THE EARLY BIRD NEWSPAPER

WEEKEND EDITION - NOVEMBER 25, 2018

THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF THE GREAT DARKE COUNTY FAIR!

Hein files court order concerning courthouse security SUSAN HARTLEY

STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com

DARKE COUNTY – Darke County Common Pleas Court Judge Jonathan P. Hein has filed a court order requiring safety and security work to be completed at the county courthouse. The directive, filed Monday, Nov. 19, orders a “single entry and other courthouse security measures.” County commissioners and Hein, along with Municipal Court judge Julie Monnin have been in negotiations with their respective legal teams for the past few months to discuss the condition of the front steps/entry to the courthouse, along with other security measures the judges are seeking. Hein, along with Commissioner Mike Rhoades have verified to The Early Bird there will be one entry at the front of the courthouse. “Both egress and ingress,” Rhoades said, will

be on the front lower level of the building. On Monday, Hein said the entry would face Broadway and would most likely be located at the former coroner’s office entry. A ramp would be constructed for easy access. Hein also said that portion of the project, as well as any other security measures for inside the courthouse would be paid by the county judges’ budget. The judges will apply for a grant, which will become available March 1, with work expected to be completed by June 1, 2019, Hein said. County commissioners will still be responsible for updating or replacing the existing courthouse steps – but with budget cuts being made to 2019 appropriations, that project will most likely be put on hold. During Tuesday’s Greenville Rotary meeting, Commissioner Mike Stegall was on hand to give an update on county government. Early Bird Managing Editor Ryan Berry took

the opportunity to ask Stegall about the status of the 2019 cuts being made within county departments as well as Hein’s court order concerning the courthouse. Stegall said only two jobs are leaving the county. Berry: Which departments are the two people leaving coming from? On Wednesday, Stegall corrected his earlier statement made at Tuesday’s Rotary Club meeting regarding losing county employees due to budget cuts. Cuts will be as follows: “One employee will be cut from the commissioner’s office, one from the prosecutor’s office and one employee is retiring from the treasurer’s office.” Berry: On the court order: There will be one entrance only what does that mean for the steps project? Stegall: “We had beautiful plans for the steps. It was going to be very nice. We have worked with this for over a year. The steps… we are going to have to build a new entrance. The courthouse will be closed down. There will be one

way in and one way out. And it won’t be on the steps and it won’t be in the back. It is going to be an alternate entrance that we will have to build through the front. It will have a wheelchair lift in it. Everybody that comes in and out will be subject to search – no exceptions. Now, that is what we were told by the sheriff and Judge Hein. The only sure way for security is one way in and one way out – everybody checked. I guarantee you that will not last long. I will guarantee you that because somebody is going to say ‘I trust my people. I want a key fob that I can go past the system.’ We will be court ordered – I guarantee you if we don’t do it. That’s just the way it is. When you can’t do what you want to do and you have to do what they say. What are you going to do? Berry: So new steps? Stegall: “No. Not yet. What we’d like to do is make the courthouse presentable, but now we have to spend our money on this entrance plus the other cuts, we’re going to put the front steps on hold and they

are going to be shut off.” Berry: Are the judges getting grants to help pay for the new entrance? Stegall: “They got a grant for some new equipment – metal detectors and stuff like that. They can apply for a grant for stuff like that. They are going to use their special fund money to fix the inside where people will enter.” According to the court filing, the county, both Hein and Monnin have “undertaken courthouse security evaluations from

the Ohio Supreme Court. At least three evaluations have occurred since 2000 and in each case numerous suggestions for improvements have been made.” The court filing goes on to include a number of security improvements that have been made inside the building, citing the one “remaining major improvement is to install a single-entry location for the building with appropriate screening equipment and personnel.”

GREENVILLE – A 2008 Greenville High School graduate was recently recognized for his heroism by the United States Marine Corps. On June 20, Captain Ryan J. Boyer was awarded the Air Medal for outstanding heroic service on Oct. 11, 2017. The medal is awarded by the President of the United States of America. Capt. Boyer pilots the Sikorsky CH-53E for the Marine Corp., a heavy helicopter capable of transporting 55 troops or 30,000 pounds of cargo. With an external sling, the helicopter can carry up to 36,000 pounds. While serving as the Helicopter Second Pilot of a Sikorsky CH-53E Heavy Helicopter, the captain was deployed with Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing when his helicopter experienced a catastrophic event. According to the citation, Capt. Boyer was conducting day aerial refueling off the coast of Okinawa, Japan when his aircraft suffered a catastrophic fire in the number two engine compartment. “Reacting to the emergency, Captain Boyer skillfully disconnected from the right refueling drogue of the KC-130J tanker and turned the aircraft toward the shoreline. After brief confirmation from the

Capt. Ryan Boyer and the Air Medal he was awarded.

Aircraft Commander, he established the aircraft on a shallow glideslope for a nearby farmer’s field in preparation for an emergency landing. By his stalwart demeanor and calm response to danger in the face of hazardous conditions, Captain Boyer reflected great credit upon himself and upheld with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.” In addition to being a Greenville High School graduate, Boyer also graduated from the Miami University with a degree in engineering in 2012. He was commissioned in 2012 and earned his wings in 2015. He earned the rank of captain in 2017. He is the son of Jeff and Rhonda Boyer, of Rome, Ga. and formerly of Greenville. He is also the grandson of Jim and LaRose Boyer of Greenville.

GREENVILLE – Although it looked as though the city’s purchase of a Bomford Flailbot remote control embankment mower had been cut down by Greenville City Council at a previous meeting, the persistence of Safety Service Director Curt Garrison brought the issue to the forefront on Tuesday. Garrison explained he remained silent during council’s discussion on Nov. 6 because it took place after his report and he “didn’t feel that it was proper for me to interject any opinions at that point.” During Tuesday’s council meeting, Garrison presented a letter from Street Superintendent Ryan Delk

sharing the need for the $97,000 remote control embankment mower and brush cutter. At the heart of the argument was the safety of city workers. The city street department is responsible for mowing 200-acres weekly, which includes parks, right-ofways and retention ponds. The city also mows 100acres monthly at the city landfill and waterways. In his letter to council, Delk stated, “I have calculated 28-acres of this area has slopes ranging from 30- to 45-degrees. The proposed unmanned remote ditch mower will mow up to a 55-degree slope safely.” Garrison shared that much of this is now done with a zero-turn mower, tractor with a rotary cutter (bat-wing) – neither are rated for this type of slope – or by hand with weed-

DCTA hosts annual Christmas Banquet GREENVILLE – The Darke County Township Association will have its annual Christmas Banquet at Romer’s on Main Street, Greenville on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 6:30 p.m. The township trustees and fiscal officers extend an invitation to other public officials, businesses and friends to join them for an evening of good food, entertainment by the Green DeVilles, messages from state and local officials and great door prizes.

The cost for this special evening will be $15/ person. Please phone your reservation number to Dave Brewer, 447-3295 or Debbie Kuhnle, 5485567 by Friday, Nov. 30. eaters and other equipment. Delk wrote, “The current method is very labor intense and takes a tremendous amount of man-hours to accomplish. I feel the Bomford Flail Bot would be more efficient and a safer way to do this.” Delk and Garrison shared information on the piece of equipment from ODOT and the city of Piqua. ODOT said they only have one remote control mower. Piqua believes they should have purchased the mower years ago. The city has had safety issues with mowing in the past. “We’ve had one incident where a park worker put one of our mowers in the pond and had to be CareFlighted. I don’t know if that would be an area we would use this type of mower or not, but it just goes to the fact that zeroturn mowers can get away from you. They can get away from you more when you’re on a steep embankment.” “I would just ask coun-

cil, can we put a value on having someone on there and if they were to get hurt” said Garrison. Councilman Jeff Whitaker seemed to mock Councilman Clarence Godwin when he stated, “We got some information at the last meeting that seemed to be contradictory to what you (Garrison) found out. The fact that they (ODOT) said they had two mowers and they only have one. Where did that come from?” Whitaker believes that safety comes first. “We’ve got to protect our people. There’s other things than money.” Godwin led the charge at the last meeting to have the purchase pulled from a committee report, but remained relatively quiet on Tuesday only asking how often the embankment at the city landfill is mowed. Garrison responded that it is generally mowed a couple times a year. Legislation to purchase the equipment will be on the agenda at the Dec. 4 meeting.

POLICE BEAT GHS students admit to smoking pot in park before school PAGE 2 November 25, 2018-The Early Bird, www.bluebagmedia.com

DRUGS On Nov. 14 two students at Greenville High School – one age 15, one age 16 – admitted to smoking marijuana inside the 16-year-old’s vehicle prior to coming to school that morning. The students said they parked near Shelter No. 2 in the Greenville City Park to smoke. One of the students told the School Resource Officer there was more marijuana in the back seat of the vehicle. The officer gained permission from the parent to conduct a search, but did not locate any additional marijuana or paraphernalia. Both

boys were cited for drug abuse and were released to their parents. On Nov. 19 an officer conducted a traffic stop for no taillights in the 1300 block of Sweitzer Street. When the officer approached the vehicle he saw four juveniles and noticed the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Another officer arrived to assist and a search was conducted. Officers found several drug paraphernalia items, including a pink container with a white substance inside. The juvenile who was operating the vehicle said the container did not belong to him. He also said he’d had several passengers recently

and the container probably belonged to one of them. Some of the paraphernalia contained marijuana residue. All items were taken as evidence. The pink container with the white substance was sent for analysis. No citations were issued at that time and are pending until lab results are returned. All four juveniles were released to a parent. WANTED PERSON On Nov. 14 an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1200 block of Russ Road on the report of a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, the officer found defendant Kennedy Norris, who was found to have an active warrant for

failure to appear from Miami County. The officer transported Norris to the county line, where she was released into the custody of a Covington Police Department officer. On Nov. 19 an officer conducted a traffic stop on Harrison Avenue on a vehicle with expired registration. The driver, Barry Gross, admitted to the officer he was driving under suspension and possibly had outstanding warrants from Montgomery County. The officer learned Gross was under a non-compliance FRA (failure to show proof of insurance) suspension. He also had an outstanding felony warrant from Montgomery County for cocaine possession. Gross was arrested for the warrant and was transported to the Darke

County Jail, where he was issued a citation for driving under suspension and expired license plates. On Nov. 19 an officer made contact with a subject on Anderson Avenue who fit the description in a previous prowler complaint. The officer asked the subject for his name and the man replied “Ralph.” When the officer asked for a last name, “Ralph” mumbled something the officer could not understand. The man also told the officer he did not know his Social Security number. At that point, the officer realized the man’s real name was Stanley Richards. The officer also was aware Richards had an outstanding warrant from Darke County. Richards was placed into handcuffs and the officer explained

he was not being arrested at that time, just detained. Richards eventually gave the officer his birthdate, which confirmed the outstanding warrant. Richards was transported to the Darke County Jail without further incident. EARLY BIRD POLICY The Greenville Police Beat is prepared from public records available at the Greenville Police Department. Christmas Tractor Parade and more slated BY LINDA MOODY CORRESPONDENT lmoody@earlybirdpaper.com

ANSONIA – Ansonia Community Pride is hosting a Christmas Tractor Parade starting at 7 p.m. on Dec. 1. And, the celebration is turning into much more. “The idea was given to us by Erin Horst,â€? said Erica Wentworth of the committee. “She had seen similar parades in other towns and, after doing some research, she realized there wasn’t a lighted tractor parade in the entire state of Ohio. Since Darke County has a strong agricultural inuence, she felt it was a great ďŹ t. She approached Ansonia Community Pride about the event.â€? The route is the same as the Fourth of July parade, starting at the First Church of God, north on 118, to the stoplight and then east toward the school. “We ask that people don’t park on the street along the parade route that evening due to large farm equipment moving through and also so everyone watching

has a great view of the parade,â€? Wentworth said. How many tractors are they expecting? “This is our ďŹ rst year and we are using the term tractor a little loosely,â€? Wentworth said. “We do have some golf cart and gator entries. We are very excited for our line-up and have several businesses that are putting in tractors as well as family farms. And, our Fire and EMS are also going to be putting in units.â€? She said there will be no competition this year. “But, it’s deďŹ nitely something we want to consider for the future,â€? she added. According to her, the only way the event would be canceled is if there should be a Level 3. “We are still accepting registrations, even the day of the event,â€? Wentworth said. “We just ask that if possible, they contact us and let us know the length of their entry so we can plan the line up appropriately. We are asking for a suggested donation of $15 for

entry. All of the money will be donated to the food pantry at the United Methodist Church in Ansonia.â€? She indicated that businesses will be open late on Dec. 1. “There will be hot chocolate at the ďŹ re station,â€? she noted. Those having questions about the parade can contact Wentworth at email: ansoniacp@gmail.com, Facebook Page: Ansonia Community Pride. “Several businesses will be open late,â€? Wentworth said. “Ashes to Beauty is hosting an open house with several vendors, facepainting and more. The ďŹ re department will be open for people to warm up and have hot chocolate and cookies, and Under the Willow Tree will be open late.â€? “Come enjoy an evening out in our little town of Ansonia,â€? said Ashley Gilpin, owner of Ashes to Beauty. “We have a fun-ďŹ lled evening planned.â€? Activity at the salon begins at 5 p.m.

Riffell sentenced to two years for embezzlement BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – Cheryl Riffell was sentenced Monday to two years in the Ohio Reformatory for Women for embezzling nearly $180,000 from her former employer, Route 49 Transport. According to Darke County Prosecutor Kelly Ormsby, Riffell, who worked as a bookkeeper for the Arcanum transport company, padded 175 payroll checks she wrote to herself – adding $1,000 to each check, Ormsby said. Riffell, 56, of Arcanum embezzled $179,919.58

over the course of five years, between 2013 and the summer of 2017, Ormsby said. “She had to think about what she was doing,” Ormsby told Judge Jonathan P. Hein. Ormsby also pointed out the owners of Route 49 put trust in Riffell. As the company’s bookkeeper, Ormsby said Riffell had a “fiduciary obligation” to protect assets of the company. “It’s not a multi-million dollar company.” Riffell’s defense attorney Alex Pendl said the defendant began padding her checks when she was experiencing “marital strife” and her husband was not contributing financially to the household. “She took on a significant amount of credit card debt” and that it was “always her plan to pay it back. When confronted by the sheriff’s deputy she confessed” Pendl said, even going as far as to explain to the deputy exactly how she committed the crime. Riffell, who was joined in the courtroom by a number of family and friends, was given the opportunity to read a statement to Hein and her victims, several of whom also were in the courtroom. “There are no words to express” the “deep sorrow” Riffell said she felt about her actions, and also had she had experienced “shame, embarrassment and remorse.” Riffell said her husband had left to live in

Indianapolis at the time she began embezzling and had stopped contributing financially. The “creditors were calling” daily. “I tried to stop advancing extra money,” she said. “I understand I let Satan have control. My life has been a living hell. Knowing what pain and struggle I caused you.” Jesse and Jennifer Besecker, owners of Route 49 also prepared a statement, which Jennifer Besecker read in court. “I’ve had over a year to think about what I would say to you,” she told Riffell. Besecker added she’d heard Riffell voice concern how her children would be affected by her actions. “Where was the thought of your children when you were padding the checks” and using the money, Besecker said, for vacations, including cruises. Besecker also said the fact that the money wasn’t

there required her husband to perform mechanical work on the company’s trucks instead of hiring a mechanic. “You’ll never be able to give back” the missed parent-teacher conferences and other family activities he missed, Besecker said. Ormsby recommended Hein impose a prison sentence, while Pendl suggested community control sanctions be given. “Community control is not appropriate,” Hein said, adding it would be hard to “explain to the public how someone can steal $180,000 and walk out” with only community control. Riffell will be eligible for early judicial release. “I expect to bring you out of prison early,” Hein said. Riffell also will be expected to pay restitution, which she began Monday when she handed the court a check for $35,000.

ODA announces 2019 easement program REYNOLDSBURG – The Ohio Department of Agriculture recently announced that eight land trusts, four counties and 15 Soil and Water Conservation Districts will receive funding to help preserve farmland across the state. These organizations will receive allocations from the Clean Ohio Fund to select, close and monitor easements under the Local Agricultural Easement Purchase Program (LAEPP). LAEPP sponsor organizations will accept applications from Ohio landowners interested in selling an agricultural easement on their farms. A total of nearly $8.5 million will be made available in this funding round. Local sponsors have been certiďŹ ed to accept applications in 34 counties. Interested landowners should contact the certiďŹ ed local sponsor in their county for application details. The program allows landowners to voluntarily sell easements on their farms to the state of Ohio.

The easement requires the farm remain permanently in agriculture production. Selected farms must be 40 acres or more, actively engaged in farming, participate in the Current Agricultural Use Valuation program, demonstrate good stewardship of the land, have the support of their local government and not lay directly in the path of development. Landowners may use the proceeds of the easement in any way they wish, but most reinvest it in their farm operations. Funding for the program is derived from the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund, approved by voters in 2008. When combined with easements from all programs, 449 family farms in 59 counties have collectively preserved more than 73,500 acres in agricultural production. For more information on Ohio’s farmland preservation effort visit: www.agri.ohio.gov/wps/ portal/gov/oda/programs/ farmland-preservation-ofďŹ ce.

Davidson names App Challenge winner HAMILTON – Congressman Warren Davidson (OH08) recently announced the student creators of “SmartPantryâ€? winner of the 2018 Congressional App Challenge (CAC) for Ohio’s Eighth Congressional District. “The Congressional App Challenge highlights how ubiquitous the knowledge economy has become. I’m proud of Gunner, Jacob, and Kyle for their creative spirit and commitment to our community,â€? said Congressman Davidson. Congressman Davidson recognized Gunner Nonnamaker, Jacob Kahmann, and Kyle Inderhees at Ross High School in Hamilton with congratulatory certiďŹ cates to commemorate their win. The team created Smart-Pantry, a Mobile app that aims to set the standard for efďŹ cient food collection and distribution at food pantries. The app should help to improve inventory management for food pantries and cut down on wait times for meals for consumers. Future upgrades include creating a money-

less “point-of-saleâ€? function that lets individuals place orders ahead of time to avoid long lines. The app also aims to address fraud and abuse at food pantries by linking to state and federal food pantry registries and creating a system to register new individual users. There was participation from over 250 members of Congress in which nearly 14,000 students submitted applications from over 45 states. This is the second year Ohio’s 8th District participated in the CAC since it was ďŹ rst introduced in 2015. Eight teams and 34 students participated in the Ohio Eighth District contest. Smart-Pantry will be featured in the Capitol building and displayed on www. House.gov. Additionally, the Smart-Pantry creators will receive an invitation to the #HouseOfCode reception in spring of 2019 in Washington, DC. Each winner will also receive $250 in Amazon Web Services Credits. The CAC will announce winners from all participating states beginning Dec. 9.

UC College of Law wins AG mock trial COLUMBUS—Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine recently announced that the University of Cincinnati College of Law earned top honors in the Attorney General’s Sixth Annual Public Service Mock Trial Competition for Ohio law school students. The competition, which took place at the Franklin County Courthouse, featured 10 teams of students from Ohio law schools. “Congratulations to the University of Cincinnati and all the teams that participated in this year’s competition, Attorney General DeWine said. “The goal of this program is to get law students interested in public service careers and to give them an opportunity to gain experience in the courtroom. We appreciate their hard work.

This year’s competition revolved around a gender discrimination and defamation case problem that was released to the teams in September. The teams were coached by experienced public-sector litigators from around the state, and they presented each side of the case in two separate rounds. The rounds were judged by experienced public-service litigators and private practitioners from around the state. Members of UC’s winning team included: James Riley Able, Raika Casey, Michael Chernoff, Nikita Srivastava. The Ohio Attorney General’s Public Service Mock Trial Competition is designed to provide a valuable learning opportunity for Ohio law school students and to expose them to public-service legal careers.

I know Thanksgiving is over, but some “down timeâ€? for me this week had me reecting on my life once again. Because my vehicle was in the garage for several days, I spent most of my time at home in deep thought. First of all, I’m thankful that we have God to go to in times good and bad. He does answer prayers in one way or another. Everything revolves around Him. Yes, my vehicle was out of commission for a short time and some questionable activity had me wondering if I would have to replace it, but, hopefully it’s on the mend... at least through wintertime. Therefore, I appreciate my mechanic you don’t know how much. I do not like depending on other people for my transportation, but appreciate those who do help me out. My mechanic is always explaining what he is doing to my vehicle, so kudos to

Greenville XC state team celebrates 50th anniversary GAYLEN BLOSSER

SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – This year marks the 50th anniversary of Greenville High School’s state cross country team. Under head coach Wayne Johnson, the Green Wave made it to state sporting a 9-1 regular season record relying on five seniors and two juniors to get to Columbus. Senior, Kent Fourman was the leading Wave runner. Of the 16 members of the Wave 1968 Cross Country team, Seniors Kent Fourman, Scott Mills, Robert Mwihambi, Jerry Detrick, Jim Ackley, and juniors Steve Gruber and Rick Besecker made up the team that ran in Columbus. Other members of the team included: Greg Badger, William Johnson, Tom Sackett, Jim Broderick, Steve Schafer, John Schmermund, Ralph Payton, Dallas Miller, Dave Thompson, Marvin Johnson, Todd Oliver and Manager Barry Enochs. “I know Coach Johnson knew the runners he had,” said Scott Mills. “We had the ability to go to the state meet and he expected that, he pushed us and we responded.” Five members from the 1968 state team; Mills, Oliver, Detrick, Gruber and Besecker recently reunited to reminisce while remembering the team’s coach and accomplishments. “Coach Johnson had a real sense of history and tradition at Greenville and the Green and White – it meant a lot to him,” Gruber stated. “One time he didn’t feel like we performed nearly as well as we should have and he told us to just take off our jerseys and throw them in a trash can because it didn’t seem like we really understood or appreciated the importance of running for the Green and White. He just really wanted to win and instilled in us that in every meet, every practice

we should be winning.” “Coach Johnson was a great man to work with,” said Mills. “He was just a real good person. He ran cross country in high school here in Greenville and he knew that we were going to have a good team this year and we just did it for him. He was just a real good guy to work with.” “He was a motivator – he was all about Greenville tradition,” Detrick said. “One day we were at practice and we had had a real hard practice. He told us to ‘run the course backwards,’ like to cool down. We all decided we were just going to go in and take a shower. He came in the shower and took us back and worked us out some more because we didn’t do what he told us to do.” The shower story brought a chuckle from each as the five remembered the day a lesson was learned. “He wanted us to stay focused and he had his little rules,” Oliver remembered. “He didn’t want to see us engaging in any conversations with a girl after school hours. We were supposed to be focused on running. He caught me opening the door for a young lady who had an armful of books and I had to do an extra two miles after the team was done that day.” “He was quite the coach,” said Besecker. “We all really honored and respected him.” Coach Johnson, a GHS alumni from the Class of 1961 was young for a head varsity coach but received the respect and admiration from each of his athletes. “He very much revered Dwight Sulzman who had done everything you could do in terms of track and cross country in Greenville from the 1920’s for several decades,” noted Gruber. “Out of respect for Dwight Salzman he wanted to resurrect the programs to the level they once were when Salzman had coached.” “He pushed us pretty hard and he wasn’t going

to accept anything other than our very best,” continued Gruber. “That is what most coaches expected, especially in that era – this was the time of Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler, it was a different world and some of the motivation things he might have done with us we would not do now – we would be in big trouble.” In 1968 the GHS XC team competed against Double-A teams as there were only two divisions “A” and “AA”. We were in the large school division but we were one of the smallest of the large schools,” noted Gruber. “We ran against teams like Cleveland John F Kennedy, Cleveland John Adams,” Mills said. “Those schools had like 2,000 boys in their high school.” “Cincinnati Elder,” added Gruber as the Wave alumni runners agreed GHS had approximately 900 in the high school at the time. “We were a team,” Oliver said. Even though coach was hard on us we had fun at it and we had fun as a group.” Each runner could name favorite courses to run – each favoring the same three or four venues. “Running at Miami (University) – that was a beautiful course,” said Gruber. “They invited high school teams to come and we ran before the college teams. That was exciting.” “The golf courses were the best, the smoothest terrain,” Mills said. “Those were pretty exciting. Once in a while you would get on a pretty hilly course.” “Coach would say sprint the hills,” noted Oliver. “Lean into it and sprint – run like crazy downhill.” At the time, the Treaty City Invitational was not an event but there was the Lowell Thomas Invitational held in a cow pasture near Franklin Monroe. The Lowell Thomas Invitational in Pitsburg,” said Besecker. “It was a big invitational – a big

deal.” “They took the cows off the pasture and had the meet,” Gruber said. “You ran through a creek and they had cow patties – and they were fresh.” “You would run through thistles, thorns, your legs were bleeding when you got done,” said Mills. “Where the cattle had walked through the mud you would be running in that and ankles would turn. It was pretty rough terrain on that course.” “Jim Ackley, a member of the state team lost his life in a home repair accident. Ackley and Gruber went on to run at the college level, both at Cedarville. The team noted their parents supported them at regular season meets and the team was given a big pep rally/assembly at GHS before going to state to compete. “Oh yes,” said Besecker. “My parents, at least my mother came to almost every one. My mother put together a scrapbook.” “My parents never missed a meet,” Gruber said.

“Parents came,” stated Mills. “Mine came.” – “Mine came,” added Oliver. Although the former teammates have each gone their own way, they still see each other occasionally and still have the memories. Gruber and Oliver went on to serve as Greenville City Councilmen. Dr. Steve Gruber received his PHD from Miami University and has had roles in education as a varsity track and cross country coach, an Athletic Director, a junior high and high school

principal before moving on to Cedarville University where he led the Education Department until retiring in 2017. Besecker worked 25 years for the City of Greenville, Mills worked 26 years for Cadillac Gauge before the factory moved to California. Detrick retired after a biology teaching career at GHS where he noted, “Steve (Gruber) was my principal. Oliver spent 31-1/2 years at Corning. “I was there when the put the padlock on,” noted Oliver.

VERSAILLES – The Versailles Lady Tigers entertained the Bradford Lady Railroaders and the Tippecanoe Lady Red Devils in a Tuesday night basketball scrimmage. Versailles Coach Jacki Stonebraker has become accustomed to a late start to the Lady Tigers basketball season as the volleyball team comes off backto-back DIII OHSAA State Championship titles. “Right now we are just trying to get better every day,” noted Stonebraker. “We’re starting a little late but these girls know that every day that we’re just trying to work to get better every game, every practice, every time we jump on the floor.”

The Lady Tigers basketball team takes the 2018-19 court coming off back-to-back 2017 and 2018 OHSAA DIII state championship basketball appearances played in Columbus. “We don’t want total success right now at every-

thing we’re doing because we want to keep working on the little things,” Stonebraker said, “but yet we want to make sure that we’re giving one hundred and ten percent in practice and making sure that we go as hard as we can to get better.”

Greenville’s Marcus Wood receives First Team awards GAYLEN BLOSSER

SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – Greenville’s Marcus Wood recently received two First Team football awards following the 2018 Green Wave football season. “I am very honored to receive these awards,” said Wood. “My coaches and teammates pushed me hard to do this and get these awards.” The GHS junior received First Team AllGWOC North Defensive Back and the Division III First Team Southwest District Receiver Award. “On the GWOC side he was defensive back, on the Southwest District side he

was a receiver which really speaks to his ability being a two-way player,” said Greenville Coach Aaron Shaffer. “Multiple catches, multiple touchdowns. He was one interception away from tying a school record for interceptions in a season. Could have went down as a return specialist; had two punt returns for touchdowns, multiple long kickoff returns.” “Marcus is just a tremendous athlete,” continued Shaffer. “He’s blessed athletically and the other part of it that some people lose – when you start thinking about the athletic nature of Marcus is his understanding of the game, some of those interceptions are great athletic plays but

it’s because he sees the ball well, he understands what’s coming at him. On the offensive side he runs great routes, he has tremendous hands.” “You get it within – even close to him in terms of where the ball is located, he’s going to be able to go make plays on it,” added Shaffer. “It’s just a testament to Marcus’ work ethic and his understanding of the game and certainly his athleticism.” The Greenville junior joins an elite group of underclassmen earning the award, an award most often going to senior athletes. “On the offensive side, Marcus was one of four or five juniors for the Divi-

sion III Southwest District and we’re talking a quarter of Ohio where there is a lot of good football being played at that level,” said Shaffer. “It is definitely a tremendous honor that will make him eligible for All-Ohio which isn’t out of the realm of possibilities with the numbers and performances that Marcus put out there this year.” “It’s an exciting thing for him to be able to come back next year and be able to try and do it again,” concluded Shaffer. “Looking forward to what he can do next year.” “I would like to thank everybody that helped me receive these awards,” Wood said, “everybody that helped me through it.”

They are making some great progress. I am so excited to see what they do in the future and so excited to be a part of it.” “I believe she chose the right school for the right reason,” said Arcanum coach Josh Artin. “I don’t think she would have chosen it if her heart was in a different direction.” Gable has her sights set on state with a high school swimming season remaining before taking her swimming skills to the University of Tennessee. “My goal this season is to win state,” said Gable. “I would like to break the state record in the 200free. I have a goal of 145 in the 200-free and 53 in the 100-back. Whether that be the high school season or not, I swim all year round so that might be at a different meet – so it might look

In the end I’m really happy with the results. It was a fun process but the end results was the best.” “I would like to thank my family especially my dad for providing everything, my mom for taking

the time to drive me places and my brother for always supporting me,” Gable stated, “and my teammates and the ones that kept making everything fun for me.” Isabella joins her older brother, Isaiah Gable, also at the Division-I level playing for the Southeast Missouri State basketball program. “She is very special,” concluded Coach Artin. “She’s very talented, she is always willing to help the team. She is a great person to be a role model where she will show other swimmers what she has learned and help them further in their skills as well.”

PITSBURG – Franklin Monroe senior Ethan Conley signed Saturday to play basketball for the Ashland University Eagles. “It was a great experience,” Conley said of the recruiting process. “I want to thank God for placing me here. My dream was to play college basketball and I am very grateful for the opportunity.” Conley, the son of Javan and Rebecca Conley stated he is thankful to continue his basketball career at Ashland while thanking his family as well as FM coach Troy Myers for helping him achieve his goal of playing college ball. “I’m thankful for my family – mom and dad, Corina and Mason,” said Conley. “Every time I might have felt down or might have doubted my abilities, they always picked me back up. They always encouraged me and encouraged me to keep going.” With Ashland, Conley said he felt comfortable with the coach and players.

VERSAILLES – The Bradford Lady Railroaders basketball team made a good showing Tuesday night in scrimmage play against the Tippecanoe Lady Red Devils and the Versailles Lady Tigers basketball teams. “I expect our kids to play hard every night,” said Bradford Coach Chris

five sophomores and one senior while not fielding a JV squad. “We are a young team,” noted Besecker. “We have one senior and the rest are freshmen and sophomores but these kids had pretty good runs in the junior high level so they are used to being successful on the basketball court. “I’m expecting a good season,” concluded Coach Besecker.

“They really set the standard in in the begging of the whole recruiting process,” Conley said. “I was … this is it. I don’t think there is any other school that can top this. They really went above and beyond – made you feel welcome. It’s going to be a great four years – looking forward to it.” Conley plans to continue is education with studies in Financial Management. “When I stepped on campus I knew that it was where that I wanted to be for four years,” Conley stated. “Just being around all the teammates, the coaches, I felt like they would have my best interest at heart and the decision was more than just basketball for me. It is going to be where I am going to school for four years, people I am going to be around and Ashland felt like home.” “I think it is a tremen-

dous fit,” FM Coach Myers said. “Their coaches were the first ones to come down here and offer him. They never missed an event from that point until he committed. They deserve a lot of credit. That’s a two and a half hour drive from here. They’ve invested the most in him and I think he knew that at the end of the day. He knew that for the next four years he better be somewhere where they are taking care of him. Those coaches have been phenomenal.” “He’s one of the most influential people in my life,” Conley said of Coach Myers. “If I wanted to get extra shots up in the gym, he’ll stay however long. He’ll stay the extra time and help his players in whatever ways he can. Same with my AAU coach; Dan Gudorf – always pushing me to do my best.”

Our Services to the Armed Forces (SAF) Department offers Resiliency Training, Preparedness Training, Emergency Communications Services and support to military hospitals and veterans’ facilities. “Java for G.I.s is a companion piece to the more substantive SAF services we provide,” said Andy Guidugli, Regional Services to the Armed Forces director. “It’s a way for us to make personal connections with our veterans and show our appreciation over a simple cup of coffee—a small, yet meaningful gesture. As a veteran myself, I understand the importance of knowing that our service to our country hasn’t been forgotten.” In the spring, the Red Cross will host hospitality sessions at the VA facilities where volunteers can spend time with our veterans sharing fellowship over a cup of coffee. “This is my favorite aspect of this program,” said Greater Cincinnati-Dayton Regional CEO Stephanie Byrd. “Red Cross volunteers, many of them who are veterans themselves, will gather with vets for coffee and conversation. We’ll also invite high school students, giving them an opportunity to participate in a meaningful public service experience.” Cans and bags of ground coffee, as well as individual serving coffee and k-cups are accepted.

Defendants appear in court for sentencings and arraignments BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – Eddie Wead, 61, of Greenville was sentenced Monday to serve one year in prison for unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Assistant Prosecutor Jim Bennett told Judge Jonathan P. Hein there “was no dispute on the two incidents of unlawful conduct with a minor.” Bennett added he did “take offense at the defendant’s statement that the victim initiated” the incidents. Bennett also said

Wead “brainwashed” and “groomed” the minor female. “He had her calling him ‘daddy.’” Wead apologized to the victim, who was in the courtroom Monday, as well as to his wife and the court. The victim read a statement, asking Hein to “give Eddie a punishment that fits the crime. I looked up to you above anyone else,” she said to Wead. “I feel like I have to keep my guard up all the time.” The victim also said she’d received letters from Wead that “people passed to me” and she felt like Wead “kept

using God as a way to trick me.” The victim’s mother told Hein she believed the incidents had “destroyed” her daughter. Hein addressed the victim. “This is something you shouldn’t let define you the rest of your life. Take a bigger, wider view. Rise from the ashes to survive. That’s when you’re truly a survivor.” Wead will serve one year in prison, as well as up to 60 months community control once released. He also will be required to register as a

Tier II sex offender every six months for the next 25 years. Also Monday: * Larry Baker, 57, of Greenville, was sentenced to 60 days in jail on a DUI charge from March of this year. According to Hein, Baker has a history of alcohol abuse. Hein asked Baker, an owner of Danny’s Bar in Greenville “Do I order you to sell the business? We won’t go there,” adding Baker needed to “get to the point where you value sobriety. You gotta do this.” Baker also lost driving

privileges and is required t0 pay a $1,350 fine. After serving jail time, Baker will be on community control sanctions, which includes no drugs or alcohol and 100 hours of community service. * Gary Skaggs, 22, of Union City, Ohio, appeared via video conference from the Darke County Jail for probation violations on one count of possession. According to court records, Skaggs was placed on intervention in December 2016 after entering a guilty plea, but failed to report and pay court costs. Accord-

The Thin Man at Library Film Series GREENVILLE – The Thin Man, released in 1934 and directed by W. S. Van Dyke, is a mysterycomedy film that follows the exploits of crimesolving couple Nick and Nora Charles as they seek to unravel a labyrinthine murder mystery. Released just as the Hays Code was coming into effect, the film displays some mildly racy humor that was erased from Hollywood films within the year. Few comedic film couples have ever had better chemistry on screen than William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora. They exchange witty one-liners, flirting and teasing their way through one absurd situation after another, looking dashing and stylish all the while and drowning a never-

ending stream of cocktails. A murder mystery has never been so charming. Join the Greenville Public Library on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 6:30 p.m., as they screen this comedic crime caper as part of the Third Floor Film Series. Free popcorn, candy, and soft drinks will be provided, and David Nilsen will lead a brief discussion after the film.

available. Classes are held Monday evenings from 7-8 p.m. and Wednesday mornings from 9-10 a.m. Please call for an equipment list. Classes are free and are open for anyone 18 years or older. Classes will be held at library. Dec. 13 will be their STEAM program for homeschoolers grades 1-8. They will be finishing up their Chihuly Glass inspired sculpture to be displayed at the library in the children’s area. Extra materials will be available for those who could not attend in November. Registration is not required for their STEAM program, but calling to let them know you are coming is appreciated. Class starts at 10:15 a.m. and ends at 11:30 a.m. the second Thursday of every month. Candice Skinner will be presenting a special Holiday Storyhour for preschoolers on Tuesday, Dec. 18 from 11 a.m.-noon. Activities and stories to help

ing to assistant prosecutor Deborah Quigley, this is the defendant’s second probation violation. She recommended Hein set a $50,000 bond. Hein set a $25,000 bond and appointed Randall Breaden as Skaggs’ attorney and set a probable cause hearing for Dec. 17. * Edward Garland, 34, of New Weston, was arraigned via video conference for one count of domestic violence. Hein appointed Dave Rohrer as his attorney, set a pre-trial date of Jan. 4 and ordered Garland have no personal contact with the victim.

Solid Rock blesses families with turkeys RYAN BERRY

BRADFORD – Solid Rock Church, on US 36 near Bradford, is a church that is demonstrating Christ through their actions. On Saturday, members of the church prepared to give away 100 turkeys. While providing families with only a turkey would have been helpful to the families in need, members of the church took it a step further and also gave a laundry basket full of groceries and a pie. The giveaway was scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., but with cars lining up down Old US 36, Pastor Matthew O’Shell said they decided to start a little sooner. One car after another drove up to the church to receive their basket of groceries and then pulled up a little further to receive a turkey. “We want to bless people on Thanksgiving,” said O’Shell. “We want to show the Lord.” He believes Thanksgiving is the perfect

time for families to come together. Solid Rock Church has been in existence for eight years. It started in a store front in Arcanum and then rented the Painter Creek Church of the Brethren before finding its current home. Since their beginning, the church has been extremely active in the community by participating in the Darke County Fair and hosting its Solid Rock & Boom each Labor Day Weekend. Events like this are big motivators for his congregation of approximately 200 members. He is hoping it will be bigger next year. Funds for this giveaway were available by donations from the congregation and through several fundraisers. O’Shell pointed out many of the church’s members showed up to help give out the turkeys and groceries, but those who weren’t there were also part of the event through their contributions.

GREENVILLE – With the temperature hovering around 40-degrees and no rain or snow in sight, this year’s Hometown Holiday Horse Parade proved to be one of the best in the history of the event. Parade watchers were five or six people deep along South Broadway in downtown Greenville to watch 93 entries parade up and down the street. Main Street Greenville estimated the crowd watching the parade to be approximately 9,000. Crysta Hutchinson Bloomingdale, executive director of Main Street Greenville, declared this was “hallmark year for the Hometown Holiday Horse Parade.” Horses, big and small, carrying riders and pulling carriages were lit up for the

enjoyment of everyone along the parade route. Bloomingdale said, “We are so grateful to all the spectators, participants, volunteers and sponsors who have supported this event over the past 15 years and have helped it grow into the tradition it is today.” Businesses along the route were fortunate to see plenty of foot traffic in their stores. Bloomingdale added, “The horse parade is a wonderful event for downtown Greenville and our locally owned businesses. The event attracts people from all over Ohio and neighboring states, many of whom have never been to Greenville before. They shop and dine downtown before the parade and get to experience the charm of our small town and local businesses. As a result many of them come back to Greenville as a destination for their holiday

shopping.” While most of the parade went well, one incident towards the end of the event dampened the spirit of some of the parade watchers. As one of the horses was finishing the parade route it threw its rider and Greenville Township Rescue was called to the scene. According to witnesses, the horse was spooked

and reared up. When the horse came down the rider fell to the ground and the horse fell on top of the rider. The rider was taken to Wayne HealthCare. An official from the horse parade shared the rider was scheduled to be released from the hospital that same evening with minor injuries, including bruises and soreness.

Staff and students play to help Special Olympics RYAN BERRY

GREENVILLE – The Supply Chain Management (SCM) classes at Greenville High School’s Technology Center has embraced Darke County Special Olympics and has donated thousands of dollars over the past few years through A Night in Hollywood. Now, SCM is being joined by other Greenville classes that are part of the BPA program in supporting Special Olympics. On Sunday, students from SCM, Financial Specialists, Computer Information, Marketing, and IMTV came together to host a Students vs. Staff Volleyball Game in the Greenville High School gymnasium to benefit Darke County Special Olympics. The staff easily took the first few games, winning 25-14, 25-23 and 25-20. However, the students did have a 22-19 lead in the second game before the staff came back. The students nearly pulled

off the upset in the third game. The students were down 17-10 and managed to get within a point of the staff before the staff went on to win. Dara Buchy, teacher for the SCM program, shared the staff was excited about the opportunity, “The staff was super pumped. They even had practice. As soon they figured out who wanted to play, they started a group chat.” The volleyball game raised over $600 for Special Olympics. Those funds will be added to the annual A Night in Hollywood fundraiser that will be held March 2, 5:30-9 p.m. in the Greenville High School gymnasium. The event will feature a talent show, festive food, who’s the baby game, silent art and special guests Taiko, Wavaires and GHS Jazz Scene. Tickets will be available at the door. Buchy stated the school has encouraged the different classes that are part of the BPA program to get together and have regular meetings. Next month, Financial Specialists will

host the meeting and have invited the Aktion Club to present the Stages of Professional Dress. Buchy is hoping this volleyball game will help Greenville’s BPA members bring home an award from the regional competition on Dec. 13. They have consistently won the region each year for A Night in Hollywood and have won at the state level three times. They are hoping to take it to

nationals this year. A Night in Hollywood was also recognized at the Ohio School Boards Association meeting last week. Buchy shared the president of the OSBA was interested in the program and promised to come with her constituents. “This shouldn’t just be a one shot deal. Every county should be doing it. It’s not like it’s that difficult. You just have to get the kids on board.”

ARCANUM – Country Dog House LLC, located at 6234 GrubbsRex Road, Arcanum, will be the scene of an open house on Dec. 1 and will be open to the public from 2-5 p.m. “Join us for a chance to check out our kennel,” said owner Dana Henninger. “Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed.” The facility has 18 suites with three main sizes with adjustable kennels for multi-family dogs. “Boarding prices will range from $15/night$30/night,” Henninger said. “We will also offer

a convenient pickup of dogs if flying out of the Dayton airport.” Country Dog House, she said, will also offer obedience training. “Contact us at 937589-2414 for group or individual lessons,” she noted. “We have a doit-yourself dog bath and grooming area for owners to use. Don’t worry about messing up your house; bring dogs to our place and we will clean up after you. During the summer, you will be able to use our grass walking trails approximately one-mile long back to the woods.” Henninger said they can also be contacted by finding them on Facebook at Country Dog House LLC.

GREENVILLE – St. Marys students spent the past couple days preparing for their school’s 30th Thanksgiving Feast, traditionally held the day before the holiday. On Monday, the school’s five eighth-graders – Mariah Kreusch, Carson Pope, Luke D. Rammel, Luke S. Rammel, and Lauren Wright – baked 21 homemade pumpkin pies in the school’s kitchen. “The hardest part was putting the crust into the pan,” Kreusch said, explaining how some of the crusts would fall apart when the students attempted to transfer it into pie pans. The trouble is well

worth the effort, Kreusch said because the school’s annual feast draws “everybody together.” This year, along with current and former students and staff and family members, the feast included special guests, including the superintendent of the Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese Susie Gibbons and the regional director for the Northern Area Catholic schools Karyn Hecker Each grade level at St. Marys helps prepare the feast, which includes turkey, stuffing, fruit salad, corn, beans, and of course, pumpkin pie. Last year, the students prepared enough food for approximately 180 guests. Retired St. Marys teacher Sylvia Kelly-

Pressnall assisted with Monday’s pie baking. Kelly-Pressnall said she used to use the pie baking activity as a math experiment with the eighth-graders. “They’d figure out the measurements – I’d put out 1/3 cup measuring instead of one cup – and

they’d figure out how many pies we needed,” she explained. The pies, as well as the stuffing and other feast foods are all made from scratch. Leftover food will be donated to Grace Resurrection Soup Kitchen.

Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. This year Greenville VFW Post 7262 selected Chief Stephen Eldred the Naval Science Instructor (NSI) for the Greenville Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC), the Green Wave Navy as Teacher of the Year. Chief Eldred has been the NSI at Greenville Senior High School since April of 2014. He has made himself a vital tool of the High School. He teaches his Cadets (students) and even other students of the high school what it really means to be an American. He talks to every one of his Cadets about the Constitution and how our government affects our lives daily. He is a role model for discipline and respect for the whole school to follow. He instills basic manners into his Cadets that many of our youth today have lost. He teaches respect to others and has an open door to all students in the high school not just those that take his class. This has given many kids the opportunity to talk to someone besides the administrators. He has increased the unit’s involvement with in the community. In the 2017/2018 school year, the Green Wave Navy volunteered to over 3,400 hours of community service. His leadership and demonstration of giving back to the community is something for all to follow. He has gotten the Green Wave Navy Color Guard involved in presenting the Colors for school sporting events, local parades, as well as professional sports teams to include the Cincinnati Reds, Columbus Blue Jackets,

and the Dayton Dragons. He has been instrumental in the growth of the NJROTC Unit. He has increased its enrollment numbers from 80 to over 105 in the three years he has been at Greenville. During his tenure, Chief Eldred has been instrumental in the unit’s ability to go from being unranked to one of the top units in Ohio and the country. For the 2016/2017 school year, the Green Wave Navy was recognized as the most improved unit in Area 3 along with receiving the NJROTC Unit Achievement Award. Area 3 now consists of 54 schools from West Virginia to Nebraska and Kentucky to Michigan. For the most recent school year (2017/2018), the unit was recognized as a Distinguished Unit with honors (the high-

est unit award offered to a NJROTC unit). They were one of only two schools in the state of Ohio to receive this award and it is awarded to only the top 20 percent nationally. His name will now be submitted for district-level judging. From

there, if he is selected it will then be forwarded to the departmentlevel (state-level). If selected at the state level, he will then be passed along to VFW National Headquarters for consideration in the national awards contest.

Fish needs help filling Mitten Trees GREENVILLE – The Fish Mitten Tree once again needs donated gloves and mittens to decorate its empty branches; these donations will be distributed to the children enrolled in Darke County Head Start programs. In addition to the Mitten Tree located at Montage, 525 S. Broadway, Greenville, a Mitten Tree also will stand inside the Brethren Retirement Community, 750 Chestnut St., Greenville, and in Fourman’s Variety Store, 4 W. George St., Arcanum. Many churches and organizations also erect trees which collect gloves and mittens from their members; these donations are then passed on to Fish to be given to the little Head Start participants. annual holiday project of the local Fish organization for over 50 years. “The Mitten Tree provides the opportunity for people of all ages and incomes to participate in the true spirit of the season,” said Marilyn Delk, the Fish volunteer coordinating the Mitten Tree project, “We sincerely hope that our generous neighbors will once again this year be able to spare the relatively small amount required to purchase a pair of mittens or gloves and bring joy and warmth to local children who may not receive many other gifts this Christmas,” Mrs. Delk concluded. To best meet the needs of children directly served by Head Start programs, donated gloves and mittens should fit boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 5; however, donated items in larger or smaller sizes will be shared with Head Start families. So that the mittens and gloves can be distributed prior to Christmas, contributions should be made by Dec. 19. For more information regarding the Mitten Tree, contact Mrs. Delk at (937) 548-2482.

Beginning at 5 p.m., they will have their Candy Cane Hunt in Ivester Park complete with prizes for every child. This is a very fun activity for the children to find the hidden candy canes in the park with flashlights. Each candy cane is numbered and they can be redeemed for prizes in the Scout House after the hunt. The Christmas Horse Parade begins at 7 p.m. to officially welcome Santa to the village of Arcanum. The parade will travel from George Street to Main Street and through Ivester Park which will be full of lights and festive Christmas music. The

park will be decorated by various groups, community organizations, school groups and local citizen volunteers. The children will have the opportunity to visit with Santa after the parade in the Scout House. After the parade, there will be horse and carriage rides available and a bonfire to warm up with and enjoy. The horse-drawn carriage rides will journey through the park and downtown Arcanum area. They are still accepting parade entries that include horse-drawn carriages, wagons and buggies. They will also accept motorized vehicles for the parade that are decorated with festive Christmas lights.
