AAA is closing Greenville office GREENVILLE – Do you need to plan a trip, get brochures on RYAN BERRY your chosen Managing Editor destination bluebagmedia.com or get more information about AAA membership? You won’t be able to pop into the local AAA office beginning next year. AAA has announced it will be closing its Greenville office at the end of this year. According to a statement sent to AAA members, the office is closing due to a decline in office track. Members are increasingly accessing benefits through the business’ website or by phone. Thomas C. Wiedemann, president and COO, said, “As a membership organization, we strive to strike a balance between being as close as possible to our members and being a careful

steward of member dues. After thorough consideration, we have made the very difficult decision to close the Greenville office at the end of the year.” The staff at the local AAA office has been offered positions in other offices. Lori Comer, Brenda Ray, Jann Peace and Cindi Stevens will join the Dayton North office, 6580 N. Main St., Dayton, and Linda Snyder will join the Troy office, 1041 S. Dorset Road, Troy. Local residents can also choose to use services at the Piqua office, 115 E. High St. Wiedemann added, “For those members who have travel booked through AAA Travel Agency, your travel agent will be contacting you to let you know at which office they will be working in 2015. The office change will in no way impact your vacation plans.

GREENVILLE – Students of the Greenville High S c h o o l CLINTON helped raise RANDALL $1,175 for Staff Writer bluebagmedia.com Greenville 8th grader Desiree Anders who is battling Lymphoma. Friends and members of Greenville Student Council presented the Anders family with the check on Dec. 5 during the school pep rally. “I am amazed at the children of this communi-

ty,” said Desiree’s mother Starla Cates. “Its awesome how they come together for someone they hardly know!” Desiree was diagnosed in July with T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. According to lymphoma. org, the complete remission rate can be very high in this type of lymphoma with intensive chemotherapy. Cates told The Early Bird that Desiree continues to go through chemotherapy and has good test results.

Celebration in Arcanum expanded ARCANUM – Santa and Mrs. Claus felt like they were home RYAN BERRY in the North Managing Editor Pole when bluebagmedia.com they arrived in Arcanum on Dec. 6. Chilly temperatures had more than 100 kids trying to stay warm while waiting to catch a glimpse of the jolly ol’ elf. The children were bundled up in coats, gloves, hats and scarves, but once the lights on the fire truck leading Santa and his beautiful wife into downtown Arcanum came into view, the cold seemed to vanish. The youngsters who were holding tight to their parent’s leg to stay warm dashed to the edge of the sidewalk and stretched their necks as far as they could reach trying to see the star of the parade. Joining the Arcanum Volunteer Fire Department and Santa in the parade was the Arcanum High School Marching Band. Riley Bevins, 10, was picked by Santa and Mrs.

Claus to join them in the parade. She was chosen after writing a letter to the couple earlier this year. In addition to sitting between the Claus couple during the parade, Bevins was given a couple of Christmas gifts a little early. Santa gave her a jewelry maker, Twister game and snowman purse. Arcanum Mayor Judy Foureman was pleased with how Arcanum businesses and citizens have stepped up this year to make this holiday season

bigger and better in the village. “We want to bring people to the village to see what is offered and for fellowship. It is a wonderful way to celebrate,” she said. In addition to the parade, Arcanum hosted an Arcanum Area Holiday Business Walk with 20 participating businesses and 20 vendors, concert with The Village Singers and the lighting of Winter Nights in Ivester Park. Winter Nights in Ivester will run Dec. 1314, 20-21 and 24-25 in

Ivester Park beginning at 6 p.m. Visitors can walk or drive thru the park on Saturdays with special activities planned, including a bonfire and s’mores. Sundays are drive thru only. Foureman gave a lot of credit to Julie Willis, council member, for making this event bigger. Willis is credited for organizing the lights in the park, all of which were donated. Foureman emphasized that no village money was used to purchase lights.

Sign goes up on new Rural King store GREENVILLE – Work is continuing on the new Rural King store in Greenville. The sign went up this week and preparations are being made in and outside the store. One of the most recent additions was a new loading dock. Officials with Rural King have not determined an opening date, but are hoping to have the store ready by March. Rural King began in 1960 in Matoon, Ill. and

has since added 70 stores in nine states, including 16 stores in Ohio. Stores nearby include Huber Heights, Van Wert, and Hamilton in Ohio and Muncie and New Castle in Indiana. Their locations have an outstanding product mix with items such as livestock feed, farm equipment, agricultural parts, lawn mowers, workwear, fashion clothing, housewares and toys.

Holiday closings GREENVILLE – Community Action Partnership-Darke County will be closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 in honor of

the holiday season. This includes Metropolitan Housing Authority and Community Transportation.

UNION CITY, Ind. – Carla Benge is looking forward to helping RYAN BERRY businessManaging Editor es in the bluebagmedia.com Union City area move forward. The former Lebanon, Ind. resident recently moved to the community and accepted a position with the Union City Chamber of Commerce as its new executive director and began working for the organization on Nov. 25. Benge explained her husband was originally from Union City and every time they would visit there was always something happening. From the inaugural Arts Festival this year to the annual light display in Harter Park, she believes the villages (Ohio and Indiana sides) are on the right track. Her hometown is bigger than Union City,

but it doesn’t have nearly as many events. She is hoping she can add to the success the businesses are experiencing. The new director has plenty of experience with small businesses, having owned three including a day care center. She has also managed restaurants and has a real estate license. One of her first priorities is to meet with area business owners. She is currently visiting two or three shops a day to introduce herself and show how the Chamber can help them. She wants to be able to use their new website to spotlight businesses that are having special sales or are new to the area. Benge also hopes to feature a different business each month on the website. She is also working on a project that was already in the works when she took the job. The

Chamber wants to bring new business to the community and believes popup stores could be successful. If someone has a business, but not sure how well it will be received and are leery about investing a lot of money into something that might not work, the Union City Chamber of Commerce has a plan. They are working with local building owners to put businesses in vacant buildings on a

three month “trial” period. The business owner would be responsible for preparing the inside of the building, but the Chamber would take care of the rent and utilities for the three month period. If the business owner wants to continue they would take over the rent and utilities. If it doesn’t work out, the owner would only be out the money they put into the building. In addition to the popup stores, Benge is working on some of her own ideas to bring visitors to local businesses. She hopes to unveil one or two of them next year. GREENVILLE POLICE BEAT

Crime scene established on possible armed assault On December 5 police were dispatched to Wayne Hospital regarding an assault victim, Bobby Turner. Turner had visible injuries on his face and was difficult to understand due to the injuries. The report indicates Turner

was at Andrew Jennings’ residence, 308 Washington Ave., in the garage watching a movie, when there was a knock on the door. Two assailants rushed in. One immediately went to Turner, grabbed him by the hair, and struck

him in the face with what the victim thought was a pistol. Turner blacked out. The victim said Jennings was present but was held at gunpoint by the second assailant. Jennings told police a similar story, adding he couldn’t tell if a weapon was used to hit Turner and adding one of the assailants had attempted several times over the previous 24 hours to get Turner to leave the residence with him. Turner had refused each time. Jennings also told police he was kept from interfering by the second assailant who lifted his shirt showing the butt of a gun, stating “don’t make me use this.” Jennings contacted Turner’s girlfriend to take him to the hospital. The crime scene was secured and taped off at which time a crime scene log was started. MENACING On December 7 police were dispatched to 305 Miami Circle, Apt. 3, regarding a fight. The victim, Cheyenne Werner, advised police she and the defendant, Gage Bradburn, were discussing him leaving the residence due to a conflict. She had contacted Bradburn’s mother to pick him up; she refused, so he said he wasn’t leaving. He began using profanity and told her she was lucky she was pregnant or he would “beat the **** out of her,” then allegedly grabbed her hoodie, threw her around multiple times and hit her in the back. She said she felt threatened and wanted him charged. There were no visible marks on her. During this time Bradburn came outside and was told to stand by the

police cruiser. The officer asked him to take his hands out of his pockets but he refused. He was placed in handcuffs and told he was not under arrest. At first Bradburn said nothing happened, but when he found out he was being charged he told the officer she attacked him. He displayed three small scratches on the side of his neck, however they appeared to be old. He was taken to his residence and issued a summons for menacing. OVERDOSE On December 5 police responded to 209 Tillman Ave. to assist Greenville Township Rescue with a possible overdose. The officer observed Kimberly Frantz laying on the ground in a hallway of the residence. Rescue moved Frantz to the back of the ambulance after which she told police and rescue members she had used heroin and cocaine the previous night. While at the hospital Frantz told the officer she was walking home from a market when several individuals approached her. She knew two of them. She said they wanted to fight her because “she is known as being a snitch.” Frantz said the group offered her a “speedball” (some kind of drug) and one of them helped her inject it into her arm. She added she agreed because she was afraid they would hurt her if she didn’t. Frantz said she didn’t remember much about the incident except she also believes one of them stole $84 from her. Frantz’ mother stated she’d picked her daughter up from the Townhouse Motel and she was crying and appeared to be under the influence of something. As the morning went on she appeared to be fine, then suddenly began gasping for air and shaking. According to

the report, Frantz could be charged pending the results of her medical records. DUI On December 6 police were dispatched to 335 12th St. regarding a crash without injuries. The victim, Matthew Caupp, told police a man in a truck struck his vehicle then left the scene. There was heavy damage to Caupp’s truck on the driver’s side. He identified a truck at 316 12th St. as the one that struck his vehicle. The officer observed heavy front driver side damage to the other vehicle and saw an open beer can on the floorboard driver’s side. The officer contacted David Bryant, owner, who admitted striking the Caupp vehicle but said it was because his brakes went out. Bryant was asked to exit his residence. There was an odor of alcoholic beverage on him, he staggered as he walked and had slurred speech. He stated he’d had about four beers before driving his vehicle. Bryant did poorly on the field sobriety test, was arrested for OVI and transported to the police department. His breath test measured .14. He was placed under Administrative License Suspension and issued citations for OVI and Left of Center. He was released to his wife. ANIMAL PROBLEM On December 5 police responded to the 400 block of 12th Street regarding a brown and white pit bull running loose. The complainant, Ashley Martin, said she called because she went to get her kids into her vehicle when the dog ran at her. She was afraid it might attack her and the kids. The officer waited while she got her kids into her vehicle. Ashley told the officer who the owner might be as his dog keeps getting loose. The referenced owner, Tracey Harris, 318 Anderson, had a

Dog at Large citation in October. The officer located the dog in the 300 block of Riffle. It ran at the cruiser and barked but it was also wagging its tail. The dog followed him to the Anderson address but kept running away. Stacie Todero helped the officer eventually catch the dog. Todero said she has a child-proof cover on her door handle but her 2-year-old pulled it off and opened the door. The dog ran out at that time. Todero added the dog is a ‘runner’ and she’d also been cited, as well as Harris, her boyfriend. She was issued a misdemeanor citation for Dog at Large. WARRANTS On December 5 Leo Jones turned himself in at Greenville Police Station regarding a warrant for not complying with three days of jail time on the original charge of OVI. He was placed under arrest and transported to Mercer County jail. On December 8 police made contact with Shane Sargent on an unrelated complaint. Sargent told the officer he had a warrant through Miami County. The officer confirmed the active warrant on a probation violation for Disorderly Conduct and placed Sargent under arrest. He was transported to Darke County jail. EARLY BIRD POLICY The Greenville Police Beat is prepared from public records available at the Greenville Police Department. Every effort is made to balance the public’s right to know with the rights of the individuals involved. Readers are encouraged to contact Greenville Police if they have information or concerns regarding these or any other incidents they see. The Early Bird notes all suspects are innocent until proven guilty and welcomes comments and concerns regarding this community service.

Stewart gets 3 years for assaulting man with vehicle BY CLINTON RANDALL STAFF WRITER www.bluebagmedia.com

Visitors to Garst Museum during its Open House enjoyed – among numerous displays throughout the building – the array of early machines and appliances in the Pioneer Room. (Bob Robinson photo)

Garst Open House provided education and memories BY BOB ROBINSON ASSOC. EDITOR www.bluebagmedia.com GREENVILLE – “There’s something here you might be interested in,” said Mick Maher, docent for Garst Museum. He was one of several scattered throughout Garst Museum during its Christmas open house. His assignment was the Military Room. He pointed out a WWII display. It was the story of the bombing of Pearl Harbor… and the Darke County native who was the first person to advise Washington of the attack. “Karl Boyer was just a kid, early 20s,” said Maher. “He sent the message. Washington said ‘repeat message’. He sent it again… Washington said ‘repeat message’. He had to send it a third time.” Maher, a Marine veteran whose uniform is on display in the Military Room, said he and Boyer used to sit at the Maid Rite and talk about it all the time. This year the museum’s open house was on Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7. Maher said the 73rd anniversary of the bombing tied in with the history in his section. “Did you know the first bombings were at Kaneohe Bay, not Pearl Harbor? The Japanese thought that was their target until one of their people corrected them.” Kaneohe Bay, a Naval and Marine air field, was saved. Garst Museum Director Clay Johnson was pleased with the constant stream of people in all sections of the museum. “We’re probably looking at 200 visitors here today,” he said. Overflow parking across the road was being used for the first time since The Gathering in July. “This event is all volunteer,” he

said with appreciation. “Those goodies (nodding to the table full of treats at the business office entrance) all done by volunteers… all their best efforts.” Some people were first time visitors, others the first time since childhood; still others were no strangers to the various exhibits in the museum. One lady hadn’t been there in years and noted the new exhibits for Annie Oakley, Crossroads of Destiny and Lowell Thomas. An older gentleman was resting in one of the chairs set up in the business area; “I’m babysitting the coats,” he said, patting a stack on the chair next to him. “Hey! Did you see that motorcycle in there?” The youngster was impressed with the police motorcycle in the Pioneer Room. “I bet you want to ride it, don’t you?” The child shook his head… “Nah, I want my dad to ride it.” Amandine Vandromme, a foreign exchange student from Belgium and senior at Greenville High School, was seeing the museum for the first time. “I really like it,” she said. lage Room the best. She wasn’t overly fond of the dental practices at the time, however. Mom noted the “handdriven” drill they used; Laura wrinkled her nose. “Uh uh,” she said at the thought of being the person in the chair. She liked Annie Oakley as well. “Annie’s really cool the way she can shoot,” Laura said. Two youngsters were measuring themselves against Annie Oakley’s five foot height. Eighth grader Dennis Forte towered over the famous sharpshooter while his younger sister, Nevada Forte (who starts kindergarten in the fall), barely made it up to the cluster of medals on Annie’s outfit. For many the trip through the museum was one of memories. Darrell Biddlestone was looking at the Dotties Old Tyme Players display and noticed a photo that looked a little familiar. “That was me,” he said, pointing to a young man toward the back of the photo. “I was driving a 1915 Model T for Dottie the year she was Grand Marshall.” Rodney Subler, Greenville, was renewing his memories as a Corning employee. Photos, lamp samples and a machine used to build the lamps were on display in the Pioneer Room. “I was one of the last ones hired in 1957,” he said. Subler wasn’t sure exactly how the machine on display was used since it wasn’t his area, but he knew its products.

Annual DCTA Christmas Banquet touts success of local townships BY BOB ROBINSON ASSOC. EDITOR www.bluebagmedia.com

GREENVILLE – More than 200 Darke County township trustees and their families, guests, and local and state officials celebrated the season Dec. 9 at the Darke County Township Association (DCTA) Annual Christmas Banquet at Romers Catering. DCTA President Ed Huff, Jr., conducted the meeting, recognizing public officials and representatives from townships associations across the state, as well as Ohio Township Association (OTA) officers. OTA President Tom Willsey told the group the Ohio Legislature had recently passed a $10 million bill to help

townships with some of their financial needs. “This is one-time only,” he said. “It will be broken out in two ways… $5 million will be spread equally among the 1,311 townships and $5 million will be provided based upon the mileage in each township.” He noted that works out to a little over $100 a mile. Willsey also told the group about the MORE grants available through OTA. “It’s only $500 but it’s almost available just for the asking,” he said, noting the application form is only one page. He said applications for 2014 close Dec. 31, but then applications can begin for 2015. Following dinner provided by Romer’s staff, attendees were

I grinned and went over to them. “You have a lot of reading to do this weekend,â€? she said. “I posted my ďŹ nal exam‌ FIVE PAGES!â€? “I’ll look forward to reading it,â€? I said somewhat ruefully, but still grinning. I tell my students: no word requirement. No BS either. I want clear, concise and complete. There are only three questions on their ďŹ nal, however they all have multiple parts. Most students’ eyes glaze over when they see it; a few, however, grin and tell me I’ll have a lot of reading to do. Five pages – as it turned out – was not the record. The new record is now seven pages. “It was a great class,â€? she said. “My favorite; I learned a lot! Thank you, Mr. Robinson.â€? Throughout the evening – and all weekend – I kept running into students from pretty much all campuses. Some were riding the carriages Friday night; most of them looking for Santa Friday and Saturday. Two were in my ďŹ rst grade class from Friday. This was a class I’d already had this year, and has been scheduled for a few more times down the road. The ďŹ rst time was tough; I’d forgotten some of the “littleâ€? things I used to do to maintain control. This one went much better‌ There was, of course, the little girl who spent the ďŹ rst half hour crying. As always, the ďŹ rst few minutes of the day are spent dealing with a dozen or more children with very speciďŹ c – ‘crisis’ level – issues. Then‌ “Mr. Robinson, (Name) is crying.â€? He was right. Surrounding her were four students putting their arms around her or patting her on the shoulder. Tears were running like water over Niagara Falls. “What’s the matter, Sweety?â€? I asked after I got the other kids back to their duties of the morning. “I want my mommy!â€? she cried. This was December, not the ďŹ rst day of school; ďŹ rst grade not

kindergarten. It had to be more than that. Turned out it was me‌ well‌ it was missing her regular teacher. After several attempts to get her back on track (they didn’t work), I ďŹ nally asked her if she would like to sit in her teacher’s chair to do her work. “Uh huh.â€? she said, snifing. She had a great rest of the day‌ and a successful “manipulation of the sub.â€? Some day she might even become president. There were two students who insisted on sitting with me at lunch. We found ourselves sitting across from ďŹ rst graders from a different classroom. After talking to my students (and getting them to eat) I glanced up to see a student staring at me instead of eating. Like most kids at Woodland, she looked familiar; she had a half smile on her face. I pointed to her food. She shook her head, still smiling. I pointed again. She stared (and smiled) a little longer, then slowly started eating. Later I glanced up to see she’d ďŹ nished one thing and was staring at me again. Still with that half smile. I pointed to the last thing on her tray. She shook her head again. I grinned and pointed again. She gave me a big grin, then slowly started eating. Again. She never said a single word. A few minutes later the table was released and she was gone. I’m not even trying to ďŹ gure that one out‌ I think I’ll just chalk it up to another very interesting day with some very fascinating young people.

No poverty for workers and kids Ohioans – many of w h o m work multiple jobs while takSHERROD ing care BROWN of their U.S. SENATOR children – deserve tax relief. And workers who lose their jobs or their pensions due to no fault of their own deserve help with health bills. While this makes sense to most Ohioans, too many Members of Congress may disagree. While some legislators don’t hesitate to give tax breaks to large corporations, they stop short of also providing workers with fair tax credits that will keep them out of poverty. As Congress works to ďŹ nalize a tax deal, if busi-

nesses receive tax relief, the same has to go for Ohio workers and their families. Tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC) – which provide tax relief for low-income workers – are critical lifelines for many taxpayers and lift millions out of poverty every year. Just as corporations need certainty so they can make investments, working Americans deserve certainty so they can make ends meet. Temporary improvements to the EITC and CTC will expire in just a few years if Congress does not act. According to an analysis by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, if these provisions are allowed to expire in 2017, 13 million families would lose part

or all of their EITC and CTC. This would result in 14.6 million Americans being pushed deeper into poverty and 1.8 million Americans being pushed into poverty. In Ohio alone, allowing the improvements to expire would reduce the EITC and CTC of nearly half a million families. We should not only make permanent the enhancements made to the EITC and the CTC, we should look at ways to expand and improve both credits. That’s why I introduced legislation that would triple the size of the EITC for the only class of workers who can be taxed into poverty: low-income adults without children. This would reduce poverty and spread the beneďŹ ts of the program to a wider pool.

Ohioans want to work and support themselves and we must continue to ďŹ ght for tax policy that does not put an undue burden on low-wage earners. In 2012, more than 1.5 million Ohioans received more than $3.2 billion in tax relief through the EITC and the CTC. That’s money that gets fed right back into the economy. Families use their refunds to pay for necessities – like groceries, school supplies, and visits to the dentist – that they otherwise might not be able to afford. We cannot afford to neglect working families when it comes to tax relief. Congress must ensure that, like corporations, workers who need help the most can rely on fair tax credits for years to come.

could never possibly remember. I laugh and cuss when I recall my ďŹ rst college experience with computer operation over 45 years ago. The gigantic IBM System 360 covered probably one half acre, ten feet high, of environmentally-controlled space. Back in the technological “dark ages,â€? we wrote mathematical programs on a series of “IBM cards,â€? only one command per card. You had to create each card on a keypunch machine, and arranged them in a preordained sequence with identiďŹ cation cards unique to the department or course you were taking. This was your password. Once you felt your program was written correctly, and every card was placed in the proper sequence, you delivered the stack to the computer center where technicians would enter the programs into the massive computer. If correctly written and arranged, and with no language or mathematical errors, your program would produce an “output.â€? If not you would receive an “error message.â€? You could expect that

your program’s output (or error message) would be available for pickup in 12 to 24 hours. All that time you were hoping and praying that everything was correct in your submission. If not, you would be given back your cards with a couple of sheets of bad news—your program did not run and you would probably miss the class deadline. At that time, nobody could conceive of computers in their modern state. To use the system you ďŹ rst had to be relatively uent in a speciďŹ c computer language. I was taught “Fortranâ€? which was (is) a scientiďŹ c language used primarily for mathematical calculations. There were other languages used in business and other applications which I knew nothing about. Bill Gates changed all that years later with the use of little pictures he called “icons.â€? Since then, my respect for computers has never been the same. About two years after I began using the computer, a breakthrough in technology occurred as the university placed keyboard terminals at various locations on campus. From a terminal you could login to the main computer, compose and run a program, and receive your output. No punch cards or delivery and pickup of your program! No nail-biting hours, waiting to see if your program had even run! You now knew that before you left the terminal. This is where I was ďŹ rst introduced to the concept of a password. These were speciďŹ c to your class and the same

word was issued to each student to gain access to the computer via a remote terminal. The purpose was not for security, but to keep non-authorized students from using the system. You kept the password in your wallet or textbook, since the concept of memorization had not yet evolved. Back then, I could never have conceived that one day I would carry a computer that would be many thousands (millions?) of times as powerful as that half-acre giant, and it would resemble a plastic pop-tart. But I also would never have believed that my greatest objection to it would be the password. I try very hard to minimize password use. No matter the program or application, if a password is optional, I will not set it up. I have nothing to hide or hoard, because I still ďŹ rmly resist using the machine for ďŹ nancial transactions. The password that I ďŹ rst started using (when I absolutely had to) was a unique compound word that I borrowed from the “Beavis and Buttheadâ€? series. It worked very well, was relatively unique, and was something that I could easily remember; until the latest tyranny of the password czars. Try as I may, I still cannot become accustomed to creating a password that includes an upper-case letter, a number, a haiku, a gang sign, a hieroglyph, and the blood of a virgin. Yes, I know the internet is a dangerous place and there are bad people out there who want my stuff. There have always been thieves. The differ-

ence as it appears to me is that, only recently, we have been content to store all our stuff at a location that is accessible to everyone. I would like to choose my own password and if I get hacked, let it be my own fault—but not because you made me have to write the damn password down just to reproduce it. I’m probably wrong, being a dinosaur, but it seems that if passwords must be so complex that everybody has to write them down; that should be a much bigger security aw than picking your own simpler word. People “in the knowâ€? tell me that they use password “appsâ€? to create highly complex, unbreakable, passwords. Whenever I hear this, I recall the undecipherable Enigma machine used by Hitler in WWII. Others tell me they keep all their passwords on a spreadsheet in their home or ofďŹ ce computer. Pardon my ignorance, but this would seem to create a single point of risk, or a situation where ďŹ nding one password would get you all of them.

I “pass on passwords A r e a lot of people totally frustrated with the necessity and opJIM SURBER eration of DARKE COUNTY ENGINEER electronic device passwords? Could it just be me, or more likely a function of my age? I hate passwords. I used to dislike them, but it has gone well beyond that stage now. It is a passionate hatred. Today, you need a username and unique password to operate virtually every gizmo that is closely related to what used to be known as a computer. If that is not enough, you are under constantly increasing pressure to create ever-more complex passwords that you

last six days of the drive in order to more effectively help the needy in Darke County. Six area organizations are helped from donations. They are FISH Choice Food Pantry, the Grace Resurrection Center, Community Unity and the local food banks in Ansonia, Arcanum and Castine. The Ansonia Community Food Pantry has helped 217 families (approximately 500 individuals) through November. Many school groups, organizations and the Christian Church have helped the United Methodist Church and the Church of God in Ansonia in this partnership that depends on Christmas Drive funds. Faith Food Pantry at Faith United Methodist Church, Arcanum, has 10 volunteers that have assisted around 1000 people this year. They have received food contributions throughout the year from the Arcanum HS National Honor Society food drive, Boy Scouts, Postal employees, Family Health in Greenville and individual church members. The Castine Area Food Bank received 188 calls as of Sept. 30) with 72 repeats, which is a 38.3 percent increase in repeat usage. In the past 12 months, FISH has served 3,624 families through their pantry and by delivery. Those families include 11,121 individuals with

571 that are over age 65 and 283 new families being helped with food. The Grace Resurrection Community Center appreciates being a recipient of some of the Christmas Drive funds that have allowed them to help 4,570 households and 15,645 individuals through grocery distributions so far in 2014 (up from 4,360 household and 14,350 individuals in the same time period in 2013). This ministry will provide food twice a month to all Darke County residents who qualify through their Monday and Thursday grocery distribution. Community Unity provides Darke Countians with financial assistance towards utilities, rent, medical needs and emergency transportation at their office located at 433 E. Water Street in the Grace Resurrection Community Center. At their November annual meeting, it was reported that approximately $21,700 had gone out to help 374 clients representing total households with 897 members. For more information about the Darke County Community Christmas Drive, Reverend Joseph Soley may be contacted at 547-0533. Donations may be dropped off to Treasurer Mike Boyer at the main branch of the Greenville National Bank or mailed to P.O. Box 15, Greenville, Ohio 45331.

GREENVILLE – Christmas is the time of year for joy and happiness, but for those who are lonely or less fortunate it can be a very sad time of year. This is the reason that for the past 33 years the Lighthouse Christian Center along with area business and community volunteers treat those persons to a free Christmas Dinner. The dinner is free and consists of ham, chicken, barbeque pork, dressing, green beans, corn, escalloped potatoes, cole slaw, bread, butter, milk, coffee and Wicks pies for dessert. In addition to the meal, they have a treat of candy, fruit, and gum...especially for the children. They also have numerous door prizes for the adults and gifts for the children. The past few years they have had bicycles as door prizes for the children.

Even in the bad economy, businesses and the more fortunate have been very generous this year, and they expect to have lots of food and gifts. They also expect to have lots more door prizes this year to make Christmas more enjoyable for more people. Reservations for the dinner are requested (just so they know how much food to prepare), but you can come without them. Leave a message with the age of your children so they can have the appropriate age gift. If you know of a shutin that needs a meal, call 548-7464 and put their name on the list; please leave a message if no one answers, someone will get back to you. The meal starts at 11:30 a.m. on Christmas Day. Come and have fun and lots of fellowship.

Stucke scholarship fund will help local Seminarians MARIA STEIN – Last year, 13 scholarships were awarded to men in the community who are studying to be Catholic priests. The North Deaneries Seminarian Fund supported every seminarian from the Sidney and St. Mary’s deaneries of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. “I give thanks to God for all the benefactors who are willing to support us in our discernment of the priesthood,” said scholarship recipient David Doseck of Immaculate Conception parish, Botkins. “It is by your prayers and generous hearts that men like myself have the ability to respond to God’s call with eagerness and joy,” said David. Seminarian Corey Knapke of St. Henry parish added, “I have been told that discernment is a community affair, so it is nice when affirmations

and support are put forth by the community which has brought me up from youth.” The scholarship fund was established in 2013 at the Darke County Foundation (formerly the HOPE Foundation) by Melvin and Mary Ann Stucke of Versailles, and the fund grew with additional donations from the community. The Stuckes are once again matching any donation up to $250, as they did last year. 100% of donations will go directly into the Seminarian Fund. “We invite the community to join us in this effort to reinforce young men in their priestly studies,” said Melvin. “We feel that through the encouragement and prayer of so many supporters, the number of Catholic priests will continue to increase.” The North Deaneries Seminarian Fund will

More than 65,000 deer checked COLUMBUS – Hunters checked 65,485 whitetailed deer during Ohio’s 2014 gun hunting season, Dec. 1-7, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Rifles using specific straight-walled cartridges were allowed during Ohio’s deer-gun season. Gun hunters took advantage of the new opportunity and checked 5,360 deer with straight-walled cartridge rifles. Hunters have checked 148,830 deer so far in all 2014 hunting seasons, compared to 162,720 at the same point last year. Hunters harvested 75,408 deer during the 2013 deer-gun season. Until recently, the populations in nearly all of Ohio’s counties were above their target numbers. In the last few years, through increased harvests, dramatic strides have been made in many counties to bring those populations closer toward their goal, and the effectiveness of these herd management efforts are reflected in the number of deer checked this season. Once a county’s deer population is near goal, harvest regulations are adjusted to maintain the population. Counties reporting the highest number of checked deer during the 2014 gun season: Coshocton (2,308), Muskingum

(2,084), Tuscarawas (2,074), Guernsey (1,788), Ashtabula (1,730), Knox (1,727), Licking (1,655), Harrison (1,491), Carroll (1,477) and Belmont (1,428). Darke County had 241 compared to 170 a year ago. Hunting is the best and most effective management tool for maintaining Ohio’s healthy deer population. During the 2013-2014 hunting season, Ohio hunters checked 191,459 deer. Ohio ranks fifth nationally in resident hunters and 11th in the number of jobs associated with huntingrelated industries. Hunting has a more than $853 million economic impact in Ohio through the sale of equipment, fuel, food, lodging and more. Find more information about deer hunting in the Ohio 2014-2015 Hunting and Trapping Regulations or at wildohio.gov. An updated deer harvest report is posted online each Wednesday. Archery season remains open through Feb. 1, 2015. The muzzleloader season is Jan. 2-5, 2015. Ohio’s first modern day deer-gun season opened in 1943 in three counties, and hunters harvested 168 deer. Deer hunting was allowed in all 88 counties in 1956, and hunters harvested 3,911 deer during that oneweek season.

GREENVILLE – As the Greenville Green Wave varsity boys recorded their first win of the 2014-15 basketball season Friday, Dec. 5, it was also the first win on the new SNB Court. Second National Bank (SNB) recently donated $25,000 to the Greenville Athletic Department in support of student athletes in the Greenville City School District. Along with the donation, the basketball court will be now called SNB Court at Greenville High School and displays the SNB official logo at both ends of the floor. SNB staff, including President and CEO John Swallow, and bank board members were onhand at Friday’s season opener. Prior to the start of the varsity game, an official SNB Court dedication was held at half court along with Greenville Superintendent Doug Fries. “The dedication of SNB Court at Greenville High School was a very proud moment for Second National Bank and our associates,” said John Swallow. “We appreciate the opportunity

Great gift ideas at Paragon Health 2015 March for Babies date is May 2 GREENVILLE – On May 2, at the Darke County Fairgrounds, hundreds of families and local business leaders will join together in the March of Dimes annual March for Babies—the nation’s oldest walk which raises critical funds for research and programs that prevent premature birth, birth defects, and infant mortality. This year’s annual Darke County March for Babies is a week later than previous years in order to separate it from other marches in the region. The chairperson for this year’s event is Bill LaFramboise, executive vice president of Greenville Technology, Inc. This will be Bill’s third time to chair the event having led successful campaigns in 2012 and 2013. “As a business leader, this campaign gives me and Greenville Technology a unique opportunity to help the community. As a grandfather and a father and passionate supporter of the Darke County community, I can’t think of a more important cause than our babies,” said LaFramboise, who will be asking other local businesses for their support in the coming months. “One in eight of our babies in Ohio are born premature, and that’s just not acceptable. It takes leaders in our community working together to ensure more moms have healthy pregnancies.” Greenville Technology, Inc. is a Presenting Sponsor for the event. The March for Babies is a fun filled Saturday morning that offers activities for the whole family,

a “Kids Zone”, continuous entertainment, and plenty of food. The walk itself is a five mile route throughout downtown Greenville that both starts and ends at the Darke County Fairgrounds. The event also offers a much shorter family fun walk. People of all ages are welcome and the facility is stroller and wheelchair friendly. The 2015 Darke County March for Babies is looking for participants for the event. These can be corporate or family teams that help raise money or even individuals that want to support this cause. Volunteer opportunities are also available through our logistics committee, which only meets for an hour a month to plan and organize the day’s activities. Anyone interested in forming a team or volunteering can do so by contacting Brian Hammond, Community Director of the March of Dimes, Miami Valley Division at 329-9274 or by e-mail at bhammond@ marchofdimes.org. For more than 75 years, moms and babies have benefited from March of Dimes research, education, vaccines, and breakthroughs. Find out how you can help raise funds to prevent premature birth and birth defects by walking in March for Babies at marchforbabies.org. Find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. The 2015 March for Babies is sponsored nationally by the March of Dimes number one corporate supporter Kmart, Macy’s, Famous Footwear, Cigna, Sanofi Pasteur, Mission Pharmacal, and United Airlines.

GETTYSBURG—When Beth Aukerman of Paragon Health wanted a unique gift to offer her customers for the holidays, she found the perfect item handcrafted by an artisan from southwest Ohio. That item is hand carved mountain man birdhouses. “Each one is individually hand carved so each one is different and has its own unique personality,” says Beth. “All are whimsical, some are smoking pipes, some have beards looking like pine trees, all have a merry twinkle in their eyes.” Made from cedar and pine, the houses are birdfriendly and also people friendly with built-in cleanout doors. The birdhouses are not just for the outdoors, says Beth, as

their unique handcrafted details make them perfect on a mantle or as an accent piece indoors. With 30 years’ experience, Beth believes “your health is your wealth,” stocking Paragon Health with essential oils and herbs year-around. “These make great Christmas basket goodies along with salt lamps, self-massage sticks, quality ear candles and gift certificates,” suggests Beth.

Paragon Health is located only five mile east of Greenville at 8736 Gettysburg Southeastern Road. At the caution light on U.S. 36 at Gettysburg, turn south and follow Gettysburg Southeastern Road to Paragon Health. “Paragon Health is a great mini-trip destination combined with Bears Mill and The Flour Barrel, both just down the road.” Hours at Paragon Health are Monday, Tues-

day and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon. The store is closed on Thursdays and Sundays.

GREENVILLE – Heartland of Greenville is pleased to announce that they received outstanding state survey results, with no deficiencies, for the third consecutive year. The survey is conducted annually at all nursing centers by the Ohio Department of Health, as a way to measure the quality of care delivered in all skilled nursing centers. “I applaud the positive attitude and commitment to caring which ensures our patients live with the greatest dignity, comfort and enjoyment possible,” Kara Jones, Administrator at Heartland of Greenville said. “Our scores reflect the commitment to excellence that we strive to reach every day. I’m very proud of our team.” Because of the intensity of the survey process, a center must truly excel to receive a deficiency free survey outcome. “Our success is reflective of the commitment to excellence and caring on the part of every employee,” said Kara Jones. “Our survey results reaffirm that our patient’s best way home is through our doors. On average, 89% of rehabilitation patients admitted to HCR ManorCare centers return home. We are proud of our accomplishments

and of our contribution to the Darke County community. Heartland consistently shines in this intensive survey process. Our company focuses on being committed to service and care every day and Heartland certainly lives this philosophy.” Reinforcing recent accolades, 14-year referral professional and Montgomery County resident, Kitty Wilson, said “when assisting my mother with making a provider choice, we had no reservations about choosing Heartland of Greenville. Though quite a distance

from our home in Vandalia, we knew that quality care and trusting staff would be worth the frequent drives to visit. As a healthcare professional, our priorities were clear. We needed stability and staff longevity, strong therapy for her recovery, attentive and caring staff, cleanliness, and above all else, trust that she would receive the 5-star care she deserved. Heartland of Greenville not only delivered, but exceeded each of our expectations. I would recommend Heartland of Greenville to anyone.”

Burns retiring; Open house planned GREENVILLE – In November 1974, The Citizen’s Bank of Ansonia hired a young man to work for their bank. In April 1976, Greenville National Bank purchased the Citizen’s Bank of Ansonia and acquired with it a future president and CEO of Greenville National Bank. This young man was Steve A. Burns. Burns was elected as president and CEO of GNB in March 1992. Under his leadership,

Team places 7th in soil contest

PITSBURG – The District 5 Soils Contest was recently held in Montgomery County. The soil contest consists of a written test, a Soil Survey test, and three pits to evaluate. The team, consisting of up to eight students, graded the soil pit based upon the guidelines provided on the scoring card. The team was given approximately twenty minutes at each of the three pits to determine various soil characteristics. Then based on what characteristics were found, rural and urban management practice recommendations were made. The Franklin Monroe FFA rural team placed seventh out of 28 teams. High scorers were Wyatt King, Nolan Archer and Sawyer Miller. The remaining team members were Logan Ressler, Erica Haxton, Chloe CastoClemons, Lance Hundley, and Cade McGlinch.

GNB has experienced an excellent and profitable growth period. “I did not accomplish any of this, but we did. I sincerely appreciate all that our directors, officers and employees have done to make Greenville National Bank the great organization it is,” stated

Burns. “We do what we do because we genuinely care about the customers we serve.” After 40 years of service and 23 years as President and CEO of Greenville National Bank, Steve Burns is retiring from those roles. With gratitude for his service and excellent leadership, Greenville National Bank invites the community to stop by for an Open House in Steve’s honor on Dec. 18, at GNB’s main office, 446 S. Broadway, during regular business hours 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Seek to Balance “Risk Tolerance” and “Required Risk”

Like everyone else, you have financial goals. To help achieve these goals, you may need to invest — and when you invest, you’ll need to take on some risk. But the more you understand this risk, and the better you are at managing it, the greater your potential for staying invested for the long term. To begin with, then, take a look at these terms: • Risk tolerance — Your risk tolerance is essentially your comfort level with taking risk. For example, if you have a high tolerance for risk, you may be comfortable investing aggressively. Conversely, if you tend to be risk-averse, you might lean more toward more conservative investment vehicles that offer greater protection of principal. • Required risk — While the term “required risk” may sound odd, it is actually an integral component of your ability to invest successfully. Basically, your required risk is the level of risk necessary to help you achieve your investment goals. The higher the return necessary to reach those goals, the more potential risk you’ll need to assume. As you invest, you’ll need to balance these two aspects of risk. For example, what might happen if you have a low risk tolerance, leading you toward “safer,” low-growth investments, but your goal is to retire early? For most people, this goal requires them to invest in vehicles that offer significant growth potential, such as stocks. And, as you know, investing in stocks entails risk — specifically, the risk that your stocks will lose value. So in this situation, your risk tolerance — the fact that you are risk-averse — is going to collide with

your required risk level, the amount of risk you are going to need to take (by investing in stocks) to achieve your goal of early retirement. When such a collision occurs, you have two choices. First, you could “stretch” your risk tolerance and accept the need to take on riskier investments in exchange for the growth potential you will require. Your other choice is to stay within your risk tolerance and adjust your ultimate goal — which, in this example, may mean accepting a later retirement date. Obviously, this is a personal decision. However, you may have more flexibility than you might have imagined. For instance, you might feel that you should be risk-averse because you have seen so many fluctuations in the financial markets. But if you have many decades to go until you retire, you actually do have time to recover from short-term losses, which means you may be able to reasonably handle more volatility. On the other hand, once you’re retired, you won’t have as many years to bounce back from market downturns, so you’ll have less “risk capacity” than you did when you were younger. In any case, by balancing your risk tolerance and your required risk level — and by understanding your risk capacity — you can be better prepared to take the emotion out of investing. When investors let their emotions get the better of them, they can make mistakes such as chasing “hot” stocks or selling quality investments due to temporary price drops. By having a clear sense of what risk really entails, however, you may be able to avoid costly detours — and stick with your long-term investment strategy.

Over 500 turnout for The Quest Christmas show

First Friday turnout high despite weather GREENVILLE – It was cold. It was drizzly. A slight BOB breeze would ROBINSON pop up makAssociate Editor bluebagmedia.com ing it feel even colder. However, that didn’t stop visitors from turning out for Main Street Greenville’s December First Friday. Vendors were doing a brisk Christmas business at St. Clair Manor. Parents and grandparents were treating their charges to rides on two different horse drawn carriages; and one of Santa’s Elves and Santa himself were gathering the Christmas wishes of area children for Santa’s annual midnight ride. “You know, I’ve been doing this for 62 years,” said Santa Claus at the A&B Coffee & Cake Shop. “And the theme – at least for the last 50 years – seems to be the same… girls want Barbie Dolls. They still do. I’ve had four or five requests tonight.” Boys were a different story. “Boys used to want trains. Now they want puppies.” Santa paused for a second, then “Well… boys and girls – the girls want puppies, too.” Two sisters with baby brother walked in with mom and dad. The bigger sister was eyeing Santa with anticipation, the younger one with trepidation and the baby didn’t care. Big sister got on Santa’s lap first and gave him her list. When she got off, little sister took a step then started crying. “She’s just being silly,” said big sister about her younger sibling. “Some-

times she’s silly.” Baby brother didn’t care when it was his turn. At least for the moment, then he wanted mom back. Dad whispered, referring to his oldest daughter, “She cried last year,” he said. “This is the first year she hasn’t.” If big sister heard him, she didn’t comment. Between visitors, Santa said he was at the Coffee Pot the previous week. “Lots of kids,” he said. “Never had one cry all evening.” Santa’s Elf was helping children and adults at St. Clair Manor prepare for the festive season with false mustaches, fake top hats and more. Peppered throughout the historic home were local business owners offering Christmas gift ideas to visitors. Some shoppers were also interested in good looking headwear… not necessarily for Christmas presents but for their own comfort against the elements. Twin sisters, each having separate in-home

businesses, had set up their sections next to each other. Tamera McNulty offered decorative carry-alls and other items while her twin, Jessica Gonzalez offered warm, decorative caps. Gonzalez – Beanies & Booshkas – was a regular, having shown her home-made items every year since 2011. McNulty – Drift House – was in her first full year of business. Lilly Hays, a First Friday visitor, was wearing a Gonzales Beanie creation. The sisters were pleased with the traffic. “Lots of action,” they said. “We’re honored to be a part of this.” The Grinch, who was at Small Business Saturday, made another showing but stayed inside Readmore’s Hallmark due to the weather. Also entertaining shoppers were Megan Osman at Brenda’s Beanery, Joseph Helfrich at The Coffee Pot and Green de Villes at Montage Café.

Health Department lists holiday closings GREENVILLE – The Darke County Health Department will be closed for the holidays Dec. 25, and 26, and Jan. 1 and 2. That means only three immunization clinics are left for this year. The clinic is open on Tuesdays from 8-10:30 a.m., and 2-5 p.m., on a walkin basis. As 2014 comes to an end it is a good idea to check your child’s im-

munization record to be sure it is up to date. Children can complete the primary series by 18 months of age, and will then need boosters for kindergarten. Seventh graders are required to receive a booster shot of Tdap. Several other vaccines are recommended for this age group. College-bound individuals may require immunizations prior to attending

college classes, or living on campus. Then, as adults, annual flu shots and a tetanus booster every 10 years are recommended. For adults age 65 and over, there are new recommendations concerning the pneumonia vaccines. If there are any questions, call the Health Department at 548-4196. Their hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

GREENVILLE - Over 500 tickets were sold for Saturday, CLINTON Dec. 6 speRANDALL cial holiday Staff Writer bluebagmedia.com music event, Christmas with The Quest. The stage at the Memorial Hall in Greenville was transformed into holiday array of lighting and decorations as the local Christian music band The Quest entertained the crowd with a full selection of classic Christmas carols and even some of the band’s original music. The Quest band is made up of lead singer Tim Yount, lead guitarist Chad Lemons and Todd Matthew on the bass. According to the guys, the idea for the Christmas show started out as a vision that each of them then agreed to “go for it”. As planning for the show progressed they band brought on drummer Travis Laws and popular local singer/musician Rosie Baltes. They then added a narration part to the event which brought

The group received a standing ovation at the conclusion of the show by the hundreds of fans in attendance. “The community support for the show was

The library a safe place with lots of action GREENVILLE – “The library is no longer just a quiet place BOB to read,” said ROBINSON Greenville Associate Editor bluebagmedia.com Friends of the Library President Jan Boyer. “It’s a safe place to be in the community. We serve people from all walks of life here… it’s just a good place to be.” It’s also an active place to be with events taking place within its walls on a regular basis, the most recent being the library’s annual Christmas Open House, the last event of the calendar year. Visitors of all ages were enjoying homemade treats and punch, checking out books, tapes and videos offered for loan and, of course, waiting to see Santa Claus and his wife, Mrs. Claus. The Friends offered a limited selection of free books (donations requested) next to the treats table downstairs, and conducted its used book sale on the second floor. Christmas music was offered in the background with Alex Vehre on the violin alternating with Nancy Jackson on the flute. “We’ve had a lot of traffic,” said Library Director John Vehre. “We have Santa and Mrs. Claus coming in every year… so far (it was noon) over 40 kids have visited them.” He noted when the open house started 15 years earlier it used to be a membership drive. “Not so much anymore,” he added. “However, it’s been a good year. Tri-Village Local Schools expands STEM program NEW MADISON – Tri-Village Local Schools has received a $10,000 grant from America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. The district will use the money to expand their STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program for all students in third through eighth grade. This grant will allow the school to purchase software and provide professional development for teachers to increase interactive STEM investigations. Students will participate in inquiry-based educational opportunities that focus on

critical thinking in mathematics, science and engineering, through the use of LittleBits connecting circuits and a 3D printer. The district’s goal is to improve STEM awareness and knowledge among the students. “The elementary, middle and high schools are working together to increase opportunities for students, and we are working together as a staff to improve our own skills,” said Kim Puckett, Tri-Village STEM educator. “We’re really focused on inspiring younger students to work hard to prepare them for the STEM opportunities

School administrators then designed a sciencebased project for the grant application. Once all of the school district applications were submitted, a panel of math and science teachers reviewed each application and selected finalists. An advisory council, composed of farmer-leaders with an interest in agriculture and education, then selected the winning grant applications from a pool of finalists. “Agriculture has become one of the most technologically advanced industries, so farmers are very aware of the

PITSBURG – Franklin Monroe FFA members recently attended the 20th annual Greenhand hosted by the Versailles FFA Chapter. The conference, designed for first year members, gave the students the opportunity to learn about the various opportunities in the FFA, the importance of and how to set goals, and the importance of teamwork and communications. Nineteen Greenhands met on a Saturday morning to travel to Versailles HS for the conference. The theme this year was First Down and Life to Go. After the welcome by Versailles FFA and National FFA Officers, a mixer was held to help members get to know others in attendance. Four workshops were then held that included Opportunities in FFA/Leadership, Teamwork, Goal Setting, Communication, and SAE Exploration. Those attending also had an opportunity to view several Career Development Events sessions. FFA members in attendance had hands on activities to better enable the students to grasp the concepts that were taught in each of the sessions. A pizza and sub lunch was enjoyed by the FFA members followed by cooperative games. Advisors attending the day’s activities participated in a session updating them on changes coming from the National and State FFA Offices and on the AET Record Book
