Great Darke County Fair presented 2018 Blue Ribbon Fair award BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – The Great Darke County Fair was selected by the United States Trotting Association (USTA) as the 2018 Blue Ribbon Fair with the award presented during the Thursday night of racing in front of the grandstands. Doug Ballinger, representing the USTA made the presentation to a large crowd of horse racing fans. “Every year they choose a fair for the United States Trotting Association Blue Ribbon Fair,” said Ballinger. “In Ohio there are 88 fairs that race. Darke County just goes above and beyond. It’s just horse country here.” Ballinger is in his 43rd year calling races at the Great Darke County Fair having started in 1975. Nationally known track announcer Roger Huston was calling the Thursday night races at the Great Darke County Fair. “Roger has called over 177,000

races,” noted Ballinger. “He called races at Greenville from 1960-1975 before going to the Meadows in Pennsylvania and has called all Little Brown Jugs for the past 51 years. He has worked at 140 different tracks.” With Jim Buchy as always, taking in the races at the local fair, Ballinger took time to give credit to Darke County’s No. 1 race fan. “Jim Buchy is the thoroughbred and harness … we appreciate Jim Buchy for everything that he did to pass these bills to get the gaming and that for the racing – Jim Buchy or we probably wouldn’t be here tonight – and that’s the truth.” “I’m proud of the award,” said Darke County fair board member and Race Superintendent Dick Delk. “It’s not just our harness racing program. They were here last year and talked to us, they look at the whole fair which it’s great for the harness people, but to have it for the whole fair – I think that is really a great thing.” “It says a lot for our county fair in

general – all of it,” added Delk. “I’m one we have, not just one thing. I’m very of those kinds of fair board members that proud that we received the award.” – our fair is great because of everything

Eikenberry’s IGA fair donation supports Shriners BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – Each year Eikenberry’s IGA teams up with the Great Darke County Fair harness racing program in support of the Greenville Shriners to raise funds for Dayton’s Children’s Hospital. “We do this to help the Shriners,” said Mark Davis. “Hopefully it helps them raise more money.” “The bucket kind of follows the donuts.” Thursday night was donut night at the track. The fundraiser was started several years ago to support the Darke County Shrine for the children’s hospital. Volunteers comb the grandstand

passing out the donuts while the Shriners pass the hat. Over the years several thousands of dollars have been raised. The funds raised are given to the Shrine for their hospital fund. “The bucket kind of follows the donuts,” Mark said. Mark and Gretchen (EikenberryDavis) donate 720 donuts for the prerace event. Gretchen’s grandfather, Myron Eikenberry and her father, Nils Eikenberry were both Shriners. The donuts donated by Eikenberry’s IGA takes early morning hours in the store’s bakery by loyal employees to get the fresh donuts ready. “720 donuts – we have to bring employees in two hours Gretchen Eikenberry-Davis and Mark Davis, owners of Eikenberry’s IGA make donation to Shriners at early to get it done,” noted Mark. Grange displays again at fair LINDA MOODY CORRESPONDENT lmoody@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – The theme for this year’s Grange Display at the Great Darke County Fair was about “Tickets to Better Living Through Grange.” The display was in three sections: Stelvideo Grange 295 with its subordinate/community grange booth; Stelvideo Grange Junior Youth and Young Adults and Deaf Activities booth; and the promotional booth, where someone was there to answer any questions from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Junior Grangers of Stelvideo Grange 295 handed out free tickets to fair-goers. “The juniors would take the big tickets, go out in the aisle to give them to people, and they would say, ‘Free tickets for the Grange’ repeatedly,” said Lynne Hinshaw, who with husband Harvey and daughter Susan Gunckle manned the booth with other Grangers throughout the week. New contest recipes are handed out every year; and passed out were free ear plugs for the tractor pulls, motorcycle races and demolition derby; candy; stickers; sign language and activity pages, and disposable pill packs. “We also provided a cool place to sit, rest and eat,” said Lynne, who noted that

the Ohio State Cookbooks were for sale. Stelvideo Grange 295 has 16 members: Three youth ages 14-25; five young adults ages 26-40; five ages 41 to 70; and three ages 70 plus. “We now have a young active Grange,” Lynne said. “Stelvideo Junior Grange 216 has two members.” Some of the Grange’s community service projects are giving to FISH Darke County at Thanksgiving ($150 plus canned food and paper products; providing more than 180 Christmas cards to local nursing homes, with members signing, addressing, writing notes, letters and mailing them; adopting a family at Christmas, this year giving $250 in gift cards; donating bottled drinks and packaged food to Hospice State of the Heart at Wayne HealthCare throughout the year; and donating more than 80 dictionaries to Arcanum third-graders, the 14th year for them doing so. For state community service projects, Stelvideo Grange donated to the Flying Horse Farms located in central Ohio; to Dogs for Better Lives, where Ohio State Grange has now sponsored two dogs; and to Make-A-Difference Day at the Ohio State Convention to Fairfield County Food Pantry. Stelvideo Grange was organized in

10-years of T-shirts

GREENVILLE – Summer lingers for the annual Great Darke County Fair. Farm chores, even back to school, are put on hold for nine glorious days in “Great Fair-yland.” The 10th annual Community Blood Center “T-Shirt Day” came midway through the fair on Aug. 22, a day with temperatures so unseasonably mild it suggested even the Fair will soon give way to fall. Donors made sure to wear their favorite CBC t-shirt on “T-Shirt Day” so they could stop by the CBC tent and register for door prizes. The grand prize of a “Family Fun Pack” of four tickets to Kings Island went to Kris Shelley from Greenville. CBC Darke County Account Representative Dana Puterbaugh set the goal of 300 donors visiting the tent wearing CBC t-shirts and came close with a head count of 250 donors. Greenville was again the best-represented town with 100 donors, followed by Arcanum with 24 and Versailles with 22. It wouldn’t be T-Shirt Day without a visit by Ivan Patterson wearing his vintage “1st Apheresis LifeLeader Event June 28, 1992” t-shirt. “It’s my favorite t-shirt,” said Ivan, and he has plenty. The retired founder of Korrect Plumbing is a CBC pioneer platelet and plasma donor. He made his milestone 500th lifetime donation in January and turned 91 in February.

Ivan now has 511 lifetime donations, and is still collecting t-shirts. New Madison donor Jack Wyne wore the “Iron Donor” t-shirt, but he couldn’t name his favorite. “That’s a good question, I just grab one,” he said. Jack’s wife Mary knew her favorite: “The one that says ‘Believe.’” Jim and Carol Holsapple from Arcanum wore their favorites: “American Spirit” for Carol and “Buckeye Blood Donor” for Jim. Asked what makes “the Great Darke County Fair” so great, Jim said, “The size of it,” and Carol added, “The animals and all the children involved.” Donor Garry Jenkinson from Greenville named his favorite t-shirt as, “Kiss me, I’m Irish from St. Patrick’s Day. I’m Irish, and I’m a blood donor.” As to what makes the fair great, his son Evan, with his face painted like a puppy dog and an icy snow cone in hand said, “The snow cones and the dipping dots.” Bill Fraley and his son Caleb had rabbits to sell and ice to find, but stopped by the CBC tent with Bill wearing the “Stars and Stripes” t-shirt from this summer. Bill’s favorite t-shirts are “anything to do with the military.” Caleb was quick to say “the food” makes the fair great. His dad Bill summed it up best: “I get to see everybody and talk to everybody and have a great time.” Learn more at www.GivingBlood.org.

Veterans thanked for preserving our freedom BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – The United States was founded for one reason – freedom, former Ohio House Rep. Jim Buchy told those gathered for the 2018 Darke County Fair Veteran’s Memorial Service on Wednesday. Veterans and their families filed into the grandstands to celebrate the service and sacrifice of those who have and are serving our country. Buchy shared some statistics during his presentation. “Forty million men and women have worn the uniform of the United States military,” he said, noting that eight million of those serving had been wounded and 1.5 million “paid the supreme sacrifice” so citizens could enjoy their freedoms. The fair’s Veterans Memorial Service, Buchy said, provides a way to “celebrate veterans today and those in the future and especially those from Darke County. Freedom is not free and certainly

not guaranteed. We must fight to keep it.” Also speaking Wednesday was Chip Tansill, a U.S. Army veteran and current director of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services. “It’s a great day to be an American,” said Tansill, sharing how his grandfather, a World War II veteran, was his inspiration for his own military service. Tansill, who was appointed to the state’s veterans services organization by Gov. John Kasich in September 2015, acknowledged the support and sacrifices made by the spouses and families of Ohio’s veterans, noting there are currently 800,000 veterans in the state. Tansill also took a few minutes to give a special thank you to those who served during the Vietnam War. Vietnam vets, he said “are a special group who did not get welcomed home” properly. “In the last two decades we’ve tried to make up for that. If it wasn’t for the Vietnam vets, all the people who have served after that would have not been appreciated. Every

School Navy Junior ROTC, and the Darke County Veterans Services. The invocation and benediction was offered by Pastor Joseph Hanna. Mandy Rismiller performed the National Anthem and Elaine Harter led the Pledge of Allegiance. Angie Rauh and Cristy Moody presented Taps.

Christian, Hardin carry on family tradition BY LINDA MOODY CORRESPONDENT lmoody@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – An age-old tradition carried on at the Great Darke County Fair this year, even though exhibitor Francis Byers died in February. His daughter, Donna Christian, with the help of her daughter, Kelly Christian Hardin, entered produce and grain from Byers’ property in fair competition and walked away with five rosettes. “We did this on our own,” said Donna. “This would have been his 78th year. He started when he was 18.” She said they won in everything they entered, including best table and watermelon. Christian herself has been entering the contest for 60 years, starting when she was 10 years of age. “Dad taught me how to show,” she said. “We went the state fair at least 20 or 25 years, taking two half-ton gravel trucks, pickup trucks and cars filled with vegetables and fruits.” Christian, who has worked at Walmart, in a bridal shop in Dayton and also did some landscaping,

is the mother of three children, Tracy, Tim and Kelly. She also has four grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. “Definitely, Dad would be proud (of their accomplishments this year),” Donna said. “It was awesome for Grandpa,” Kelly replied. “We are carrying on his legacy.” Kelly said it was she who grew all of the produce for this year’s competition on her grandfather’s property. “I have never grown one thing in my whole life,” said Kelly, who works at a bank. “It was another proud honor for me to do that for him. It was a lot of work and also a lot of hours. Grandpa gave me good genes. He’d definitely be proud. It’s funny because Grandpa looked forward to the number of rosettes. We got five.” Byers started competing in the agriculture/horticulture section of the Great Darke County Fair in 1939. He was awarded many firstplace ribbons and rosettes for his vegetables, fruit, and grain entries. He was chosen twice to be grand marshal of the fair. It was noted that in 2017, he

reached a goal of 77 consecutive years of competition...an accomplishment of which his family was proud. He also competed at the Ohio State Fair for 40 consecutive years from 197493, bringing home numerous awards from there as well. In 1993, he won all eight banners given. In 1994, he was inducted into the Ohio State Agriculture Hall of Fame by Gov. George Voinivich and also received a Directors Award for Innovation and Excellence. At 90,

they honored him with a Certificate of Recognition for Dedicated Service as a vendor at the Downtown Greenville Farmers Market. In 2015, he was recognized for his dedication to agriculture by receiving the following awards: Outstanding Fair Supporter from the Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Achievement Award from Darke County, and Outstanding Achievement Recognition from both the 131st General Assembly of the House of Representatives.

It’s business as usual at Danny’s concession stand at the Great Darke County Fair. Owner Danny Saintignon decided to return to this year’s fair after he was not here last year. (Linda Moody photo)

Danny’s Place returns to fair BY LINDA MOODY CORRESPONDENT lmoody@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – After a one-year absence, Danny’s returned to the Great Darke County Fair, complete with its burritos, nachos, walking tacos, made wrongs and other delectables. Yes, owner Danny Saintignon brought back his concession stand after last year’s hiatus, and it was business as usual. Danny’s first started coming to the county fair in 1999, and, because there was a lack of help last year, he opted to keep his bar on South Broadway in Greenville open instead fair week. “I opened Danny’s Place around 1983,” he said. “My son, Kevin, ran the bar for eight years and he was going to put the bar up for sale. I owned the real estate so I asked him what he wanted for the bar business and he told me, so I said I would just buy it back. I ran it for approximately a year then I sold the bar business and real estate to Larry Baker on Jan. 16 this year. After I sold the bar, I had time to come back (to the fair). What’ll happen now, I don’t know, but it’s been great to see all our friends and to have them say how they missed us. We’d like to keep the fair trailer open another 20 years, but we just get too tired anymore. Next year is a long way off. We’ll see what happens. Maybe we can find someone to take it over and have a good stand. If I sell

the fair stand, Larry Baker will get first option to buy since he bought the bar/restaurant.” Saintignon said he got some good help this year. “We have a lot of good friends,” he said. “Our kids and grandkids help a lot.” Daughter Jenny Winterrowd, son Brian, and son Kevin and his son Ryan have helped him a lot as did son-in-law Damon Winterrowd and son Dalton, who assisted in helping set up the concession stand for the fair. “It took a good week to get ready for this, getting everything and the trailer set up,” Saintignon said. “Our stand is a lot like a kitchen, where some of the other concessions are pretty simple operations.” Also helping out fair week is his wife, Mary, and sister-in-law, Susan Fowble. Saintignon grew up in Union City, Ohio. Before buying Carl’s Bar and naming it Danny’s Place, he first owned the Whistle Stop in Ansonia and then purchased Apartment C in Fort Recovery and changed its name to St. New’s. He was also in partnership with Steve Brooks and they bought Gallagher’s Bar/Restaurant in the 400 block of South Broadway, Greenville. Where does Saintignon go at the fair when he wants something to eat? “Wampler’s Italian sausage stand,” he replied.

All proceeds go to the Darke County Veterans Services for the 2018 local veterans Washington D.C. trip. “It is very important to us because if it wouldn’t be for those Veterans and all the time they served ‌ that’s why we live in the Land of the Free,â€? said Fitzwater owner Dave Furlong. “We owe everything we have to them. We would be a lot different country if it wasn’t for them.â€? The 2018 Washington D.C. Trip is scheduled for September 27-30 for honorably discharged Darke County

One of eight hooks makes it down the track before heavy rains shut down the NTPA pull at The Great Darke County Fair. (Gaylen Blosser photos)

NTPA Tractor & Truck Pull battles rain BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – The Great Darke County Fair and the Darke County Tractor Pullers Association (DCTPA) hosted the 38th Annual National Tractor Pullers Association (NTPA) Grand National Truck and Tractor Pull on Tuesday night. “As we sit and look at the rain possibilities on the horizon, I’m reminded of one thing, it is what it is but what it will become is what you make of it,” said Indiana’s NTPA national event announcer Alan Washburn during the afternoon rain. “Let’s pull tonight.” Heavy rains swept through the area cancelling the morning and afternoon antique tractor pull. The DCTPA got the track in pulling shape, peeling the top layer of mud off the track in preparation for the evening’s NTPA event only to have heavy rains once again drench the track. The second downpour brought a ninety-minute delay to the start of the event as the DCTPA worked feverishly peeling a second thick layer of mud off the track. “They built the track to get started, then we had rain at 6:30 and they had

to peel it off and rebuild it again,” said Duane Edwards. “Our guys that build the tracks and the rest of our members – everybody pitches in and works their tails off.” With the track once again in pulling condition, eight hooks greeted pulling fans only to have heavy rains return bringing an early close to the night’s featured events. “When you play in Mother Nature’s dirt pile, you play when Mother Nature wants you too,” said Edwards. Edwards, a Tractor Pulling Hall of Famer and trackside voice of the DCTPA was quick to give credit to the many that helped in an attempt to get the pull in. “George Clifton has saved us several times with his large equipment,” said Edwards. “You have the Schlechty boys pitching in, the Singers – it was something to see the boys pitch in. They worked so hard out there on that track.” “They (pullers) know even when we don’t have rain, when they come in her to pull, they know they are going to get a good meal,” Edwards noted. “If they need anything, all they have to do is see someone in a red shirt and the DCTPA is there to help.

Winners of the county fair’s Freaky Vegetable decorating contest are Alivia Addis, Gabe McGlinch and Evan Addis.

Freaky veggies transformed into works of art at county fair BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – What were once deemed as “freaky vegetablesâ€? became works of art during Saturday’s Decorating a Freak Vegetable Contest. Three youth participants entered the contest along with their freaky banana pepper, tomato and carrots, held in the Youth Building. Using a variety of craft materials, contestants were given 30 minutes to decorate vegetables they picked from their own gardens. Winning a ďŹ rst place blue ribbon was Alivia Addis, 11, of Greenville. Alivia’s freaky banana pepper’s shape reminded her of a snake. She also said she knew before the competition even began that she was going to decorate it a Slithering Snake. “I thought ‘a snake is always

slithering,’â€? she explained. Last year, Alivia said, she also participated in the Freaky Vegetable Contest, turning a tomato into a mermaid. Earning the second place ribbon was Gabe McGlinch, 8, of Versailles for his Tomato Monster. “My mom has a tomato plant,â€? Gabe said when asked if he grew the tomato. “And it had bunches of freaky tomatoes.â€? Third place went to Evan Addis, 9, of Greenville, for his Farmer Carrot. According to Evan’s mom, Amy, he was out in the garden the past couple weeks looking for some freaky carrots, ďŹ nally settling on two which were fused together at the top. Serving as judge for the decorating contest was retired Ansonia reading specialist Marty Schlechty, who said the main thing she looked for was the decorators’ “creativity,â€? adding “his is hard,â€? before awarding the ribbons.

Kent Saunders walks his horse prior to race at the Great Darke County Fair. (Gaylen Blosser photo)

Kent Saunder – detective, race horse owner and basketball referee BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – Kent Saunders, a detective with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office was at the Great Darke County Fair as owner of racing horses but is better known in Darke County as a high school varsity basketball official. The high school and college basketball referee is a Xenia Buccaneers alum where he played football and baseball. “I was a running back and a defensive end,” said Saunders. “I played baseball but football was my favorite sport. I always wanted to play basketball but I was never tall enough so my cousin got me into little kid’s basketball as a sophomore in high school and I have been refereeing ever since. After the first year I decided I wanted to start doing junior high ball and I kind of climbed the ladder fairly quickly and by the time I was a sophomore in college I was doing high school varsity games.” Saunders gives credit to his grandparents for his love of horse racing. “My grandparents always enjoyed watching horse racing when I was a kid,” Saunders noted. “I was kind of spoiled by them so where ever they went I always would go, so I fell in love with horse racing as a kid.” “I became good friends with Jack Franklin who was stabled in Xenia and Chip Noble and his family. I never really got into the actual owning, training horses until my later years. I bought my first two horses about 12 years ago.” “I partnered with Jack Franklin and then Jack ended up moving to New Jersey

and I started doing the horses myself,” continued Saunders. “One of my old teachers, Jim Davis ended up helping me at that time and then I eventually became efficient myself and I started training them myself.” Driving in the horse races has not been in the cards for the horse owner at this point in his career. “I have my fair driving license, however they go way too fast for me to want to drive in a race so I’ve never driven in an actual race or in a qualifier,” Saunders stated. “I think I will try it at least once or twice, but right now I just have my trainer’s driver’s license.” “I also enjoy coming up to Darke County because I’m good friends with Thomas Hope and his family,” added Saunders. “Tom has helped me out over the years as well and taught me quite a bit. This is where they stable at. I love coming to Greenville.” Saunders encourages young people to get involved with junior high and high school officiating. “It’s a great,” Saunders said of officiating. “I always looked at it that I was making a little bit of money to stay in shape and its great exercise of course over the years.” “I’m about to start my 36th year and the running now is a lot more than it used to be,” Saunders said. “Every year they seem to get younger and faster and I seem to get older and slower, but I am hoping that I can still get up and down the court for at least another three or four years and continue officiating. I would like to be able to officiate 40 years – that’s my goal.”

Radio’s Ward wins Celebrity Harness Race BY LINDA MOODY CORRESPONDENT lmoody@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – Scott Ward of WTGR radio fame in Greenville, won the Celebrity Race during the Gene Riegle Memorial Open Harness Horse Race Thursday night of the Great Darke County Fair. Assisting him was driver Craig Bowman. Coming in second was long-time newsman Steve Baker of WHIO-TV, assisted by driver Kent Wilcox; while third went to Pacey “The Wizard” Midlin, track handicapper of the Miami Valley, who was assisted by driver Chris Hope; and fourth went to Dean Hoffman of Columbus, a member of the Harness Hall of Fame for commentators, assisted by driver Emily Hay. After the race, Ward made it to the winner’s circle, where he received a trophy and had his picture taken. He won first place with Money Bucks. Clinton Randall, correspondent for the Early Bird, was also scheduled to race but decided not to go after he got on the grounds dressed in silks and carrying a helmet. “I was already feeling a little nervous

and anxious before even getting to the fairgrounds,” Randall said. “When I saw the horse that I was going to ride with was very temperamental and learning my driver had never even driven in a race before and was just as nervous as I was, it didn’t give me much confidence in a safe return from the track.” Randall went on, “I have been promised a chance to redeem myself and compete in next year’s celebrity race...only this time with a driver with at least one race under his/her belt. Congrats to Scott Ward on the photofinish win and my friend Steve Baker for a close second place. I just wanted to go on record that I did not chicken out and will show no mercy next year when I take first place!” “I was honored to be asked to be a part of the race,” said Ward. “I was excited, but as the race got closer, I got a little nervous. But once I was in the sulky, those nerves were gone. One the race started, it was quite thrilling.” Baker had this to say: “We went out five laps before for warmup and I felt confident. It was spooky going there as fast, and I hung on for dear life. All three of us were nose-to-nose. It was exciting, scary, thrilling and an honor

WHIO-TV’s Steve Baker finished a close second in the Celebrity Harness Race at the Darke County Fair. (Gaylen Blosser photo)

to be invited to participate. Thank you Kent and Mrs. Wilcox and the horsemen at barn #3!” This was the first time for Baker to compete in such a race, but noted he does watch the harness horse races “a little bit.” “It was a good crowd,” said Tim

Harless, the race manager for the past several years. “They (the celebrities) did two laps - a mile - and three of them were in a photo finish. According to Harless, this is the first celebrity race since a few years back. “We are sure to do it again next year.”

BY GAYLEN BLOSSER SPORTS WRITER gblosser@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – A record breaking 217 cars surpassed the 2017 record setting 177 cars entered the fair’s demolition derby bringing the curtain down on the 2018 Great Darke County fair to a sold out grand stand and infield seating. “We had a record turnout,” said Dave Niley; Darke Country Fair Board Director. “I thought it was a really good show of demo cars – a really wonderful show.” Prior to the main events, 50 power

wheels took to the track in front of the grandstand for a kid’s demolition derby. “The kid’s power wheels is really popular,” Niley noted. “Everybody likes to watch the kids.” After a week that saw several days of rain washing out events, Niley was pleased with the good weather and large crowd to close out the 2018 Great Darke County Fair. “Good to end on a high note,” said Niley. “Everybody enjoys a derby and we are always glad to have them. It was a great night and a super derby.”

I put both of those images together on an 8×10 and the owners and trainers buy them.” “Brad is a great guy,” said fair board member and speed superintendent Richard Delk. “He’s one of those kind of guys that you have that help you out if you need it on other things and he’s just a great guy.” “This is my 13th year running this program and he was here before that,” Delk added. “He’s been with me all 13 of those years.”

Conrad can be found each year covering 29 Ohio county fairs while continuing a family business his father has worked at for many years. “I just grew up in it and took it over,” Conrad noted. “This is all I have really ever done. The family has been involved in all kinds of photography. We had a full service professional photo lab, my mom and dad both did wedding photography and portraits. Now we have just kind of gotten into the horse racing photography and that’s what I do it now.” Conrad, a Canal Winchester High School graduate is well known throughout the horse racing circuit. The ever polite and soft spoken photographer receives high marks from retired State Representative and Greenville native, Jim Buchy. “Brad’s father has been a photographer for years and years and years and that’s how he learned the trade,” Buchy stated. “He works the fair circuit in the summer and he also is in Scioto Downs and the other raceways.” “He knows everything about the

sport, he is a big supporter of the sport, he is one of the reasons that we are growing particularly in the fair circuit.” added Buchy. “He’s an expert.” “I am a friend of his,” Conrad said fondly of Buchy. “He has done a great deal. Horse racing was really on the decline for a while and it took a lot of effort in the legislature. Jim Buchy has always been at the forefront lobbing for as much as he can to get the horse racing and to get the legislature and the laws and such changed to help horse racing.” “I’ve known Jim for a lot of years and he is a great man,” continued Conrad. “He’s always out here at the track. He always remembers my name and says hello to me, no matter where I see him. I see him lots of other places and he always makes it a point to say hello. He knows everybody – he’s great.” Conrad looks forward each year to attending the Great Darke County Fair; not only to shoot photos, but to enjoy the fair food. “I enjoy the Great Darke County Fair very much – it’s always my

favorite fair of the year,” said Conrad. “I got here early today and all I’ve done is eat. I love the selection. Everything you try is good – I would say its tops.” “That makes him keep coming back – because we have the best fair food,” Delk said with a chuckle.
