US 127 and Kruckeberg intersection change a $2.2 mil project Completion date slated for Dec. 1, 2019

GREENVILLE — Construction at the intersection of U.S. 127 and Kruckeberg Road is due to begin on Monday at the cost of $2,262,309.00 for a Partial Restricted Crossing U-turn (Partial RCUT) Intersection design. The project is under the jurisdiction of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) with a completion date of Dec. 1. The project was awarded to Brumbaugh Construction Inc., the lone bidder, in May. According to ODOT District Traffic Planning Engineer Mary E. Hoy, safety funding, which includes both state and federal safety funds, will cover up to the capped amount, which for this project is $1,386,440. ODOT District 7 preservation allocation funds will be used to cover all remaining costs. What to do with the U.S. 127 and Kruckeberg Road intersection has been debat-

nated in the state of Michigan, explaining the design ed for several years. Between is meant to curtail points of contact. Currently, there are 2011 and 2015, there were 32 potential conflict points two fatalities and 45 accidents at the intersection. A fatality that took the life of a teen driver in August 2016 prompted a petition leading to an ODOT safety study. In January 2017, ODOT held a well-attended public meeting to gather input from residents and discuss options to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities at the intersection. Options included closing the intersection to upgrading the U.S. 127 and St. Rt. 121 interchange. Traffic studies were also conducted before officials announced the ParCourtesy photo Pictured is the Partial Restricted tial RCUT design in June Crossing U-turn (Partial RCUT) 2017. A driver heading north will still be able to turn west onto Kruckeberg Road to gain access to S.R. 121 or Russ Road. A driver heading south on U.S. 127 will still be able to turn east onto Kruckeberg Road towards Jaysville-St. Johns Road. The only difference, when the project is complete, is for drivers traveling on Kruckeberg Road (regardless of which direction) when approaching U.S. 127. The only option for a Kruckeberg Road driver will be to turn right. They will not be able to turn left onto or cross over U.S. 127. If the assessment were to take place today, the rate would be 5.5 percent in addition to the three percent the county auditor charges. vehicle and started to walk inside the store. The officer exited the police cruiser and approached the male subject, confirming it was Grisez with his Social Security number. Through LEADS/ NCIC, Grisez’s warrant was confirmed for failure to comply with a court order with the original charge of physical control. The warrant had no bond and stipulated Grisez had to serve three days. Grisez was arrested and transported to the Darke County Jail. On July 7 an officer was called to a residence in the 500 block of Bur Oak Drive on the report of a wanted person being in the home. An family member of defendant Mariah Green had contacted Greenville Police Department to report Green was at the residence. Green had an active warrant for failure to appear at a bond hearing on an original charge of criminal trespass. She said the warrant had not been completed when she spoke with Boseke. The police officer and the probation officer went to Fram where Boseke is an employee. Officers made contact with plant supervisors to make them aware of the situation. Boseke was escorted to the entrance, where the probation violation warrant was completed and forwarded to

the DCSO jail. Boseke was placed under arrest and was transported to county jail, where he was incarcerated and held on no bond. Trespassing On July 6 an officer was called to Walmart on the report of Timothy Brown being in the store after he had been warned for trespass earlier in the day. When the officer arrived on the scene he saw another police officer escorting Brown out of the store. The officers searched Brown for weapons, but none were found. Brown began to say how people were out to kill him and run him over including Greenville Police Department.. Earlier in the day on June 6, officers were dispatched to Walmart in reference to Brown walking around the store talking about death and satellites. When employees requested Brown leave, he refused for a time. When he eventually left the store, he was warned for trespass by a Greenville police officer. During the second incident of the day,

Greenville Township Rescue was called to the scene when Brown requested to go to Wayne HealthCare due to a problem with his medications. Brown voluntarily went with rescue to be transported to the hospital. An officer also went to Wayne HealthCare and advised Brown he was being cited for criminal trespass due to an officer giving him a warning earlier in the day for trespass. Summer Crisis Program begins GREENVILLE – The Ohio Development Services Agency and Miami Valley Community Action Partnership will help incomeeligible Ohioans stay cool during the hot summer months. The Home Energy Assistance Summer Crisis Program provides eligible Ohioans assistance paying an electric bill or assistance paying for central air conditioning repairs. The program runs through Aug. 31. To apply for the program, customers are required to schedule an appointment with Miami Valley Community Action Partnership. Appointments can be scheduled for all counties— Darke, Preble, Greene, and Montgomery—by calling the appointment line at 937-514-4777 or by going online to miamivalleycap. org. Appointments are released every evening at 4:30 p.m., with an additional 500 appointments released each Friday at 4:30 p.m. Customers need to bring copies of the following documents to their appointment: * Copies of their most recent energy bills * A list of all household members and proof of income for the last 30 days or 12 months for each member * Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency for all household members * Proof of disability (if applicable) * Physician documentation that cooling assistance is needed for a household member’s health (if there isn’t a household member over the age of 60). Last year more than 423 families in four counties were assisted through the Home Energy Assistance Summer Crisis Program. Households were either provided a one-time mone-

tary benefit (up to $300) or a window A/C unit, permitting Miami Valley CAP to spend out over $63,000 to help beat the summer heat. “We are looking forward to another great Summer Crisis Program in 2019. It is our goal to spend out over $80,000 assisting clients. If you are in need of assistance with cooling costs and meet the criteria listed above, please schedule an appointment so we can keep you cooler during these warm summer months,” said Keelie Gustin, director of Energy Assistance Programs at Miami Valley CAP. The Summer Crisis Program assists low-income households with an older household member (60 years or older), or households that can provide physician documentation that cooling assistance is needed for a household member’s health. Conditions can include lung disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or asthma. Ohioans enrolled in the Percentage of Income Payment Plan Plus Program (PIPP Plus) are not eligible for bill payment assistance through the program but are encouraged to work with Miami Valley CAP to identify other opportunities for assistance. For more information about the features of the Summer Crisis Program, contact Keelie Gustin, Director of Energy Assistance Programs, at 937341-5000, extension 157 or at keelie@mvcap.com. For more information about energy assistance programs call (800)2820880, Monday through Friday (hearing impaired customers may dial 711 for assistance) and for a list of energy assistance providers select option 2, or visit www.energyhelp.ohio.gov.

ready for the paper – yes, I’m busy. I don’t usually get that detailed with my explanation and opt for either “yes” or “uh huh.” To be honest, I’m not sure why she asks because it isn’t going to stop her from talking. Five minutes into the conversation I usually remind her that I said I was busy. Yeah, that usually goes about as well as you might think. Don’t get me wrong, I love my wife and I love talking to her. It’s those conversations where she is telling me how much money we don’t have that I don’t enjoy. With a kid in college and another one heading into her senior year of high school, we have that conversation a lot. While we were sitting alone in our separate chairs for those few days, I daydreamed about our future empty nest years. I started thinking about the money I wouldn’t have to spend on our kids. My lips started to form a smile when I thought about the toys

we could have if I wasn’t putting gas in their cars, paying for car repairs and insurance, funding camps, helping pay college tuition, feeding more than two people, and shouldering the cost of cell phones, to name a few expenses. My mind was racing as fast as the his and her jet skis my wife and I were riding in my daydream. We were smiling, laughing and truly enjoying our time together. Suddenly, the clouds rolled in, the skies darkened and the thunder began to roll. I looked to the left and on the shore were two redheaded young ladies with two, maybe three ankle-biters hanging onto their legs. I tried to ignore their arms waving frantically, but my wife saw them. She knew it was our daughters and headed for shore. I tried to stop her, but she wouldn’t listen. As we approached, I could hear my wife agreeing to their demands, “Can you watch your grandkids while we ride the jet skis?” I hate when daydreams turn into probable reality.

They put two runways that are raised, that are on boards and then pole vault right along the water.”

Hunt is catching the attention of many major Division I university’s track and field teams from across the nation, giving the incoming Lady Wave senior even more on her plate to juggle along with vaulting. “It is very interesting,” Hunt said of the college recruiting process. “I am just super thankful for the opportunity to have the colleges coming and just being interested, so it is definitely – I wouldn’t say it’s stressful but it can be at times. Fire department welcomes four new members ARCANUM — A report from Arcanum Fire Chief Kurt Troutwine topped the council meeting Tuesday evening. According to Troutwine, the fire department has made 86 runs for the first half of the year, slightly above the year average with the majority on Tuesdays, and the average response time at nine minutes. The latter is from the call made into 911 and arriving at the location. “A lot of times we’ve been a lot less than that,” explained Troutwine with a lot of non-emergency runs such as assisting EMS, wires down and trees down, extending the time to the scene. “I don’t think that is bad with us responding from our homes to the firehouse and getting in the vehicle and then going to the scene.” When asked by Arcanum Village Administrator Bill Kessler if the recent bridge construction on the north and east side of the village had any effect on the response time, Troutwine responded no calls came from the east, but it may have affected a few to the north. “It really didn’t work out that bad,” said Troutwine who also shared the fire department welcomed four new members with two applications pending. During public commentary, Dave Kessler provided an update on a recent meeting with Michael R. Hurwitz from Columbus who serves as a technical theatre restoration consultant. Hurtwitz met with Dave

Kessler and other interested individuals at the former village hall to discuss potential opportunities for the building on Monday. According to Dave Kessler, Hurwitz “opened their eyes for another route,” and said, “Whoever takes this on, has to take it on wholeheartedly.” Dave Kessler requested access to the building for another meeting slated for Thursday, July 18. Updates from Arcanum Village Mayor Greg Baumle included work on the horse parade which is scheduled for Dec. 14, and a reminder of the groundbreaking for the new village administration building at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16 at 309 Albright St. The mayor also provided an update on the search for a new police chief, which is still a work in progress with potential interviews in two to three weeks. Along with news on Little University LLC, a preschool center and afterschool care, currently in the process of renovating the former school building at 110 E. South St. Councilmember Tim Philpot Sr. reminded the board and those in attendance the public meeting on sidewalk assessments will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 15 at 1 Pop Rite Drive. Council meetings are held at 7 p.m. every second and fourth Tuesday at the All American Clothing Company, 1 Pop Rite Drive. The public is encouraged to attend. Reach reporter Bethany J. Krista. Most generally in a wheelchair, Krista said she had walked at one time for a little while with braces on her legs. “I wanted to walk but my bones wouldn’t let me,” she said. “I had multiple surgeries on my left leg.” She indicated she had hydrocephalus along with her spina bifida. Hydrocephalus is the buildup of fluid in the cavities (ventricles) deep within the brain. The excess fluid increases the size of the ventricles and puts pressure on the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid normally flows through the ventricles and bathes the brain and spinal column. “They don’t know if spina bifida is hereditary,” said Krista, who is also the granddaughter of Kay Trittschuh. “My mom later had my two brothers, Michael and Timothy, who have not been affected by it.” Krista said she always wanted to play volleyball. “I couldn’t but they let me keep score and do the scoreboard,” said Krista, who had been on a mixed bowling league for two

years. Krista said her own mother knew she had spina bifida while carrying her during pregnancy. “I’m glad Mom had me,” she said. “I try to be independent as much as I can.” She said it was her mother who recommended Dr. Lachiewizc as it was her doctor, too. Krista met husband Kurt Halley of Greenville in 2010 at the bowling alley in Versailles, where he worked at the front desk of the bar. They were married Sept. 24, 2006. Kurt, the son of Karl and Peggy (Miles) Halley of Greenville, has worked in the office of GTI as a mechanical engineer in the purchasing department for the past four years. Krista said she knew the gender of her baby before the birth. “I couldn’t go without knowing,” she said. “I had a suspicion it was a girl, but it didn’t matter to Kurt.” She admits there was a lot of anxiety with this pregnancy. “I think I worried because of the fear of surgery,” she said. “I was in

Ansonia seeking mayoral candidates ANSONIA — Since Rick Lee stepped down as mayor of Ansonia several months ago, there is a need for a new one at election time. In the meantime, President Pro-Tem John Middleton agreed to take over until a successor is found, and was sworn in at a spring meeting of council. “Rick resigned because there was something he wanted to do,” said Middleton. “He has about four or

five months to go on his term. I was approached to serve as mayor and accepted, but I’m not going to run. I still have two years on my council seat.” Serving as president protem now is Mike Hackler. In contacting Lee, his wife Denise responded, that her husband “doesn’t like the limelight.” “He wanted to get back into the fire department, and the Ohio Revised Code says you can’t do both,” she said. “He is doing the fire department training and helping Paul (McCleskey, the fire chief since early 2019). Rick talked

it over with the council and John agreed to take over as mayor.” A spokesperson at the Darke County Board of Elections said those interested in running for mayor in Ansonia have until 4 p.m. Aug. 7. “Petition packets are available at the board office,” said the spokesperson. “A person needs 10 valid signatures of registered voters living in Ansonia. There is a $30 filing fee when you file.” For those wishing to pick up a picket may go to the Board of Elections at 300 Garst Ave. in Greenville.

“A mayoral candidate, must have resided in the village for one year immediately preceding the general election,” she said. “He or she must be 18 as of the day of the election.” The mayoral position is non-partisan, she explained, as villages under 2,000 population are non-partisan. The mayor’s term is up at on the last day of the year, Dec. 31. Contact Darke County Media Staff Writer Linda Moody at lmoody@ aimmediamidwest.com or 937569-4315, ext. 1749. GREENVILLE – Cincinnati artist Donna Talerico who celebrates the shapes and patterns of color and light in her work will display her vibrant paintings alongside fascinating art books created by Judith Serling-Sturm at the next “Art at the Mill” exhibit which opens in the Clark Gallery on Friday, July 26 and continues through Sunday, Aug. 25. An opening night reception offering finger food and drinks from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. will feature the artists briefly sharing information about their work, methods and inspiration at 7 p.m. “Art at the Mill,” curated by Jan Roestamadji and Julie Clark, is free and open to the public. “Both of these women are wonderful and interesting artists,” Ms. Clark said, pointing out that Judith SerlingStrum’s work is about much more than making pretty books, and often offers thoughtprovoking insight into current and historical events and the preservation of the natural world. Ms. Roestamadji adds that although the artists were paired in this exhibit simply because both come from Cincinnati, the evocative

paintings of Donna Talerico are delightfully complemented by the unique and diverse artist books created by Ms. Serling-Strum, making for an exciting collaboration that should inspire viewers to enhance their own homes with a purchase from this exhibit. In the work of Judith Serling-Sturm, binding techniques, book structure, materials and content are equal players in the communication of an idea. Among the works to be exhibited at the Mill are handmade blank books with a myriad of exposed binding techniques, as well as several naturebased artist books. “’Earth’s Beauty,’ without text, glorifies the gifts of the earth using materials dug from its core, grown from its richness, and created from its bounty, while ‘Vanishing Rainforest’ is a visual warning about what is happening to our planet,” the artist explains. Papers handmade from native plants and mounted on a fallen tree branch are used in “Woodland Wanderings, which also contains “gifts dropped to the ground by mother nature and by humans.” After spending 20 years working in black and white as a fashion illustrator, Donna Talerico’s life as an artist turned to color in 1998 after attending an inspirational workshop in France. Bold color and gestural brush strokes inhabit her paintings, as she explores the borderland between representational and abstraction. Her abstract and figurative art portrays streetscapes, landscapes, and more, much of it inspired by her love of France inspired by the remembrances of her maternal grandmother, who had emigrated from Luxembourg as a World War I war bride. The fluid style employed by the artist infuses her work with energy, infusing all her scenes with life, creating dynamic and joyous images that transport the viewer to the observed site. The colorful paintings on rusting

sheets of metal created by nationally recognized artist Mike Elsass, along with imaginative steel sculptures created by Loveland resident Leslie Lehr Daly remain on view in the Clark Gallery through Sunday, July 21. Owned and operated by Friends of Bear’s Mill, the historic mill is located at 6450 ArcanumBear’s Mill Road about 5 miles east of Greenville. “Art at the Mill” is funded in part by a grant from Darke County Endowment for the Arts, and can be viewed during regular Mill store hours. Current hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, contact Bear’s Mill at 937-548-5112 or www.bearsmill.org.
