Drug overdose numbers explode in Darke County CLINTON RANDALL

STAFF WRITER crandall@earlybirdpaper.com

DARKE COUNTY – The United States is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic…and Darke County is no exception. According to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, emergency personnel responded to at least 93 Darke County overdoses in 2016. 2017 is on-track to dwarf that number, with at least 31 being reported in January alone. “It appears to be a combination of how potent the heroin is and possibly more people becoming addicted,” stated Chief Deputy Mark Whittaker. “We really don’t know what the answer is and my concern is it will only get worse. We will just have to keep doing the best we can with the resources we have.” The Sheriff’s Office cur-

rently has two full-time drug detectives and two K-9 units to aid in combating the problem. Additionally, the Greenville Police Department has its own detective on-staff to handle local drug investigations for the city. “There has been a recent surge in meth, which is a stimulate and causing heroin use to increase,” explained Det. Jason Marion of the Greenville Police Department. “This is becoming more deadly with the more potent stuff coming in from Dayton.” Dayton is the main source for heroin, according to Det. Marion. This is also causing out-of-town addicts to make their way through Darke County en route to “scoring” their dope. “We are seeing all kinds of carnage on our roadways from these dopers,” noted

Darke County Sheriff Toby Spencer. “Nobody is holding them accountable and they are right back on the streets – doing the same things. I don’t know the answer, but we just keep chasing our tail and nobody is taking the bull by the horns and trying to fix it!” This time last year, the

Darke County Coroner’s Office recorded no suspected overdose-related deaths, but they have already investigated seven so far for 2017, according to Chief Medicolegal Death Investigator Joe Van Vickle. “This has become extremely costly for not only the families, but the entire

community,” Van Vickle said. “We are having to wait a lot longer time for toxicology reports and even needing to utilize the mass casualty storage facility in Montgomery County, because there are just so many people dying from suspected drug overdoses.” “With the introduction of new illegally made synthetic opiates, Carfentanyl, Sufentanyl and Acrylfentanyl, heroin users are overdosing at a rapid rate,” Greenville Rescue Chief Brian Phillips told The Early Bird. “These derivatives are much more potent and deadlier. The majority of our overdoses are not breathing and in some cases are in complete cardiac arrest.” In just the first week of February, his department responded to 12 overdose calls. “We are also finding

ourselves using more Narcan to resuscitate these patients,” added Chief Phillips. “In the beginning of 2016 on average 2-4 milligrams of Narcan would be enough, but in some cases today we are using up to 8 milligrams to bring the patient back.” “The hardest thing to see at these scenes is how it affects the families,” concluded Phillips. If you or someone you know suffering from opioid addiction, contact the Darke County Recovery and Wellness Center at (937) 548-6842 to learn about addiction resources available. Council appoints Downey as interim superintendent RYAN BERRY

MANAGING EDITOR editor@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – Greenville City Council learned at its Feb. 7 meeting they will need to hire an interim wastewater superintendent. The current superintendent of the department, Chuck Hapner, was in a serious vehicle accident on Jan. 30. Law Director Eric Brand said Hapner has been comatose since the accident and asked those who believe in prayer to pray. Council held a special meeting on Thursday, Feb. 9 to consider legislation to hire an interim superintendent. Former Wastewater Superintendent Vaughn Downey was given the nod to come back on a part-time basis. Downey retired from that position last June and Hapner took over as the interim superintendent until this fall when the interim tag was dropped. The ordinance approved by council would not exceed 180 days with a maximum of 20 hours per week as needed. Safety Service Director Curt Garrison asked council to consider a proposal from the Darke County Humane Society (DCHS) in reference to feral cats in the city. DCHS has a program that concentrates its efforts in a specific area to Trap, Neuter and Release feral cats. While the cats don’t immediately go

away, by sterilizing those that are there they are better able to control the population. The organization was able to use the program in an area of Greenville a couple years ago, but the grant money has been depleted. If the city chooses participate in the program, DCHS would offer a dollar-fordollar match. The biggest cost for the program is the cost of sterilizing the cats that are trapped, which ranges from $60$100 depending on the gender. Councilman Tryon suggested using community funds, which are funds derived from the “bed tax” collected by local hotels. The Greenville Finance Committee will consider the issue when it looks at how community funds will be disbursed this year. The Finance Committee will meet on Feb. 14, 8 a.m., in council chambers at the Municipal Building to review Community Funds. These funds have been used in the past to assist the Darke County Horseshoe Pitchers with their events in the Greenville City Park, pay fees for organization such as Main Street Greenville, Darke County Visitors Bureau and Darke County Historical Society and more recently with funding the July 4th firework celebration. The next regular meeting of Greenville City Council will be Feb. 21, 7:30 p.m., council chambers.

Littles and Bigs pair up for mentoring program SUSAN HARTLEY

STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com

ANSONIA – Some lucky Ansonia Elementary ‘Littles’ spent some quality one-on-one time Tuesday afternoon with their best ‘Bigs.’ The Big Buddies High School Mentoring Program, which pairs up freshmen through senior ‘Bigs’ with K-4th grade ‘Littles,’ is sponsored by the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Shelby and Darke County. So far, three Darke County schools are participating in the twice a month after school program, including Greenville, Versailles and Ansonia. About 20 Ansonia elementary students have been referred to participate in the mentoring program, either by a teacher, principal or their parents, said Rebecca Cotterman, program director for Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Students who may be struggling academically or socially are candidates for the mentoring program, Cotterman explained. One plus, she noted about the after school pro-

gram is that “we don’t separate by age. We mix them up so the kindergarten students can learn who the fourth-graders are.” Junior Amber Aultman said she began volunteering as a Big Buddy “to make the kids happy and give them a person to look up to. I learned sometimes you have to be patient” with the Littles, she said. Amber’s Little, Wyatt, is a kindergarten student who said his favorite part of the Big Buddy program is “reading” and he thinks the high schoolers “are nice.” During the first meeting of each month, the Bigs and Littles spend time reading from Sean Covey’s “7 Habits of Happy Kids,” which features colorful drawings of animals and their habitat. Each chapter introduces a habit to help young students set goals and learn appropriate social behaviors. On Tuesday, a story about Lily, a skunk who wanted to plant a garden, was read by each Big to their Little partners. The story gave ideas on why it’s important to take into consideration another’s feelings – Lily’s mom really

didn’t want Lily to plant the garden because she thought she’d end up doing most, if not all, of the work. Cotterman facilitated a discussion on respecting the feelings of others, asking questions the Littles eagerly raised their hands to answer. “Why is it important to make other people happy and not just yourself” and “Treat others the way you want to be treated” were two topics the children discussed with Cotterman. Students also are challenged to put what they’ve read into action, with Cotterman throwing out ideas they may consider. “Try to be positive and happy, go a day without sulking or pouting, make a wish poster, ask a classmate how you can help them be happy,” Cotterman suggested. Fourth-grader Isabella has participated in the mentoring program since she was a kindergartner. “I like the things they teach me,” she said. “It’s helping me learn new words. In my class, I am recognizing words.” Junior Katelyn McKenna has been volunteer-

ing for three years as a Big Buddy to Kayla, a thirdgrader. “It’s a good opportunity and a good experience and you get to be involved with the little kids, to learn their different personalities. They are able to look up to us and we can be their role models,” Katelyn explained. Julie Oswalt, a freshman, also enjoys volunteering twice a month as a Big Buddy. “I really like it. It’s good for the kids to be interacting with the high school students. We can teach them a little of what we know,” she said. Jocelin, a second-grader, nodded in agreement with her Big Buddy Julie. “She’s my best friend,” Jocelin said, giving Julie a big hug. Cotterman said more high schoolers are needed so elementary students can be paired one-on-one with a Big Buddy. The goal she said, is to try to pair a kindergarten or first-grade student with a freshman so they can be together for the duration of the program. For more information, call Cotterman at 5479622.

house, to exit the vehicle. Whitehouse consented to a pat down for weapons, and told the ofďŹ cer the baseball bat was in the car because they had just ďŹ nished helping someone move. Whitehouse also admitted there was a handgun with ammunition inside the vehicle. Another ofďŹ cer was called to the scene. The handgun was found to be partially concealed in the console under several papers, which appeared to be placed as if to conceal the weapon. Several rounds of ammunition also were found inside the car. Also found on the oor of the vehicle was a bag of marijuana. Whithouse was advised of his Miranda Rights and detained while the assistant county prosecutor was contacted. She advised the ofďŹ cer to charge Whitehouse with carrying a concealed weapon. The juvenile was found to be on probation through juvenile court. Charges are pending on the juvenile in reference to a scale with marijuana residue found in his possession. The juvenile was released to his father. Whitehouse was transported to the Darke County Jail and incarcerated. DRUGS On Feb. 6 the police department received a report of a female suspect (not named in the report) turning blue at a residence in the 300 block of East Fifth Street. Police ofďŹ cers followed Greenville Township Rescue into the residence where they found a young juvenile alone in the kitchen of the residence. One of the ofďŹ cers stayed with the child, while another went upstairs to ďŹ nd the suspect kneeling on her bed crying. Greenville Rescue said they repositioned the suspect and her color had returned. Rescue said she had been blue and was gurgling for breath until they repositioned her. The suspect’s mother said she found her daughter having trouble breathing and turning blue and called 911. The suspect said she had injected herself with heroin. She said she had been in treatment at the NOVA center in Dayton and had been released last November. The suspect said this was the ďŹ rst time she had used drugs since getting out of treatment. A hypodermic needle was found on the bed beside the suspect. The suspect was asked who she had bought the drugs from, but said she did not know. The suspect was asked if she had any other drugs. After looking around, the suspect handed me a bag containing eight unused hypodermic needles. The suspect went to the other side of the bedroom and retrieved a small plastic baggie containing a small amount of white powder, which she said was heroin. The suspect

said the young child in the home was her two-year-old son and he was not upstairs when she overdosed. The suspect was transported to Wayne Hospital for care. The child was left in care of his grandmother. A report was faxed to Children’s Services. The suspect was advised she had 30 days to seek treatment for her addiction. She said she wanted help and would ďŹ nd treatment. She was advised she could be charged with drug possession if she does not follow up with treatment. OfďŹ cers will check back in 30 days to see if she has sought treatment. The suspect’s needles and powder were transported to the Greenville Police Department and placed into property as evidence. DUI On Feb. 5 a vehicle was observed traveling the wrong way on West Fifth Street. An ofďŹ cer conducted a trafďŹ c stop and when he made contact with the driver, Caleb Hickey, the ofďŹ cer detected a strong smell of alcohol. When asked about alcohol consumption, Hickey said he’d had a few beers at a friend’s house. Hickey was asked to exit the car and did poorly on ďŹ eld sobriety tests. He was transported to the Greenville Police Department, where he failed a breath test. He told ofďŹ cers he had too many drinks at a bar in Union City, Ind. and shouldn’t have been driving. Hickey was placed under an administrative license suspension and a citation for OVI and a oneway street violation. On Feb. 6 an ofďŹ cer was dispatched to Eleventh Street near Hart Avenue in reference to a crash without injuries. Upon arrival, the ofďŹ cer made contact with the defendant, Michael Stewart who was standing alongside the roadway. Stewart had a strong odor of alcohol and his eyes were glossy. Stewart told the ofďŹ cer he was driving eastbound when he struck a parked unoccupied vehicle facing east in front of 415 Eleventh Street. The ofďŹ cer observed the defendant’s vehicle to have damage to the front passenger side and the unoccupied vehicle to have rear driver’s side damage, which is consistent with Stewart’s statement. The husband of the registered owner of the unoccupied vehicle, Kenneth Smith showed up on scene and was advised of the damage to his vehicle. While speaking with the defendant, the ofďŹ cer noticed his speech was slightly slurred and he was trying to cover his mouth while speaking in order to conceal the odor of alcohol. When asked about alcohol consumption prior to driving, Stewart admitted he had two beers. It was also later discovered

Stewart was 19 years old. He was asked to perform ďŹ eld sobriety tests to which he agreed and did poorly. He was placed under arrest for OVI and transported to the Greenville Police Department, where he agreed to a breath test. Stewart was placed under an administrative license and issued a citation for assured clear distance as well as OVI. The defendant was released to the custody of his father. On Feb. 8 an ofďŹ cer was dispatched to the 300 block of Broadway Street on the report of a female subject asleep in a vehicle. Upon arrival, the ofďŹ cer noticed vomit on the driver’s side door and on the pavement. The suspect’s head was against the driver’s side window. The ofďŹ cer knocked on the door window several times, but the subject, who was identiďŹ ed as Cheryle Blankenship, did not respond. When the ofďŹ cer opened the driver’s side door, Blankenship was able to wake up without falling out of the car. The ofďŹ cer noticed what appeared to be vomit inside the car. When asked what she was doing, according to the report, Blankenship said “VFW.â€? She ďŹ nally was able to tell ofďŹ cers she had been drinking at the VFW. Blankenship was asked to exit the vehicle and upon doing so, had to steady herself by placing her hands on the outside of the car. OfďŹ cers noted in the report she was unable to stand without holding onto the car. She refused to complete ďŹ eld sobriety tests and was transported to the Greenville Police Department, where she refused to take a breath test. Blankenship was placed under immediate administrative license suspension and her license was seized. She was issued a citation for physical control. WANTED PERSON On Feb. 7 police were advised by a probation ofďŹ cer defendant Sterling Seiler was possibly at an apartment in the 200 block of 12th Street. Upon arrival, an ofďŹ cer met with

a resident who said Seiler was inside the apartment. The resident led police to a bedroom where they placed Seiler under arrest in reference to a Darke County felony warrant with the original charge of breaking and entering. The defendant was incarcerated in the Darke County Jail. On Feb. 1 an ofďŹ cer was called to the 100 block of Chestnut Street on the report of Joshua Mitchell walking with a female. Mitchell was wanted for an outstanding warrant for failure to appear for arraignment on driving under suspension and expired registration with a $1,026 bond. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Darke County Jail. On Feb. 2 an ofďŹ cer made contact with Loretta Grace in front of Danny’s Place Bar, 308 S Broadway. The ofďŹ cer had prior knowledge Grace had an active warrant for her arrest through the Darke County Municipal Court for failure to appear for numerous curfew/contributing to the delinquency of a minor with a bond of $525. The ofďŹ cer asked if Grace had anything on her person that would be considered contraband. She said she had marijuana and cocaine in her boots. The ofďŹ cer asked Grace to remove her boots. A bag of cocaine and a bag of marijuana were found and conďŹ scated and transported to the police department. Grace was transported to the Darke County Jail and incarcerated for her warrant on a bond of $525. On Jan. 26 an ofďŹ cer was dispatched to the Circle Mart, 100 East Main St. to assist a Darke County detective with a wanted person identiďŹ ed as Joseph King. Upon arrival, the ofďŹ cer made contact with the detective, who had the defendant in custody. King was transported to the Darke County Jail where he was incarcerated. The warrant was through Darke Municipal Court for failure to appear on a driving under suspension trafďŹ c offense.

Outdoor group forms at Ansonia FCOG ANSONIA – If you are someone who loves spending time outdoors fishing, hunting, camping or shooting, there is a new group that is a great place to connect with those who have the same interest. The Ansonia First Church of God is beginning a group that is open to anyone 16 years or older who enjoys the outdoors. They will spend time sharing tips and techniques to make you more successful in your outdoor activities. If you are an expert, come and share your knowledge. If you are new to these outdoor activities, this is a great opportunity

to learn new things from others who are knowledgeable. The goal is to create the same atmosphere as the hunting or fishing camp, where they can just sit around share stories and share life. In today’s fast paced, busy world it is important to have some time to slow down and just spend time with friends. That is truly the goal of this group. Their first meeting will be Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the church, 750 South Main St., Ansonia. Park in the back lot and enter the back doors. Future meetings will be held every second

Monday of the month at the same time. Their goal is to plan some activities and trips for the men and their families this upcoming year. FORT RECOVERY – The Greenville Boys varsity basketball team traveled to Fort Recovery to record their 11th win of the season by a 64-49 score over the Indians. “With sickness and stuff we had a short bench tonight,â€? said Greenville Coach Kyle Joseph. “I was really proud of my guys for gutting it out.â€? An Aaron Rich bucket and an Isaiah Gable threepointer staked the Wave to a 5-0 lead at 6:37 in the ďŹ rst on their way to an impressive 20-7 ďŹ rst period ending advantage by way of seven Gable points, Rich and Peter Pandy with four each, a Will Coomer threepointer and a Trae Wood basket. Period No. 2 had the home team putting 13 points on the board while Greenville cooled off on the offensive end scoring eight points sending the teams to the break with the Wave leading by a 2820 score. Fort Recovery is a good tough team,â€? noted Joseph. “We came out strong but they kept ďŹ ghting ‌ battling back.â€? Rich led the Wave with eight of the team’s 14 third quarter points while holding the home team to 12 giving Greenville a double digit 42-32 with one period to play. The Wave’s 6’6â€? Isaiah

Pandy chipped in ďŹ ve fourth quarter points, Rich four, Jordan Preston two, T. Wood two, and Noah Vanhorn one giving the Green Wave the non-conference road win. “It was pretty typical

for us, Coach Joseph said of his team’s play. “They played some zone, more zone than what we’ve been playing against at times. We handled it pretty well. At other times we got rushed a little bit. It was good to see some different looks. Isaiah Gable led all scorers in the game with 21 points followed by 18 Aaron Rich points.

CASSTOWN – Mandi Bates became the third Bradford Lady Railroader to reach the 1,000 point mark at 6:41 in the second quarter of play against the Miami East Lady Vikings in a Saturday afternoon game. “Nobody deserves it more than this kid,â€? said Bradford Varsity Girls Head Coach Patrick McKee. “For ďŹ ve years now I’ve watched this kid play basketball, her eighth grade year and then obviously her high school levels.â€? “I would like to ďŹ nd a harder worker than her,â€? continued McKee. “Ever since her freshman year she has been a special kid both on the court and off the court. It has really been enjoyable to coach Mandi over the last four years. Couldn’t have happened to a better person today.â€? Needing eight points to reach 1,000 points, Bates scored ďŹ ve ďŹ rst quarter points including a threepointer to stake the Lady Railroaders to an 11-8 lead with 2:58 on the ďŹ rst quarter clock. “I thought we played them well the ďŹ rst half,â€? McKee said. “At one point we were down four, had the lead there a few times early in the game.â€? The Lady Viking would close out ďŹ rst quarter play with ďŹ ve unanswered points to lead 13-11 going to the second period of play. With 6:41 showing on the second quarter clock, Bradford’s Mandi Bates drove the lane laying a layup off the glass from the right side for her 999th point to knot the score at 13-13. Taking advantage of an old fashioned three point play, Bates was all net from the free-throw line giving the Bradford senior her 1,000th career point while giving her Lady Railroaders a 14-13 lead. With the milestone in hand, the game was halted as Vandalia’s Jeff Fruhwirth, one of three game referees presented Mandi Bates the game ball at half-court to a standing ovation from both sides of

the court. The Lady Vikings would bounce back to outscore the visitors 16-6 over the ďŹ nal six minutes of the second quarter sending the teams to the break with Miami East holding a 29-20 advantage. Period No. 3 belonged to the home team, taking the quarter by a 26-5 count to lead 55-25 with three periods in the book. “We kinda fell apart defensively there in the second half and that’s something that happened to us a few times this week,â€? noted McKee. “That’s something we need to get better ‌ we need to get geared up for tournament.â€? The Lady Railroaders battle back to take the fourth quarter by a 12-8 score with Bates leading her team with ďŹ ve points to give the newest member of the 1,000 point club 16 points on the day. Bates is the last link to the 2013-14 Lady Railroaders Sectional Cham-

pionship team, a team that shattered the school previous high of 14 games, winning 20 games in the record setting season. Mandi, a freshman on the 2013-14 championship team was ďŹ rst off the bench for Coach McKee as the team’s starting ďŹ ve was made up of ďŹ ve seniors including Mandi’s sister, Bree Bates, one of the ďŹ ve starters on the team. “Just an unbelievable kid in general,â€? said McKee. “She had a great experience her freshman year, to be able to play with her sister and then obviously a lot of her really close friends and be successful in that situation we had that year.â€? “That group of kids and Mandi Bates and this group of kids are a group of kids that are going to have a special place in my heart forever just because of the hard work that they put in and the things they were able to accomplish,â€? concluded McKee.

Versailles topples unbeaten Lady Patriots BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com

VERSAILLES – The Versailles Lady Tigers put their D-III No. 8 state ranking up against the state’s No. 2 ranked and undefeated D-IV Tri-Village Lady Patriots defeating the girls from New Madison 54-38. “Playing a Tri-Village is a team we want to play every single game and I think that our schedule is really packed with those types of teams, said Versailles Coach Jacki Stonebraker. “That hopefully will carry us into the tournament. A Kami Ording threepointer to open the game’s scoring had the Lady Tigers taking a 3-0 lead followed by an Allie Downing

Patriots’ three-pointer and an Emma Printz basket giving Tri-Village an early 5-3 advantage. Ording drained her second trey at 3:57 in the ďŹ rst putting Versailles up 6-5 only to have Edie Morris hit the backend of two free-throws to knot the score a 6-6 with 0:51 on the clock. “That was a lot of fun wasn’t it,â€? Stonebraker said, “Kami (Ording) with two threes to start the game ‌ that’s what she’s in there for. She came out with a lot of ďŹ re and her shot was on.â€? BRADFORD – Three Bradford Lady Railroaders took the court for their ďŹ nal home game, Mandi Bates, Ally Booker and Olivia Hart. The visiting Tri-Village Lady Patriots used the night to claim the outright Cross County Conference Championship by defeating Bradford 71-30. Tri-Village took a 17-5 lead after one and pushed its halftime advantage to 35-15. The Lady Patriots limited Bradford to two third quarter points while adding 19 points to the book to lead 54-17 after three.

Mandi Bates led the Lady Railroaders with nine of her teams 13 fourth quarter points. Bates led Bradford and all scorers in the game with 21 points while the Lady Patriots put 10 players in the scoring column led by 19 Danika Mann points. Bradford Lady Railroaders coach Patrick McKee took time to comment on his three seniors. “It’s going to hurt to lose somebody like this both on the court off the court, McKee said of Mandi Bates. “Obviously the accomplishments she has had this year, 1,000th point, just really becoming a well-rounded player offensively. She’s going to hurt to lose a lot.

“Olivia Hart, she’s a sparkplug,â€? said McKee. “She uses her speed, she’s great defensively. Defense wins games, as simple as that. We’ve won some games because of Olivia and we’re going to have to work hard to replace that next year.â€? “Ally Booker, she’s always been a workhorse,â€? McKee said. “She does what you ask. She’s one of those kids ‌ all three of these seniors you ask them to run through a wall and they give you their best attempt. Ally works hard. She wants to learn more about the game.â€? “Losing these three seniors at the end year, somebody is going to have

to step up to replace them to try to ďŹ ll some shoes that we are going to lose,â€? added McKee.

Union City (21-4) will have a rematch with TriCentral (19-6) on Saturday in the IHSAA Class A Regional semiďŹ nal. The Lady

Stonebraker noted. “I really thought that set the tone for the game.â€? “She played like a senior tonight,â€? Stonebraker said of her 6’1â€? freshman Lindsey Winner. “She played really well ‌ under control. She plays with a power dribble and she’s hard to stop especially when we have those three bigs in there.â€? Back-to-back Elizabeth Ording free-throws at 4:40 in the third had Versailles with 32-22 double digit lead, a double digit

lead that would hold up throughout the remainder of the game. Leading 39-24 to open fourth quarter play, Versailles was one better in the ďŹ nal period going 1019 at the line and take the non-conference game by a 54-38 score. “We just can’t hit free throws,â€? Stonebraker said of her team’s 16-31 at the line on the night. “It’s across board. It’s not just one person. A lot of people shot free throws tonight ‌ 16-31. It’s not pretty but we got to the line 31 times. That’s pretty good.â€? In the early game, Versailles JV team defeated the Lady Patriots JV squad by a 40-29 score.

STAR 88.3 shares the love with Greenville woman BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – Greenville resident Becky Steiner was surprised Tuesday, Feb. 7, when she was presented a Share the Love gift basket during the weekly dance she attends at the Eagles Lodge. STAR 88.3’s Darke County Community Representative Naomi Cantrell shared thoughts from a letter of nomination by Steiner’s childhood friend, Holly Tryon, who said she would forever be impressed by Steiner’s positive attitude and willingness to serve those around her. “I nominated her because she is so positive, loving and giving. Tryon said. “She trusts in the Lord, always has a smile on her face. When I get down, I think about Becky and what she does. She’s just always there. Steiner meets her challenges with a positive attitude. For example,. her son, Chris Shaw, 43, continues to suffer with brain injuries he obtained following a car accident as a teenager. Although Chris lives independently, Steiner continues to look out for his care and provide hot, home cooked meals each week. She’s also a caregiver to her mother, Bernice Cyphers, 87, providing meals and taking her to

doctor appointments. The assistance and love Becky shows to family and others, says Tryon, is given “so freely. She’s so giving. She brings other people out of the slump. She’s so loving and so caring for others who are struggling with some of the things we all struggle with. When presented with the STAR 88.3 gift basket, Steiner said she thought to herself “Oh, my goodness. What have I done to deserve this? Besides caring for her son and mother, Steiner also takes time to babysit for her daughter Lisa’s children, working with them on reading, writing and spelling skills. “I do that in my spare time, Steiner said with a laugh. “I’ve always believed in helping people. Steiner, who worked at Corning for 20 years and at Greenville’s Arby’s for 11 years, is a 1971 GHS graduate. She and Tryon, also a 1971 graduate, have been friends since elementary school. Steiner’s advice to others is for them to remember “you’re not alone. God’s always there. I know he walks with me. Steiner’s gift basket included a variety of goodies provided by STAR 88.3, as well as items from Greenville’s Bread of Life and dinner coupons from local restaurants, Cantrell said.

graduation, the student must commit at least three years of employment with Midmark. Paid out incrementally throughout a fouryear program, the recipient is chosen based on his or her application and interview with an internal panel of Midmark Teammates. Renee Schmitmeyer is the 2009 recipient of the Midmark Technical Scholarship. Upon graduating high school, she began pursuing an engineering degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Schmitmeyer had a keen interest in healthcare and physics, leading her to choose a biomedical engineering focus. During her summers off, she took advantage of her secured internships at Midmark—first on the assembly line, then operations, and her final two summers of undergrad were spent in new product development. Now a new product development engineer at Midmark, Schmitmeyer shared “There was so much value to starting in production in my current role as an engineer. I became well-acquainted with our products and their components, and now, I am able to easily take the assembly process into account when designing new products.” She continues, “The technical scholarship program gave me the opportunity to pursue an education at a one of the nation’s best schools for my discipline, and also helped me decide to pursue a master’s in engineering management. And knowing that I had a full-time job lined up after graduation was just icing on the cake.” When asked why she continues to stay with Midmark, Schmitmeyer stated, “Midmark has one of the best cultures—professional, but relaxed. I like the people, their values and the reward of knowing that our healthcare products and services help people.” Midmark is pleased to support education and learning within its communities. This is the eighteenth

year Midmark has offered a technical scholarship. Eligible students should contact their guidance counselor for

Darke Co. Upward Sports gets AED CLINTON RANDALL

DARKE COUNTY – The Dylan Williams Forever An All-Star Foundation presented the Darke County Upward Sports organization with automated external defibrillator (AED) this past Saturday. The life-saving device will be on-hand for all of the weekend basketball and cheerleading events in case of an emergency cardiac situation like the one that claimed the life of 8-year-old Dylan at an all-star baseball practice in July 2013. Since the tragedy, the Williams family has donated AED devices to many area sporting venues and school facilities through

foundation donations. “I think its amazing that the Williams family has used such a terrible tragedy in their own lives to bless others,” said Darke County Upward Sports Director Barb Hicks. “This addition to our program and our facility will give so much peace of mind.” “What a wonderful way to honor the memory of their son,” she added. Local girls invited to Clover Confidence SUSAN HARTLEY

STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com

DARKE COUNTY – Girls in grades 5-8 are invited to participate in what organizer Molly Hunt hopes will become a yearly event. On March 24, young ladies from around Darke County are invited to attend Clover Confidence – BFFs (Building Fearless Females) at St. Clair House, 224 E. Third St. The event will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. Hunt, who is currently serving as Darke County Junior Fair Queen, said she wanted to “do something that would make an impact on the community.” A senior at Greenville High School, Hunt approached Rhonda Williams, Darke County 4-H Extension Educator about organizing a program for elementary and junior high age girls. “I wanted to do an event to teach about self-confidence, how to be young ladies. These are lessons you don’t always learn about in school. These are what 4-H is all about.” After conferring with Williams, Clover Confidence – BFFs was planned with Hunt’s goals in mind – to teach positive life skills. Current 4-H youth and former county fair queens will be leading the workshop topics. “It’s been fun bringing back former fair queens to participate. It’s also a way of honoring them,” Hunt said. Fifth- through eighthgrade girls who attend will

learn basic etiquette and confidence skills, Hunt said, as well as decorate a small mirror with a personalized message they will be able to look at each morning to get a “jump start” on their day. Hunt also is planning a service project each girl may complete that evening – Letters in Motion, with participants writing letters of encouragement to young girls in Kenya and Nepal. Tracy Wheeler of LuLaRoe Fashions also will be on hand for those wishing to participate in a fashion show. Hunt, who will be attending The Ohio State University this coming fall to major in geology and 4-H Education, hopes the Clover Confidence – BFFs will continue after this year. “I hope it becomes an annual event, but that will be up to the next fair queen. I’d love to see it continue,” she said. A $5 registration fee will cover the cost of a BFF Tshirt, craft materials and snacks. The registration deadline is March 3. Girls do not have to be current 4-H members to attend. Registration forms are available at all of the county’s elementary, middle and junior high schools and may be submitted with payment made to Darke County 4-H Committee and sent to OSU Extension, Darke County, 603 Wagner Ave., Greenville, OH 45331. For more information, contact the county’s OSU Extension office at 5485215.

GREENVILLE – The Darke County Chamber of Commerce hosted its 10th annual Groundhog Day Breakfast on Friday. The event, held at Romer’s Catering in Greenville, included updates on the area housing market from the Dayton Area Board of REALTORS President, Karen O’Grady. The real estate update was followed by keynote speaker for the event, Donn M. Goodman, Senior VP of Atlanta Sosnoff Capital, who presented a forecast prediction of economic and market implications that will likely occur during the Trump administration. Goodman’s talk highlighted where the economy is headed, along with employment, housing and world inflation through policies in which President Trump is likely to implement during his time in

office. He also touched on issues that the American economy will likely face in the wake of terrorism, war and burdens like an aging population. “Donn Goodman’s presentation provided good information on what to expect in the economy and markets in 2017 and beyond. I enjoyed hearing about the advances in technology coming that will impact individuals and businesses. His topics were very informative and pertinent for Chamber members,” said Second National Bank President John Swallow. To conclude his presentation, Goodman address the ever changing and advancing technology that will be unveiling in the coming years. From artificial healthcare and stem cell research to fully autonomous cars, technology is advancing at rapid pace and is destined to change our world like never before. “The Economic out-

look presentation by Donn Goodman was tremendous. In particular, the realization that future technologies advancements in all industries is coming at a rapid pace,” stated Darke County Economic Development Director Mike Bowers. “This insight is very important for us to hear at a local level because we can be somewhat insulated in Darke County. The effects that it will have for us and especially future generations will be critical for how we look at opportunities and

Faith, family always top priority for Bradford couple SUSAN HARTLEY

STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com

BRADFORD – Relying on faith and family are two key ingredients for a successful marriage, say Scot and Chris Canan of Bradford. “We both have leaned on our Christian faith to help us through the difficult times. Probably the most important thing we have come to know about our life,” Chris said on Jan. 23 - their 46th anniversary. The past year has been quite eventful for the couple, both 1970 Bradford High School graduates. Scot, who worked for the Miami County Educational Service Center was set to retire June 30, 2016. On June 6, he became ill. “We went to the hospital,” said Chris, who had been employed in the accounting department with Upper Valley Medical Center and formerly Dettmer Hospital in Troy for 28 years. She’s now an agent with Littman Thomas Insurance in Bradford. After learning Scot had some heart problems, which were initially taken care of, doctors determined heart surgery would be necessary in the near future. Instead of spending the summer months enjoying Scot’s retirement, the couple made the decision to get the surgery done as soon as possible. In August, they traveled to Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati for the procedure. The couple’s daughters and their families stepped up and helped out with mowing grass, cleaning off

sidewalks and visiting in Cincinnati. Following heart surgery, Scot’s medical ordeal wasn’t quite over – he came down with shingles, which got passed on to his four-month old grandson in the form of chicken pox. Then one icy January morning, while going out to warm up his wife’s car as a courtesy, Scot slipped and broke his ankle. He again found himself at the hospital for surgery. On their anniversary late last month the couple was still waiting for the swelling to go down so Scot could get a cast on his foot. Chris says Scot has always been there to do things for her, that some may find trivial - like starting the car on a cold morning. “I do it out of respect for her,” he explains. “I’m one of those guys who opens doors” for women. “We’ve had our share of ups and down,” Chris laughed, noting that their 46th anniversary would be spent pretty much like every other day – work and a meeting at church and time with kids and grandkids. “We never ever considered not being together,” she said, with her husband nodding in agreement. The two began dating as sophomores at Bradford. Following their marriage they made the decision to stay close to family and friends. Today, the couple’s three grown daughters and their families, Scot says, “live within throwing distance.” Their family includes daughter Stacy and Keith Hill and children Scotty and Caitlyn; daughter

Brandie and Kevin Fout and children K.C. and Hannah; and daughter Holly and Chad Felver and children Bryson, Avery and Jackson. The couple also has two great-grandchildren, Rowan and Zayne Hill. The Canans are active with Bradford’s United Methodist Church and enjoy spending time with their seven grandchildren, going to school and sports activities. The couple has been active in several Bradford community activities. Chris worked for 30 years with the Bradford Pumpkin Show. Scot spent 17 helping with the Pumpkin Show confetti committee. Over the years, the couple supported village programs like the Summer Rec and Pee Wee organizations. Scot coached football and Chris coached cheerleading. Family life has been top priority for the Canans. When her parents and grandmother were ill, there was no question that Scot supported Chris in caring for them. “We just worked it out together,” Chris said, ex-

plaining how she took the third shift to care for her ailing grandmother. “The girls were little, but we stayed together as a family,” with the kids going over to grandma’s after school where the family would have dinner and do homework together. The same schedule took place when Chris’ dad passed away and she was needed to care for her mother. The Canans believe today’s views are detriment to a successful marriage. “We both came from families where divorce wasn’t common. You stay together. People today give up too quickly. Divorce is made too easy. They take the easy way out.” Chris admits this past year has been difficult. “Scot’s heart scare was a real scare for us. You work all your life together and I never thought of life without him,” she said. “Every time she leaves the house we make a joke out of giving each other a kiss,” Scot said. “We’ll go outside by the car and make a big joke out of making sure no one is looking. It’s our tradition.”

T-V students make Valentines for Vets

NEW MADISON – As part of the outreach program of Unit 245 American Legion Auxiliary under the Youth Chairmanship of Marian Eley, members of the Auxiliary and Legionnaires visited the fourthgrade classrooms at Tri-Village School during the Valentines for Vets program. Colored paper, stickers, paper doilies, glue and assorted art supplies were distributed to the students who, with heart-warming enthusiasm, created original valentines for patients of the

Dayton VA Hospital in appreciation of service to their country. Students demonstrated and practiced skills in letter writing, penmanship, social studies, history, art, spelling and community service. A lively question and answer period took place between the students and the veterans building awareness of history and appreciation of the job the military does to protect the rights guaranteed under the Constitution to all United States citizens.

SPRINGFIELD – The American Red Cross and White Castle, Inc., Columbus-based restaurant known for its “Sliders,” are partnering to “Turn White Castle Red for Valentine’s Day.” The two organizations are inviting visitors to area restaurants between now and Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, to eat, drink and raise money for the Red Cross. When customers place an order, either in-store or at the drive-thru, they are being invited to purchase Red Cross icons for $1, $3 or $5 that are then displayed on the walls of the restaurant, all with the intent to “Turn White Castle Red for Valentine’s Day.” Donations gen-

erated through the purchase of the icons go to fund critical programs of the Red Cross, including disaster relief, emergency messaging to the Armed Forces and community preparedness education, among others. The mission of the Red Cross is carried out by a workforce that is made up of 94 percent volunteers, fueled by the generosity of donors. “We’re delighted and honored to recognize the kindness of White Castle and their customers,” says Lynne Gump, executive director of the Northern Miami Valley Ohio Chapter of the American Red Cross. “White Castle has been a wonderful partner in our work, and we couldn’t be more

Preparing for Maple Sugarin’ at the Prairie GREENVILLE – This week the maple sap has started to run, and many Darke County Parks’ volunteers have fired up the sugar shack for the maple sugaring season. Freezing nights and thawing days cause the sap to move, bringing the sweetness one step closer to

the table. For some volunteers it will be just another February, for others it’s an opportunity to learn a new skill and help out the park district at the same time. The Maple Sugarin’ at the Prairie Festival will be held March 4, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. This late winter day at

Shawnee Prairie offers guided tours through history and science, learning the process of turning sap into syrup. After the tour through the woods, visit the sugar shack, and warm up in the steamfilled evaporator room as the sap spends countless hours on a boil to reduce it down to syrup. Then head out to the log house and blacksmith shop to visit with the early settlers and

discuss life on the frontier. Finally, complete the day at the Nature Center where the gift shop and bake sale will be full of maple goodies fit for any sweet tooth. The Friends of the Parks will once again be serving up a hearty breakfast of waffles, sausage, juice, coffee, and of course pure Ohio maple syrup. Adult tickets are $6 and children 3-12 are $3. Carryout is available, and extra

fering helpful information throughout the month on how Ohioans can make sure their heart health is strong and how eggs can help. “Thousands of individuals and families made the resolution in 2017 to eat healthier and take better care of themselves – especially with their heart health – and are looking for ways to maintain their resolutions as the year continues,” said Jim Chakeres, executive vice president, OPA. “Eating healthier and treating your heart better begins with consuming a wholesome and nutritious breakfast that’s filled with protein-packed eggs every day.” For decades, consumers have been given mixed messages about dietary cholesterol, especially as it relates to eggs. However, egg lovers can rejoice because research proves that healthy adults can enjoy eggs daily without affecting their risk of heart disease. Eggs offer several beneficial nutrients to promote overall health. As an excellent source of selenium, eggs are one of the most affordable proteins available to Ohioans and include essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin

B phosphorus and riboflavin, which actually helps prevent heart disease. Each large egg also contains only 70 calories, helping consumers feel fuller longer. Additionally, research shows that eggs eaten at the start of the day can reduce overall daily calorie intake, prevent snacking between meals, and keep an appetite satisfied on those busy days when mealtime is delayed. “Eggs can make a positive impact as part of your well-rounded, healthy diet and can help you build muscle mass and maintain a healthy weight” said Chakeres. “American Heart Month is a great time to remember that eggs contain less cholesterol as previously thought and because they are extremely versatile, eggs can be eaten at any time of day - breakfast, lunch, dinner and for snacks.” During American Heart Month, and every month, Ohioans have every reason to take advantage of the high-quality protein, broad nutritional benefits and versatility that eggs offer. Ohio is the secondlargest egg farming state in the nation and produces more than 9 billion eggs a year.
