Another store leaving Greenville GREENVILLE – JC Penney has announced it will be RYAN closing its BERRY Greenville Managing Editor bluebagmedia.com store on or around April 4. Carter English, a spokesman for JC Penney, said, “We continually evaluate our store portfolio to determine whether there’s a need to close or relocate underperforming stores. Reviews such as these are

essential in meeting our long-term goals for future company growth. While it’s never an easy decision to close stores, especially due to the impact on our valued associates and customers, we feel this is a necessary business decision.” Greenville Mayor Mike Bowers said 56 employees will be affected by the closing. There are 10 full-time employees, including the hair salon. “Eligible associates

who do not remain with the company will receive separation benefits, and, if possible, we will assist associates in identifying other job opportunities at nearby JCPenney stores. Additionally, we’re offering all associates an on-site career training class. The class will assist associates in writing resumes, filling out applications, answering interview questions and more,” said English. Mayor Bowers was disappointed with the

news, but vowed to work with Tolson Enterprises, owner of the building, to attract a new business. “Big box stores have certain numbers they want to reach and they have shown they will close down a store if they don’t reach them,” he said. In addition to the Greenville store, JC Penney is expected to close stores in Springfield and at the Eastland Mall in Columbus. Both of those stores have 80 or more employees, each.

Audit shows Early Bird exceeds national average

Faber elected to second term as Senate President COLUMBUS – “Being an effective senator would be impossible BOB ROBINSON without the Associate Editor support of bluebagmedia.com your family,” newly re-elected Ohio Senate President Keith Faber (Dist. 12, R) told 32 senators and their families during the opening ceremonies of the 131st General Assembly. He noted the lost time with children, the bedtime stories not read, sporting events missed. “The sacrifice is not only yours… it is your family’s.” He said the oath they took was not to a party or an individual, it was to the State of Ohio. It was to provide the best place to live – and the best possible opportunity – to every child in the state. He added there were two reasons he is doing what he does… his children, Adam and Brooke. Faber had just been elected to his second term as Senate President and will finish his constitutional term limit in that office, as well as that of a state senator, on Dec. 31, 2016. He has held the gavel of the upper chamber since January 2013. The opening ceremonies were called to order by Faber as the senate president of the recent 130th General Assembly. Following roll call, all 33 senators took the Oath of Office. The oath was administered to 23

GREENVILLE – Thanks to the residents of Darke RYAN County, The BERRY Early Bird/ Managing Editor bluebagmedia.com Bluebag Media has had another successful audit. The audit is important to independently verify distribution circulation figures are accurate; ultimately allowing advertisers to know without a doubt their advertisements are going to the homes the newspaper claims. To be considered a Newspaper of General Circulation a publication must provide an independent audit or a Statement of Ownership, Management or Circulation. With the latter, advertisers are expected to take the word of the publisher or owner that the figures are correct. The audit shows The

Early Bird is delivered weekly by carriers to 27,701 homes in Darke County and surrounding communities. With mail delivery, sale of issues at the office, and hotel copies, nearly 28,000 households receive the newspaper on a weekly basis. The independent auditing firm, Circulation Verification Council (CVC), also points out the average number of readers for each copy is 1.825. Which means over 50,000 people read The Early Bird each week. For comparison, the local daily newspaper through its Statement of Ownership, Management or Circulation claims an average (the preceding 12month period) of 2,264 home deliveries per issue, Monday through Friday. Using the 1.825 readers per issue figure earned by The Early Bird, the daily paper’s Monday

through Friday readership is less than half. The Early Bird/Bluebag Media takes its audit a step further and authorizes CVC to do a survey of persons that receive the newspaper. Your local, hometown, weekly newspaper is thrilled with the support it receives from the community. Over 80 percent say they read or look through The Early Bird on a regular basis, which is far above the national average of 73 percent (National Newspaper Association survey). Even more impressive is that over 82 percent of readers say they have purchased products or services from ads seen in The Early Bird; the national average is 63 percent. The Early Bird/Bluebag Media pledges to keep working hard to be Darke County’s newspaper of choice.

Republican senators by Justice Sharon Kennedy, Supreme Court of Ohio. It was administered to the 10 Democrat senators by Judge Terri Jamison, Franklin Co. Court of Common Pleas, Domestic Relations-Juvenile Court. Following the Oath of Office, Faber relinquished the gavel and sat in his Senate seat with his two children. Senator Jim Hughes (Dist. 16, R) nominated him for President, noting he was honest and trustworthy, a man of integrity… a family man. “Along with his responsibilities as our Senate President, he still has time to coach his son’s baseball team. He will work… not for what’s best for us, but for the state. He comes to us with great experience and leads by example.” The vote was taken, re-electing Faber unanimously, 32-0. Following his election, Faber accepted the gavel once again and presided over the election of three ad-

ditional Republican leaders: President Pro Tempore, Majority Floor Leader and Majority Whip; and four Democrat leaders: Minority Leader, Assistant Minority Leader, Minority Whip and Assistant Minority Whip. All leaders were elected unanimously, 32-0. Before adjourning President Faber reminded members to come into the new session with a renewed spirit of bi-partisanship. “We share the singular role of making Ohio the best place to live and raise families,” he said. He also reminded them of who was important… “The people who sent us here can also call us home. No one is more important than those who sent us here.” The Pledge of Allegiance at the ceremonial opening was led by the 25 children and grandchildren of Senate members. The opening National Anthem and closing God Bless America was sung by the St. Francis DeSales High School Select Ensemble.

DUI

On January 1 police observed a man urinating in the alley behind Danny’s Place, 308 S. Broadway. The defendant, Christopher Kermeen, had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on him and was stumbling as he walked. He slurred his words and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was warned for littering and disorderly conduct. A short time later Kermeen was observed operating a motor vehicle in the 400 block of South Broadway. The officer stopped him and once again detected the odor of alcoholic beverage. Kermeen did poorly on a field sobriety test and was arrested for OVI. A breath test registered .16. He was placed under Administrative License Suspension and released to his daughter. On December 30 police observed Jeffrey Shofner operating a black Mazda with registration confirmed to have expired on Dec. 17. The officer detected

a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Shofner spoke slowly and his words were slurred; his eyes appeared to be bloodshot and pupils dilated. Shofner admitted to smoking marijuana earlier with a friend and having a marijuana pipe (but no drugs) in his vehicle. Shofner did poorly on a field sobriety test and was arrested for OVI. He was transported to the Greenville police station. The defendant agreed to provide a urine sample. It will be sent out for analysis, along with the marijuana pipe. Shofner was cited for OVI and expired registration and released to his friend.

Fire and Life Safety message’s for the New Year; With children spending more time in the home during the winter months, do some of the following things to keep all a little safer; 1) Make sure all electrical cords are in good condition. Look for exposed wires, cracked insulation, and the placement of the cords. Insure they are not under a rug, a trip hazard, or over loaded. 2) If you use kerosene heaters, keep a 3 foot clearance around the heater. Make sure it has a working “Tip Switch”. Explain to your children the dangers of the heaters. Be sure the CO2 monitor in the home is working. Refill the heater outside and wait till it has cooled down. 3) Get down on the floor, at your child’s eye level, in the bedroom and play area.

Look around for hazards such as low hanging window blind cords, possible toys or items that a smaller child could choke on. Make sure there is plenty of room between the bed and furniture, so a child can’t become caught between causing breathing problems. 4) When in the kitchen, make sure the children stay clear of the stove or hot items on the counter. Best practices is to just keep them out of kitchen all together. Grown ups doing the cooking be sure you keep pot holders, oven mitts, long sleeves/loose clothing, or anything that could catch fire away from the stovetop. Be sure the fire extinguisher is charged in the kitchen. 5) Practice your family escape plan and check to be sure your smoke detectors are working.

Court of Common Pleas to one count of Aggravated Burglary, a felony of the first degree, and one count of Robbery, a second degree felony. A charge of Kidnapping and Grand Theft Auto were dismissed as part of a plea agreement with the state. James Bush, 32, of Versailles was sentenced to a term of four years with the Ohio Department of Correction and Rehabilitation which was mutually recommended by both the defense and the prosecution prior to signing the plea bargain. He was represented by local attorney Paul Wagner. Codefendant Jeremiah Burkhart received the same sentence in December for his involvement in the Oct. 6 crime. After admitting to a night of drinking, the trio broke into a home at 232 Tiffin Street in Greenville and assaulted a 57-year-old male homeowner before making away with $15,000 worth of coins. Daniel Bush, 33, of Greenville was what Darke County Prosecuting Attorney Kelly Ormsby called the main aggressor of the three. He was given a seven year sentence by Judge Jonathan P. Hein which was what Ormsby and the defense agreed upon as a mutual recommendation. Daniel Bush, who was on probation at the time of the offense, entered an admission to violations filed by Assistant Prosecutor Jesse Green in Tuesday’s hearing. Judge Hein did not add additional time to Bush’s sentence, but did order a concurrent 18 month sentence along with court costs for the probation violations. “Mr. Bush’s prior record and conduct during the offense is why the state is asking for more time than his codefendants in the case,” stated Ormsby. “He is the one that actually assaulted the victim while James Bush was the reported look-out and Mr. Burkhart located the coins to steal.” “I’ve lived a long life of messing up and regret it all,” Daniel Bush told the judge during sentencing. “I have hurt my kids and my family and am going to use this time to try and better myself.” Both Bush brothers will be placed on mandatory five years of post release control after completing their prison sentences. As part of the plea agreement, neither are able to appeal their conviction.

Car collides with Tri-Village school bus, injuries reported DARKE COUNTY – A Tri-Village school bus was involved in a crash Wednesday morning making its way to drop off students after a 2-hour delay to the start of the school day. According to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, the school bus, driven by Mary Boone, 58, of New Madison, was traveling southbound on State Route 121, just north of New Paris, and had stopped to pick up a student, then backed the school bus partially into a private lane and while pulling out of the lane to travel north on State Route 121. A silver Ford Fiesta, driven by Laura Hall, 38, of New Madison, was traveling northbound on

SR 121 and was unable to stop in time on the slick roadway. The car smashed into the rear of the bus causing the vehicle to slide off the road and coming to rest at the bottom of an embankment. The school bus was occupied with 45 students, and one 15 year old female student was transported to Reid Hospital for possible injuries and all other students were uninjured. Hall was transported to Wayne HealthCare for her injuries. The bus driver was uninjured. Darke County Deputies along with Hollansburg Fire, Tri-Village Rescue, and Northwest EMS responded to the incident.

Willis entered a guilty plea to four counts of Arson in November. The pair was arrested and charged stemming from an overnight crime spree in-

Lowell “Bill” Bowers volving setting fires in at least eight vehicles in Greenville. Following a pre-sentence investigation Judge Jonathan P. Hein will sentence Bowers March 2 at 1 p.m. He faces a maximum of six years, 18 months on each count, and up to $20,000 in fines and restitution for victim damages in the case. GREENVILLE – City of Greenville residents will have a couple more weeks to try and persuade council members to keep trash bags as an option for waste collection. Council heard the second reading of a resolution authorizing the safety/service director to advertise for bids for the 2015 Refuse Contract, but a motion to give the resolution its third and final reading before a vote failed. Several residents spoke at the Jan. 6 meeting of Greenville City Council asking members to reinstate the imprinted trash bags as an alternative in the Refuse Specification that will be going out for bids as soon as council approves the resolution. Council’s utility committee pulled that option when developing the specifications, but offered 35, 65 and 95 gallon waste hoppers in its place. Residents argued they didn’t want to pay for a service they didn’t need. Many said they may only use three or four trash bags a month and wouldn’t come close to filling a 35 gallon waste hopper. Plus, if the waste haulers were tipped over or knocked down the street some senior citizens would have a difficult time picking them up. Councilman Tracy Tryon agreed with the residents and made a motion to amend the Refuse Specifications to include the current trash bag system. The motion was not met with overwhelming support. Councilman John

Museum hosts Last Monday program VERSAILLES – The Versailles Museum announces the return of its successful “Last Monday of the Month.” program beginning Jan. 26, 1 p.m. They will host their first gathering of 2015 with the theme Webster Memories. A brief history of this area and its early settlers will follow with a discussion of village life throughout the area. They have great discussions because you bring the stories and old pictures to them and they all learn more about the people and places that make up northeastern Darke County. The afternoon will conclude with a warm beverages and a sweet treat before you go back out into the January cold. You may also get a sneak peak at the many changes of the museum displays in preparation for their February reopening. If the county is on a Level 2 snow emergency or Versailles schools are closed they will not meet.

Baumgardner suggested he wouldn’t support the trash bag system or the proposed Refuse Specifications because it didn’t go far enough. He said the cost to all residents would be reduced if council would make it mandatory for all residents to subscribe to the service and include the payment on the water bill. He believes the current trash bag system is being subsidized by residents with waste hoppers. The cost to Rumpke is basically the same whether or not a resident has trash at the curb. He pointed out the cost of 5,000 residents paying for the service as opposed to 4,000 would ultimately mean cheaper rates for everyone. Tryon’s motion failed with a 4-3 vote. Voting in favor were Tryon, Leon Rogers and Clarence Godwin; against were Baumgardner, John Schmidt, Roy Harrison and Todd Oliver. Council will hear the final reading of the resolution at its Jan. 20 meeting. Members will then

have an opportunity to vote for or against the resolution, which would authorize the safety/service director to advertise for bids for the 2015 Refuse Contract. The cur-

Here are a few of these moves: Consider adding stocks. With stock prices having climbed higher and higher for more than five years, you might be wondering if it’s time to scale back on your ownership of equities. After all, no “bull” market lasts forever. Still, some factors point to continued strength for stocks over the long term. First, we are seeing signs of improving economic growth; employment gains and low oil prices are giving consumers more confidence, leading to a boost in spending. Second, corporate earnings — a key driver of stock prices — were quite strong in the second half of 2014, and companies appear poised to show more good results in 2015. Third, stocks — at least large-company stocks — are still reasonably valued, as measured by their price-to-earnings ratios (P/E). Given these factors, you might want to think about adding quality stocks to your holdings — assuming, of course, these stocks can help meet your needs for a balanced portfolio. And be aware that even the most favorable conditions can’t assure a continued run-up in stock prices, which can and will fluctuate. Prepare for rising interest rates. For several years, interest rates have been at, or near, historical lows.

Given the strengthening economy, and the decreased need for stimulus, the Federal Reserve may well raise short-term interest rates in 2015, perhaps as early as this summer. But long-term rates may start rising even before then, so you may want to take a close look at your bonds and other fixed-rate investments. As you probably know, when interest rates rise, the value of existing bonds typically falls because investors won’t pay full price for your bonds when they can get newly issued ones that pay higher rates. One way to combat the effects of rising rates is to build a “ladder” consisting of short-, intermediateand long-term bonds. With such a ladder, you’ll be able to redeem your maturing short-term bonds and reinvest them in the new, higher-paying bonds. Look for investment opportunities abroad. Although economic growth has been slow in parts of the world, especially China, many countries have now initiated policies to spur economic growth. These actions can create opportunities for international equity investments. Keep in mind, though, that international investing involves particular risks, such as currency fluctuations and political and economic instability. So if you are considering foreign investments, you may want to consult with a financial professional. There are no guarantees, but by following the above suggestions, you may be able to take advantage of what looks to be a fairly favorable investment environment for 2015. While you should make most of your investment decisions based on long-term considerations, it’s always a good idea to be attuned to what’s happening in the world around you — and to respond appropriately.

READERS WRITE Mitten Tree Thank You

Dear friends, Thanks to the generous spirit of the people of our community, the Fish Mitten Tree has once again provided mittens and gloves to warm the hands and hearts of children enrolled in Darke County Head Start programs. This hearty demonstration of the true spirit of Christmas which lingers long beyond December 25th is very much appreciated. Special gratitude is extended to Aaron and Michele Cox and their staff at Montage Cafe in Greenville and Judy Fourman and her crew at Arcanum’s Ben Franklin Store who watched over the trees in their places of business, as well as to Holly Hill, Janet Ashworth, and others at the Brethren’s Retirement Community who looked after the Mitten Tree at that facility. Also, thanks to the Darke County Commissioners who took time from their busy schedule to kick off the project, meeting and visiting with youngsters from Head Start while hanging the first mittens on the tree at Montage.

Many local churches, clubs, and organizations donated mittens, gloves, and more to the Mitten Tree; sincere thanks goes to these groups and the individuals who coordinated their involvement with special recognition to Oakland Church of the Brethren, whose commitment to the project was essential to its ultimate success. Additionally, due to a significant monetary contribution this year, each Head Start student received a book of their own for Christmas; One Mitten by Kristine O’Connell George and Jan Brett’s The Hat were given to the pre-schoolers, with a board book offering activities for toddlers given to those in the day care program. This successful project could not have been possible without the publicity provided by our local news outlets The Early Bird, The Daily Advocate, DarkeJournal.com, and County News Online; their assistance is greatly appreciated. State helps prevent falls this winter D i d you know that falls are the number one cause of injuryJIM BUCHY related OHIO hospitalREPRESENTATIVE ization and death among people 65 and older? Many of us did not worry about the risk of falling when we were young. We knew that if we fell, we’d get up with the assumption that the aches and pains were temporary. But for those of us at a higher risk, such as elders, pregnant women, or those already suffering from a previous injury, a fall can be a life-altering event. The simplest step one can take is to know which risk factors to look for. The Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that fall risks include advanced age, history of previous falls, muscle weakness, gait and balance problems, poor vision, chronic medical conditions like arthritis, and fear of falling. Others include obstacles and tripping hazards, slippery or uneven surfaces, lack of stair handrails, dim lighting or glare, lack of bathroom grab bars, use of certain medications, and improper use of assistive devices like walkers or canes. Specific steps managers of public buildings can consider include putting signs up to warn customers about areas in their store that are more susceptible to falls and to make sure that there are no obstructions in the aisles that people could trip on. Outside the building, managers

should consider making sure that the entrance is free of ice and snow so that people don’t slip on the way in. Business owners should consider advising employees to always make sure that they offer help to customers, especially to the elderly or disabled customers. However, the responsibility of prevention does not only lie with business owners or caregivers, but the individual at risk as well. You can work to prevent falls by following some simple, commonsense steps. Some of these steps include getting hearing and vision checks each year, removing fall hazards around your living space, and letting someone know if you do fall. Even if you’re not hurt, it’s important to tell someone, especially an employee if you’re in a store, so they can correct the problem. To learn more about preventing falls you can visit www.steadyu.ohio.gov. Steady U is part of an effort by Governor Kasich and the Ohio Department of Aging to increase awareness about the hazards of falling. The website is a valuable resource for all of my fellow elders and their caregivers concerned about the risks of falling. We all have the power to reduce the risk of falling. It may require some added diligence in our day-to-day routine, but this extra effort is worthwhile when weighed against the cost of an unfortunate fall. Please give me your opinion on this topic and others in the news this month by completing an online survey at tinyurl. com/buchyjanuary2015.

Monday was a long day. On the road at 6:30… returning home about 6:30, 12 hours later. I was one of dozens of men, women and children watching our senators conduct official business in the Ohio Senate Opening Ceremony of the 131st General Assembly. Highlight: Our two local public servants, Sen. Bill Beagle and Sen. Keith Faber, were sworn in to begin their new terms. Highlight: Sen. Faber was sworn in to begin his new term as the Ohio Senate President. Highlight: A dozen high school students – the St. Francis DeSales Select Ensemble – sang the National Anthem to start the session and God Bless America to close the session. Highlight: Twenty-five children (of the senators), ranging from toddler to early teens, led the Pledge of

their priorities. It was unanimous: Jobs. The prerequisites? Workforce development and education, both secondary and post-secondary, were at the top of the list. Without exception they understood these were a major part of making Ohio a great place to live and raise a family. And it was fascinating watching the kids. While he was waiting to be re-elected as president, Keith Faber sat in his “senate” seat with his two children, Adam and Brooke, on his lap. When he resumed his position at the head of the Senate, Adam resumed his seat at his dad’s desk. More than a dozen other children sat quietly throughout the 2-hour event, some sitting with their mom or dad’s laps in the area reserved for senators. I spent a few minutes talking to Rep. Jim Buchy while his granddaughter, Caroline Kerg, sat at her grandfather’s desk in the House. I had an occasional chance to snap a shot of youngsters (and a few toddlers), all dressed in formal wear, with tie and sweater for boys,

frilly dresses for girls. But most of all I focused on the young people in conservative business attire taking care of the needs of the visitors and their bosses. There were men and women… none of them much older than my oldest grandsons, most much younger. A few I would have guessed were still in high school if I didn’t know better. They were conscientious, solicitous, hardworking and constantly ready to do whatever was requested of them. I was impressed!! This was a long day for someone on the Grumpy Side of 60, but I’m glad I made the trip. I got some great information I’ll be sharing with you, but more than that I got a sense of urgency. Positive urgency. A sense of important work to be done. A sense that our kids, our future, transcends party lines. Sen. Faber, Mr. President, made one statement that to me summed up the entire day. He said, “I am here for two reasons… Adam and Brooke.” I concur, Mr. President.

Allegiance as part of the session opening. All told… took about 15-20 minutes out of the 2-plus-hour session. The remainder of the time? Let me put it this way… I could never be an elected official, especially at the state or federal level. I was delighted with the nomination speech for Pres. Faber. Sen. Jim Hughes (Columbus) did a good job, not only focusing on the job Faber had done the previous two years, but also his devotion as a family man. Then I realized the same thing was coming for seven more positions of leadership… people I didn’t know being nominated by people I didn’t know. As both parties unanimously voted “yes” for every nomination, I also was reminded this was a ceremonial obligation of the Ohio Constitution. These positions of leadership had most likely been settled before everyone went home for the holidays. I settled in for a long afternoon. Outside of the ceremonial opening session I had opportunities to talk to a few people about

VCC helps drill two wells in India VERSAILLES – During the 2014 Christmas season the Versailles Christian Church wanted to give a special gift to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ! VCC partnered with the global mission ‘Gospel for Asia’ to drill two wells in India in order to provide fresh water for two entire villages, improving health and hygiene and even saving lives. The cost for the drilling and maintenance of two wells is $2,800. VCC claimed the promise of God in the New Testament book of Mark 9:41 “I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in My name because you be-

long to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.” During the worship services at VCC on Jan. 4, it was announced and celebrated that a grand total of $3,386.67 was given by VCC for this very special birthday gift for Jesus! VCC is now able to provide not only for the drilling and maintenance of two wells, but also the purchasing of two new bicycles (the primary mode of transportation) for missionaries in India and providing 122 Bibles in their native language. VCC is praying this ‘birthday gift’ will bring honor to Jesus Christ for many, many years.

Darke Co. January Blood Drives set

DARKE COUNTY –The following Darke County blood drives comes during January National Blood Donor Month and CBC is celebrating with a special gift to help donors keep warm this winter. Everyone who registers to donate from Jan. 5-31 will receive a “Blood Drop Beanie” knit hat. Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment online at www. DonorTime.com. January National Blood Donor Month is an added opportunity for CBC to honor the donors, volunteers and staff members who have contributed to its “50 Years of Saving Lives” legacy. Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather and illness. January can be an especially difficult month for blood centers to collect blood donations. CBC begins the New Year with an ample reserve and careful blood collection planning in place to reliably provide the blood and blood

products needed to our 25 partner hospitals in CBC’s 15-county service area. Winter months can be just as dangerous as summer months when you are not properly equipped with the correct clothing. Hypothermia is a well-known illness in the winter months that can happen very fast when expose to cold weather or in a cold body of water. Hypothermia occurs when your body loses heat faster than it can produce heat causing a dangerous low body temperature. Your normal body temperature is 98.6 F, hypothermia occurs when your body temperature passes below 95 F. When the body temperature drops, your heart and nervous sys-

tem does not work correctly. A couple of symptoms of hypothermia are shivering, dizziness, nausea, and fast breathing. When you come in contact with a person that has hypothermia, call for medical attention, take off any cold or wet clothes, and cover the person with layers of blankets until emergency help arrives. For more information on winter visit them on Facebook or check out their website, www.florylandscaping.com.

Adalynn Grace is Wayne Hospital’s New Year’s baby GREENVILLE – “When she went into labor, I BOB jumped up! ROBINSON I knew it,â€? Associate Editor bluebagmedia.com said proud grandmother Lisa Brickler. “We’re having a New Year’s baby!!â€? Adalynn Grace Davis was born at Wayne Health Care Center Jan. 1 at 1:57 a.m. Weighing in at 8 lbs. 15 oz., 20.25 inches long, Adalynn was the hospital’s ďŹ rst baby of 2015. Mom, Brianna Brickler, 23, is a Greenville High School graduate. She has another daughter, Brooklynn Davis, three. Adalynn’s father is Edward Davis of Greenville. Her grandparents are Lisa Brickler, Jeff Brickler, Karen Tedore and Chuck Davis. Her great grandparents are Paul and Coleen Garrett and John and Kathy Brickner. All are Green-

ville residents. Brianna said she got up to charge her phone on New Year’s Eve‌ then knew it was time. She was in labor two and a half to three hours, and was delivered by Dr. Patrick Karr. “It wasn’t an easy delivery,â€? grandmother said, “but it was fast, and it was smooth.â€? The due date was Dec. 30, but the grandmother knew better. “Our whole family all had a feeling she’d (Brianna) have a New Year’s baby.â€? Brianna and Adalynn were presented a gift basket from Nurse Susan Curtis on behalf the Wayne Healthcare Nurses Auxiliary. Terri Flood, Wayne Health Care Marketing Director, said 341 babies were delivered at the hospital in 2014. She anticipated it would be about the same this year. “Lots of places are cutting down‌ no lon-

to other places. Flood said they wanted people to know what services the hospital has, adding “we’re fortunate to have a great (delivery service) program here.

FFA experience led to decision to teach GREENVILLE – “A lot of it is patience,â€? said David BOB Heffelfinger. ROBINSON “Theirs‌ Associate Editor bluebagmedia.com yours‌ you never know. You have a plan. It looks really good on paper, then‌ (pause) Well, it doesn’t always work out that way.â€? HeffelďŹ nger is one of the new teachers at Woodland Heights Primary School for 2014-15. His position – kindergarten teacher – is unique in that he is the only full time male teacher on the staff. According to Krista Quellhorst, secretary, he is the ďŹ rst male kindergarten teacher for as long as she can remember. “This is fantastic,â€? HeffelďŹ nger said referring to his position at Woodland. “I was greeted with open arms. I have a support team‌ anything I need they help me with.â€? A recent Urbana University graduate in Early Childhood Education, HeffelďŹ nger said he had no intention of teaching when he was in high

school at Miami East. “I was in FFA,â€? he noted. “We raised sheep; I took one to Ag Day for a sheep shearing demonstration. At the end I gave each kid a little piece of wool‌ “It was a thrill,â€? he said. “Handing them the wool, seeing their eyes light up.â€? His teacher asked him if he’d thought about becoming a teacher. He hadn’t‌ “So I thought about it. The next year I enrolled at Urbana.â€? This is his ďŹ rst full time teaching position. Upon graduation he served as a Title 1 Reading teacher and a tutor at Miami East. He also taught preschool for half a year. Did he believe his gender was a factor in being hired? He shook his head. “I don’t think so. I think it was my passion. In my interview I was really passionate‌ it really is all about the kids. I think I stood out because of my passion to be a teacher.â€? HeffelďŹ nger acknowledged there were challenges and rewards in teaching the very young.

ODE relaxes CCP participation requirements David Heffelfinger watches his kindergarten students prepare for the day’s activities the Friday before Christmas break. (Bob Robinson photo)

One of the challenges, he thought, was their inconsistency. “You work on something‌ you make that one big hit! They get it!! Then you come in the next day and they don’t remember a thing‌ are you kidding me?â€? Repetition, he said. Consistency. Little ones learn with repetition. On the other hand, he said it can be shocking how fast they pick up on some things, like sight words. “Popcorn words. Words that pop up everywhere. They learn it one week‌ the next week they remember it.â€? The beginning of the

year was tough. “I don’t know who was hurting more,â€? he said. “Mom walks away crying; the child leaves mom crying.â€? Before long the routine was established‌ “Now they know they’re here to learn. They come in with a smile on their faces.â€? HeffelďŹ nger acknowledged there were many components needed to be a teacher, adding he was glad he chose the ďŹ eld. He’s also glad to be at Woodland. “Greenville is a great community,â€? he said. “I’ve met some great people‌ coworkers, staff have all been wonderful.â€?

Vivitrol to be introduced to treat addiction GREENVILLE – “The holidays are a depressing BOB time of the ROBINSON year if you’re Associate Editor bluebagmedia.com battling addiction,â€? Darke County Chief Probation OfďŹ cer James Mollette said. “It’s a balancing act between providing for the family and the drugs; it’s much easier to go back to the addiction.â€? He added it’s also difďŹ cult ďŹ ghting loneliness. “We do all the encouraging things we can‌ meetings‌ any positives we can. A low percentage of addicts are actually comfortable with what they’re doing.â€? He noted, however, they realize they’re doing it for a reason, one of which is to stay out of jail. “There are unique challenges due to her-

oin,â€? he said. “Heroin is an epidemic and it’s only getting worse.â€? A new treatment Mollette is optimistic about is Vivitrol. In combination with traditional treatment, such as counseling, he believes it will be more effective than the methadone and suboxone treatments of the past. It is designed to reduce cravings. “Methadone and suboxone could be abused. Vivitrol is a once-monthly injection; they have to go to a physician for it. We’re hoping it will eliminate some substance abuse.â€? Mollette said his department will be getting one new probation ofďŹ cer, hopefully two. Probation experienced about a 15 percent increase of offenders in 2014 over 2013. Its current offender list is 450; they are on probation or

new, involving pretrial work. Of those, over 100, or roughly 25 percent, are on “Intensive Probation. He added they also had a high percentage of ILC (Intervention in Liu of Conviction) offenders. “This is a diversionary program; they have to have a treatment plan with Drug & Alcohol Prevention or the Mental Health facility. In 2014 the court sent 28 to prison and 30 to the MonDay program. This was straight out of the courtroom. MonDay was about double what they sent in 2013. How did MonDay do when offenders returned to the county? Mollette said he was a strong supporter of the program, but his answer still had to be generic. “MonDay offenders are higher risk. Even with the program, they still have issues,

he said. “There is a higher failure rate, but it isn’t because of the program.â€? He added they don’t send lower risk offenders there because it would likely make them worse off. Mollette checked one MonDay graduate released in June 2014. “No discipline or court appearances afterwards,â€? he said. “So we can consider that successful.â€? In addition to starting Vivitrol treatment, Mollette hoped there will be an improvement in employment of convicted felons in the community. “These were discussed in the meetings conducted by the Darke County Chamber of Commerce,â€? he said. “There has been movement on this‌ I just had a job placement interview with an offender.â€?

COLUMBUS – “If you can do it, you’re in!â€? said Ohio BOB Rep. Jim ROBINSON Buchy (84th Associate Editor bluebagmedia.com Dist., R) of Greenville. “If you can’t you’re not.â€? Buchy was not happy over the guidelines for the state’s College Credit Plus program, set to be implemented for the fall semester. It limits enrollment in CCP courses to students who are enrolled in both high school and an accredited college. He said a student should be able to take the class even if he or she isn’t currently enrolled in a college, or planning on a college track. “If the student has the ability to participate, it should be allowed,â€? Buchy continued. According to Elizabeth Conway, Ohio Senate Deputy Chief of Staff, there have been a number of concerns raised with the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and the Ohio Board of Regents regarding the requirement. Locally, it was a sticky point with Jim Atchley, Superintendent of Ansonia and Mississinawa Valley school districts. From his perspective it’s about numbers. Limiting participation only to students enrolled in high school and college isn’t realistic for small districts. Justin Barnhart from Buchy’s ofďŹ ce said the representative communicated with ODE about the requirement; State Senator Bill Beagle, who strongly supports the program, said he would be following up as well. The Board of Regents was listening. It released a revision to its requirement on Jan. 5. Pending approval Jan. 27 by the General Assembly’s Joint

Committee on Agency Rule Review, high school students not enrolled in college will still be allowed to take the course and receive high school credit for it. The rule stipulates all students must follow “the same course syllabus, use the same textbook and materials, aspire to achieve the same learning outcomes and are assessed using the same methods as the college course delivered on the college campus.â€? Both student and parents will be notiďŹ ed the student will only receive high school credit and “would likely be required to retake the courseâ€? if they decide to enroll in college. All other requirements (see “CCP seen as a positive for college-bound students,â€? The Early Bird and Bluebag Media, Jan. 4) will remain the same. Soon to be elected Pro Tempore of the 131st Ohio Legislature Ron Amstutz (1st Dist., R) of Wooster, said the goal of this year’s General Assembly is to help improve the job climate, noting areas like education (Secondary, CCP, Post-Secondary) and workforce development has to happen at the community level. “We can provide some policy to make it better,â€? he said, “but it’s still a challenge at the state level.â€? He noted the two most commonly perceived things holding people back are the lack of skills and drugs. “You don’t just pass a few laws and ďŹ x the problem,â€? he said. “We need to focus on business and families.â€? He added, however, “sometimes our helper programs can provide barriers‌ unemployment, public assistance too long‌ those are the challenges.â€?

Friends celebrate 2014 successes GREENVILLE – The Summer Family Reading Program with its variety of activities, guests and opportunities for children and families at the Greenville Public Library and the four Authors Nights at Montage in early 2014, were reasons for the Friends of the Greenville Public Library to celebrate its community support in helping the Library promote literacy. The many services and opportunities provided by

the Library are an asset to our Darke County community and FOL seeks to help by funding programs that increase Library outreach. In 2014, the last annual used book sale was held at PAWS in May, with members opting instead to continue the on-going used book sale on the second floor of the Library, west of the computer area. A wide variety of books, CDs and DVDs are available for donations only. The fund-

ing from these donations as well as member and corporate support enable the Friends of the Library to continue funding for Library needs beyond its budget. Volunteers Craig and Vickie Stickel and Dede Wissman stock the second floor used book shelves with current works as well as old favorites, some from Library discards and some from citizens’ donations. These donations

Certification needed to apply fertilizer GREENVILLE – Agricultural fertilizer applicator certification is now required for farmers who apply fertilizer to more than 50 acres of agricultural production grown primarily for sale. This requirement was signed into law in June 2014 and also requires certification for commercial agricultural applicators. Farmers who have their fertilizer applied by co-ops or custom applicators are not required to be certified. Farmers and applicators need to attend a train-

ing course offered by Ohio State University Extension to become certified. Those who have a pesticide applicator license need to attend a two-hour fertilizer certification. If an applicator does not have a pesticide license they will be required to attend a three-hour fertilizer certification. A two-hour certification program for any applicator that has a pesticide license will be offered on Feb. 16, 1 p.m. This meeting is in conjunction with the pesticide recertifica-

tion will meet the certification requirements only for those with a pesticide license. Pre-registration is required and you can register for the fertilizer certification program only by calling Sam Custer at 548-5215. Register for the combined pesticide and fertilizer training at pested.osu.edu. A three-hour certification program for any applicator that does not have a pesticide license will be offered on March 25, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Romers, Greenville. This free meeting which will also include a sponsored lunch and a keynote address by Dr. John Fulton on Big Data and Precision Agriculture will meet the certification requirements for those with and without a pesticide license. Preregistration is required and online registration is available at nutrienteducation.osu.edu. Fertilizer is defined for the regulation as any substance containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, or other plant nutrient in a dry or liquid formulation. All application types such as broadcast, side dress, sub-surface, knifing and other are included in the certification requirement. Lime and limestone are not included as fertilizer for the certification and farmers who only use starter fertilizer in their planter boxes are exempted. Applicators who are a Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) or Ohio Certified Livestock Manager are not required to attend the training. The agriculture fertilizer certification is not required for manure applications as these are currently regulated. Applicators who meet the criteria for the certification must attend training by Sept. 30, 2017. The Ohio Department of Agriculture is the agency issuing the certification for agriculture fertilizer applications. Their website has information regarding the regulation at agri.ohio.gov. For more information about other training session or general materials for the agriculture fertilizer certification, visit nutrienteducation. osu.edu or contact Sam Custer at OSU Extension, Darke County at 548-5215 or custer.2@osu.edu.

are helping the Friends of the Greenville Library continue its support of the Library and its community outreach programs. On Dec. 6, an outpouring of cookies and candies contributed by FOL members were special treats for all those who visited the Annual Library Open House. The biggest draw for the Open House, was a chance to talk with and have free photos taken with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause. Flute music by Nancy Jackson and violist Alex Vehre added to the festive atmosphere. Beautiful free holiday bookmarks made by FOL member Marilyn Robbins were an added plus for the event. Many volunteers made this event possible for patrons and guests to view the community gem that is our Greenville Public Library. The first of the 2015 Authors Nights at Montage will feature author John Scalzi, a nationally known sci fi writer, at 7 p.m. on Jan. 23. Family almost had two born first RICHMOND, Ind. – Seven years ago, Brittany Lynch just missed having the first Reid baby of 2008 with the birth of her oldest son, born on New Year’s Day but arriving as the second child that year. Though a day past the holiday, her third son – born at 8:24 a.m. Jan. 2 – became the first baby born at Reid for 2015. Lynch said she wasn’t out either time to have the first newborn, though she was happy to celebrate the honor with the new arrival, Liam Aaron Michael Lynch. “His due date was Jan. 2,” she said, so she wasn’t expecting to be first this time. Her oldest, Michael-Allen Lynch, just celebrated his birthday on the first. Lynch said he was quite happy that his new brother was going to have a different birthday. Liam weighed six pounds, 11 ounces, and was 18.5 inches long. He was born just a few hours after Mom’s arrival early Friday morning. Besides MichaelAllen, Liam will also be welcomed to their home in Richmond by a two-

year-old brother, Adrian McGrady Jr., though Lynch said she wasn’t sure just how much the toddler understood yet about getting another

brother. With two older brothers, she said, smiling: Liam “is going to have to learn to be tough really quickly.”
