The team consists of community members working together to assist families with a variety of needs. “Community prevention programs and activities have been proven to strengthen families by aiding in safe and healthy environments for our youth,” O’Conner said. “Prevention is key and we, as a community hope that bringing attention to the issue will urge all community members to be more aware and report concerns related to the safety and

win asked to revote on the original motion. A seldom used rule allows a person on the prevailing side of the original vote to ask to reconsider the motion – if done so by the end of the meeting. On the second vote of the committee report, the motion failed 6-0. Councilman John Hensley said new information came to light after the committee’s report was submitted. During the public hearing portion of the council meeting, Greenville Township Trustee Justin Hines said the township trustees would approve the annexation process for the property if Surber would submit an application. The property on Sater Street is surrounded by the city limits. “There was the ques-

tion of annexation taking so long,” Hensley said. “That’s why we have a couple representatives from the township – because they’re willing to expedite the annexation. Therefore, there is no necessity to grant this request.” Hensley brought up the issue with the Erwin Brothers. “We refused theirs,” he said. “How can we now grant this for this property owner?” The Erwin Brothers rejected the city’s demands in the pre-annexation agreement and chose to seek a different avenue to get services, which included a well and septic system.

DARKE COUNTY – The public will have the opportunity to learn firsthand why drug addicts make the choices they do – and what is being done to combat the local drug problem. The Darke County Republican Women’s Club will host Addiction – Everyone’s Enemy at 7 p.m. Monday, April 8, at the Lighthouse Christian Center on Sebring-Warner Road. The event is open to the public. “The audience will be taken through an addict’s personal journey, then on to how addiction is impacting and being dealt with locally by law enforcement and the court system,” said Lyn Bliss.

GREENVILLE – An upgrade to the city’s South Park has been batted around for a few years, but that idea may soon become a reality thanks to a grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and a donation from the Wayne Hospital Foundation. The kiddie pool at the park was closed several years ago, but in the summer of 2020 kids in the neighborhood may have a place to go cool off and enjoy the water. On Tuesday, Safety Service Director Curt Garrison told Greenville City Council the city was approved for a $273,769 land and water conservation grant from ODNR for the installation

of a splash pad at the park. The Wayne Hospital Foundation has agreed to provide $225,000 toward the project, and the city will be responsible for $50,000. In addition to the splash pad, the city would make several upgrades to the park. Garrison said the city also would renovate the former recreation building and add new restrooms. The old restrooms would be used as the control room for the splash pad. The city also would add a parking lot. Council provided some confusion during its meeting when it approved a Utilities Committee report by a 4-2 vote, offering city water and sewer to a property outside the city limits owned by Geoff Surber. Greenville Police Beat - Man cited for drug possession in the Lowe’s parking lot Drugs On March 29 an officer was dispatched to Lowes on Wagner Avenue in reference to a suspicious vehicle and possible drug use. The officer found the described vehicle sitting in the Lowes parking lot with the driver’s door open. A male was sleeping in the driver’s seat and a female was sleeping in the passenger seat. Another officer arrived on scene to assist. Officers yelled and whistled for the driver to get his attention and he slowly lifted his head up. It appeared as if he was under the influence. While he was speaking, officers could see his pupils were pinpoint and his speech was slurred, and he was very hard to understand. When asked what he was doing at Lowes and if he was alright, he stated he was waiting for a friend to drop something off. The male was identified as Forest Guffey of Muncie, Ind. The passenger also was from Muncie, Ind. She told officers they were waiting to meet someone to pick up her clothes and she thought they were in Winchester, Ind. Officers asked Guffey if either of them were drug

users and he denied using drugs. When asked if either had been in any trouble, Guffey said he received a cultivation charge in 2009, but nothing since. Officers asked Guffey if there was anything in the vehicle that shouldn’t be there and he said “no.” When asked if officers could search the vehicle, Guffey replied with “I’d rather you didn’t because it’s my cousin’s car.” He was advised that since he was in control of the vehicle he could give consent and he again refused. The female passenger agreed to be searched if she would be allowed to use the bathroom afterward. While the female passenger was being searched, Guffey ran from the vehicle. Officers yelled for him to stop and ran after the defendant, quickly catching up with him. Guffey was handcuffed and escorted back to the car. During a search of Guffey, officers located marijuana, a brown powder substance suspected to be heroin, a black square of substance suspected to be fentanyl, two bottles of liquid morphine and three vials of liquid THC. All illicit items were transport-

ed to the police department to be placed into property. The suspected heroin, fentanyl and morphine will be sent to BCI for analysis. Guffey was placed under arrest and transported to the Darke County Jail, where he was incarcerated for obstructing official business, possession of drugs, and held with no bond. While at the jail, Guffey told officers the bottles did contained liquid morphine, which he had used and was under the influence. Guffey also said the brown powder was heroin and the other black substance was supposed to be fentanyl but he may have got “ripped off.” Suspicious Person On April 2 an officer was dispatched to Fifth Third Bank, 225 East Main St., on the report of possible consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle. The officer arrived and found a vehicle parked in the parking lot with the defendant, Tammy Newman sitting in the front passenger’s seat. The officer approached the vehicle and saw the defendant with an open can of beer sitting in the cup holder next to her. Newman admitted it

Wanted Person On April 2 an officer was called to the 400 block of East Fourth Street in reference to a welfare check. The officer was knocking on the door and observed Jamin Brenner walk around the corner from behind the house. He gave the officer his name and said he had a warrant for failure to appear on a no driver’s license charge. Dispatch confirmed the warrant through LEADS/ NCIC from the Greenville Police Department, with a bond of $525. The officer transported Brenner to the Darke County Jail, where he was released to the corrections staff. On March 29 an officer was informed by dispatch that a 16-year-old juvenile, who had an active warrant through juvenile probation, was possibly at a residence in the 300 block of East Third Street. A second unit was requested. When

officers arrived, one went to the back door of the residence, while the other went to the front door and made contact with a resident who said the juvenile was inside the home. Officers located the juvenile in an upstairs bedroom. The juvenile admitted he knew officers were attempting to locate him. He was placed in handcuffs and searched for contraband after the warrant was confirmed. The juvenile was transported to the Greenville Police Department, where he was later picked up by a juvenile probation officer who transported him to West Central Juvenile Detention Center in Troy.

running westbound on East Main Street. Once in the area, officers observed him running through a yard. One of the officers pursued the child on foot through a yard, where he jumped a fence. A couple minutes later a man waived the officer over in the 700 block of East Main Street, where he was holding the child in place. The officer escorted the child to the police cruiser and transported him back to his uncle’s residence on East Third Street. The child was issued a citation for being unruly.

is impacting health care and the resources are being offered for treatment. “And to wrap it up, our government representatives will present information about what the government is doing to combat the problem of addiction on the state and national levels,” Bliss said. The round table will feature several local and regional experts, including Tia Moretti, deputy director for RecoveryOhio, Gov. Mike DeWine’s initiative to combat Ohio’s drug and mental health crisis. “RecoveryOhio is honored to be a part of the positive actions members of the Darke County Republican Women’s Club are undertaking to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and offer support to those with mental illness and substance use disorders and their families,” Moretti said. A licensed social worker and Ohio certified prevention consultant, Moretti has 15 years of experience working with individuals who are addicted to drugs as well as those living with mental illness. She has worked not only with adults dealing with these issues, but also with their children and how their parents’ decisions impact their young lives. Moretti also worked as an administrator with

Columbus Public Health and assisted with setting up a needle exchange program and Saboxone availability for drug addicts. She worked for DeWine in the attorney general’s office as the Director of Social Services and Substance Abuse. Moretti said during the past five years, one of the biggest changes she’s seen has been in the form of the reduction of the stigma of drug abuse. “Families aren’t hiding like they used to,” she said of those dealing with addicted or mentally ill family members. “This wouldn’t have been 10 years ago.” Moretti cites recent changes in leadership for drawing attention to the drug crisis affecting Ohioans “telling families this is a safe thing to talk about.” Moretti also commended the efforts of the Coalition for a Healthy Darke County, especially for its dedication to providing drug prevention education in the county’s schools. Other Addiction- Everyone’s Enemy round table participants will include Congressman Warren Davidson, Montgomery County Coroner Kent Harshbarger, Darke County Common Pleas Court Judge Jonathan P. Hein, Darke County Juvenile Judge Jason Aslinger, Darke County Prosecutor Kelly Ormsby, Darke County Chief Deputy and member of the sheriff’s drug task force Mark Whittaker, and recovering addict Clinton Randall.

Arcanum High School Class of 1969 will host raffle ARCANUM – The Arcanum High School Class of 1969 will soon celebrate its 50th reunion and will host a raffle.

Paulette (McGriff) Zawosky (1951-2003) was a well-known Darke County artist, photographer and quilter. Sonny

Custer and Eva Lou (Kuhn) Custer, classmates of Zawosky, have donated a painting for a raffle. Proceed will be given for an

art scholarship. The oil on canvas currently is on display at Montage in Greenville where tickets may be purchased for $5 for one or $10 for three. It then will be exhibited on April 12 at the 50th class reunion. Finally it will travel to the Trojan Alumni Homecoming on April 13 where the winning ticket will be drawn. As a child, Zawosky always had a crayon and paper in hand and loved drawing. Being behind the lens of a camera was very fascinating for her as she would capture historical buildings that some day would be gone.

Her pen and ink drawings highlight many of Darke County’s activities and locations. Many of her

Triangle welcomes Latter & friends for reunion By Clinton Randall For AIM Media

GREENVILLE – A night of live rock music returns to the Triangle in Greenville on April 13 for the third annual Rock Reunion. This year, local band Latter will share the stage with some special guests, including the bands 2×2 and Tragic Schoolbus; along with friends Scott Foreman (Ax-Sent lead singer), Dave “Rock-N-Roll” Brown (guitarist for Prankster and formerly of Tantrum), Fred Seipel, Fred Dakin and Rick Mathis. More may be added before the night of the show. “We’re very happy to co-host this show every year,” Latter guitarist and lifelong Greenville resident Quintin Fyffe said. “It’s a show we (Latter) are going to continue to do every year to celebrate the history of musicians that’s played there…it’s a historical place!” Since it began, the event has grown…and this year’s show is expected to draw an even bigger crowd.

Latter band members are ready to rock the Triangle on April 13.

“It is great to see this rock night getting bigger each year,” said Triangle owner Kelly Wilson. “There is a lot of rock history here and it just makes sense to keep it going.” The Triangle is Darke County’s oldest night club. A fact not too many people know is that the legendary artist Johnny Cash took the stage back in 1958, according to Wilson. For all the country music fans, the Triangle will hold

its annual country music reunion this Saturday, April 6. Doors open for the country reunion at 8:30 p.m. and at approximately 6:30 p.m. for those ready to rock the night away on April 13. “We look forward to seeing everyone come out for a great night of music and fun,” Wilson concluded. Readers Write Green for Law Director To Whom It May Concern, I am writing a letter of recommendation for Jesse Green, whom I believe would make a great fulltime Greenville City Law Director. He is a person with positive values, characteristics, honesty and work ethics, all of which I believe are things that any elected official should have. The hard work and dedication he has currently shown as assistant prosecuting attorney will translate well to this new position. I have personally known

Jesse for many years through our church family, and know he will exceed our expectations within this new job. His unwavering commitment to Greenville and his small town values will also be an asset. His communication skills and positive personality will enhance his natural leadership qualities. With this sincere recommendation, I hope that you will strongly consider Jesse Green for the new Greenville City Law Director position. Amanda Hines, Greenville

Green’s Care and Concern Editor, We are writing this in support of Jesse Green as law director for the city of Greenville. We’ve known Jesse for over 20 years and witnessed his dedication and caring concern for all he did. Educated and trained as an attorney he retired as a Lt. Colonel in our Ohio National Guard after 34 years while working 25 years in the Darke County’s Prosecuting Attorney’s office. All this aside, we saw his compassionate and care and support exhibited during the time his family walked along side their young daughter’s journey with cancer. Her kindergarten teacher and the family scheduled times for church family members to assist with home care during the workday. That opportunity gave a clear picture how a father lifted on little girl’s world

every noon hour when he came home to share lunch. Laughter and love abounded! Before her final days, the Sunshine 4K was launched looking to the future of her classmates she loved and missed so much. Scholarships were established for those eligible at graduation and the Sunshine 4K continues today as a community effort that contributed to better our citizens. Greenville needs a law director with broad legal knowledge, wide perspective and compassion to fill this position with a grasp of what the future will offer. Commitment and life experiences have equipped Jesse and his desire to make the law director a full-time effort gives credence to your support. Don and Louise Lucas, Greenville

Worch helps with community recycling VERSAILLES – Worch Memorial Public Library recently announced it is helping with a variety of the community’s recycling needs, ranging from household batteries to garden plants. The library continuously helps with the recycling needs by collecting household batteries and bottle tops. The batteries are collected to be recycled and the Versailles Garden Club collects the bottle tops for benches. Two benches have been donated to the library since this program has been implemented. The library is also hosting an e-waste recycling program throughout the month of April. Some of the items accepted for recycling are printers, computer hard drives, tablets, cell phones and mp3 players. The library will not be accepting televisions or monitors. Throughout May the

library is hosting a Community Plant Exchange. Bring in your excess plants or clippings and let someone else take them home. Come in and see if the plant you need is available. When donating plants, please mark them with as much information as possible, include type of plant, light requirements and a short description of overall appearance. Come out to the library to help with the community recycling and to see the benches donated to the library by the Versailles Garden Club. One is located in front of the library and the other is located in the Phyllis Shivley Memorial Garden, created by the Friends of the Library, on the side of the library. For more information on these recycling programs or anything else at the library visit www. worch.lib.oh.us or call 526-3416.

Readers Write Reader hopeful for NextGen Dear Editor: As a Darke County resident who works in IT at a firm (that employs many Millennials) in Dayton, I can tell you for free why Millennials are fleeing Darke County. Millennials, as a whole, are typically college educated and prefer to spend their money on experiences rather than material objects. They are well connected to the internet via Wi-FI (a must). They are fickle and are trend followers & trend setters. They prefer to live in “hip” neighborhoods near bars and restaurants where other people like them frequent. Much like the revitalized area in downtown Dayton near Fifth Third Field.

Not Your Typical Politician I am sending this letter to support Mike Rieman in his pursuit of becoming the Greenville Law Director. Mike was hired by my firm, Bieser, Greer & Landis, back in October of 2015. During his three years here, I personally headed up formal evaluations of Mike and the other Associate Attorneys at the firm. Mike

Miami County is considered rural and agricultural as well but it has much more to offer than Darke County. Better shopping, better restaurants, and better access to more experiences. I have enjoyed growing up and living in Darke County as it is a fairly safe place to live and raise a family. I would not want to live in Dayton but I, like many others, must commute to Dayton to find any job or career that is satisfying/exciting and pays well enough to support a family. I would love to live closer to my place of work but I’ve never had that opportunity. Hopefully, the OSU study will reveal some opportunities for improvement that Darke County can implement to improve this area for everyone. Doug Burns Arcanum

Reid’s Medical Monday set RICHMOND, Ind. – The April Medical Monday event features Reid Health’s Injury Prevention Coordinator Jacob Cox, who will discuss and train attendees in a program aimed at saving lives in emergencies. Cox, RN, with EMS and Trauma Services at Reid Health, has shared the program with staff in area schools and state officials at the Indiana legislature, among other groups. The program is designed to save lives by helping people learn how to quickly stop life-threatening bleeding. With a serious injury, a person can bleed to death in less than five minutes — often before trained emergency help can arrive. Cox notes studies have shown that 30 to 40 percent of the victims in mass casualty events died from rapid blood loss. Medical Monday is a free presentation and will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, April 8, at Central United Methodist Church. To attend, please RSVP Sharrie Harlin at (765) 983-3000, ext. 4676. VERSAILLES – Jodie (Richard) Bohman of Versailles recently published her second novel, “Mattie,” a sequel to her first novel, “And I Believe.” “It picks up 19 years later where ‘And I Believe’ left off,’” said Bohman, secretary to the superintendent of Versailles Exempted Village Schools. The author said the whole process of writing the second book beginning to end, writing it to publishing, took her 4 1/2 years. “I had the story written in about two years,” she said. “After that, I asked four friends to read it for their opinions and suggestions. Once I made their edits and had the storyline where I wanted, I had it edited by an editor. I still found typos and punctuation errors, so I asked Amy Hoying, an English teacher, to read it along with three of my friends – Beth Simons, Kelly Voisard, and Vicki Cost. Once I corrected the typos they found, I was ready to publish it.” With “And I Believe,” Bohman went with Gypsy Publications, a small family-owned publishing company in Troy. “With ‘Mattie,’ I used Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), which is through Amazon,” she went on. “I would suggest this for anybody wanting to publish a book. The only money you have invested is in the books you purchase yourself to sell.

They also assign your ISBN number (basically a Social Security number for the book) and at no charge. You do all of the work, but you have complete control over everything, and they make the publishing process very easy.” “Mattie” will not be her last novel. “I am making this into a series and writing a third book called ‘Bottle Full of Demons,’” she said. When does she believe her next novel will be finished? “I am horrible with deadlines, so I don’t want to give an estimated release date because I will never have it done by then,” Bohman said. “I have a small start on ‘Bottle Full of Demons,’ but I am giving my brain a small break from all of the proofing and editing I did with ‘Mattie,’” she said. For more information or to purchase signed paperbacks of both books, visit jodierichardbohman.com. Paperbacks and Kindle versions are available to purchase on Amazon, and paperbacks are also at Worch, Russia and Coldwater libraries. Read more about Jodie Bohman at www.earlybirdpaper.com.

DC Humane Society prepares for annual auction GREENVILLE – When you think of the Darke County Humane Society (DCHS), you may only think of their shelter on State Route 49 just outside of Greenville, which is a very important part of what they do. Ninety percent of the 325 animals the shelter cared for in 2017 were pet rescues, but rescuing and adopting dogs and cats to loving homes isn’t the only important part of their mission. DCHS helps keeps animals safe through enforcement authority as well as providing shot clinics and administering the Trap Neuter Release

(TNR) program among many other duties. In order to continue serving local residents, DCHS holds several fundraisers throughout the year. Their biggest fundraiser is the annual Live & Silent Auction. This year’s event will be held April 13 at Paws Bingo Hall, 848 Martin St., Greenville. An optional dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. with doors opening at 5 p.m. and the auction begins at 6:30 p.m. The dinner is $10 per person, but admission to the auction is free. Judy Francis, DCHS President, explained this year auction marks the 12th year for the event.

She was excited to report it continues to grow. Some of the items that will be up for auction include gift certificates, home décor and furniture, smoker, OSU memorabilia, and a variety of themed baskets. Two baskets in particular will be of interest to children. DCHS has compiled two gigantic Easter baskets filled with toys that any child would love. Proceeds from this event will not only support DCHS’ day-to-day operations. Funds from past auctions have helped remodel the animal shelter and provide matching funds for the Trap,

Neuter, Release (TNR) program. 2019 will the City of Greenville’s second year to participate in this program. Francis was quick to point out the TNR program is making a difference in the city where they know there is a problem. However, DCHS can’t help if they don’t know where the problem areas are and she encourages residents to call and let them know if they see an abundance of stray and feral cats. For more information on DCHS or the auction/dinner, visit www. pawsbingohall.com or call (937) 548-7299.

On July 11, 2019, Stelvideo Grange will hold its Award & Deaf (Dogs for Better Living) Picnic in the Park at Greenville City Park. They introduce the community to the Grange and show off the many ways their members have been heroes to the community and their neighbors for over 152 years. The National Grange was founded in 1867 and Stelvideo Grange was founded in 1873. Guest speakers, which will include the State Deaf Director, will talk about the State Deaf Program and how they are involved in Dogs for Better Living. “We’ve had many wonderful experiences growing up in Grange,” said Dean Burk and Sheri Baker. Burk has been a member for 57 years and Burk has been a member for 46 years. “And we remember our grandparents stating the importance of Grange when we were younger. Our grandparents were instrumental in organizing Stelvideo Grange #295 in 1873.” National Grange President Betsy Huber said events like Stelvideo Grange’s are

Lease-Fritz has display at library GREENVILLE – During the month of April, the Greenville Public Library will be offering a brief display of the writings and events and genealogy booklets from Marilyn J. LeaseFritz, inside the glass case, of the second floor. The family picture book shows Virgil Eugene Fritz, Marilyn’s husband, standing behind the large stone of his great great great grandfather, connected with many pioneer families within the Darke County area. The “Growing-Up in Pitsburg” booklet has received numerous requests, however the addition of Virgil’s

late brother Robert Fritz who served in Vietnam is going to be included. A few to mention, consists of her “Mother’s Traditions” also the postcard booklet of her late son, John E. Lease, and “Remembering Little Bob, Marilyn’s nephew, and historical clippings of “School Days” plus the Friendship Booklets,” of Marilyn and Kay. In 2017, Marilyn was curator and activity director of the Historical Heritage Hall of New Madison and through the Friends of the New Madison Public Library sponsored the 50th meeting of the Douglas

Eugene Dickey, USMC “Ultimate Sacrifice” presentation within the former K of P Hall. That booklet consists of letters from Tom C. McKenney, Lt. Col. USMC (retired) and pictures and minutes of the entire meeting. The large gold booklet contains clippings from their two sons’ military years of Iraq, Kuwait and Somalia, Bosnia and Afghanistan. Marilyn’s connection with libraries seems to have been a given and would like to thank the Greenville Public Library, along with the New Madison Public

The Greater Greenville Ministerial Association is sponsoring Good Friday services on April 19, 2019, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. We will follow Christ as he made his way to the Cross down the Via Dolorosa beginning with the first station where he was condemned to die. Join us as we walk and pray the steps that Jesus took to Calvary. We begin our journey at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and will end at St. Paul Lutheran Church. You are welcome to join us at any stop along the journey. Please note the various locations and times of each station are approximate. God has done so much for us as God poured His love and grace upon us through Jesus Christ, His Son, at the Cross. Begin your Easter holiday weekend with an experience you won’t forget.

The Trustees are asking families and loved ones to remove any decorations that they wish to save by April 7. The trustees will begin removing old arrangements and decorations that are not in vases attached to the monuments or saddle type arrangements beginning April 7. This cleanup is necessary to properly maintain the grounds. Greenville Middle School students share their Natural High GREENVILLE - In December and January, as part of continuing to teach students to make positive choices, students at Greenville Middle School grades 5-8 explored the website naturalhigh.org, watching stories that help motivate students to find their own natural high rather than turning to drugs or alcohol. The website does a great job showing a variety of different aspects for natural highs -surfing, singing, football, family, friends, author, designer, etc. Greenville Middle School students were given the opportunity to share their Natural Highs through a contest. This in part is a contributor to significant increases in depression, anxiety, and causes of death categorized as ‘deaths of despair.’ It’s important to find ways to live a meaningful, satisfying life.
