Matt Maher performed during the 2018 Illumination Festival. Jeremy Camp returns to Darke County to headline this year’s event.
Illumination hits 13th year GREENVILLE – The 13th annual Illumination Festival: Light in the Darke will be held Sept. 21 at the Darke County Fairgrounds. This year’s headliner is Jeremy Camp and he will be joined by I Am They, Micah Tyler, 321 Improv, Dan Bremnes and Elle Limebear for an evening of uplifting contemporary Christian music. Gates for the main concert open at 4 p.m. and the concert begins at 5 p.m. in front of the Grandstand. In addition to the main concert, the Illumination Festival also features a lot of fun activities throughout the afternoon. Midway activities and food truck open at noon and the great music from regional artists can be heard from the Coffee House stage. Some of this year’s midway activities include inflatables, high ropes course, rock wall, and laser tag. There is a small fee to enjoy some of the midway activities. Marty McCabe, president of the Illumination Festival committee, explained how this event got started 13 years ago, “Connie (Marty’s wife) and I used to do smaller events. We used coffee house events in Fort Jefferson and we had concerts at other churches, Memorial Hall to a certain size. It seemed like we were ready to grow and do something bigger.” McCabe credited Pat Harless for being by his side during those early days and Harless continued his influence when Illumination began. After discussing the idea with Daryl Riffle, who was the fair manager at the time, they decided to
move forward and a committee was formed. Is the event where McCabe would like it to be? Some aspects of the event are where he was hoping it would be, such as the activities in the afternoon for the kids. Other aspects have gone beyond his expectations. “I remember going to other festivals and thinking, wouldn’t it be neat to get so and so here. Mercy Me headlined, Crowder headlined different festivals. I always thought if we could get those artists here that would be a dream come true. So, I guess we met or exceeded that goal.” The Illumination Festival is also the kick-off for the annual Feed Darke County food drive presented by Fish Choice Pantry. Representatives from Fish Choice Pantry will be at the main gate accepting donations of non-perishable food items. Illumination Festival does not charge for parking, but does ask for visitors to bring in food items for Fish to help fill the shelves of the food pantry. Tickets for the main concert are $30 for grandstand (general admission) seating, $35 for access to the track, $35 for reserved (box seats), $40 track seats and $55 for VIP seats in front of the stage. Ticket prices will increase $5 on the day of the show. All tickets are available through itickets. com or through illuminationfestival.org. Bread of Life in Greenville, Darke County Fairgrounds and the Christian Bookstore in Union City has grandstand tickets available. We went to church at Bible Fellowship where he and his mother went,” Spence recalled. “And, my cousin’s daughter, Amanda Armstrong, liked Ronnie when they were younger. It’s a small world.” Spence, the chief operations officer at Ansonia Lumber, said he learned that Ronnie was a “mother’s boy,” had never been

She said she never thought about a curfew because he’d never been out with friends. She set it for 10:30. At approximately that time, headlights pulled into her drive, only it wasn’t Ronnie. When the officer asked Meade if he thought he was drunk, he stated ‘I know I’m a little drunk.’ Meade was asked to exit the vehicle, at which time the officer observed he was unsteady on his feet. Meade performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for OVI. He was transported to the Greenville Police Department, where he agreed to a breath test. Meade was placed under an administrative license suspension and issued a citation for driving in marked lanes and OVI.

The officer advised him of his warrant and placed him into handcuffs and into the care of another officer. Linking schools and businesses with Inspire Career Concert PIQUA – Mercer, Auglaize, Shelby and Darke Counties will be hosting the second annual, Inspire Career Concert for high school seniors. The event will be held on Sept. 20 at Edison State Community College in Piqua. The Gold Sponsors for the event include: Advanced Composites, Inc., Classic Carriers, Inc., Crown Equipment Corporation, and Ross Aluminum Castings. The goal is to actively link High School Seniors from a four-county area to local businesses for internships, summer, or full-time employment possibilities in the future. This is an inspirational event focused on helping students find their voice and career
path. This is a great opportunity to bring High School Seniors together with local employers in order to make a meaningful/personal connection before they graduate. The senior event will include a career fair (both in the morning and afternoon), and a band who will also be providing the keynote to keep the students energized. Attaboy is the keynote speaker and band. They combine both impactful speaking with relevant music. The band encourages students to find their path and to get outside of their comfort zone. The students will hear the music they want with the message they need. The students will be encouraged to
live with courage, find their authenticity, and embrace their growth paths. A few quotes from those who attended the inaugural Inspire Career Concert: “Such a great opportunity for the students and for local companies to really get their name out there and show students the opportunities available to them.” “Good interaction! It is still surprising that many seniors had no ideas about what careers they are potentially interested in!” “Well worth our time! Having high school students meet potential employers is very beneficial. It was an awesome event! It was a great experience for
the employers and students alike. It was great having all the local seniors at your fingertips to explain your job and future employment opportunities. The local students were very well receptive, and it was great knowing we have such great future employees in our rural areas.” This event is a great example of collaboration in action. The event is being sponsored by Gold Sponsors: Advanced Composites, Inc., Classic Carriers, Inc., Crown Equipment Corporation, and Ross Aluminum Castings. The other organizations include, Hometown Opportunity, Auglaize Mercer Business Education Alliance (AMBE),

Constitution Week, an annual commemoration of the living document that upholds and protects the freedoms central to our American way of life. This year, the annual celebration begins September 17, 2019. DAR initiated the observance in 1955, when the organization petitioned the U.S. Congress to dedicate Sept. 17–23 of each year to the commemoration of Constitution Week. Congress adopted the resolution, and on Aug. 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into Public Law #915. The celebration’s goals are threefold: to encourage the study of the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787; to inform people that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage and the foundation of our way of life; and to emphasize U.S. citizens’ responsibility to protect, defend and preserve the Constitution. DAR has been the foremost advocate for the awareness, promotion and celebration of Constitution Week. This annual observance provides innumerable opportunities for educational initiatives and community outreach, two mission areas of crucial importance to the National Society’s work. By fostering knowledge of and appreciation for the Constitution and the inalienable

The Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP), a division of ODI, will host Medicare Check-Up Day events throughout the state to help consumers objectively compare and select the best plan that meets their unique needs. Medicare Open Enrollment for the 2020 plan year starts Oct. 15 and ends Dec. 7. “More than two million Ohioans rely on Medicare, and we work to help families make the best decisions to meet their health care needs,” Governor DeWine said. “Families should discuss their Medicare coverage and contact the Department of Insurance for help selecting a plan for next year.” Locally, information sessions and help will be held Oct. 3 and 31 at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville. A presentation will be held Oct. 3 from 10-11 a.m. Call (937) 547-7628 to RSVP. Counseling will be available by appointment on Oct. 31, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To make an appointment,

Greenville crushes Lady Pirates GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave volleyball team under the guidance of second year wife and husband coaching team; head coach Michelle Hardesty and assistant varsity coach Jim Hardesty continues to improve on the court and in the win/loss column. “That was a great win,” said Coach Michelle Hardesty. “I am excited for this Gaylen Blosser | DarkeCountyMedia.com group of girls and to have Josi Worden returns a serve for the Lady Wave in the team’s MVL win most of them for a couple over West Carrollton. years yet – it’s going to be neat. 3-0 MVL win over the visiting West Carrollton Lady Pirates in a Tuesday night home match. “It is nice coming into games like these expecting to win and not just wanting to win like we were last year,” assistant coach Jim Hardesty stated. “We were just wanting to try and find wins, but right now we are expecting to win. That is the big difference right now from last year to this year.” The Lady Wave jumped out to a 13-1 first set lead on their way to a 25-11 win to go up 1-0. “Terminating a point as quick as possible is always a goal, not giving an opponent the opportunity
to play their game,” said Michelle Hardesty. Set No. 2 had the Lady Wave starting a little slower than the opening set with a 9-4 advantage but finished up strong to take the second set by an identical 25-11 score to lead 2-0 going into the third set of the match. In the final set the Lady Wave got a 14-4 double lead and went on to outscored the visitor 11-2 to close out the night with 25-6 lopsided third set victory. “We have 12 girls on varsity and at any given time I can throw somebody in there and they fall right into the mix,” Coach Michelle Hardesty noted.
The Lady Wave earned 58 of their 75 points with 15 ace serves, 33 kills and 10 block kills. Senior libero, Josi Worden had 7 aces and 11 digs. Carleigh Cox had 4 aces on 9 attempts. Abbie Yoder had 12 kills and 8 block kills while Emma Klosterman was good for 8 kills and sophomore Hunter Class 7 kills. Libby McKinney finished the night with 30 assists. “They have done a great job this year,” Jim Hardesty stated. “I can’t say enough about everybody, all 12 girls played – and they play a lot.” The Lady Wave return to action Thursday night at Sidney.

GREENVILLE – The Greenville boys soccer team shutout the visiting Stebbins Indians 3-0 in a Tuesday night MVL soccer match at Harmon field.
“After three kind of sloppy road games – played well but just didn’t get the results,” said Greenville coach Mark Coppess. “Tonight we needed that win.” The team’s played to a 0-0 stalemate through 40-minutes of first half play and continued scoreless through more than 23-minutes of the second half of play. “Second half we were a little more possession oriented,” Coppess noted of halftime conversation with his team. “Finding our wings a little more, spreading their defense out, giving some opportunities and finally getting the balls in the box like we’re supposed to do and finishing.” Ben Davidson got the Wave on the board with 16:30 showing on the second half clock to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Xavier Maitlen used an Andrew Bonfiglio assist to score the second Greenville goal of the night giving

The Lady Jets early game was cancelled due to a shortage of players able to take the field against the Lady Rams. “We are currently sitting at 10 players,” Coach Diceanu said of the current lineup. “We had 12-players and Mia my daughter tore her ACL a week ago. Maddie Stacie had a concussion last game, a pretty good one so she’ll be out for a little while. She was born Easter morning March 31, 1918, in Salamonia, Ind., one of seven children of the late Henry Clay and Clara Mabel (Reynard) Myers. While here, she made a name for herself….as a writer and florist. Niece Connie Imel said, “Aunt Bess was a great aunt and she worked hard all of her life. My mother, Virginia Ruth Liggett, was her sister. There were six girls and one boy in the family. She wrote two books that were published. She also wrote a lot of songs and poetry and stories. She hand-wrote them and a woman named Carol, who nows lives in Florida, typed some of it for her. Bess owned Greenville Flower Shop.” It was reported that her talents in the floral industry led to multiple invitations to the White House to read poetry and to help design the Christmas floral decorations. She always said she would never marry a farmer due to the hard work and long hours, but Delbert changed her mind. She eventually grew quite fond of the term, “farmer’s wife.” Bess worked in the floral design industry honing her skills until she was able to open her own shop in 1969, which she called Greenville Flower Shop. “Bess is my second cousin and I thoroughly enjoyed discussing our ancestors with her,” said Judy Myers Ahrens. “She was born the same year as my dad, so
she had many stories about him. She was a big help to me with the genealogy book I am writing.” “I met Bess when working at the hearing aid office,” commented Sheila Miller. “She was a very special, amazing lady. She always made my day when she came for appointments. She was always so full of smiles. questions. They invite the local community to join them in this study. It is designed to allow people to come and go - but is best understood if followed continuously. Join them and bring a friend. They have books to share and will get more as needed.

YOLO Park a hit for fitness GREENVILLE – YOLO Urban Park in downtown Greenville may have opened just a month ago, but it has already been welcomed with open arms by the community. Every day, children can be seen playing in the park’s water feature, adults can be seen chatting with friends, and – with great consistency – the community can be found participating in fitness classes. To celebrate YOLO Urban Park’s opening weekend, Fit by Loy offered a free cardio drumming class at the park, where over 15 people of all ages worked up a sweat while having fun. The following weekend, BMF and Nature’s Heart Yoga provided “on the go” workouts, and on September 8 and 9, the three fitness studios were at it again. This time, Fit by Loy hosted REFIT, led by instructor Sarah Beard, while BMF and Nature’s Heart Yoga offered a continuation of their previous class. “Leading fitness classes at YOLO Park has been fantas-

We couldn’t have asked for better weather, and the turnout has been wonderful.” All three studios hope to continue to offer classes at YOLO Park until the weather dictates otherwise. “We care about ensuring people have fun while working out,” said Loy, “and we are grateful YOLO Park offers us the opportunity to increase the excitement by exercising outdoors.”

“This trip was full of experiences that I won’t forget. We met some amazing people. We had the opportunity to network with people and learn new ways of doing our jobs to the best of our abilities.” Julie Case: “It was amaz-
ing that all the EMS providers were all in one area to take care of people and their difficult time. Even though we do this every day, I have never seen it on a larger scale with all the ambulances. Another experience is that we were a straight team of five ambulances two of them were Spirit’s and three others were AMR. The strike team was like a family.” Jacob Cain: “We were exposed to various mindsets and ways of doing things. We interacted with many different people from many different areas of the country and all of them had unique ways of doing things. I learned a lot about EMS management and incident management from watching the command structure
and watching my immediate leadership. It was tough living out of an ambulance for almost a week but the experiences gained were rewarding.” Tracie Brown: “Although we did not have to be deployed to actually help others, it was interesting to see some of the things that would happen in this situation, and to see all of the people that are willing to help out however they can. It was amazing to see the response of the different squads. I got into the EMS field because of 9/11, and I didn’t like the feeling of not being able to help. I never want to have that feeling ever again. I will always be willing to help wherever I can.”

ANSONIA — Steve Thornton retired from his full-time job at Whirlpool on Aug. 6, 2017, allowing him to do more with his small engine business at home. Thornton’s Small Engines at 203 N. Third St., Ansonia, has been in business for 20 years at that location. “Before that, my shop was on Routzong Road, south of Greenville,” he said. “I have been doing this part-time probably close to 30 years while I worked at Whirlpool for 42 years.” The 1974 Mississinawa Valley School graduate said work is pretty steady year-round. He still has work in the wintertime as many of his customers use that time to get their lawn equipment ready for spring. That’s what he specializes in….lawn and garden equipment, including tillers, and two-cycle engines. “Anything with small engines,” he said. “I feature the Shindaiwa line for such things as trimmers and chain saws, and the Columbia line in mowers.” He has some mowers in his shop and will get more in the spring. “If I don’t have in stock what a customer wants, I can get it pretty quickly out of the company in Columbus,” Thornton said. His shop features not only the mowers, but other products such as Deka batteries, a limited sup-

He said his interest in engines started when his father (the late Ed Starnes) would help out neighbors on their vehicles. “I was in autos for a while,” Thornton said. “I fixed up cars and raced them.” How is business going? “It is more complicated than it used to be,” he said. “You have to stay up on the changes they make. I’ve gone to a couple of schools in Wisconsin and did some local update technical schooling on some of the equipment I sell.” His wife, Ghlee, assists him now though that she too is retired from Whirlpool. Sisters agencies. Studies prove that children who spend time with a positive role model are more likely to become healthy, productive adults. Big Brothers Big Sisters has a vision for all youth to achieve their full potential. Their mission is to create and support oneto-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. By partnering with parents, guardians, volunteers, and others in the community; BBBS is held accountable for each child in their program achieving higher aspirations, greater confidence, better relation-

In addition to Clark, whose work displays a simple modern yet rustic aesthetic, the Collective includes Salt Lake City native Dionne Mayhew, who at one time served as manager of the Mill store and credits Ms. Clark with teaching her about clay, firing, design, and form, Rita Wiley, who has collaborated with Ms. Clark for decades and says that she enjoys her pursuit of the endless possibilities of ceramics, as well as Loretta Wray, who also once managed the Mill store, and who derives the forms, shapes, and colors in her pottery from nature and is inspired by the wonder of creation. Their new work is always eagerly anticipated by the many fans of their creative output, who happily seek to add to their treasured collections. in the Clark Gallery at historic Bear’s Mill opens on the final Friday of September with a reception from 6-8 p.m. offering finger food and drinks as well as brief talks by the artists who will share information about their work, methods, and inspiration at 7 p.m. “Art at the Mill,” curated by Jan Roestamadji and Julie Clark is free and open to the public. According to Ms. Clark, herself one of the exhibiting artists, “BOWLS!”will include functional and decorative bowls of all sizes and shapes. “We are using many different techniques to make serving bowls, cereal bowls, mixing bowls, bowls meant for floral arranging, and much, much more,” the potter and former-coowner of Bear’s Mill stated.
