Eclipse was used as Highway memorial honors local fallen hero CLINTON a scam in Greenville RANDALL RYAN BERRY

GREENVILLE – Although Darke County won’t get the full effect of the solar eclipse on Monday, this area will have pretty good view the rarely seen natural occurring phenomenon. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking they are magical or have extreme power and can make the sun turn dark. You may think that it would be impossible to turn a solar eclipse into a scam, but someone did and they did here in Greenville. The conman was The Prophet (aka Tenskwatawa) and he used the con to help bolster the use of his prophetic name. Local historian Susan Gray was quick to point out the solar eclipse occurred on June 16, 1806, only 111 years ago. Governor William Henry Harrison, who would later break the Greenville Treaty, called himself an Indian fighter and did not see eye-to-eye with The Prophet. He challenged the man who became a great leader of the Shawnee to cause the sky to go black and prove he was a prophet. When The Prophet heard travelers discussing the up-

coming eclipse, he brought his followers together in the Greenville (the first of several Prophetstowns) to watch as he would cause the sky to go black. According to the book, “Greenville Commemorates The War of 1812 Peace and Friendship Second Treaty of Greenville 1814-2014,” the event “greatly increased his power as a prophet and a leader.” Before leading his devotees, The Prophet was a drunken, loud mouth, but as he grew older, Gray explained, he completely abstained from “the fire water.”

Mommy and Me Shower celebrates breastfeeding month SUSAN HARTLEY

GREENVILLE – More than 50 moms and their supporters attended the 5th annual Mommy and Me Shower hosted by the Darke County WIC program on Friday, Aug. 10. Held at Greenville City Park, the event was in support of August being Breastfeeding Awareness Month. “We’re here to support moms on their breastfeeding decisions,” said Sara Seger, breastfeeding coordinator for Darke County WIC. “We want moms to be aware of the services and the support available.” Many local organizations were in attendance at the Mommy and Me Shower, including Wayne HealthCenter’s Special Beginnings. A former delivery nurse, OBGYN educator and certified breastfeeding specialist Lori Geesaman was on hand to answer questions nursing moms may have, including sharing a handout detailing 10 steps to breastfeeding. The hospital’s birthing program, Geesaman said, not only offers childbirth classes, but also breastfeeding classes for new parents. Brian Phillips of Greenville Township Rescue also was on hand to discuss infant and child car seat safety with moms and their supporters. Other participants included representatives from the La Leche League of Darke County, Hope Jenkinson and Kristin Jones. The local La Leche League assists about 100 moms each year by providing monthly support meet-

ings as well as answering questions by phone, Jenkinson explained. “We meet the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at 323 S. Broadway,” Jenkinson said. “Moms can get encouragement and share their experiences.” Tara Crafton of Greenville has breastfed six children. Her youngest, Jasper, six months, came with his mom to the Mommy and Me Shower. Crafton said she believes breastfeeding and events such as the shower is “important because society has gotten away from breastfeeding to go to what’s easier, going to formula,” which she believes is “not better.” Other community supporters in attendance Friday included Head Start with info on Kids Learning Place childcare and preschool options; Medicaid providers Paramount, CareSource and Buckeye and professional makeup artist Sharon Kelly who provided face painting to several of the young children in attendance. Local businesses who supported the shower with baby and mommy gifts included Attitudes on Fourth, Bob Evans, The Poppy Company, Bread of Life, Brenda’s Beanery, Buckeye Health Plan, Drees Dairy Farm, Domino’s, Double M Diner, Family Health Services, Fort Wayne Zoo, Hot Head Burritos, JT’s Brew & Grill, Jumpy’s Fun Zone, KitchenAid, Las Marias, Marco’s Pizza, Merle Norman, Montage, Roots Hair Salon, Snap Fitness, Teaford’s Pizza, Subs & More, We Knead U Massage, The Whistle Stop, Vints Restaurant, and YMCA of Darke County.

DARKE COUNTY – Two F-16 Fighting Falcons assigned to Ohio Air National Guard’s 180th Fighter Wing provided a final salute to their brother in arms during a ceremony dedicating an Ohio highway to a special operations hero on Monday outside New Madison. Six miles of County Highway 121 was dedicated in Master Sgt. William L. McDaniel II’s namesake, a Special Tactics pararescueman who was killed when the MH-47 Chinook helicopter he was in crashed in the Philippines Feb. 22, 2002. “Sergeant McDaniel was living exactly what he trained to do,” said Col. Michael Martin, commander of the 24th Special Operations Wing. “That is to be part of an assault force going into an island to rescue American hostages and counter the terrorism by Abu Sayyaf. It was a tragic loss.” McDaniel was part of a joint, special operations team who were infiltrating an island in Southern Philippines. The intent was to infiltrate four teams, establish a forward operating base, collect intelligence and successfully rescue two Americans being held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group. After the fourth infiltration, the Army special forces helicopter crashed into the Sulu Sea. McDaniel, one of

his Airmen, and eight U.S. Soldiers were on board the helicopter. Nearly a 13 years later, the ground work for the highway name change was started and came to fruition in the intimate ceremony with family, friends and Special Tactics Airmen past and present. “It’s certainly an emotional day,” said Ohio State Representative Keith Faber. “It is important that we recognize people, not just when they sacrifice themselves, but every time someone drives up and down this road, they will see this sign. I think it is important that everyone remembers.” Full of humility, McDaniel did not brag on his accomplishments. He was named 2001 Pararescueman of the Year, and his family had no idea. “He never spoke of it, or boasted about it,” said his mother, Sheila McDaniel. “He was very professional.” Bill left behind three siblings - Shannon, Troy

and Dana - a wife and two sons. He was a 1983 graduate of Greenville High School. His father, William McDaniel Sr. served as an Army Paratrooper with the 82 Airborne in 1962. “As a mother, my heart will never be the same. I love all my children, but I feel I lost a part of my heart when he died,” Mrs. McDaniel added. A pararescueman’s unique technical rescue skill sets are utilized during humanitarian and combat operations; they deploy anywhere, anytime, employ air-land-sea tactics into restricted environments to authenticate, extract, treat, stabilize and evacuate injured or isolated personnel. “Bill McDaniel was a quiet professional,” said Col. Jeffrey Staha, who was McDaniel’s squadron commander in 2002. ”He was a tremendous man. All he wanted to do was

be a PJ and lead anyway he could. He would never want the attention drawn to himself, but to his teammate and squadron.” Special Tactics is the Air Force’s ground special operations force that conducts personnel recovery, global access and precision strike missions. Special Tactics Airmen hold true to a proud warrior heritage. Special Tactics Airman honor those who’ve gone before them – those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and those who continue to serve and save lives. “I felt like the dedication was a way he would be remembered for always,” Sheila McDaniel’s concluded. “Not that I would ever forget, but I want everyone else to remember him. When they drive down the road, they would say...’Wow, that’s Master Sgt. McDaniel.’”

Hughes, Townsend at the helm at GHS SUSAN HARTLEY

STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – When school resumes Monday, Aug. 28, Greenville High School students will be greeted by a couple new faces – well, sort of new. Andrea Townsend, the district’s former Director of Administrative & Pupil Personnel Services. and Stan Hughes, formerly director of the district’s Career Technology Center, were approved earlier this year to move into the two top positions at GHS Hughes moving over as principal at GHS and Townsend as the Director of the Career Technology Center. Hughes replaced retiring principal Jeff Cassell, who has since taken Townsend’s revised position at the district’s administration offices. The two new administrators met with The Early Bird on Aug. 14, to discuss the upcoming school year. Both Hughes and Townsend admitted they were excited about their new duties and had been collaborating since spring on a couple ideas they are implementing this year. On Aug. 16, a freshman orientation was held, with incoming juniors and seniors acting as core leaders. “These core leaders will run freshmen orientation and act as mentors during the school year,” Hughes explained. Townsend and Hughes

said they received input from the high school’s counselors, class advisers and teachers on which juniors and seniors to invite as core leaders. This coming school year, Hughes explained, he and Townsend may institute an application process in order to choose the core leaders for next year. One idea behind the new orientation process is to “maximize what we have here,” Townsend said. “We’re not two separate schools, we’re one school” with a number of learning opportunities available to the student body. “We’re trying to unify everything, trying to allow all groups to succeed,” Hughes explained. As part of the mentoring program, the high school will now conduct a revised homeroom schedule, which will be held each Wednesday. Opportunities for mentoring, discussing timely topics, and holding school assemblies will take place during this allotted time, Townsend explained. Topics on the agenda for discussion among the new freshmen include school pride, how to understand your GPA and how to know your way around the high school, as well as other timely topics for teens. “It makes more of an impact to hear your peers discuss these types of topics,” Hughes said. The homeroom schedule also will allow administrators

to pull seniors for example, for an assembly to discuss what they should expect for their upcoming graduation. It also will allow time for teachers to meet for collaboration opportunities. Also on the two new administrators’ agenda is keeping up with changes in education legislation coming from Columbus. For example, graduation requirements for the Class of 2018 have been revised. “And it’s our responsibility to inform the families of graduating seniors of these changes,” Townsend said. Parents and students who want to read about these changes may check out the Ohio Department of Education website at www.education.ohio.gov/Topics/OhioGraduation-Requirements/ News. The new requirements, Townsend said “allows kids to build upon their own strengths.” Hughes agreed, noting that the new options “widens

the pathway to graduation and doesn’t rely only on one interest” of a student. Townsend also said it should be noted that these requirements will affect the class of 2018 only. New requirements for the graduating class of 2019 and beyond will be announced at a later date by state legislators. In the coming months, Hughes said, the high school will be the site for a kiosk project announced this past spring. Staff, students and the public will be able to look up names of GHS graduates, teams and clubs using the kiosks, which will be placed in the main hall of the high school. The information provided through the kiosk program will be helpful to those who are interested in pursuing personal and family history information. “That’s the goal,” Hughes said, for the kiosks to be in place by the start of basketball season in November.

BRC shoe drive supports clean water GREENVILLE – Brethren Retirement Community will be supporting three area congregations in a Shoe Drive for the Waterstep Program during the month of August. Perhaps you are wondering what the Waterstep program is? Organizations (like churches and BRC) collect shoes. The shoes are then sent to Waterstep. Waterstep sells the shoes for export and inexpensive re-sale in markets around the world. But most importantly, the money collected from the shoes supports Clean Water Programs.

Waterstep works to offer clean, safe drinking water for people and living things around the world. That is the end result of collecting shoes that we no longer need! Please take a look in your closets! If you have new or gently used shoes you don’t wear anymore, consider bringing them to BRC for the Waterstep Program. They will be collecting shoes at the following drop-off locations until Aug. 31: Main lobby, hallway outside of Senior Fit, entrance area of the Chapel in the Shuff Christian Life Center, Mill Ridge Village Center, and Chestnut Village Center.

Opportunity to help the Monarch Butterfly GREENVILLE – Most of you may have seen or read that pollinator populations across the country are in decline, including the Monarch Butterfly. A reduction in the number of milkweed plants in Ohio and sur-

rounding states and a loss of wintering habitat due to logging, weather and human encroachment have contributed to the population decline of the Monarch Butterfly. There are ways that we can help, even in Darke

County. Sept. 1 through Oct. 31, the Darke Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) will be collecting seed pods from the Common Milkweed plant. The Monarch relies on the milkweed plant as a host plant, to lay eggs and as a food source. Whether as an individual, or a group, you can

make a difference in the Monarch Butterfly population by collecting these seed pods once they have matured and have turned a greenish-yellow or yellowish-brown and ready to burst open. Once collected, the seed pods will be sent away to be dried and cleaned. A portion of the seed will be sent back

to Darke County to be incorporated with other seed mixes that will be planted for pollinator species. If you would like to help, call the Darke SWCD office at (937) 548-1752, visit www. darkeswcd.com, or follow them on Facebook or Twitter to find out where
