had not received the refund so contacted the U.S. Treasury Department and they advised they would put a tracker on the check in order to find out if it had been lost in the mail or not been mailed yet. Eckard then told officers he had received a letter in the mail from the U.S. Treasury Department stating his refund check had already been cashed. The letter also contained a photocopy of the cashed check. Eckard said he never received the check in the mail nor did he give anyone permission to open his mail and or cash the check. Eckard showed the officer the photo copy of the check, which was signed on the back in cursive, and appeared to be his name “Devin W Eckard” then underneath his name it said “Pay to the order of Doug Allsup,” then signed Doug Allsup in cursive. Eckard stated the mail to the apartment comes to a mailbox in the front of the building and his neighbor’s name is Douglas Allsup. Eckard said he was furious when he saw the check was signed by Allsup so he went to his residence and confronted him about the incident. Eckard stated Allsup answered the door and was very defensive and threatened to fight him. Eckard stated he decided to leave and call police. Upon further investigation, the officer could see the mailbox to the victim’s residence is located near a stairway leading to Allsup’s residence. The officer also noted on the copy of the cashed check that it was cashed at Fifth Third Bank on March 25. The officer made contact with Allsup at his residence shortly after speaking with the victim. Allsup was asked about the incident and according to the report, he took a defensive posture by crossing his arms and stating that someone stole his identity. Allsup was shouting things that were not relevant to the situation and attempting to change the topic about why police were speaking with him. The officer informed Allsup he knew where the check was cashed and his cooperation in the matter could possibly make things easier. Allsup then stated he did cash the check because he needed money. After Allsup’s incriminating statement, he was asked to step outside with the officer. At that point, another officer arrived on scene. According to the report, Allsup’s signature on the Miranda Warnings page was very similar to that of the signature on the check. Allsup stated he cashed the check at Fifth Third in Greenville and he took the check out of the mailbox. Allsup refused to write a statement. Allsup was released from the scene and advised that charges were pending. A copy of the report was sent to the Darke County Prosecutor’s office for review. Allsup is being charged with forgery and theft. Fifth Third Bank also was contacted for surveillance video of the incident or the original check from the incident. On May 31, an officer was dispatched to the CVS on East Main Street in ref-

erence to a forged prescription. On arrival, the officer spoke with Ron Holzapfel who advised that a white female, approximately 5’7” to 5’8” with blonde/brown hair attempted to get a prescription for Promethazine-Codeine filled. The prescription was under the name of a 71-year-old woman. Store managers are making a copy of the surveillance video to forward to the police department for review. A copy of the prescription was placed into evidence. The unknown female had left the area before officers arrived. She entered a white Toyota four-door with Texas plates. Overdose

On May 28 two officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Hall Street on a possible overdose. Upon arrival, Pamela Cooper said her son Todd Kuhn was locked in the bathroom and had possibly overdosed on heroin. Cooper said she left the residence for a time and when she returned, the bathroom door was locked and she could hear Kuhn breathing through the door. Kuhn would not answer his mother or police officers, but he could be heard breathing and gasping for breath. In order to check on his welfare, an officer forced the locked bathroom door open and Kuhn was found lying in the bathtub. There was a hypodermic needle beside him in the tub. He was confused, sleepy and unaware of what was going on. A baggie of 36 capsules were found on the bathroom sink. The capsules contained a small amount of a white rocky substance believed to be heroin. A metal tube was found in his front jeans pocket. Kuhn was asked if the capsules and syringe belonged to him. He did not answer. Greenville Township responded and transported Kuhn to Wayne HealthCare. The above listed items were transported to the Greenville Police Department and placed into property. They will be sent to the Miami Crime lab and tested for drugs. Charges are pending on test results.

bound onto Walnut Street. Upon checking the vehicle through LEADS/NCIC, the officer found the registration had expired May 17. A traffic stop was conducted and the officer noticed that the female driver had an open container of Mike’s Hard Lemonade sitting in her lap. The defendant also had what appeared to be an alcoholic beverage spilled on the front of her clothing. The defendant’s speech was extremely slurred. When asked about alcohol consumption prior to driving, the defendant stated she had consumed four Mike’s Hard alcoholic beverages. When asked to exit the vehicle, the defendant stumbled and nearly fell. The defendant refused to perform field sobriety tests and admitted to consuming five beverages rather than four. The defendant was placed under arrest and transported to the Greenville Police Department where she agreed to a breath test. LEADS/NCIC also showed the defendant did not have a valid operator’s license. The defendant was placed under an administrative license suspension cited for stop sign, OVI, and driving without a license. Juvenile Complaint

On May 30 an officer was dispatched to the 300block of Short Street in reference to a call of suspicious people in the area along with a strong odor of marijuana. The officer was told by the complainant that the subjects parked their car in the 300-block of Short Street and proceeded to walk a few feet west to the railroad tracks. The subjects then proceeded to travel south down the railroad tracks. The officer followed the tracks southbound while another officer walked down the tracks northbound from Vine Street. The subjects were found

under the bridge located near Tecumseh Point. One subject appeared to be drinking but I could not determine which one. The officer ordered all subjects to come to the top of the bridge and they complied. The subjects were found to be John Haberny, Eyvone Fields, Bailey Hardin, and two juveniles, ages 17 and 15. The subjects advised the officer they were going to go tubing down the creek using inflatable mattresses. The juveniles were taken to the police cruiser and their parents were contacted. Both subjects were cited for curfew and released from the scene. Disorderly Conduct

On May 24 an officer was driving on Sater Street near Gray Avenue to check on a vehicle because a suspect, Larry Keaser, made threats to damage the vehicle earlier in the night. Keaser and the owner of the vehicle, Britany Keaser are separated. The vehicle was still on Sater Street but it had more damage to it. Britany Keaser was contacted and advised that due to them being married the damage was civil. However there was glass lying in the roadway and the suspect did not pick it up after damaging the windows. Larry Keaser also caused annoyance and inconvenience to Britany Keaser by causing harm to their shared property while within 1000 feet of South School. The defendant told officers on a recorded line that he did break out all the windows on Britany’s car. He said that he punched the first window, which caused him injury, and hit the other windows with a brick. When an officer attempted to talk with Larry Keaser he was intoxicated and had his hand wrapped up and what appeared to be a splint on one of his fingers. Keaser was issued a citation for littering and disorderly conduct.

DUI

On May 30, an officer observed the defendant (not named in report) operating a vehicle eastbound on East Third Street near Walnut Street. The defendant traveled through a clearly posted stop sign at the intersection of East Third and Walnut Street then stopped partially in the intersection. The defendant then turned the listed vehicle south-

Investigation suspended in Greenville stabbing case BY CLINTON RANDALL STAFF WRITER crandall@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – The Greenville Police Department has officially suspended the investigation into the May 16 stabbing at a local gas station. The investigation began following an altercation between two males around 10 p.m. at the Circle Mart in Greenville. Police and emergency medical personnel were then dispatched to the scene after one of the men involved, 20-yearold Zackary Wilkerson of Greenville, was stabbed with a pocket knife in the chest. Wilkerson was air-

lifted to Miami Valley Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to repair a wound to his heart. Authorities told The Early Bird that several obstacles during the investigation left them with little choice, but to close the case. In addition to some conflicting statements by potential witnesses and the actual stabbing was not caught by surveillance cameras at the gas station, Wilkerson chose not to provide law enforcement with an official statement following his recovery and insisted he did not wish to press any charges. These setbacks, along with the

The motorcycle came to rest in the median of the highway. The occupants of the motorcycle were Justin Ungericht, 32, of Greenville and Tyra Vanatta, 25, also of Greenville. Both occupants on the motorcycle were ejected and neither person was wearing a helmet. Ungericht and Vanatta were transported to Miami Valley Hospital by CareFlight. Leis Realty helps beautify old Greenville Park fountain GREENVILLE – The Leis Realty Company has undertaken a community garden project. The garden chosen was the old fountain area in the Greenville City Park – close to the band shell. Volunteers from Leis Realty included Dustin, Ashley & Joshua Leis, Barb Leis, Kim Leis Anderson, Elaine Laux, Shirley Rasor, Melissa & Mallory Rosenbeck and Melissa Barton. They donated their time on Saturday, May 21 in the first phase of the “garden makeover” by planting annuals,

perennials and spreading new mulch. In addition to the Leis Realty staff and family members, Giovanni’s Painting power washed the area and the monument in the center of the garden. Hupman Lawn Care tore out existing plant material, tilled the area and added topsoil. Lowe’s donated the mulch and Miller Flowers gave the plants and flowers. To complete the project, local artist Alex Lance will paint the existing centerpiece monument.

ON YOUR MIND

Commissioners’ Corner May has been a very busy month in the Commissioner’s office, as it has been around the county. Farmers have worked feverishly to get their plowing and planting done. It hasn’t been easy with the rain earlier in the month, but now as this is written, we could use a good shower to help those crops grow. May is always a time of renewal, and this year we suspect will be no different. May is the month when all of our departments submit their budget requests for next year. Although, we have no idea what the rest of the year will bring, we ask department heads to give us an idea of what they expect for next year. It is a guesstimate of the future needs of each department, but it gives us some idea of what will be needed. All departments are asked to hold the line as much as possible, and most do a very good job of that, but there are always outside demands on some of the departments that are coming down the pike they have no control over. This process gives us an idea of what is needed, but it is not written in stone. We will know more by November when we do appropriations for the departments. Be sure to thank your elected officials for doing a great job of holding down costs, and making their departments some of the most efficient in the state. This past month, the Commissioners have had a lot on their agendas. Not only have we had budget meetings, but we have had meetings on the courthouse steps project, held a ground breaking for Erwin Brothers new truck stop at the South Industrial Park, and saw O.D.O.T. finally get started on their new facility across the street from Erwin Brothers. We want to wish both facilities much success and welcome them to the Industrial Park. Commissioner Stegall, the chairman this year, had Board of Revision reviews early in the month, and on the same day, May 3, Whirlpool had its official opening of their new manufacturing facility. This month also saw the search for a new economic development director continue, and we hope to be able to announce a new director soon. Our Economic Development Forum was well attended by about 120 investors and guests and held at Romer’s in Greenville. Presentations by Lisa Wendel, the Career Pathway Coordinator, highlighting our efforts with high school students, and our career day were heard, along with Jared Ebbing from Mercer County presenting updates on our website home-

townopportunity.com. Julie Sullivan from the Dayton Development Coalition gave an update on the outlook for the Dayton region, and there seems to be no slowdown expected. Getting enough workers continues to be a problem area that everyone is working on. Continuing to supply our companies with an eager, competent workforce will be our focus for the foreseeable future. There are plenty of good, high paying jobs in all areas; engineering, medical, financial, environmental, and of course manufacturing. If you know of someone interested in finding employment, please visit the website hometownopportunity.com and find the career you are looking for. The highlight of the forum was the announcement of JAFE Glass as the “Business of the Year”. Congratulations to Randy O’Dell and the whole crew for this honor that was well deserved! On May 19, Sheriff Spencer held an awards and appreciation dinner for his deputies, dispatchers, and one Greenville officer for their outstanding work in saving lives this past year. Our deep appreciation for all of our law enforcement and dispatchers cannot be overstated. These people work extremely long hours to keep all of us safe, and they do it with very little fanfare. It was nice to see them all recognized for their fine work. Saturday, May 21 saw the first parade for the elected officials for the year at Arcanum’s Old Fashioned Days, but earlier that morning was the “Thank a Vet Run and Walk” at the fairgrounds. Commissioner Stegall was there, along with Representative Buchy who emceed the event. Although it was a little gloomy with the weather, the rain quit just in time for the participants in the 5k run and walk and for the parade. Both events were well attended, and a lot of people were uptown in Arcanum afterwards enjoying all the vendors who were there. This starts the parade season for us, and next up is Poultry Days on June 11. June is upon us, meaning the year is at its midpoint. This year seems to be flying by at a record pace. That is probably because everyone is busy now. If you do happen to have some free time, why not stop by the Commissioner’s Office for one of our public sessions? We meet every Monday and Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in our office at 520 South Broadway, just south of the Courthouse. Hope to see you there! The Darke County Commissioners.

A Bunch of Flimflam & Poppycock Ryan’s World by Ryan Berry Managing Editor bluebagmedia.com

RYAN BERRY

Do I bragMANAGING about my EDITOR daughters or do I share a tale about my not-so-wonderful day? Can I marry both stories into one flawless example of flimflam and/or poppycock? Challenge accepted. Although I usually write about what makes my daughters their own persons (euphemism for weird), I don’t really need much of an excuse to brag about either one of them. They are both special and have achieved much more than I could have dreamed of accomplishing when I was in school. They’ve also amassed more trophies, medals and ribbons in the past year than I did in a lifetime. Even if my daughters would have given me one of those little “World’s Greatest Dad” trophies for every Father’s Day they’ve been alive I still wouldn’t even be close to having the hardware that signifies what they’ve accomplished. However, I’m glad they don’t give me an award for being their father. Knowing my kids, all I would get is a participation ribbon. My youngest has taken a yappy Chihuahua who was scared of her own shadow and turned her into a prizewinning dog. She’s also received medals and awards in choir for her singing and going Above and Beyond. The going Above and Beyond I can understand, but the singing? Whenever she sings a solo at school we are always on the edge of our seat because we don’t know what to expect, but she always does a great job and we are left sitting there with our mouths open wondering how she managed to sound so good. We hear her singing in the car or around the house and it never sounds anything like what eventually comes out when she is on stage. I wouldn’t

say the sound of cats mating sounds better, but…Oh wait, yes I would. My oldest daughter also excels with her dog, but she has an advantage. Golden Retrievers are a lot smarter than Chihuahuas. Any awards she receives for showing her dog has more to do with the dog than it does with her. However, she continues to impress us in track & field. I should clarify that statement. She continues to impress us in field. I’m not sure she would know how to get to the track with GPS giving her step-by-step instructions. She is a thrower and she does it quite well. She is returning to the OHSAA Track & Field state meet in back-to-back years. Her main sport is shot put where she has set the

school record repeatedly, but this year she is going to state in an event she didn’t expect – discus. After failing to qualify in shot put, she put up an incredible throw in discus to set her own personal record. She is still a few feet off the school record, but she is hoping to get it in Columbus. Although she has been ranked in the top 10 in her division all year long, she had a very bad day at the regional meet and didn’t qualify. Basically, her brain melted into a gooey blob of brain mush. We will have to work on that for next year because gooey blobs of brain mush will get you nowhere. Speaking of bad days… So much for marrying to two stories into one flawless example of flimflam or

poppycock. Why is it life seldom follows a predictable pattern? I’ve heard people say the natural order of things should be this, this and this. Not in my life. My natural order is this, that, wait, this again and crap. I don’t like my natural order. For instance, as a hypothetical example (or not so hypothetical), I can drive on two rear tires with wires showing for about a month expecting a flat tire (or two) at any moment, but the flat tire never comes. Two weeks after getting the tires changed – I’m changing a tire and spending more money to get the tire replaced. “I’m sorry Mr. Berry, you didn’t have the road hazard coverage. You’ll have to pay the full price.” Now that’s a bunch of flimflam and poppycock.

We want to sign up as many as we can this year.” Camp SWONEKY had its beginnings in 1912 and was opened for underprivileged children who were referred to The Salvation Army by social agencies from all over Southwest Ohio and Northeast Kentucky. The camp name is an acronym for Southwest Ohio-Northeast Kentucky. The purpose of Salvation Army camping is to serve the needs of campers: physical, social, and spiritual. In meeting physical needs, their aim is to help children develop good health habits in cleanliness, proper rest, balanced diet, exercise, and care of the body. For social needs, the camp provides an opportunity for each camper to contribute to and receive from a group living experience, helping campers make their own right decisions, stimulate creativity, and foster independence. The fact that The Salvation Army is a religious organization makes it possible for its camping program to integrate concern for the spiritual dimension of life. Bashore talks Wave basketball and recent resignation GAYLEN BLOSSER

SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – In an exclusive interview with The Early Bird, Greenville boys basketball Coach Michael Bashore shared his decision to step away from a coaching job he loved and was proud to be a part of. “For personal reasons,” coach Bashore said. “I just couldn’t commit the time needed to be given to run a program…it’s really nothing more than that.” “You spend a couple hours a day during the season. The whole month of June you’re practicing and you’re doing stuff for the summer… and open gyms in April and May, September and October,” Bashore said. “You really only have about two months a year when you are not doing something. It’s kind of a full time job, but it’s something that I always wanted to do growing up and I was fortunate to be able to do it for 13 years.”

“Basketball has always been something I really enjoyed,” said the former GHS basketball player. “Not so much as what I learned as a player but the amazing coaches that I got to learn from.” “I worked with (Dave) Peltz and Tom Redding. I learned an awful lot from Scott McEldowney,” said Bashore. “All three of those guys gave me chances in my career to work with them.” Bashore, a 1992 Greenville graduate took over a Wave program experiencing a downward spiral having won two games in 2012, the year prior to his arrival. In his first year, Bashore’s team improved to 8-13 and followed with three consecutive winning seasons, most often going up against larger D-I schools while playing in the always competitive GWOC. In his second season the varsity team improved to 14-8. Coach Bashore did not go un-notice being named the 2015 AP Southwest District D-I “Big School”

Coach of the Year, (one of six D-I districts statewide) compiling an 18-4 regular season record while bringing a Conference Championship to Greenville for the first time in 60 years. “The championship was nice but just the daily interaction, not even about basketball stuff… talking to them about things that goes on in their everyday lives, or the jokes that they crack at practice. I’ll miss that a lot.” “I’ll miss the intensity coming out of the locker room right after the kids run out on the floor and the band is playing. That’s fun,” Bashore said. “There are a lot of things I’ll miss, but I’ll miss the boys the most.” “I have been very fortunate to have a very supportive wife,” Bashore said of his wife Elizabeth. “Without her I would not have been able to coach for all these years. With all the time spent away from home she has been fantastic and shown nothing but support for me.” “I’m going to miss it,” Bashore said. “I was

proud to be able to come back and along with a lot of other people make something positive at Greenville… Basketball again. I didn’t do it alone. There were people that helped out. I will always be thankful for that and I’m glad I was able to do that with those people.” In four years at GHS, Bashore leaves with a 5235 varsity coaching re-

cord (not counting each season’s final tournament loss) representing a 67.3

winning percentage. See complete story online at bluebagmedia.com

Lady Raider Ally Russell home for summer BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – 2015 Lady Wave Ally Russell was back in town taking in Greenville’s win over Houston. “It’s great to be back,” said Russell. “The whole summer, I am here.” “Always a Lady Wave…. that’s for sure,” said Russell of her playing days in Greenville . “I like to come back and support them. “Once it’s in the blood it’s in the blood,” Greenville Coach Jerrod Newland said of LWSB. “Kids love it and once you’re in the family you’re always in the family. That’s what it’s all about. Good kids, good community and good people…just so proud of her coming back.” Completing her first year with the NCAA D-I Wright State Lady Raiders softball team, Russell has plans of staying in Greenville before returning for her sophomore year at Wright State University. “Usually we take just a little bit of a break because you practice going nonstop for nine months,” Russell said of her college softball routine. “As soon as you get a little break you want to start up again because you can’t go back to school not ready at all. I will practice (this summer).” “I’m totally looking for-

ward to going back to it,” Russell said of returning for her sophomore year of studies and second year on the mound for the Lady Raiders. In her first season with the Lady Raiders the team compiled a 37-23 winning record as a member of the Horizon League. Russell was twice named Horizon Player of the Week pitching for the Lady Raiders and finished the season with an impressive 10-4 record for an 18 year old playing Division I ball. “I love pitching,” Russell said. “I tell my pitching coach, if I could pitch 10 times a day I would. It is so much fun. I just love doing it.”

Russell plans to spend her summer in Greenville giving pitching lessons to girls. “I have been giving lessons for the last few years,” said Russell. “If people need help…I have lots of experience. I’ve been doing it for a long time. I love helping people.” Russell understands the advantage that can come from girls taking pitching lessons to improve their skills as she had help growing up as a young aspiring softball player. “It doesn’t get any better than that…kids come back,” said Coach Newland. “Ally remembers when she was that little

8-9-10 year old kid and somebody showing her the right way to do it. No better kid than her. She just crosses t’s and dots i’s and does it the right way.” “When she was that young age and taking lessons from people she remembers how impactful that was,” added Newland. “Just a great kid and just does it the right way.” Girls interested in taking pitching lessons from Ally can reach her at 937564-0597. “If I can help somebody love pitching as much as I do,” said Russell, “I’d do it any day. I’m always looking for people to help.”

GGSA well into 44th softball season BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – The Greenville Girls Softball Association (GGSA) is well into its 44th season of summer softball in Greenville. School Leagues included during the summer season are Slow Pitch, T-Ball League (ages 4-6), Munchkin League (7-8), Minor League (9-11), Junior League (12-14), and Senior League (15-19). Ryan Hubbard, head coach of the Early Bird team is pleased with the progress and play of his Minor League softball team. “We teach them teamwork,” said Hubbard following a Wednesday night team win at Stebbins Field. “We’re working a lot on that and the girls are doing

really well with it.” Hubbard, the father of two girls playing on the Early Bird team said the girls are all easy to coach. “We are teaching basic fundamentals,” Hubbard said. “The girls still need to work on the fundamentals a little bit. We try to do that at practices and before the games.” “We’re teaching them not to swing at bad pitches,” continued Hubbard. “We want them to swing at good pitches…not too difficult for them since they are so young.” The teams play one game a week with a 10 week schedule and end the season with a league tournament. “They are great kids… they are having a lot of fun,” Hubbard said. “We are having a great time…so very blessed.”

Greenville ACME baseball run rules Russia BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – The Greenville ACME baseball team run ruled the Russia ACME team 15-4 in ďŹ veinnings. “They were ready to play tonight,â€? said Greenville ACME coach Trey Wolter. “They had the right mindset from the very ďŹ rst pitch. Even the younger kids who came in off the bench contributed.â€? Owen Paulus went the distance on the mound picking up the win striking out ďŹ ve while giving up ďŹ ve hits, three walks and three earned runs. “Owen Paulus pitched a great game tonight,â€? Wolter said. “Went the entire way. He kept them in check. They had a few good hits but for the most part he did his job throwing strikes and the defense

backed him up.â€? Greenville jumped out to an early 6-1 lead taking advantage of a triple to deep center off the bat of Brandon Beyke to open the bottom of the ďŹ rst. The Greenville boys made it 1-1 game with younger brother Tyler Beyke, a 2016 incoming freshman driving older brother Brandon, a 2016 incoming senior home with a RBI groundout. “Through the ďŹ rst two games they have played phenomenal together.â€? Coach Wolter said of the Beyke brothers. “Brandon always plays a very good centerďŹ eld. He has a lot of range out there. Tyler is more of a utility player. You can plug him in‌ put him where ever you want and he’ll do the job.â€? A Tanner Ross walk, a Kyle Mills double to center and a Peter Pandy walk

had the bases full with one down. Nathaniel Ridgeway drove a 2-RBI single to right giving Greenville a 3-0 advantage. Greenville made it 4-0 using a Grant Minnich RBI sacriďŹ ce y to right and took a 6-0 lead with a 2-RBI single off the bat of Tyler Bayke. Russia picked up a run in the top of the ďŹ rst only to be answered with two Greenville runs in the bottom of the inning upping the lead to 8-2 with a Pandy RBI triple and a Ridgeway RBI groundout. Both teams plated a third-inning run giving Greenville a 9-3 lead with the Wave’s run coming by way of a Tanner Ross sacriďŹ ce y. Greenville pushed sixruns across in the bottom of the fourth to take a 15-3 lead including a double to the fence in left off the bat

of 2016 incoming Wave freshman Alec Fletcher. “I wasn’t quite sure what to expect of him (Fletcher), but he really put a great swing on the ball, Wolter said. “Caught it on the sweet part of the bat. You

can tell he’s got talent. He’s young‌ he’s going to keep growing. He’s got a good future ahead of him and we’ll keep working with him and helping him grow.â€? Russia scored a run in the top of the ďŹ fth with

Greenville earning a 15-4 win. “We did a great job of stringing some hits together, said Wolter. “They put some good practice in the last few days and it showed tonight.

ville Police Department employees 23 officers and is now at full manpower to help better patrol the streets of Greenville, according to GPD Lt. Scot Ross. “We are excited to bring him on,” said Lt. Ross. “After about five months of field training he will join the other patrol officers on the streets.” McRill lives in Greenville with his wife Michelle and their three children – Ross, C.T. and Zoe. The newest Greenville Firefighter, Wayne Bruening, was officially sworn-in Tuesday as well. Bruening comes to the department with 13 years of service as a volunteer with North Star Fire and Montezuma FD under his belt. He has been an Ohio Certified Firefighter II since 2007 and has also served as an EMT with Ansonia and Greenville Twp. Rescue during his young career. “I love being a part of the fire department and the brotherhood that comes

with it,” Bruening said. “Greenville is a great department I am just happy to be a part of the team!” According to GFD Chief Mark Wolf, the addition of Bruening brings the department to a “reduced” full staff…at least until the

retirement of Asst. Chief David McDermitt at the end of June. Bruening is 29-yearsold and currently resides in North Star. He is a graduate of Coldwater High School in Mercer County.

Glazer judging held for 10th Tour de Donut ARCANUM – Organizers of the annual bicycle event, Tour de Donut, held their first Glazer Donut judging competition for this year’s 10th running of what is referred to as “The Sweetest Ride in Ohio”. To mark the race’s decade milestone, organizers from Rocketship Sports Management accepted entries from four area bakeries to decide which doughnuts would be selected for this year’s special Glazer stop. During the Arcanum Old Fashioned Days on May 21, eight total entries where judged to be represented at this year’s event. Each doughnut was judged on uniqueness, size, flavor and presentation. The two entries selected were the Brumbaugh Peanut Butter and Charlie’s Golden Crunch

GREENVILLE – Greenville’s East Intermediate third- and fourth-graders spent the last couple weeks of the school year immersed in reading about their favorite things. Celebrating Literacy Days, students used paper plates and red and white construction paper to make their very own Cat in the Hat hats and competed in a school-wide reading contest to see just how many minutes they could read. Logging each minute they read at home, students learned June 2 they read a total of 1,234 hours and 23 minutes. Class winners were Sherry Flora’s third-graders with a total of 1,200 minutes and fourth-graders in Amanda Davis’ class with 3,240 minutes. The two classes were treated to popcorn parties at the end of school. The top winners from each class were rewarded with goody bags, said third-grade teacher Donna Fischer, one of the reading program’s coordinators. “Read Across America is traditionally celebrated in February,” Fischer explained. “But due to testing, we decided to do it at

the end of school.” Teachers hope their students will be motivated to keep on reading during summer vacation. On Wednesday of this past week, students were encouraged to dress up like their favorite literary character. Breanna Landis, 8, was Super Girl, complete with a pink outfit and cape. “I like reading Super Pet books,” Landis said, “from the library.” Landis said her favorite books are stories about animals. Classmate Serenity Venrick, 9, came to school dressed up like a cat. “Because I like cats. I like to read to my little cousins,” said Venrick, who has two cats, Roscoe and Tula.

Haley Nolte, 10, dressed up like Dawn from the Poison Apple Book series, Dawn of the Dead. “She’s the main character in my favorite books,” Nolte said. Historical reading, especially about the military, is a favorite of James Ord, 9. “It’s one of the things I want to do in the future,” Ord said, noting he was contemplating a military career. “I look at a lot of art and old-fashioned books about kids in war.” Nolte said she believes reading “is really cool.” Ord advises his fellow students that “the more you read the more curious you get and the more you can use your imagination.”

The Darke and Miami Soil and Water Conservation Districts, City of Greenville, along with the Stillwater Watershed Project and the Park Districts of Darke and Miami Counties, are teaming up to provide an educational and fun trip covering a little over three miles on a tributary to one of Ohio’s most scenic rivers, the Greenville Creek. Over the course of the float you hear about stream quality monitoring, native aquatic species and water quality. Along the way there will be some hands on identification activities for participants. This is a great way to understand the importance and beauty of our state’s rivers and streams. Reserve your canoe now for a day of sun, fun and learning on Greenville Creek. GREENVILLE – South Middle School teacher Bill Plessinger will have some extra money to spend when school starts back up in August. Thanks to a raffle won by soon-to-be sixth-grader Nolan Ellis, Plessinger now has $100 to use for his science classes at South. The raffle is a program set up by Greenville and Troy orthodontist, Dr. Doug Gordon. “Dr. Gordon likes to give back to the community and our schools,” said Candy Snyder of the Greenville office. “Through the school year we have our fish bowl drawing where kids enter their name, school or teacher. Some of the teachers have thrown a pizza party for their class or use it if they need something for a certain project.” Nolan said he chose to enter Plessinger’s name because “he is my homeroom

teacher and I like science.” Also entered into the raffle was South teacher Rachel Jones – a favorite of Nolan’s twin, Noah. Since school is out for the year, Plessinger said he plans on using the $100 for next year. “I’m teaching an advanced sixth-grade science class next year,” Plessinger said, and is hoping Nolan

will be in that class. “No matter what, I want to make sure Nolan gets the benefit of the $100.” Like other sixth-grade boys, Nolan’s ideas about how to spend the money centers around some kind of exciting experiment. But he’ll have to wait until fall to find out how Plessinger plans to put the money to use.

GHS engineering students enjoy cookout Bradford lists 4th quarter honor roll

GREENVILLE – Greenville High Schools Engingeering Tech Prep students were treated to end-of-theyear cookouts recently by teachers Adam Eberwein and Chris Sykes. On May 26, senior students came back to the school for the final event prior to graduation. “They all had to come back in,” Eberwein said. “They are all pretty much done already for the year so they had to come back in just so we teachers could cook for them.” “We had a great group of kids,” Eberwein said. “A lot of them are going on to secondary school for engineering. One, Jacob Hounshell is going to Ohio State. We have a young lady that is going to go to Lincoln Tech, Jessica Hensley. She is going there for some machining and tooling.” Eberwein said the 201516 school year had “been a very good year” for the Engineering Tech Prep program. “There are 21 that are going to graduate. The junior class has about 26, I believe.” In addition to teaching, Eberwein, a 2003 GHS graduate, is the defensive coordinator for the Greenville varsity football team. Once an engineering student, he now teaches sideby-side with Sykes, his former instructor. Sykes calls his engineering students “outstanding kids. Each year I am always amazed how they’re advanced, how well they do and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with each one once they graduate.” Sykes said one thing he likes about Greenville is

Street Art Saturdays coming to Greenville

GREENVILLE – Next weekend, a new event art series will begin in downtown Greenville. Street Art Saturdays will transform downtown Greenville into a spontaneous, outdoor performing arts venue on the second Saturdays of the summer season. The 2016 season includes the dates of June 11, July 9, and Aug. 13. The events will take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and will feature six different locations, including musicians and visual artists set-up throughout the district. “We have seen the success of our First Friday events and wanted to build upon that,” said Amber Garrett, executive director for Main Street Greenville. “We feel this is a great opportunity to encourage individuals and families to make their way downtown on a Saturday morning or early afternoon, grab some breakfast, do some shopping, explore the already popular Farmers’ Market, take in the

arts, and hopefully stay for lunch.” The June 11 event will feature the following artists: The Indigos (11-person band from Muncie, Ind.), Ryan Fine (musician from Cincinnati), Achilles Tenderloin (musician from Richmond, Indiana), Sterling Gregory (rockbalancing artist from Dayton), The Mosaic Institute of Greater Dayton (mosaic glass artist from Dayton), and Logan Rogers (a painter from the Dayton area). The visual artists will be set-up from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., the band and musicians will perform from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and the Farmers’ Market will take place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. In addition, retail stores and restaurants will be open for all to enjoy. The series is free to the public and all are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit and enjoy the music. In the event of inclement weather, please visit Main Street Greenville’s website or social media outlets for

updates. Main Street Greenville is a non-profit organization committed to revitalization efforts in downtown Greenville, making it a desirable destination. The organization received funding for Street Art Saturdays from the Darke County Endowment for the Arts, the Vectren Foundation, Ohio Arts Council, and from citizens who made personal contributions. “These types of programs would not exist without the support of grants and donations, we are so thankful for all of the support we have received to get this series off the ground and we look forward to seeing everyone downtown,” said Garrett. Information about July and August’s events will be released in the near future. To learn more about Main Street Greenville and Street Art Saturdays, visit www.mainstreetgreenville.org, follow them on Facebook, or contact their office at 5484998.

Stay young for first 100 years with BPW Charlotte’s Bell book signing is June 11

GREENVILLE – “How to Stay Young for the First 100 Years” is the topic for the June 9 meeting of the Greenville Business & Professional Women’s (BPW) Club meeting. The meeting will be hosted by the 2016-2017 newly elected officers. Mary Baker, practice representative for Johnson Chiropractic, is excited to share a presentation on “How to Stay Young for the First 100 Years”. This brief, fun and enlightening program explains the many facets of a healthy lifestyle and

the role that chiropractic plays in keeping you mobile for the entire long life. Johnson Chiropractic Clinic, Inc. is committed to the health and wellness of our community. Dr. Kristine Clark of Johnson Chiropractic graduated from Wright State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and Logan College of Chiropractic with her Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Dr. Clark has been a patient of chiropractic since her early teens and realizes the value of natural health through

regular chiropractic care. She understands the body’s innate/inborn ability to heal and that healing comes from the inside out. Dr. Clark believes that when we have a health challenge of any type, we should always give the body the chance to heal itself first through the use of chiropractic spinal care, exercise, and good nutrition. Dr. Clark truly enjoys and celebrates with patients who experience healing and improved health through chiropractic care. The public is invited to attend the June 9 meeting

to find out ‘How to Stay Young for the First 100 Years”. The June 9 meeting will be held at the Private Dining Room at the Brethren’s Retirement Community at 750 Chestnut, Greenville. The dinner meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. The Greenville BPW Club invites women interested in learning more about the club to the meeting. YMCA Campaign Kickoff meeting held

DARKE COUNTY – The YMCA of Darke County kicked off its annual Community Partners Campaign with a goal of raising $175,000 for 2016. The annual campaign raises money that will help more local residents have access to vital community programs and services for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. During the campaign kickoff meeting, YMCA member Jeff Hufnagle spoke briefly about what the Y has meant to him. Hufnagle is a musician who suffered a devastating stroke five years ago that left him paralyzed on one side. He woke up in

a hospital, unable to move or communicate- he felt cut off from the world. “It took away everything I loved in life,” Hufnagle said. Hufnagle spent a year in the hospital, leaving in a wheelchair. He eventually learned to walk with a cane, and regained his driver’s license. He decided to join the Y because he wanted to take more responsibility for his recovery, and he knew the Y was a safe place. He has discovered that his favorite activity at the Y is using the pool. He comes to swim each week and says he appreciates the friendly greeting he gets every time he visits, and the knowledge that there’s always

During her senior years, Charlotte paid the ultimate sacrifice of devotion for her family within their cabin upon the LeisLease homestead location, of Greenville, community of Wakefield. The great granddaughters, as authors, have therefore dedicated their novel to the Charlotte A. Meir-Leis Legacy. The book will be available for Marilyn J. Lease-Fritz and Betty J. Summer lunch begins in Hollansburg

Many artists take reference photos outdoors either before or while working on a subject that cannot be transported.

Paint Out at DCP by Greenville Art Guild GREENVILLE – Join the Greenville Art Guild on June 11, 10 a.m., at Shawnee Prairie Preserve as they utilize a variety of mediums to capture the beauty of nature. Artists will be located around the grounds and trails throughout the day, and they invite the public to come watch them work. Visitors can expect to see artists working with everything from watercolors to oil, pencils to charcoal, even with colored pencils and photography. The artists encourage those who are interested in art to come see what they

are doing, talk with them about their craft, and ask questions. This is a great place to explore an interest in art and to find out if it is something to pursue lessons in. There are many local artists who perpetuate their skill through teaching and giving lessons. This event will continue rain or shine, so bring the family out to explore art in nature at Shawnee Prairie Preserve. For any questions about this event or any other program offered through Darke County Parks, call the park office at 548-0165 or email info@ darkecountyparks.org.

HOLLANSBURG – The Hollansburg Summer Lunch Program has started planning for its sixth year. This year they will again serve two hot meals a week to the people in Hollansburg and the surrounding area beginning June 6. The average attendance for each meal last year was 24. This program is supported by the Beech Grove Church of the Brethren, Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren and families in the Hollansburg area. The Hollansburg program helps children in the neighborhood who may have need of food assistance during the summer months. For 11 weeks, the children will enjoy a hot meal on Mondays and Wednesdays served at the Hollansburg Community Center. In addition to the meals, the New Madison Library is providing an educational program every Wednesday. The library team not only shares stories with the children, but also brings books for children to check out and return the following week. It also gives the children

something to look forward to and a time to socialize with their peers. In addition to private donations, the Hollansburg Summer Lunch Program has received food items and cash from the following businesses and organizations: New Madison Kiwanis, Downing Fruit Farm, Friends of the New Madison Library, teachers and students at Tri-Village school, and caring citizens in the community. For more information, contact Heather Brown at 997-2209 or Tony Price at 997-3675.

Children in the Hollansburg can enjoy a good lunch twice weekly for 11 weeks during the summer.

Whittaker will speak to DCRW GREENVILLE – Chief Deputy Mark Whittaker, of the Darke County Sheriff’s Department, will be speaking to the Darke County Republican Women’s Club (DCRW) on June 13. His topic is Preparing for an Active Threat Event. Organizers said, “If you haven’t heard Deputy Whittaker speak it would be well worth your time to attend. The knowledge

he will share may save your life or that of a family member.” The event will be held at Chestnut Village Center/Brethren Retirement Community. Everyone is welcome; bring your family. If you would like to join them for a 6:30 p.m. dinner, call Wavelene Denniston at 547-6477 for a reservation. If just com-

ing to hear Deputy Whittaker you should be there by 7 p.m. and a reservation isn’t needed.
