Courthouse to receive 55 new cameras DARKE COUNTY – As part of the courthouse security update project, 48 cameras will be installed inside the facility, with seven planned for the exterior. The total cost of the project is $124,286.56. On Wednesday, county commissioners approved a quote of $122,412.51 for the purchase and installation of the Axis multi-megapixel cameras, which will be purchased from Northwest Ohio Security Systems of Lima. Commission approved another $1,874.05 to Secure Tech Systems Inc. of Irving, Texas for a Wave Plus Output Relay Expansion Board, including onsite set-up and training. Chief Deputy Mark Whitaker was on hand Wednesday to present information concerning the purchase and installation of the cameras. “We’re seeking to eliminate blind spots,” Whittaker said concerning the number of new cameras being installed. “We’ll be upgrading all areas,” of public access inside the courthouse. Several areas in the courthouse currently are protected via cameras, while others are not, Whittaker said. The cameras will have different functions, depending on their location. The new cameras are tied in with the construction of the new rear entrance to the courthouse, which is being completed by Arcon Builders with Mote & Associates as the project’s architects. Commissioner Mike Rhoades questioned Whittaker on when the cameras would be installed. “Fairly soon,” Whittaker said, adding that the next step will be a meeting between Arcon Builders, Mote & Associates and Northwest Ohio Security Systems. The security system, Whittaker said, also will include the installation of panic buttons, which will alert the county dispatch there is a problem at the courthouse. Future plans, he said, call for a similar update at the county jail, which still uses an analog system. Also this week, commissioners signed a notification stating State Route 118 will be the “anticipated travel route” for access to and from the proposed Golden Heritage Egg Farm in Allen Township. Tom Menke of Menke Consulting told commissioners designating State Route 118 as the main access to the property is “a good win for everybody. There will be no impact on neighbors.” According to the Ohio Revised Code, persons proposing a new or expanded major concentrated animal feeding facility to notify county commission and township officials of potential impacts to road infrastructure. City moves forward with splash pad GREENVILLE – The City of Greenville is moving closer to building a splash pad at South Park. Earlier this summer, city council learned the city received a grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Land & Conservation Fund for approximately $273,000 with a match provided by the Wayne Hospital Foundation for $225,000. Safety Service Director Curt Garrison shared the city could save at least two percent on the price of the splash pad if it is ordered by Nov. 1. According to Garrison, the city received several estimates with Vortex, who recently completed a splash pad in Springboro, offering an interactive splash pad for $253,584. That estimate came in $20,000 under the proposal from Game Time and $45,000 under Ventura’s proposal. Garrison said he is “happy” with his contact and the work Vortex put into their estimate. The splash pad is expected to encompass a 90-foot diameter area and have three different sections appropriate for different age levels. “And they’re not intermingled,” said Garrison.

Greenville residents can expect to see some changes to South Park beginning next spring.

Garrison pointed out the splash pad will use a potable water system. “If we had a recirculating system we would have to staff it with lifeguards; we would have to monitor the chemicals. With the potable system there are no chemicals to monitor.” He also explained the splash pad would operate off of two actuators. Each actuator controls a portion of the splash pad. The system will run for 15 minutes before the actuator will need to be pushed to restart the system. The city can become a member of the National Purchasing Partner Co-Op and can make the purchase without going through the competitive bidding process. If purchased through the co-op, the city would receive a five percent

discount in addition to the two percent discount if purchased prior to Nov. 1. In addition to the splash pad, the city will also make improvements to the restroom facilities and revamp the parking lot. Council encouraged Garrison to move forward with preparing the necessary legislation. Garrison also shared the Planning & Zoning Commission is currently working to regulate donation bins in the retail area. There are several bins operated by a company that collects clothing that ultimately gives a donation to a charity. Most times, the donation does not go to a local charity. The issue with the bins is that they become a dumping ground for furniture and trash and the company doesn’t ser-

vice the bin on a weekly basis. “The police department is trying to handle the issues as they arise, but as the person who made the complaint said, ‘this isn’t what we need our police department doing.’” Although Garrison is not sure how the regulations will take shape, some of his suggestions included requiring a permit, instituting a fee for placement or completely eliminating the issue. He thinks it can be managed better by the property owner or the company placing the bins. Planning & Zoning hopes to have a recommendation to council in the near future. Wolf Man at library GREENVILLE – The Greenville Public Library’s Third Floor Film Series will screen the 1941 horror film The Wolf Man in October. The film was directed by George Waggner and starred Lon Cheney Jr. and Claude Rains. The Wolf Man has inspired countless imitators in the nearly 80 years since its release, but few of these films have managed to capture its atmosphere, existential dread, and—perhaps most surprisingly of all— its humanity. While many might dismiss this film as a hokey monster flick, it’s the title character’s guilt and desperate hold on what makes him human that has allowed The Wolf Man to continue to resonate with audiences today. Its sequels were of questionable quality, but this first of Lon Cheney Jr.’s turns as the titular werewolf is a true classic. Claude Rains lends his signature warmth to a strong supporting cast that also includes Ralph Bellamy, Evelyn Ankers, Maria Ouspenskaya, and Bela Lugosi. Join the library on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided and a short discussion will follow the film. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

think I would actually hit it. My throwing accuracy was not great. I thought it would fly away, but it didn’t. I felt horrible. I don’t know how many baby birds I tried to raise that fell out of their nest. None survived. I tried to save baby bunnies caught by our dogs. That didn’t work either. I brought the meanest dog ever home from Turkey and a couple of cats from Texas. I’ve lost count of how many dogs I’ve had over the course of my 53+ years. That’s why I was not surprised and eager to help out when she got a hamster this summer. Your hamster may be cute, but this one is absolutely adorable. Her name is Flapjack. Don’t ask because I don’t know how she came up with name. She had her with her all summer, but when it came time to move into her dorm room she was informed by her residential advisor that hamsters were not allowed

in the dorm room. Only animals in a tank are allowed. My daughter tried to argue that she keeps her in a tank. Guess where Flapjack now calls home. This hamster came to us extremely spoiled. She started with a 1’x1’ cage, which lasted about a day. Her home was upgraded to a 1 1/2’x2’ aquarium and about the time she came to live with our daughter saw a 90-gallon fish tank with a “free” sign on it. Flapjack now resides in a 4’x2’ aquarium with plenty of running room. I also saw the Snap Chats of this hamster eating the leftover rice out of my daughter’s dinner bowl, as well as all the peanuts and fruit she could ever want. Now that she has come to live with us, nothing has changed. Flapjack is still spoiled, except she doesn’t get to eat out of my dinner bowl. The dogs called dibs on that.

Williams Foundation donates Buckingham ‘Coach Strong’ By Clinton Randall DarkeCountyMedia.com

UNION CITY, Ind. – For the sixth straight year, the Dylan Williams Forever An All-Star Foundation donated three more Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to the summer memorial baseball tournament winners on Wednesday evening. This year’s recipients were Celina (12U), Greenville (10U) and Yorktown (8U). Since each team has won their respected all-star age bracket in the tournament before, they will select a location of their choice for this new AED to be placed. Since the sudden and tragic death of their young son Dylan during all-star baseball practice in 2013, the Williams family has made it their mission to equipment these life-saving devices in as many area parks and facilities as possible. Todate, the foundation has donated 95 AED devices and plan on another one for the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department very soon. Unlike a heart attack, the AED G5 from Cardiac Science targets the heart during cardiac arrest. After the electrode pads are placed on

an unresponsive patient, the device monitors and delivers a shock in order to stop and restart the heart to regain a normal rhythm. Studies show that the chance of surviving a cardiac event like this decreases by 10 percent every minute…so having an AED available at the time of an emergency is crucial in saving a life. “Every second counts,” said Dylan’s father Erick Williams. “We will continue to donate as many AEDs for as long as we can!” As part of Wednesday’s presentation, Troy Pflugner

from the device manufacturer Cardiac Science, gave a demonstrated on how the device works and when to use it. He noted how the AED technology makes it nearly foolproof for anyone trying to help revive a patient. “It is simple to use and proven to save lives,” Pflugner said. “Just remember, nonresponsive and not breathing means AED time.” For more information or learn how you can help visit the Dylan Williams Forever An All-Star Foundation on Facebook.

ANSONIA – The Ansonia Lady Tigers volleyball team is supporting the team’s head coach, Darcy Buckingham, with special socks the team wears at Tigers’ volleyball matches. Coach Buckingham has been battling health issues but has not allowed the obstacle stand in the way of her coaching duties during the 2019 fall volleyball season. “I told the team a while ago I have some health issues I am fighting through,” said Buckingham. “They chose to say that if ‘coach can fight through’ what she is fighting through then we are

going to fight for her.” The team motto for 2019 is: Coach Strong, thus ‘Coach’ woven into the back side of the left sock and ‘Strong’ adorning the back of their right sock.

“Their motto now is ‘Coach Strong’ and they are going to fight through any adversity just to prove that they are just as strong as me to fight through everything,” Coach Buckingham stated.

TROY – The Greenville Lady Wave tennis team battled injuries and the flu to defeat the Troy Lady Trojans 3-2 in Monday night MVL tennis action. “The kids played hard – they didn’t give up,” said Greenville coach Jim Koontz. “We had to put them in different positions – they had to move up a notch from what they usually play. They stepped up and we beat them.” “Our second singles

player, Natalie Milligan was hurt and Faith Mansfield plays first doubles went home sick from school with the flu,” Koontz continued. “We had to move a couple of the other kids up in there and we ended up beating Troy 3-2.” The Lady Wave swept the Troy in the singles matches of the night to secure the MVL win for Greenville. Emily Marchal defeated Troy’s Kit Wolke 6-2, 6-0 in first singles. The Lady Wave’s Abby Swensen beat Mackenzie Nosker 4-6, 6-4 and 6-3 at second singles

GREENVILLE – The Greenville Lady Wave continues to struggle on the field but not in their hearts, desire and attitude on and off the soccer field. “It’s hurting them as much as it is hurting us coaches,” said Greenville coach Samantha Grim said of the team’s lack of wins on the field. “They leave their hearts out on the field – it’s hard.” The Tippecanoe Lady Red Devils earned a 10-0 win over the Lady Wave at Greenville’s Harmon Field in a Wednesday night MVL match. “I just wish they could just get that win,” Grim said. “It will come – it will.” “I could never give up on them,” continued Coach Grim. “They are a great group of girls. it shows out there – I love it. They definitely fight for their teammates.” With the win, the Lady Red Devils continue to be the only undefeated team in Miami Valley League play with a perfect 5-0 conference record. League wins are a result of a 9-0 win over West Carrollton, a 9-1 victory over Piqua and a 5-0 win over Xenia and a 1-0 win over Stebbins.

The Lady Wave will be in action Wednesday, September 25th when the Xenia Lady Buccaneers come to town for a 5:30 p.m. match and Saturday, September 28th at home against the Eaton Lady Eagles with a 10 a.m. start time. “I learn something new from these girls every time we come out here,” Grim noted. “They are a lot of fun.”

SIDNEY – The Greenville Lady Wave defeated the Sidney Lady Yellow Jackets 3-1 on the road in a MVL volleyball matchup. The Lady Wave started the night slow with Sidney taking the opening set by a 25-20 score. “We struggled early in the match,” said Greenville coach Michelle Hardesty. “The Yellow Jackets took advantage winning Set No. 1. Greenville battled back to win three unanswered sets and improve to 9-4 on the season while Sidney drops to 7-6 for the year. “There are two things we can control, effort and attitude, and they did,” noted Hardesty. “Not to be undone by the set loss the Greenville girls came out strong taking an 11-3 lead in set 2 and never looking back.” Team stats included 13 ace serves, 44 kills, 11 blocks and 66 digs for the night. Libby McKinney tallied 44-assists and 7-aces. Emma Klosterman accounted for 16-kills. Abbie Yoder had 13-kills and 8 blocks. Josi Worden finished the night with 17-digs for the Lady Wave. The Lady Wave JV also brings home a win. Splitting the first two sets of the match one each 16-25, 25-15. The Wave took the third set 25-22 after a huge come from behind 11-20 deficit. Kaitlyn Gonzalez took over the serving duties and with the help of her teammates Greenville took a 23-20 lead then finished with the win. Coach Michelle Hardesty took time to talk about the Lady Wave Volleyball program following the match. “We are so proud of the contribution of all

the Lady Wave players this week. Three match weeks are tough,” said Hardesty. “They played through it all like champions, winning all three matches, which has me thinking about our record, which is 9-4.” “Last season was fun the Green Wave went on a 9 match win streak in the middle of their season, something that hadn’t been done at Greenville in a long time if ever to finish the year at 11-12 after previous records of 6-17, 1-23, 0-23.” “This year is a whole new story. I think it’s been quite a while since Greenville Volleyball had this outstanding of a record midway through the season. When Jim & I took over the program we stated we wanted to build a program that the team,

the parents, the school and community could be proud of. All thanks goes to the players and our assistant coaches Amy Schoen and Melissa Good, they want that too and all are working extremely hard.” “We are getting it done a lot more quickly than either of us thought we would. We added a 5/6th grade team, under the direction of Coach Schoen this fall. They practice on Saturday mornings and play on late afternoon on Sunday’s just during the month of September. I think we’d have a lot more interest if the timing of putting this together wasn’t so hasty and late, many girls are currently playing fall softball.” “Those girls went 1-1 last week,” continued Coach Hardesty. “We also have 4-team managers this year. Just being around the game gives them an opportunity to learn. We coaches and players appreciate our managers a ton. We hope to have more girls prepared to play going in to Middle School. We will continue with summer camps and hopefully build more interest.” Next up for Greenville is the Troy Trojans at home on Monday.

Combs officially opens State Farm office GREENVILLE — A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held late Thursday evening for the Marshall Combs State Farm insurance office at 200 Wagner Ave. “I opened on June 1, after Diane Evans retired,” Combs said. “This is my first ownership.” The 26-year-old bachelor served in law enforcement and in the U.S. Marines for five years. “I worked for the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, more in the corrections division,” said Combs, who grew up in Brookville. “I also worked for State Farm in Vandalia.” His supervisor in Vandalia, David Venney, was also in

That’s undoubtedly a chore, as he is one of nine children. He’s third oldest, and the remainder are Jordan, Elissa, Emily, Mary, Anna, Kelly, Kaitlin and Travis. Working in the office with him are April Billenstein as office manager and team members Chelsea Thwaits and Paige Sloan. He has gotten all new, updated equipment for his office. NEW MADISON — The 86th annual Tri-Village Community and School Fair is right around the corner, and there will be a host of activities that is sure to please everyone. “We encourage everyone to enjoy a good old fashion family day,” said New Madison Mayor Monyca Schlechty with this year’s theme Raising Proud Patriots to be True Americans. The Tri-Village High School will host a crowning ceremony on Friday, Oct. 4 during the home football game. The fair gets underway on Saturday, Oct. 5. with a pancake and sausage breakfast from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church. Crafts vendors will be on hand at the school along with a food truck rally in the school parking lot. Dan Arnold will return with his Ninja Warrior obstacle course in the school gym and will be open to children and adults at no cost. The ever-popular mini tractor pull will also return. Founded by Wilbur B. Wood, an agriculture teacher and first held October 1927, the event is patterned similar to county fairs. There will be a baking contest, pumpkin decorating contest, and a canned good contest. New to the fair this year will be a scavenger hunt. Traditional games will be offered in front of the school, including a water balloon toss. The Tri-Village FFA alumni will host bingo. It is her hope, said Schlechty, to keep the tradition going strong as the event hits close to home. Her grandparents were involved back in the 1960s,

and she recalled helping her mother on the committee. She gave a special thank you to Chantelle Sebring for “keeping the tradition alive.” The tradition continues with a community parade at 11 a.m. with lifelong New Madison residents Paula and Charlie Godsey serving as grand marshals. The couple is humbled, honored, and excited to be serving as this year’s parade marshals. (See below for more information on the grand marshals). The fair will conclude with a junior high dance. For anyone wanting to participate in the baking contest, contact Natasha Hemmelgarn at 417-6511. Individuals participating in the pumpkin decorating contest and canned good contest may sign up at 8:30 a.m., at the school, the morning of the event. 2019 Tri-Village Community and School Fair Grand Marshals Charlie and Paula Godsey The Tri-Village Community and School Fair Committee is pleased to

Prairie Days at Shawnee Prairie GREENVILLE – Step through a wrinkle in time to experience life on the Ohio frontier. On the weekend of Sept. 28 and 29 the Darke County Park District will host its annual Prairie Days festival at Shawnee Prairie Preserve at 4267 St. Rt. 502 West near Greenville. As festival attendants wander through the grounds, they’ll hear the ring of the blacksmith’s hammer on the anvil, smell fresh bread baking in the outdoor oven, and see long hunters tending their fires in the woodland encampment. Come watch apple butter cooking over the fire, play children’s pioneer games, view local artists’ works, enjoy live music and entertainment. This year there will be performances by The Darke County Civic Theatre on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. and Sunday at 3:30 p.m. The SilverGrass

Band will perform on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and at 3:45 p.m. the Ramblin’ Rovers will take the stage. On Sunday at 1:30 p.m., kick back and enjoy the music of Noah Back. On Sunday, Johnny Appleseed will also be wandering the festival sharing stories to anyone that will listen. Between acts, sit-a-spell with the pioneer volunteers in the Log House or try your hand at candlemaking, tin-smithing, and more! Take a stroll through the 18th century encampment and watch a tomahawk and knife throwing competition. Do you bake the best pie in Darke County? Bring them your homemade Apple, Berry, Peach, or Other Favorite Pie on Saturday, Sept. 28 for our annual Prairie Days Pie Baking Contest. Entries will be accepted 9:30–10 a.m. Saturday morning at the classroom of the

Nature Center at Shawnee Prairie Preserve. Judging starts promptly at 10 a.m. The winner of each category will receive a first-place certificate. Overall Bestin-Show will be awarded a cash prize. Winners will be announced during Prairie Days Saturday at 1:50 p.m. at the outdoor stage. Just $2/pie entry fee to enter in any (or all) of the following categories: Apple, Peach, Berry, or Other Favorite Pie. Be sure to submit pies in a disposable pan and they cannot accept meringue or refrigerated pies. After judging, slices of pie will be sold at Mad Anthony’s Tavern. There will also be a wide variety of food to choose from. Take a load off as you enjoy fresh produce from Downing Fruit Farm, an ice cream cone from Just Ice Cream, or visit one of the non-profit vendors serving a wide variety of foods for lunch, snacks,

The Wing Walkers will play at 6 p.m. In addition to the Wing Walkers, RSO is providing free musical activities for kids of all ages. Greenville Early Bird

Preventing Type 2 Diabetes Milkweed pod collection GREENVILLE – Community members are preventing type 2 diabetes together with the PreventT2 lifestyle change program offered by Family Health beginning Tuesday October 15th. Guided by a trained lifestyle coach, groups of participants are learning the skills they need to make lasting changes such as losing a modest amount of weight, being more physically active, and managing stress. People with prediabetes — higher-than-normal blood glucose (sugar) levels — are 5 to 15 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those with normal blood glucose levels. In fact, many people with prediabetes can be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within five years. “One in three American adults has prediabetes, so the need for prevention has never been greater,” said Rachel Barhorst, Clinical Pharmacist and trained PreventT2 lifestyle coach. “The PreventT2 program offers a proven approach to preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes through modest lifestyle changes made with the support of a coach and one’s peers.” Participants learn how to eat healthy, add physical activity to their routine, manage stress, stay motivated, and solve problems that can get in the way of healthy changes. PreventT2 groups meet for a year — weekly for the first six months, then once or twice a month for the second

six months to maintain healthy lifestyle changes. The program’s group setting provides a supportive environment with people who are facing similar challenges and trying to make the same changes. Together participants celebrate their successes and find ways to overcome obstacles. PreventT2 is part of the National Diabetes Prevention Program, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The local program meets at Greenville’s Family Health on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. Family Health is working to enroll participants and assist them in decreasing their risk for type 2 diabetes. This program may be covered by your insurance or provided at a low cost. PreventT2 is based on research that showed that people with prediabetes who lost 5 to 7 percent of their body weight (10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person) by making modest changes reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. Nationwide implementation of the program could greatly reduce future cases of type 2 diabetes, a serious condition that can lead to health problems including heart attack; stroke; blindness; kidney failure; or loss of toes, feet, or legs. “Small changes can add up to a big difference,” added Lacie Grosch, Registered Dietitian and trained PreventT2 lifestyle coach “Working with a trained lifestyle coach who provides guidance, PreventT2

participants are making lasting changes together.” People are more likely to have prediabetes and type 2 diabetes if they: * Are 45 years of age or older * Are overweight * Have a family history of type 2 diabetes * Are physically active fewer than three times per week * Have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy or gave birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds. To participate in the PreventT2 program, speak with your Family Health provider and take their risk assessment on their website at www.familyhealthservices.org. To learn more about the program, call Lacie Grosch, (937)547-2319 or visit familyhealthservices.org and/or www.cdc.gov/ PreventT2.

Greenville Trick or Treat

GREENVILLE – Most of have seen or read that pollinator populations across the country are in decline, including the Monarch Butterfly. A reduction in the number of milkweed plants in Ohio and surrounding states and a loss of wintering habitat due to logging, weather and human encroachment have contributed to the population decline of the Monarch Butterfly. There are ways to help. The typical start date is Sept. 1 through Oct. 31, but with the recent rains the milkweed

pods seem to be staying green longer this year; so mid to late October maybe a better collecting time. The Darke Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) will be collecting seed pods from the common milkweed plant. The Monarch relies on the milkweed plant as a host plant, to lay eggs and as a food source. Whether as an individual, or a group, you can make a difference in the Monarch Butterfly population by collecting these seed pods once they have matured and have turned a greenish-

yellow or yellowish-brown and ready to burst open. Once collected, the seed pods will be sent away to be dried and cleaned. A portion of the seed will be sent back to Darke County to be incorporated with other seed mixes that will be planted for pollinator species. To help, call the Darke SWCD office at (937) 5481752, visit www.darkeswcd. com, or follow them on Facebook or Twitter to find out where the seed pods can be dropped off.
