PAGE 2 - DARKE COUNTY SHERIFF’S PATROL HOME AND SPORTS SHOW - SUPPLEMENT TO THE EARLY BIRD - MARCH 13, 2016

To the GREAT Citizens of Darke County The Darke County Sheriff’s Patrol cordially invites you to attend our 54th annual Home and Sports Show March 18, 19 and 20th at The Great Darke County Fairgrounds. Although the winter could have been a lot worse, (look at the east coast) it was a cold winter, maybe I am just getting older. Living in Florida or Arizona may not be all that bad during the winter months, then I would miss all of the Fantastic Basketball games that our county young ladies and men performed this past season. It is time to get off the couch, put on lighter coat and head outside, hibernation is over. With the help of some very special friends of The Sheriffs Patrol, we have put together a gathering of retailers, and business vendors that bring an offering of their products, services and show specials that hopefully will fit a need in your projects for this spring, summer and fall. We should have something for everyone, be it remodeling, landscape, building, bikes, entertainment, kiddie tractor pull, food, candy, or just fun, hopefully something there to peak your interest. As many of you know, The Darke County Sheriff’s Patrol is a non-profit organization that receives no funding from county taxes, we are self supporting unit. We are an arm of The Darke County Sheriff’s Department, under the direction of Sheriff Toby Spencer. We contribute thousands of hours each year providing security for our many county schools, several villages, Eldora Speedway, The Great Darke County Fair, special events and festivals, along with assisting our Sheriff in providing law enforcement for this GREAT County that we live in. The Home and Sports Show is our biggest fundraiser along with our annual Chicken Bar B Que that assist to cover the annual expenses of our building, patrol cars, equipment, and training. Please remember to register for the many door prizes that have been donated by local businesses that we are selling at $1.00 a ticket, or 6 for $5.00. See a member of the Patrol, or stop by the table at the main entrance or kitchen to purchase your tickets, and a chance to Win some TERRIFIC PRIZES. A special THANK YOU to our exhibitors, advertisers and the county community for your continued support over these many years. We take pride in serving this GREAT COUNTY with the multitude of Law Enforcement and Security duties that we perform. We are grateful for your continued support of our organization. We hope to see you March 18, 19, 20th at our show.

Sincerely Deputy Scott Riffle / Administrator Darke County Sheriffs Patrol

Approximately 50 vendors will be at this year’s Home & Sports Show.

Organizers move show up a week due to holiday GREENVILLE – Are you thinking about a remodel project this year? Perhaps, it’s just a few improvements you need to make to your home. Maybe you would prefer getting away from your home for a while and travel. Or, you’re tired of winter and want to get out and spend an afternoon or evening discovering great entertainment. If you fall into any of those categories it is time to grab your car keys and head over to the Darke County Fairgrounds for the 54th annual Darke County Sheriff’s Patrol Home & Sports Show. This year’s event will be a week earlier this year due to the Easter holiday. Join the Darke County Sheriff’s Patrol on March 18-20 for food, fun and music. Best of all, admission is free (donations are welcomed at the door). The 2016 event features plenty of vendors. Approximately 50 vendors will feature everything from knick knacks for the home to major construction projects and new homes. There is also an assortment of vendors

for the sportsman that will display recreational vehicles, fishing, shooting and archery opportunities. After having a lot of success with the event in its inaugural year in 2015, the Winter National Kiddie Tractor Pull is returning. Bring the kids on Sunday, 1 p.m., to find out which kids have the muscle to pedal their way to a victory. There are different age groups for boys and girls. The Patrol has two concerts planned for this year’s event. On Friday night, St. Right will perform at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Higgins-Madewell will take the stage at 7: 30 p.m. The Darke County Home and Sport Show will kick off on Friday night at 6 p.m. with an opening ceremony that includes the Greenville High School NJROTC drill team presenting the colors, Dale Musser singing the National Anthem and opening comments from State Representative Jim Buchy, and Darke County Sheriff Department personnel.

Erin Higgins and Jeff Madewell are returning to the Darke County Sheriff’s Patrol Home & Sports Show for a concert on March 27.

Higgins-Madewell return to Home & Sport Show GREENVILLE – HigginsMadewell is a duo that delivers a unique blend of acoustic music, polished with each of their individual styles and influences. Erin Higgins and Jeff Madewell call the small village of Laura home, but the group that formed in late 2006 has performed well over 1,000 shows together and enjoys a loyal regional following. Their following continues to grow, as evident by the increase in the percentage of votes they have garnered in Active Dayton’s Best Local Rock Band survey. HigginsMadewell earned the award three consecutive years. Their roots in blues, country and classic rock can be heard in the powerful, yet melodic vocals of Higgins and the tastefully aggressive guitar work of Madewell. The music of Higgins-Madewell is a combination of strong vocals, acoustic guitar and heartfelt original lyrics that is difficult to classify as one specific genre. Their original music, for example, ranges from the country sound of “Like a Stone,” “Spider Bite,” which features a Delta Blues flavor and “Nothing Like You” with a soulful classic rock sound. Their music appeals to a broad range of people and their fan base spans from teens to retirees.

Both artists have dedicated their careers to music, have a broad background of musical experience and in bands that have previously opened for national acts like The Plain White T’s, Rick Derringer, Firehouse, The Tubes, XYZ, Shotgun Messiah, Baton Rouge, Lillian Axe, White Trash, Hurricane and Metal Church. Their influences include AC/ DC, Sheryl Crow, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Beth Hart. This may sound like a strange combination, but once you’ve seen them perform it makes perfect sense. Higgins-Madewell’s versatility, professionalism, dedication and genuine love for the audience is very apparent. Performing songs from their two self-released CDs and covering artists such as Janice Joplin, Johnny Cash, Pink Floyd and the Allman Brothers, you will leave a Higgins-Madewell show checking their schedule for their next performance. Find more information on Higgins-Madewell at www. higginsmadewell.com or on Facebook. Admission to the concert and the Sheriff’s Patrol Home & Sports Show is free. They will be performing at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 19.

Patrol relies on support from fundraisers GREENVILLE – The Darke County Sheriff’s Patrol is an extension of the Darke County Sheriff’s Department. All of its members are volunteers, but it differs from similar units around the state. Many of Ohio’s 88 counties have auxiliary units to compliment their department, but Darke County is one of the only counties to have a Patrol where its members are actual deputies with the same law enforcement power as the full-time deputies. Members of the Darke County Sheriff’s Patrol are required to

spend a certain amount of time each month patrolling Darke County’s roadways and answer calls. They also provide security at Eldora, Darke County Fair, high school sporting events and other festivals and events in the county. Sheriff Toby Spencer has stated his office would not have the manpower to provide the coverage it does without the men and women of the Sheriff’s Patrol. The Patrol receives no funding from county taxes. Members are responsible for raising funds for their building, patrol cars,

equipment and training. The Home and Sports Show is by far the organization’s biggest fundraiser. They also host an annual Chicken Bar B Que. Patrol members will be holding a raffle during this year’s show with prizes donated by local businesses. Tickets are $1 each or 22 for $20. Be sure to see a member of the Patrol or stop by the table at the main

entrance or kitchen to purchase your tickets and a chance to win. The grand prize is a Davy Crockett GMG Pellet Grill, Pellets, Sauces and Rubs from Classic Comfort of Greenville. The value is $650. There will also be great door prizes given away all weekend from KitchenAid, Bunch Roofing, Rural King, Wintrow Signs, Kathy’s Restaurant and more.

Members of the Darke County Sheriff’s Patrol volunteer a lot of time, but maintain their own equipment separate from the Sheriff’s Department, which requires them to ask the public for support.

Top home projects to help you save money It’s remodeling season, and with so many projects on the to-do list, which should you tackle first? While some projects provide great long-term return on investment, a few simple ones can provide instant savings. Here are the top home spring projects to help you save money: Caulk around windows and doors and stop air leaks around your home by sealing existing gaps and cracks. Use caulking or weather stripping around doors and windows. Installing a door

sweep is also a good idea. Insulate your home. Use insulation with a high R-value, which can be used to top up insulation in your attic. Aim for an R-value of 50 or a depth of 16 inches. For whole home efficiency, ensure other areas of your home, such as crawl spaces, basement headers, walls and ceilings, are well insulated. It will keep your house cool in the warm weather and take the stress off your air conditioning unit. Clean your AC unit. It’s

not uncommon to find an air conditioner’s condenser and compressor blocked up with dirt and debris. This can result in greater stress on the unit, causing it to work harder. Giving it a thorough cleaning is easy and can help maximize your AC unit’s service life while minimizing your energy bill. Plant trees. Direct sunlight can heat up surfaces and building materials, as well as the interior temperature of your home. Consider planting trees

in strategic locations to provide shade and reduce cooling costs. Install a rain barrel. Water is an important, but costly resource. Installing a rain barrel is an easy and affordable measure to reduce your water consumption, while keeping your lawn and garden looking great. These simple home maintenance tasks can be well worth the effort, potentially providing hundreds of dollars in annual savings.

Hiring a landscaper may be for you The majority of homeowners want their properties to appear as appealing as possible. While many homeowners want to be proud of their properties and come home to a welcoming home each night, the benefits to maintaining landscaping go beyond the notion that well-cared for lawns make for more comforting retreats. Because numerous variables, including landscaping, influence property values, it’s difficult to assess just how much the property values of homes with impressive landscapes are influenced by those very landscapes. Indeed, studies have produced varying results regarding the effect of well-landscaped homes on property values. But what many studies have shown and what many realtors indicate is that impressive landscaping adds a significant amount to property values, with estimates suggesting landscaping increases home values by anywhere from 5 to 20 percent. Such estimates are good news for homeowners, and they also highlight the stakes involved

when making landscaping decisions. Homeowners with green thumbs may embrace the challenge of revitalizing their lawns and gardens, but many, especially those pressed for time, can benefit greatly from working with professional landscapers. Why hire a professional landscaper? Maintaining a property requires more than just mowing the lawn every couple of weeks. Even homeowners committed to making their properties as pristine as possible can run into problems when adverse weather conditions pose a threat to lawns and gardens. The following are just a handful of reasons why homeowners may find working with landscaping professionals is the best thing for their properties and their bank accounts. Professionals understand the local climate. Experienced professional landscapers will understand the local climate and the challenges it presents to your lawn. Experience can prove invaluable as lawns battle adverse conditions that

threaten its survival. While homeowners going it alone may struggle through a trial and error period as they try to address problems threatening their lawns, experienced professionals are more likely to identify the problem immediately, providing a ready solution that can prevent potentially costly repairs down the road. Professionals can provide inspiration. In addition to maintaining properties, many landscaping professionals have vast experience improving properties through landscape design. Professional landscapers may have a host of ideas for your property that you would never think of. Homeowners with little to no lawn and garden experience may not realize all the things they can do with their properties, and those who go it alone may end up with unappealing landscapes that do not attract buyers’ attention when the home hits the market. Professionals typically have a wealth of ideas and, perhaps more importantly, they understand which ideas will and won’t work

on a given property. Professionals can remove some of the stress of managing landscaping projects. Homeowners know that home improvement projects, whether they are addressing home interiors or exteriors, can be stressful. Professional landscapers typically have a network of professionals, including contractors, who they have worked with in the past. Such connections can ensure more complex projects that require both landscapers and construction contractors go as smoothly as possible. In addition, homeowners who receive contractor recommendations from their experienced landscapers tend to rest easier knowing the people working on their properties have already developed a rapport and established a successful track record working together. Professional landscapers can be just what homeowners need to turn their properties into appealing oases no buyer can resist.

Terms novice anglers Ideas for creating an outdoor retreat may want to learn Fishing is a fun activity that many people consider a passion of theirs. Novice fishermen may have fun on their first fishing outing but come away confused by some of the terminology used. The following glossary of common fishing terms can help men and women as they further explore their newfound love of fishing. • Angling: Fishing using a hook and line. Anglers are people who fish, and types of angling include bait and fly fishing, casting and trolling. • Bait: The food or food substitute used to lure in fish. Insects, minnows and worms are some of the widely used types of bait. • Cast: To throw the hooked or baited end of a fishing line out into the water. • Catch and release: When anglers “catch and release” their fish, they unhook the fish they catch and return them back to the water before the fish dies. • Drifting: A type of fishing

where the angler allows his or her boat to drift. • Fly-fishing: A technique in which a lightweight rod known as a “fly rod” is used to cast live or imitation flies tied to a hook. • Gaff: A type of hook used to land a fish. • Jig: A lure that consists of a single hook with a lead weight molded around it. Jigs are often adorned with fur, feathers or a plastic body. • Lure: Artificial bait designed to resemble live bait. • Plug: A type of lure made of wood, plastic or rubber that is designed to resemble live bait, such as minnows or insects. • Rod: The pole of a fishing pole. Different types of rods are used for different types of fishing. • Sinker: A weight used to prevent lures from floating up in the water. Sinkers come in various shapes, types and weights. • Spinner: A lure made with a rotating blade on a wire shaft.

This year, transform your outdoor area into a family retreat with an “out-of-thebox” vision, careful planning and the appropriate tools. First, gather your family together for a brainstorming session and target what you want to do in your outdoor haven. Next, make a todo list of the projects required to make your vision a reality. Finally, round up the tools and supplies you need and get to work! Decks, patios and porches, both open and enclosed, invite people to gather for a meal, share

conversation or play games. Whether you’re on the deck or on the lawn, comfortable furniture will enhance your outdoor living experience. Choices can include Adirondack chairs, swings, garden benches, rockers, picnic tables and benches, arbors and much more. Wooden playground equipment, game courts, garden benches, arbors, gates and trellises organize your outdoor living area for fastpaced play and quiet relaxation. Ensure a long life for your outdoor wood projects a quality wood protector.

Did you know? The home improvement market, which includes both improvements and maintenance, has rebounded considerably from its most recent low point in 2011. The Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS) of Harvard University indicated in early 2015 that the upcoming year would surpass the $324 billion spent on improvements during the peak of the housing boom a decade ago. Even though homebuilding and the home industry in general is still not at complete recovery, trends within the home improvement industry do suggest that homeowners have once again become comfortable investing in their homes.
