Mathiases making memories in Arcanum; chosen as parade marshals LINDA MOODY
CORRESPONDENT
ARCANUM – Dick and Dee Mathias have been selected to serve as grand marshals for the second annual Christmas Horse Parade on Dec. 8. The event is co-hosted by the Arcanum Area Business Association (AABA) and the Arcanum Athletic Boosters, with activities scheduled throughout the day. Dick was contacted on Thanksgiving by Jason Blackburn of the AABA about being the grand marshal, and said he would talk it over with his wife. She gave her okay. “I didn’t want to say no to Jason, Dick said. “We appreciate this town. We’ve lived here 49 years; 50, next summer. The Mathiases moved to Arcanum from the Salem Mall area. “I have always lived on a farm, said Dee. “And
I love it here. It’s been a good move for us. “Dee’s dad bought this farm and house next to it, said Dick. It was Dee, daughter of the late Howard and Dorothy Ward, who fell in love with their home when she was younger. “I used to come here to basketball games with friends and I always noticed that house, she said. “When dad decided to move, Paul Clark (a Realtor) asked where we wanted to live and I pointed to this house. I never dreamed we could buy it but Paul was a great guy. Dick grew up in Phillipsburg and graduated from high school there in 1956, three years before it closed and became Northmont. The couple met at a basketball game at the old Fairgrounds Coliseum of Dayton and was married in a big ceremony at the Trotwood Church of the Brethren on Dec. 26, 1959.

GREENVILLE – Greenville High School held its NJROTC Pass-in-Review Thursday, performing drills and earning awards with their parents, family members and special guests in attendance. The students also learned they had been chosen to represent Area 3 at Orienteering nationals in California. This year’s Pass-inReview included a visit by special guest and Reviewing OfďŹ cer United States Retired Captain Mike Stiglitz, who spent the morning conducting an ofďŹ cial review and interviews with the cadets. “I’m totally blown away by the community support of this program,â€? Stiglitz said. “It’s a tribute to the community, all the ďŹ ne work the students are doing.â€? Stiglitz served with Capt. Scott Eberwine during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Eberwine joked that
when he ďŹ rst met Stiglitz in Kuwait it was 128 degrees. “Today when I met him, my truck said it was 28 degrees,â€? Eberwine said. Eberwine also made the announcement that Greenville had once again been chosen as one of two schools in Area 3, out of 54 schools, selected to go to the Navy National Orienteering near Los Angeles. “You parents and staff should be proud of them,â€? Eberwine said of the Greenville cadets as he gave a brief report on the accomplishments taking place within the unit. These accomplishments include 3,300 hours of community and school service, sharpening their orienteering skills and representing GHS and the Greenville community at several events including the Color Guard’s participation at a Cincinnati Reds and Columbus Blue Jackets games. Several members of the unit also recently traveled to Columbus to participate in the Ohio School Boards Association’s fall conference.

We have so many friends here. And, they are looking forward to the upcoming Christmas parade in town. “We didn’t get to see the one last year because we were out of town, she said. “The young people on the Arcanum Area Business Association have done a good job for the town. Read more about Dick and Dee Mathias at www. bluebagmedia.com.

He went there in 1963, working in the engineering department, where he did vehicle testing which sent him all over the United States. All the while, he raised cattle and share-cropped, the latter which he still does. “I like to help with things in town,â€? said Dick. “I work at the bean suppers and I’ve been a Lions Club member for 30-some years. I help organize the steak fries at the Darke County Fair for the Lions Club, and I’m there every day during the fair.â€? “I worked at the football ďŹ eld for years, setting up games for Friday nights,â€? GREENVILLE – Rewarding positive behavior at Greenville Middle School has become a community-wide effort. Thanks to about 20 local businesses donating around $1,500 in support of the Positive Behavorial Intervention and Support or PBIS program, students are being recognized for contributions within their classroom as well as showing kindness to their fellow students and school staff. “We do it every year,â€? said school counselor Tiffany Fine. “Bascially our eighth grade Student Leaders are the ones that go out and either call, email or go in person to meet with the businesses who have been sponsors before. Or we tell the kids if they know of someone who would like to sponsor, they can ask them.â€? The Student Leaders also help plan ways to use the donations – rewarding the positive actions of the ďŹ fth through eighth grade students at their school. Last year, donations from businesses went to support the school’s Stand Up Stand Out campaign. “This year we plan to use the money toward awarding the kids for their behavior, attendance and academics,â€? Fine said. Fine said students also will be participating in a Reach Out for Drug Awareness program by utilizing the website, naturalhigh.org. The site uses storytelling to impact young
people. Greenville’s students in grades 5-8 are watching videos posted by other young people who have discovered ways to get their own “natural high as opposed to using drugs. One such story was posted by professional surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost an arm due to a shark attack at age 13. Despite facing adversity, Hamilton went on to become an award-winning athlete, making wise choices along the way. After watching the inspirational videos, Fine said the Greenville students will be “creating their own project using a medium of their choosing, for example writing poetry or songs. The project will begin this week, with students working on them during their scheduled Wave Time and be due at the end of January. Fine is working on bringing in several community members to help judge the projects. She’s also working with the Coalition for a Healthy Darke County to assist with the Reach Out for Drug Awareness projects, which will be on display at the school. Two staff members, Fine said, were assisting with the PBIS projects this year, and include Jamie Neely and Chad Curtis. “Both are the teacher leaders for the Student Leaders. They were phenomenal for getting the students organized and the donations sent in, Fine explained. Another PBIS program, Fine said is the Be Kind program, which rewards one student

noon to three years with the Ohio Department of Corrections for arson. “The state (Darke County Assistant Prosecutor Jim Bennett) proved beyond a reasonable doubt,â€? said Darke County Common Pleas Court Judge Jonathan P. Hein said, the defendant’s guilt. Hein said after reviewing the evidence, he found Yohey guilty of setting the cushions of a deck chair and a lawn swing on ďŹ re at the Sherwood Forest trailer home of his former girlfriend. The ďŹ re took place in the early morning hours of Aug. 2. Yohey’s attorney, Randall Breaden, suggested Hein give consideration to the fact that the victim’s car was not parked at the residence at the time of the ďŹ re, stating that’s what led his client to know she wasn’t in the structure at the time, making it a less offensive act. Hein gave Yohey the opportunity to speak. “I deeply regret what I did,â€? he said, addressing the judge. “You know as well as I do time (in prison) isn’t going to do me any good.â€? He continued: “I want the court to know I can’t sit here and make excuses for my actions.â€? Yohey also stated he believed “counseling would do me good instead of time in the joint.â€? The defendant said he had been participating the the T-CAP program and had spoken with counselors. He also addressed his “abandonmentâ€? issues.
“That’s a hard one for me. I went through that with my mom. With my dad. That’s why I took it so hard when she (the victim) did what she did. Hein spoke to Yohey again, noting the “depth of his anger that was evident on the two-hour interrogation tape played in its entirety during the second day of the arson trial. “The only person who can get ahead of this is you, Hein said. Yohey will receive 56 days credit for time served in the Darke County Jail. He also was ordered to pay restitution totaling $1,266.01, must register as an arson
offender for life after he is released from prison. Prior to the two-day trial, Yohey pleaded guilty to counts 3 through 8 of the indictment, which included slashing the victim’s tires, throwing a landscape brick through the trailer’s bedroom window while she was in bed, spray painting grafďŹ ti on both her car and trailer, and telecommunications harassment, which included posting inappropriate comments on Facebook concerning the victim. Yohey can be heard admitting to the vandalism and social media postings during the two-hour interrogation tape.

I’m scared to take any more time off
I have a few more vacation days I need to take before the end of the year to get some so-called “time off.â€? The last few days I took were anything but “time off.â€? I didn’t get to sit around binge watching Netix. I didn’t get to lie in bed until noon. I didn’t get to make messes and not clean them up. I thought this vacation was going to be different. I thought for sure I was going to get some much valuable “me time.â€? I thought I was going to get to watch the entire OSU vs. the team up north football game without interruption. I was happily watching the number 1 defense (hahaha) get dismantled by an incredible Buckeye offense when it happened. I got the phone call. My wife had taken our daughter back to school the night before and de-

car. The ďŹ rst time was my fault when I didn’t tighten the lug nuts all the way after she had a at tire. I’m not taking the blame for this one. I know it was an inconvenience, but it could have been much worse. We were blessed that she stayed with my daughter the night before or she would have been stranded at midnight and it could have been a lot colder, raining or snowing. Yeah, I know. That was just one of the vacation days. What did I do the other days? My wife wants us to remodel my youngest daughter’s bedroom, which means ripping up carpet, sanding the wood oor, painting, etc. I’m using the term “usâ€? rather loosely. So far, “usâ€? has only been me. But I’m sure she will be happy to go shopping for new furniture to make it a team project. (Guess who will be putting the furniture together.) If this is what time off is like, I’d rather be working.

I already knew the answer. I’m on vacation. It wasn’t going to be something simple. It was the wheel. She really didn’t need to go look, but honestly, what else was she going to do for the next hour and a half while I’m driving up to meet her. The studs holding the wheel were completely sheared off. I stopped at the parts store and got everything I needed and then some. I despise working on cars, but working on a car along a busy interstate is even further down the list of things I enjoy. After a lot of prayer, busted knuckles and chanting every one of my dad’s sayings when he was ďŹ xing our cars (my dad is a preacher so they were actually good quotes), I ďŹ nally got her back on the road. Just to make sure I didn’t kill her, I drove her car part of the way home. The fear was real. This was the second time she has had a wheel come off of her

cided to stay up there because she had a headache and didn’t feel ďŹ t to drive. It was a smart move on her part. Now she was on her way home and heading south on I-75. She was just north of Lima when my vacation went to pot. Okay, Okay – it wasn’t great for her either. “Hey, I have a at tire,â€? she said. Since we don’t have that service that will give you a tow or change a tire for you, and knowing there is no way she is going to ďŹ gure out how to change a tire I did the right thing. “Okay, it’s going to take me some time to get there, but I’m coming,â€? I told her. Before I could put pants on I got a second phone call. “My tire is in the ditch,â€? she said. I asked if she was sure. “There are two of them in there; I think one of them is mine.â€? Was it just the tire or did the entire wheel come off? “I don’t know,â€? she responded. “Could you go look. It’s kind of important,â€? I asked.

Lady Railroaders crowned Annie Oakley Shootout Champs GAYLEN BLOSSER
SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com
GREENVILLE – The Bradford Lady Railroaders took advantage of aggressive defensive play and cold shooting from the Lady Wave to win the 2018 Annie Oakley Shootout by a 49-28 score. “I was happy with our performance,” said Bradford coach Chris Besecker. “Our aggressive defense is something that we need because of our lack of size. You get past B (5’11” Bianca Keener), we’re small and we’ve got to extend our defense and get after people and create some offense with our defense.” The Lady Railroaders varsity squad dresses one senior, no juniors, five freshman and five sophomores. Of the five freshman and five sophomore team members, S. Miller
and Cassie Mead stand the tallest at 5’7”. “Bradford is going to win a lot of basketball games this year,” Greenville coach Rachel Kerns said. “They’re tough, they play hard but I don’t think that we gave our best effort, our best game, meaning as far as finishing and finishing at the free throw line.” The Lady Roaders took an 11-8 lead after one period of play with Bianca Keener scoring six opening quarter points for Bradford and Haleigh Mayo draining two triples to lead the Lady Wave with six points. The Bradford Girls got five second quarter points from freshman Austy Miller including a trey, four points each from freshman Rylee Canan and sophomore Skipp Miller good for 13 points while the Lady Wave was held to three
points, all coming on 3-11 shooting at the free throw line sending the teams to the break with the Lady Roaders leading 24-11. Bradford took the third period by a 12-11 score to lead 36-22 heading to the final period of play. Jada Garland paced the Lady Wave with two three-pointers good for 6-points while A. Miller was leading Bradford with 6-ponts. The Lady Railroaders sticky defense continued to plague Greenville in the final period as Bradford would take the quarter by a 13-6 score to earn the win. Missing from the Lady Wave’s lineup with an injury was the team’s floor general and 2017-18 leading scorer and assist leader, Morgan Gilbert. “One through five on the court Bradford really competed,” said Kerns. “I can’t say that I always

had five girls out there competing and that is the part that we mentally have to get over especially with Morgan being our right now. I think that is our biggest disadvantage for what she brings to the team, that mental toughness part. We just have to figure out how we can get there.”
Versailles Lady Tigers down Delphos St. John’s BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com
VERSAILLES – The Versailles Lady Tigers exploded out to a 17-0 lead over the visiting Delphos St. John’s Lady Bluejays on their way to a 77-49 win giving Coach Jacki Stonebraker her 301st career coaching win at Versailles. The Lady Tigers used under 3-1/2 minutes to put the opening 17 points on the board with Coach Stonebraker going to her bench early and often over the balance of the game. “That was a really nice start,” said Stonebraker. “We were moving the ball well, we were getting up and down the court really well, filling the passing lanes – and then we hit a lot of good shots in the first quarter.” Versailles led after one quarter of play 27-5 with the Lady Bluejays battling back to score 16 second quarter points while the Lady Tigers were adding 18 points sending the teams to the break with
Versailles holding a comfortable 45-21 advantage. “We kind of went cold for a little bit and kind of settled,” Stonebraker noted. “I felt like we settled and we didn’t go out and play to our potential the second quarter.” The Lady Bluejays took the third quarter 17-14 with Versailles taking the final period of play 18-11 to earn the early season 77-49 win. “A lot of good ball movement and there was no really set plays out there,” Stonebraker said of fourth quarter play. “We just said – you have to move the ball around the perimeter, you have to cut, you have to make passes and just move – move to the open spots and the girls started playing. It looked like they played together a lot better in that fourth quarter.” The Lady Tigers pulled down 50 rebounds on the night, 18 coming at the offensive end. “That’s a lot of rebounds,” Stonebraker
noted. “We did a nice job on the boards. I was glad to see that stat so high because we need to keep pushing, we need to keep filling those lanes and getting to those offensive boards.” Versailles’ 6’3” junior Brooke Stonebraker, daughter of Coach Stonebraker led the Lady Tigers with 15 points. “She did a nice job,” Coach Stonebraker said when questioned of Brooke’s play following the game. “She’s getting better. She keeps the ball high which is really important when you’re a post player. She is really long, so she can get to a lot of balls because of her length.” First year starter for the Lady Tigers, Danielle Kunk is catching the attention of Coach Stonebraker. “She is getting a lot more comfortable – her shot opened up a lot tonight,” Stonebraker noted. “Now that it has opened up I would like to see her take it to the hole a little
Bradford made 19 2-point field goals and was 8-14 at the line good for 57 percent shooting. Greenville was limited to three 2-point field goals and made 10-26 free throws for 38 percent. Austy Miller led Bradford with 14-points and Skipp Miller added 13. Mayo paced Greenville with 13-points. “There’s two kids – tremendous athletes and great basketball players,” Besecker said of the Miller sisters. “They’re competitors above all else and they have one speed and its full throttle and they never let up. When you play on your toes like our kids do and those two
lead the way – when opportunity knocks you’re in a position to take advantage of it.” “It was great to play Bradford this early but we were our biggest enemy,” noted Kerns. “We left so many shots out there, so many free throws, but give Bradford credit, they played really hard today.” LADY RAILROADERS – A. Arcanum Lady Trojans win big over Ansonia GAYLEN BLOSSER
SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com
ANSONIA – The Arcanum Lady Trojans defeated the Ansonia Lady Tigers 66-34 in a Thursday night Cross County Conference basketball game. “I’m real happy with how things are going so far,â€? said Arcanum ďŹ rst year coach Michael Dean. “We just need to keep improving on them. We share the ball – we play unselďŹ sh.â€? “We knew Arcanum was pretty good coming in,â€? said
Ansonia coach Jim Bolin. “It seems like they shot 70 percent and it seemed like we didn’t hit anything.â€? Eight Lady Trojans got in the ďŹ rst quarter scoring column led by freshman Taylor Gray’s six points to take a 23-7 lead after one period of play. Arcanum freshmen, Hailey Unger and Gray led the team in second quarter scoring with six points each with the Lady Trojans taking the period 15-7 sending the teams to the break with Arcanum holding a 38-14 advantage. Lady Trojans freshman
Madelyn Fearon paced Arcanum with six third quarter points while Ansonia’s lone senior, Trinity Henderson was leading the Lady Tigers with eight points. “I can’t say enough about the youth that we have on the court, said Dean. “Our freshmen – it’s a phenomenal class. They really step it up when they are called upon. They push my older girls, those upper classmen. Period No. 3 went to Arcanum by a 16-11 score to give Arcanum a 54-25 lead after three.
Black records 100th win with Lady Indians BY CLINTON RANDALL CORRESPONDENT
UNION CITY, Ind. With a three-point victory on the road in Richmond last Tuesday night, Union City girls basketball head coach Sarah Black recorded her 100th career win. After a very successful career playing for Union City during her high school years, she now has 14-years under her belt as a coach. Coach Black was an assistant coach with the Jay County and Winchester programs before returning to her alma mater to take over as the Lady Indians head coach in 2011. Since being head coach, the Lady Indians have won the Union City Holiday Tournament twice, conference champions for three seasons and back-to-back sectional champs. For the ďŹ rst time in school history, Coach Black and her team brought home a semi-state

The ďŹ nal quarter of play saw Ansonia’s Henderson hitting her fourth and ďŹ fth three pointers of the night, but it was the Lady Trojans taking the ďŹ nal period 12-9 giving the visitors a convincing 66-34 win. “I’m getting good minutes across the board with all those kids,â€? Coach Dean stated. “We have a deep bench and we’re going to use it. We’re one team and on any given night I can put ďŹ ve on that court out of that 16 and do some damage against teams and that is what we want.â€? Gray led Arcanum and all scorers with a game high 21 points. Henderson led the Lady Tigers with 19 points including ďŹ ve three pointers. title and were the IHSAA Class A state runner-up in the 2016-17 season. “The state ďŹ nals was a dream of mine when I played and continued to be a dream as I stepped into the realms of coaching. That experience and the trip with that group was beyond anything I could have ever imagined,â€? Coach Black told The Early Bird. “Everything along the ride of the state ďŹ nals trip could never be replaced and it is something that so few get to experience,â€? she added. “I am so thankful I was able to share it with people I love and care for and be a small part of something so tremendous and creating memories and experiences for a group of young ladies that will last a lifetime.â€? Her passion for the game takes coaching way beyond being just a job for Sarah...it is part of her life. Most everyone that comes into contact with Coach Black, both on and off the court, are inspired for all the dedication and love for not only the game, but her players, coaches, the community and most of all her family. “I am extremely proud of where Sarah has brought our girls basketball program,â€? said UC principal and Sarah’s husband Aaron Black. “When she played, the program was prominent and was always considered a threat...now as a coach, she has brought that back to Union City.â€? For all the success she has had thus far, Coach
Black has a long list of people she is thankful for, including her high school coach Kirk Comer, her husband and parents, all of her hardworking assistant coaches and players... just to name a few. Most importantly, Sarah knows that without God in her life, none of this would have ever been possible. Her faith is shared by many of her players that started a prayer circle in 2016, with the opposing team at center court, at the conclusion of every game... win or lose. This Godly gesture of sportsmanship has since been adopted by many other programs. Former player Kora Kerns was even awarded the Gary Horner Sportsmanship Award for initiating the prayer circle, along with her sister Ellie. It goes without saying that Coach Black’s success goes far beyond winning basketball games...and the positive impact on her players has helped them be successful in life as well. UNION CITY – The Mississinawa Valley Lady Blackhawks opened regular season play shorthanded with a 54-30 loss to the visiting Parkway Lady Panthers basketball team. The Lady Hawks took the court saddled with their two starting guards on the bench with injuries playing a big role in the loss to the aggressive Mercer County school. “We just have to build,â€? said MV ďŹ rst year coach Michael Paige. “We had both of our point guards out so we were playing our ďŹ rst game without either one of our point guards. We had to bring one of the JV girls up to play point guard.â€?
First game jitters and Parkway full-court pressure had the visitors leading 4315 after three quarters of play before MV battled back to take the ďŹ nal period by a 15-11 score. “It was just ďŹ rst game jitters,â€? Paige stated. “That’s all it was. We just need to get back to practice and refocus.â€? “We saw some positives tonight,â€? continued Coach Paige. “Mattie (Hiestand), our freshman came in and ďŹ nally started shooting the ball in the fourth quarter. She settled in and scored six points in like 30-seconds. If we can get her going we are going to take away a lot from it. Kya (Lavy) also played really well. She played aggressive, she played physical. We just have to get her the

GREENVILLE – Tom Everhart, who usually deejays at the Memory Lane Monday Dance at the VFW in Greenville, treated visitors to a karaoke competition this past week. Rockin’ With Rocky (Roxanne Grant and husband Jim) provided the entertainment. Eleven entries performed in the second annual karaoke contest, with 10 of them being judged.
Winners of the event and sharing the $75 for firstplace tie were Jim Short and Michael Silver. Also among winners were Everhart himself, who placed third; and fourth was another tie with Tammy and the Gang and Jerry Westfall sharing the prize money. Others who competed in the contest were Jamie Moody, Deb Beyke, Nikki and the Girls, a duet with Becky Steiner and Holly Treon; and the Pop-Up Girls. Forty-five people were in attendance.
Benefit will help Nicely get wheelchair LINDA MOODY
CORRESPONDENT
GREENVILLE – The next event for the Memory Lane Monday Dance, held each Monday afternoon at the Greenville VFW, 219 N. Ohio St., Greenville, will be a benefit for Angel Nicely, who was seriously injured in an automobile accident in 2012. The dance, sponsored weekly by Everhart’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Show, will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at the VFW. The accident left Nicely paralyzed from the chest down. “She has come a long way since then, but could really use everyone’s help to purchase this amazing wheelchair,” said her mother. “She would be able to maneuver around her yard and even
stand up to do things around her house. She lives by herself and struggles everyday with pain, but still continues to manage around her house, taking care of it herself. Any amount of money you could spare would be greatly appreciated.” The family’s goal is to raise $12,000, and donations can also be made at any Greenville National Bank, by depositing it to the “Help Angel Standup” fundraiser account. Donations for Angel will be taken at the door, and there will be auctions of merchandise during the dance. “Please come and support Angel in purchasing a Draco wheel chair,” said Everhart, who organizes these dances. “Food and beverage will be available for purchase.” For more information, call 547-1905.
Coalition supports local youth with grants DARKE COUNTY — For a second year, the Coalition for a Healthy Darke County (Coalition), as a 501(C)3 non-profit will offer grants for K-12 youth substance abuse prevention education in Darke County. Coalition President Sharon Deschambeau and Darke County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Mark Whittaker attended a statewide meeting hosted by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine in 2017 that was focused on fighting the drug epidemic in Ohio. “The 1,600 attendees listened to Attorney General DeWine present the recommendations of the Ohio Joint Study Committee on Drug Use Prevention Education. The group’s report offers a plan to incorporate drug education in schools at all grade levels,” said Deschambeau. “It was apparent from
the findings of the study and discussion throughout the meeting that our communities must start the substance abuse prevention education process early. Some Ohio communities are educating as early as pre-school.” Deschambeau also serves as the president of the Darke County Chamber of Commerce and indicated that investing in substance abuse prevention education for our children at an early age may benefit our businesses and communities in the long term. “Perhaps we will see a difference in the health of our future workforce in Darke County in the next 10-12 years by starting substance abuse prevention education now,” she said. The grant application can be found at the Coalition website https://coalitiondarkecounty.com/. The deadline to apply is Dec. 31.
UNION CITY – Samantha Chrismer, an Eaton High School graduate serves as the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks Athletic Trainer. Chrismer played soccer for the Lady Eagles for two years before an injury sidelined the Eaton athlete bringing her high school sports career to a close. “I played soccer in school and unfortunately I got injured my junior and senior year that put me out for the rest of high school,” said Chrismer. “That is kind of what got me into athletic training.” Chrismer is pleased Darke County athletes have an opportunity to remain local at Wayne HealthSports when medical attention is needed, reducing travel time and expenses traveling to Dayton for identical services. “Samantha was a student Athletic Trainer at Eaton High School under the supervision of Lori

Oda, ATC,” said James Beyke, PT, MPT, Director of Rehabilitation Services. “Lori now serves a management role with Wayne HealthSports. Samantha’s early exposure to athletic training in high school was very influential in her career path.” “When the position became available at Mississinawa Valley, Lori reached out to some of her contacts. We were very fortunate that Samantha had graduated in the summer of 2018 from Wright State University and was interested in our position.”
With the recently married MV trainer moving from the area, a smooth transition was made with Chrismer filling the position. “We had an experienced Athletic Trainer in the position at Mississinawa Valley and I was concerned that it would be difficult to find a suitable replacement,” Beyke stated. “Samantha has transitioned very well into her role at MV, I am really pleased with the feedback we have received from Chloe Shell, Athletic Director.” Today’s Athletic Train-
ers play an important role working with coaches while returning injured players back to the court or field in a timely, yet safe manor. “Samantha has a genuine interest in her student athletes and coaches,” Beyke said. “I am really pleased with her initiative. I believe she will do a great job at Mississinawa Valley.” “Wayne HealthCare is doing a huge expansion which is exciting,” noted Chrismer. “We are going to be able to offer great services in the new facility – I’m excited about that.” The Wayne HealthSports program includes Versailles, Greenville, Ansonia, Tri Village, Mississinawa Valley and Franklin Monroe schools. “Jim (Beyke) is such a good resource and he’s such a knowledgeable clinician as well,” concluded Chrismer. “Jim and Lori him make it such a safe place to communicate with them for any and all situations. Nothing is too big or too small. They have been fantastic.”
Kiwanis Aktion Club wins with scrapbook GREENVILLE – With the completion of over 1,100 hours of service/volunteer hours in the 20172018 club year, Greenville Kiwanis Aktion Club wanted to highlight their accomplishments by entering the scrapbook portion of The Aktion Club district contests. The club averaged a monthly reporting of 112.5 hours of service with 35 members participating in 13 services projects. Aktion Club is a Kiwanis – Family Club for Adults with Disabilities. The club was sponsored by Greenville Kiwanis Club in 2016 and began with 47 members. Cheryl Pressly and Sue Huston, employees of Darke County Board of Developmental Disabilities – Darke DD, are co-advisors of the club. They support members in developing service leadership projects that benefit the community. “It is important that our projects are member driven. As advisors, we are here to support them in their mission,” said Huston. The club seems to have evolved into two general directions based on members’ interests - recycling and helping people. One member wanted to “go green” and learn more about recycling, so they partnered with The Darke County Solid Waste District. Their largest project is collecting caps/lids to be recycled into benches.
They have collected enough for 20 benches which will be secured throughout the county on the bike path this spring. Aktion Club members are also very passionate about helping people – they have many projects that involve helping children both locally and internationally. Locally, they have purchased backpacks full of school supplies, brand new bicycles for Christmas, held annual food drives and have adopted several families during the Christmas season. Internationally, they raised over $500 to purchase 15 bed kits for Sleeping Children Around the World. An ongoing project that is important to our members is the Chemo-Bag Project. The club raises money through fundraising to purchase bags and fill them with items. To date, members have delivered nearly 40 bags to Greenville’s Dayton Physician’s Network office. They visit with people as they are receiving treatment. Sam Ploch, Aktion club president, has personally delivered bags and is very proud of this project. “Our project is very touching to a lot of good people in need. It is amazing to hear all the stories of their journey. We just hope that we can give them a little hope and wish them the best.” “We couldn’t do the work we do if it weren’t for
our partnerships with local Day Services and independent providers. Art Sense, Your Happy Place, and Person Centered Services as well as several providers and parents assist in not only the driving members to the meetings, but also the coordination and oversight of many of the projects. It is truly a group effort and we are grateful for the collaboration,” said Huston. One such collaboration was completing the scrapbook. It was a monumental project and the members worked hard to decide the layout and design of each page. “We were thrilled to win first place at the district level and then have the opportunity to compete
internationally. When we got the news that we won first place internationally, our members were ecstatic,” said Pressly. The scrapbook is currently on display at Darke DD and the club hopes to highlight it at various locations throughout the county. It is quite impressive to see an entire year of activity and all of their hard work. To see many of the pictures used in the scrapbook, like them on Facebook at The Darke County Board of Developmental Disabilities. To learn more about Aktion Club contact Sue Huston at 459-4629/sueh@ darkedd.org or Cheryl Pressly at 459-4627/cherylp@darkedd.org.
GREENVILLE – On Wednesday, Dec. 5, 5-7 p.m., Tribute Funeral Homes’ Greenville Campus, 1000 North Broadway, will once again host its Winter Open House. “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” owner Eric Fee states. “Every year we are excited to open our doors to the
community and celebrate not only the Christmas season, but also the blessing of being in a community like ours. It is a great time of year to reflect on the blessings around us and the people that made them so special” shares Fee. Everyone is invited to join the friends and
staff of Tribute Funeral Homes for a night of celebration and remembrance at the Winter Open House. Festivities include horse drawn carriage rides through the park, live Christmas music by Noah Back, enjoy a cup of hot cocoa, photos with Santa Claus, or listen to the Greenville Wavaires
as they serenade us with classic Christmas carols. “We enjoy bringing our community together to reflect on the past year, those we have loved and the hope and faith that the season brings” shares Fee. “Come and join us on December 5th as we pay tribute to all things that make our lives so special.”
President Sam Ploch and member Paula Laney display the trophy, certificate and patch awarded to the club.

CBC announces December blood drives
Shown are the Edison State students that will present a program on bullying at the Greenville Public Library.
Library hosts bullying program on Dec. 11 GREENVILLE – Five “Fundamentals of Communication students at Edison State Community College, Darke County Campus, will offer a presentation addressing the issues of bullying on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Greenville Public Library. Dawn Cleere, Hope Byrum, Baylee Petry, Renee Netzley and Christopher Bucklew will talk about the different types of bullying, its impact on victims and different ways to address the problem. The program is a culmination of 16 weeks of preparation in public speaking, research, and teamwork. While statistics may vary somewhat, all sources agree bullying is a major problem in the U.S. For instance, one national anti-bullying site reports that 90 percent of fourth through eighth graders report being victims of bullying, with over 3.2 million victims reported every year. Approximately 160,000 teens skip school daily due to bullying, and
one in 10 will eventually drop out of school. Surveys done in three Edison State communications classrooms indicate nearly two-thirds of the students have been bullied, about a third have actually participated in bullying and almost without exception students have observed bullying (referred to as bystanders). In addition to the library presentation, six other Edison State communications teams have been invited to Greenville Middle School and Ansonia Local Schools to talk with students, ďŹ rst through eighth grades, about the harmful effects of bullying. Their focus will be directed to the students, while the library program will be directed toward adults and students. What are the harmful effects of bullying? Why does it happen? What can victims and bystanders do about it? These are just a few of the questions the Edison State team hopes to address. Registration is not required.

DARKE COUNTY – Darke County will have several holiday season community blood drives. Community Blood Center is celebrating the season by offering a warm gift of colorful holiday socks to everyone who registers to donate. Schedule an appointment online at www. DonorTime.com or call 1-800-388-GIVE. The holiday season is an especially challenging time of year for maintaining the area blood supply. If you must miss an appointment to donate please reschedule as soon as you can. CBC is expanding the opportunity to donate platelets and plasma at select community blood drives. Platelets are the cells that control bleeding while plasma is the uid that maintains blood pressure. Both are vital for the treatment of cancer, trauma, organ transplant, and burn patients. New platelet donors are in high demand, especially those with blood types A, AB, or B positive. Find out more at www.GivingBlood.org or talk to an apheresis specialist at (937) 461-3220. The following blood drives are open to the community; appointments are encouraged. In her free time, Mindy volunteers for the Clubhouse in Troy, Concord Elementary, and a local animal shelter. “I would like to thank my scholarship donors for believing in my future,” said Bach. “I plan to stay involved with the Edison State community and hope to inspire other students the way that the Edison State staff has inspired me.” Mouhamadou Faye, an international student from Senegal, Africa, is majoring in chemical engineering with an emphasis on chemical processes. He plans to transfer to Purdue University after graduating from Edison State and hopes to one day pursue a career in the petroleum industry. Faye speaks French, English, and his local language.
