Matthew West headlines 10th annual Illumination Festival GREENVILLE – The festival that has brought the top contemporary Christian artists in the world of music is celebrating a milestone this year. 2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the Illumination Festival that has featured groups and artists like MercyMe, Toby Mac, Newboys, Jeremy Camp, Fireflight, Sanctus Real, Britt Nicole, Tenth Avenue North, and a host of others. In the fall of 2006, a small group of individuals met for the first time to discuss the possibility of bringing a Christian music event to the Darke County Fairgrounds. Those dreams turned into reality in September 2007 with the first note was played from a small stage in front of a few hundred people that filled the track and seats in the Grandstand at the Darke County Fairgrounds. The committee learned a lot from that first concert and realized it would take the community’s support to continue bringing in the best of the best. The first lineup was incredible for a group of persons not com-

pletely understanding what they were doing. Festival goers danced to music from Everyday Sunday, saw and heard a high energy show from Tate and worshipped with Big Daddy Weave. Wanting to make the 10th anniversary show the best, the Illumination Ministries Festival Committee has again secured one of the top artists in contemporary Christian music to headline the 2016 show. Four-time GRAMMY® winner Matthew West will be coming to the Darke County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Sept. 17. West is also a multipleASCAP Christian Music

self-titled debut album release. She entered the Top 10 on Billboard’s Christian Albums chart, while the debut single, “Who I Am,” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Christian Hot AC/CHR chart. Bear’s Mill named ‘Standout in Tourism’ site SUSAN HARTLEY

STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com

DARKE COUNTY – Darke County’s Bear’s Mill has been recognized with a “Standout in Tourism” award by OhioTraveler.com for its April edition. According to Frank Satullo, who manages OhioTraveler.com travel website, which focuses exclusively on travel and tourism in the state of Ohio, “Bear’s Mill is to the art community what flour is to baking.” The working mill offers a number of flours milled on site, including spelt, cornmeal and a variety of wheat flours. The Mill Store also sells buckwheat, steel cut oats and steel cut grits. “We’re proud of the 167 years of the mill’s working history as a provider of whole grains and as a service to area farmers,” said executive director Marti Goetz, also noting the varied art works showcased in the mill’s gallery. Not only does the mill offer a variety of grains, locally baked goods, and culinary gift items, it’s also becoming well known for the art gallery, which includes paintings, pottery and artist-inspired jewelry collections. “Bear’s Mill is one of the most visited attractions in Darke County,” said Matthew Staugler, executive director of the Darke County Visitors Bureau. “The historical significance of Bear’s Mill is incredible, and the cultural contributions of Bear’s Mill, from their everchanging gallery space to events like ‘Soup ‘n Bowl’ shine a bright light on the

arts in our area.” Bear’s Mill is the only working grist mill in southwest Ohio, said Goetz, who has been busy working to plan a conference for the Society of the Preservation of Old Mille (SPROOM) which will be held Oct. 2023. “Bear’s Mill is the host,” Goetz said. Known as Art at the Mill, an unofficial kickoff to spring in Darke County will be the mill’s Spring Open House, set for April 30 and May 1. And through May 8, the gallery will feature “Spring’s Glorious Hues,” featuring oil and watercolor floral paintings by Donna Pierce Clark and glass art – vases, hummingbird feeders, bowls – by Jack Pines. The variety of galley exhibits and rich history of Bear’s Mill is what attracts its thousands of visitors each year, Goetz said. “Tourism is a large part of how we share history of our mill,” she explained. Visitors come in many forms – school field trips, families, garden groups, even bikers who make the mill a destination spot. Following a scheduled tour, visitors can enjoy cornbread cookies made from cornmeal ground at the mill. The four-story mill sits on 35 acres along Greenville Creek on Bear’s Mill-Arcanum Road, east of Greenville. It was built in 1849, by Gabriel Baer who came to this area from Lancaster, Pa. Baer first built a saw mill in order to make hand-hewn logs for the mill’s construction. About 10 years ago, Goetz said, walnut siding was installed over the exist-

ing structure for preservation. Those who visit the mill also can enjoy a short hike along a trail that follows the Greenville Creek to a Vietnam Memorial, built by former owners and Vietnam veteran Terry and his wife Julie Clark. The Clarks owned the mill 35 years, Goetz said, before the nonprofit Friends of Bear’s Mill purchased it in 2013. The Clarks are still active with the mill, with Terry as the master miller and Julie displaying her pottery as part of the Millrace Potters Collective, a group which also includes Dionne Mayhew, Rita Wiley and Loretta Wray. Next to the Vietnam Memorial is a fire pit and wood shelter, built by Drew Martin for his Eagle Scout project. In addition to “Spring’s Glorious Hues,” there will be five additional Art at the Mill events during 2016, including “On and Off the Wall” from May 13-June 26; “Metal and Glass – Patterns from the Earth,” set for July 1-Aug. 14; “Cutting Edge Hoosier Creativity,” from Aug. 19-Oct. 2; “Time for Tea and Fantasy” set for Oct. 7-Nov. 5; and “Seen and Unthrown,” from Nov. 18 through Dec. 31. Opening receptions are held on opening day from 6-9 p.m. with Gallery Talks by artists at 7 p.m. with an exception in July, when the reception will be held July 8. And in October, the Mill’s annual Fall Open House will be held Oct. 1 and 2. For more information about Bear’s Mill and its 2016 event schedule, check out www.bearsmill.com.

The Merchant House opening worth the wait RYAN BERRY

MANAGING EDITOR editor@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – The owners of The Merchant House, 406 S. Broadway, Greenville, have heard every imaginable form of the question, “When are you going to open?” They are finally able to answer with a resounding “We are open for business.” As they continue to work out the kinks, The Merchant House will be open on a limited schedule the first couple of weeks. Chris Campbell and his fiancé, Cassie Lambright, are part-owners and will manage the new restaurant. Both have a long history of working in the restaurant business and both have been involved with opening several corporate restaurants. Getting it right was important to the family-owners. Chris pointed out coowners Randy and George (Georgianne) Lambright were very supportive. “They were always, ‘Do what you need. That sounds great. Make it happen.’ They never said no.” The construction of the building and the development of the menu worked hand-in-hand over the past few months. Knowing they wanted to include Detroit

style pizza on the menu forced them to deconstruct part of the loft in order to accommodate the pizza oven. For some of the other possibilities, if the kitchen couldn’t create a menu item properly the item was dropped. Chris said they didn’t want to give customers an inferior product. While barbecue and pizza will most likely be The Merchant House staples, Chris and Cassie agree there is a much more on the menu that people will be coming back to enjoy. From seafood jambalaya to chicken and waffles to Cajun style food and more, patrons will find something they will enjoy. Cassie encouraged everyone to try the maple bacon cornbread. Not only is the décor of The Merchant House a huge reflection of Greenville’s history, much of Greenville and Darke County’s flavor can be found in the food. The restaurant is getting its meat from Winner’s Meat, the cornmeal is coming from Bear’s Mill and buns are being produced by Janet’s Bakery. The bar will feature beers from throughout Ohio, including several from a brewery in Maria Stein. They are also in talks with a local poultry producer. The Merchant House has made a concerted effort to

purchase from local vendors as much as possible. While Chris and Cassie have been involved with restaurants that receive hundreds of applications for employment, they believe they have found the best staff they have ever assembled. Cassie said, “They are our number one champions.” She explained they are telling everyone about The Merchant House and are building excitement around its opening. An emphasis has been put on service because the owners understand the food can be outstanding, but customer service will keep customers coming back. Cassie added the staff has been trained on the history of the building and architecture and are ready for all questions. Beginning April 12, the restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner. They will be open until 3 p.m. on April 18, but will close following the business’ ribbon cutting. The following day will start a new chapter in The Merchant House’s history. They will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Reservations are currently being accepted. To reserve your table, call 459-4405, or email reservations@tmhgreenville.com.

Nine treated following chemical spill at Ansonia High School BY CLINTON RANDALL STAFF WRITER crandall@earlybirdpaper.com

ANSONIA – Seven Ansonia High School students and two school staff members were treated at area hospitals following a pesticide chemical spill in a vocational agricultural shop classroom Tuesday afternoon. Emergency personnel responded to the school just before 1:30 p.m. after reports of students complaining of feeling sick following the spill. According to authorities, the amount spilled was less than 10 ounces and is said to have occurred when a student dropped a container that held the fruit tree pesticide spray. The smell reportedly spread quickly throughout the school building with 15-20 people complaining of feeling either dizzy, sick or breathing issues. According to Superintendent Jim Atchley, the Ansonia school nurse set up an initial triage for those feeling effects from the pesticide fumes. Once emergency medical personal arrived on scene, the individuals were evaluated before it was decided who should be transported to the hospital. The school district issued several onecall reports to update parents, staff and community of the situation and condition of those transported to the hospital. Members of the Ansonia and Rossburg fire departments were at the school until after 6 p.m. working to ensure the air inside the building was properly ventilated so students and fac-

ulty could safely return to class on Wednesday. The Greenville Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team was contacted in regards to proper procedures of cleaning the chemical. “I just want to thank all the fire and rescue crews on the speedy response and handling of the incident,” Atchley told The Early Bird. “Our staff and

students pulled together and did a great job of keeping everything under control!” Rescue squads from Ansonia, Rossburg, Union City and Versailles transported the nine students and staff to either Wayne HealthCare or Coldwater. All were treated and released as of Tuesday evening, according to Atchley.

PERI inducts officers; discusses insurance issues BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – The Darke County Chapter of the Public Employee Retirees Inc. met April 4 at the Greenville VFW for their regular bi-monthly luncheon and meeting. After inducting officers for 2016, the group conducted a brief discussion on insurance issues and heard a presentation by John Vehre, director of the Greenville Public Library. Inducted as 2016 officers were Ann Vehre, president; Ruth Dailey, vice-president; Tony Walters, secretary; Shirley Norris, treasurer; and Vivian Nieport, attendance and contact chairman. Ann Vehre reminded the group the Consolidated Appropriations Act, also known as the Cadillac Tax, introduced by Congress, is not going away, but has been delayed. “It’s something we need to be concerned about,” Vehre said. The tax, which will assess health care providers when their coverage value exceeds certain thresholds, has been delayed until 2020. “OPERS (Ohio Pubic Retirees Retirement System) and PERI are working closely together,” Vehre said. “This will cost OPERS millions of dollars per year, which would directly impact all of us” with a rise in insurance costs. OPERS is the state agency that administers public retirees’ pension funds and healthcare benefits. PERI is the retiree public action association, dedicated to keeping its members on top of political activity that would affect pensions and healthcare. Vehre challenged the group of retirees “to be supportive of keeping the chapter together” in Darke County, which she explained had the largest number of retirees per capita than any other Ohio county. “Some PERI chapters are going out of business,” Vehre said, due to the lack of support “This gives us tremendous power. We have power because you are the majority in this county,” Vehre said, also encouraging the seniors to be sure to vote in the upcoming election. “Don’t be discouraged because you are a little bit older. Be aware

of changing rules.” Vehre’s son, John, gave a brief presentation on the services offered to senior citizens at Greenville Public Library, specifically the free basic computer classes offered periodically. Vehre said the classes truly start with the basics - from turning a computer on and off to how to download specific applications. The computer classes also will instruct attendees on how to access the internet via other devices, such as their cell phone or I-Pad. “But the library is more than computer classes and books, it’s a social place to hang out,” Vehre said. “It’s definitely not a tomb. The days of “shh-ing” someone is over. It’s not super quiet times like there were in the past.” The library currently has 18 computers available for public use. Marriage is Worth the Work Ryan’s World by Ryan Berry Managing Editor bluebagmedia.com

It’s hard to RYANbelieve BERRY I MANAGING have nearly 20 years of EDITOR marriage under my belt. Even more incredible is that all of those years have been with the same woman. I’m scratching my head on that one, too. After featuring my wife and two daughters in this column for the past four or five years it seems I get the same question over and over, “How do you stay married?” I was taken aback by the question the first time it was posed. What do you mean, how do I stay married? Husbands began telling me, “If I would say the things you say about your wife I would be in the dog house.” As those comments began to pile up I began to realize how special my

COLUMBUS – State Representative Jim Buchy (R- Greenville) has sent a letter to the Ohio Department of Education requesting they allow additional opportunities for school administrators to opt for paper testing this year. The results of last year’s PARCC examinations were delayed significantly due to questionable data collection and unsatisfactory results. These delayed results then pushed back the release date of Ohio’s School Report Cards for the 2014-15 school year. Upon the release of the school report cards, part one on Jan. 14 and part two on Feb. 25 of this year, a trend emerged. Students who took the paper version of the PARCC exam had significantly better results than those who took the on-

riage was going to be easy. Nobody ever said raising children was going to be easy. There are times you are going to be mad at each other. There may even be times when you storm out through the front door vowing to never come back again. Then you realize you don’t have much gas in the tank, your wallet is still in the house, payday is still a week away and walking to Florida to live like a homeless person on the beach would take way too long and way too much energy. It’s much easier to tuck your tail between your legs and go back home to work things out. Here’s another surprise for anyone thinking about getting married. You won’t always get your way. If you truly want to work things out neither one of you will be completely happy with results, but you will still love each other. My wife and I compromise all the time.

We have a rule that I will wash the clothes and put them in the dryer. She will fold and put the clothes away…unless she doesn’t want to. Neither one of us are completely happy with the arrangement. That’s compromise. I have to admit I sometimes take a juvenile approach to make my point. Although I look incredibly handsome with a goatee, my wife doesn’t like it. The last time we had a disagreement I decided I was going to grow a goatee until she admitted I was right and she was wrong. I still have the goatee. We may need to come to some sort of compromise soon. This thing itches like crazy. I’m proposing that I will shave the goatee if she admits I’m right…but only if she thinks I am. She has been part of my life for almost half of it and our ups certainly outnumber our downs. Our marriage has definitely been worth the work.

It may come as a shock, but you and your spouse aren’t always going to agree. Here’s another shocking statement. You aren’t always right. However, you could be like me and be right most of the time, but even I have to admit I’m not always right. In fact, the longer we stay married the less right I am. How do I know that? line version of the same test. This trend was not only apparent between schools but also among students within the same schools. These differences have caused many school administrators to consider paper and pencil versions of this year’s AIR standardized test. The last day for schools to opt for paper testing was Jan. 11, three days before part one of the School Report Cards were released. Many administrators have raised concern because they were not given an opportunity to react to this new evi-

dence demonstrating that paper testing could be advantageous in comparison to the online option. In response to the concerns of several school administrators, Representative Buchy has sent a letter to Ohio Department of Education Interim Superintendent Dr. Lonny Rivera requesting a timely plan to allow ad-

Wave track and field win BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – Tippecanoe and Union City, IN traveled to Greenville for a Wednesday evening track meet at Harmon Field. “Tracks a pretty tough sport and that is what makes it so fun,” said Greenville Head Track and Field Coach Bill Plessinger. “The competitiveness, the mutual respect and the ‘fraternal-ness’ of the sport even though they are competing against one another… it’s a great thing.” The Lady Wave took first place in the tri-meet with 76 total points followed closely by Tippecanoe Lady Red Devils in second place with 74 points and rounding out the event was the Lady Indians from Union City, Indiana with 35 points. “We seem to be doing well,” Plessinger said. “These meets are kind of a fun experiment especially kids in new events. I actually found a couple of things tody… people that have done well that I didn’t expect.” The Greenville boys took first place matching the Lady Wave’s total

of 76 points, Tippecanoe finished second with 71 points while Union City rounded out the meet with 35 points on the day. “It’s been a good meet,” said Plessinger. “It’s still early… it’s still cold. I tease my kids; sometimes my kids think the cold is just for us but I tell them it’s for everybody. We just have to get used to it. It’s spring in Ohio, but it was a good meet.” As with each year, Coach Plessinger has a very large group of Greenville students, both girls and boys competing for the Green Wave. “You want to be competitive but you got to have fun,” stated Plessinger. “If you can’t have fun when you’re going this and make it all work and no play you’re not going to get the kids out. I want them to have fun but at the same time I want to have them compete and work hard. There is a fine line you can find there and actually we have had pretty good success with that and what is cool the kids are having fun with the kids form the other schools and I’m having fun with the kids from other schools.”

Lady Trojans over Bradford BY CLINTON RANDALL STAFF WRITER crandall@earlybirdpaper.com

BRADFORD – Coming off a win over Ansonia on Monday, the Arcanum softball team traveled to Bradford Tuesday afternoon for a Cross County Conference showdown with the Roaders. Arcanum starting pitcher Elle Siculan, suffering from a leg injury, was relieved in the bottom of the 2nd inning by Abbie Bruns

with the team leading 6-3. Bruns and the Lady Trojans defense held the Roaders from adding to their score, while the Arcanum batting drove in seven more runs to take a 13-3 victory after five innings. “We have been hitting the ball good lately and hopefully that will continue,” said Arcanum Coach Rick Stone. “Bradford is a great team and we were fortunate to get us a big win.”

GREENVILLE – Good teams find a way to win… Lady Wave score four runs in the bottom of the ninth to pull out an extra-inning heart-stopper over the Troy Lady Trojans. “Great stuff,” said Greenville Coach Jerrod Newland. “As Yogi says: ‘It ain’t over till it’s over’.” Makayla Hanes delivered a basses loaded walkoff triple in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Lady Wave to a 5-4 win over Troy in the teams’ GWOC opener. The Lady Wave used back-to-back Karsyn Shaffer and Alli Hill singles with both runners advancing by way of a Trojans’ wild pitch followed with Shaffer racing home on a Troy past ball to lead 1-0 after three innings of play. The visitors tied the game in the top of the fourth taking advantage of a Wave error making a 1-1 score. Two Troy errors in the bottom of the eighth had Greenville runners on first and third with one out only to be left stranded with the game going to the ninth inning of play. “Had a few golden

GREENVILLE – The Green Wave varsity baseball team fell 12-8 to the Fort Recovery Indians in an 11-inning game. “They can play,” Greenville Coach Eric Blumenstock said of his Wave team. “Came in today with a 1-2 record with a 1.0 ERA with our pitching staff.” “We have to hit the ball and we have to field the ball,” continued Blumenstock. “I thought those were going to be two or our strengths this year so we have some things to work on. We’ll keep fighting.” The visitors took an early 1-0 first inning lead with the Wave battling back to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second with the aid of an Indians throwing error. Fort Recovery used a double to right, a walk and an RBI single to left to take the a 2-1 advantage in the top of the third only to have Greenville’s Jacob Hounshell open the bottom of the inning with a single to left followed by back-to-back walks to Logan Eldridge and Tanner Ross loading the bases for an RBI single to left off the bat of Jason Shields knotting the score at 2-2.

The Indians added three fourth inning runs and pushed a run across in the fifth to take a 6-4 advantage after five innings of play. The Wave made it a 6-5 game at the end of six with Greenville using an Indians dropped third strike, two errors and a Kyle Mills single. Greenville sent the game to extra innings getting a one-out Indians error on a Brandon Beyke infield popup, a Beyke steal of second and a two-out Brayden York RBI single to center knotting the score at 6-6 sending the teams to extra innings. Fort Recovery put two runs on the board in the top of the eighth to lead 8-6 with the boys from Greenville coming to the plate in the bottom of the inning. Troy took advantage of two uncharacteristic ninth-inning Lady Wave errors to take a 4-1 lead with the home team coming to the plate. “They scored a few to push us late when we didn’t make a few plays,” stated Newland, “and put some pressure on.” With their backs against the wall and Coach Newland’s steady encouragement the Girls from Greenville began their impressive come-back bid starting with an Ashton Kester 2-base hit. Troy downs Wave freshman team BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – The improved play on the field of the Green Wave freshman baseball team may not be reflected in the final score in a Wednesday night game at Sater Park as the young team fell to the Troy Trojans by a 12-4 score. “We just had a couple bad breaks but they are much better than the last game,” said Freshman Coach Chris Ward. The visitors jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning of play before the Wave would plate a run in the bottom of the second to trail 3-1. Greenville scored a run in the bottom of the third by way of a no-out bases loaded walk to trail 4-2 with the teams going to the fourth inning of play. “A base hit in a key situation and we’re up by a run as opposed to trailing,” Ward said. The score would stand at 4-2 through four complete

with Troy adding two runs in the top of the fifth to lead 6-2 with the Green Wave tacking on a run in the bottom of the inning to trail 6-3. The Trojans would get a two RBI two-out triple to right making an 8-3 score with the Wave scoring a run in their half of the inning to trail 8-4 with six innings of play in the book. Troy would send nine batters to the plate to score four runs in the top of the seventh while Greenville was going quietly in the bottom of the inning as high winds, blowing rain, sleet and hail set in, in the Wave’s final at-bat. “We just had one inning where they just hit the ball at the very end,” said Ward. “Just a couple inning before that we were down by two with bases loaded. A base hit ties the game.” “They played a lot better than they played the last time we had a freshman game…so baby steps,” added Ward. “They are getting a little better each game.”

GREENVILLE – Wave senior Allison Minnich combined with sophomore Sydney Grote for a perfect game as LWSB run ruled the West Carrolton Pirates 11-0 in five innings. “Great stuff coming out and playing a perfect game for the two,” said Greenville Coach Jarred Newland. “Minnich and Grote combined… 15 up, 15 down.” Carrollton came into the game sporting a 2-0 record having defeated Chaminade Julienne 10-3 in their season opener and followed up with a 14-4 win over Carroll. Minnich opened the game pitching four perfect innings while striking out five. Grote struck out two Pirates in one inning of relief capping off the five-inning perfect game. “It’s good… keep the ball down and pound it in the ground and we make six or seven plays behind them,” Newland said. “Just good

stuff and proud of both of them.” “It’s the name on the front,” continued Newland. “I know Allison Minnich has a perfect after four. It doesn’t matter to us. After we got up five there’s Grote getting loose. She was coming if it was 4-0, 5-0. We just play for the name on the front and that is Greenville softball. Bottom line… get a win today and move to 5-0.” Greenville got all the offense needed with a second inning Makayla Hanes triple and scoring on a pastball for a 1-0 Wave lead. The Lady Wave made it a 3-0 lead at the end of three and plated eight fourth-inning runs to lead 11-0 after four. Greenville took advantage of smart base running keeping Carrollton off balance while falling prey to multiple past balls and errors in the eight-run fourth. The fourth included a seldom seen strikeout that turned into three runs scoring including the Wave hitter that started

Trojans perfect in conference play BY CLINTON RANDALL STAFF WRITER crandall@earlybirdpaper.com

BRADFORD – With a 7-5 win over Bradford Tuesday, the Arcanum baseball team moved to (4-2) overall and a perfect (3-0) in the Cross County Conference. The Trojans took advantage of some early mistakes by the Railroaders defense to bring in three runs in the first inning. Braford battled back and kept the game tight, but were unable

to overcome the early score deficit. Starting pitcher Cole Burrell got the win for Arcanum, with a late game relief by Connor Pohl to secure the save for the Trojans. “We made several errors in the field we definitely need to clean up,” Arcanum Coach Randy Baker noted. “Offensively, we need to do a little better job at not leaving base runners in scoring position and close out the game.”

Blackhawks, Tigers split CCC doubleheader BY CLINTON RANDALL STAFF WRITER crandall@earlybirdpaper.com

ANSONIA – It was a blustery cold and windy day for baseball as the Ansonia Tigers hosted the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks in a Cross County Conference rivalry doubleheader Saturday morning. Anosnia got off to a big start early as MV walked six batters, taking a 8-3 victory in game one. The Hawks got things turned

around offensively in the second game to run-rule the Tigers 12-0. “We definitely played better in the second game, but the main difference between the two was we did not throw strikes in the first game,” said MV Head Coach Max Guillozet. “The conditions were tough today with the weather, but it was the same for both teams. You have to bear down and get it done.”

The week will be planned around Music Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Work Together Wednesday, Ooey Gooey Thursday and Family Friday. The teams are pulling out all the stops and helping the children celebrate every day with a new experience. Liz Pfenning, early childhood director, said “High quality prekindergarten programs do improve school readiness with the greatest gains for the highest-risk children. Children need small classes, welltrained teachers, a curriculum aligned with high standards and support services for children and families.

Jerry Springer is shown with Democratic office holders and candidates from Darke County.

Springer trumpets Democratic values RYAN BERRY

MANAGING EDITOR editor@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – There were no shouts of “Jerry, Jerry, Jerry” and there wasn’t even a hint of a disagreement, let alone a brawl, when the legendary Jerry Springer came to Greenville. Instead, his audience saw a side of Springer his Jerry Springer Show audience seldom sees. On April 6, Springer shared his passion for politics and the Democratic Party at the Darke County Democrats Spring Gala. Springer has been many things during his lifetime, including attorney, mayor, Emmy award winning news anchor, dancer, game show host and talk show host. There has been one common thread that has been interwoven through all of those career paths – his passion for Democratic principles and values. Springer continues to devote two days a week to the Democratic Party, mainly in Ohio. He said the party has access to his schedule and sends him to talk to communities like Darke County. His message to local Democrats – “We Americans cannot afford to have a Republican president this time…even a ‘responsible one.’ No Republican presi-

dent will be able to veto this right wing congress.” Although he didn’t make a plea or single out either of the Democratic presidential candidates, Springer made it clear he doesn’t believe Donald Trump’s candidacy is good for America. “I’m offended that he’s running,” he said. “How much do you disrespect this country that you think you can be president of the United States and leader of the free world and never have been in government before; never had to run any level of a community or a government? Business has nothing to do with being in politics. In business the motive is profit. In government, the motive is service.” “Why are we Democrats?” Springer asked. He said it is as simple as what your mom told you when you went to third grade, “Be a good decent, caring person…What do you teach little Johnny when he’s playing with his toys? To share his toys, to be nice, not hit the other kid.” Springer said Democrats have been demonized and told they were going to hell for supporting or voting for certain policies. “No one is going to hell because they passed Obamacare. It ain’t gonna happen.” He added, “You may if you watch my show.”

GREENVILLE - The YMCA of Darke County recently held its annual Report and Achievement Dinner. Local administration, staff, board and select members gathered March 31 at Romer’s Catering in Greenville to recognize individuals that helped make the Y a better facility for not only it’s members, but the Darke County community as a whole. Two local businessmen, coincidentally sharing the same first name of John, were awarded Volunteer of the Year for 2015. John Keller and John Swallow were presented the award by Darke County CEO Sam Casalano, who read off each of their many accomplishments and their loyal contributions to the Y. Casalano noted that Keller “may have missed his true calling” as a politician and has been a life-long political advocate for his community and state. He is an active member of the community, previously serving on several boards - in addition to the Y - and became manager of his family-owned business, Keller Grain & Feed. “I have heard John (Keller) described as a man of humility by many who know him,” Casalano explained. “He has given his adult life to serve others and make life better for all residents in our area.” As a volunteer, Second National Bank President & CEO John Swallow has served as a board member of the Y two times and is currently a member of the Finance Committee. His list of activities over the years is nothing short of impressive.

“I am not sure that John (Swallow) actually sleeps,” Casalano joking said. “He is one of the savviest financial geniuses I know. Our YMCA is much more fiscally sound due to his insight and influence.” Moving on with the awards, Casalano presented Financial Achievement Services President Matt Arnold with the first ever ‘Friend of the Y’ special award. He and his wife were generous supporters of the several special projects the Darke County YMCA have completed and set in motion to make necessary upgrades and positive changes for it’s members. “Matt and his wife Angie move mountains to make our YMCA needs and wishes become reality,” Casalano stated. “Every year this thoughtful couple blesses us with their extreme generosity, but that is only the tip of the iceberg.” Eunice Steinbrecher representing the Special Committee Founding Members, was recognized for all of her time and effort in helping make the special projects come to life. “The impact of her efforts are so loud and monumental, its ripple effect will be felt for generations to come,” stated Casalano. “She has been a forerunner and visionary for our association for decades.”

In addition to several local individuals and business donors to both the Versailles and Greenville facilities, Gloria and Bill Hole of the Coppock-Hole Foundation was honored for bringing many projects to fruition through their generous contributions to the Y. These projects included the Childcare addition and pool area at the Greenville branch. “Thank you for your long-standing contributions and support of the work at the Darke County YMCA. You have made an impact on thousands of lives,” Casalano told Gloria Hole as she was presented with the

Champions of Hope honor. Finally, presented with this year’s Member of the Year honor was Matt VanCulin... who overcame many physical obstacles and is a true inspiration to all those around him. Casalano said, “He works so hard to overcome challenges and shows us that no matter what life throws at you, you can always make the most of it!” Learn more about what the YMCA of Darke County has to offer at ymcadarkecounty.org or contact them at 937-548-3777 (Greenville), 937-526-4488 (Versailles).

Ansonia FFA Greenhouse a blooming business SUSAN HARTLEY

STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com

ANSONIA – Warm temperatures can’t come soon enough for Ansonia FFA. Again this year, students are busy preparing gardening plants, trees and flowers for sale as part of the school’s agriculture program, which includes two very full greenhouses and a garden center. Boasting more than 500 varieties of plants and flowers, the greenhouse project, which started in 2004, provides a great opportunity for learning and work, say students and their teacher, Brad Lentz. “It’s a good leadership experience,” believes senior Madison Evers. “You learn how to interact with other people and find your voice in a crowd.” Evers not only works with plants in her school’s greenhouse, she also keeps busy at home with her family’s vegetable garden. “We make salsa, juice, applesauce,” Evers said, with home-grown produce.

Evers, who also is an employee of the school’s greenhouse program, plans to take her leadership skills on to Wright State University this fall where she plans to study English as a secondary education major. One reason Robert Christman said he enjoys his experiences in FFA and as a greenhouse worker is that he is gaining knowledge “to continue growing my businesses I have with poultry and a mixture of mowing and mulching.” Christman, a junior who plans to join the Air Force following graduation, also is a FFA state finalist, one of the top four students in the state to earn an award for nursery operations proficiency. “They’re getting a good work ethic,” Lentz said of his students. “One day they’ll have their own home with a lawn and landscaping work they’ll have to do.” All of the planting and care of the plants in the school’s greenhouses are performed by students, said Lentz, who visits other

The Ansonia FFA Greenhouse is bustling with activity, getting ready for the May 7 Mother’s Day Spectacular. The greenhouse is now open on Fridays and Saturdays, weather permitting. growers and sellers in the area to get a feel for pricing. “I think we’re in the ballpark,” he said. Another plus, he explained, is that the FFA’s plants are grown locally, as opposed to those that are shipped to big box stores and may take weeks to acclimate to their new surroundings. The Ansonia FFA greenhouse offers a large variety of vegetable bedding plants

– including more than 60 varieties of tomatoes. There are 50-60 different kinds of vegetables for sale, as well as a variety of trees – apple, peach, pear and evergreens. Flowers of all kinds for bedding and hanging baskets are beginning to bud and will be all set to go for the FFA’s Mother’s Day Spectacular, set for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 7. “Mother’s Day is like our

Superbowl for us,” Lentz explained. “We set up a tent and there are 15 to 20 other vendors who set up with gift items for Mother’s Day.” The event also includes food for sale and a bouncy house for the kids. “It’s more of an event than just a plant sale,” Lentz said of the Mother’s Day Spectacular. Working with customers is a plus for senior Tyler Greer. “I like to help our customers and every year. We get some of the same customers and have built a relationship with them.” Following graduation, Greer plans to study Real Estate at Sinclair. The Ansonia FFA program, with 125 students this year, also assists other area schools with their ag projects, Lentz said, offering assistance with supplies, soil and seedlings. For example, Miami East FFA has a mum sale every year and has worked with Lentz to obtain supplies. The greenhouse is currently open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and from 9

a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, weather permitting. On April 22, it will be open seven days a week – 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; and from 12-3 p.m. Sunday. More information about the greenhouse hours and sales may be found on Facebook at Ansonia FFA Greenhouse. Customers also may visit the school’s garden center, which offers potting soils, fertilizer and sprays for sale. Proceeds from plant sales go back to the FFA program, renovating and upkeep of the greenhouses and for the 6-8 studentemployees who work year round, Lentz explained. “We grow our own mums and have a vegetable garden, from which we take produce to the Farmers Market in Greenville. We work summer, fall, spring.” Christman didn’t want Lentz to forget about the work students do in the greenhouse during the winter months. “There’s always work,” he said.

Area students get first-hand look at county government BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com

DARKE COUNTY – A couple Darke County high school students spent part of their day on April 6 in handcuffs. “I don’t ever want that to happen again,” said Kane Kimmel, a junior at Ansonia High School of his experience being “arrested” on a “pretend” DUI charge. Kimmel, along with 20 other high school students from around the county, participated in Darke County Student Government Day, hosted by the county commissioners. Commissioners also signed a proclamation declaring April as National County Government Month. A visit to the Darke County Sheriff’s Department and a mock trial were among the various activities in which students participated. Divided into three groups, the students spent a portion of their day being escorted by a commissioner as they visited several county offices and departments. Kimmel said he was surprised at the number of buildings owned by the

county. “Actually, there are quite a few buildings that I didn’t realize are part of the county government,” he said. Kimmel plans to study mechanical engineering after high school. Greenville senior Parker Allison was chosen from his group to experience being placed in handcuffs, and said he “really liked” learning how local government works on his behalf. “I was surprised about how many people are involved in county government,” said Allison, who will attend Wright State University this fall to study computer science and play golf for the Raiders. Mississinawa’s Makayla Connor, a junior, said her tour of the county jail would be “the first and last time. It’s a lot different than what you think it is.” The future elementary teacher also mentioned she enjoyed attending a bond hearing and a mock trial. According to Versailles government teacher John Jackson, a tour of county government goes hand-inhand with Ohio high school curriculum. “It gives them a firsthand experience for what they are learning in the classroom. Government is more than words on paper. Here they can see it in action,” he explained. Following a pizza lunch hosted by the commissioners, students attended the April 6 regular commission meeting, where they were each given a certificate for their participation in the

day’s events. Jackson said the three students from Versailles who attended county government day will now go back and share what they learned with fellow students, which is what Commissioner Diane Delaplane asked of the entire group. “Now, go back and share what you learned,” she told the students. “The day went very well,” commission chairman Mike Stegall told students. “We’d like to see some of you go into county government. We need it. The future belongs to you, not us.” Students who participated in Darke County Student Government Day included Katy Bolen, Kane Kimmel

and Zack Longenecker from Ansonia; Sam Artz, Cody Meeks and Allie Moore from Arcanum; MaKenzie Kreitzer, Danielle McVey and Grace Zimmerman from Franklin Monroe; Parker Allison, Eric Pence and Joe Suter from Greenville; Makayla Connor, Shaiann Livingston and Shelby Manning from Mississinawa; Emma Campbell, Shelby Holzapfel and Kaylor Pearson from Tri Village; and Kyle Cotner, Kari Kueterman and Amy Worden from Versailles.

Lisbon Cemetery cleanup and new rules UNION CITY, Ind. – The Board of Directors of the Lisbon Cemetery announce the yearly cemetery spring clean-up will be observed through May 15. Families and loved ones are asked to remove all decorations and items from around the gravesites by April 15 so the grounds can be properly maintained. During this clean-up period only monument based or headstone decorations are allowed. The directors ask all who are involved with or visit loved ones in the cemetery to pay particular attention to the new rules, effective Aug. 31, 2015, that are posted on the cemetery maintenance building. The new rules list the holiday periods and explain that during these periods decorations such as flowers, flower pots, wreaths, etc. may be placed on the grass, preferably close to the monument base. Glass containers are not permitted. The aforementioned holiday decorations

must be removed within 15 days of the stated holiday or they will be removed by the cemetery caretakers. Signs have been posted with a complete list of rules for the cemetery. The directors encourage and permit general housekeeping around a loved one’s memorial to help the cemetery caretakers maintain the appearance of the cemetery. They also want to thank everyone for their cooperation to keep the cemetery beautiful for all. Questions pertaining to the cemetery with respect to holiday periods, the new rules, or gravesites may be asked by calling (765) 964-5004.
