GREENVILLE – “We have a job for just about every educational pursuit,” said Ken Hossler, Whirlpool Plant Leader. He and his staff hosted 70 Franklin Monroe sophomores Oct. 2 for National Manufacturing Day. Later he noted one of the areas where there is a need is engineering. “Nuclear engineer? Won’t work in nuclear technology but we need the engineering skills.” Hossler told the students the company will train; they look for hard workers with a good attitude. After they’ve been on the job, if they see

a posted job they would like, they can apply for it. “You can go to college while you’re working at Whirlpool… the company pays for it.” Hossler also noted the stability of Whirlpool… “With Whirlpool you don’t get laid off,” he said. The students were broken into three groups for tours. Due to the machinery noise, they were given headsets so they could hear the information provided by the guides. As in nearly all manufacturing facilities they were given safety glasses to wear. Students saw multiple products – from blenders to stand mixers and more – being built in the new 200,000 sq. ft. facility. “Makes no difference where you go – Eu-

rope, anywhere – if you see a KitchenAid product it was built right here in Greenville, Ohio,” said one of the guides. “We have to be competitive, which means our folks have to be extremely competitive,” Hossler said. “The competition is tough; we have to be flexible.” Whirlpool is the largest manufacturer of appliances in the world. The company does $20 billion in annual sales and has 20,000 employees, 10,000 of them in Ohio. Later, Hossler said he saw a number of faces in the group he thought were interested, noting the body language, facial expressions; also questions asked. “Seventy in the tour this

morning? I could use them all,” he added. The local manufacturer currently has over 1,000 employees, and has been hiring 20-45 people every quarter for the last two years. Hossler looks for creativity, innovation, a can-do mentality, team worker and a problem solver. “Today’s manufacturing is not your father’s manufacturing,” he said. “We make jobs better through technology, tools and processes. It’s more ‘finesse’ today (than in the past).” He added the company will stay competitive if its employees continue to work as a team. “It takes teamwork; we have to be better for a better tomorrow!”

March of Dimes readies for 2016 walk GREENVILLE – The March of Dimes’ March for Babies may only take a few hours to complete, but the planning that goes into making it successful begins months before. Darke County’s preparation began a few weeks ago when the Executive Leadership Team met for the first time to begin working on the 2016 March for Babies. The planning continued on October 6 when the leadership team met with many of the corporate sponsors and top givers for the 2016 Darke County March for Babies Leadership Breakfast. Kristina Knapp Bradley, of Dave Knapp Ford Lincoln and chair for the local 2016 March for Babies, welcomed guests encouraged them to help the organization reach its goal of

$110,000. Jackie Allen, division director, and Brian Hammond, community director, stressed the importance of the work March of Dimes is doing and how every baby born is affected by the research the organization has supported and continues to support. Allen pointed out March of Dimes is responsible for ultra sounds, Neonatal Intensive Care, PKU test and the 29 newborn screenings every child born in the United States undergoes. Ohio offers between 34 and 36 screenings. She also noted 1 in 8 babies in Ohio is born prematurely and nationally 1 in 9 is born early. The figures represent a $12 billion burden. Hammond said the work of five collaboratives across the country, including the I-71 corridor in Ohio that now includes Wright State University, is making a dif-

Threat at GHS was a student ‘playing around’ RYAN BERRY

MANAGING EDITOR editor@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – Greenville High School Principal Jeff Cassell says a threat found on a social media site aimed at the school and its students was not serious and the student making the threat has been disciplined. The district has a policy of not discussing the type of discipline given to students. Earlier this week, Greenville City Schools learned a threat had been posted, and although rumors have run rampant across the district as to what the threat was, Principal Cassell said there weren’t any specifics. The threat merely said something was going to happen on Tuesday, but it didn’t say what would happen. The same student followed that post with a second similar post later in

the day said it would take place third period or after. The principal and school’s resource officer called the student into his office on Tuesday and were told he/she was “just playing around.” Cassell stressed to the student those types of comments are not appropriate in this day and age. Cassell has received several calls from parents and noted some students remained fearful on Wednesday. “We want our students to feel safe. We are safe. We have a secure building,” said Cassell. He pointed out they do not take these incidents lightly and investigate everything that comes to them. While some parents questioned why a One Call was not made, Cassell accepted responsibility for that decision. “I chose not to do a One Call because that could increase the panic,” he said.

ference in trying to prevent and help children born prematurely. The money raised in Darke County helps fund these collaboratives. He encouraged the leadership breakfast attendees to form teams and come up with inventive ways to raise money for this effort. The Darke County March for Babies walk will return to its original weekend in 2016. The event will

take place on April 30 at the Darke County Fairgrounds and will include a 5 mile walk, 1 mile family fun walk, Kid Zone, breakfast and lunch, and entertainment. For more information on the Darke County March for Babies, contact Hammond at (937) 329-9274 or email bhammond@marchofdimes.org.

ofďŹ cer, the youngest was crying. The vehicle’s front windows were halfway down. Dispatch advised the mother had already been warned for child endangering in June. The ofďŹ cer spoke with the children for several minutes until the mother arrived. She said she didn’t think she could take the youngest child into the store because he was only wearing a diaper. She did not appear to be concerned about the situation. The defendant was issued a misdemeanor citation for child endangering. The ofďŹ cer also contacted Children’s Services, who advised they would follow up. DRUGS On October 8 police were dispatched to 113 Chestnut regarding a subject by a Rumpke trash can behind the complainant’s residence. The ofďŹ cer checked the area but saw no one. The ofďŹ cer made contact with the complainant, Rocky Yoder, and discovered he had a felony warrant out of Darke County Sheriff’s OfďŹ ce for Aggravated TrafďŹ cking and Illegal Assembly or Possession of Chemicals for Manufacturing. He was placed under arrest and transported to Darke County jail. On September 28 police stopped a defendant (not named in the report) who was known to not have a valid driver’s license. She told the ofďŹ cer she knew she was not valid to drive. She appeared nervous and her hands were shaking. The ofďŹ cer asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle. She said no, so the ofďŹ cer called for the K9 unit from the Darke County Sheriff’s ofďŹ ce. A positive alert was noted at the passenger side door, so the defendant was asked to exit her vehicle. The ofďŹ cer found a small black scale with white, powdery residue, a small spoon with powdery residue and

a small bag of green, leafy vegetation. The defendant said the scale was used to weigh marijuana but that her friends might have used it for cocaine. She said the spoon belongs to her children and isn’t drug related. The green leafy substance tested positive for THC/marijuana. The defendant stated she believed it was a little more than a “dime bagâ€? but that it did not belong to her. She was cited for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with an expired license. On October 5 police observed a vehicle in Greenville Park on the side of the road next to the swinging bridge. It was around 10:30 p.m. The ofďŹ cer detected an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Both occupants at ďŹ rst denied having any. After the ofďŹ cer asked the driver to step out of the vehicle, the passenger acknowledged having a small bag of a green, leafy substance, marijuana, and a “bowlâ€? (glass pipe). The defendant was issued a citation for possession of marijuana; both were advised of the park hours. On October 5 police were dispatched to CVS Pharmacy, 1009 E. Main St., regarding a suspect who left the store without paying for a bottle of vitamins. Police were given a description and advised he left on a bicycle. The suspect, ďŹ tting the exact description, was found in the 600 block of East Fourth Street. He was identiďŹ ed as David Allread. The stolen vitamins and a number of other unopened personal hygiene items were seen on him. Allread told police some items were purchased previously and he wanted to exchange the vitamins at CVS. During a pat down police found two unopened deodorants, two body wash and one syringe; all with Dollar General stickers. Dol-

lar General conďŹ rmed the items were stolen. Allread was arrested, transported to Darke County jail and cited for theft and drug abuse instruments. On October 5 police responded to a call regarding a large group of juveniles with loud music; they were throwing metal pipes at passing cars. Police observed a group of six juveniles. One juvenile had blood shot eyes, smelled like marijuana and was having difďŹ culty answering questions and completing sentences. He admitted to smoking marijuana and had a plastic baggie containing a green vegetation that smelled like and ďŹ eld tested to be marijuana/thc. The juvenile was cited for drug abuse and released to his parents. ASSAULT On October 1 police received a call about an active assault on Washington Avenue. Dispatch advised the victim was “highly elevated and it was difďŹ cult to get information from her.â€? The victim claimed the suspect was on drugs. When the police arrived, the suspect was sitting outside on the front porch. He introduced himself and said he did not touch the victim, noting she was a heroin addict. He said he lives at this residence with a relative; the caller, while she comes and goes, does not. The suspect said he told her she was not welcome because of her heroin addiction, and said she yelled at him and was â€œďŹ‚ipping out.â€? He asked her to leave; she refused and called the police. He did not appear to be under the inuence of anything. The victim said a relative owns the house and is out of town; she was asked to watch it because the suspect is on drugs and lets “troubledâ€? people in. She admitted the suspect lived there. She had brought her 11-year-old son with her while she checked the

house and sat down with him to eat some fast food. The suspect had awakened and when he saw her he became violent because he did not want her there. She said she would not leave until she cleaned the house. She said the suspect grabbed her by the shirt, threw her down, called her names and said he was going to “beat her ***â€? with a stick until she left. He went outside to get the stick and she locked the doors. She said he re-entered through a window in his room, ran at her and shoved her down. He blocked her as she tried to move, so she called police. The victim had a long red mark on the right side of her neck. The suspect said he didn’t know about the red marks, that “she probably did that herself.â€? He acknowledged she’d locked him out and he’d crawled through his window. He said “it was his house and he did.â€? The victim got a laundry basket of clean clothes for her and her son and left. Another relative said both have drug issues and that the suspect does have violent tendencies. She also didn’t know why the victim would be “stayingâ€? there as she has her own house. The ofďŹ cer reported he thought he got partial truth from both victim and suspect. He will forward the report to the Prosecutor for review. EARLY BIRD POLICY The Greenville Police Beat is prepared from public records available at the Greenville Police Department. Every effort is made to balance the public’s right to know with the rights of the individuals involved. Readers are encouraged to contact Greenville Police if they have information or concerns regarding these or any other incidents they see. The Early Bird notes all suspects are innocent until proven guilty and welcomes comments and concerns regarding this community service.

for two counts of Rape, ďŹ rst degree felonies, and three counts of Sexual Battery, felonies of the third degree. He was charged with these incestuous crimes after a tipster informed authorities about Frame being the biological father of three children with a family member. Following an interview with the 25year-old victim about the allegations, they discovered that Frame had allegedly forced her into having sex multiple times in 2007. The crimes reportedly occurred while the pair lived in Bradford until recently moving to Mercer County. Frame allegedly impregnated the family member at least three times, according to Darke

County Prosecuting Attorney R. Kelly Ormsby, III. A 6-year-old child was found living with them when Mercer County Sheriff’s OfďŹ ce made the arrest last week. The child was removed from the home while the investigation continues. It was also learned that a 2-year-old child was previously given up for adoption and the daughter had just given birth to the third child allegedly conceived by Frame. “I’ve never handled a case quite like this,â€? Ormsby stated. “It’s shocking is about all I can say.â€? In addition to the case in Mercer County, Frame faces up to 37 years behind bars in Darke County. His arraignment date is not yet scheduled.

Pumpkin Show Prince and Princess BY RYAN BERRY MANAGING EDITOR editor@earlybirdpaper.com

BRADFORD – Five boys and 16 girls between the ages of 6 and 11 took part in the first parade of the 87th annual Bradford Pumpkin Show before nervously taking the stage to compete in the 2015 Prince and Princess Contest. Every child appearing was well deserving of the prize, but in the end the judges chose Celinda ShadeCradduck, a very talkative six year old, and Blake Addis, 10, a fifth grade student at Franklin Monroe, as this year’s princess and prince. The theme for this year’s contest was “What I did Last Summer.” The contestants dressed in costumes representing the fun they had over the sum-

mer. Some were dressed in fishing garb, a couple of contestants dressed like actors in the Dixie Stampede, others dressed as though they were heading for the beach; there were a couple of participants in their best wedding clothes and one girl dressed like a skater girl – complete with a broken arm she got while learning to skateboard. Celinda, a Miami East student, stole the show to earn the top prize. She kept the audience laughing with her answers and mannerisms. Emcee Michelle Lavy, a kindergarten teacher at Bradford, said, “I bet your teachers love you.” Celinda responded with a long drawn-out, “Well…” She continued, “I do get in a teensy bit of trouble.” Lavy asked, “For

talking?” The charismatic six-year old responded, “My grandpa does call me a jabber jaw.” Blake, dressed like a farmer, was well spoken and shared his accomplishments at the State and Darke County Fair. He explained one of his projects included helping his parents and grandparents in the garden. Joining Celinda and Blake on the Prince and Princess court were first runners-up Ava Whitford and Lance Poeppelman and second runners-up Sarah Beckstedt and Ryan Hocker. Costume winners were Caylee Bates and Blake Addis. Float winners were Caylee Bates (first), Jaylynn Wilburn (second), and Ellie Richards (third).

School officials took the threat seriously and safely evacuated all students to the football field away from the school. Darke County deputies completed a thorough

search of the entire school. No persons, suspicious packages or devices were found. School officials made the decision to continue classes for the remainder of the school day. Similar threats have been made recently across the Miami Valley. This incident remains under investigation.

NEW MADISON – “Only one time I can remember that we ever got rained out,” said an announcer. “That was less than ten years ago and… it was (really) raining!!!” This year it wasn’t raining, at least not at the moment. It was drizzling. It was windy and the temperature was in the 40’s. That didn’t stop Patriot supporters from turning out for the annual Tri-Village School & Community Fair parade, however. Was it too cold? Not according to some. One student said it will be too cold when it hits minus 20 degrees. Another said she didn’t care how cold it was, but if it started snowing she was heading back to the school. Robin Houp, who came from Florida to be with her father, Palestine Grand Marshal Herb Saylor, said minus 10 degrees would be too cold… she admitted it was probably because she was used to the warmer

weather down south. One comment had to do with the strong community support New Madison had for Tri-Village. “Some are already fighting it (colds), others are just getting over it… others just don’t care,” she said. And the weather didn’t stop people from joking… “Having fun yet?” Absolutely. “Then you’re ahead of us!” came the reply. Dixie Robbins noted the candy lying in the street due to a lack of enough kids to pick

it all up. “He just told me to fly my broom over there and sweep it up,” she said indignantly. That’s okay. She was laughing. At exactly 11 a.m., just as it had in years past, the fair parade began… a little over a half hour later, it wrapped up. Fair celebrants moved on to food and events that could be held inside; other events had to be cancelled due to the weather. A scheduled bonfire and pep rally was cancelled Friday night due to the wind.

Grant helps Family Health boost services WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) recently announced $2,425,658 for organizations in western Ohio to help expand access to primary care and boost services at local health centers. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded the funding. “Local health centers are critical access points for Ohioans in need of quality, affordable health care,” said Brown. “Funding from the health law helps keep open community health centers so more families can access their primary and preventive care. These awards will allow centers to hire more health providers, improve facilities, and enroll more Ohioans in health care coverage.”

Locally, Family Health Service of Darke County, Inc., received $1,000,000 through Health Infrastructure Investment Program. The funding comes from the Health Center Expanded Services fund and the Health Infrastructure Investment Program. The Health Center Expanded Services fund – made possible through the Affordable Care Act – will help increase access to medical, oral, behavioral, pharmacy, and vision care. It will also support outreach and enrollment activities to help more individuals enroll in health care coverage. The Health Infrastructure Investment Program allows health centers to renovate or acquire new health center clinical space to help meet community needs.

Defund Planned Parenthood We are all shocked by the videos of Planned Parenthood selling aborted babies. JIM BUCHY OHIO This is an REPRESENTATIVE unconscionable act that should not be tolerated. Governor Kasich led the legislature in opposing the work of Planned Parenthood in Ohio long before these videos surfaced. Planned Parenthood is the number one provider of abortions in America. They operate under the facade of providing women’s healthcare. Since 2011, in Ohio we have enacted a number of bills to stop Planned Parenthood and to eliminate abortions. In Ohio, no longer are qualified health plans allowed to provide healthcare coverage for abortions with state and local tax dollars. Under the leadership of Governor John Kasich, we implemented bills prohibiting the use of tax dollars to pay for the costs, premiums, or any other charges of an abortion. In 2013, House Bill 59 required tax dollars to be allocated to programs that had the primary focus on promoting childbirth, not abortion. State resources were redirected from abortion providers to clinics that do not advocate for abortion. More recently, the Heartbeat Bill was passed in the House of Representatives, prohibiting an abortion once a heartbeat is detected. Generally this happens around eight weeks of pregnancy. The bill is now in the Senate for further consideration. In the latest budget the abortion clinic in Toledo was shut down because the clinic had no medical agreement with any hospital within thirty miles. It did not take disturbing videos for Ohio law makers to take strong stances against abortion. Currently the legislature is working to pass the Abortion- Inducing Drug Safety Act. This bill

expands the regulation of the drugs used when inducing an abortion. The bill is being reviewed by the Committee of Community and Family Advancement. The Pain Capable Act has been referred to the same committee and will outlaw abortion when an unborn baby has the ability to feel pain, around twenty weeks of pregnancy. The Down syndrome Non-Discrimination Act stops the abortion of a baby who is diagnosed with Down syndrome through prenatal screenings. I co-sponsored this bill because defending the life of an unborn baby is a priority of mine. House Bill 294 was introduced by Representatives Bill Patmon and Margaret Conditt, and the bill has been assigned to the Committee of Community and Family Advancement. In House Bill 294, there is an unfamiliar term known as an “elective abortion.” What exactly is an “elective abortion?” We do not need judicial activists defining our laws. I will support any bill that prohibits the killing of babies. This bill needs scrutiny to determine what an “elective abortion” is and its impact on stopping abortion. Defunding Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion organizations is a step in the right direction. Legislation enacted beginning in 2011 to stop abortion has decreased the number of abortions in Ohio; however, there is still work to be done. We will continue to work diligently on legislation that stops Planned Parenthood and ensures fewer babies will be aborted. Please give me your opinion on this topic and other issues in the news by completing a brief online survey at tinyurl.com/ buchyoctober2015.

I Don’t Want to Find a Dead Body

I think I have written previously about my fear of snakes. I wouldn’t even call it a complete fear of snakes – I’m just afraid of the fast ones, poisonous or not. If I think I can outrun it I don’t fear it as much. Boa constrictors, pythons…they look slow. Garter snakes, on the other hand, give me the willies. I know boa constrictors and pythons can do more damage than a garter snake, but I would exit a backyard or jump off a riding lawnmower faster than Usain Bolt going for a gold medal if a little snake were to slither in front of me. Unfortunately, that’s not a hypothetical statement. I do have one other major fear. I could never work in a hospital or in a nurs-

am I kidding? She’s been a pain in the butt. She’s still part of the family. She’s like that uncle you have to accept as family. You hope doesn’t show up at the family reunion, but when he’s gone you’ll have all of these great stories about him. I know one of these days in the not too distant future, I’m going to be the one to find her. I will have to touch her, move her and bury her. I get the willies just thinking about it. I don’t want to find dead animals or deal with them even if they aren’t family pets, but that seems to happen all too often. Yes, I have an example. My oldest daughter ran out of clothes not too long ago and took the laundry downstairs. Since she only did her clothes I knew I would need to do a load for the rest of us. Once again she only did it halfway. I had to take the clothes out of the washing machine and

put them in the dryer. I got down to the very bottom and noticed a fuzz ball. I looked closer trying to figure out what it was. Then it dawned on me. It was the mouse my youngest had seen scurrying across the living room floor a day or two prior. I could have handled finding the dead mouse if it would have been in its natural setting – the mouse trap I set. I found a used dryer sheet and picked up its lifeless body by the tail, brought it upstairs while trying not to vomit and threw it into the yard. I was hoping the stray cat would find it and I wouldn’t have to see it anymore. I thought my oldest would have freaked out about carrying the mouse downstairs in the clothes she picked up off the floor, but she was more heartbroken she drowned the little mouse I was trying to kill.

ing home because of this fear. I never, ever, not in a million years want to find a dead body. Most people would probably fear being the dead body, but not me. As long as I don’t have to find myself after I’ve died, I’m okay. It’s not full-on necrophobia. I can handle death to some degree. I don’t have a problem viewing a dead body in its natural setting – a funeral home. My fear of finding dead bodies doesn’t end with humans. I don’t like finding dead animals either (unless they’re snakes). I don’t want to touch them, move them or bury them. We’ve had our share of rabbits, dogs, birds and gold fish die and I’ve been forced to shake off my fear and handle the situation. I try my best to “act like a man,” but inside I’m totally freaking out. We have a dog that will soon turn 13 years old. She has lived a good life and has been a loyal pet. Who

It has come to my attention that our troubled school district will have 3 vacancies on the School Board this December. And, there are 4 individuals running for the upcoming November election to fill these 3 positions. Our school district has had a very rocky road over the past several years, and it seems to me that the school board is allowing mismanagement to become the status quo. We desperately need fresh blood on our board. However, after learning about the candidates, I do not feel any more relieved. Of the 4, one is a current board member. Obviously,

because of the current climate of the board, reelection of a current member is not a smart option. This is where I pause, and urge voters in this school district to do your research on the remaining candidates. I have done mine and I am still digging. There has been concerning information found on each of the remaining 3 that put their morals at question. Do we want more board members with weak morals being in control of our children’s education? I hope this causes some discussion and that the right people will be elected to save our district from more chaos. Jeff Martin Pitsburg

Will You Be Ready for Retirement?

National Save for Retirement Week is observed Oct. 18 – 24 this year. And this week has some weight behind it, as it is recognized by the U.S. Senate for its importance in encouraging Americans to prepare themselves financially for retirement. Are you doing all you can? Many of your peers aren’t. About a third of working adults have no retirement savings or pension, according to a survey by the Federal Reserve. And more than half of workers report that the total value of their household’s savings and investments, excluding the value of their primary home and any defined benefit plan (such as a traditional pension), is less than $25,000, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute’s 2015 Retirement Confidence Survey. Such figures help explain why many people are unsure if they’ll ever be able to retire. Nearly 40% of the respondents in the Federal Reserve’s study either have no intention to retire or plan to keep working for as long as possible. Of course, if you enjoy your career, or just simply like to work, you may be in no hurry to retire. But you may want to put yourself in a position someday when work is optional – not mandatory. To reach that point, consider taking these steps: Estimate your cost of retirement. At what age do you plan to retire? When you do retire, will you stay home and pursue your hobbies, or will you travel the world? Will you do some consulting or other parttime paid work, or will you volunteer? By answering these and other questions, you can at least estimate

your costs during your retirement years. Contribute to your 401(k). Contribute as much as you can afford each year to your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k). At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. A 401(k) or similar plan is a great way to put money away for retirement, because your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. And you may have a dozen or more investment vehicles within your 401(k), so you can build a portfolio that’s appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance. In 2015, you can contribute up to $18,000 to your 401(k), or $24,000 if you’re 50 or older. Fully fund your IRA. Even if you participate in a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, you’re probably still eligible to contribute to an IRA as well. In 2015, you can contribute up to $5,500 – or $6,500, if you’re 50 or older – to an IRA. A traditional IRA offers taxdeferred earnings, while Roth IRA earnings can grow tax free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. Plus, you can fund your IRA with virtually any type of investment you choose. Try to “max out” your IRA every year. Control your debts. Control your debts as much as possible. Every dollar that doesn’t go into a debt payment could be invested for your retirement. These aren’t the only steps that can help you move toward a comfortable retirement – but they can certainly help get you on the right path.

DCCA Coffeehouse Series features duet GREENVILLE – Darke County Center for the Arts will present Adelee and Gentry in concert at The Bistro Off Broadway on Oct. 29; the show begins at 7 p.m. The sisters from West Alexandria who have become rising stars on the Nashville music scene are part of DCCA’s Coffeehouse Series which offers high quality artists performing in an inviting, comfortable setting where food and drink are available for purchase. DCCA ofďŹ cials note that the originally announced date and venue for this concert have been changed; those who have already purchased their tickets should soon receive replacements in the mail with the correct date and place. “These girls are truly riding a rocket to success,â€? said DCCA Artistic Director Keith Rawlins. “Because of other opportunities opening up for them, they requested that we push back the date of our show, and we were happy to accommodate them,â€? Rawlins explained. According to Rawlins, Adelee and Gentry, who have been performing together for the past ďŹ ve years, have a polished folk-pop sound elevated by their uniquely captivating style of two part harmony. “Their music is real and honest; they love being storytellers and pour their hearts into their songs,â€? Rawlins stated. When asked to list artists who have inuenced their sunny pop sound, Adelee and Gentry name Adele, Sara Bareilles, and Ingrid Michaelson. The girls, who grew up in a musical fam-

Library will screen Cat People on Oct. 15 GREENVILLE – The Greenville Public Library’s “Third Floor Film Seriesâ€? will be screening the suspenseful 1942 horror ďŹ lm Cat People in October. Librarian David Nilsen says, “As the autumn leaves y around in the chilly darkness outside, attendees will watch a ďŹ lm that helped to elevate the horror genre from b-picture status to artistic legitimacy.â€? Directed by Jacques Tourneur, the ďŹ lm tells the story of a young woman (French actress Simone Simon) living in New York City. She falls in love with a man and agrees to marry him, but on their wedding night refuses to sleep with him. She tells him a legend about the Serbian village she is from, a legend about a curse that turns the women of her village

into vicious wild cats when they are upset or aroused. Because she loves him, she refuses to consummate the marriage, fearing what will happen. Time passes, and her husband strays. Myth and reality blur and blood is shed. The ďŹ lm blends the genres of ďŹ lm noir and horror, layering the visual style and mood of noir over top the fantastical and haunting narrative elements of a horror movie. It works both as light entertainment and a delicate commentary on female repression. Make plans to join them on Oct. 15, 7 p.m., as they screen this moody and intriguing ďŹ lm. Coffee, soft drinks, candy, and popcorn will be available free of charge, and Nilsen will be leading a brief discussion after the ďŹ lm.

Emerson sentenced for 2014 overdose death of wife BY CLINTON RANDALL STAFF WRITER crandall@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – Darke County Common Pleas Court Judge Jonathan P. Hein ordered 46-year-old Raymond R. Emerson to serve 60 days in jail and 60 months on probation Monday morning. A jury held Emerson responsible for the overdose death of his wife in January 2014. According to the investigation, on Jan. 18, 2014 Emerson supplied his wife (Angela) with a Fentanyl patch at their home in Arcanum… that caused a fatal overdose. He was originally indicted on one count each of Involuntary Manslaughter, a first degree felony; and Corrupting Another with Drugs, a second degree felony. The manslaughter charge was dismissed prior to the start of the jury trial on Aug. 4. The jury convicted Emerson on the Corrupting Another with Drugs charge, but was later amended by the judge following a motion from defense attorney James S. Detling. The motion stated that not enough evidence was provided to the jury during trial to convict Emerson of a Schedule 2 controlled substance. Judge Hein agreed with this motion, lowering the conviction to a fourth degree felony. “This was a young woman who had multiple overdoses prior to this overdose,” Darke County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Deborah S. Quigley stated during Monday’s sentencing. “He (Raymond Emerson) knew her history of Fentanyl overdoses. After he applied the patch on this day… he simply walked away.” Quigley brought up the fact that Emerson is a former nurse which should have led to him paying closer attention to his wife after administering the strong opiate narcotic. She recommended that he receive a prison term of one year. Emerson read a prepared statement during Monday’s hearing. He not only blamed himself for her death, but also the doctors, friends and family. “I failed my wife! Not getting her the help she needed sooner will haunt me for the rest of my days,” Emerson emotionally read aloud. “I pray for her family and their loss. I wish something could have been done in the five years of Angie’s downward spiral.” An emotional Angela’s mother, Janice Miller, addressed the court and Emerson during Monday’s hearing.

“I miss my daughter everyday,” Miller said. “Now she is gone and I will never see her again.” Judge Hein stated his disappointment with how the case was handled during the investigation. He explained how the errors in the evidence made it unfair on the jury to determine the verdict in the case. According to Detling, the defense will be filing an appeal for the conviction and requested that Emerson’s sentence execution be postponed until the appeal is complete. Judge Hein denied the motion, but did grant several firearms be released to Detling that were confiscated by the Arcanum Police Department following Emerson’s arrest. Emerson plans to have the weapons sold to help pay for his

case-related fees. In addition to the 60 days in jail and up to five years community control sanction, Emerson was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and pay a $5,000 economic sanction. If he fails to comply with the sentencing, he faces up to 15 months in prison. He was taken into custody immediately following Monday’s hearing.

It’s very good to be home.” The reunion on the field took place just a couple of hours after Private First Class Donthnier had arrived back in Greenville with the surprise meeting arranged on short notice between Shalissa Donthnier the mother of the two siblings and Greenville varsity girls soccer coach Steve Shepard. “I’m so glad we got to be a part of this,” said an emotional Coach Shepard. “We can’t thank the soldiers enough. When Mo’s (Moreah) mom texted me about doing it… I sure was happy to be part of it because this is special.” “I was planning on surprising but just not quite at this magnitude,” said Donthnier. “This got

GREENVILLE – High schools across the nation, and around the world, will receive a commemorative Wilson Golden Football for every player or head coach who graduated from their school and was on an active Super Bowl roster. One of the more unique ways the NFL will be celebrating Super Bowl 50 is by sending a gold football to every high school in the world that’s produced a player or coach who’s appeared in a Super Bowl. The NFL estimates that over 3,000 players have played in the Super Bowl, along with 52 coaches. The league will invite some of the 3,000 players to personally deliver the gold footballs to their individual high schools. Matt Light started in five Super Bowls for the New England Patriots and protected quarterback Tom Brady’s blind side for all three Super Bowl wins. “This is a great honor,” said Greenville native Matt Light. “I’m excited to share this with Greenville

Schools, my family and friends.” Greenville schools will also be eligible for a $5,000.00 grant from NFL as part of the 50th year celebration according to Light. Former Green Wave football player Matt Light and his wife will be in town at Greenville’s final home game of the 2015 season, Oct. 30 to present the commemorative gold football to his alma mater for the school’s trophy case. “Growing up in Greenville and playing peewee football, junior high football and high school football helped launch my Purdue University and NFL football career.” While driving through the mountains of New Hampshire with his family, Light confirmed with The Early Bird that he and his wife will attend the presentation of the Gold Football. Light also shared New England Patriots Head Football Coach Bill Belichick has donated $10,000 to the Friends of Harmon Field from the Bill Belichick Foundation. The

donation will help kick-off the new fund raising campaign for the new Green Wave football stadium and sports complex. “This comes at the best

time for the Friends of Harmon Field,” said Light. “How often do you get to build a new high school stadium. Very Exciting.”

644 WAGNER AVENUE, GREENVILLE

GREENVILLE – A few months ago, Chris Norris, who is an officer with the Greenville Township Fire Dept., was working with local VFW representatives in trying to secure the equipment needed for memorial services and funerals for the rescue and fire departments in the county. At that time, the emergency services group received a very special donation from the Greenville VFW Post 7262, Ohio Charities Fund – a complete set of color guard presentation flags. When working with the VFW – Norris discovered a need among the VFW members – they were using wooden stands for their presentation of the organizations flags, when going into schools and community events. The wood was showing a lot of wear and they were going to have to construct new ones. Norris, then contacted a friend, Jim Troutwine, who he built target shooting stands with previously.

The concept was relatively the same – a steel stand, with self-supporting legs and something to support a wooden stake…or even a flag pole. Together, they designed and fabricated tubular steel stands… with holders for the flag poles. They made one stand to hold four flags and two stands that hold three flags each. So depending upon the need, they could use any combination of the stands for what the VFW’s was presenting… with the maximum display number at any one time is 10. According to Troutwine, the project took a good 3040 hours of his own time to complete. He and Norris also fabricated a special tubular steel flag holder for Robert Foster, of the VFW and Darke County Disabled Veterans, which holds four flags, and is used in his trailer hitch receiver. The holder’s purpose is so that the flags can be displayed securely during area parades.

Pictured with the new flag holder stand from left to right are – Fred Dean, Surgeon VFW Post 7262; Robert Foster, the 2nd District Commander of the Darke County Disabled Veterans #Chapter 57; Jim Troutwine and Chris Norris. (Clinton Randall photo)

“It is so nice to have new these new stands,” Foster said. “We really appreciate all their hard work and wanting to donate their time for this.” Donations of tubular steel were received from First Rate Industries in Hollansburg and round steel piping from local plumbing contractor Ron Denlinger of Gettysburg. Troutwine and Norris purchased all of the assembly hardware, primer

and paint for the project. After Troutwine completed the fabrication, Norris primed, painted and assembled the stands. They both are supporters of those serving in the military, as they have been shipping care packages to our men and women in the military almost every month since 2009. This is just one more way that they can ‘give back’ to the people that serve our great Country.

CELINA – Bearcreek Memories Dinner Theater in Celina, OH is presenting Country Music Legend Mickey Gilley on Oct. 23 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Gilley has accomplished what most artists only dream of — a long and fulfilling career marked by loyal fans and financial success. One of the secrets behind Mickey’s longevity is his ability to balance the heart of an entertainer with the brain of a businessman. He hasn’t had to “reinvent”

himself to stay in the game. He has stayed current with the times, but Mickey knows what not to change. He has treated his fans with the same respect throughout the years, maintained his consistent high-quality performances, selected classic songs that withstood the fickleness of trends and tapped into business opportunities with an uncanny foresight. He scored his first string of consecutive numberone hits in the mid-’70s

— “Roomful of Roses,” “I Overlooked An Orchid,” “City Lights,” “Window Up Above,” “Don’t The Girls All Get Prettier At Closing Time” and “Bring It On Home To Me.” He performed traditional honkytonk songs long before the style returned to favor in Nashville. In the ‘80s, he became a smooth crooner of country love songs. In all, Mickey has achieved a remarkable 39 Top-Ten country hits, with 17 of those songs reaching the No. 1 spot on the country

charts. Buffet & Show tickets and Show-Only tickets are available. Gold seating is $55. Silver Seating is $45. Add a buffet for $14. Buffet is provided by Romer’s Catering. Tickets are available by phone by calling reservations at 567-510-0096 or online at www.bearcreekmemories.com. Bearcreek Memories Dinner Theater is located at 3769 US 127 S, Celina, OH at Romer’s Overdrive location.

Harrison, Majority kids teach drug prevention skills BOB ROBINSON

ASSOCIATE EDITOR brobinson@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – Recovery & Wellness Centers of Midwest Ohio isn’t just about recovery and wellness (from drug and alcohol abuse)… it’s also about prevention. Kelly Harrison, Prevention Specialist, is teaching “Incredible Years” to Kindergartners in Ansonia… Life Skills to Arcanum seventh graders… And Safe Dates to eighth grade students at Greenville Junior High School. She offers the same programs at the same grade levels to many Darke County campuses. While the approach may be different, they all have one goal: prevention… prevention from the onset of drug and alcohol abuse. From one day to the next she can also be at Tri-Village, Woodland Heights or any of the other districts. “Prevention efforts have streamlined in recent years,” she said. “(The approach is) to identify the best practices for supporting our youth.” Harrison reaches about 400 students during a school year. She teaches refusal skills, coping with stress, good decision making, dealing with peer pressure and positive communication. She also educates students about drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Harrison also mentors

the “We Are the Majority” group in Darke County. It includes students from local high schools who are “committed to a drug and alcohol free lifestyle.” Harrison noted “that’s true for most kids,” also that the group continues to grow. The Majority kids tutor young people from East School. They help them with their homework, and they tie the life skills programs she teaches to community activities and events. The program is open and free to all Darke County students. Any student interested in helping (or needing help) can contact her at 548-6842. She offers similar advice to parents. “It’s important for parents to talk to their kids when they’re young,” she said. “It’s key to drug and alcohol prevention. Parents can contact the agency here for resources to help them.”

Community Connectors gears up for at-risk kids BOB ROBINSON

ASSOCIATE EDITOR brobinson@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – “The barriers some of these kids face would never occur to most of us,” said Jeff Vaughn, Director of Gateway Youth Programs. He’s putting together the needed pieces for the Community Connectors Program – a one-year grant (requiring a local match) by the state of Ohio – but that doesn’t remove all the barriers atrisk young people face. One young man has no driver’s license, no Social Security card… he went to get a drug test for an internship but they wouldn’t do it because he had no identification. “We know he was born in Darke County so we will get the birth certificate,” Vaughn said. “He was upset and disappointed… I told him we’ll get it taken care of.” He noted another case where the girl wants to work but can’t. “She’s pregnant. If she goes to work she has no insurance.” If she stays unemployed, the state pays for it. Vaughn acknowledged the system wasn’t necessarily set up for success. He works with youth individually where he can; Community Connectors will ideally reach at riskkids before they reach that point… while they’re still in high school. In his Community Connectors grant application

Vaughn asked for $176,178 to put three Family Mentor/Youth Advocates in place to help students at Tri-Village, Mississinawa Valley and Greenville High Schools. Due to the number of applications to the program, the state couldn’t fund the requested amount. Gateway received $89,716. Vaughn used the grant to fund Youth Advocates for Tri-Village and Mississinawa Valley. Ashley Stonerock is already in place at Mississinawa Valley. After week four she has identified and is working with 17 kids. Amanda Dyson will be starting at Tri-Village on Oct. 19. They both will be targeting kids for oneon-one mentoring, as well as work readiness efforts. Vaughn said he’s also targeting kids in Gateway Youth’s ACES program. The Family Mentor/ Youth Advocates are Component 1. Component 2 is the one-on-one mentoring. Vaughn said that isn’t limited to two school districts. “Big Brothers Big Sisters is partnering with us to provide mentors and do the screening for us… however we are still looking for mentors. Call me at 548-8002.” Component 3 is the business partnership. “We have a great list of business partners,” Vaughn said, “but we still need more. We need strong community support if we want to keep this program going.”

MANAGING EDITOR editor@earlybirdpaper.com

BRADFORD – On Oct. 7, the Bradford Pumpkin Show held its annual Queen’s Night festivities. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Miss Pumpkin Queen. Hometown girl and crowd favorite Mandi Bates earned the title over 13 other girls from Bradford and area schools. Bates, the daughter of Michelle and Curtis Enis, is a junior at Bradford High School (BHS). The timing on her decision to enter the contest left her little time to prepare. She said she was asked by her sponsor and employer, Weldy’s Dairy Bar, on Sunday if she would be interested. When the owners’ grandchildren decided they didn’t want to be in the pageant they asked Bates again on Tuesday, the day before the pageant. She jumped

at the chance. While most girls have time to mull over their choices for the perfect dress, Bates had less than 24 hours. Once again her decision paid off as she took the top spot for Best Evening Gown. Joining Bates in the Miss Pumpkin Queen’s Court are Alyssa Roberts, BHS, first runner-up, and Kelly Moore, BHS, second runner-up. Paige Sloan, of Tri-Village, was named Miss Congeniality. The title was voted on by the all of the contestants. Maria Vernon, BHS, was named Miss Photogenic. The title was judged by Sierra Puttoff of Danielle Hill Photography. All of the contestants had two opportunities to make an impression on the judges with the hope of making it into the top 10 and an opportunity to win the title. The contestants met with the judges earlier in the day for a five minute interview and again in

front of hundreds of onlookers. Emcee Scott Ward asked each of the girls a question that was randomly drawn. The top 10 were each asked the same question for their final judging. In addition, to the Queen’s Court, the top 10 included Cailin Litten, BHS; Paige Sloan, Tri-Village; Kirsten Harmon, BHS; Cheyenne Park, UVCC/BHS; Kailee Brower, BHS; Courtney Addington, UVCC/BHS; and Danielle Swabb, Covington High School (CHS). The other candidates were Ally Booker, BHS; SaraBeth Anderson, CHS; Tatyana Cotrell, BHS; and Maria Vernon, BHS. Prior to the Miss Pumpkin Queen Contest, the main stage hosted the crowning of the Little Miss and Master Pumpkin. The contest was open to children ages 2-5. Judging was held earlier in the day with the winners being named after the evening’s parade. Two year old Layne

New T-V royalty picked for 2015-16 NEW MADISON – Four young people were crowned at the 82nd Annual TriVillage Community and School Fair Oct. 2. Judges tapped Braxton Bales and Ava Camacho as the Little Mr. & Miss Patriot for 2015-16; while TVHS students voted seniors Knox Morris and Jenna Fisherback as the new School Fair King & Queen. During the interview Braxton, the son of Dustin and Lauren Bales, told Emcee Kami Hollinger

his favorite animal was a big ‘gator and his favorite thing to do was ride his big truck into the woods and get it stuck. Ava, daughter of Matt and Amber Camacho, said her favorite animal was the zebra; she performed the Pledge of Allegiance for the audience and finished the interview with a rousing ‘Go Patriots’. Two additional candidates for the Fair Queen honor were Aubrey Light, daughter of David and Abby Light, and Kinnley Lewis, daughter of Jarred and Amy Lewis. Hollinger was kept on her toes by the young folks who, for the

most part, seemed to have minds of their own. The School Fair King and Queen candidates were presented to the audience about a half hour later. The Tri-Village High School Band performed during the entrance of the candidates as well as later in the program. Also performing was the Tri-Village High School Chorus. The 201516 Community Fair King and Queen had been voted on earlier in the year. Representing the Freshman class were Breanna Locke and Corbin Holzopfel, the sophomore class Morgan Sparks and Cam-

ren Munchel, and the junior class Payge Malott and Josh Wiford. During the program three Grand Marshals were recognized. The New Madison Grand Marshal was Joe Eliker, Palestine Grand Marshal was Herb Saylor and Hollansburg Grand Marshal was Wyoneda Stephens. Saylor had a special treat in store for him… a surprise ‘drop in’ by his daughter from Florida, Robin Houp. She flew in to be with him for the honor. He was unaware. “He’s such a sweet man,” said Dixie Robbins, “he’ll probably cry.” He did.

Exchange your 9-Volt Battery before Nov. 6 4-6 p.m., at the Arcanum Fire Department; and Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, 9 a.m. to noon, at the Osgood Fire Department. The exchange is also available until Nov. 6 at the following locations – City of Greenville Fire Department, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday

through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Darke County Solid Waste District and Darke County Homeland Security/EMA; and 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Union City, Ohio Fire Department.

Acres of Caring is seeking families

Dan Young is shown in 2007 with daughters Katie and Autumn and Richard Halley in front of the Library.

Young gives program on composting GREENVILLE – Join the Greenville Public Library for an informative presentation on “Composting” by Dan Young on Oct. 22, 6:30-7:30 p.m., in the upstairs meeting room. Young will discuss the benefits of using and creating your own compost to enhance soil condition and replenish nutrients to your garden and lawn. He says “Give your soil that extra initiative to produce by adding organic compost.” Refreshments will be served. Young is the owner of Fresh Aire Farms, 1324 Wasson Road, Union City, Ohio.

When construction was about to begin on the library expansion in 2007, Young donated many truckloads of high-quality organic compost, topsoil, and mulch to help protect the trees. He did so again in 2008 to replenish the soil before landscaping. The Young family also raises certified organic, grass-fed beef and lamb, as well as grows small grains such as corn, soybeans, wheat, and sunflower seeds. Another aspect of their business is wood and yard waste recycling. The Young’s can be reached at 968-3423.

Authors hold book signing GREENVILLE – Marilyn J. (Lease) Fritz and Betty J. (Lease) Brodrick, are pleased to announce the release of Charlotte’s Bell, A Royal Tragedy. This novel contains the true facts of Darke County’s most cruel crime, which resulted in one of Greenville’s most pathetic court scenes ever. According to Fritz and Brodrick, the ultimate ending of this story is the presence of Greenville’s

most economic business area of Northtown. Here, she lived by God’s word and was a missionary of the Wakefield Lutheran Church. She sacrificed her life protecting her family upon the street called Lease Avenue. A book signing will be held Oct. 17, at KT Plum International Food & Gifts, in the Sherwin Williams Building on North Broadway, 2-4 p.m.

GREENVILLE – The Tree Commission for the City of Greenville will be meeting for its regularly scheduled quarterly meeting on Oct. 13, 1 p.m., in the Planning & Zoning Conference Room, 100 Public Square, Greenville.

DARKE CO. – The Northern Area Office of Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley is seeking local farm families who would like to participate in Acres of Caring, a charitable opportunity to support CSSMV projects that assist individuals and families in Auglaize, Darke, Miami, Mercer, and Shelby Counties. This is the third year for the Acres of Caring project which was started on a limited basis in Darke County in 2013. CSSMV is encouraging farmers throughout its service area join the effort. Elaine Schweller-Snyder, CSSMV Development

Coordinator for the Northern Counties, said, “During the fall harvest season, we reach out to the agricultural community, asking farm families to pledge the proceeds of the sale of one acre of their crop to support the local efforts of Catholic Social Services.” Each family contributing to the Acres of Caring project receives a sign for their farm designating their participation. Seeing these signs throughout the area confirms the generosity of farmers who are contributing to the helping services of CSSMV. A new sign is being designed for 2015 contributors.

Catholic Social Services provides early childhood services for at-risk children, mental health and wellness counseling, and senior outreach programs. The majority of funds generated by this project support early learning specialists who assist parents and teachers in local preschools. “As the project grows to include more farm families, we hope to expand our Early Learning Program to assist children in additional local preschools,” said Kathy Sell, director of the CSSMV Northern Office. “Our counselors use puppets, posters, flash-

cards, and worksheets to teach basic concepts of good behavior like being a friend, learning to share, sitting quietly and listening, and respecting the space and property of others. The goal is to identify and address problem behaviors at the earliest possible age so that social and emotional barriers to academic success are eliminated.” For additional information about Catholic Social Services or to participate in the Acres of Caring project, contact Elaine SchwellerSnyder at 498-4593 ext. 1141 or email snydere@ cssmv.org.

Ghost Walk tickets now available GREENVILLE – Darke County Center for the Arts will continue a long-standing Halloween-season tradition when they host its 12th annual Ghost Walk in Downtown Greenville on Oct. 30, 31, and Nov. 1. Based on stories collected by Arcanum resident Rita Arnold, which tells of local ghostly encounters, walks will begin at St. Clair Memorial Hall at 7:30 p.m., and last for about an hour and a half. “This is a great way for people of all ages to celebrate the season, learn a little local history, and have a lot of fun,” said Keith Rawlins, DCCA Artistic Director. According to DCCA Ex-

Republican Women meet GREENVILLE – The Darke County Republican Women’s Club will hold its regular monthly meeting on Oct. 12, 6:30 p.m., Chestnut Village Center at the Brethren Retirement Community. The speaker will be Jordan Franics, MPH, a wellness coordinator at Lifestyle Enhancement Center, Wayne Health Care. The meeting will also include dinner and a business meeting. Guests are welcome. For more information, contact Wavelene at 547-6477 or email wdenniston@woh.rr.com.

ecutive Director Andrea Jordan, the walking tour will take participants to familiar sites where they will hear surprising tales of spooky interaction that leave much unexplained. “The stories can give you chills, but are still not too scary for children old enough to enjoy a long walk in the dark,” Ms. Jordan explained. She also reminds potential Ghost Walk participants that some tour sites include uneven terrain and may be located in dimly lighted areas. Also, as in years past, Ghost Walk will be held regardless of weather conditions; if seriously inclement weather occurs, the stories will be told indoors. Greenville Masonic Lodge #143 Craft Club will be serving refreshments at St. Clair Memorial Hall before and after the event. Tickets for the Ghost Walk cost $10, and are available at Greenville Public Library, as well as at Ann’s Gifts, Readmore’s Hallmark, and

For their 17th program year, they are again seeking fun and energetic high school students who want an opportunity to give back to the community. This is a great opportunity to obtain community service hours, as well as make a difference in the life of a child. The Buddies program is a nine-month commitment where high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors volunteer to work with and mentor elementary school students two times per month. This year’s program will focus on positive life skills and will also promote social and educational enhancing activities. High school mentoring programs have become a widespread component of many nationally affiliated Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies. Studies prove that children who spend time with a positive role model are more likely to become healthy, productive adults. The Big Buddies program has proven beneficial not only for the “Littles” but for the high school volunteers as well. If you are interested in becoming a mentor in
