Gathering chosen as Best Summer Festival GREENVILLE – “That’s wonderful recognition for us,” stated Jenny Clark, chairman and creator of The Gathering at Garst. “We take great pride in knowing that all our hard work to make this a top quality event did not go unnoticed. I can’t begin to tell you how much work goes into something like this. The members of the Gathering committee are

dedicated to it and I personally spend countless hours trying to make sure everything is done in an organized and professional way. We are not interested in being the biggest festival; we are more interested in bringing unique, quality entertainment and vendors to the event. We want to celebrate and share our history with visitors.”

She further stated, “I always loved the museum grounds and thought it was a beautiful place. When I approached Dr. Clay Johnson, the director at Garst Museum, about bringing an event back to the museum, I had a vision of what it could be. I am happy with the success it has had and the recognition that it has brought Garst Museum.”

ENJOY THE GATHERING AT GARST

Clark concluded, “I knew it would take a strong committee that was passionate about the event and its mission. The committee members and community support we receive from volunteers and sponsors are what makes The Gathering at Garst worthy of being named Best Summer Festival in Ohio.”

A Gathering of Art comes to festival GREENVILLE – New to the Gathering at Garst this year is an artist exhibit titled: 40W by 84N a Gathering of Art. 40W by 84N is the approximate longitude and latitude of the Garst Museum and The National Annie Oakley Center. The exhibit will house the diverse works of 10 artists who will be on hand to discuss and sell their pieces. Make

certain you stop by the tent to visit with these artists and chat with them about their inspiration. Jane Dippold – Collage Paintings “I tear, cut and paste layers of hand painted paper, vintage poetry pages and sheet music, newsprint and other recycled papers using them to create the texture, pattern and the graphic elements of the artwork. I

work from 100’s of photographs I take on the back roads of Mercer County and also in my backyard garden where most of the summer, something is blooming!” Michael Glass – Paintings and Prints: “The driving force behind my art is exploration. The search for and discovery of narratives or stories, defines my perspective on life. The intent of my work can range from the composition of a simple still life to a deeper undercurrent of social matters.

I’m forever in a state of learning and observing for it is a role that well suits me.” Sterling Gregory – Pin and ink drawing, mixed media, performance art/rock balancing: “I am passionate about creating, inspiring and teaching art. I create realistic and abstract visual art in several mediums while constructing and teaching the art

The work receives a naturally colorful patina from the baking soda that flies along the flame path throughout the kiln. John Landsiedel – Painting, sculpture, mixed media: “Annie Oakley continues to be the best spokesperson for Darke County. She was the inspiration for my art for this particular event. Some of my best work is taken in the moment, capturing a memory in an instant without leaving an impact. Specifically, the one you may not remember until it’s presented in a photograph. This

philosophy informs every aspect of my art; from my work in the traditional wedding and portrait shoots into more specialized custom packages focusing on special events and requests. Overall, I enjoy working in the natural world and travel frequently to capture unique views of both urban and rural settings. As a Greenville native my family and my career are based in our community and much of my work features local wildlife, landmarks, and flora and fauna.” Millrace Potters’ Collective – Handmade pottery and sculpture: “We are four friends and potters who share a common interest –clay! Similarities in glazes and clays can be seen because we share technical information, research, experimentation, labor and at times, studios and kilns - while maintaining our own artistic identities and aesthetics. Julie Clark, Dionne Mayhew, Loretta Wray, and Rita Wiley.” Jessica Murray – Product design/photography: “Designer. Photographer. Flâneur. Francophile. Architecture and Art Lover. These words not only describe me, but they encapsulate my art as well. Having had the amazing opportunity to live in Paris for three years, I was able to use it as a base for roaming the streets of Europe with my camera. My art is a combination of those experiences and the designer in me — to bring you photographs and products that I hope will make you feel as if you

were walking along with me. Eric Roy – Abstract paintings: “I am a new arrival on the Dayton art scene. Born in Nantes, France, with an artistic soul to a family and environment with little artistic culture, I spent my childhood in Port Saint Pere, a small village in the Loire Atlantique region in France, yearning for an artistic outlet. My passion for drawing and sketching began early in childhood and grew with time, fueled only by my imagination. I took up painting seriously in 2011. Self-taught in the art of painting, and having experimented with various materials and techniques, I found my own unique style of working with acrylic on canvas and wood. Each creation is a unique expression in form and style that captures my love for movement and colors.” Andrea Starkey – Printmaking: “From the moment I fell headover-heels in love with fine art printmaking in 2009 I felt like it’s what I’m supposed to be doing, as if everything else was preparation, education and training. While compelled by all forms of printmaking, I am overwhelmingly attracted to the traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking methods, aka moku hanga, and I use these techniques throughout my printmaking process. I am as inspired by the techniques and materials and tools as I am by the images I am driven to create. Light and atmosphere, as well as the randomness of natural shapes and textures and their structures all play a role in what will be my next print.”

An event like The Gathering at Garst takes dedicated volunteers to make it happen. Since it’s inception in 2011, committee members have spent countless hours in meetings planning and implementing all of the activities that take place during the annual two-day event held on the last Saturday and Sunday in July. Every committee member’s passionate about making sure it is a success and something the community can be proud of. The Gathering attracts visitors from Ohio and neighboring states to Greenville and the Garst Museum to learn about our history and the people that make it great.

The Darke County Historical Society would like to thank the members of The Gathering at Garst Committee for all of their hard work to bring this quality event to the grounds of Garst Museum. Through their efforts, the community, county and visitors from everywhere will know and appreciate our rich history.

Greenville City Park plans island project GREENVILLE – Be sure to visit the “Friends of the Park” booth at the Gathering and find out how you can get involved in the “Treasured Island” landscaping project. Many people have fond memories of days spent in the city park. It was always a beautiful place that brought a sense of pride to Greenville residents. The park has struggled through recent hard times. The failure of the park tax levy has caused funding for many projects to be pushed back or eliminated. Through local grants and donations many projects have been completed in the Greenville City Park in the last three years, but as you visit the park today,

you will notice many things still need attention. The “Friends of the Park” will be organizing soon to start raising funds for a new project. The “Treasured Island” in the large pond is in need of some new landscaping. The Coppock Hole Trust has expressed an interest in “helping” to renew the landscaping on the island….but they cannot do it alone. The Coppock Hole Trust is a longtime supporter of community projects like this. Years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Coppock’s generous donation made much of the Greenville City Park possible. An extensive landscape design has been created and approved. It

will be on display in the booth at the Gathering. Please stop in and get a brochure and sign up to join the cause. If this project is important to you and you would like to help, they need your time, financial help, or both. If you have the time to help them organize and implement more fundraising opportunities to support this project, they invite you to join their group, “Friends

of the Park”. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to support this project, send it to Greenville City Park Office, 100 Public Square, Greenville, Ohio 45331. Please indicate on the check memo: Treasured Island Project. The Greenville City Park is one of the crown jewels of our community. Let’s make it shine again.

The lack of funds has caused this island to deteriorate, but a plan has been put together to restore it to its former glory.

Maid Rite sponsors Living History GREENVILLE – Thunderous, bone-rattling, downright earthshaking-loud is how to describe the cannon firing demonstrations by the Mad River Light Artillery at the Gathering at Garst. Make sure you visit the living history encampment and step back in time. The encampment is set up in a timeline manner dating from 17501865. Reenactor in period clothing demonstrate what life was like back in the day. Watch the blacksmith hammer iron into useful tools, the basket weaver weaving fine baskets, the box maker busy bending wood. Skilled historic craftsmen will be making copper mugs, vessels and tools made of horns and brooms. These are all unique one-of-a-kind handmade pieces of art. Native American Indians were here before the white settlers arrived. Listen to their stories of survival and daily life. Many battles took place during these times from the Revolutionary War through the Civil War. You will see what their camps were like and smell the gunpowder used to fuel their guns and cannons. Don’t hesitate to ask questions as the folks are friendly

and eager to share their knowledge with visitors. The cannon demonstrations will take place both days throughout the day along with skirmishes, and storytelling. It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no wait, it’s a drone GREENVILLE – Hovering over the tree tops at the Gathering you might see something that Lt. Commander Zachary Lansdowne would envy. If you are a student of local history you know that Lansdowne was a United States Navy officer and early naval aviator who contributed to the development of the Navy’s first lighter-than-air craft. He was born Dec. 1, 1888 in Greenville. He commanded the USS Shenandoah, which was the first rigid airship (that’s code for blimp) to complete a flight across North America. Unfortunately, he was killed in the crash of the Shenandoah. Blimps are nearly a thing of the past, but today we have drones. Although they are nothing alike in shape, size, speed or purpose,

they both turn heads when people notice them. The drone that you might see at the Gathering is owned and operated by Dan Scalf of Horizon Photography. Scalf is a Bradford resident and fulltime minister. His sideline is drone photography. The Gathering at Garst committee recently worked with Scalf to produce a video shot on location in downtown Greenville and Garst Museum Grounds. It was made to promote local history and invite people to The Gathering at Garst. You can view the video at the Gathering at Garst Facebook page.
