GREENVILLE — With Super Bowl Sunday fast approaching this weekend, it is estimated that Americans will consume their “fan favorite” snacks with gusto: 1.25 billion chicken wings, 28 million pounds of chips, and 8 million pounds of guacamole will be consumed during this three-plus-hour football extravaganza of sport, entertainment, and commercials. More than half of the 12.5 million pizzas eaten during Sunday’s game will be ordered before kick-off, with 36 percent being pepperoni with cheese. When the trophy is passed down and the work week starts afresh, Americans of all ages will have one more glorious opportunity to celebrate their favorite fan food on National Pizza Day, which happens Feb. 9. The word “pizza” is believed to be derived from an old Italian word pizzicare, which means to pinch or pluck. Pizza’s true origin story begins in Naples, first founded around 600 B.C, both as Greek settlement, and later as a Roman port city. Early pizzas were often flat breads with a variety of garnishes (tomatoes, basil, olive oil, garlic, cheese and anchoProvided photo vies), and often sold by street vendors and in Aaron Keaser, owner of Teaford’s Pizza & Subs, stands ready in his kitchen, located small, casual taverns, with Naples’ original at 101 Pine Street, in Greenville. Darke County is blessed to have many outstanding “signature” eateries, like Teaford’s Pizza & Subs, throughout its four corners, pizzeria, the Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba, first celebrating its own unique blend of traditions and cultures. Owners should report destroyed property to auditor’s office Staff report
GREENVILLE — Darke County Auditor Carol Ginn is pleased to announce that real estate property owners may claim a reduction in the taxable value of their real estate property for
buildings that have been destroyed, torn down, or damaged — regardless of the time of year the destruction or damage occurred. Enacted legislation by the State of Ohio enables
real estate property owners to claim the reduction at any time, regardless of the cause of the damage (fire, wind, etc., or torn down). The amount of reduction would be prorated on the basis of the calendar quar-
ter in which the damages occurred. Property owners must file the Form-DTE 26 with the county auditor’s office to get the reduction. Real estate property destroyed or damaged during the
first three quarters (Jan. to Sept.) must be filed by Dec. 31 of the year that the damage occurred. Real estate property destroyed or damaged in the last quarter (Oct. to Dec.) must be filed by Jan. 31 of the
following year. For additional information, please contact the Darke County Auditor’s Office, located at the courthouse, Monday through See REPORT | 2A

The New Year has started off just about the same as the last one ended. For wintertime in the Miami Valley, we have had decent weather so far. The Coronavirus is still with us, but it seems to be waning as vaccines become more available, and businesses here seem to be moving along fairly well. We are all holding out for a much better year this time around! January has started out as usual with the office here signing purchase orders, setting up some new procedures, and adjusting to each other as we have a new Commissioner in the office, Larry Holmes. Larry has a background in business and finance and is a graduate of Greenville High School. He is learning the position and is fitting in nicely so far. Matt and I are whipping him into shape, and it shouldn’t take much longer! We also had our reorganization meeting on Jan. 11 during our regular session, and Matt Aultman will be Chairman, and Mike Stegall will be Vice Chairman for 2021 (Larry is referred to as “member” this year and will have to bring us coffee and donuts, and empty the trash!). We have hired a new person in the office for the front desk and as Assistant Clerk/Secretary, Bridget Steinmetz. Bridget will start in mid-February and we look forward to working with her. Congratulations Bridget and welcome aboard! Charity Hutt, who was at the front desk and has been moved to the position of Administrative Assistant in the Sewer Dept. and Automotive Maintenance office. These new assign-

Bradford downs Lady Trailblazers
Lady Wave JV beats Stebbins 37-26 By Gaylen Blosser

GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave JV team numbers 17 players. Included on the JV squad is the girls freshman team that seldom gets to compete due to many schools not fielding a freshman team for the 2020-2021 season. With the Tuesday night game the last Lady Wave JV game of the season, Greenville JV coach, Laura Germann had confidence in her JV team to give the freshman girls the first quarter of play. The Stebbins Lady Indians invaded the Greenville gym for Tuesday night JV and varsity games with the Lady Wave junior varsity squad taking the early game by a double digit 37-26 victory. “Once we started to inch our way back we were truly in control of the whole game,” said Coach Germann. “Even when we were down I thought that we were in control. It was just a matter of if we were going to finish shots.” Coach Germann started an all-freshman team giving the younger girls valuable playing time on the court. The visitors closed out the opening quarter with a 7-1 lead over the local girls. “I wanted to give the freshmen a chance to go out and prove themselves a little bit,” said Germann. “It’s unfortunate the situation we are given right now and the freshman don’t get to play in a lot of games. There are quite a few freshmen, we have 17 kids on the JV team and you can only dress 15 so they rotate who sits but it’s about giving kids an opportunity to play.” “They come to practice every day and they work hard and in my opinion they deserve the right
BRADFORD – The Bradford Lady Railroaders held on for a 42-39 win over the visiting National Trail Lady Blazers in Cross County Conference action. “The kids have played a lot of ball,” said Bradford coach Chris Besecker. “They are veteran players.” The Lady Blazers jumped out to a 7-4 lead at 3:15 in the first quarter before Bradford closed out play on a 6-4 run to trail 11-10 after one period of play. The Lady Railroaders battled back to take Period No. 2 by a 13-7 count sending the teams to the break with Bradford holding a 23-18 advantage. Bradford extended its third quarter lead to a double digit 29-19 advantage at 2:28 only to have National Trail use 10 unanswered points to even the score at 29-29 with 7:42 showing on the fourth quarter clock. “Trail made plays, stuck shots, we weren’t sticking shots and they crawled back into it,” said Besecker. “When we got down that fourth quarter with like two and a half to go, we didn’t panic. The kids just played basketball and made plays and got us back in the lead.” The Lady Trailblazers surged ahead 36-34 at 2:33 in the fourth. Bradford trailed by a point, 37-36 with a minute to play and would use Miller’s free throw shooting to lead 38-37, 40-37 before Trail would trail 40-39 with 0:04.4 showing on the game clock. Miller knocked down 2 more free throws at

to play,” continued Germann. “Because of COVID issues and having to play in the league – other teams in the league don’t have freshman teams, they didn’t have a chance to play games so with it being the last game I think they deserved an opportunity to go out and prove themselves.” “The score was 1-7 when I took them out or before I changed but they really didn’t do anything wrong other than they didn’t finish the shots,” Germann noted. With Coach Germann going to her JV squad in period No. 2, the Lady Wave battle back to take the quarter 13-5 sending the teams to the break with Greenville holding a slim 14-12 advantage. Gracie Thacker paced the Lady Wave with six second quarter points, Emalee Bowling 3-points
and Addie Klosterman and Laikyn Bruner each with 2-points. Solid defensive Lady Wave third quarter play held the visitors to 2-points while Greenville was adding 11-points to the board to lead 25-14 with one period to play. Bruner hit two baskets for 4-points, Klosterman was 3-4 at the line and Ava Loudy and Thacker each added 2-points rounding out third quarter play. The teams played to a 12-12 fourth quarter giving the Lady Wave JV a well-earned Miami Valley League win over Stebbins. Klosterman led fourth quarter Lady Wave scoring with 4-points, Thacker 3-points, Wright and Bowling 2-points each and a Bruner free throw. “We didn’t shoot real well from outside but Gracie Thacker and Emeely

0:02.9 to give the Bradford junior 13 consecutive free throws and the Lady Roaders a 3-point CCC victory. “That’s what we try to do in those situations,” Besecker state, “put the ball in Austy’s hands.” After missing her first free throw of the game, Austy Miller canned 13 consecutive free throws to lead Bradford and all scorers with a game high 23 points. The Lady Railroaders stand 15-5 on the season and 8-3 in conference play. “We’re having a solid season,” concluded Coach Besecker. “Its been a pretty good year to date.”

ARCANUM – The Arcanum Lady Trojans defeated the visiting Mississinawa Valley Lady Blackhawks 75-28 on senior night in Arcanum in Thursday night Cross County Conference play. Arcanum honored Hanna Smith, the lone Lady Trojans senior represented on the 2020-2021 varsity basketball team prior to the start of the game. Hannah is a hard worker,” said Arcanum coach Abbey Moore. “She doesn’t get as many minutes as the rest of the girls on the team but she gives it her all every day, she is here every day for practice and I am impressed by her work ethic. She is going to be a successful kid, never complains and never have any attitude out of her. Anything she does in the future she is going to be successful. I look forward to see what she is going to be able to become in the future.” The teams played to a 2-2 tie in the opening 2 minutes before Arcanum would take the opening

Franklin Monroe Bots to compete at state level Staff report
PITSBURG — Franklin Monroe’s First Lego League team, the Franklin Monroe-Bots, participated in the regional First Lego League Challenge competition against 19 other teams and qualified to move onto the state level competition. The First Lego League Challenge competition is for students ages 9-16 that involves researching, problem solving, coding, and engineering . The students are given a topic area and must identify and design a real world problem and solution for the competition. The other component to the competition is that students must also build and program a Lego robot to navigate missions of a robot game. This year the topic was “increasing physical activity.” The Franklin Monroe-Bots identified the problem of handicapped golfers needing a second person to tee up their ball. The team researched the problem and designed a mat and ball placement tool that would enable golfers using a special golf cart to golf independently. One of the team members then developed this device using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. Franklin Monroe recently purchased a 3-D printer that enabled the students to create an actual prototype to be used and tested. The team also built and programmed a robot made from Lego pieces that could move about a mission board and complete missions. Due to COVID-19, the competitions this year are held virtually. The state competition will be held between the dates of Feb. 25 to Mar. 14. Winners at the state competition will move on to the World Festival in Detroit. Franklin Monroe has participated in the First Lego League competition for the last three years.

GREENVILLE — As Christmas has come and gone, and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner,
expressing one’s everlasting love in the seemingly perfect gift can, occasionally, lead to impulse buying with unintended consequences. Each year, hundreds of “gift” puppies, kittens, dogs and cats are dropped off at animal shelters because their new owners failed to recognize that pet ownership can be a 10 (or more) year commitment
of emotional and financial care, including veterinary visits, housetraining, food and treats, toys, bedding, exercise, and playtime. Although many dogs and cats are waiting to be adopted, it is important to take the time to visit the shelter and interact with each prospective pet. See TAILS | 3B

GREENVILLE — Due to impending weather, the Wreaths Across America Retirement Ceremony has been changed to Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, at 1 p.m. followed by the removal of WAA wreaths at Greenville Union Cemetery. This is a special opportunity to again honor those who have served the country. Each veteran’s name is spoken as the wreath is retired so that they may live on citizens’ hearts and memories for all they sacrificed. Volunteers are asked to pick up only those WAA wreaths placed in December, leaving any other wreaths or decorations in place. Commercial dumpsters will be provided by Rumpke Waste & Recycling. It is recommended to wear gloves and bring a small cutting tool to cut zip ties. It is also suggested to bring a long stick, mop/broom handle or snow shovel to carry several wreaths at a time. If there is unexpected inclement weather, please check the Fort GreeneVille DAR Facebook page at www.facebook.com/fortgreenevilledar for a rescheduled removal date, or call the Greenville Union Cemetery office at 937-548-3235.

Last State Restricted Morgan Silver Dollar Bank Rolls go to OH residents Ohio residents get first dibs on last remaining Bank Rolls loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars dating back to the 1800’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the $ 59 minimum set for state residents - non state residents must pay $136 per coin if any remain after 2-day deadline
OH-70222432
STATE DISTRIBUTION: A strict limit of 4 State Restricted Bank Rolls per OH resident has been imposed “It’s a miracle these State Restricted Bank Rolls even exist. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Treasurer for the National Mint and Treasury. For the next 2 days the last remaining State of Ohio Restricted Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars are actually being handed over to Ohio residents who call the National Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. “I recently spoke with the retired Treasurer of the United States of America who said ‘In all my years as Treasurer I’ve only ever seen a handful of these rare Morgan Silver Dollars issued by the U. S. Gov’t back in the 1800’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Bank Rolls still in pristine condition is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of Ohio Restricted Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Ohio residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” Lynne said. “That’s because the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars sealed away inside the State of Ohio Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that all the coins date clear back to the 1800’s and are worth up to 100 times their face value, so there is no telling what Ohio residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne said. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Ohio you cover only the $59 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s ten rarely seen U. S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars’ worth up to 100 times their face value for just $590 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $136 per coin which totals $1,360 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. The only thing Ohio residents need to do is call the National Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s newspaper publication before the 2-day order deadline ends. “Rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Morgan Silver Dollars minted in the 1800’s are now worth $125 - $1,000 each in collector value,” Lynne said. “So just imagine how much these last remaining, unsearched State of Ohio Restricted Bank Rolls could be worth someday. Remember, these are not ordinary coins – these rarely seen coins are over 100 years old. In fact, these coins have been forever retired by the U.S. Gov’t, and you can’t get them rolled this way anywhere because these are the only State Restricted Bank Rolls known to exist,” Lynne said. “We’re guessing thousands of Ohio residents will be taking the maximum limit of 4 Bank Rolls because they make such amazing gifts for any occasion for children, parents, grandparents, friends and loved ones,” Lynne said. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s why hundreds of Hotline Operators are standing by to answer the phones beginning at 8:30am this morning. We’re going to do our best, but with just 2 days to answer all the calls it won’t be easy. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all,” Lynne said. “That’s why the National Mint
JACKPOT: Imagine finding the 1892-S Morgan Silver Dollar shown above worth thousands of dollars in collector value in one of these unsearched Bank Rolls. There are never any guarantees, but Ohio residents who get their hands on these State Restricted Bank Rolls will be the really lucky ones because even more common coins are still worth up to $125 - $1,000 in collector value.
VALUABLE: It’s like a treasure hunt there’s no telling what you’ll find. That’s because the dates and mint marks of the ten U.S. Gov’t issued coins sealed away inside these State of Ohio Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. All we know is some of the coins are worth up to 100 times their face value.
and Treasury set up the National Toll-Free Hotlines in order to make sure Ohio residents get the State Restricted Bank Rolls before
they’re all gone,” Lynne said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of
the state of Ohio and call the National Toll-Free Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow. ■
IMPORTANT: The dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars sealed away inside the State of Ohio Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. Coin values always fluctuate and they are never any guarantees, but any of the scarce coins shown below, regardless of their value that residents may find inside the sealed Bank Rolls are theirs to keep.
