THE EARLY BIRD NEWSPAPER
WEEKEND EDITION - DECEMBER 17, 2017
THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF THE GREAT DARKE COUNTY FAIR!
‘Special Wish’ project to provide a merrier Christmas SUSAN HARTLEY

GREENVILLE – Christmas will be a little merrier for three local families, thanks to Greenville High School. Students, staff and GHS basketball fans made a $1 donation for stars to be displayed at the school in support of a student council fundraiser held last week. “We called it our ‘special wish’ project to help provide a little extra for the holidays,” said student council adviser Carol Paul. Students also donated money during first period
classes, Paul said. “The first place class earned a pizza lunch” which was enjoyed this past Monday. So far, the service project fundraisers have netted $1,150, Paul said. One of the goals behind the student councilled fundraising project, says Mariah Nicholas, a junior studying in the Career Technology Center’s Med-Tech program, was to “motivate the students and let them know the issues going on in our community” with the three families chosen to receive donations “and to give them a good Christmas.” Each of the three fam-
ilies will be presented their donations during a special assembly before school is out for the Christmas holiday, Paul explained. The 40-member student council was given an assignment to think of how they’d like to provide service this Christmas, coming up with the idea to raise money for families who have experienced a life changing event. “One of the families lost everything they had in a fire,” Paul said, while another family’s mom is “dealing with breast cancer.” Kenton and Lindsey Stacy, both graduates of GHS, recently had to
relocate to Texas where Kenton is being treated for injuries he sustained last month when an Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) exploded while he was on duty in Syria. Student Council President Landin Brown believes asking his fellow GHS students to donate monetarily “helps to get them in the Christmas spirit. It’s important for us to ban together and show our support” for those who are facing challenges, he said. It’s not too late to donate to the student council’s fundraiser. If interested, money or checks may be dropped off at either the Career Tech

Township trustees treated to Christmas banquet LINDA MOODY

GREENVILLE – An estimated 250 people attended the Darke County Township Association (DCTA) Christmas Banquet Tuesday night at Romers in Greenville. Outgoing President Ed Huff Jr. provided the welcome, with the Greenville High School Jazz Scene, under the direction of J.R. Price, providing entertainment during and after the meal. Also featured was the recognition of county officials and department heads, state officials, former county officials and DCTA presidents, as well as sponsors who made the evening possible. Darke County Common Pleas Court Judge
Jonathan Hein presided over the swearing-in of the newly-elected trustees, with the help of Margaret Hayes. Fellow officers presented Huff with a plaque recognizing his tenure as president of the organization from 2014-17. Vice President Jim Zumbrink made the presentation to Huff on behalf of himself and Secretary Debbie Kuhnle and Treasurer Dave Brewer. “It’s been an honor to work with everybody,” said Huff. “I’m speechless. I have never been at a loss for words. But, like a bad penny, I will still show up.” The new president, it was noted, will be Justin Hines, with the other officers remaining the same. Another highlight of the event was the give-

ARCANUM – The Arcanum Business Association partnered with the Arcanum Athletic Boosters to host the inaugural Christmas in the Park & Horse Parade this past Saturday. With a number of holiday festivities throughout the day in Ivester Park and the Arcanum High School, lighted horse-drawn carriages made their way down Main Street that evening to cap off the event. Though a chill was in the air, snowfall gave the parade that Christmas feel. Even Santa Claus himself making his way to town. “I couldn’t wipe the smile off of my face and all that snow during the horse parade really set the mood,” Arcanum Business Association president Josh Urlage told The Early Bird.

There will be lots of food, so come and get acquainted with the vendors. A legislative reception will be held at the statehouse on Wednesday, with the board of directors’ elections. There will be at least six new electees. Thursday will be casino night and Friday, there will be doughnuts with Matthew DeTemple and a luncheon and a swearing in of new officers and board of directors. Saturday, there will be panels of people talking about township

“From all of the wonderful sponsors to everyone around the community…it was a great team effort! Urlage explained that the event was just a better way to celebrate the holiday season, rather than both groups doing separate events during the month of December.
“Why not come together and celebrate the season with one event-filled day,” Urlage noted. He says they look forward to another successful event in 2018, and with suggestions by the community they will add/ change some things to make it even better.
GREENVILLE – The Darke County United Way is pleased to announce that Greenville Technology, Inc. and its employees showed an increase in their giving to the 2018 United Way Campaign by 46.2 percent over the last year. They raised $41,709.84 during their fall campaign pledge drive. “We are extremely appreciative of GTI’s ongoing support of the Darke County United Way. What makes their figure even more impressive is that the United Way is not the only charitable organization that they support. GTI has created a culture of philanthropy and giving within its walls. truly a community-minded business that strives to make Darke County a better place to live and work,” stated Christy Baker, Executive Director for the United Way. On behalf of the Darke County United Way Board of Directors, we would like to thank GTI and their dedicated staff for helping us to fight for the health,
education, and financial stability of every resident in this community. Darke County United Way served over 30,000 residents last year through their 24 non-profit health and human service programs in the county. To learn more about Darke County United Way visit www.darkecountyunitedway.org.

The ofďŹ cer made contact with the driver, Jordon Jenkinson, who said he was not aware his headlights were not on. While speaking with the individuals in the vehicle the ofďŹ cer could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the inside. The ofďŹ cer also noticed a green leafy vegetation on Jenkinson’s shirt and pants. The ofďŹ cer asked Jenkinson where the marijuana was at due to still having residue on his person. Jenkinson said it was in the center console. Jenkinson

ald had a warrant from Darke County for a probation violation for a heroin possession charge. He was arrested and transported to the Darke County Jail on no bond. On Dec. 11 ofďŹ cers were dispatched to the 400 block of Central Avenue in reference to a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, an ofďŹ cer made contact with a female complainant who said she was arguing with Cody Bailey upstairs. An ofďŹ cer asked the complainant to have Bailey come downstairs to make sure everything was OK. The complainant came back downstairs and said Bailey refused to come down, but she allowed the ofďŹ cers to enter the apartment to check on him. Upon making contact with Bailey, dispatch advised the ofďŹ cers he had an active arrest warrant out of Miami County for a probation violation with a caution for violent tendencies. Bailey’s identity was conďŹ rmed and he was detained and advised of his warrant. Bailey was transported to the county line and released to a Miami County Sheriff’s Deputy. On Dec. 10 an ofďŹ cer was dispatched to Walmart on the report of an inividual with a warrant through Randolph County, Ind. Upon arrival and search of the store, ofďŹ cers located Jesse Rhoades in an aisle between the men’s clothing department and the pharmacy area. When ofďŹ cers made contact with Rhoades they saw a black ďŹ xed knife in a sheath on Rhoades’ left hip. One of the ofďŹ cers removed the knife and secured it in his duty belt. OfďŹ cers saw a second knife in Rhoades’ front right pocket and tried to remove it. As the ofďŹ cer attempted to remove the knife, Rhoades took off running through the men’s clothing department. The ofďŹ cers pursued Rhoades, giving commands for him to stop. Rhoades attempted to turn right towards the front of the store at which time one of the ofďŹ cers was able to displace his balance and Rhoades fell into a display rack. After falling into the rack the ofďŹ cer was able to get Rhoades onto the ground. Once on the ground Rhoades began to reach for what ofďŹ cers believed to be was the second knife. Rhoades continued to actively resist ofďŹ cers and and reach further under his body. One of the ofďŹ cers delivered knee strikes to Rhoades’ mid-section in an attempt to dislodge the knife and gain compliance
from Rhoades and secure his left arm. After several knee strikes, Rhoades obeyed orders. After being restrained, ofďŹ cers conducted a pat down of Rhoades. He was transported to a police cruiser. Dispatch conďŹ rmed the warrant from Randolph County for failure to appear on an original charge of resisting law enforcement. Rhoades was transported to the Darke County Jail where the ofďŹ cers were informed Rhoades would need to be medically cleared before they could house him. He was then transported to Wayne Healthcare where he was treated and released with abrasions on the ďŹ ngers of his right hand, bruised ribs and a headache. Rhoades was transported back to the jail where he was incarcerated for his warrant and is awaiting extradition. Rhoades was also issued a citation for resisting arrest. Shoplifting
On Dec. 11 an ofďŹ cer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a theft that occurred on Dec. 6. Upon arrival, the ofďŹ cer made contact with Walmart’s loss prevention ofďŹ cer, who said he was recently informed by a store employee of a theft that took place the day before. Surveillance video footage showed three suspects entering the store through the general merchandise doors. One was a white male wearing a black hooded Bengals sweatshirt with dark colored pants. The other two were white females and possibly in their teens. The females walked around the store while pushing a cart. The male walked with the females and began loading items in the cart in the electronic section of the store. After loading the cart, the male left the females and left the store. The females then walked throughout the store for several minutes then pushed the cart out grocery exit, without paying for the items. An employee sees the females pushing the cart out and he began questioning them, asking to see their receipt. The females ignored the employee’s request and began walking faster to a car in the parking lot. The employee reported the females said their mother had the receipt. The females loaded the items into the trunk of the vehicle then left the area. Upon checking the registration on the suspect vehicle given to the police, through LEADS/NCIC, it was discovered owner of the suspect vehicle is Ricky Wells of Dayton. Police checked his BMV picture through LEADS/ NCIC and conďŹ rm he was the male who loaded the items into the cart. The ofďŹ cer contacted Dayton PD and requested they go to the Wells’ residence and have him contact Greenville Police. Wells has not contacted Greenville as of the time the report was ďŹ led. The stolen items amount to $318. EARLY BIRD POLICY

Crash into pole injures local teens BY CLINTON RANDALL STAFF WRITER crandall@earlybirdpaper.com
UNION CITY, Ohio – Wintry road conditions were a key factor in crash into a utility pole that injured two local teens near Union City Tuesday evening. After 5 p.m., Darke County Deputies along with Union City, Ohio Fire Dept., Union City, Ohio Rescue and Union City, Ind. Rescue responded to an injury accident in the 11400 block of Staudt Road. Preliminary investigation revealed that 16-yearold Kyler Guillozet, of Rossburg, driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, was traveling southbound on Staudt Road when he lost control on the snow covered roadway and slid off the left side of the road. Guillozet’s car struck a mailbox and a utility pole, breaking the pole and causing a power outage in the area. The front seat passenger, 15-year-old Mason Hummel, of Rossburg, had to be mechanically extricated from the vehicle. Both were transported to Wayne HealthCare with non-life-threatening in-
juries. Guillozet was later transported to Miami Valley Hospital. The Darke County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind motorists to be extremely careful during this time of year with snow and ice covered roadways.
GREENVILLE – A Greenville man chose to accept a plea bargain from the state and enter guilty plea after being indicted for assault and burglary charges following a July 3 incident. Joshua Back, 40, of Greenville appeared with defense attorney Randall E. Breaden Thursday in the Darke County Common Pleas Court. Per the deal, the state chose to amend a count of Aggravated Burglary (F1) to a third-degree Burglary. Back was hesitant to enter a plea to a second count, misdemeanor assault, stating that offense did not occur during the crime. “The assault is a violent offense against a woman, that never happened…I have a problem with that,” Back told the judge.
After a lengthy discussion with his attorney and Judge Jonathan P. Hein, Back reluctantly entered an Alford Plea to the as-

Mother-daughter team opens downtown bakery BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com
GREENVILLE – Just in time for Christmas, Kathy’s Cookies & Pies is open at 316 S. Broadway in Greenville. Mother-daughter duo Kathy Jarrett and Kacie Langley, both of Arcanum, opened their quaint bakery in mid-November. Formerly Janet’s Bakery, the location is a perfect ďŹ t for Jarrett’s dream to bake and decorate all those cooky recipes and decorating ideas she’s been collecting over the years. “My husband would ďŹ nd me under a blanket watching cookie tutorials on my phone,â€? Jarrett said of husband Jim. “And he would show everyone pictures of my cookies on his phone. His support has been tremendous.â€? Jarrett dreamed about opening a bakery for quite a while, looking at the Broadway property several times before taking a leap of faith. Quitting her job in a Franklin dental practice that she’d had since 1984, Jarrett talked her daughter into joining in the bakery adventure. They set a grand opening for the day of the Greenville Horse Parade. “It wasn’t such a grand

opening, Langley said with a laugh. The parade was canceled due to weather. “We donated a lot of cookies to the hospital, Jarrett said – cookies she’d hope to sell at her grand opening. Although the grand opening didn’t turn out quite like she planned, Jarrett said customers have been very supportive of the bakery. “We just can’t say no, Jarrett said, to those placing orders for Christmas cookie trays or pies – including a cream pie that Jarrett says “is almost just like the Gerschuh’s pie sold for years at the Gerschuh restaurant on Sweitzer Strreet. Langley said she was honored her mother asked her to join in the bakery venture. A stay-at-home mom to three young children –

Ohio senators work together for NDAA WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Rob Portman (R-OH) recently announced that President Trump signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) Conference Report, which includes several bipartisan amendments the senators offered that will support jobs and the important research mission at WrightPatterson Air Force Base’s Air Force Research Lab. “The men and women at Wright-Patt’s Air Force Research Lab provide needed research to our military and the Department of Defense,â€? said Brown. “This law will make sure these highly-skilled workers can continue to do their jobs and help meet our national security needs.â€? The senators’ amendments will: * Increase payments to researchers who develop innovations and technology to support our nation’s military. Federal researchers - including those at WrightPatterson’s Air Force Research Lab - are responsible for major innovations that have helped our military and servicemembers. The Brown- Portman amendment would encourage the best in this ďŹ eld to remain in government service by increasing royalties for patented or licensed innovations. * Provide exibility for minor military construction. The amendment would make permanent programs to fund repairs or minor military construction to a laboratory’s infrastructure ensuring that facilities are updated and have the capacity for new innovation. The amendment would require labs to report unfunded minor construction projects so that Congress can take action to close capacity gaps, which could hamper research. The amendment also makes permanent additional exibility to fund
research and train and retain personnel. * Support U.S. manufacturing jobs that help meet national defense needs. The Manufacturing Technology Division of Wright-Patterson’s Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) manages a key national defense industrial base and manufacturing program that enables the federal government to support defense-related manufacturing when domestic capabilities aren’t able to meet national security needs. The Brown-Portman amendment would prohibit the Pentagon from abruptly shifting project management responsibility away from the experts at AFRL to others in the Pentagon until a formal assessment of the program’s management is conducted, and Congress is briefed on the results. Prohibiting this sudden shift in management would ensure that any major changes that could impact ongoing or future projects or personnel would ďŹ rst be reviewed by the Senate Banking Committee, on which Brown is the lead Democrat, and which oversees the program. It would also ensure that in the interim skilled managers and specialized personnel with years of experience will continue to oversee this critical program, saving taxpayers money by controlling costs, eliminating wasteful administrative duplication, and maintaining efďŹ cient project oversight. * Support Wright-Patterson’s role in developing unmanned aerial systems. The amendment will boost collaboration between the Department of Defense and the Federal Aviation Administration so the two can work together to integrate UAS into the national airspace and develop best practices for use of this new technology. WrightPatterson’s Air Force Lab is a center for developing UAS.
Marriage is too hard to do twice
It’s time for my yearly dote to describe how much I love my wife and how she’s the world to me. It is 600 words of heartfelt mush and pure gobbledygook. I even have my thesaurus atthe-ready to choose the best synonyms to describe how incredible my wife is. On Dec. 14 the love of my life and I celebrated our 21st anniversary. When we stood at the altar on our wedding day I sang to her from the bottom of my heart. If you know this Elvis song go ahead and sing along‌ Treat me like a fool, treat
me mean and cruel, but love me. Break my faithful heart, tear it all apart, but love me.â€? She said, “I do.â€? For the past 21 years I’ve been trying to convince her that this wasn’t part of our vows. Maybe I should have gone with my ďŹ rst choice of songs‌ Who Put the Bomp in the Bomp, Bah, Bomp, Bah Bomp. I realize 21 years isn’t even halfway to golden and only a third of the way to diamond, but for us it’s a milestone. It means our marriage is now old enough to drink. Believe me when I say there have been a few times our marriage could have used a case, a bottle or a ďŹ fth (maybe even 2/5ths). If you’ve never had an argument or felt frustration in your marriage you probably aren’t doing it right. We’ve deďŹ nitely had our ups and downs. However, the ups have far exceeded the downs and I usually struggle to remember the arguments or the reasons why we were mad at each other. But I do remember the ďŹ rst time I tried to
hold her hand (keyword is tried), the ďŹ rst kiss (even though she thinks it happened someplace else‌she’s wrong), how I proposed, and sewing a button on my tuxedo the day of our wedding. Most of all I remember the laughter that has been in our home from the very beginning. I’m not a family therapist and do not have a degree in psychology, but laughter has to be one of the most important keys to having a healthy and successful marriage. Even the Bible recognizes how important laughter is - “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.â€? One translation ďŹ nishes the verse saying “It is a slow death being gloomy all the time.â€? If I had to translate the verse according to our marriage I would have to say my wife is the Pepto Bismol to my nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea and the Preparation H to my... well you can ďŹ gure out where that’s going. My translation of the second
part of that verse may be off a little. I’m reading it that she will still be the death of me, but it will happen quickly. Sometimes it feels like the busyness of life gets in the way, but I still adore the feeling of her lips giving me a quick peck on my forehead or cheek, the way she twirls the hair on the back of my head or when I’m driving and she reaches over and grabs my hand and holds it‌until the lives are renewed on the games she’s playing on her cell phone (that’s not romance as much as it is boredom). We’ve asked each other if we’ve had regrets about marrying each other. My answer continues to be no. I couldn’t be happier to have her in my life. She’s my best friend, gets my jokes (most of the time) and tolerates my sarcasm; who could ask for more? We’ve also asked each other if we would ever get married again and we both agreed – ABSOLUTELY NOT. Marriage is way too hard to do more than once.
AG Mike DeWine warns Ohioans of grant scams COLUMBUS – Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine recently warned Ohioans to beware of phony offers for federal grants. In recent weeks, the Ohio Attorney General’s OfďŹ ce has received dozens of reports of grant scams from people across Ohio. “Scam artists will call and say you can get a $9,000 grant from the federal government if you pay a few hundred dollars ďŹ rst. It’s a lie,â€? Attorney General DeWine said. “The truth is the scam artists will take your money, but you won’t get anything in return.â€? The scam often begins when someone receives a phone call or Facebook message about a grant opportunity. Con artists may

claim the person has been selected for a grant for being a good citizen, paying taxes, or not having a criminal record, and they tell the person to pay a few hundred dollars to cover processing fees or taxes in order to receive the larger payout. In reality, there is no grant and any money the person sends will be lost. Most people who report the scam haven’t lost any money, but overall this year, about 50 people have reported losses ranging from $200 to $48,000 to grant scams. Payment usually is made using wire transfers or iTunes cards, which makes it difďŹ cult to track or recover the money once it’s sent.
To help consumers avoid grant scams, Attorney General DeWine offered the following tips: * Don’t pay up front to receive a grant you never applied for. * Be cautious any time you’re asked to pay using a gift card, wire transfer, or money order, which are commonly used in scams. * Keep in mind that true government grants typically are awarded to organizations, not to individual citizens, and information about federal grants is available for free at www. Grants.gov. Report potential scams to the Ohio Attorney General’s OfďŹ ce at www.OhioProtects.org or by calling 800-282-0515.

Versailles Lady Tigers double-up New Bremen BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com VERSAILLES – The Versailles Lady Tigers used a solid fourth quarter defensive effort to defeat the visiting New Bremen Lady Cardinals 58-29. “Overall I thought it was a pretty clean game,” said Versailles coach Jacki Stonebraker. “I just wish we would have pushed the ball a little bit more in different parts of the game.” New Bremen jumped out to a 3-0 advantage with a Paige Jones three pointer at 6:40 in the first followed by a Kami McEldowney bucket at 6:18 good for a 3-2 score. Back-to-back Lindsey Winner buckets had the Lady Tigers showing six points on the board at 3:33 in the first, but it was a Jones basket and a Hannah Tenkman New Bremen trey keeping the visitor in front with an 8-6 lead. Each team would hold three leads in the early going before the Lady Tigers would take advantage of
the remaining time on the first quarter clock to go on a 14-2 run and close out the opening period of play with a 20-10 lead. “I expected that out of Bremen,” Stonebraker said of Bremen’s early leads. “They’re a nice ball club. They’re going to get up and down the floor with us, but I really felt as we went through the game we had more sub rotations and we could get up and down the floor the whole game instead of just for a quarter.” Versailles 5’3” sophomore Caitlin McEldowney paced the Lady Tigers with eight first quarter points including two threepointers, 5’7” sophomore Danielle Kunk added two triples good for six points, 6’2” sophomore Lindsey Winner’s two buckets for four points and a bucket from senior Kami McEldowney. “Caitlin off the bench – that’s tough as a starter,” noted Stonebraker. “Caitlin usually starts but I went with the “bigs” this time because Bremen is
a lot bigger. Caitlin never skipped a beat, she came right in and took some shots and kind of opened the gap. Caitlin and Kunk both did a nice job taking good outside shots when they were open.” Period No. 2 had Lindsey Winner knocking down three baskets, 6’2” senior Danielle Winner with two buckets and Kunk nailing her third triple of the night to give the home team a 13-7 advantage sending the teams to the break with Versailles leading 33-17. “They are only sophomores (C. McEldowney, L. Winner and D. Kunk) and, especially early in the season they still have a lot of growing to do, but I like the way they are playing right now.” New Bremen held the advantage on the third quarter board with 10-9 scoring, with the teams heading to the final period with the Lady Tigers holding a 42-27 lead. Versailles limited the Lady Cardinals to two fourth-quarter free throws
while six Lady Tigers were getting on the board good for 16 points including a basket and 2-2 at the line from Danielle Winner, a three pointer from both Caitlin McEldowney and Ellen Peters and a basket each from Hailey McEldowney, Kelsey Custenborder and Mallory Marshal. Versailles put four players in double figures on the night with 10 Lady Tigers getting in the scoring column. “It’s a good night when Kami (McEldowney) can score two and everybody else can pick her up,” Coach Stonebraker said of her senior leader’s two points on the night. VERSAILLES Scoring – C. McEldowney 11, D. Kunk 11, D. Winner 11, L. Winner 10, E. Ording 4, E. Peters 3, K. McEldowney 2, H. McEldowney 2, K. Custenborder 2, M. Versailles wrestlers win on mats at Greenville BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – Versailles defeated Greenville 63-12 in a Tuesday night non-conference wrestling meet. The Green Wave wrestling program, a once dominant GWOC program is now on the rebound under GHS varsity coach David Guillozet filling all but three weight classes while forfeiting three matches against the always strong Versailles wrestling program under the guidance of coach AJ Bey. “The numbers are up by a few bodies,” said the Wave’s Guillozet prior to the evening’s match. “We can almost fill every weight class – eventually we will. We have a lot of young kids that are performing well for us. We’re looking up right now.” “We have them (weight
classes) all full,” Bey said before the competition began. “We have a couple backups in a couple different spots. We have a pretty nice team.” “We’re having some growing pains with some of the younger kids which we knew we would,” continued Bey. “We have four freshmen in the lineup right now but they are coming along pretty good – we’ll be ok.” “We return quite a few,” Bey said of his returning starters. “We lost for last year, so the four freshmen are in the lineup in some of those spots.” Versailles 285 pound Jeffrey Ware gave Versailles a 6-0 lead by way of a forfeit followed by a Kobe Epperly 8-3 decision over Andrew Stachler upping the Tigers lead to 9-0. Greenville got on the board with a 9-8 Drayk Kallenberger decision in
the 113 pound class over Trevor Huber to make it a 9-3 score. Versailles took a 15-9 advantage with Jacob Poling winning the 120 pound match by forfeit. Three consecutive Versailles pins had the visitors up 33-3 with Cael Bey earning a pin over Nathaniel Anthony in the 126 pound division, a Preston Platfoot pin over 132 pound Dean Hurd and a Kyle Wuebker pin over Riley Slade in the 138 pound class. Greenville battled back to make it a 33-12 score with Jacob Mikesell winning an 8-5 decision over Dalton Didier in the 145 pound division and a Jacob Goldsmith pin over Nathan Wagner in the 152 pound class. “We showed some good things,” said Guillozet. “A couple boys did some really good things.”

Noah Gilmore took the 160 pound match by a forfeit for the Tigers before Versailles won the final four matches of the night by way of pins. Versailles 170 pound Derek Cavin with a pin over Zane Mancillas, Tyler Gigandet with a pin at the 182 pound class over Hadyn Sharp, Isaac Grilliot earned a pin over Tytan
Grote in the 195 pound division and Austin Nerderman with a pin over Zach Foster in the 220 pound class. “We’re performing to where I thought we would be,” Coach Bey stated. “We left one or two go but we battled in some of the close ones,” “We’re still climbing the mountain,” added Bey.
“We’re not where we want to be yet – we’re working hard to get there.” “They have exceeded my expectations for as young as we are,” said Guillozet following the match. “They have definitely put forth the effort and they’re working hard. We fought – they gave it their all. Very proud of them.”

Lady Wave play well in loss to powerful Tippecanoe GAYLEN BLOSSER
BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com
SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com
GREENVILLE – The 64-36 ďŹ nal score between Greenville and the Tippecanoe Lady Red Devils does not portray the quality of play the Lady Wave displayed against one of the state’s best women’s basketball teams. “Tipp’s incredible,â€? said Greenville coach Rachael Kerns. “They’re deďŹ nitely the best team on our side of the GWOC (American North) and they could probable give anybody in the GWOC a run for their money.â€? “We just asked the girls to come to this game, just compete, just be a competitor and they really came out and did that from the getgo,â€? added Kerns. Tipp brought a 5-0 record into the game outscoring their opponents 62-36 (308-180) and returned home with a perfect 6-0 record and the same 62-36 average margin of victory. The Lady Red Devils opened the night with a 2-0 advantage with Morgan Gilbert getting a GHS 2-2 tying basket with 5:58 showing. Tipp moved back to a 4-2 lead before Greenville’s 5’4â€? junior guard Jada Garland nailed a three pointer with 2:52 showing to give the Lady Wave a 5-4 lead bringing a timeout from the Tippecanoe bench. The Lady Devils took advantage of an 11-0 run to close out ďŹ rst quarter scoring to lead 15-5. Lady Wave 5’6â€? sophomore Haleigh Mayo drilled three second-quarter three pointers, Garland nailed her second triple of the game and a Saki Nakamura free throw had Greenville putting 13 points on the board while Tipp was scoring 16 points sending the teams to the break with the Lady Devils up 31-18. “Tipp only being up 13 at half says a lot of where we have come in our program,â€? said Kerns. Tipp took period No. 3 by a 13-9 score with Lani Shilt leading GHS with a trey and 2-2 at the line good for ďŹ ve points and four Nakamura

points by way of a basket and two free throws. Greenville got ďŹ ve Payton Brandenburg fourth-quarter points, a triple and a bucket and Gilbert’s 4-4 at the line to pace the Lady Wave with nine points. “Tipp’s going to win a lot of games if not almost all of their games on their schedule,â€? Kerns noted. “There is a reason for that. They have two girls already committed to play (college ball). There’s a couple others that could go play somewhere if they wanted to.â€? Tipp was led in fourth quarter points by Maddie Frederick with two three pointers a two baskets good for 10 of the visitors 20 fourth-quarter points. Maddie Frederick, one of the nation’s top 2018 ESPN HoopGurlz Basketball prospect and recent NCAA D-I Iowa State signee scored 15 points on the night. NCAA D-II Cedarville University signee, Allison Mader led the Lady Red Devils and all scorers with 19 points. “Payton Brandenuerg guarding the girl going to Iowa State,â€? Kerns noted as one of the highlights of the night. “Yes – she ended hav-

der to continue to build the swim program at Versailles. Stuart Baltes and Cole Condon are the two juniors on the swim team this year. Both swimmers competed strong for the team last year and were big for the Tigers in the post-season. Ethan Davis is their only sophomore and is new to high school swim this year. In addition, they have ďŹ ve freshmen swimmers including Jack Detrick, Jonathen Nelson, Owen Schultz, Ryan Subler, and Jarett Petitjean. The team looks forward to seeing what their new swimmers accomplish this year. With the larger numbers, they have some depth to work with which will be important when it comes to
scoring extra points at invitationals. Last year the boys’ team won the Coldwater Cavalier “UnofďŹ cial MACâ€? Meet and they hope to repeat this win again this year. The boys are coached by head swim coach Mark Travis. For the swimming schedule and updates throughout the season, visit the high school team’s website at http://www.versailles.k12. oh.us. COVINGTON – The Versailles Tigers took advantage of a 15-3 thirdquarter to defeat the Covington Buccaneers 60-44 in a Saturday night nonconference match-up. “This isn’t an easy place to play,â€? Versailles Coach Travis Swank said of the host Buccs. “I’m just happy to get out of here with a victory and go ďŹ ght another day.â€? Michael Stammen nailed a three-pointer to give the Tigers an early 3-0 ďŹ rst quarter lead that would swell to a 20-9 advantage after one period of play. “He’s getting more composed as he’s going through the year,â€? Swank said of Stammen’s play. “Kind of just thrust into the situation with Kyle Jones having a shoulder injury. He’s learning on the y but he is a quick learner and he’s a really good student in school. He’s doing really nice things for us.â€? AJ Ahrens led Versailles in the ďŹ rst period with half the team’s points, scoring 10 including a three-pointer. “He played strong, he played aggressive,â€? Coach Swank said of his senior. “I know he ended up fouling out but a lot of his fouls were good fouls because he’s hustling, working his tail off in there and getting loose balls. I’ll take those types of fouls for our team because they are good fouls, being aggressive and trying to be about the team win – we’ll take that.â€? Period No. 2 had the teams each adding 14 points to the board to send the teams to the break with Versailles holding a 34-27 advantage. Five Tigers contributed points to the second quarter board led by Justin Ahrens ďŹ ve points including a three-pointer. Wiggins Bradley hit two second quarter threes to lead Covington with six

points in period. Versailles took advantage of solid third quarter defense limiting the Buccs to three free throws while Keaton McEldowney was leading the Tigers with eight points in the period sending the teams to the ďŹ nal period of play with Versailles leading 49-30. “We made some adjustments at halftime,â€? stated Swank. “Nothing really x’s and o’s, just a gut-check call with our energy level because I just felt like we were sleepwalking through. They responded and I was happy to see that.â€? “He brought a lot of positive energy here tonight – was pushing the ball, was running the oor hard, was getting offensive rebounds, was the Energizer Bunny for us that we really needed,â€? Swank noted of McEldowney’s play. “He stepped up to the plate like a senior should and led our team to a hard fought victory.â€? Justin Ahrens scored nine of the Tigers’ 11 fourth
quarter points before taking a seat on the bench to close out the contest as the game’s leading scorer with 21 points. “Justin can see the oor just as well as anybody out there and when he wants to its delivered on point all the time,â€? said Swank. “We need him to do that because he’s going to be again the focus just like last year – the focus of a lot of teams and if he makes his teammates better it’s just going to open him up that much more.â€? Greenville Fire Dept. says keep your holidays from going up in ames GREENVILLE – For most of us, the holiday season represents a time for family festivities and good cheer. What few of us consider is that the holiday season is a time when there is an increased risk of home ďŹ res. According to The City of Greenville Fire Department (GFD), many households engage in holiday activities that serve as some of the leading causes of U.S. home ďŹ res, including cooking. Christmas trees, candle usage and holiday decorations also signiďŹ cantly contribute to the seasonal causes of home ďŹ res. With unattended cooking as the leading cause of U.S. home ďŹ res and home ďŹ re injuries, GFD reminds you to stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food. Most cooking ďŹ res involve the stovetop, so keep anything that can
catch ďŹ re away from it and turn off the stove when you leave the kitchen, even if it’s for a short period of time. If you are simmering, baking or roasting food, check it regularly and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking. Create a “kid-free zoneâ€? of at least three feet around the stove and areas where hot food and drinks are prepared or carried to. Candles are widely used in homes throughout the holidays and December is the peak month for home candle ďŹ res. The nonproďŹ t National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) statistics show that two of every ďŹ ve home decoration ďŹ res are started by candles. Consider using ameless candles, which look and smell like real candles. However, if you do use traditional candles, keep them at least 12 inches away from anything
that can burn and remember to blow them out when you leave the room or go to bed. Use candle holders that are sturdy, won’t tip, over and are placed on uncluttered surfaces. Avoid using candles in the bedroom where more than one-third of U.S. candle ďŹ res begin or other areas where people may fall asleep. Lastly, never leave a child or pet alone in a room with a burning candle. According to NFPA, U.S. ďŹ re departments respond to an average of 210 home structure ďŹ res caused by Christmas trees per year. Three of every ten of them are caused by electrical problems and one in four result from a heat source that’s too close to the tree. GFD offers the following advice for picking, placing, and lighting the tree: * If you have an artiďŹ cial tree, be sure it’s labeled,
certiďŹ ed or identiďŹ ed by the manufacturer as ďŹ re-retardant. * If you choose a fresh tree, before placing it in the stand, cut 2 inches from the base of the trunk to prevent the green needles from falling off when touched. Add water to the tree stand, and be sure to water it daily. * Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit and is at least three feet away from any heat source like ďŹ replaces, space heaters, radiators, candles and heat vents or lights. * Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory and make sure you know whether they are designed for indoor or outdoor use. * Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of
light strands to connect. * Never use lit candles to decorate the tree. * Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving the home or going to bed. * After Christmas, get rid of the tree. Dried-out trees are a ďŹ re hazard and should not be left in the home or garage or placed outside the
home. * Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and to make them last longer. The City of Greenville Fire Department can be reached at 548-3040 to answer any questions or you can visit www.nfpa.org/holiday for more information and safety tips.
UC Lions host Ladies Night UNION CITY, Ind. – On Dec. 12, the Union City Lions Club celebrated Christmas with their winter Ladies Night. Cheeseball project a ‘banner year’ for Eldorado church SUSAN HARTLEY

ELDORADO – The second weekend of December is cheeseball weekend for the ladies auxiliary of Eldorado’s First Universalist Church. Last Sunday, the church ladies – most who are in their 70s, 80, and 90s – spent time at Eikenberry’s in Greenville to mix up chipped beef, cream cheese, onions and seasonings – enough to make nearly 500 cheeseballs. “In addition to 100 pounds of beef, we ordered 260 pounds of cream cheese,” said Jill Vaniman, who heads up the cheeseball fundraiser. All the necessary ingredients are ordered from Eikenberrys, Vaniman said, as a thank you for letting the group use the store’s kitchen and heavy-duty mixer. The ladies used to meet at the church to make their cheeseballs. “Our original recipe came from our zucchini festival we used to have in Eldorado,” Vaniman explained. “To help with the festival, we’d sell cheeseballs at Christmas time.” That recipe only made two cheeseballs at a time. “When we were making only 50 or so, it wasn’t that bad,” Vaniman said. “We’d use our home mixers and made them in the church basement.” The last zucchini festival was held in 2002, Vaniman said. “When our church needed another fundraiser, we decided to use the cheeseball recipe and ended up making them again, two at a time.” Cheeseball sales took off and when the group started having to make 100 or more, they decided it was time to look for another way to mix it all up. “One of the ladies who shops at Eikenberry’s asked if we could use their big mixer. They told us we could come in on a Sunday after the bakery was finished. And they are kind enough to let us use the big mixer.” This year was “a banner year,” Vaniman said, with the group making nearly
500 cheeseballs. The process takes up to three days, with Saturday being “chip and chop day,” using food processors to chip the beef at the church. On Sunday, another work crew goes to Eikenberrys to mix it all up. The cheeseball project has become a family affair for Vaniman, with her son and daughter-in-law, David and Christa White, daughter Tiana White and niece, Jeannine Bussard all volunteering. “David and Christa lead the mixing group in figuring out how much to put in the mixer, Vaniman said. The tubs of cheeseball mixture are taken back to the church for Monday’s “Rolling Crew” to form the 14 to 15 oz. balls. Thanks to the cheeseballs and an Easter bazaar and dinner, also organized by the ladies auxiliary, needed improvements ae being made to the church building. A few years ago, the fundraisers paid for a handicap ramp to be installed outside to the sanctuary, Vaniman said. “This year we are having a wheelchair lift installed in the upstairs social room that will take people who can no longer manage the steps to the kitchen and dining area. We’re trying to get our older and handicap people access to both the upstairs and downstairs.” According to Vaniman, about 25 members attend Sunday services. “We have members coming from Dayton, Cincinnati, and Indiana,” Vaniman said, explaining that some are children of members who have passed away. “By children, I mean they could be in their 60s. We’ve taken on some pretty good projects, but this is probably the most expensive project we’ve had for a very long time. We called friends and family, and some of the people in the congregation gave special donations, knowing they might be the next ones to need it. We’re all growing older.” Those who are interested in seeing if there are any cheeseballs still available may call the church at (937) 273-3893.
GREENVILLE – For many, holiday decorations just would not be complete without the clackety clack of a model train circling under the Christmas tree. Lee Stanley, a retired police officer and Greenville High School history teacher has enjoyed sharing his love of model trains for the past 10 years during the holidays. A couple months before Christmas, Stanley sets up a Christmas train display in his home on East Fourth Street. “I’ll put a sign out ‘train’s open’ and if anybody wants to see them they are welcome,” Stanley said this past week. Stanley, 76, says he still has the very first engine he received for Christmas in 1954. In fact, he’s been collecting train sets, engines and décor for years. “I put up my special table, get it out in late October or the
first of November. I set the table up and I start decorating. I have to decide what I want to do.” Deciding what to set out for his Christmas display became quite the chore, since Stanley’s collection just kept growing and growing. “About four years ago I had 39 porcelain houses on the table and decided it was too much. I don’t put all of them out now. So every year it’s different.” Stanley said he divided his collection into thirds, put a third of them up one year, another third the next, and so on. Last year, Stanley set up his Coca-Cola train display, which included three collectible Coca-Cola houses and, of course, a Coke polar bear display. This year’s Christmas display features Stanley’s O gauge train set, he said. “Big Lionels. I have some that are quite rare, including a Lionel Pennsylvania G gauge, an electric train that ran over tracks with the overhead lines. It ran

on the East coast.” Some of the landscaping features in Stanley’s display include his own creations. “I made some of the mountains and I got a couple buildings that I made. They aren’t perfect, but I knew what I wanted them to look like.” Some collectors, Stanley said, want their train displays to be perfect. “But the world’s not that way.” Stanley’s basement is filled with his train displays, including an “Old West layout complete with
cowboys and Indians. I made a fort with swinging doors and an inside walkway for soldiers. The gates also open and close. It’s fun. I like to do things like that.” So if the “train’s open” sign is out at 1050 E. Fourth St., Greenville, then you’re in luck. “Not as many come (to look) as I would like,” Stanley said, inviting all who may be interested in the old-fashioned joy of a Christmas train to stop and enjoy his display.
Roberts sworn in as new GPD Lieutenant CLINTON RANDALL
STAFF WRITER crandall@earlybirdpaper.com
GREENVILLE – Former detective Eric Roberts officially was promoted as the Greenville Police Department’s newest lieutenant after being sworn in Monday afternoon by Mayor Steve Willman. Roberts joined the department in April of 1996 as a new officer and since then has worked over 16 years investigating crimes as a detective. In his new role as lieutenant, 47-year-old Roberts will oversee the day-to-day operations of both road pa-
trol and the detectives division for the GPD. “We got a lot of upcoming officers with more energy and drive to handle the cases. It has just come to a time after 16 years when I just needed the change,” Lt Roberts told The Early Bird. “I love the job, but getting some new blood in there may help make a bigger dent than what I was able to do,” he added. With the promotion, Roberts leaves a vacancy in the detective division that will soon be filled after a selection is made from interested applicants. He takes over the position previously

left open in August by the department’s new Police Chief Steve Strick. “I am very confident in his ability to get the job done and do it well,” Chief Strick
said about Lt Roberts. “We were hired on within a year of one another and I know he is a great officer and very dedicated.”
Niswonger wins Ansonia Lumber toy contest LINDA MOODY

ANSONIA – Harry Niswonger of Arcanum won the Ansonia Lumber Company’s toy contest again. Niswonger, who turned 93 on Dec. 24, has entered the top toy in the competition for at least the last three years. “I have entered it seven times, won five and finished second twice,” said Niswonger. This year’s entry was a fire truck made of hard maple and walnut. “I have to go to the fire truck for number one,” said Scott Phillips, who judges the Ansonia Lumber contest each year. “I know which one I would choose.” Niswonger, who was the featured exhibitor at the Great Darke County fair last year in the Domestic Arts Department, said he started working with wood after the death of his wife. “I work about everyday in my shop,” he said. “But I don’t spend long hours there.” Second place in the contest went to John Burnett with his monster truck obstacle course; third to Ken

Pence who also entered a jeep but won with his marble game; fourth to Harold Alley and his toy box; and fourth to Jim Hamsphire who entered a booby trap game. Additional entrants were Ron Myers with a wagon; Neal Pleiman with a rocker, jewelry box and desk; Donald Pearson, five trucks; Byron Brehm, a train; Gerald Brehm with a ball launcher; and Mitch McCabe, a cradle. “These toys will make a lot of children extremely happy,” Phillips said. “I’m

the biggest kid you ever saw. You aren’t going to go out and buy any of these toys. These are heirlooms. I hope God blesses you for what you have done here.” Trisha Hill from Operation Christmas Cheer was at the competition. This is the first time that organization has received these homemade toys, according to her. All of the winners received special prizes, and all entrants were given lumber supplied by Frank Miller Lumber in Union City, Ind. Phillips also presented
them with tablets from his television show The American Woodshop. Mitch McCabe who organizes the contest each year for the Ansonia Lumber Company said this is the 24th year for the contest. This year, however, he did note there was a decrease in the number of contestants as well as toys. Phillips, who is in his fourth decade of woodworking, said the Ansonia Lumber Company’s toy contest is the only one he judges.

With two shows on Dec. 21, 6 and 8:30 p.m., they are hoping to make a big impact for the holiday season. Please bring nonperishable food items for the food pantry. Christmas Drive needs help to reach goal GREENVILLE – The 2017 Darke County Community Christmas Drive is going well; though with just two weekends left it’s hoped that it will ďŹ nish strong to meet or exceed last year’s totals. After the ďŹ rst three weekends a total of $14,848.58 has been collected. Last year $30,427.75 was given which went to help the good work of FISH, Community Unity, the Grace Resurrection Community Center and the Faith United Methodist Food Bank in Arcanum, the Ansonia United Methodist Food Bank and the Castine Area Food Bank. No money is paid to any of the volunteers and all of the proceeds remain in Darke County. The efforts will continue on Dec. 22 and 23. At most of the 11 locations donations will be gratefully accepted between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Churches helping with the “bell ringingâ€? include Coletown Christian, Greenville Missionary, St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, St. Paul’s Lutheran, St. Paul’s Episcopal, Bible Fellowship, First United Methodist, Stelvideo Christian, East Zion, Trinity Wesleyan, Greenville Church of Brethren, Evangelical United Methodist, First Presbyterian, Beamsville Christian, Fort Jefferson, Cedar Grove, New Madison United Methodist and First Universalist Church in New Madison. The Castine Church of the Brethren, the Arcanum Lion’s Club and Faith United Methodist help with the effort in Arcanum while various churches help in Ansonia. Organizations helping out include the Greenville Lion’s Club and the Greenville National Bank in addition to the Rotary and the Kiwanis who cover all 10 days of the drive. Also collecting funds every day of the drive are the Oak-
land Church of the Brethren, St. John’s Lutheran Church and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The work of all of these volunteers is greatly appreciated. Besides the various locations around the area, donations can also be made to the “Darke County Community Christmas Drive at P.O. Box
433, Greenville, Ohio 45331 or by dropping off a donation to Community Christmas Drive Treasurer Mike Boyer at the main branch of the Greenville National Bank. Any questions about the drive can be directed to Co-Chairman Joseph Soley at 937-547-0533.

GREENVILLE – Instead of taken the case to trial, Ethan E. Louk, 24, decided to accept a plea bargain with the state, entering a guilty plea to a lesser charged Tuesday morning in the Darke County Common Pleas Court. Louk was charged and later indicted on one count of Felonious Assault (F2) after he reportedly struck a pedestrian acquaintance while behind the wheel of a motor vehicle on April 19. He entered a guilty plea to an amended charge of Attempted Felonious Assault (F3) during Tuesday’s change of plea hearing. He will be sentenced in February, where he faces up to three years behind bars. Louk has several prior felony convictions, including admitting to a rash of church break-ins in 2014.
