We feel it might safer to take the rest of the month off and then see where things stand.” “We will evaluate the situation after a couple of weeks, but most likely the library will stay closed until the first of the year,” she said, adding, “We don’t know which way the COVID pandemic is going to go, if things will get better or worse.”

Further, the library announced it’s drop box is closed for patrons returning books and other checked-out materials. “The reason for that is, our drop box is small and can’t hold a lot, and if we don’t empty it regularly, it overflows, and we don’t want the staff to be handling materials right now because we have to quarantine those materials

when they are returned,” Halley said. She reiterated that the library does not impose fines on overdue materials and hopes patrons will understand the reasons for the library’s abrupt closure. “We appreciate the public’s patience and very much regret that this has happened and we looking forward to serving them again,” she said.

Warner & House 25th year on air

Rammel signs with Walsh University

By Gaylen Blosser DarkeCountyMedia.com

GREENVILLE – Greenville alums Alex Warner and Ty House are in their 25th telecasting season having telecast nearly 300 Greenville High School sporting events. “We do this because we can bring the games to life for those who can’t attend in person and to make memories for the student athletes,” said Warner. “We’re just two guys who bleed Green and White and have the gift of gab. We’ll keep trying until we get it right, we’ll try to do better the next game.” Warner, class of ’67 and House ’74 were both multi-letter winner, each serving as a Greenville school board member, both have been honored as Homecoming Parade Grand Marshals and serve as cochairs of the GHS Athletic Hall of Fame committee. Nick House, the son of Ty was a star senior point guard for ’96-‘97 Green Wave basketball team. “We try to present games like listeners are sitting in the stands with us,” House stated. “One game at St. Henry stands out. We were being blown out by 30 points at the half so we passed the mic back and forth to fans in the top row and had them do it in the second half with us.” The duo started the 1996—1997 season after Greenville Public Access Television was founded. Warner had experience doing play-byplay at WDRK in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s while working with such notables at Gary Bowman, Delbert Braund and Ed Crawford. “I enjoy doing the games with Alex,” said House. “He is a good partner to have for many years. I have just enjoyed sports and athletics and being part of it. We do it because we like to do it. We have a fantastic time meeting the fans and we have had a lot of support from the Athletic Department and the community and certainly the fans.” Notable Lady Wave teams include the District finalist for ’01 and ’02 under the direction of Coach Dave Peltz. Individuals remembered include: Ashley Brown, Brittany Runner, Lindsay Bennett, Nicole Harrison, Carrie Hones, Rachel Fiely, Macie Blinn, Megan Galloway, Haleigh Behnken, Morgan Gilbert and many more. GREENVILLE – Isabelle Rammel to continue her education while running cross country for Walsh University. “I chose Walsh because I am going to get to improve in all aspects of my life,” said Rammel. “I am so excited for this next opportunity to just keep improving on my fitness and improving as a runner.” “I am super excite to see Isabelle get this opportunity to pursue her passion at such a strong program as Walsh,” said Greenville Cross Country Coach, Stephanie Lind. “She is going to continue to develop. Her strength has always been in the longer races so I am excited to see what she can do for them and how she can help support their team.” “What can you say about Isabelle that hasn’t already been said,” stated Greenville High School Principal, Stan Hughes. “She is hard working, she is talented, she is intelligent and all those things add up. She is also humble about all the accomplishments that she has done academically and athletically. We are really proud of her here at Greenville High School.” “Isabelle is what you are looking for in an athlete,” Greenville Athletic Direc-

years. An outstanding team with memorable players like Clay Guillozet, Aaron Balsbaugh, Allen Tabler, Cody Preston, Isaiah Gable and Aaron Rich. Other individuals include Craig Wohlgamuth, Matt Hamilton and Eric Blakely along with numerous others. “We have been here long enough to see another generation of kids coming through that we knew as athletes,” House said. Some of the great Trotwood-Madison teams stand-out along with opposing players like Andre Gordon of Sidney, Jamar Butler of Lima Shawnee and the Ahrens brothers, Kyle and Justin from Versailles. With 25 years of broadcasting, the two GHS alumni never thought about their ‘on air’ work would play an important role in the 2020-2021 Corona Virus pandemic season. “I never thought it would be this way,” Warner said. “We like to be the eyes and ears for people that can’t get to the games. We want to describe it like we are sitting in the stands with them.” “People will say ‘I didn’t get a chance to see my grandson play but I got to see him on TV’,” added House. Alex and Ty gave a special thanks to the student cameramen and Lori Hoover from the GHS Interactive Media class at GHS, coaches and administrators, players all of whom even in lean years always gave the effort. Randall Bowman, Brian Stickel and Jody Flommersfeld who helped with the color part of the telecasts when needed. To their wives, Kathy and Lita for putting up with their hobby and most of all to all the fans who view the games. “It’s Ty Warner Communications,” both gentlemen chimed in with a chuckle. “It’s been fun and enjoyable.”

tor Aaron Shaffer said. “Dedicated to her sport, dedicated to her teammates, her coaches and ultimately at the end of it dedication in the classroom.” Rammel, the daughter of Katie and Bill Rammel plans to study Pre-Law while at Walsh. “I am going to get to study Pre-Law at a really well renowned university surrounded by likeminded individuals,” Rammel stated. “I definitely wouldn’t have this opportunity without the program at Greenville that I have been in because success isn’t an accident.” “I have done a lot of work but that work wouldn’t be possible without all the opportunities and support that the program and my family has given me,” continued Rammel. “I am really thankful for that. There is not a single person I have talked to about running that hasn’t been completely supportive – that is one of the cool parts about being

in this community.” Rammel’s high school career includes qualifying all four year for Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Regionals, two years at State as well as earning the Wendy’s High school Heisman for Greenville City Schools. “Isabelle is about as rounded as a kid as you are ever going to get.” Shaffer said. “There are kids that meet up to the same level but you can’t get higher than Isabelle in terms of how to do it. She does it the right way, she is as polite and respectful a kid as you could ever meet - but she is also as competitive as you could ever imagine.” “We have sent quite a few athletes off to run in college so it is just nice to see them get recognized for their years of hard work they put into running,” Coach Lind noted. “I know they are going to work hard for their new school just like they did here – so it is exciting”

VERSAILLES – The Arcanum Lady Trojans defeated the Versailles Lady Tiger 45-40 in a non-conference matchup between the Darke County Schools. “It was a battle,” said Versailles coach, Tracy White. “It was a good game.” Versailles opened play with a 10-8 lead after one period of play with Abby Stammen knocking down 6 Lady Tigers’ points and Arcanum’s Hailey Unger adding 6 points for the Lady Trojans. “Wasn’t the prettiest of games but hats off to Coach White because that definitely wasn’t the same

team we saw on film,” Arcanum coach Abbey Moore said. “They came out with desire and composure and we didn’t.” Madelyn Fearon led Arcanum with 9 second quarter points while Unger was adding 5 points and Taylor Gray 2 points to help the Lady Trojans put a little daylight between the teams with Arcanum outscoring the home team 16-9 sending the teams to the halftime break with Arcanum leading 24-19. “Basketball is a game of runs and whoever can stop that run the quickest or can get the momentum switch is normally the one that ends up on top,” Coach White stated. Arcanum made it a 36-28 lead after three quarters on

the court taking the third quarter of play by a 12-9 score. The Lady Trojans made it an early fourth quarter double digit 38-28 lead with 7:12 showing followed by a 10-2 Versailles scoring run to make it a 2 point 40-38 Arcanum lead with 1:03 remaining on the game clock. The Lady Trojans took the final minute of play by a 5-2 score to earn the early season win. “Anytime we have an opportunity to hit the floor this year it’s important and to be able to come here and get the win – we are fortunate to get to play,” said Coach Moore. “We have to play our level moving forward - that’s what we need to get better on.”

DR. WILLIAM J. WILLIAMS ARCANUM — Dr. William J. Williams, PhD, passed away in his home in Arcanum, Ohio, December 6, 2020, with his family by his side. He was born on May 9, 1935 in Rio Grande, Ohio, to the late David H. and Thelma L. (Lackey) Williams, joining a family of Welsh farmers and infamous storytellers. After graduating from Rio Grande College (University), he went on to complete a BEE from The Ohio State University and worked as a research engineer for Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus. It was in Columbus where he met his wife, Carol F. Gibson, whom he was with for 59 years. Early on, they moved to Iowa, where he completed an MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of Iowa. In the early 60’s, they moved to Ann Arbor, Mich. where he completed an MS in Physiology at the University of Michigan (1966), joined the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science and then became a Professor by 1974 at U of M. Bill’s career in electrical, computer, and bioengineering took him across the country and eventually across the globe, having taught at universities in Singapore, Australia, France, and England, collaborating with scientists around the world, developing patents, and

writing hundreds of publications and textbooks. He was a visiting scientist in Physiology at Johns Hopkins University and truly enjoyed his research on whale and dolphin communication at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Bill had significant interest in timefrequency distributions and applications in nonstationary signal analysis, as well as a true passion for biological problems within the theory and application of signal processing and communication techniques. He retired from U of M just to start a business, Quantum Signal, with his previous student, colleague, and dear friend, Mitch Rohdes. This business joined Ford Motor Company in 2019. It would be impossible to fully capture the depth of his career with these brief words. He was a son of a farmer who wanted more than farming for Bill’s life. Bill definitely succeeded with his wish. Bill and Carol adopted two daughters, Gwen E Williams and Sarah E (Williams) Rock, providing them wonderful lives filled with opportunity, fellowship, adventure, and endless love and support. He was an avid gardener, adored Apple/MacIntosh computers, and was definitely the guy to have on your team in Trivial Pursuit. He spoke a half dozen languages, loved history, and enjoyed travel-

ing. Lifelong friends were made through the University, both with colleagues and students around the world. More friendships were built when Bill and Carol bought a second home in Green Valley, Ariz., where Bill was known as “the Mountain Man.” They both loved the sun, fellowship, and adventures out west. They left Ann Arbor and moved to Arcanum, Ohio, in 2015, following continued decline in health and Bill’s battle with dementia. Their daughter, Sarah, and her family lived close by and took over the job as caretaker, which made it possible for them to remain in their home. Carol died in May 2020, passing away at home in the midst of this pandemic with Bill, her children, and grandchildren by her side. This heartbreak was overwhelming for Bill, challenging him on a daily basis. With the help from Visiting Angels and State of the Heart Care, Bill was able to remain at home until the end of his life. The family is forever grateful for the compassion and care from their staff. Bill leaves behind his sister, Cora Margaret (Peggy) and her husband Roger Baker, as well as his dear great aunt, Margaret Hunter. He has four grandchildren with Sarah and Lewis Rock: Riley, Devin, Shelby, and Brenna. He has two grandchildren with

ROSS A. LOHRBER Gwen Williams: Kassandra and Morgan, as well as two great-grandchildren, Keegan and Kiera. Bill leaves behind a wealth of scientific building blocks for the world, a trove of memories for his many friends and colleagues, and countless stories and shared wisdom for his family to treasure forever. With broken but grateful hearts, we say Hwyl fawr (“goodbye” in Welsh). A celebration of Bill’s life will take place Saturday, December 12, 2020, 12 p.m., at Tribute Funeral Homes, Greenville Campus. For everyone’s safety, the service will be for immediate family only. Bill’s service will be live streamed at www.facebook.com/tributefuneralhomes. Immediate family may gather at the funeral home for a private visitation, from 11 a.m. until the start of the service at 12 p.m. Bill will be laid to rest with Carol Sunday, December 13, 2020, at 2 p.m., in the Vega Cemetery, Jackson County, Ohio, alongside many of his dear ancestors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Visiting Angels, 15 W. National Rd #1, Englewood, Ohio 45322, or State of the Heart Care, 1350 North Broadway Street, Greenville, Ohio 45331. Online condolences and Hugs-From-Home may be shared with the family by visiting www.tributefuneralhomes.com.

Financial Achievement Services to host Christmas Card Drive Staff report

GREENVILLE — The team at Financial Achievement Services invites the community to participate in its Christmas Card Drive for residents at the Brethren Retirement Community. The card drive aims to bring holiday cheer to the residents who have faced a uniquely challenging and isolating year. FAS recognizes that many older adults have been hit especially hard by the COVID-19, especially those in care facilities. Even if they have family in the area, they may not be able to enjoy their company during the holiday season due to visitor restrictions or health concerns. The FAS team hopes that collecting Christmas cards for the residents is a way to provide a small connection and let them know people are thinking of them. “We are very passionate about community reinvestment at FAS, and our team supports the missions of numerous local non-profits, including the Brethren Retirement Community” said Matt Arnold, president of Financial Achievement Services. “We are very happy to be partnering with the BRC to help bring a little bit of Christmas joy to the residents who are facing loneliness due to the pandemic.” Christmas cards for the card drive may be handmade or store bought, and should be addressed generically (e.g., Dear BRC Resident). Creating handmade cards is a great craft activity for parents to do with kids; however, please do not use loose glitter or glitter on glue. Pre-mixed “glitter glue” is acceptable. Please do not enclose or attach candy to the cards. Cards can be turned in to the FAS office at 5116 Children’s Home Bradford Road, Greenville, OH 45331. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will also be a special mailbox at the entrance for after-hours drop-offs. Anyone wishing to participate should turn in their cards to the FAS office by Monday, Dec. 21. The cards will then be delivered to the Brethren Retirement Community and distributed to residents by the See CARD | 7B

Winter Wonderland at Chenoweth Trails Staff report

GREENVILLE— The Light Foundation is offering Darke County area residents a weekend of safe, socially distanced tours through a custom light display at its Chenoweth Trails facility in Greenville. The nonprofit, founded by former NFL Super Bowl champion Matt Light and his wife Susie, aims to take young people out of their everyday environments and provide them with unique opportunities that ignite their passion, purpose, and motivation to succeed. The Light Foundation’s Winter Wonderland at Chenoweth Trails fundraising

event will run three nights later this month: Friday, Dec. 18, from 6 to 10 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 19, from 6 to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. There is no RSVP needed and only a small donation is recommended to enter the dazzling holidaythemed display. “With the donation, guests will be able to enjoy a memorable outdoor walk through sparkling holiday lights, a life-size nativity scene, a take home craft, a chance to win prizes, and some grab-and go refreshments, including, hot cocoa and coffee!,” notes Program Director April

Brubaker. “Kids will also be able to bring a letter for Santa to drop in a special North Pole express mailbox handcrafted by some special elves.” She says that this event will also serve as a monthly Family Fun Day for all LIGHT Project participants who are able to attend. The Winter Wonderland is being presented in partnership with Lowe’s Home Improvement, who has donated more than 200 prelit trees to the Light Foundation. The hardware store recently announced plans to donate $1 million trees this holiday season in partnership with the NFL and

related charities to people affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. “We are most excited about the Christmas Tree display!” says Program Coordinator Brandi Spille. “For a sponsorship fee of as little as $50, local businesses and organizations will be able to decorate a tree that we provide them with for the weekend. It’s a great opportunity for them to spread the word about their business while doing something fun and impactful for their community.” The Light Foundation is giving away 6 foot artificial See TRAILS | 7B

The folded “book format” Christmas card did not appear until 1915, when Joyce Hall, a small printer in Kansas City, along with his brothers, William and Rollie, published a new card format of 4 inches wide by 6 inches high, and placed in an envelope. The cards were quite successful, and ten years later, the Hall brothers changed the company name to “Hallmark.” Over the years, Hallmark

With national Christmas Card Day occurring Dec. 9, some fun facts have emerged about this interesting, though somewhat dated tradition, by today’s electronic standards. The very first holiday card, printed in London, 1843, depicts a family at dinner, a father lifting his glass to toast, and images of helping the poor. The illustrator, J. R. Horsley sketched the illustration for his friend, and prominent arts patron, Sir Henry Cole, who needed to quickly and efficiently wish over 1,000 friends and admirers a “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.” The 5 1/8 inch by 3 ¼ inch stiff cardboard cards were mass printed in London, and allowed Mr. Cole to hand write each recipient’s name on the top of the card. Although it took several decades to catch on in the United States, it finally did, in 1875, when a New England Prussian immigrant named Louis Prang, created a card depicting a simple, well illustrated flower with the words, “Merry Christmas.” The

Christmas at the Open Arms Motel p.m. I was on a roll writing when Max opened the door and photographed me in my undershirt pecking away at the Underwood. Above me a bare bulb hung from the ceiling. Max sold that photo of a freelancer at work to “Writer’s Digest.” “You won’t believe all the people downstairs,” Max said. “A bus is stranded here overnight.” I put the typewriter in park and followed him to the lobby. I saw numerous male and female drifters wearing denim, an elderly couple, and a worn-out woman in her 30s with a small boy. The driver and affluent passengers had elected to sleep in a pricier chain motel. The owners of the Open Arms, a pregnant earth mother and her longhaired husband, addressed us all. They told us they had planned a communal

Christmas meal in their apartment. “It will be a pitch-in,” Earth Mother chirped. The invitation cheered us. I salivated, weary of microwaved sandwiches in cellophane. I smiled at the boy. He looked at the floor. Max and I trudged through the snow-deep streets to a grocery store to purchase canned goods and Boone’s Farms wine for the meal. We then went back to the restaurant gift shop and looked for something to give the kid. I’d already given my own son his presents at an early Christmas. Max and I returned to the Open Arms to clean up in the communal bathroom and to don clean shirts. We removed our Stetsons as we entered the apartment. We sniffed the aroma of apple and pumpkin pies cooling on window sills.

Many of you have seen the real estate reevaluation numbers through the mail the past couple of weeks. These are just valuation numbers and not your taxes. Real Estate taxes are still being calculated and will be out after the first of the year. Many of the increases have come down from the Ohio Department of Taxation and not locally. As properties are evaluated this year, most residential properties will see an increase while CAUV values will see a reduction. As we wrap up the year, we would like to thank Commissioner Mike

has done a great job in keeping all of us informed and up to date. Thank you to Dr. Terry Holman and the employees for a job well done during this time. November is budget month in the county and we have completed our meetings with the individual offices. Each office has done an exemplary job in holding their costs down. In spite of all the issues this year, Darke County is in good financial shape because of the work of all the county offices being fiscally responsible. We are fortunate that sales tax numbers have increase because of the online shopping being used by our residents and sales tax dollars are able to stay here in the county. In other updates, the airport taxi-way project is underway. As of now, the surveying is being done and if the weather co-operates

November was fairly decent to us weather wise, and allowed our farmers to get quite a bit of harvesting done. The crop reports overall were pretty good and hopefully this good luck will carry right into spring of next year. This year has been challenging, with a lot of uncertainty. Businesses forced to close, then allowed to reopen, then with restrictions, plus having employees off for the COVID-19 virus. Our government operations were no different. We too had to adhere to the same policies, and we understand the hardships this has imposed. Fortunately, Darke County seems to be weathering this fairly well. Our unemployment rate continues to fall, and businesses seem to be getting used to this “new normal.” The Darke County Health Department

has been the leader in this industry; in 1977, Hallmark created a simple card with three angels which sold 34 million copies. Today, Christmas and holiday cards are still as popular as ever in the U.S., with annual sales of 6.5 billion greeting cards each year, with 1.6 billion units of holiday cards, alone, totaling an estimated between $7 and $8 billion in annual retail sales. In downtown Greenville, sales have been swift this season as many people want to get their Christmas cards out early, with the uncertainty of COVID restrictions and increased postal traffic.
