client has the last say. Whereas a hobby photographer does what pleases them. -----
Do you have a favourite photographer past or present? At the moment I am watching all of Peter Coulsons videos, a portrait photographer. I love Serge Ramelli’s tutorials, amazing to see the before and after Photoshop/Lightroom, his results are just WOW. I love Lyndsey Adler’s work, stunning colours and the finish to her portraits is what I am striving for. The same with Jake Hicks, I love their use of gels. -----
What, in your opinion, is most important to consider while shooting portrait pictures? For me its having fun, I love to get the girls relaxed and laughing, enjoying the shoot and going from there. I rarely have an end image in mind, I may have an outfit I take along with me and a few pictures that other photographers have taken that caught my eye, but the shoot is usually very fluid. I will show the model a picture and we make that a starting point, I don’t like to make the picture exactly the same, start with an idea and see where it goes. I always like to include the model looking straight on at the camera with their head tilted slightly down. -----
Do you have a special editing software you usually use for post-production? Photoshop, for some reason I never got on with Lightroom, I can use it but went back to Bridge. I could do with learning more about Lightroom I guess but just didn’t gel with it. -----
When you go on one of your travels, what all you take with you? The boot of my car has everything in it, when I have to carry it that’s a different matter, as little as possible and usually just my camera even the tripod usually gets left behind, which is a shame, especially if there is water around. It is lovely to get those longer exposures but im just too lazy to be bothered with extra stuff to carry. Maybe I should bet an electric golf bag.

I have been producing art in various forms for over 30 years. I have worked in many different media, from watercolour to ink, graphite, and coloured pencil. Krista is a graphic designer, artist and award-winning photographer, based out of Wilmington, Ohio. She is by nature what most would call a true creative talent. Krista has a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Visual Communications along with an Associates Degree in Interior Design. Evident throughout her work, Krista’s innate perspective of plain objects have been brought to life and fused together with texture, color, and original elements in a way like no other. James is a photo digital artist that captures landscapes photographs as well as painterly portraits either in the comfort of his home or on location. He is based in Huntingdon, near Cambridge, and has a passion for incorporating his emotions and frustrations into surreal artwork. James is a self-taught photographer who has learnt Photoshop by taking a number of online course hosted by Sebastian Michaels. His current focus is to further explore and enhance his photography skills and further develop his own photo digital artistic style which can incorporate lots of colour and textures employing a Chiaro-oscuro style but also a darker monochromatic approach, as with his self portrait series of images shown on the following pages. The aim is to produce artwork and photographs that lean more towards a painterly or surreal feel than a realistic photograph. During Feb and March two pieces of James work received Special Recognition awards from the Light, Space & Time gallery one of which was featured in this magazine last month. Help Me Plant Trees! I took this photograph in October this year on Patterdale Hall Estate (PHE), Ullswater. This is a small section of a waterfall that runs through private land actively managed with the help of many volunteers. If it was possible, I would be there helping the conservation work every weekend, but sadly its not.
